Prostate cancer (PCa) progression relies on androgen receptor (AR) function, making AR a top candidate for PCa therapy. However, development of drug resistance is common, which eventually leads to development of castration‐resistant PCa. This warrants a better understanding of the pathophysiology of PCa that facilitates the aberrant activation of key signaling pathways including AR. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) function as regulators of cancer progression as they modulate various cellular processes. Here, we demonstrate a multidimensional function of miR‐30e through the regulation of genes involved in various signaling pathways. We noted loss of miR‐30e expression in prostate tumors, which, when restored, led to cell cycle arrest, induction of apoptosis, improved drug sensitivity of PCa cells and reduced tumor progression in xenograft models. We show that experimental upregulation of miR‐30e reduces expression of mRNAs including AR, FBXO45, SRSF7 and MYBL2 and a novel long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) HELLPAR, which are involved in cell cycle, apoptosis and ubiquitination, and the effects could be rescued by inhibition of miR‐30e expression. RNA immunoprecipitation analysis confirmed direct interactions between miR‐30e and its RNA targets. We noted a newly identified reciprocal relationship between miR‐30e and HELLPAR, as inhibition of HELLPAR improved stabilization of miR‐30e. Transcriptome profiling and quantitative real‐time PCR (qRT‐PCR) validation of miR‐30e‐expressing PCa cells showed differential expression of genes involved in cell cycle progression, apoptosis and ubiquitination, which supports our in vitro study. This study demonstrates an integrated function of miR‐30e on dysregulation of miRNA/lncRNA/mRNA axes that may have diagnostic and therapeutic significance in aggressive PCa.

This study aimed to determine whether secondhand smoking (SHS) in adolescents is associated with allergic diseases. Data from the 2019 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey were used (N = 37,848 Korean adolescents: 19,114 boys and 18,734 girls). This study assessed SHS exposure using questionnaire data, which included information, such as exposure to SHS and allergic diseases. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between exposure to SHS and allergic diseases. The results showed that exposure to SHS in schools and public places, exposure for 1–3 days (OR = 1.158, 95% CI, 1.077–1.246), 4–6 days (OR = 1.308, 95% CI, 1.190–1.438), and everyday (OR = 1.306, 95% CI, 1.187–1.437), and exposure in one, two, or three places were significantly associated with allergic diseases (one OR = 1.226, 95% CI, 1.169–1.128, two OR = 1.289, 95% CI, 1.222–1.360 and three OR = 1.282, 95% CI, 1.177–1.395). The present results show that exposure to SHS occurs in various places and at various frequencies, and it is associated with allergic diseases in Korean adolescents.

Abstract Background Excessive smartphone use has been associated with numerous psychiatric disorders. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of smartphone addiction and its association with depression, anxiety, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in a large sample of Korean adolescents. Methods A total of 4512 (2034 males and 2478 females) middle- and high-school students in South Korea were included in this study. Subjects were asked to complete a self-reported questionnaire, including measures of the Korean Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and Conners-Wells’ Adolescent Self-Report Scale (CASS). Smartphone addiction and non-addiction groups were defined using SAS score of 42 as a cut-off. The data were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results 338 subjects (7.5%) were categorized to the addiction group. Total SAS score was positively correlated with total CASS score, BDI score, BAI score, female sex, smoking, and alcohol use. Using multivariate logistic regression analyses, the odds ratio of ADHD group compared to the non-ADHD group for smartphone addiction was 6.43, the highest among all variables (95% CI 4.60–9.00). Conclusions Our findings indicate that ADHD may be a significant risk factor for developing smartphone addiction. The neurobiological substrates subserving smartphone addiction may provide insights on to both shared and discrete mechanisms with other brain-based disorders.

OBJECTIVES This study aimed to identify the effect of mental health on frequency of falls (single and recurrent falls) among elderly adults. METHODS Data were drawn from the 2015 Korean Community Health Survey. A chi-square test was conducted to compare differences in fall frequency according to health-related behaviors, chronic diseases, and mental health. Subsequently, multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to identify the effects of mental health on single and recurrent falls based on variables found to be significant in the chi-square test. RESULTS Recurrent falls were found to be more risky than single falls. Depression was significantly related to single falls (odds ratio [OR], 1.27; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12 to 1.44). Depression (OR, 1.56; 95% CI, 1.38 to 1.76), sleep disorder (5 hours or less: OR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.23; more than 9 hours: OR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.07 to 1.44, respectively), and subjective stress (OR, 2.30; 95% CI, 1.90 to 2.78) were significantly related to recurrent falls. CONCLUSIONS The study’s findings suggest that specialized fall prevention programs are needed to address different types of falls in elderly adults. To prevent recurrent falls, systematic treatment strategies and rehabilitation training must improve physical function and mental health.

