A research probing for the unrecorded and taxonomically undescribed indigenous species has been initiated since 2006. Samples were collected from an intertidal zone along the coasts of Korea as well as around the Jeju Island. We have found five unrecorded species of four genera belonging to the order Dinophysiales, Gymnodiniales, Peridiniales, and Prorocentrales. The species are as follows, Sinophysis canaliculata (2017) Bispinodinium angelaceum (2015), Cabra armorica (2016), Prorocentrum bimaculatum (2017), and P. tsawwassenense (2017) (note; The numbers in parenthesis refer to the year in which the species was reported as unrecorded indigenous species by National Institute of Biological Resources, NIBR hereafter).

Among them, seven species were described as newly recorded species in Korean waters, and three have been re-described in this study.

The over-growth of phytoplankton causes harmful algal blooms (HABs) in marine ecological environments. Mobility measurement is important in understanding the action of HABs. In this study, the mobility of Amphidinium carterae Hulburt (A. carterae) was investigated using high-frequency ultrasound in the laboratory. Mobility in response to light was illustrated with M-mode images reconstructed from echoed signals. This study suggests that mobility of the swimming speed of A. carterae in response to light can be measured and calculated with M-mode images through high-frequency ultrasound. This finding may be helpful in understanding the fundamental behavior of HABs.

The East China Sea (ECS) has long been considered an important monitoring site for oceanic ecosystem changes because many water currents and river discharges constantly influence this area. In this study, the community structure and diversity of phytoplankton in the northern part of the ECS adjacent to Jeju Island were explored using small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU) pyrosequencing. We analysed samples collected from four stations from the surface and at 30-m and 50-m depths during April and September 2011. We observed spatial and temporal variations in the phytoplankton community. Among phytoplankton, diatoms and dinoflagellates constituted a major portion at all stations (60–90%). However, comparison of the April and September samples showed seasonal variation and shifts in the dispersion of diatom and dinoflagellates among stations. Among stations, diatoms dominated St. 1 and others were dominated by dinoflagellates. Furthermore, phylotypes of potentially toxin-producing genera such as Karlodinium, Heterocapsa, Gymnodinium, Gyrodinium, and Pseudo-nitzschia were dominant in this area.

A total of 19 species of three genera Dinophysis , Histioneis , and Parahistioneis of the family Dinophysaceae are reported here from samples obtained using a 20-μm mesh net from June 2006 to December 2014 around Jeju Island including the East China Sea, and 16 of these species are new to Korean waters. A checklist of the three genera of dinoflagellates reported from coastal and oceanic Korean waters is presented. Short descriptions and synonyms are given for each spe-cies. The dinoflagellates of the family Dinophysaceae belong to mostly marine species, and include many tropical and/or subtropical species. Recently, the composition of dinoflagellate species has changed around Jeju Island as well as in Korean waters due to global warming and climate change. Tropical and subtropical dinoflagellates occur frequently in the coastal waters of Jeju Island, which reflects the ecosystem shift around the sea adjacent to Jeju Island from a temper-ate to a subtropical / tropical region.

Porphyra spp. (currently Porphyra and Pyropia) are major sources of seafood globally. In this study, we investigated the effects of ammonium concentration, water temperature, and thallus stocking density on N-ammonium uptake rate (NUR), tissue nutrients content, N–NH4 + filtration efficiency (NUE: nitrogen uptake efficiency %) of Pyropia yezoensis at a laboratory scale and in a mesoscale to evaluate the potential of this species as a biofilter. Additionally, photosynthetic activity was examined using Diving-PAM fluorometer to evaluate the health status. At a laboratory scale, the NUR and tissue nitrogen (N) content of P. yezoensis increased with increasing NH4 + concentrations in the medium. The NUR at thallus stocking densities of 5 and 10 g fresh weight (FW) L–1 were significantly higher than that at 20 g FW L–1. Effective quantum yield (∆ F/F’ m ) and tissue N content was significantly higher at all stocking densities than that at the beginning of experiment. The NUE was over 90 % at 10 and 17 °C, while all thalli cultured at 25 °C died after 5 days. In a mesoscale, the NUE at a thallus stocking density of 10.0 g FW L–1 was significantly higher than that at a stocking density of 5.0 g FW L–1. No differences in the NUE occurred between 10 °C and 17 °C. Photosynthetic activity (∆F/F’m and rETRmax) of P. yezoensis at optimal culture condition (10–12 °C and 10 g FW L–1) increased over time through the experiment. This indicates that thallus was healthy during culture and chlorophyll a fluorescence can be as a monitoring tool for evaluating the physiological status of seaweeds in an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture.

