p19arf, primarily known as a tumor suppressor, has also been reported to play an essential role in normal development of mouse eyes. Consistently, lack of p19arf has been associated with ocular defects, but the mixed background of the knockout (KO) mouse strain used raised a concern on the accuracy of the phenotypes observed in association with the targeted gene due to genetic heterogeneity. We carried out a study to investigate into the effect of genetic background on the manifestation of p19arf KO associated phenotypes. We characterized the phenotypes of novel p19arf KO mouse lines generated in FVB/N and C57BL/6J using a transcription activator-like effector nuclease (TALEN) system in comparison to the reported phenotypes of three other p19arf-deficient mouse lines generated using homologous recombination. Ninety-five percent of FVB/N-p19arf KO mice showed ocular opacity from week 4 after birth which worsened rapidly until week 6, while such abnormality was absent in C57BL/6J-p19arf KO mice up to the age of 26 weeks. Histopathological analysis revealed retrolental masses and dysplasia in the retinal layer in FVB/N-p19arf KO mice from week 4. Besides these, both strains developed normally from birth to week 26 without increased tumorigenesis except for a subcutaneous tumor found in a C57BL/6J-p19arf KO mouse. Our findings demonstrated surprisingly variable manifestation of p19arf-linked phenotypes between FVB/N and C57BL/6J mice, and furthermore between our mouse lines and the established lines, indicating a critical impact of genetic background on functional study of genes using gene targeting strategies in mice.

Background The common marmoset is widely used in current biomedical research for various research fields. We observed macrocytic anemia in a perinatal common marmoset with gradual weight loss and diarrhea. The objective of this case report is to describe the diagnosis and treatment of macrocytic anemia in a perinatal common marmoset. Case presentation A 7-year-old female common marmoset showed clinical signs of gradual weight loss and intermittent diarrhea beginning 3 months after giving birth. Macrocytic anemia was diagnosed due to a decreased red blood cell (RBC) count, low hemoglobin level, and increased mean corpuscular volume (MCV). Multivitamins containing cobalamin and folate were administered for 7 days, and the patient’s RBC count recovered to near the normal range with this treatment. Conclusions Macrocytic anemia can be diagnosed by evaluating the MCV on a complete blood count (CBC) and cobalamin or folate levels and be treated by supplementation with cobalamin and folate. Such supplements may be needed during pregnancy and lactation in female common marmosets and/or in animals with chronic diarrhea.

Recombination activating gene-2 (RAG-2) plays a crucial role in the development of lymphocytes by mediating recombination of T cell receptors and immunoglobulins, and loss of RAG-2 causes severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) in humans. Rag-2 knockout mice created using homologous recombination in ES cells have served as a valuable immunodeficient platform, but concerns have persisted on the specificity of Rag-2-related phenotypes in these animals due to the limitations associated with the genome engineering method used. To precisely investigate the function of Rag-2, we recently established a new Rag-2 knockout FVB mouse line (Rag-2-/-) manifesting lymphopenia by employing a CRISPR/Cas9 system at Center for Mouse Models of Human Disease. In this study, we further characterized their phenotypes focusing on histopathological analysis of lymphoid organs. Rag-2-/- mice showed no abnormality in development compared to their WT littermates for 26 weeks. At necropsy, gross examination revealed significantly smaller spleens and thymuses in Rag-2-/- mice, while histopathological investigation revealed hypoplastic white pulps with intact red pulps in the spleen, severe atrophy of the thymic cortex and disappearance of follicles in lymph nodes. However, no perceivable change was observed in the bone marrow. Moreover, our analyses showed a specific reduction of lymphocytes with a complete loss of mature T cells and B cells in the lymphoid organs, while natural killer cells and splenic megakaryocytes were increased in Rag-2-/- mice. These findings indicate that our Rag-2-/- mice show systemic lymphopenia with the relevant histopathological changes in the lymphoid organs, suggesting them as an improved Rag-2-related immunodeficient model.

