This paper presents a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) interface circuit for low-voltage DC-type energy harvesting sources such as light and thermal energy. Most energy harvesting systems used in miniature-sized sensor systems require start-up circuits because the output voltages of small-sized energy transducers are very low and not enough to directly power electronic systems. The proposed interface circuit is driven directly by the low output voltages of small size energy transducers, eliminating the need for complex start-up circuitry. A simple MPPT controller with the fractional open-circuit voltage (FOCV) method is designed and fabricated in a 65-nm complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process. Measurement results show that the designed circuit can track the MPP voltage even in the presence of the open-circuit voltage fluctuations and can operate properly at operating voltages as low as 0.3 V. The interface circuit achieves a peak power efficiency of 97.1% and an MPPT accuracy of over 98.3%.

This study aimed to analyze the association between temperature and precipitation and the incidence of hepatitis A in Seoul, Korea, as meteorological factors may have different effects on specific diseases depending on the lifestyle in each region. Weekly cases of hepatitis A, weekly mean daily precipitation, and temperature data from 2016 to 2020 were analyzed. Quasi-Poisson-generalized linear models with time variable adjusted by spline function were used considering 0-6-week lags. The association of each variable and hepatitis A incidence was assessed by the single lag and the constrained distributed lag model. Multivariable distributed lag linear and non-linear models were used to develop models with significant independent variables. Weekly mean of daily mean temperature (Tmean) and maximum temperature (Tmax) were negatively associated with hepatitis A in the 6-week lag. Precipitation was negatively associated with hepatitis A in the 5- and 6-week lags. The multivariable model showed the negative association of Tmax, precipitation and hepatitis A in the 5- and 6-week lags. In the non-linear models, the incidence rate ratio (IRR) was the highest at a Tmax of 11 °C and decreased thereafter. IRR was the highest at 12 mm of precipitation and showed decrease pattern to 25 mm and then gradually increased in the 5- and 6-week lags. Identifying the impact of climate factors on hepatitis A incidence would help in the development of strategies to prevent diseases and indirectly estimate the impact of climate change on hepatitis A epidemiology.

Periplasmic α-amylase MalS (EC. 3.2.1.1), which belongs to glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 13 subfamily 19, is an integral component of the maltose utilization pathway in Escherichia coli K12 and used among Ecnterobacteriaceae for the effective utilization of maltodextrin. We present the crystal structure of MalS from E. coli and reveal that it has unique structural features of circularly permutated domains and a possible CBM69. The conventional C-domain of amylase consists of amino acids 120–180 (N-terminal) and 646–676 (C-terminal) in MalS, and the whole domain architecture shows the complete circular permutation of C-A-B-A-C in domain order. Regarding substrate interaction, the enzyme has a 6-glucosyl unit pocket binding it to the non-reducing end of the cleavage site. Our study found that residues D385 and F367 play important roles in the preference of MalS for maltohexaose as an initial product. At the active site of MalS, β-CD binds more weakly than the linear substrate, possibly due to the positioning of A402. MalS has two Ca2+ binding sites that contribute significantly to the thermostability of the enzyme. Intriguingly, the study found that MalS exhibits a high binding affinity for polysaccharides such as glycogen and amylopectin. The N domain, of which the electron density map was not observed, was predicted to be CBM69 by AlphaFold2 and might have a binding site for the polysaccharides. Structural analysis of MalS provides new insight into the structure–evolution relationship in GH13 subfamily 19 enzymes and a molecular basis for understanding the details of catalytic function and substrate binding of MalS.

Purpose: Pedicle screw fixation provides 3-column stabilization, multidimensional control, and a higher rate of interbody fusion. Although computed tomography (CT) is recommended for the postoperative assessment of pedicle screw fixation, its use is limited due to the radiation exposure dose. The purpose of this preliminary retrospective study was to assess the clinical usefulness of low-dose mobile cone-beam CT (CBCT) for the postoperative evaluation of pedicle screw fixation. Methods: The author retrospectively reviewed postoperative mobile CBCT images of 15 patients who underwent posterior pedicle screw fixation for spinal disease from November 2019 to April 2020. Pedicle screw placement was assessed for breaches of the bony structures. The breaches were graded based on the Heary classification. Results: The patients included 11 men and four women, and their mean age was 66±12 years. Of the 122 pedicle screws, 34 (27.9%) were inserted in the thoracic segment (from T7 to T12), 82 (67.2%) in the lumbar segment (from L1 to L5), and six (4.9%) in the first sacral segment. Although there were metal-related artifacts, the image of the screw position (according to Heary classification) after surgery could be assessed using mobile CBCT at all levels (T7–S1). Conclusions: Mobile CBCT was accurate in determining the location and integrity of the pedicle screw and identifying the surrounding bony structures. In the postoperative setting, mobile CBCT can be used as a primary modality for assessing the accuracy of pedicle screw fixation and detecting postoperative complications.

The South Korean Supreme Court decision (2009Da17471), May 21, 2009, on removing life-sustaining medical care from persistent vegetative patients gave consent to death with dignity and initiated a lively debate in South Korea. The legal grounds for this decision were based on dignity, worth, and the right to pursue happiness regulated in Article 10 of the Constitution, The Death with Dignity Act was legislated as a law for life-sustaining medical care through debate and agreement on February 3, 2016, and has since been revised four times. However, there are some issues to discuss with this Act. First, the definition of the process of dying is unclear because the determining point of the dying process is different from the status of the attachment or detachment of an artificial ventilator. Second, the purpose of this law is the protection of dignity, worth, and the right to pursue happiness. As nutrition, fluid, and oxygen must be continuously supplied, even if the artificial ventilator is removed, is it reasonable to suggest that supplying these continuously achieves Article 10 of the Constitution? Third, if the withdrawal of life-sustaining medical care is possible or permitted without the patient’s approval, what is the legal value of advance directives? Fourth, it is whether death with dignity could be extended to the euthanasia. Conclusively, it may be necessary to partially revise the law for life-sustaining medical care through further debate and agreement.

Vibrio vulnificus MO6-24/O has three genes annotated as debranching enzymes or pullulanase genes. Among them, the gene encoded by VVMO6_03032 (vvde1) shares a higher similarity at the amino acid sequence level to the glycogen debranching enzymes, AmyX of Bacillus subtilis (40.5%) and GlgX of Escherichia coli (55.5%), than those encoded by the other two genes. The vvde1 gene encoded a protein with a molecular mass of 75.56 kDa and purified Vvde1 efficiently hydrolyzed glycogen and pullulan to shorter chains of maltodextrin and maltotriose (G3), respectively. However, it hydrolyzed amylopectin and soluble starch far less efficiently, and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) only rarely. The optimal pH and temperature of Vvde1 was 6.5 and 25°C, respectively. Vvde1 was a cold-adapted debranching enzyme with more than 60% residual activity at 5°C. It could maintain stability for 2 days at 25°C and 1 day at 35°C, but it destabilized drastically at 40°C. Maltodextrin glucosidase (MalZ) is a key enzyme in the maltose utilization pathway in Escherichia coli that liberates glucose from the reducing end of the short malto-oligosaccharides. Unlike other enzymes in the GH13_21 subfamily, the hydrolytic activity of MalZ is limited to maltodextrin rather than long starch substrates, forming various transglycosylation products in α-1,3, α-1,4 or α-1,6 linkages. The mechanism for the substrate binding and hydrolysis of this enzyme is not well understood yet. Here, we present the dimeric crystal structure of MalZ, with the N-domain generating a unique substrate binding groove. The N-domain bears CBM34 architecture and forms a part of the active site in the catalytic domain of the adjacent molecule. The groove found between the N-domain and catalytic domain from the adjacent molecule, shapes active sites suitable for short malto-oligosaccharides, but hinders long stretches of oligosaccharides. The conserved residue of E44 protrudes at subsite +2, elucidating the hydrolysis pattern of the substrate by the glucose unit from the reducing end. The structural analysis provides a molecular basis for the substrate specificity and the enzymatic property, and has potential industrial application for protein engineering.

