Abstract Properly handling animals and understanding their habits are crucial to establish a society where humans and animals coexist. Thus, identifying individual animals, including their possessions, and adequately managing each animal is necessary. Although several conventional identification methods exist, such as the use of ear punch, tattoos, and radio frequency (RF) chips, they require several processes and external apparatus. In this study, we proposed a new biotagging method using a microneedle array for animal identification. Our approach uses dissolvable microneedle arrays as a single patch to deliver dyes directly into the skin layer. Additionally, we developed a new fabrication method for customised female moulds to realise microneedle array patches (MAPs) with patterns of different characters and number. The characteristics and feasibility of the patterned MAPs were confirmed through basic evaluations and animal experiments. Moreover, we confirmed that patterns formed from biotagging using the developed patterned MAPs lasted over one month with clear readability. Finally, we confirmed that our patterned MAPs successfully realised biotagging on rat skin with the designated patterns including characters and number patterns. The proposed method is expected to enable minimally invasive tagging without external equipment or complex processes. In addition, the developed method could be used to embed various tags into the skin of animals and humans in the future.

We report the first observation of the nearby giant radio galaxy NGC 315 using a global very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) array consisting of 22 radio antennas located across five continents, including high-sensitivity stations, at 22 GHz. Utilizing the extensive u v -coverage provided by the array, coupled with the application of a recently developed superresolution imaging technique based on the regularized maximum-likelihood method, we were able to transversely resolve the NGC 315 jet at parsec scales for the first time. Previously known for its central ridge-brightened morphology at similar scales in former VLBI studies, the jet now clearly exhibits a limb-brightened structure. This finding suggests an inherent limb brightening that was not observable before due to limited angular resolution. Considering that the jet is viewed at an angle of ∼50°, the observed limb brightening is challenging to reconcile with the magnetohydrodynamic models and simulations, which predict that the Doppler-boosted jet edges should dominate over the nonboosted central layer. The conventional jet model that proposes a fast spine and a slow sheath with uniform transverse emissivity may pertain to our observations. However, in this model, the relativistic spine would need to travel at speeds of Γ ≳ 6.0–12.9 along the deprojected jet distance of (2.3–10.8) × 10 ^3 gravitational radii from the black hole. We propose an alternative scenario that suggests higher emissivity at the jet boundary layer, resulting from more efficient particle acceleration or mass loading onto the jet edges, and consider prospects for future observations with even higher angular resolution.

In a companion paper, we present the first spatially resolved polarized image of Sagittarius A* on event horizon scales, captured using the Event Horizon Telescope, a global very long baseline interferometric array operating at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. Here we interpret this image using both simple analytic models and numerical general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations. The large spatially resolved linear polarization fraction (24%–28%, peaking at ∼40%) is the most stringent constraint on parameter space, disfavoring models that are too Faraday depolarized. Similar to our studies of M87*, polarimetric constraints reinforce a preference for GRMHD models with dynamically important magnetic fields. Although the spiral morphology of the polarization pattern is known to constrain the spin and inclination angle, the time-variable rotation measure (RM) of Sgr A* (equivalent to ≈46° ± 12° rotation at 228 GHz) limits its present utility as a constraint. If we attribute the RM to internal Faraday rotation, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be counterclockwise, contrary to inferences based on historical polarized flares, and no model satisfies all polarimetric and total intensity constraints. On the other hand, if we attribute the mean RM to an external Faraday screen, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be clockwise, and one model passes all applied total intensity and polarimetric constraints: a model with strong magnetic fields, a spin parameter of 0.94, and an inclination of 150°. We discuss how future 345 GHz and dynamical imaging will mitigate our present uncertainties and provide additional constraints on the black hole and its accretion flow.

The Event Horizon Telescope observed the horizon-scale synchrotron emission region around the Galactic center supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), in 2017. These observations revealed a bright, thick ring morphology with a diameter of 51.8 ± 2.3 μ as and modest azimuthal brightness asymmetry, consistent with the expected appearance of a black hole with mass M ≈ 4 × 10 ^6 M _⊙ . From these observations, we present the first resolved linear and circular polarimetric images of Sgr A*. The linear polarization images demonstrate that the emission ring is highly polarized, exhibiting a prominent spiral electric vector polarization angle pattern with a peak fractional polarization of ∼40% in the western portion of the ring. The circular polarization images feature a modestly (∼5%–10%) polarized dipole structure along the emission ring, with negative circular polarization in the western region and positive circular polarization in the eastern region, although our methods exhibit stronger disagreement than for linear polarization. We analyze the data using multiple independent imaging and modeling methods, each of which is validated using a standardized suite of synthetic data sets. While the detailed spatial distribution of the linear polarization along the ring remains uncertain owing to the intrinsic variability of the source, the spiraling polarization structure is robust to methodological choices. The degree and orientation of the linear polarization provide stringent constraints for the black hole and its surrounding magnetic fields, which we discuss in an accompanying publication.

Photothermolysis is the process that converts radiation energy into thermal energy, which results in the destruction of surrounding tissues or cells through thermal diffusion. Laser therapy that is based on photothermolysis has been a widely used treatment for various skin diseases such as skin cancers and port-wine stains. It offers several benefits such as non-invasiveness and selective treatment. However, the use of light, e.g., laser, for safe and effective photothermolysis becomes challenging due to the limited penetration of light into skin tissue as well as the presence of melanin, which absorbs this light. To solve the current issues, we propose an optical microneedle–lens array (OMLA) coated with gold in this work to directly deliver light to targeted skin layers without being absorbed by surrounding tissues as well as melanin, which results in the improvement of the efficiency of photothermal therapy. We developed a novel fabrication method, frame-guided micromolding, to prepare the OMLA by assembling two negative molds with simultaneous alignment. In addition, evaluations of the optical and heat transfer characteristics of the OMLA were performed. We expect our developed OMLA to play a crucial role in realizing more effective laser therapy by allowing the precise delivery of photons to the target area.