Placenta specific 8 (PLAC8, also known as ONZIN) is a multi-functional protein that is highly expressed in the intestine, lung, spleen, and innate immune cells, and is involved in various diseases, including cancers, obesity, and innate immune deficiency. Here, we generated a Plac8 knockout mouse using the CRISPR/Cas9 system. The Cas9 mRNA and two single guide RNAs targeting a region near the translation start codon at Plac8 exon 2 were microinjected into mouse zygotes. This successfully eliminated the conventional translation start site, as confirmed by Sanger sequencing and PCR genotyping analysis. Unlike the previous Plac8 deficient models displaying increased adipose tissue and body weights, our male Plac8 knockout mice showed rather lower body weight than sex-matched littermate controls, though the only difference between these two mouse models is genetic context. Differently from the previously constructed embryonic stem cell-derived Plac8 knockout mouse that contains a neomycin resistance cassette, this knockout mouse model is free from a negative selection marker or other external insertions, which will be useful in future studies aimed at elucidating the multi-functional and physiological roles of PLAC8 in various diseases, without interference from exogenous foreign DNA.

Background: Extended endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress may initiate apoptotic pathways in cancer cells, and ER stress has been reported to possibly increase tumor death in cancer therapy. We previously reported that caspase-8 played an important role in compound K-induced apoptosis via activation of caspase-3 directly or indirectly through Bid cleavage, cytochrome c release, and caspase-9 activation in HL-60 human leukemia cells. The mechanisms leading to apoptosis in A549 and SK-MES-1 human lung cancer cells and the role of ER stress have not yet been understood. Methods: The apoptotic effects of compound K were analyzed using flow cytometry, and the changes in protein levels were determined using Western blot analysis. The intracellular calcium levels were monitored by staining with Fura-2/AM and Fluo-3/AM. Results: Compound K-induced ER stress was confirmed through increased phosphorylation of eIF2α and protein levels of GRP78/BiP, XBP-1S, and IRE1α in human lung cancer cells. Moreover, compound-K led to the accumulation of intracellular calcium and an increase in m-calpain activities that were both significantly inhibited by pretreatment either with BAPTA-AM (an intracellular Ca2+ chelator) or dantrolene (an RyR channel antagonist). These results were correlated with the outcome that compound K induced ER stress-related apoptosis through caspase-12, as z-ATAD-fmk (a specific inhibitor of caspase-12) partially ameliorated this effect. Interestingly, 4-PBA (ER stress inhibitor) dramatically improved the compound K-induced apoptosis. Conclusion: Cell survival and intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis during ER stress in human lung cancer cells are important factors in the induction of the compound K-induced apoptotic pathway. We examine the information transmission between the Service Industrial Production Index and the Service Industrial Wholesale and Retail Index, based on the returns data offered by the Korea Bank. The data includes daily return data from January 2000 to September 2015. Utilizing a dynamic analytical tool-the VAR model, Granger Causality test, Impulse Response Function and Variance Decomposition have been implemented. The results of the analysis are as follows. Firstly, results of Granger Causality test suggests the existence of mutual causality the Service Industrial Production Index precede and have explanatory power the Service Industrial Wholesale and Retail Index However the results also identified a greater causality and explanatory power of the Service Industrial Wholesale and Retail Index over the Service Industrial Production Index. Secondly, the results of impulse response function suggest that the Service Industrial Production Index show immediate response to the Service Industrial Wholesale and Retail Index and are influenced by till time 5 From time 2, the impact gradually disappears. Also the Service Industrial Wholesale and Retail Index show immediate response to the Service Industrial Production Index and are influenced by till time 2.5, the impact gradually disappears. Lastly, the variance decomposition analysis shows that the changes of return of Service Industrial Production Index are dependent on those of the Service Industrial Wholesale and Retail Index. This implies that returns on the Service Industrial Production Index have a significant influence over returns on the Service Industrial Wholesale and Retail Index. It contributes to the understanding of market price formation function through analysis of detached the Service Industrial Production Index and Service Industrial Wholesale and Retail Index. Finally, our results can be used as a guide by the Korea Bank and Republic of Korea and as well as Statistics Korea.