Marine microalgae are a promising source of organisms that can be cultured and targeted to isolate the broad spectrum of functional metabolites. In this study, two species of cyanobacteria, Chlorella ovalis Butcher and Nannchloropsis oculata Droop, one species of bacillariophyta, Phaeoductylum tricornutum Bohlin, and one species of Dinophyceae, Amphidinium carterae (Hulburt) were cultured and biomasses used to evaluate the proximate comical compositions. Among the determined proximate chemical compositions of the cultured marine microalgae, the highest content of crude proteins and lipids were exhibited in P. tricornutum and A. carterae, respectively. Solvent-solvent partition chromatography was subjected to fractionate each of the cultured species and separated n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and aqueous fractions. Nitric oxide production inhibitory level (%) and cytotoxicity effect on lipo-polysaccharide–induced RAW 264.7 macrophages were performed to determine the anti-inflammatory activity. N. oculata hexane and chloroform fractions showed significantly the strongest anti-inflammatory activity at 6.25 µg mL -1 concentration. The cancer cell growth inhibition (%) was determined on three different cell lines including HL-60 (a human promyelocytic leukemia cell line), A549 (a human lung carcinoma cell line), and B16F10 (a mouse melanoma cell line), respectively. Among the extracts, C. ovalis ethyl acetate and A. carterae chloroform fractions suppressed the growth of HL-60 cells significantly at 25 and 50 µg mL-1 concentrations. Thus, the cultured marine microalgae solvent extracts may have potentiality to isolate pharmacologically active metabolites further using advance chromatographic steps. Hence, the cultured marine microalgae can be described as a good candidate for the future therapeutic uses.

We isolated the unialgal strain of Cylindotheca closterium (Ehrenb.) Reimann et J. C. Lewin and produced an axenic strain using an antibiotic cocktail of enriched f/2 artificial seawater medium. The optimal growth conditions were estimated under 27 different combinations of temperature, salinity, and nutrients, and mass culture was performed based on the best specific growth conditions. Its antioxidant activities were determined from the extracts of methanol, water, and enzymes (proteases and carbohydrases). The maximum specific growth rate (μmax ) varied from 0.63 to 0.97 · d(-1) . The maximum cell density was 7.20 × 10(4) cells · mL(-1) , while the μmax was 0.82 · d(-1) in culture conditions of 20°C, 30 psu (practical salinity unit), and "F" nutrient concentrations on day 10 of the culture period. The scavenging rates for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical were 72.5% and 69.4% from Viscozyme and methanol extracts, respectively. The enzymatic extracts of C. closterium prepared by the hydrolyses of Amyloglucosidase (AMG) and Viscozyme showed 45.8% and 45.5% nitric-oxide-scavenging rates, slightly lower than the activity of alpha-tocopherol (α-tocopherol) but similar to butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). The extract from methanol and water showed 44.8% and 44.4% scavenging rates, statistically similar with BHT. The metal-chelating activities of the Kojizyme, Alcalase, methanol, Viscozyme, and Neutrase extracts were 67.1, 53.9, 53.2, 52.1, and 50.2 %, respectively, five to six times higher than the commercial antioxidants. The AMG, Viscozyme, and Neutrase extracts showed a remarkable linoleic acid peroxidation inhibition, which was higher than BHT and statistically similar with α-tocopherol.

Marine Chlorella ellipsoidea protein was hydrolyzed using Protamex, Kojizyme, Neutrase, Flavourzyme, Alcalase, trypsin, α-chymotrypsin, pepsin and papain. Alcalase-proteolytic hydrolysate exhibited the highest ACE inhibitory activity among them and was fractionated into three ranges of molecular weight (below 5 kDa, 5–10 kDa and above 10 kDa). The below 5 kDa fraction showed the highest ACE inhibitory activity and was used for subsequent purification steps. During consecutive purification, a potent ACE inhibitory peptide from marine C. ellipsoidea , which was composed of 4 amino acids, Val–Glu–Gly–Tyr (MW: 467.2 Da, IC 50 value: 128.4 μM), was isolated. Lineweaver–Burk plots suggest that the peptide purified acts as a competitive inhibitor against ACE and stable against gastrointestinal enzymes of pepsin, trypsin and α-chymotrypsin. Furthermore, antihypertensive effect in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) also revealed that oral administration of purified peptide can decrease systolic blood pressure significantly. The results suggest that marine C. ellipsoidea would be an attractive raw material for the manufacture of antihypertensive nutraceutical ingredients.