We study magnetic field strengths along the jet in NGC 315. First, we estimated the angular velocity of rotation in the jet magnetosphere by comparing the measured velocity profile of NGC 315 with the magnetohydrodynamic jet model proposed by Tomimatsu and Takahashi. Similar to the case of M87, we find that the model can reproduce the logarithmic feature of the velocity profile and suggest a slowly rotating black hole magnetosphere for NGC 315. By substituting the estimated Ω _F into the jet power predicted by the Blandford–Znajek mechanism, we estimate the magnetic field strength near the event horizon of the central black hole as 5 × 10 ^3 G ≲ B _H ≲ 2 × 10 ^4 G. We then estimate magnetic field strengths along the jet by comparing the spectral index distribution obtained from very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations with a synchrotron-emitting jet model. Then we constrain the magnetic field strength at a deprojected distance z from the black hole to be in the range 0.06 G ≲ B ( z ) ≲ 0.9 G for 5.2 × 10 ^3 r _g ≲ z ≲ 4.9 × 10 ^4 r _g , where r _g represents the gravitational radius. By combining the obtained field strengths at the event horizon and the downstream section of the jet, we find that the accretion flow at the jet base is consistent with a magnetically arrested disk. We discuss a comparison of the jet power and the magnetic flux anchored to the event horizon in NGC 315 and M87.

The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870 μ m wavelength (345 GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on intercontinental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in 2018 October. The longest-baseline detections approach 11 G λ , corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19 μ as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870 μ m is comparable to that at 1.3 mm on the relevant integration timescales between 2 and 100 s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870 μ m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time.

We present the kinematics of the parsec-scale jet in 3C 84 from 2003 November to 2022 June observed with the Very Long Baseline Array at 43 GHz. We find that the C3 component, a bright feature at the termination region of the jet component ejected from the core in 2003, has maintained a nearly constant apparent velocity of 0.259 ± 0.003 c over the period covered by observations. We observe the emergence of four new subcomponents from C3, each exhibiting apparent speeds higher than that of C3. Notably, the last two subcomponents exhibit apparent superluminal motion, with the fastest component showing an apparent speed of 1.22 ± 0.14 c . Our analysis suggests that a change in viewing angle alone cannot account for the fast apparent speeds of the new subcomponents, indicating that they are intrinsically faster than C3. We identify jet precession (or reorientation), a jet–cloud collision, and magnetic reconnection as possible physical mechanisms responsible for the ejection of the new subcomponents.

Abstract Infectious diseases are among the leading causes of mortality worldwide. A new coronavirus named severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was identified in Wuhan, China in 2019, and the World Health Organization (WHO) declared its outbreak, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), as a global pandemic in 2020. COVID-19 can spread quickly from person to person. One of the most challenging issues is to identify the infected individuals and prevent potential spread of SARS-CoV-2. Recently, anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody tests using immunochromatographic methods have been used as a complement to current detection methods and have provided information of the approximate course of COVID-19 infection. However, blood sampling causes pain and poses risks of infection at the needle puncture site. In this study, a novel patch sensor integrating porous microneedles and an immunochromatographic assay (PMNIA) was developed for the rapid detection of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgM/IgG in dermal interstitial fluid (ISF), which is a rich source of protein biomarkers, such as antibodies. Biodegradable porous microneedles (MNs) made of polylactic acid were fabricated to extract ISF from human skin by capillary effect. The extracted ISF was vertically transported and flowed into the affixed immunoassay biosensor, where specific antibodies could be detected colorimetrically on-site. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgM/IgG antibodies were simultaneously detected within 3 min in vitro. Moreover, the limit of detection of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgM and IgG concentrations was as low as 3 and 7 ng/mL, respectively. The developed device integrating porous MNs and immunochromatographic biosensors is expected to enable minimally invasive, simple, and rapid anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgM/IgG antibody testing. Furthermore, the compact size of the MN and biosensor-integrated device is advantageous for its widespread use. The proposed device has great potential for rapid screening of various infectious diseases in addition to COVID-19 as an effective complementary method with other diagnostic tests.

Recently, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) for data collection was proposed. Multiple UAVs are more effective than a single UAV in wide WSNs. However, in this scenario, many factors must be considered, such as collision avoidance, the appropriate flight path, and the task time. Therefore, it is important to effectively divide the mission areas of the UAVs. In this paper, we propose an improved k-means clustering algorithm that effectively distributes sensors with various densities and fairly assigns mission areas to UAVs with comparable performance. The proposed algorithm distributes mission areas more effectively than conventional methods using cluster head selection and improved k-means clustering. In addition, a postprocessing procedure for reducing the path length during UAV path planning for each mission area is important. Thus, a waypoint refinement algorithm that considers the sensing ranges of the sensor node and the UAV is proposed to effectively improve the flight path of the UAV. The task completion time is determined by evaluating how the UAV collects data through communication with the cluster head node. The simulation results show that the mission area distribution by the improved k-means clustering algorithm and postprocessing by the waypoint refinement algorithm improve the performance and the UAV flight path during data collection.

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a millimeter very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) array that has imaged the apparent shadows of the supermassive black holes M87* and Sagittarius A*. Polarimetric data from these observations contain a wealth of information on the black hole and accretion flow properties. In this work, we develop polarimetric geometric modeling methods for mm-VLBI data, focusing on approaches that fit data products with differing degrees of invariance to broad classes of calibration errors. We establish a fitting procedure using a polarimetric “m-ring” model to approximate the image structure near a black hole. By fitting this model to synthetic EHT data from general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic models, we show that the linear and circular polarization structure can be successfully approximated with relatively few model parameters. We then fit this model to EHT observations of M87* taken in 2017. In total intensity and linear polarization, the m-ring fits are consistent with previous results from imaging methods. In circular polarization, the m-ring fits indicate the presence of event-horizon-scale circular polarization structure, with a persistent dipolar asymmetry and orientation across several days. The same structure was recovered independently of observing band, used data products, and model assumptions. Despite this broad agreement, imaging methods do not produce similarly consistent results. Our circular polarization results, which imposed additional assumptions on the source structure, should thus be interpreted with some caution. Polarimetric geometric modeling provides a useful and powerful method to constrain the properties of horizon-scale polarized emission, particularly for sparse arrays like the EHT.

Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations have revealed a bright ring of emission around the supermassive black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy. EHT images in linear polarization have further identified a coherent spiral pattern around the black hole, produced from ordered magnetic fields threading the emitting plasma. Here we present the first analysis of circular polarization using EHT data, acquired in 2017, which can potentially provide additional insights into the magnetic fields and plasma composition near the black hole. Interferometric closure quantities provide convincing evidence for the presence of circularly polarized emission on event-horizon scales. We produce images of the circular polarization using both traditional and newly developed methods. All methods find a moderate level of resolved circular polarization across the image (〈∣ v ∣〉 < 3.7%), consistent with the low image-integrated circular polarization fraction measured by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (∣ v _int ∣ < 1%). Despite this broad agreement, the methods show substantial variation in the morphology of the circularly polarized emission, indicating that our conclusions are strongly dependent on the imaging assumptions because of the limited baseline coverage, uncertain telescope gain calibration, and weakly polarized signal. We include this upper limit in an updated comparison to general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation models. This analysis reinforces the previously reported preference for magnetically arrested accretion flow models. We find that most simulations naturally produce a low level of circular polarization consistent with our upper limit and that Faraday conversion is likely the dominant production mechanism for circular polarization at 230 GHz in M87*.

Abstract A microneedle (MN) array is a novel biomedical device adopted in medical applications to pierce through the stratum corneum while targeting the viable epidermis and dermis layers of the skin. Owing to their micron-scale dimensions, MNs can minimize stimulations of the sensory nerve fibers in the dermis layer. For medical applications, such as wound healing, biosensing, and drug delivery, the structure of MNs significantly influences their mechanical properties. Among the various microfabrication methods for MNs, fused deposition modeling (FDM), a commercial 3D printing method, shows potential in terms of the biocompatibility of the printed material (polylactic acid (PLA)) and preprogrammable arbitrary shapes. Owing to the current limitations of FDM printer resolution, conventional micron-scale MN structures cannot be fabricated without a post-fabrication process. Hydrolysis in an alkaline solution is a feasible approach for reducing the size of PLA needles printed via FDM. Moreover, weak bonding between PLA layers during additive manufacturing triggers the detachment of PLA needles before etching to the expected sizes. Furthermore, various parameters for the fabrication of PLA MNs with FDM have yet to be sufficiently optimized. In this study, the thermal parameters of the FDM printing process, including the nozzle and printing stage temperatures, were investigated to bolster the interfacial bonding between PLA layers. Reinforced bonding was demonstrated to address the detachment challenges faced by PLA MNs during the chemical etching process. Furthermore, chemical etching parameters, including the etchant concentration, environmental temperature, and stirring speed of the etchant, were studied to determine the optimal etching ratio. To develop a universal methodology for the batch fabrication of biodegradable MNs, this study is expected to optimize the conditions of the FDM-based fabrication process. Additive manufacturing was employed to produce MNs with preprogrammed structures. Inclined MNs were successfully fabricated by FDM printing with chemical etching. This geometrical structure can be adopted to enhance adhesion to the skin layer. Our study provides a useful method for fabricating MN structures for various biomedical applications.

Scan-based logic built-in self-test (LBIST) is widely used for supporting the in-system test in automotive systems. Although this technology has the advantage of low-cost testing, it suffers from low fault coverage and high switching activity during the test. This can lead to many undetected defects, excessive heat dissipation, and IR drop, inducing catastrophic risks to functional safety. Therefore, improving these two key factors is crucial to alleviate reliability problems in the automotive domain. Most previous works have focused on controlling the enormous toggling level of random patterns; however, one of the main disadvantages of these approaches is low fault coverage. Unfortunately, additional hardware costs associated with memory elements or test points are required for detecting the remaining faults. We propose a novel LBIST scheme based on weight-aware scan grouping and scheduling (WGS) to overcome these difficulties. Since the required test time of each automotive product is limited, the proposed scheme freezes the test time and focuses on improving both aforementioned factors significantly. Our approach divides scan cells into two categories: the coverage-efficient scan group and power-efficient scan group, and then it conducts weight-based scan cell reordering. Biased random patterns are fed to enhance fault coverage for the first category. For the second category, scheduling and disabling are performed to reduce switching activity. Finally, physical-aware reordering based on an inverter is performed to reduce routing overhead. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the WGS methodology on the ITC’99 and OpenRISC benchmark circuits.

The membrane-bound O-acyltransferase domain-containing 7 (MBOAT7) gene is associated with intellectual disability, early onset seizures, and autism spectrum disorders. This study aimed to determine the pathogenetic mechanism of the MBOAT7 missense variant via molecular modeling. Three patients from a consanguineous family were found to have a homozygous c.757G>A (p.Glu253Lys) variant of MBOAT7. The patients showed prominent dysfunction in gait, swallowing, vocalization, and fine motor function and had intellectual disabilities. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed signal changes in the bilateral globus pallidi and cerebellar dentate nucleus, which differed with age. In the molecular model of human MBOAT7, Glu253 in the wild-type protein is located close to the backbone carbonyl oxygens in the loop near the helix, suggesting that the ionic interaction could contribute to the conformational stability of the funnel. Molecular modeling showed that Lys253 in the mutant protein was expected to alter the surface charge distribution, thereby potentially affecting substrate specificity. Changes in conformational stability and substrate specificity through varied ionic interactions are the suggested pathophysiological mechanisms of the MBOAT7 variant found in patients with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract To pierce through the skin and interact with the first biofluid available, microneedles should be mechanically strong. However, some polymers used to fabricate microneedles yield insufficient strength for the fabrication of arrays (PDMS, highly porous structures, etc.). To enhance mechanical properties, piercing materials can be used. They aim to pierce the skin evenly and dissolve quickly, clearing the way for underlying microneedles to interact with the interstitial fluid (ISF). Three materials—carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), alginate, and hyaluronic acid (HA)—are discussed in this article. Low concentrations, for a quick dissolution while keeping enhancing effect, are used ranging from 1–5%(w/w) in deionized water. Their overall aspects, such as geometrical parameters (tip width, height, and width), piercing capabilities, and dissolution time, are measured and discussed. For breaking the skin barrier, two key parameters—a sharp tip and overall mechanical strength—are highlighted. Each material fails the piercing test at a concentration of 1%(w/w). Concentrations of 3%(w/w) and of 5%(w/w) are giving strong arrays able to pierce the skin. For the purpose of this study, HA at a concentration of 3%(w/w) results in arrays composed of microneedles with a tip width of 48 ± 8 μm and pierced through the foil with a dissolution time of less than 2 min.