A suitable liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method is required to determine pelubiprofen and its active metabolite, trans-alcohol (M-D), in human plasma for pharmacokinetic studies of pelubiprofen preparations. After one-step liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) using methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), pelubiprofen, M-D, and tolbutamide (the internal standard, IS) were eluted from a Capcellpak C18 ACR column using a gradient mobile phase consisting of 0.1% formic acid in water and acetonitrile at a flow rate 0.35mL/min. The achieved lower limits of quantitation (LLOQ) of pelubiprofen and M-D were both 15ng/mL (S/N>10) and the standard calibration curves for pelubiprofen and M-D were linear (correlation coefficients >0.99) over the studied concentration range (15-2000ng/mL). Intra- and inter-day precisions were within 7.62% for all analytes and the deviation of assay accuracies was within ±13.23%. The developed method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study of pelubiprofen in healthy Korean male volunteers.

In this study, we investigated the gastroprotective effect of an isopropanol extract from the aerial parts of Artemisia princeps (IPAP) and developed a gastroretentive floating tablet of IPAP (IPAP-FR) for maximized local gastroprotective effects. Pre-treatment with IPAP ameliorated the gastric mucosal hemorrhagic lesions in ethanol/HCl- or indomethacin- treated rats. IPAP decreased mucosal hemorrhage of gastric ulcers induced by ethanol or indomethacin plus pyloric ligation in rats. The optimized floating tablet, IPAP-FR, floated on medium surface with more sustained eupatilin release compared to the non-floating control tablet. X-ray photographs in beagle dogs showed that IPAPFR was retained for > 2 h in the stomach. In the ethanol-induced gastric ulcer rat model, the gastric hemorrhagic lesion was improved more substantially with IPAP-FR compared to the non-floating control tablet. Based on these data, our data suggest that IPAP-FR has an improved therapeutic potential for the treatment of gastric ulcer.

New occurrences in Korean waters were recorded for two penaeid species: Atypopenaeus stenodactylus (Stimpson, 1860) and Metapenaeopsis toloensis Hall, 1962, which were previously known from the Indo-West Pacific up to southern Japan. The speci mens were collected from the southeastern coast of Korea by a shrimp beam trawl. The former is the only known member of the genus Atypopenaeus and the latter is the sixth species of the genus Metapenaeopsis reported in Korea. Morphological descriptions and illustrations with color photographs of the specimens are given. At present, the Korean Penaeidae consist of 20 species in 11 genera. A key to the Korean genera of family Penaeidae is also presented.

Three species of pelagic sergestid shrimps, Deosergestes seminudus (Hansen, 1919), Sergia lucens (Hansen, 1922) and S. talismani (Barnard, 1947), were identified based on collections by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute from the Korean coast of the Yellow Sea between 2003 and 2011. They are herein reported for the first time from the Yellow Sea. Morpho logical descriptions and illustrations with color photographs of all species are also given. With the addition of these species, the family Sergestidae in the Korean waters now comprises five species belonging to three genera. Finally, a key to the Korean genus and species of the family Sergestidae is presented.

Five scyllarine lobster species, belonging to the family Scyllaridae, are described from Korean waters: Chelarctus cultrifer (Ortmann, 1897), Crenarctus bicuspidatus (De Man, 1905), Galearctus kitanoviriosus (Harada, 1962), G. timidus (Holthuis, 1960), and Petrarctus brevicornis (Holthuis, 1946). Of these, three species, C. bicuspidatus, G. timidus, and P. brevicornis are new to Korean marine carcinological fauna. This report extends the known range of G. timidus to the southern coast of Korea from Taiwan in the East China Sea. Excluding C. bicuspidatus and G. kitanoviriosus, the other three species are relatively rare in Korean waters. They are described herein with color photographs, and a key to the Korean genera and species of Scyllarinae is also presented.