Although mathematical models suggest that competition between primary producers in response to dynamical changes in the availability of a limiting nutrient is non-linear, experimental data supporting this basic hypothesis are sparse. Using continuous culture systems with nitrate as a single limiting nutrient, we present results of competition experiments between 2 species of marine phytoplankton, a diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana and a coccolithophore Coccolithus braarudii. These 2 organisms of similar size represent biogeochemically and ecologically distinct functional groups. Consistent with classical resource competition theory, under steady-state nitrate limitation (i.e. continuous flow chemostats), the diatom was outcompeted by the coccolithophore. However, when pulses of nitrate were provided to the chemostats (i.e. non-equilibrium, dynamical conditions) the diatom outcompeted the coccolithophore. The rate of exclusion was a linear function of the fre- quency of nitrate pulses. These results experimentally demonstrate that dynamical nutrient supply allows co-existence of 2 primary producers competing for a single limiting nutrient and may help us to understand phytoplankton succession in the ocean.

An unarmored dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides has formed red tides responsible for fish mass mortalities especially in coastal areas of western Japan and southern Korea almost every summer to autumn. In laboratory culture, the optimum temperature for growth of the species is ca. 27 °C. Since the species cannot survive in water of temperatures of less than 10 °C, it was considered to over-winter in some certain regions as a motile form or resting cyst, and expand its distribution after the temperature increases to a level tolerable for growth. To determine the over-wintering regions and migration pattern of C. polykrikoides, occurrences of the motile cells were surveyed in the coastal and offshore areas of western Kyushu, Japan and south coast of the Korean Peninsula from April 2006 to August 2008. Cells of C. polykrikoides were found at 14 sites during the investigated period. Motile cells occurred throughout the year in Usuka Bay, Hirado of West Japan. From offshore regions of the Goto Islands and off Shin-Nagasaki Fishing Port, motile cells of C. polykrikoides were first detected from late May, and continuously occurred until February in Nama Bay of the Kami-Goto Islands. This first appearance was before red tides of C. polykrikoides reported at coastal areas in western Kyushu. In Korea, this species was first observed in May and disappeared after October in 2007. These occurrence patterns imply that Usuka Bay in Hirado is one of the over-wintering regions in western Kyushu, and also this species is possibly transported into the northern part of the East China Sea by the Tsushima Warm Current every year.

A variety of Cyclotella atomus were discovered among the epiphytic diatoms on eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) in Korean waters. Cyclotella atomus var. marina has a flat and disc-shaped valve, and is clearly differentiated into a striate marginal zone and a smooth central zone. The valves have a very small diameter ranging from 3.1-3.4 . This small diatom does not have any central ornamentation. The marginal striate zone has numerous granules toward the mantle. The valves have five or six marginal fultoportulae with two satellite pores and a single marginal rimoportula.

We report for the first time on the annual gametogenesis of the Burchardi's cockle, Acrosterigma (=Vasticardium) burchardi (Dunker, 1877) on a subtidal sand flat off southern Jeju Island, Korea. Seasonal changes in gamete development and oocyte size were investigated using histology. Intermingled ovaries and testis in the gonads located in the foot indicated that, like other cockles, A. burchardi is a functional hermaphrodite. In August, early developing oocytes and spermatogonia were observed in gonads suggesting that gametogenesis commenced when the water temperature reached 22.7–28.5EC. Early vitellogenic oocytes 8–10 μm in diameter appeared in gonads from September to November when water temperatures ranged from 16.9 to 22.2°C. Oocyte size increased exponentially from November (8 μm) to April (53 μm). Interest in plant-derived food additives has increased recently, with efforts to identify natural antioxidant sources to replace synthetic antioxidants. This study evaluated the antioxidant effects of organic solvent fractions of 80% methanol extracts from Pediastrum duplex and Dactylococcopsis fascicularis microalgae. Among the solvent fractions tested, the ethyl acetate and n-hexane fractions from P duplex effectively scavenged 79.8% and 74.5% of DPPH free radicals, respectively. The chloroform fraction from D. fascicularis showed the strongest scavenging ability (49.7%). The greatest scavenging of hydroxyl radicals (73.1%) was exhibited by the 80% methanol extract from P duplex. Aqueous residue and ethyl acetate fraction from P duplex provided the strongest nitric oxide scavenging (57.7%) and metal chelating effect (82.1%), respectively. Chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions from P duplex and n-hexane fraction from D. fascicularis exhibited significantly greater inhibition of lipid peroxidation than the commercial antioxidants. These results suggested that P duplex and D. fascicularis microalgae having potential anti oxidative compounds with various properties could be utilized in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