Ferromagnetic quasi-atomic behavior of interstitial anionic electrons (IAEs) in practical electrides is yet to be discovered experimentally. Here, the authors reveal that IAEs in two-dimensional electride [Gd2C]²+⋅2e- behave as magnetic elements with their own magnetic moment.

A reactive collision avoidance algorithm is proposed to enable safe autonomous flight in the presence of multiple dynamic obstacles. A position-controlled hexacopter equipped with a visual sensor obtaining obstacle information is considered as an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) platform. The proposed method centers on the concept of bounding tube which intrinsically extends the static bounding box to incorporate forthcoming movement of the obstacles into the collision avoidance framework. The processing pipeline consists of separate components for each of the sequential tasks in obstacle sensing and tracking. Computation of a spherical bounding box for each obstacle is followed by discrete-time Kalman filtering for prediction of obstacle trajectory to detect potential collision. If the current course of UAV turns out highly likely to end in collision with any of the obstacles, the vehicle steers to an aiming point chosen from among the bundle of candidates produced by constructing a bounding tube that takes account of predicted obstacle motion. The bounding-tube-based aiming point generation extends seamlessly to the case with multiple moving obstacles through running in series with multi-obstacle track management that combines hierarchical clustering of sensory data points for obstacle identification and a simple geometric method for data association. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify the performance of the proposed collision avoidance algorithm.

Autoencoders (AEs) have been widely used for unsupervised anomaly detection. They learn from normal samples such that they produce high reconstruction errors for anomalous samples. However, AEs can exhibit the over-detection issue because they imperfectly reconstruct not only anomalous samples but also normal ones. To address this issue, we introduce an outlier-exposed style distillation network (OE-SDN) that mimics the mild distortions caused by an AE, which are termed as style translation. We use the difference between the outputs of the OE-SDN and AE as an alternative anomaly score. Experiments on anomaly classification and segmentation tasks show that the performance of our method is superior to existing methods.

Introduction. This study aimed to establish a predictive model that includes physiological parameters and identify independent risk factors for severe injuries in bicycle rider accidents. Methods. This was a multicenter observational study. For four years, we included patients with bicycle rider injuries in the Emergency Department-Based Injury In-depth Surveillance database. In this study, we regarded ICD admission or in-hospital mortality as parameters of severe trauma. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to assess risk factors for severe trauma. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was generated to evaluate the performance of the regression model. Results. This study included 19,842 patients, of whom 1,202 (6.05%) had severe trauma. In multivariate regression analysis, male sex, older age, alcohol use, motor vehicle opponent, load state (general and crosswalk), blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and Glasgow Coma Scale were the independent factors for predicting severe trauma. In the ROC analysis, the area under the ROC curve for predicting severe trauma was 0.848 (95% confidence interval: 0.830–0.867). Conclusion. We identified independent risk factors for severe trauma in bicycle rider accidents and believe that physiologic parameters contribute to enhancing prediction ability.

In 2017 the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observed the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), at a frequency of 228.1 GHz ( λ = 1.3 mm). The fundamental physics tests that even a single pulsar orbiting Sgr A* would enable motivate searching for pulsars in EHT data sets. The high observing frequency means that pulsars—which typically exhibit steep emission spectra—are expected to be very faint. However, it also negates pulse scattering, an effect that could hinder pulsar detections in the Galactic center. Additionally, magnetars or a secondary inverse Compton emission could be stronger at millimeter wavelengths than at lower frequencies. We present a search for pulsars close to Sgr A* using the data from the three most sensitive stations in the EHT 2017 campaign: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the Large Millimeter Telescope, and the IRAM 30 m Telescope. We apply three detection methods based on Fourier-domain analysis, the fast folding algorithm, and single-pulse searches targeting both pulsars and burst-like transient emission. We use the simultaneity of the observations to confirm potential candidates. No new pulsars or significant bursts were found. Being the first pulsar search ever carried out at such high radio frequencies, we detail our analysis methods and give a detailed estimation of the sensitivity of the search. We conclude that the EHT 2017 observations are only sensitive to a small fraction (≲2.2%) of the pulsars that may exist close to Sgr A*, motivating further searches for fainter pulsars in the region.

In this series of papers, we present new methods of frequency- and time-dependent instrumental polarization calibration for very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). In most existing calibration tools and pipelines, it has been assumed that instrumental polarization is constant over frequency within the instrument bandwidth and over time. The assumption is not always true and may prevent an accurate calibration, which can result in degradation of the quality of linear polarization images. In this paper, we present a method of frequency-dependent instrumental polarization calibration that is implemented in GPCAL, a recently developed polarization calibration pipeline. The method is tested using simulated data sets generated from real Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) data. We present the results of applying the method to real VLBA data sets observed at 15 and 43 GHz. We were able to eliminate significant variability in cross-hand visibilities over frequency that is caused by frequency-dependent instrumental polarization. As a result of the calibration, linear polarization images were slightly to modestly improved as compared to those obtained without frequency-dependent instrumental polarization calibration. We discuss the reason for the minor impact of frequency-dependent instrumental polarization calibration on existing VLBA data sets and prospects for applying the method to future VLBI data sets, which are expected to provide very large bandwidths.