This study is to find out the distribution characteristic of Octopus minor in the Tando Bay on the southwest coast of Korea with conducting surveys from May of 2006 to April of 2007. Surveys were carried out at 20 stations on 2 and 3 tide time in the low speed of high tide at night and conducted during 30minutes (4 times fishing) per station. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) was estimated by total catch per 500hooks at each station. Monthly CPUE showed that they put highest in October, November, April and June at 10.4, 10.5, 9.4 and 7.7 individuals respectively. On the other hand, CPUE put lowest in January, the coldest month, and August, the hottest month, at 0.2 and 0.3 individuals respectively. As for geographical mantle length distribution, average mantle length ranged from 6.2cm to 7.3cm at stations near the tidal channels (St. 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19 and 20), and was smaller than 6.0cm at stations located inside of bay (St. 2, 3, 7, 11, 12 and 17). In terms of geographical distribution density, CPUE showed higher than 8.0 at St.4 in Changmaeri, St.8 in Taecheonri, St.13 near Seondo, St.18 in Naeri and St.14 in western part of Tando which are located near the main tidal channels. And distribution density showed low that CPUE was lower than 5.0 individuals at stations located inside of bay (St. 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 16 and 20). Through the results, the difference of distribution density reflects that distribution of Octopus minor is affected by direction of current and inflow of pollutant from land in direct. Therefore, it is considered that bottom composition of tidal flat and distribution of live food are the crucial cause of identifying the distribution characteristics of Octopus minor. For this reason, it is judged to need additional research on it.

The species composition and seasonal variation of fisheries resources in Jinhae bay and Jinju bay, were studied using shrimp beam trawl through a year of 2010. During the study period, a total of 117 species were collected in Jinhae bay. Species included were 63 species in Pisces and 24 in Crustacea. And a total of 106 species were collected in Jinju bay. Species included were 57 species in Pisces and 31 in Crustacea. The dominant species were Zoarces gilli, Crangon hakodatei and Oratosquilla oratoria in Jinhae bay, and Crangon hakodatei, Leiognathus nuchalis and Charybdis bimaculata in Jinju bay. The samples were mainly grouped according to the location and season on the SOM. Group 1 with sample sites in Jinju bay, was characterized by high values of Parapenaeopsis tenella, Leiognathus nuchalis and Hexagrammos otakii. Group 2 with sample sites in April, were dominant Crangon hakodatei and Luidia quinaria. The samples in Group 3 were high values of Charybdis bimaculata and Pleuronichthys cornutus. Group 4 with sample sites in Jinhae bay, was characterized by high densities of Zoarces gilli and Pholis fangi. The dominant species, Crangon hakodatei, were catched egg-bearing females until June. Zoarces gilli and Leiognathus nuchalis were presented small size individuals during study period. It represented that study area is an important role in spawning and nursery ground for fisheries resources.

Purpose Pelubiprofen is a novel nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic drug with at least similar efficacy and better tolerability compared with other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic drugs such as naproxen and aceclofenac. Eperisone hydrochloride is a centrally acting muscle relaxant that performs by blocking calcium channels. The combined use of pelubiprofen and eperisone hydrochloride is increasingly anticipated to promote the clinical effectiveness of pelubiprofen in relieving musculoskeletal symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and low back pain. No published data are yet available, however, regarding the pharmacokinetic interactions between these 2 drugs when administered concurrently. The objective of this study was to evaluate any pharmacokinetic interactions between pelubiprofen and eperisone hydrochloride in healthy Korean male volunteers. Methods This was a randomized, open-label, crossover study. Each participant was randomly assigned to 1 of 6 treatment sequences and orally received either 45-mg sustained-release pelubiprofen, 75-mg sustained-release eperisone hydrochloride, or both as a single dose in each treatment period, with a 7-day washout period between each treatment. Serial blood samples were collected over 24 hours after dosing, and plasma concentrations of each drug and the major active metabolite of pelubiprofen (trans-alcohol pelubiprofen) were determined by using a validated HPLC-MS/MS system. Pharmacokinetic analyses were conducted by using noncompartmental methods. Findings A total of 24 men (mean ± standard deviation of: age, 29 ± 4 years; weight, 72.5 ± 7.8 kg; body mass index, 23.4 ± 1.9 kg/m 2 ) were enrolled, and 23 participants completed the study. For pelubiprofen, the geometric mean ratios (90% CIs) of C max and AUC 0–∞ were 1.02 (0.87–1.19) and 0.97 (0.88–1.07), respectively. For the major active metabolite of pelubiprofen (trans-alcohol pelubiprofen), the geometric mean ratios (90% CIs) of C max and AUC 0–∞ were 1.05 (0.98–1.13) and 1.04 (1.01–1.07). For eperisone, the geometric mean ratios (90% CIs) of C max and AUC 0–∞ were 0.87 (0.67–1.15) and 1.05 (0.85–1.30). None of the study participants experienced serious adverse events during the study. Implications No clinically significant changes were noted in the pharmacokinetic interactions of pelubiprofen, the major active metabolite of pelubiprofen (trans-alcohol pelubiprofen), and eperisone hydrochloride between monotherapy and combination therapy with 45-mg sustained-release pelubiprofen and 75-mg sustained-release eperisone hydrochloride.

Previously, we reported that (E)-8-acetoxy-2-[2-(3,4-diacetoxyphenyl)ethenyl]-quinazoline (8-ADEQ), a synthetic analogue of resveratrol had anti-inflammatory and G2/M cell cycle arrest activities, but the underlying molecular mechanism of cytotoxic effects of this compound was not determined. In this study, 8-ADEQ displayed potent cytotoxicity and triggered apoptosis in HL-60 cells as evidenced by DNA fragmentation, DNA ladder formation, and the externalization of Annexin V-targeted phosphatidylserine residues in HL-60 cells. In addition, 8-ADEQ triggered activation of caspases-8, -9, -6 and -3 and cleavage of their substrates such as poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). Moreover, 8-ADEQ induced loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and release of cytochrome c to the cytosol. Caspase-3 inhibitor (z-DEVD-fmk), caspase-8 inhibitor (z-IETD-fmk), caspase-9 inhibitor (z-LEHD), and broad caspase inhibitor (z-VAD‑fmk) significantly suppressed the 8-ADEQ-induced DNA fragmentation. Interestingly, pretreatment with z-IETD-fmk, a caspase-8 inhibitor, completely abolished 8-ADEQ-induced caspase-3 and -9 activation, and subsequent DNA fragmentation. 8-ADEQ also increased the expression of Fas, Fas-associated death domain (FADD) and FasL, and formation of death-inducing signaling complex (DISC). Further analysis revealed that 8-ADEQ-induced apoptosis was mediated by upregulation of reactive oxidative species (ROS) generation. Taken together, our data indicated that 8-ADEQ-stimulated apoptosis in HL-60 leukemia cells is due to a Fas-mediated caspase-8-dependent pathway via ROS generation, but also, to a lesser extent cytochrome c release and caspase-9 activation.

Based on samples collected from the Korean Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) during an investigation of fishery resources by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) from 2002 to 2010, alongside some supplemental material, six species of the genus Plesionika are identified: P. izumiae Omori, 1971, P. ortmanni Doflein, 1902, P. grandis Doflein, 1902, P. lophotes Chace, 1985, P. narval (Fabricius, 1787), and P. orientalis Chace, 1985. Of these, the last four species are new to Korean marine fauna. The distributional range of P. narval extends to the East China Sea off Jeju Island. Excluding P. izumiae and P. ortmanni, the other four species are relatively rare in the seas around Korea. They are described and illustrated with color photographs. A key to the Korean species of Plesionika is also presented.

Scartelaos gigas is an amphibious mudskipper species that inhabits mud flats in Korea, China, and Taiwan. This fish is at risk of extinction because of its very restricted habitat and overexploitation. Information about this fish’s reproductive characteristics is needed for species conservation. The sexual maturity and early life history of S. gigas were investigated through histological methods and direct observation of eggs in the wild, respectively. In total, 560 individuals of S. gigas were collected with the aid of fishermen from March 2003 to October 2003 at Jung-do Island, southwest Korea. Through microscopic observations of gonadal development, it was determined that S. gigas of both sexes were immature in April, but began to reach maturity in May, and were then fully mature by June, which was maintained until July. In August, some female fish developed early oocytes, but by September oocytes were observed to have degenerated and had been absorbed. Spawned eggs were elliptical and had an average size of 1.37 mm (long axis) by 0.69 mm (short axis). The newly hatched larvae (3.03 mm total length, TL) had an open mouth and anus, two melanophores near the anus, and one large melanophore between the 18th and 19th myomeres. The larvae (3.18 mm TL) showed absorption of the yolk and oil globule within 5 days after hatching and became prelarvae. This species should be considered vulnerable or conservation-dependent, and thus parental fish need to be protected from fishermen during the main spawning season (June).

The population of small yellow croaker, Larimichthys polyactis, in the Yellow and East China Seas has decreased significantly since the mid 1970s. Several management measures have been introduced to conserve it, but population size remains low. To rebuild this population, it is now necessary to consider more effective management methods based on the stock assessment. To determine long-term population changes, fishery and biological data collected over 34 years (1969-2002) were analysed. Yearly fish length compositions were analysed for the time periods 1968 through 1970, 1978 through 1982, and 1993 through 2002; and catch data was available from 1969 to 2002. Annual population sizes were calculated based on length composition, the relationship between total length and body weight, and total landings. Analyses showed that since the 1970s, average size of harvested fish decreased; the proportion of less mature fish (smaller than the 50% maturity length, 19cm) in catches has increased and the estimated biomass has decreased significantly. Consequently, the main management recommendation is that juvenile fish need to be better protected to allow the rebuilding of resources to a more sustainable population level. This will require fish size limit, permissible mesh size, and closed area and season regulations.

The indirect target strength (TS) estimation method which uses the Kirchhoff ray mode model (KRM model) was discussed to apply for a biomass estimation in the water of mixed species. TS of 25 live scorpion fishes for 120kHz were measured by a tethered method and of others dominant 5 species in the marine ranching ground of Jeju coastal water including a scorpion fish were also estimated by KRM model. The measurement TS of scorpion fish well agreed with the theoretical values and the standard formula of scorpion fish was estimated as $TS_{120kHz}

To assess population structure and genetic diversity among the Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus), we investigated mtDNA COI gene sequences of 7 populations. Samples were obtained from Sokcho, Wolsung, Geojedo, Yeosu, Geomundo and Westsouth in 2008 and 2009 (n=28). The sequence analysis of 28 individual samples showed 8 haplotypes, ranging in sequence divergence by pairwise comparisons from 0.2 to 2.2% (1 bp 11 bp). The Ga1 haplotype was found in Wolsung, Geojedo, Yeosu, Geomundo and Westsouth, and was regarded as the main haplotype of Korean Pacific cod. Ga2, Ga3, Ga6 and Ga7 haplotypes were found only in Sokcho. In the PHYLIP analysis, 8 haplotypes formed two independent groups: cladeA consisted of Ga2, Ga3, Ga6 and Ga7 haplotypes, whereas cladeB contained Ga1, Ga4, Ga5 and Ga8 haplotypes. The genetic relationship between the two groups was weakly supported by bootstrap analysis ( m =infinite) and a very low level of geographic distance (F ST =-0.0123-(-0.0423)) were observed. CD47 (integrin-associated protein), a multi-spanning transmembrane protein expressed in all cells including red blood cells (RBCs) and leukocytes, interacts with signal regulatory protein α (SIRPα) on macrophages and thereby inhibits phagocytosis of RBCs. Recently, we generated a novel C57BL/6J CD47 knockout (CD47-/- hereafter) mouse line by employing a CRISPR/Cas9 system at Center for Mouse Models of Human Disease, and here report their hematological phenotypes. On monitoring their birth and development, CD47-/- mice were born viable with a natural male-to-female sex ratio and normally developed from birth through puberty to adulthood without noticeable changes in growth, food/water intake compared to their age and sex-matched wild-type littermates up to 26 weeks. Hematological analysis revealed a mild but significant reduction of RBC counts and hemoglobin in 16 week-old male CD47-/- mice which were aggravated at the age of 26 weeks with increased reticulocyte counts and mean corpuscular volume (MCV), suggesting hemolytic anemia. Interestingly, anemia in female CD47-/- mice became evident at 26 weeks, but splenomegaly was identified in both genders of CD47-/- mice from the age of 16 weeks, consistent with development of hemolytic anemia. Additionally, helper and cytotoxic T cell populations were considerably reduced in the spleen, but not in thymus, of CD47-/- mice, suggesting a crucial role of CD47 in proliferation of T cells. Collectively, these findings indicate that our CD47-/- mice have progressive hemolytic anemia and splenic depletion of mature T cell populations and therefore may be useful as an in vivo model to study the function of CD47.