In this study, we assessed the antioxidant properties of tidal pool microalgae, Halochlorococcum porphyrae and Oltamannsiellopsis unicellularis, from Jeju Island, Korea. Specifically, the antioxidant activity of fractions isolated from 80% methanol extract, and digests produced from five proteases and carbohydrases, were investigated. Almost all the fractions and the 80% methanol extract exhibited higher effects on 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest superoxide anion scavenging activity, while both n-hexane and chloroform fractions exhibited higher H2O2 scavenging activity. Among the enzymatic digests from H. porphyrae and O. unicellularis, all the digests exhibited remarkable DPPH scavenging activities. In nitric oxide inhibition, all the digests recorded significantly higher effects than those of the commercial antioxidants (p < 0.05). Flavozyme and Neutrase digests from H. porphyrae, and Termamyl and Alcalase digests from O. unicellularis, showed significant effects in metal chelating. Lipid peroxidation was significantly inhibited in the ethyl acetate fraction, in the Celluclast and Protamex digests from H. porphyrae, and in the chloroform fraction from O. unicellularis. These findings suggest that the two tidal pool microalgae tested in this study are rich in potential antioxidative compounds, the specific properties of which can be considered for use in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

In this study, we focused on natural water-soluble antioxidants from fresh water microalgae, Pediastrum duplex and Dactylococcopsis fascicularis from Jeju Island, Korea. They were prepared by enzymatic digestion using five carbohydrases (Viscozyme, Celluclast, AMG, Termamyl and Ultraflo) and five proteases (Protamex, Kojizyme, Neutrase, Flavourzyme and Alcalase), and the potential antioxidant activity of each was assessed. All enzymatic digests from P. duplex showed significant DPPH scavenging effects. Termamyl (60.6%) digest from P. duplex possessed the highest effects on hydrogen peroxide scavenging. Celluclast (58.1%) and Kojizyme digests (56.9%) from D. fascicularis possessed higher effects on superoxide anion radical scavenging. All enzymatic digests exhibited significant effects on both NO· scavenging and metal chelating. Lipid peroxidation was significantly in inhibited Viscozyme, Termamyl and Kojizyme digests from P. duplex and Ultraflo, Protamex, Kojizyme and Alcalase digests from D. fascicularis. These data suggest that enzymatic digests of the fresh water microalgae, P. duplex and D. fascicularis might be valuable sources of antioxidant which can be applied in food and pharmaceutical industry.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anions, which are produced because of exogenous factors (tobacco smoke, ionizing radiation and certain pollutants) and endogenous factors (normal aerobic respiration) have been implicated in cellular processes such as mutagenesis, carcinogenesis and premature aging. ROS have the ability to react with a large variety of easily oxidisable cellular components, such as proteins, lipids and lipoproteins (Fridovich 1995). Oxidation is one of the major reasons of food deterioration, resulting to the destruction of fat-soluble vitamins and development of off colors and toxicants (Yang et al. 2000; Ukeda et al. 2002). Besides, in the food industry lipid peroxidation is an important deteriorative reaction during processing and storage. Commercial antioxidant supplements such as butylated hydroxyl anisole (BHA), butylated hydroxy tolouene (BHT), α-tocopherol and propyl gallate (PG) have been used in order to reduce oxidative damages in human body (Sherwin 1990; Gulcin et al. 2002). However, it is suspected that those antioxidants are responsible for some side effects such as liver damage and carcinogenesis. Antioxidants are involved with the oxidation mechanism by scavenging free radicals, chelating catalytic metals and by acting as oxygen scavengers (Shahidi and Wanasundara 1992; Buyukokuroglu et al. 2001). As a natural antioxidant source, plants have an ability to absorb the sun’s radiation for generating high levels of oxygen as secondary metabolites of photosynthesis. In this study, we focused on natural water-soluble antioxidants from the Jeju benthic diatoms, Achnanthes longipes, Navicula sp. and Amphora coffeaeformis. They were prepared by enzymatic digestion using five carbohydrases (Viscozyme, Celluclast, AMG, Termamyl and Ultraflo) and five proteases (Protamex, Kojizyme, Neutrase, Flavourzyme and Alcalase) and their potential antioxidant activity was assessed. Among the enzymatic digests, Neutrase digest from A. coffeaeformis exhibited the highest effect in DPPH radical scavenging. Flavourzyme (48.7%), Viscozyme (47.4%) and Celluclast (45.7%) digests from Navicula sp. exhibited higher O.?₂ radical scavenging activity. Viscozyme digest from A. coffeaeformis (45.9%) possessed the highest effects in hydroxyl radical scavenging. Termamyl (89.3%) and Protamex (88.8%) digests from A. coffeaeformis had strong metal chelating activity. Lipid peroxidation was significantly inhibited in Termamyl and Kojizyme digests from A. longipes, AMG and Termamyl digests from Navicula sp. and Kojizyme digest from A. coffeaeformisi. These data suggest that enzymatic digests of the Jeju benthic diatoms might be valuable sources of antioxidant which can be applied in food and pharmaceutical industry.

Benthic diatoms are a commonly used food source in shellfish aquaculture. Diatoms of the genus Navicula are the most abundant benthic diatoms occurring year-round on the coast of Jeju Island, Korea. We isolated an axenic strain of N. incerta Grunow; estimated its growth characteristics under 27 different combinations of temperature, salinity, and nutrients; and determined its biochemical composition and antioxidant activities. The maximum specific growth rate (lmax), defined as the increase in cell density per unit time, was 0.81‐1.04 AEd )1 , and the maximum cell density, 7.99 · 10 5 cells AEmL )1 , was reached at 0.88 AEd )1 lmax ,2 0� C, 30 psu salinity, and F ⁄2 nutrient concentration on day 12 of the culture period. The approximate cellular composition was as follows: 7.0 ± 0.04% protein, 1.7 ± 0.28% lipid, 12.8 ± 0.85% carbohydrate, 68.4 ± 0.09% ash, and 10.1 ± 0.44% moisture. The antioxidant properties of N. incerta were determined for various extracts. The rates of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free-radical scavenging for Neutrase and methanol extracts were 81.6% and 62.8%, respectively. Flavourzyme extract had a superoxidescavenging rate of 57.7%. Kojizyme and Ultraflo extracts had nitric-oxide-scavenging rates of 42.2% and 40.6%, respectively, significantly higher than commercial antioxidants, such as a-tocopherol and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). The metalchelating activities of the methanol, Neutrase, and Termamyl extracts were 68.5%, 45.2%, and 41.2%, respectively, four to six times higher than commercial antioxidants. The Termamyl extract showed the highest linoleic acid peroxidation inhibition, exceeding a-tocopherol and on par with BHT.

The dynamics of phytoplankton abundance with seasonal variation in physicochemical conditions were investigated monthly at 10 stations around the Chagwi-do off the west coast of Jeju Island, Korea, including inshore, middle shore, and offshore in the marine ranching area from September 2004 to November 2005. Water temperature varied from 12.1 to 28.9°C (average 18.8°C), and salinity from 28.9 to 34.9 psu (average 33.7 psu). The chlorophyll a concentration was 0.02-2.05 µg L1 (average 0.70 µg L1), and the maximum concentration occurred in the bottom layer in April. A total of 294 phytoplankton species belonging to 10 families was identified: 182 Bacillariophyceae, 52 Dinophyceae, 9 Chlorophyceae, 12 Cryptophyceae, 6 Chrysophyceae, 4 Dictyophyceae, 13 Euglenophyceae, 6 Prymnesiophyceae, 5 Prasinophyceae, and 5 Raphidophyceae. The standing crop was 2.21-48.69x104 cells L1 (average 9.23x 104 cells L1), and the maximum occurred in the bottom layer in April. Diatoms were most abundant throughout the year, followed by dinoflagellates and phytoflagellates. A phytoplankton bloom occurred twice: once in spring, peaking in April, and once in autumn, peaking in November. The spring bloom was represented by fourChaetoceros species andSkeletonema costatum; each contributed 10–20% of the total phytoplankton abundance. The autumn bloom comprised dinoflagellates, diatoms, and phytoflagellates, of which dinoflagellates were predominant.Gymnodinium conicum, Prorocentrum micans, andP. triestinum each contributed over 10% of the total phytoplankton abundance.

