We study twisted Courant sigma models, a class of topological field theories arising from the coupling of 3D 0-/2-form BF theory and Chern-Simons theory and containing a 4-form Wess-Zumino term. They are examples of theories featuring a nonlinearly open gauge algebra, where products of field equations appear in the commutator of gauge transformations, and they are reducible gauge systems. We determine the solution to the master equation using a technique, the BRST power finesse, that combines aspects of the AKSZ construction (which applies to the untwisted model) and the general BV-BRST formalism. This allows for a geometric interpretation of the BV coefficients in the interaction terms of the master action in terms of an induced generalised connection on a 4-form twisted (pre-)Courant algebroid, its Gualtieri torsion and the basic curvature tensor. It also produces a frame independent formulation of the model. We study connections on higher structures such as Lie and Courant algebroids and their description as differential graded manifolds and explore the role of their basic curvature tensor and of the Atiyah cocycle in topological sigma models and higher gauge theories. The basic curvature of a connection on a Lie algebroid is a measure for the compatibility of the connection with the Lie bracket and it appears in the BV operator of topological sigma models in 2D. Here we define a basic curvature tensor for connections on Courant algebroids and we show that in the description of a Courant algebroid as a QP manifold it appears naturally as part of the homological vector field together with the Gualtieri torsion of a generalised connection. The Atiyah cocycle of a connection on a differential graded manifold is a measure of the compatibility of the connection with the homological vector field. We argue that in the graded-geometric description of higher gauge theories, the structure of gauge transformations is governed by a Kapranov L$_{\infty}[1]$ algebra, whose binary bracket is given by the Atiyah cocycle. Homotopy Lie algebras are a generalization of differential graded Lie algebras encoding both the kinematics and dynamics of a given field theory. Focusing on kinematics, we show that these algebras provide a natural framework for the description of generalized gauge symmetries using two specific examples. The first example deals with the non-commutative gauge symmetry obtained using Drinfel'd twist of the symmetry Hopf algebra. The homotopy Lie algebra compatible with the twisted gauge symmetry turns out to be the recently proposed braided L$_\infty$-algebra. In the second example we focus on the generalized gauge symmetry of the double field theory. We present the construction of the classical Batalin-Vilkovisky action for topological Dirac sigma models. The latter are two-dimensional topological field theories that simultaneously generalise the completely gauged Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model and the Poisson sigma model. Their underlying structure is that of Dirac manifolds associated to maximal isotropic and integrable subbundles of an exact Courant algebroid twisted by a 3-form. In contrast to the Poisson sigma model, the AKSZ construction is not applicable for the general Dirac sigma model. We therefore follow a direct approach for determining a suitable BV extension of the classical action functional with ghosts and antifields satisfying the classical master equation. We show that an $L_\infty$-algebra can be extended to a graded Hopf algebra with a codifferential. Then we twist this extended $L_\infty$-algebra with a Drinfel'd twist, simultaneously twisting its modules. Taking the $L_\infty$-algebra as its own (Hopf) module, we obtain the recently proposed braided $L_\infty$-algebra. A DFT algebroid is a special case of the metric (or Vaisman) algebroid, shown to be relevant in understanding the symmetries of double field theory. In particular, a DFT algebroid is a structure defined on a vector bundle over doubled spacetime equipped with the C-bracket of double field theory. In this paper we give the definition of a DFT algebroid as a curved $L_\infty$-algebra and show how implementation of the strong constraint of double field theory can be formulated as an $L_\infty$-algebra morphism. Membrane sigma-models have been used for the systematic description of closed strings in non-geometric flux backgrounds. In particular, the conditions for gauge invariance of the corresponding action functionals were related to the Bianchi identities for the fluxes. In this contribution we demonstrate how to express these Bianchi identities in terms of homotopy relations of the underlying $L_\infty$-algebra for the case of the Courant sigma-model. The Courant sigma model is a 3-dimensional topological sigma model of AKSZ type which has been used for the systematic description of closed strings in non-geometric flux backgrounds. In particular, the expression for the fluxes and their Bianchi identities coincide with the local form of the axioms of a Courant algebroid. On the other hand, the axioms of a Courant algebroid also coincide with the conditions for gauge invariance of the Courant sigma model. In this paper we embed this interplay between background fluxes of closed strings, gauge (or more precisely BRST) symmetries of the Courant sigma model and axioms of a Courant algebroid into an $L_\infty$-algebra structure. We show how the complete BV-BRST formulation of the Courant sigma model is described in terms of $L_\infty$-algebras. Courant sigma-models encode the