We present a new method of time-dependent instrumental polarization calibration for very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). This method has been implemented in the recently developed polarization calibration pipeline GPCAL. Instrumental polarization, also known as polarimetric leakage, is a direction-dependent effect, and it is not constant across the beam of a telescope. Antenna pointing model accuracy is usually dependent on time, resulting in off-axis polarimetric leakages that can vary with time. The method is designed to correct for the off-axis leakages with large amplitudes that can severely degrade linear polarization images. Using synthetic data generated based on real Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) data observed at 43 GHz, we evaluate the performance of the method. It was able to reproduce the off-axis leakages assumed in the synthetic data, particularly those with large amplitudes. The method has been applied to two sets of real VLBA data, and the derived off-axis leakages show very similar trends over time for pairs of nearby sources. Furthermore, the amplitudes of the off-axis leakages are strongly correlated with the antenna gain correction factors. The results demonstrate that the method is capable of correcting for the off-axis leakages present in VLBI data. By calibrating time-dependent instrumental polarization, the rms noise levels of the updated linear polarization images have been significantly reduced. The method is expected to substantially enhance the quality of linear polarization images obtained from existing and future VLBI observations.

We explored the parsec-scale nuclear regions of a sample of radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLSy1s) using the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry wideband (at a recording rate of 16 Gbps) polarimetry at 22 and 43 GHz. Our targets include 1H 0323+342, SBS 0846+513, PMN J0948+0022, 1219+044, PKS 1502+036, and TXS 2116-077, which are all known to exhibit γ -ray emission indicative of possessing highly beamed jets similar to blazars. For the first time, we unambiguously detected Faraday rotation toward the parsec-scale radio core of NLSy1s, with a median observed core rotation measure (RM) of 2.7 × 10 ^3 rad m ^−2 (or 6.3 × 10 ^3 rad m ^−2 for redshift-corrected). This level of RM magnitude is significantly larger than those seen in the core of BL Lacertae objects (BLOs; a dominant subclass of blazars), suggesting that the nuclear environment of NLSy1s is more gas-rich than that in BLOs. Interestingly, the observed parsec-scale polarimetric properties of NLSy1s (low core fractional polarization, large core RM and jet–EVPA misalignment) are rather similar to those of flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). Our results are in accordance with the scenario that NLSy1s are in an early stage of active galactic nucleus evolution with their central black hole masses being smaller than those of more evolved FSRQs.

Interpretation of resolved polarized images of black holes by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) requires predictions of the polarized emission observable by an Earth-based instrument for a particular model of the black hole accretion system. Such predictions are generated by general relativistic radiative transfer (GRRT) codes, which integrate the equations of polarized radiative transfer in curved spacetime. A selection of ray-tracing GRRT codes used within the EHT Collaboration is evaluated for accuracy and consistency in producing a selection of test images, demonstrating that the various methods and implementations of radiative transfer calculations are highly consistent. When imaging an analytic accretion model, we find that all codes produce images similar within a pixel-wise normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of 0.012 in the worst case. When imaging a snapshot from a cell-based magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we find all test images to be similar within NMSEs of 0.02, 0.04, 0.04, and 0.12 in Stokes I , Q , U , and V , respectively. We additionally find the values of several image metrics relevant to published EHT results to be in agreement to much better precision than measurement uncertainties.

We present millimeter and submillimeter continuum observations for 36 sources with potentially large black hole shadows at 230 and 345 GHz using the Submillimeter Array. The sources are selected based on the criterion of the large diameter of the black hole shadows. Our motivation is to explore the nature of the accretion flow of the potential candidates of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) through photometry at millimeter/submillimeter wavelengths. The detected result serves as the pathfinder of future high-angular resolution observations such as the Event Horizon Telescope. As a result, we successfully detected 17 and eight sources at 230 and 345 GHz, respectively. We reveal that three of the detected sources (IC 310, NGC 1277, and NGC 5846) show significant excess at millimeter/submillimeter wavelengths in comparison with the extrapolation both from low-frequency radio and infrared, which are considered to be attributed to the extended jet and dust component, respectively. One possible explanation is that these excesses are associated with the hot accretion flow onto the supermassive black holes of the LLAGNs. By adopting the advection-dominated accretion flow model's semi-analytic model, we obtained the upper bound of the mass accretion rate. Those are less than 10 ^−2 ${\dot{M}}_{\mathrm{EDD}}$ , where ${\dot{M}}_{\mathrm{EDD}}$ is the Eddington mass accretion rate computed via the Eddington luminosity. This is in good agreement with the expected range of the LLAGNs. The ∼200 mJy flux densities and negative spectral index of IC 1459 within millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths make it a promising candidate for future submillimeter high-angular resolution experiments for imaging the black hole shadow.

We report on the observations of the quasar NRAO 530 with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) on 2017 April 5−7, when NRAO 530 was used as a calibrator for the EHT observations of Sagittarius A*. At z = 0.902, this is the most distant object imaged by the EHT so far. We reconstruct the first images of the source at 230 GHz, at an unprecedented angular resolution of ∼20 μ as, both in total intensity and in linear polarization (LP). We do not detect source variability, allowing us to represent the whole data set with static images. The images reveal a bright feature located on the southern end of the jet, which we associate with the core. The feature is linearly polarized, with a fractional polarization of ∼5%–8%, and it has a substructure consisting of two components. Their observed brightness temperature suggests that the energy density of the jet is dominated by the magnetic field. The jet extends over 60 μ as along a position angle ∼ −28°. It includes two features with orthogonal directions of polarization (electric vector position angle), parallel and perpendicular to the jet axis, consistent with a helical structure of the magnetic field in the jet. The outermost feature has a particularly high degree of LP, suggestive of a nearly uniform magnetic field. Future EHT observations will probe the variability of the jet structure on microarcsecond scales, while simultaneous multiwavelength monitoring will provide insight into the high-energy emission origin.