Acoustic technologies are commonly used to estimate biomass and distribution of fisheries resources in coastal areas and the open ocean. The pelagic species of Engraulis japonica, Scomber japonicus and Sardinops melanosticta spawn migrate to the southern part of the Sea of Korea and capture of these three species comprise 50% of the total abundance in Korean waters. Since 1970, anchovy landings have increased to 0.2 million tons in 1990, 0.27 million tons in 2001, and 0.25 million tons in 2003. Acoustic surveys were conducted on 24-26, May and 20-21, June 2005 around the Tongyeong, Geojae, and Namhae anchovy fishing ground using a dual beam echo sounder (DT-5000, 200 kHz Biosonics). Using this approach, information was obtained on the distribution (depth and position) of zooplankton, and adult and juvenile anchovy. We calculated and compared anchovy biomass using simple summation and geostatistic methods to assess the advantages and constraints of the two techniques.

We determined a portion of mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene sequences (416 bp) to investigate the genetic structure of the octopus (Octopus minor Ssaki) population in Korea and China. Samples were obtained from Korea (Yeosu, Namhae, Jindo, Muan, Geomundo and Seosan) and China (Sandong) during the period of August 2006 to September 2007. Sequence analyses of 28 individual specimens collected from 7 localities revealed 11 haplotypes, ranging in a sequence divergence of 0.2% - 1.2%. Phylogenetic analyses using PHYLIP and networks subdivided the octopus into two clades (termed clade A and B) and the nucleotide divergence between them was 0.4%. This haplotype subdivision was in accordance with geographic separation: one at Yeosu, Namhae, Muan and Jindo, and the other at Seosan, Geomundo and Sandong. On the basis of hierarchial genetic analysis, genetic distance between localities in Korea and China were also found, but a significant population differentiation was not shown in this study (p＞0.05). Consequently, most of the octopus populations in Korea had considerable distribution due to the mitochondrial gene flow that resulted in a formation of a genetically homogenous structure, whereas some of the Korean and Chinese populations had different genetic structures. Gene flow among populations may be restricted due to impassable geographic barriers that promote genetic differentiation.

The characteristics of the population genetic structure of the Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus Temminck & Schlegel) were collected from the West, South and East Seas of Korea in August, 2006 and were compared using six microsatellite DNA loci. In the West Sea population, the range of allele number against 72 individuals was from 19 to 41, the average allele number was 28.5. In EJ9, the allele number had the highest value of 41, this was 1.4 times higher than the average number of allele. The average allele number of the South Sea population was 24.5 that was less than that of West Sea population. In EJ2, EJ9 and EJ27.1 loci, the allele number was higher than average allele number in the South Sea population. In the East Sea population, the average allele number was estimated at 25.0 that most of loci except for EJ35 were higher than average allele number. Allele frequency in the West, South and East Sea populations was below 0.24. The value of observed heterozosity for six loci was approximately 0.5 higher than that of expected heterozosity (p＞0.05), but three populations similar values to these heterozosity. Although the genetic diversity was higher value of above 0.9, three populations had a similar value. Genetic differentiation and distance combined estimate of the six loci were 0.258 and 0.019 (p＞0.05), respectively, but showed no significant distance between three populations. These results suggested that it is responsible for no differentiated gene pool between three populations.

Information was obtained on the distributions of adult and juvenile anchovy (depth and position). We calculated and compared anchovy biomass using simple summation. In this study, all backscatter was attributed to anchovy. We assumed that the average target strength of anchovy was -70 dB and the average body weight was 3 g in May and June 2005, and that the target strength of anchovy was -65 dB and the average body weight was 5 g for pelagic individuals in July 2006. The anchovy biomass in May 2005 was estimated to be 0.147 million tons using the traditional method, while using the summation method, the estimated anchovy biomass was 0.062 million tons in June 2005, 0.21 million tons in June 2006, and in 0.43 million tons in July 2006.

Age and growth of the mudskipper, Scartelaos gigas were investigated using the second actinost bone of the pectoral girdle, based on an analysis of 560 individuals collected from the mud flats in south west Korea. Specimens were collected semimonthly from March to September of 2003. Actinost and ring radii of each ring group showed a direct one‐to‐one relationship, with ring radius increasing in tandem with actinost radius. Monthly change in the marginal indices showed that ring formation occurred between May and July (mainly June), being supported by the monthly change in the gonadosomatic (highest in June) and hepatosomatic (lowest in July) indices. Because the species has not been found since November, when air temperature was less than about 10°C, it is thought to enter to hibernation. Therefore, it was suggested that the two new actinost rings may appear a year: one during the spawning season (May‐July) and another during hibernation (since November). Fishes were caught by a bottom trawl in the Yeo-ja bay of Korea by every three month(March, June, September and December) and seasonal variation of abundance and species composition were studied in 2005. The catches were 1,187kg and were composed of 115 species with 20 hauls by 5 stations. The dominant species caught were Charybdis bimcaulata, Crangon hakodatei, Parapenaeus fissurus, Oratosguilla oratoria, and Thryssa purava. One hundred fifty species were identified as fish(38%), crustacea(20%), mollusca(4%) and others(38%) which including of Asterias amurensis. The amount of species was high in June and September and low in March and December. The diversity index(H`) was about 1.2－2.5 and station similarity of fishes caught among the community was 0.009－0.230.

We investigated the temperature and salinity effects on the major fish species in the wintering grounds based on trawl surveys and oceanographic observations in the southwestern waters of Korea during March-early April in 2002-2003. The influence area of warm Kuroshio water was limited to the southwestern area of Korea in 2003 with a range of 7.7-16.3°C, 32.54-34.70 of salinity, wider than that of 2002. The number of fish species and density of major fish species in 2003 were higher than in 2002. Geographical estimation showed high proportions of species number and catches in the areas around Jeju Islands, southwestern waters and the southeastern coast of Korea. Five species; silver pomfret (Pampus echinogaster), hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus), anchovy (Engraulis japonicus), small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) and yellow goosefish (Lophius litulon) were most abundant, composing above 60% of the total catch in 2002 and 2003. More than 50% of catch in the major fish species were mostly distributed in the range of 9.5-11.0°C of temperature and 33.1-33.9 of salinity. Non-parametric estimation for the major species showed the 1st mode around 10°C and the 2nd mode at 8-9°C in 2002 and 11-14°C in 2003. A m o n g major fish species, hairtail was principally composed of juveniles, and larger individuals were caught in southeastern waters. These results are considered to be helpful for the areabased fishery management strategy for the wintering grounds of the Yellow Sea and coastal waters of Korea.