geometric and non-geometric fluxes of compactified closed string theory as generalized Wess-Zumino terms and exhibit their relation to Courant algebroids. In recent work, we proposed a doubled membrane sigma-model that establishes the corresponding connection to double field theory and its algebroid structure. The strategy is to consider a "large" Courant sigma-model over a doubled target spacetime and identify a suitable projection that leads to a sigma-model for doubled fields. In this note, we provide further details for this construction. Starting from the BRST symmetry of the BV action that satisfies the classical master equation, we consistently project the BRST transformations of the superfields of the "large" Courant sigma-model to obtain the gauge transformations of the doubled membrane sigma-model. By doubling the target space of a canonical Courant algebroid and subsequently projecting down to a specific subbundle, we identify the data of double field theory (DFT) and hence define its algebroid structure. We specify the properties of the DFT algebroid. We show that one of the Courant algebroid properties plays the role of the strong constraint in the context of DFT. Starting from a higher Courant bracket associated to exceptional generalized geometry, we provide a systematic derivation of all types of fluxes and their Bianchi identities for four-dimensional compactifications of M-theory. We show that these fluxes may be understood as generalized Wess-Zumino terms in certain topological threebrane sigma-models of AKSZ-type, which relates them to the higher structure of a Lie algebroid up to homotopy. The Einstein-Hilbert action in three dimensions and the transformation rules for the dreibein and spin connection can be naturally described in terms of gauge theory. In this spirit, we use covariant coordinates in noncommutative gauge theory in order to describe 3D gravity in the framework of noncommutative geometry. We consider 3D noncommutative spaces based on SU(2) and SU(1,1), as foliations of fuzzy 2-spheres and fuzzy 2-hyperboloids respectively. Then we construct a U(2)$\times$ U(2) and a GL(2,$\mathbb{C}$) gauge theory on them, identifying the corresponding noncommutative vielbein and spin connection. We investigate geometric aspects of double field theory (DFT) and its formulation as a doubled membrane sigma-model. Starting from the standard Courant algebroid over the phase space of an open membrane, we determine a splitting and a projection to a subbundle that sends the Courant algebroid operations to the corresponding operations in DFT. This describes precisely how the geometric structure of DFT lies in between two Courant algebroids and is reconciled with generalized geometry. We construct the membrane sigma-model that corresponds to DFT, and demonstrate how the standard T-duality orbit of geometric and non-geometric flux backgrounds is captured by its action functional in a unified way. This also clarifies the appearence of noncommutative and nonassociative deformations of geometry in non-geometric closed string theory. Gauge invariance of the DFT membrane sigma-model is compatible with the flux formulation of DFT and its strong constraint, whose geometric origin is explained. Our approach leads to a new generalization of a Courant algebroid, that we call a DFT algebroid and relate to other known generalizations, such as pre-Courant algebroids and symplectic nearly Lie 2-algebroids. One of the central concepts in modern theoretical physics, gauge symmetry, is typically realised by lifting a finite-dimensional global symmetry group of a given functional to an infinite-dimensional local one by extending the functional to include gauge fields. In this contribution we review the construction of gauged actions for two-dimensional sigma models, considering a more general notion to be gauged, namely that of a (possibly singular) foliation. In particular, the original action does not need to have any global symmetry for this purpose. Moreover, reformulating the ungauged theory by means of auxiliary 1-form fields taking values in the generalised tangent bundle over the target, all possible such gauge theories result from restriction of these fields to take values in (possibly small) Dirac structures. This turns all the remaining 1-form fields into gauge fields and leads to the presence of a local symmetry. We study the propagation of bosonic strings in singular target space-times. For describing this, we assume this target space to be the quotient of a smooth manifold $M$ by a singular foliation ${\cal F}$ on it. Using the technical tool of a gauge theory, we propose a smooth functional for this scenario, such that the propagation is assured to lie in the singular target on-shell, i.e. only after taking into account the gauge invariant content of the theory. One of the main new aspects of our approach is that we do not limit ${\cal F}$ to be generated by a group action. We will show that, whenever it exists, the above gauging is effectuated by a single geometrical and universal gauge theory, whose target space is the generalized tangent bundle $TM\oplus T^*M$., Comment: 49 pages, 4 figures