Background: Health screening is a preventive and cost-effective public health strategy for early detection of diseases. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has decreased health screening participation. The aim of this study was to examine regional differences in health screening participation between before and during COVID-19 pandemic and vulnerabilities of health screening participation in the regional context. Methods: Administrative data from 229 districts consisting of 16 provinces in South Korea and health screening participation rate of each district collected in 2019 and 2020 were included in the study. Data were then analyzed via descriptive statistics and geographically weighted regression (GWR). Results: This study revealed that health screening participation rates decreased in all districts during COVID-19. Regional vulnerabilities contributing to a further reduction in health screening participation rate included COVID-19 concerns, the population of those aged 65+ years and the disabled, lower education level, lower access to healthcare, and the prevalence of chronic disease. GWR analysis showed that different vulnerable factors had different degrees of influence on differences in health screening participation rate. Conclusions: These findings could enhance our understanding of decreased health screening participation due to COVID-19 and suggest that regional vulnerabilities should be considered stringent public health strategies after COVID-19.

The East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) is an international VLBI facility in East Asia and is operated under mutual collaboration between East Asian countries, as well as part of Southeast Asian and European countries. EAVN currently consists of 16 radio telescopes and three correlators located in China, Japan, and Korea, and is operated mainly at three frequency bands, 6.7, 22, and 43 GHz with the longest baseline length of 5078 km, resulting in the highest angular resolution of 0.28 milliarcseconds at 43 GHz. One of distinct capabilities of EAVN is multi-frequency simultaneous data reception at nine telescopes, which enable us to employ the frequency phase transfer technique to obtain better sensitivity at higher observing frequencies. EAVN started its open-use program in the second half of 2018, providing a total observing time of more than 1100 h in a year. EAVN fills geographical gap in global VLBI array, resulting in enabling us to conduct contiguous high-resolution VLBI observations. EAVN has produced various scientific accomplishments especially in observations toward active galactic nuclei, evolved stars, and star-forming regions. These activities motivate us to initiate launch of the ’Global VLBI Alliance’ to provide an opportunity of VLBI observation with the longest baselines on the earth.

Branchiootorenal (BOR) syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant inherited disease with a prevalence of approximately 1 in 40,000 newborns. This disease is characterized by hearing loss, preauricular pits, branchial fistulas or cysts, and renal dysplasia. We discovered a case of BOR syndrome in a premature 2-week-old female infant with a gestational age of 32 weeks and two days. She and her family had major symptoms and a family history of BOR. BOR syndrome was confirmed by whole-genome sequencing and structural variant calling, which revealed an EYA1 exon 5–6 deletion. The infant had recurrent sleep and feeding cyanosis with second branchial anomalies. Via videofluoroscopic swallowing study and a modified barium swallow test, penetration into the vocal cords was observed before and during swallowing when bottle feeding. This is the first report of a preterm infant early diagnosed with BOR syndrome in which deletion margin was accurately identified by whole-genome sequencing and structural variant calling in Republic of Korea.

Textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) is used to strengthen reinforced concrete (RC) structures using a textile and inorganic matrix. TRM is a part of textile-based composites; the basic structural behaviors, application methods, and methodologies for the extension of actual structures in TRM were studied. However, structural behavior and performance verification which depict the long-term service situation and fatigue is limited. Therefore, this study, verified the flexural behavior of TRM-strengthened beams and their fatigue performances using carbon- and alkali-resistant (AR) glass textiles through 200,000 load cycles. TRM-strengthened beams were applied to an optimization strengthening method which consisted of whether the textile was straightened. According to the test results, the strengthening efficiency of TRM-strengthened beams when subjected to cyclic loading was lower than that of the monotonic loading, except for the straightened carbon textile specimen. The average efficiency of the AR-glass textile (straightened and non-straightened) and carbon (non-straightened) was 0.86 compared to the TRM-strengthened beam subjected to monotonic loading in terms of flexural strength. In the case of deflection, the average efficiency of the AR-glass textile type was similar to the monotonic loading test results, while that of the non-straightened carbon textile was improved. The Ca-S specimen that was used to straighten the carbon textile showed a reliable structural performance with a strength efficiency of 0.99 and a deflection efficiency of 0.97 compared to the monotonic load test. Therefore, TRM strengthening using a straightened carbon textile is expected to be sufficient for the fatigue design of TRM-strengthened beams.

The magnetic field is believed to play a critical role in the bulk acceleration and propagation of jets produced in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Polarization observations of AGN jets provide valuable information about their magnetic fields. As a result of radiative transfer, jet structure, and stratification, among other factors, it is not always straightforward to determine the magnetic field structures from observed polarization. We review these effects and their impact on polarization emission at a variety of wavelengths, including radio, optical, and ultraviolet wavelengths in this paper. It is also possible to study the magnetic field in the launching and acceleration regions of AGN jets by using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), which occurs on a small physical scale. Due to the weak polarization of the jets in these regions, probing the magnetic field is generally difficult. However, recent VLBI observations have detected significant polarization and Faraday rotation in some nearby sources. We present the results of these observations as well as prospects for future observations. Additionally, we briefly discuss recently developed polarization calibration and imaging techniques for VLBI data, which enable more in-depth analysis of the magnetic field structure around supermassive black holes and in AGN jets.

Textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) is a strengthening material in which textiles are attached to reinforced concrete (RC) structures using an inorganic matrix. Although many studies on structural behavior, various factors that affect TRM behavior could not be determined clearly. Especially, the uncertainty in bonds due to inorganic materials was not considered. In this study, the flexural behavior of TRM-strengthened beams was determined considering intermediate crack debonding occurred. The TRM beam strengthening limit and TRM coefficients were defined considering the possibility of premature failure and experimental results of four other research on 22 specimens. Therefore, it is expected that a conservative design would be possible when the suggested strengthening limit coefficient is applied.