The enzymatic extracts from seven species of microalgae (Pediastrum duplex, Dactylococcopsis fascicularis, Halochlorococcum porphyrae, Oltmannsiellopsis unicellularis, Achnanthes longipes, Navicula sp. and Amphora coffeaeformis) collected from three habitats (freshwater, tidal pool, and coastal benthic) at Jeju Island in Korea were investigated for their antioxidant activity. Of the extracts tested, the AMG 300 L (an exo 1, 4-alpha-D-glucosidase) extract of P. duplex, the Viscozyme extract of Navicula sp., and the Celluclast extract of A. longipes provided the most potential as antioxidants. Meanwhile, the Termamyl extract of P. duplex in an H(2)O(2) scavenging assay exhibited an approximate 60% scavenging effect. In this study, we report that the DNA damage inhibitory effects of P. duplex (Termamyl extract) and D. fascicularis (Kojizyme extract) were nearly 80% and 69% respectively at a concentration of 100 microg/ml. Thus, it is suggested that the microalgae tested in this study yield promising DNA damage inhibitory properties on mouse lymphoma L 5178 cells that are treated with H(2)O(2). Therefore, microalgae such as P. duplex may be an excellent source of naturally occurring antioxidant compounds with potent DNA damage inhibition potential.

Benthic diatoms are known as a good food for shellfish in nature and in commercial hatchery of Jeju Island, Korea. Grammatophora marina is commonly found as dominant benthic micro-algae in Jeju coastal waters throughout the year. To know the best growth conditions of this species, culture was done in terms of three parameters; water temperature, salinity and nutrients. Each parameter was controlled by temperature of 15, 20 and 25°C; salinity of 25, 30 and 35 psu; and nutrient concentrations of 50, 100 and 200%. F/2 media was used with artificial seawater for the culture, which was continued for two weeks with L:D cycle 12:12 by using fluorescent light. Maximum specific growth rate was recorded 1.68 d ‐1 at temperature of 25°C with salinity of 35 psu and nutrient concentration of 200% on 6 th day during the culture period. Maximum biomass was also observed 4.9 × 10 5 cells mL ‐1 in the same condition. This species may belong to the euryhaline and eutrophic habitat with warm condition. For nutritional aspects of this species, protein, lipid and carbohydrate were measured. The value of protein, lipid and carbohydrate was 4.96%, 15.82% and 5.65%, respectively. The antioxidant activities of 80% methanolic extract were 46.7%, 23.7% and 23.8% on DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylydrazy) radical, superoxide anion radical and hydrogen peroxide scavenging, respectively. Percentage metal chelating activity was 81.2%. Enzymatic extracts of Alcalase and Ultraflow showed remarkable scavenging activities on DPPH radical (86.5% and 57.2%, respectively), and superoxide anion scavenging activities were 45.3% and 41.4% from Kojizyme and Viscozyme extracts, respectively. Extract of Protomex revealed 24.8% activity on hydrogen peroxide and Neutase showed 30.8% on hydroxyl radical scavenging effects. Celluclast and Viscozyme extracts showed 33.2% and 32.1% activities on nitric oxide scavenging, respectively, while Alcalase showed 61.5% on metal chelating. This species contains higher lipids among the biochemical compounds and higher metal chelating activities from both 80% methanolic and enzymatic extracts.

A study on the seasonal changes in the phytoplankton community was carried out in four aquaculture ponds of Bangladesh over a period of 16 months from August 2000 to November 2001. Out of 45 phytoplankton species identified, 30 belong to Cyanophyceae, 7 to Chlorophyceae, 5 to Bacillariophyceae and 3 to Euglenophyceae. The highest phytoplankton abundance was observed in spring followed by early autumn, summer, and the lowest was in winter. The annual succession of Cyanophyceae was characterized by spring and early autumn period dominated by Microcystis sp. Anabaena sp. and Planktolymbya sp. with Microcystis sp. as the main blue-green algae represented. Chlorophyceae was characterized by rainy season domination of Chlorella vulgaris, Pediastrum sp. and Scenedesmus denticulatus with maximum abundance of Chlorella vulgaris. Whereas Bacillariophyceae was dominant during the winter period. Navicula angusta and Cyclotella meneghiniana were the most frequently occurring species of Bacillariophyceae throughout the study period. Euglenophyceae was dominant in late autumn and Euglena sp. was the dominant species. The effect of various physicochemical water quality parameters on the seasonal distribution and succession of the above mentioned phytoplankton population as well as the interaction and eutrophication are discussed.

A study on seasonal characteristics of phytoplankton dynamics and environmental factors was carried out at four stations including Mara-do and U-do located in the western and eastern coast of Jeju Island in southern Korea from April 2003 to March 2004. Out of 101 phytoplankton species identified, 84 belong to Bacillariophyceae, 9 Dinophyceae, 6 phytoflagellates and 2 coccolithophorids, and the highest value of species diversity was observed in April. Phytoplankton was more abundant at the western coast than at the eastern coast from March to September and its highest abundance was 49.24 10 cells L at Mara-do in July. The pennate diatoms were more abundant at the western coast than at the eastern coast with the highest abundance of 38.75 10 cells L at Mara-do in July, and during this period Nitzschia longissima contributed 68.5% of the total phytoplankton abundance. Naviculaceae was more abundant at Gosan (western coast) in November when Stauroneis membranacea represented 80.1% of the abundance. Leptocylindrus dances contributed 49.4% of the abundance at U-do in November. Dinophyceae was more abundant at U-do in August. Water temperature and pH fluctuated from 11.7 to 27.1 and from 7.31 to 8.70, respectively. Water temperature of Mara-do was about 1-2 higher than the other stations. Salinity varied from 30.4 to 35.0 psu with the minimum in rainy season and the maximum at the end of winter. The concentration of NH-N, NO-N, NO-N, PO-P and SiO-Si ranged 0.07-6.79, 1.0-62.0, 1.0-8.0, 1.0-7.0 and 7.0-191.0 g-at L, respectively. Chlorophyll a concentrations varied from 0.10 to 1.17 g L. NH-N concentrations were high at U-do from May to December, and at Mara-do from January to February. The high concentrations of NO-N were found at Mara-do from June to September and at U-do from January to May. The effects of various physicochemical parameters on the seasonal distribution and succession of phytoplankton population suggest that there is a classical pattern of phytoplankton dynamics in Jeju coastal waters.

Five microalgal species isolated from the Jeju coast and four microalgal stock strains in hatchery were cultured in order to investigate their adapation to extreme changes in environmental factors such as salinity, water temperatue, adn nutrients. In case of salinity variation, Nitzschia sp. of Bacillariophyceae, Isochrysis galbana of Haptophyceae and Tetraselmis gracilis of Prasinophyceae showed optimum growth at the low salinity of 20 and 25 psu. Amphora coffeaeformis and Chetoceros simplex of Bacillariophyceae, and Pavlova lutheri of Haptophyceae adapted well at the relatively high salinities of 30 and 35 psu. However Phaeodactylum tricornutum of Bacillariophyceae and Chlorella sp. of Chlorophyceae showed euryhaline property In case of water temperature variation, most of all the species studied wer inhibited at 10℃. C. simplex, Nitzschia sp., p. tricornutum, Chlorella sp. and T. gracilis grew well at above 20℃. A. coffeaeformis, I. galbana and P. lutheri adapted also at the high temperature of 30℃. Each microalgal strain showed different growth rates and its maximum biomass. Generally microalgal populations from the Jeju coast grow well in relatively high salinity and high water temperature. Their growth were inhibited at low water temperature, but not likely affected at low salinity. This study indicates that the microalgal populations could not be affected by abnormally low salinity phenomena, which have happened occasionally around the west Jeju coast in summer and have led macrobenthic animals to mass mortality.

A population dynamics model, originally derived for the Eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica and later modified for the Pacific oyster C. gigas in Japan, is applied to investigate the effect of food composition on the growth rate of C. gigas, which is in aquaculture in Kamakman Bay, Korea. Annual environmental cycles of temperature, salinity and particle concentration as well as various measures of food are used in the model. The model reproduces the general features of observed oyster growth in the different regions of the bay. Simulations show that chlorophyll-a is an inadequate measure of food for oysters. Using labile lipid+protein+carbohydrate as a food source results in higher growth rates than observed, suggesting that a surplus of potential food is available in the water column, but that much of it is not utilized by oysters and that little of it is present as chlorophyll containing cells. Assuming that most of the food is available as small particles, which are filtered at low retention efficiency by oysters, results in simulated growth rates that are similar to observed field growth rates. The oyster model used in this research is shown to be generally applicable to the Pacific oyster, C. gigas.

