Background: Larger volumes of accidental air infused during medical care may end up as emboli while microbubbles of air are supposed to be absorbed and cause no harm. The aim of this autopsy study was to investigate if microbubbles of air accidently entering the bloodline may be detected as microemboli (ME) in tissue such as lungs, brain and heart. If so, do differences in prevalence exist between haemodialysis (HD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients. Methods: Included were data from 44 patients treated by medical healthcare before death. Twenty-five cases had been treated with chronic HD and 19 cases died from ALS. Since air in the bloodline activates coagulation, ME could appear. To discriminate between microbubbles caused by artificial contamination during autopsy versus microbubbles deposited in vivo, tissues were stained with a polyclonal fluorescent antibody against fibrinogen, fibrin and fragments E and D. Fluorescence staining was used to visualize ME counted within 25 microscopic fields (600x) of a tissue preparation. One tissue preparation was used if available from the lung, heart and frontal lobe of the brain and in five cases also the cerebellum. Results: Microbubbles can be verified at autopsy as ME in the lung, heart and brain in tissue from patients exposed to more extensive medical care. There were significantly more ME in the lungs versus the heart or brain. Women had fewer ME than men. The HD group had a higher median of ME per section than the ALS group (lung: 6 versus 3, P = .007; heart: 2.5 versus 1, P = .013; brain: 7.5 versus 2, P = .001) and had more sections with ME findings than the ALS group (P = .002). A correlation existed between the time on HD (months) and ME in the lungs. Conclusions: More ME were present in HD patients compared with those who suffered from ALS. Minimizing air contamination from syringes, infusions and bloodlines will decrease ME and subsequent tissue injury. Lay Summary Larger volumes of accidental air

grasp is a software package in Fortran 95, adapted to run in parallel under MPI, for research in atomic physics. The basic premise is that, given a wave function, any observed atomic property can be computed. Thus, the first step is always to determine a wave function. Different properties challenge the accuracy of the wave function in different ways. This software is distributed under the MIT Licence.

Computational atomic physics continues to play a crucial role in both increasing the understanding of fundamental physics (e.g., quantum electrodynamics and correlation) and producing atomic data for interpreting observations from large-scale research facilities ranging from fusion reactors to high-power laser systems, space-based telescopes and isotope separators. A number of different computational methods, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, is available to meet these tasks. Here, we review the relativistic multiconfiguration method as it applies to the General Relativistic Atomic Structure Package [grasp2018, C. Froese Fischer, G. Gaigalas, P. Jonsson, J. Bieron, Comput. Phys. Commun. (2018). DOI: 10.1016/j.cpc.2018.10.032]. To illustrate the capacity of the package, examples of calculations of relevance for nuclear physics and astrophysics are presented.

This article presents a pilot study of a 1-h workplace educational intervention implemented among ten construction workers who were highly exposed to hand–arm vibration. The intervention combined risk communication and normative expert advice intended to reinforce preventive behaviour related to vibration, noise, and biomechanical loads. Data for this study comprised intervention notes and interview data from interventionists, and pre- and post-intervention interview data from participating workers. The results suggested that the intervention was sensitive to disturbances and should be directed only to motivated workers possessing sufficient self-efficacy, and only in circumstances in which exposure may be controlled on the local workplace level and by locally implemented measures. Unless these conditions are present, the studied intervention may fail to influence preventive behaviour, and may instead cause cognitive dissonance and frustration among participants and interventionists.

Nuclear charge radii of ⁶²⁻⁸⁰Zn have been determined using collinear laser spectroscopy of bunched ion beams at CERN-ISOLDE. The subtle variations of observed charge radii, both within one isotope and along the full range of neutron numbers, are found to be well described in terms of the proton excitations across the Z = 28 shell gap, as predicted by large-scale shell model calculations. It comprehensively explains the changes in isomer-to-ground state mean square charge radii of ⁶⁹⁻⁷⁹Zn, the inversion of the odd-even staggering around N = 40 and the odd-even staggering systematics of the Zn charge radii. With two protons above Z = 28, the observed charge radii of the Zn isotopic chain show a cumulative effect of different aspects of nuclear structure including single particle structure, shell closure, correlations and deformations near the proposed doubly magic nuclei, ⁶⁸Ni and ⁷⁸Ni.