Cryptographic circuits generally are used for applications of wireless sensor networks to ensure security and must be tested in a manufacturing process to guarantee their quality. Therefore, a scan architecture is widely used for testing the circuits in the manufacturing test to improve testability. However, during scan testing, test-power consumption becomes more serious as the number of transistors and the complexity of chips increase. Hence, the scan chain reordering method is widely applied in a low-power architecture because of its ability to achieve high power reduction with a simple architecture. However, achieving a significant power reduction without excessive computational time remains challenging. In this paper, a novel scan correlation-aware scan cluster reordering is proposed to solve this problem. The proposed method uses a new scan correlation-aware clustering in order to place highly correlated scan cells adjacent to each other. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a significant power reduction with a relatively fast computational time compared with previous methods. Therefore, by improving the reliability of cryptography circuits in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) through significant test-power reduction, the proposed method can ensure the security and integrity of information in WSNs.

HyperGam-U was recently developed to determine uranium enrichment based on γ- and X-ray spectroscopy analysis. The XKα region of the uranium spectrum contains 13 peaks for 235U and 238U and is used mainly for analysis. To describe the X-ray peaks, a Lorentzian broadened shape function was used, and methods were developed to reduce the number of fitting parameters for decomposing the strongly overlapping peaks using channel-energy, energy-width, and energy-efficiency calibration functions. For validation, eight certified reference material uranium samples covering uranium enrichments from 1% to 99% were measured using a high-resolution planar high-purity germanium detector and analyzed using the HyperGam-U code. When corrections for the attenuation and true coincidence summing were performed for the detection geometry in this experiment, the goodness of fit was improved by a few percent. The enrichment bias in this study did not exceed 2% compared with the certified values for all measured samples.

This paper presents a CMOS depth image sensor with offset pixel aperture (OPA) using a back-side illumination structure to improve disparity. The OPA method is an efficient way to obtain depth information with a single image sensor without additional external factors. Two types of apertures (i.e., left-OPA (LOPA) and right-OPA (ROPA)) are applied to pixels. The depth information is obtained from the disparity caused by the phase difference between the LOPA and ROPA images. In a CMOS depth image sensor with OPA, disparity is important information. Improving disparity is an easy way of improving the performance of the CMOS depth image sensor with OPA. Disparity is affected by pixel height. Therefore, this paper compared two CMOS depth image sensors with OPA using front-side illumination (FSI) and back-side illumination (BSI) structures. As FSI and BSI chips are fabricated via different processes, two similar chips were used for measurement by calculating the ratio of the OPA offset to pixel size. Both chips were evaluated for chief ray angle (CRA) and disparity in the same measurement environment. Experimental results were then compared and analyzed for the two CMOS depth image sensors with OPA.

Integrated guidance and control using model predictive control against a maneuvering target is proposed. Equations of motion for terminal homing are developed with the consideration of short-period dynamics as well as actuator dynamics of a missile. The convex optimization problem is solved considering inequality constraints that consist of acceleration and look angle limits. A discrete-time extended Kalman filter is used to estimate the position of the target with a look angle as a measurement. This is utilized to form a flight-path angle of the target, and polynomial fitting is applied for prediction. Numerical simulation including a Monte Carlo simulation is performed to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm.

A reactive three-dimensional maneuver strategy for a multirotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is proposed based on the collision cone approach to avoid potential collision with a single moving obstacle detected by an onboard sensor. A Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) system is assumed to be mounted on a hexacopter to obtain the obstacle information from the collected point clouds. The collision cone approach is enhanced to appropriately deal with the moving obstacle with the help of a Kalman filter. The filter estimates the position, velocity, and acceleration of the obstacle by using the LiDAR data as the associated measurement. The obstacle state estimate is utilized to predict the future trajectories of the moving obstacle. The collision detection and obstacle avoidance maneuver decisions are made considering the predicted trajectory of the obstacle. Numerical simulations, including a Monte Carlo campaign, are conducted to verify the performance of the proposed collision avoidance algorithm.

In this study, nine specimens were experimentally tested to analyze the strengthening efficiency of textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) and the difference in flexural behavior between prestressed and non-prestressed TRM-strengthened reinforced concrete beam. The test results show that TRM strengthening improves the flexural strength of TRM-strengthened reinforced concrete beams with alkali-resistant-(AR-) glass textile as well as that with carbon textile. However, in the case of textile prestressing, the strengthening efficiency for flexural strength of the AR-glass textile was higher than that of the carbon textile. The flexural stiffness of AR-glass textiles increased when prestressing was introduced and the use of carbon textiles can be advantageous to reduce the decreasing ratio of flexural stiffness as the load increased. In the failure mode, textile prestressing prevents the damage of textiles effectively owing to the crack and induces the debonding of the TRM.

In this study, one reinforced concrete specimen and six textile reinforced concrete (TRC) specimens were produced to analyze the flexural behavior of steel-textile-reinforced concrete. The TRC specimen was manufactured using a total of four variables: textile reinforcement amount, textile reinforcement hook, textile mesh type, textile lay out form. Flexural performance increases with textile reinforcement amount, textile reinforcement hook type and textile reinforcement mesh type. The flexural performance was improved when physical hooks were used. Furthermore, textile reinforcement was verified as being effective at controlling the deflection.

Microfluidic devices employing dielectrophoresis (DEP) have been widely studied and applied in the manipulation and analysis of single cells. However, several pre-processing steps, such as the preparation of purified target samples and buffer exchanges, are necessary to utilize DEP forces for suspended cell samples. In this paper, a sequential cell-processing device, which is composed of pre-processing modules that employ deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) and a single-cell trapping device employing an electroactive microwell array (EMA), is proposed to perform the medium exchange followed by arraying single cells sequentially using DEP. Two original microfluidic devices were efficiently integrated by using the interconnecting substrate containing rubber gaskets that tightly connect the inlet and outlet of each device. Prostate cancer cells (PC3) suspended in phosphate-buffered saline buffer mixed with microbeads were separated and then resuspended into the DEP buffer in the integrated system. Thereafter, purified PC3 cells were trapped in a microwell array by using the positive DEP force. The achieved separation and trapping efficiencies exceeded 94% and 93%, respectively, when using the integrated processing system. This study demonstrates an integrated microfluidic device by processing suspended cell samples, without the requirement of complex preparation steps.