The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical utility of fluoride-18 positron emission tomography (¹⁸F-PET)/CT with that of conventional (99m)Tc-methylene diphosphonate (MDP) bone scan in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) with osteoarthritis.24 patients with TMD who underwent both ¹⁸F-PET/CT and (99m)Tc-MDP bone scans for diagnostic work-up were enrolled. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ)-to-skull uptake ratio, TMJ-to-muscle uptake ratio and TMJ-to-spine uptake ratio on ¹⁸F-PET/CT and the TMJ uptake ratio on bone scan were measured.Of the 48 TMJs in 24 patients, 35 TMJs were diagnosed as TMD with osteoarthritis, 8 TMJs as TMD with anterior disc displacement (ADD), and the remaining 5 TMJs showed no evidence of TMD (NED). All three uptake ratios on ¹⁸F-PET/CT and the TMJ uptake ratio on the bone scan tended to be higher in TMD with osteoarthritis than in TMD with ADD or NED. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis for detecting TMD with osteoarthritis indicated that the TMJ-to-skull uptake ratio, TMJ-to-muscle uptake ratio and TMJ-to-spine uptake ratio on PET/CT (0.819, 0.771 and 0.813, respectively) showed higher area under the ROC curve value than the TMJ ratio on bone scan (0.714). The TMJ-to-skull uptake ratio on PET/CT showed the highest sensitivity (89%) and accuracy (81%) of all uptake ratios.¹⁸F-PET/CT can help diagnose TMD with osteoarthritis with superior diagnostic ability and is a suitable alternative modality to a conventional (99m)Tc-MDP bone scan.

Over a five-year period, this study examined the overall impact of coal power plant cooling processes on entrained copepods and the local plankton community on the west coast of Korea. Mortality differences between the intake and discharge water of the single most dominant copepod, Acartia hongi, were positively correlated with temperature differences between the two locations. Laboratory tests showed copepod sensitivity to temperature increase, and with very low chlorine concentration applied, thermal stress was the major source of copepod mortality. Chlorophyll a concentration, ciliate abundance, and total copepod abundance at the intake showed no discernable differences from the values at the discharge. Most likely, this was due to rapid mixing of the population in the discharge water with adjacent populations in the macrotidal open coastal water environment.

The importance of phytoplankton contributing more than 50% of the global amount of photosynthesis has been emphasized for a long time. Sometimes, the over-growth of phytoplankton causes the negative influence such as red-tide phenomenon on marine ecological environments. Therefore, the measurement of the mobility of phytoplankton is important. In this study, the mobility of the benthic dinoflagellate, Amphidinium carterae Hulburt (A. Carterae) incubated by f/2 medium was investigated using high-frequency ultrasound. Backscattering signal from A. Carterae was measured for 2 s in every 2 min by a 40-MHz ultrasound transducer, and the integrated backscattering power calculation was followed. The mobility of A. carterae in response to the light was illustrated by M-mode image of the echoed signals. The mobility of A. carterae was estimated to about 0.4 mm/s for the upward movement in response to light, while its sedimentation rate was measured to about 0.1 mm/s in a dark environment. This study suggests that mobility of benthic dinoflagellates responding to light can be measured by M-mode imaging of high-frequency ultrasound. Phytoplankton is a primary producer in the ocean, and its vegetative activity plays an important role in controlling the global environment. In this study, the high-frequency acoustic signals were collected to evaluate the photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton during a day. The integrated backscatter power (IBP) from a dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides was measured by a 5 MHz acoustic system during a 5-day cultivation period with a 14 h:10 h light:dark cycle. IBP increased by 0.6 dB in five days, but varied by 0.83 ± 0.1 dB during an irradiance cycle. The daily increase in IBP was a result of an increase in the number of cells during cultivation, while the diel variation was partly resulted from the variation of volume of cells by photosynthesis. In addition, cell division and separation might affect IBP. IBP of another dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae Hulburt was also measured by a 10MHz transducer during a 3-day cultivation period while cell volume and photosynthetic capacity were measured four times a day (07:00, 12:00, 19:00, 24:00). This study suggests that high-frequency acoustics may be a meaningful tool to investigate the photosynthetic metabolism of a phytoplankton cell.