In this paper we study the general conditions that have to be met for a gauged extension of a two-dimensional bosonic sigma-model to exist. In an inversion of the usual approach of identifying a global symmetry and then promoting it to a local one, we focus directly on the gauge symmetries of the theory. This allows for action functionals which are gauge invariant for rather general background fields in the sense that their invariance conditions are milder than the usual case. In particular, the vector fields that control the gauging need not be Killing. The relaxation of isometry for the background fields is controlled by two connections on a Lie algebroid L in which the gauge fields take values, in a generalization of the common Lie-algebraic picture. Here we show that these connections can always be determined when L is a Dirac structure in the H-twisted Courant algebroid. Target space duality is one of the most profound properties of string theory. However it customarily requires that the background fields satisfy certain invariance conditions in order to perform it consistently; for instance the vector fields along the directions that T-duality is performed have to generate isometries. In the present paper we examine in detail the possibility to perform T-duality along non-isometric directions. In particular, based on a recent work of Kotov and Strobl, we study gauged 2D sigma models where gauge invariance for an extended set of gauge transformations imposes weaker constraints than in the standard case, notably the corresponding vector fields are not Killing. This formulation enables us to follow a procedure analogous to the derivation of the Buscher rules and obtain two dual models, by integrating out once the Lagrange multipliers and once the gauge fields. The existence of genuinely non-geometric backgrounds, i.e. ones without geometric dual, is an important question in string theory. In this paper we examine this question from a sigma model perspective. First we construct a particular class of Courant algebroids as protobialgebroids with all types of geometric and non-geometric fluxes. For such structures we apply the mathematical result that any Courant algebroid gives rise to a 3D topological sigma model of the AKSZ type and we discuss the corresponding 2D field theories. It is found that these models are always geometric, even when both 2-form and 2-vector fields are neither vanishing nor inverse of one another. Taking a further step, we suggest an extended class of 3D sigma models, whose world volume is embedded in phase space, which allow for genuinely non-geometric backgrounds. We consider a rather general type of matrix model, where the matrix M represents a Hamiltonian of the interaction of a bosonic system with a single fermion. The fluctuations of the matrix are partly given by some fundamental randomness and partly dynamically, even quantum mechanically. We then study the homolumo-gap effect, which means that we study how the level density for the single-fermion Hamiltonian matrix M gets attenuated near the Fermi surface. In the case of the quenched randomness (the fundamental one) dominating the quantum mechanical one we show that in the first approximation the homolumo gap is characterized by the absence of single-fermion levels between two steep gap boundaries. The filled and empty level densities are in this first approximation just pushed, each to its side. In the next approximation these steep drops in the spectral density are smeared out to have an error-function shape. We review the application of twist deformation formalism and the construction of noncommutative gauge theory on $\kappa$-Minkowski space-time. We compare two different types of twists: the Abelian and the Jordanian one. In each case we provide the twisted differential calculus and consider ${U}(1)$ gauge theory. Different methods of obtaining a gauge invariant action and related problems are thoroughly discussed.

We study some aspects of the generalized geometry of nilmanifolds and examine to which extent different types of fluxes can coexist on them. Nilmanifolds constitute a class of homogeneous spaces which are interesting in string compactifications with fluxes since they carry geometric flux by construction. They are generalized Calabi-Yau spaces and therefore simple examples of generalized geometry at work. We identify and classify Dirac structures on nilmanifolds, which are maximally isotropic subbundles closed under the Courant bracket. In the presence of non-vanishing fluxes, these structures are twisted and closed under appropriate extensions of the Courant bracket. Twisted Dirac structures on a nilmanifold may carry multiple coexistent fluxes of any type. We also show how dual Dirac structures combine to Courant algebroids and work out an explicit example where all types of generalized fluxes coexist. In the recent years a lot of attention is focused on unconventional string compactifications. A variety of different but related frameworks was developed in order to address issues such as duality invariance, non-geometry and non-commutativity in string theory. We explore the origins of non-geometric fluxes within the context of M theory described as a matrix model. Building upon compactifications of Matrix theory on non-commutative tori and twisted tori, we formulate the conditions which describe compactifications with non-geometric fluxes. These turn out to be related to certain deformations of tori with non-commutative and non-associative structures on their phase space. Quantization of flux appears as a natural consequence of the framework and leads to the resolution of non-associativity at the level of the unitary operators. The quantum-mechanical nature of the model bestows an important role on the phase space. In particular, the geometric and non-geometric fluxes exchange their properties when going from position space to momentum space thus providing a duality among the