Inotodiol has been proven to have antitumor, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antiallergic properties. This study investigated the immunomodulatory capability of inotodiol in allergic rhinitis mice.Forty BALB/c mice were divided into four groups, 10 mice each: control (CON), allergic rhinitis with PBS treatment (AR), inotodiol treatment (AR+Ino), and dexamethasone treatment (AR+Dex). Episodes of sneezing and nose rubbing were counted. Cytokines in nasal lavage fluid (NLF) and immunoglobulin in blood serum were measured. Nasal mucosae from each group were used for protein, RT-PCR, and histological analyses. Splenocytes were cultured for evaluation of cytokine production in each group.Symptoms of rubbing and sneezing improved in the group of AR+Ino and AR+Dex than in the AR. NLF in the AR+Ino and AR+Dex also showed a significant decrease in interleukin (IL)-5, IL-10, and IL-13 compared to the AR. In addition, the number of eosinophils, goblet cells, and mast cells were notably lower in the nasal mucosae of the AR+Ino and AR+Dex. IL-4 and IL-17A in the AR+Ino and AR+Dex groups were decreased compared to the AR. Chemokines related to mast cell degradation were also decreased in the AR+Ino and AR+Dex groups. Total immunoglobulin (Ig)E, specific IgE and OVA-specific IgG1, and histamine levels were also significantly lower in the AR+Ino and AR+Dex groups. IL-10 and IL-13 were notably increased in the splenocytes of the AR after OVA stimulation, while the other groups showed no change.These results indicate inotodiol can help suppress allergic responses by immunomodulation activities. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected medical and dental care in Korea. This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the intention to use dental care in industrial workers, an economically active population. An online questionnaire survey was completed by 301 industrial workers. Stress and anxiety to viral epidemics-6 (SAVE-6), attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavior control, and intention to use dental care, based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), were measured. Predisposing, enabling, and need factors based on the Andersen model were measured as control variables for influencing factors. In the final hierarchical multiple regression analysis, the most significant relevant factors affecting intention to use dental care were attitude (β = 0.598, p < 0.001), followed by experience of dental clinic visits (β = 0.237, p < 0.001), subjective norm (β = 0.125, p < 0.001), perceived behavior control (β = 0.114, p = 0.004), SAVE-6 (β = −0.073, p = 0.025), and gingival bleeding (β = 0.062, p = 0.029). Dental care use decreased to 58.5%, and socio-psychological factors based on TPB were closely associated with the intention to use dental care. Therefore, awareness must be raised regarding oral health practices to increase the use of dental care among industrial workers.

We determined the association between the number of natural and implant teeth with activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental ADL (IADL) levels in middle-aged and older adults aged ≥ 55 years. We included 6,925 participants, who underwent a computer-assisted personal interview in the 7th Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging. After controlling for general characteristics, the associations between the number of natural and implant teeth with ADL and IADL levels were examined using multiple regression analysis. The participants had 21.2 natural teeth and 1.08 implant teeth on average. The ADL and IADL levels were 0.61 and 1.56, 0.40 and 1.16, and 1.10 and 0.31 in participants with ≤ 9, 10–19, and ≥ 20 teeth, respectively. There was no significant association between ADL and the number of natural and implant teeth (p > 0.05). However, a one-unit increase in IADL score was associated with a reduced number of natural (β = −0.031, p < 0.001) and implant (β = −0.194, p = 0.006) teeth. Difficulties regarding IADL were associated with fewer natural and implant teeth, suggesting that maintaining and managing the number of teeth is critical to promoting the health of middle-aged and older adults.