The present study was conducted to assess the relationship between anemia and pulse pressure (PP) and hypertension (HTN). Data from 16,060 adults (aged ≥20 years) in the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010–2012) were analyzed. Several key findings were identified. First, after adjusting for related variables, the odds ratio (OR) of anemia (hemoglobin 61 mmHg; OR, 1.517; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.270–1.812). Second, after adjusting for related variables (except body mass index [BMI] and waist measurement [WM]), the OR of anemia, with a normal blood pressure group as a reference, was significant for the HTN group (systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg or use of HTN medications; OR, 0.835; 95% CI, 0.709–0.983). However, when further adjusted for BMI and WM, anemia was not associated with HTN (OR, 0.884; 95% CI, 0.750–1.042). In conclusion, anemia was positively associated with high PP, but was not associated with HTN.

Abstract Background Dysregulation of microRNA (miRNA) expression is associated with hallmarks of aggressive tumor phenotypes, e.g., enhanced cell growth, proliferation, invasion, and anchorage independent growth in prostate cancer (PCa). Methods Serum-based miRNA profiling involved 15 men diagnosed with non-metastatic (stage I, III) and metastatic (stage IV) PCa and five age-matched disease-free men using miRNA arrays with select targets confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The effect of miR-186-5p inhibition or ectopic expression on cellular behavior of PCa cells (i.e., PC-3, MDA-PCa-2b, and LNCaP) involved the use bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation, invasion, and colony formation assays. Assessment of the impact of miR-186-5p inhibition or overexpression on selected targets entailed microarray analysis, qRT-PCR, and/or western blots. Statistical evaluation used the modified t-test and ANOVA analysis. Results MiR-186-5p was upregulated in serum from PCa patients and metastatic PCa cell lines (i.e., PC-3, MDA-PCa-2b, LNCaP) compared to serum from disease-free individuals or a normal prostate epithelial cell line (RWPE1), respectively. Inhibition of miR-186-5p reduced cell proliferation, invasion, and anchorage-independent growth of PC-3 and/or MDA-PCa-2b PCa cells. AKAP12, a tumor suppressor target of miR-186-5p, was upregulated in PC-3 and MDA-PCa-2b cells transfected with a miR-186-5p inhibitor. Conversely, ectopic miR-186-5p expression in HEK 293 T cells decreased AKAP12 expression by 30%. Both pAKT and β-catenin levels were down-regulated in miR-186-5p inhibited PCa cells. Conclusions Our findings suggest miR-186-5p plays an oncogenic role in PCa. Inhibition of miR-186-5p reduced PCa cell proliferation and invasion as well as increased AKAP12 expression. Future studies should explore whether miR-186-5p may serve as a candidate prognostic indicator and a therapeutic target for the treatment of aggressive prostate cancer.

Recently, breast cancer prevalence has increased in South Korea. In this study, we investigated the correlation between breast cancer prevalence and socioeconomic status. This study enrolled 27,331 people who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) IV-VI (2007-2015). In addition, we obtained data from the Korean Statistical Information Service (KSIS) on the breast cancer age-standardized incidence rate (AIR), the age-standardized mortality rate (AMR), the number of women screened, and the number of newly diagnosed patients. The KHANES data showed that breast cancer prevalence was significantly associated with educational level (odds ratio [OR], 2.02; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08-3.77 for 10-12 vs. ≤ 6 years of education, and OR, 2.36; 95% CI, 1.10-5.06 for ≥ 13 vs. ≤ 6 years of education). However, there was no significant association of breast cancer prevalence with monthly household income. In a separate analysis of the AIR, AMR, and number of women screened for breast cancer, the AIR increased with the number of women screened, whereas the AMR did not. Furthermore, the number of newly diagnosed patients in all age groups increased over time. The present results demonstrate that the recently increased breast cancer prevalence documented in South Korea may be attributable to earlier detection rather than to a real increase in prevalence, and that breast cancer may be overdiagnosed.