two. Moreover, the operations which connect solutions with different fluxes are described and their relation to T-duality is discussed. We study compactifications of Matrix theory on twisted tori and non-commutative versions of them. As a first step, we review the construction of multidimensional twisted tori realized as nilmanifolds based on certain nilpotent Lie algebras. Subsequently, matrix compactifications on tori are revisited and the previously known results are supplemented with a background of a non-commutative torus with non-constant non-commutativity and an underlying non-associative structure on its phase space. Next we turn our attention to 3- and 6-dimensional twisted tori and we describe consistent backgrounds of Matrix theory on them by stating and solving the conditions which describe the corresponding compactification. Both commutative and non-commutative solutions are found in all cases. Kappa-Minkowski space-time is an example of noncommutative space-time with potentially interesting phenomenology. However, the construction of field theories on this space is plagued with ambiguities. We propose to resolve certain ambiguities by clarifying the geometrical picture of gauge transformations on the kappa-Minkowski space-time in the twist approach. We construct the action for the noncommutative U(1) gauge fields in a geometric way, as an integral of a maximal form. Kappa-Minkowski space-time is an example of noncommutative space-time with potentially interesting phenomenological consequences. However, the construction of field theories on this space, although operationally well-defined, is plagued with ambiguities. A part of ambiguities can be resolved by clarifying the geometrical picture of gauge transformations on the kappa-Minkowski space-time. To this end we use the twist approach to construct the noncommutative U(1) gauge theory coupled to fermions. However, in this approach we cannot maintain the kappa-Poincar\'e symmetry; the corresponding symmetry of the twisted kappa-Minkowski space is the twisted igl(1,3) symmetry. We construct an action for the gauge and matter fields in a geometric way, as an integral of a maximal form. We present a method for solving BPS equations obtained in the collective-field approach to matrix models. The method enables us to find BPS solutions and quantum excitations around these solutions in the one-matrix model, and in general for the Calogero model. These semiclassical solutions correspond to giant gravitons described by matrix models obtained in the framework of AdS/CFT correspondence. The two-field model, associated with two types of giant gravitons, is investigated. In this duality-based matrix model we find the finite form of the $n$-soliton solution. This study of U(1) gauge field theory on the kappa-deformed Minkowski spacetime extends previous work on gauge field theories on this type of noncommutative spacetime. A general formalism is developed that allows the construction of field theory on quantum spaces which are deformations of ordinary spacetime. We present a unified approach to representations of quantum mechanics on noncommutative spaces with general constant commutators of phase-space variables. We find two phases and duality relations among them in arbitrary dimensions. Conditions for physical equivalence of different representations of a given system are analysed. Symmetries and classification of phase spaces are discussed. Specially, the dynamical symmetry of a physical system is investigated. We analyze the algebra of observables and the physical Fock space of the finite Chern-Simons matrix model. We observe that the minimal algebra of observables acting on that Fock space is identical to that of the Calogero model. Our main result is the identification of the states in the l-th tower of the Chern-Simons matrix model Fock space and the states of the Calogero model with the interaction parameter nu=l+1. We study an N-body Calogero model in the S_N-symmetric subspace of the positive definite Fock space. We study the dynamical symmetry algebra of the N-body Calogero model describing the structure of degenerate levels and demonstrate that the algebra is intrisically polynomial. We discuss some general properties of an algebra of S_N-symmetric operators acting on the S_N-symmetric subspace of the Fock space for any statistical parameter \nu. We study a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate under rotation in the limit of weak, translational and rotational invariant two-particle interactions. We use the perturbation-theory approach (the large-N expansion) to calculate the ground-state energy and the excitation spectrum in the asymptotic limit where the total number of particles N goes to infinity while keeping the total angular momentum L finite. Calculating the probabilities of different configurations of angular momentum in the exact eigenstates gives us a clear view of the physical content of excitations. We consider a large-N Chern-Simons theory for the attractive bosonic matter (Jackiw-Pi model) in the Hamiltonian collective-field approach based on the 1/N expansion. We show that the dynamics of low-lying density excitations around the ground-state vortex configuration is equivalent to that of the Sutherland model. The relationship between the Chern-Simons coupling constant lambda and the Calogero-Sutherland statistical parameter lambda_s signalizes some sort of statistical transmutation accompanying the dimensional reduction of the initial problem., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures
