Abstract Aims To outline the extent to which practice owners in Dutch oral healthcare practices (OHPs) use a directive and supportive leadership styles, to map out which goals practice owners in Dutch OHPs consider most important when choosing collaboration within the practice and to identify the reasons why oral healthcare professionals choose to engage in collaborative practice. Materials and methods A survey involving 802 general dental practitioners, dental hygienists, and prevention assistants was conducted. The questionnaire covered, among other subjects, leadership styles and reasons for collaboration. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, one-way ANOVA, linear regression, and logistic regression. Results Compared to employees, practice owners ascribe to themselves more characteristics of both directive and supportive leadership. The most frequently mentioned reasons for choosing a practice form that involves collaboration were the possibilities to provide the best care and the desire to focus on prevention. Healthcare providers chose to work in a collaborative practice for several reasons, which were associated with profession, age and gender. Conclusions The degree of directive and supportive leadership among practice owners in dental care practices in the Netherlands showed a strong correlation. The most frequently mentioned reasons for choosing collaboration were related to healthcare content.

Abstract Mitochondria are double-membrane-bounded organelles that depend critically on phospholipids supplied by the endoplasmic reticulum. These lipids must cross the outer membrane to support mitochondrial function, but how they do this is unclear. We identify the Voltage Dependent Anion Channel (VDAC), an abundant outer membrane protein, as a scramblase-type lipid transporter that catalyzes lipid entry. On reconstitution into membrane vesicles, dimers of human VDAC1 and VDAC2 catalyze rapid transbilayer translocation of phospholipids by a mechanism that is unrelated to their channel activity. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations of VDAC1 reveal that lipid scrambling occurs at a specific dimer interface where polar residues induce large water defects and bilayer thinning. The rate of phospholipid import into yeast mitochondria is an order of magnitude lower in the absence of VDAC homologs, indicating that VDACs provide the main pathway for lipid entry. Thus, VDAC isoforms, members of a superfamily of beta barrel proteins, moonlight as a class of phospholipid scramblases - distinct from alpha-helical scramblase proteins - that act to import lipids into mitochondria.

BackgroundRepeated exposure to sensitizing events can activate HLA-specific memory B cells, leading to the production of donor-specific memory B cell antibodies (DSAm) that pose a risk for antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR) in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). This single-center retrospective study aimed to identify DSAm and assess their association with outcomes in a cohort of KTRs with pretransplant serum donor-specific antibodies (DSA).MethodsWe polyclonally activated pretransplant peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 60 KTRs in vitro, isolated and quantified IgG from the culture supernatant using ELISA, and analyzed the HLA antibodies of eluates with single antigen bead (SAB) assays, comparing them to the donor HLA typing for potential DSAm. Biopsies from 41 KTRs were evaluated for rejection based on BANFF 2019 criteria.ResultsAt transplantation, a total of 37 DSAm were detected in 26 of 60 patients (43%), of which 13 (35%) were found to be undetectable in serum. No significant association was found between pretransplant DSAm and ABMR (P=0.53). Similar results were observed in a Kaplan–Meier analysis for ABMR within the first year posttransplant (P=0.29). Additionally, MFI levels of DSAm showed no significant association with ABMR (P=0.28).ConclusionThis study suggests no significant association between DSAm and biopsy-proven clinical ABMR. Further prospective research is needed to determine whether assessing DSAm could enhance existing immunological risk assessment methods for monitoring KTRs, particularly in non-sensitized KTRs.

Question: What is the diagnostic accuracy of the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT) framework to assess the risk of vascular complications in patients seeking physiotherapy care for neck pain and/or headache? Design: Cross-sectional diagnostic accuracy study. Participants: One hundred and fifty patients seeking physiotherapy for neck pain and/or headache in primary care. Methods: Nineteen physiotherapists performed the index test according to the IFOMPT framework. Patients were classified as having a high, intermediate or low risk of vascular complications, following manual therapy and/or exercise, derived from the estimated risk of the presence of vascular pathology. The reference test was a consensus medical decision reached by a vascular neurologist and an interventional neurologist, with input from a neuroradiologist. The neurologists had access to clinical data and magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine, including an angiogram of the cervical arteries. Outcome measures: Diagnostic accuracy measures were calculated for ‘no contraindication’ (ie, the low-risk category) and ‘contraindication’ (ie, the high-risk and intermediate-risk categories) for manual therapy and/or exercise. Sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, likelihood ratios and the area under the curve were calculated. Results: Manual therapy and/or exercise were contraindicated in 54.7% of the patients. The sensitivity of the IFOMPT framework was low (0.50, 95% CI 0.39 to 0.61) and its specificity was moderate (0.63, 95% CI 0.51 to 0.75). The positive and negative likelihood ratios were weak at 1.36 (95% CI 0.93 to 1.99) and 0.79 (95% CI 0.60 to 1.05), respectively. The area under the curve was poor (0.57, 95% CI 0.49 to 0.65). Conclusion: The IFOMPT framework has poor diagnostic accuracy when compared with a reference standard consisting of a consensus medical decision.