Recently, bioactive glass nanoparticles (BGns) have been acknowledged for their ability to promote interactions with the periapical tissue and enhance tissue regeneration by releasing therapeutic ions. However, there have been no studies on calcium silicate sealers with bioactive glass nanoparticle (BGn) additives. In the present study, a premixed calcium silicate root canal sealer reinforced with BGn (pre-mixed-RCS@BGn) was developed and its physicochemical features and biological effects were analyzed. Three specimens were in the trial: 0%, 0.5%, and 1% bioactive glass nanoparticles (BGns) were gradually added to the premixed type of calcium silicate-based sealer (pre-mixed-RCS). To elucidate the surface properties, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy were used and flowability, setting time, solubility, and radiopacity were analyzed to evaluate the physical properties. Chemical properties were investigated by water contact angle, pH change, and ion release measurements. The antibacterial effects of the bioactive set sealers were tested with Enterococcus faecalis and the viability of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) with this biomaterial was examined. In addition, osteogenic differentiation was highly stimulated, which was confirmed by ALP (Alkaline phosphatase) activity and the ARS (Alizarin red S) staining of hMSCs. The pre-mixed-RCS@BGn satisfied the ISO standards for root canal sealers and maintained antimicrobial activity. Moreover, pre-mixed-RCS@BGn with more BGns turned out to have less cytotoxicity than pre-mixed-RCS without BGns while promoting osteogenic differentiation, mainly due to calcium and silicon ion release. Our results suggest that BGns enhance the biological properties of this calcium silicate-based sealer and that the newly introduced pre-mixed-RCS@BGn has the capability to be applied in dental procedures as a root canal sealer. Further studies focusing more on the biocompatibility of pre-mixed-RCS@BGn should be performed to investigate in vivo systems, including pulp tissue.

Exosomes have been mainly studied for their potential applications in biomarker detection and drug delivery for diagnosis and treatment. However, in the field of forensic research, the potential value of exosomes derived from post-mortem body fluids has not been investigated to date. Here, we isolated the exosomes and exosomal RNAs from post-mortem body fluids, including cardiac blood, pericardial fluid, and urine. We also compared commercial exosome isolation kits to determine the optimal method for post-mortem exosome isolation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the Agilent bioanalyzer system, and western blotting were used to evaluate the efficiencies of alternative isolation methods and the characteristics of isolated exosomes. There were no significant differences between exosomes obtained from post-mortem and ante-mortem body fluids in the expression of exosome surface markers or morphology. The exosomes were well-preserved even under simulated post-mortem conditions. Among the isolation procedures tested, the membrane affinity column-based method was the most suitable for post-mortem exosomal RNA isolation. These results suggest that exosomes are well-preserved in post-mortem body fluids and could be utilized for forensic diagnosis.

Objectives: Various toxic substances can be generated from incinerators, and nearby residents can be exposed, and epidemiological studies have shown wide variations in risk estimates for cancer risk in populations living close to incinerators. Methods: According to the PRISMA guidelines, a literature search and systematic review were conducted to identify studies conducted on general populations exposed to environmental incinerator emissions and cancer outcomes. Meta-analysis was performed according to the cancer type, and two or more studies were reported. Subgroup analysis was done for sex, exposure estimation method, study period and type of outcome.Results: Eleven studies were found for qualitative review and meta-analysis. Seven studies had a case-control design, and four had a cohort design. The pooled effect size was not significant for breast, colorectal, liver, lung, lymphohematopoietic, NHL, sarcoma, stomach, bladder, CNS, larynx, leukemia and all-cancers. In the subgroup analysis, the pooled effect size of laryngeal cancer in females was 1.82 (95% Confidence Interval = 1.10–3.01), although only two studies were identified.Conclusions: So far, meta-analysis did not provide evidence of an increased risk for any cancer among populations living near waste incinerators except laryngeal cancer in female. However, since the number of reviewed literatures is small and there are various cancer types that have significantly increased in individual studies, regular evidence update is necessary.