The modular structure has a discontinuity owing to the joint between the modules; thus, structural behavior verification is required. In this study, the tensile behavior of a steel reinforcement at the discontinuity interface was evaluated in the joint of a modular flexural member. The modular specimen was fabricated with a 400 mm joint, and an integral specimen was fabricated with the same specifications as the modular specimen, without a joint. The largest crack width of the integral specimen was measured at the center of the beam, and that of the modular specimen was measured at the discontinuity interface. The maximum crack width of the modular specimen was greater than that of the integral specimen. The strain of the steel reinforcement was estimated using the measured crack width and six formulas for evaluating the crack width. The estimated strain of the modular specimen was higher than that of the integral specimen, and the deformation of the steel reinforcement at the discontinuity interface was accelerated with the increasing load. Therefore, the tensile load was concentrated at the discontinuity interface in the modular specimen, and the steel reinforcement at the discontinuity interface was likely to yield earlier than the integral specimen.

A mapping guidance algorithm of a quadrotor for unknown indoor environments is proposed. A sensor with limited sensing range is assumed to be mounted on the quadrotor to obtain object data points. With obtained data, the quadrotor computes velocity vector and yaw commands to move around the object while maintaining a safe distance. The magnitude of the velocity vector is also controlled to prevent a collision. The distance transform method is applied to establish dead-end situation logic as well as exploration completion logic. When a dead-end situation occurs, the guidance algorithm of the quadrotor is switched to a particular maneuver. The proposed maneuver enables the quadrotor not only to escape from the dead-end situation, but also to find undiscovered area to continue mapping. Various numerical simulations are performed to verify the performance of the proposed mapping guidance algorithm.

This paper studies the indoor localization based on Wi-Fi received signal strength indicator (RSSI). In addition to position estimation, this study examines the expansion of applications using Wi-Fi RSSI data sets in three areas: (i) feature extraction, (ii) mobile fingerprinting, and (iii) mapless localization. First, the features of Wi-Fi RSSI observations are extracted with respect to different floor levels and designated landmarks. Second, the mobile fingerprinting method is proposed to allow a trainer to collect training data efficiently, which is faster and more efficient than the conventional static fingerprinting method. Third, in the case of the unknown-map situation, the trajectory learning method is suggested to learn map information using crowdsourced data. All of these parts are interconnected from the feature extraction and mobile fingerprinting to the map learning and the estimation. Based on the experimental results, we observed (i) clearly classified data points by the feature extraction method as regards the floors and landmarks, (ii) efficient mobile fingerprinting compared to conventional static fingerprinting, and (iii) improvement of the positioning accuracy owing to the trajectory learning.

In this study, to compare strengthening efficiency and flexural behaviors of textile- reinforced mortar (TRM) according to various types of strengthening methods without the textile being impregnated, ten specimens were tested. The results showed that TRM was beneficial for uniform distribution of cracks and increased the strengthening efficiency and load-bearing capacity, as textile reinforcement ratio and textile lamination increased and the mesh size of the textile decreased and mechanical end anchorage applied. However, the strengthening effect was shown obviously until the yield load considering structural safety and serviceability.

This paper presents the effects of offset pixel aperture width on the performance of monochrome (MONO) CMOS image sensors (CISs) for a three-dimensional image sensor. Using a technique to integrate the offset pixel aperture (OPA) inside each pixel, the depth information can be acquired using a disparity from OPA patterns. The OPA is classified into two pattern types: Left-offset pixel aperture (LOPA) and right-offset pixel aperture (ROPA). These OPAs are divided into odd and even rows and integrated in a pixel array. To analyze the correlation between the OPA width and the sensor characteristics, experiments were conducted by configuring the test elements group (TEG) regions. The OPA width of the TEG region for the measurement varied in the range of 0.3–0.5 μm. As the aperture width decreased, the disparity of the image increased, while the sensitivity decreased. It is possible to acquire depth information by the disparity obtained from the proposed MONO CIS using the OPA technique without an external light source. Therefore, the proposed MONO CIS with OPA could easily be applied to miniaturized devices. The proposed MONO CIS was designed and manufactured using the 0.11 μm CIS process.

A complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor (CIS), using offset pixel aperture (OPA) technique, was designed and fabricated using the 0.11-µm CIS process. In conventional cameras, an aperture is located on the camera lens. However, in a CIS camera using OPA technique, apertures are integrated as left-offset pixel apertures (LOPAs) and right-offset pixel apertures (ROPAs). A color pattern is built, comprising LOPA, blue, red, green, and ROPA pixels. The disparity information can be acquired from the LOPA and ROPA channels. Both disparity information and two-dimensional (2D) color information can be simultaneously acquired from the LOPA, blue, red, green, and ROPA channels. A geometric model of the OPA technique is constructed to estimate the disparity of the image, and the measurement results are compared with the estimated results. Depth extraction is thus achieved by a single CIS using the OPA technique, which can be easily adapted to commercial CIS cameras.

The use of precast concrete modular construction in the replacement and rebuilding of old structures has recently increased. However, the joints between modules in this type of construction exhibit special behavior that should be considered when analyzing the behavior of modular members. Both stability and serviceability should be studied; however, existing research has only addressed the former. Research regarding serviceability, involving deflection and crack development and propagation, is lacking. This study considers the difference in strength between on-site cast and precast segmental concrete to accurately evaluate the deflection of precast concrete flexural members with joints within the lapped splice. In addition, to reflect an initial crack, the deflection is calculated and evaluated by reflecting the effect of tension-stiffening and subsequently redefining the attached transmission lengths of the left and right sides of the cracked surface as a new cracked region. As a result of explicitly including joint behavior which is considered attached transmission length and characteristic by concrete strength, a more accurate calculation of deflection is developed.