Among the different techniques for monitoring the flow rate of various fluids, thermal flow sensors stand out for their straightforward measurement technique. However, the main drawback of these types of sensors is their dependency on the thermal properties of the medium, i.e., thermal conductivity (k), and volumetric heat capacity (ρcp). They require calibration whenever the fluid in the system changes. In this paper, we present a single hot wire suspended above a V-groove cavity that is used to measure k and ρcp through DC and AC excitation for both pure gases and binary gas mixtures, respectively. The unique characteristic of the proposed sensor is its independence of the flow velocity, which makes it possible to detect the medium properties while the fluid flows over the sensor chip. The measured error due to fluctuations in flow velocity is less than ±0.5% for all test gases except for He, where it is ±6% due to the limitations of the measurement setup. The working principle and measurement results are discussed.

Abstract A spectrum of control methods in human–robot interaction was investigated, ranging from direct control to telepresence with a virtual representation of the robot arm. A total of 24 participants used a setup that included a Franka Emika Panda robot arm, Varjo XR‐3 head‐mounted display, and Leap Motion Controller. Participants performed a box‐and‐block task using the bare hand (A), and under five gesture‐controlled robotic operation methods: direct sight (B), sight via video‐feedthrough (C), in a 3D telepresence environment with (D) and without (E) virtual representation of the robot arm, and using a 2D video feed (F). The number of grabbing attempts did not differ significantly between conditions, but local operation (B & C) yielded more transferred blocks than teleoperation (D–F). Teleoperation using a 3D presentation was advantageous compared to teleoperation using a 2D video feed, as demonstrated by lower peak forces and smaller range in gripper heights in conditions D and E compared to condition F, a finding supported by analyses of the head movement activity. Finally, the bare hand yielded the best performance and subjective ratings. In summary, teleoperation using a 3D presentation provided a smoother interaction than teleoperation with a 2D video feed. However, direct human interaction remains a benchmark yet to surpass.

Abstract Background Patients’ self-management of the implications of their disease(s) is becoming increasingly important. Research shows that hospitalization disrupts established self-management routines. Nurses can play an important role in supporting patients’ self-management. The aim of this study is to describe how nurses support the self-management of hospitalized patients through verbal communication during routine nursing care. Methods A qualitative descriptive study, using overt, non-participant observations was conducted on three wards of a general teaching hospital in the Netherlands. A total of 215 hours of nursing work during 49 shifts was observed. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis based on the six phases of Braun and Clarke. Results Our observations showed that nurses discuss patients’ self-management mainly in short conversations during the care provision. Nurses ask patients about their self-management at home and stimulate patients to express their opinions and to be involved in the care process. Three themes reflect how nurses support self-management: ‘Discussing patient’s self-management’, ‘Enhancing patient’s involvement in care’ and ‘Focusing on patient’s perspective’. Conclusion Hospital nurses have methods to support hospitalized patients’ self-management but it does not seem to be an integral part of daily practice. Given current developments in healthcare, it is reasonable to argue that self-management should be given greater emphasis within the hospital setting, requiring a collaborative approach with patients and other healthcare professionals across the care continuum.

This paper presents the first nickel-plated micro-Coriolis mass-flow sensor with integrated optical readout. The sensor consists of a freely suspended tube made of electroplated nickel with a total length of 60 mm, an inner diameter of 580 µm, and a wall thickness of approximately 8 µm. The U-shaped tube is actuated by Lorentz forces. An optical readout consisting of two LEDs and two phototransistors is used to detect the tube motion. Mass-flow measurements were performed at room temperature with water and isopropyl alcohol for flows up to 200 g/h and 100 g/h, respectively. The measured resonance frequencies were 1.67 kHz and 738 Hz for water and 1.70 kHz and 752 Hz for isopropyl alcohol for the twist and swing modes, respectively. The measured phase shift between the two readout signals shows a linear response to mass flow with very similar sensitivities for water and isopropyl alcohol of 0.41mdegg/h and 0.43 mdegg/h, respectively.

ChatGPT is widely used among students, a situation that challenges educators. The current paper presents two strategies that do not push educators into a defensive role but can empower them. Firstly, we show, based on statistical analysis, that ChatGPT use can be recognized from certain keywords such as ‘delves’ and ‘crucial’. This insight allows educators to detect ChatGPT-assisted work more effectively. Secondly, we illustrate that ChatGPT can be used to assess texts written by students. The latter topic was presented in two interactive workshops provided to educators and educational specialists. The results of the workshops, where prompts were tested live, indicated that ChatGPT, provided a targeted prompt is used, is good at recognizing errors in texts but not consistent in grading. Ethical and copyright concerns were raised as well in the workshops. In conclusion, the methods presented in this paper may help fortify the teaching methods of educators. The computer scripts that we used for live prompting are available and enable educators to give similar workshops.