ObjectivesSeveral previous studies have found that healthy behaviors substantially reduce non-communicable disease incidence and mortality. The present study was performed to estimate the prevalence of four modifiable healthy behaviors and a healthy lifestyle among Korean adults according to socio-demographic and regional factors.MethodsWe analyzed data from 199 400 Korean adults aged 19 years and older who participated in the 2010 Korean Community Health Survey. We defined a healthy lifestyle as a combination of four modifiable healthy behaviors: non-smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, regular walking, and a healthy weight. We calculated the prevalence rates and odds ratios of each healthy behavior and healthy lifestyle according to socio-demographic and regional characteristics.ResultsThe prevalence rates were as follows: non-smoking, 75.0% (53.7% in men, 96.6% in women); moderate alcohol consumption, 88.2% (79.7% in men, 96.9% in women); regular walking, 45.0% (46.2% in men, 43.8% in women); healthy weight, 77.4% (71.3% in men, 73.6% in women); and a healthy lifestyle, 25.5% (16.4% in men, 34.6% in women). The characteristics associated with a low prevalence of healthy lifestyle were male gender, younger age (19 to 44 years of age), low educational attainment, married, living in a rural area, living in the Chungcheong, Youngnam, or Gwangwon-Jeju region, and poorer self-rated health.ConclusionsFurther research should be implemented to explore the explainable factors of disparities for socio-demographic and regional characteristics to engage in the healthy lifestyle among adults.

Population-based epidemiological studies on disease burden and risk factors for psoriatic arthritis (PsA) in patients with psoriasis (PsO) are limited, especially in Asian populations. Therefore, the aim was to determine the prevalence and incidence of PsA among PsO patients in Korea, and examine associated clinical factors. A cohort study was performed to determine the annual prevalence and incidence of PsA among PsO patients between 2008 and 2020 using nationwide claims data in Korea. Risk factors for PsA development were also examined using logistic regression among matched PsA cases and controls. An increasing trend in PsA prevalence per 1,000 patients was observed; prevalence was 6.17 (95% confidence interval [CI] 5.73–6.65) in 2008 and 19.03 (95% CI 18.39–19.70) in 2020. Similarly, the PsA incidence rate per 1,000 patient-years increased from 3.35 (95% CI 3.01–3.72) in 2008 to 5.01 (95% CI 4.68–5.36) in 2020. Patients with plaque PsO, moderate-to severe PsO, receiving oral systemic therapy or phototherapy, with a higher burden of comorbidities, and concomitant autoimmune diseases had a higher risk of PsA. The results provide insight into the burden of PsA among PsO patients in Korea and risk factors associated with developing PsA.

ObjectivesAs a baseline study to aid in the development of proper policy, we investigated the current condition of unpreparedness of documents required when issuing copies of medical records and related factors.MethodsThe study was comprised of 7,203 cases in which copies of medical records were issued from July 1st, 2007 through June 30th, 2008 to 5 tertiary referral hospitals. Data from these hospitals was collected using their established electronic databases and included study variables such as unpreparedness of the required documents as a dependent variable and putative covariates.ResultsThe rate of unpreparedness of required documents was 14.9%. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed the following factors as being related to the high rate of unpreparedness: patient age (older patients had a higher rate), issuance channels (on admission > via out-patient clinic), type of applicant (others such as family members > for oneself > insurers), type of original medical record (utilization records on admission > other records), issuance purpose (for providing insurer > medical use), residential area of applicant (Seoul > Honam province and Jeju), and number of copied documents (more documents gave a lower rate). The rate of unpreparedness differed significantly among the hospitals; suggesting that they may have followed their own conventional protocols rather than legal procedures in some cases.ConclusionsThe study results showed that the level of compliance to the required legal procedure was high, but that problems occurred in assuring the safety of the medical information. A proper legislative approach is therefore required to balance the security of and access to medical information.

BackgroundRecent studies have shown that inadequate vitamin D levels are associated with a poor cancer prognosis, but data regarding actual vitamin D levels in cancer survivors are limited. This study investigated the vitamin D levels and prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among Korean cancer survivors compared with non-cancer controls, and identified the factors associated with vitamin D deficiency.MethodsUsing the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), 915 cancer survivors and 29,694 controls without a history of cancer were selected. Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured; vitamin D deficiency was defined as 25(OH)D levels less than 20 ng/mL. Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and associated factors.ResultsVitamin D deficiency was observed in 62.7% of cancer survivors and 67.1% of controls. Among cancer survivors, vitamin D deficiency was most prevalent among 19-44 year olds (76.2%) and among managers, professionals, and related workers (79.3%). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that younger cancer survivors and those who work indoors were predisposed to vitamin D deficiency.ConclusionVitamin D deficiency was prevalent among both cancer survivors and controls in Korea. The regular evaluation and management of vitamin D levels is needed for both bone health and general health in cancer survivors.

Small bowel variceal bleeding is a rare cause of gastrointestinal hemorrhage, with clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic incidental findings to life-threatening conditions. The diagnosis and management of small bowel bleeding are challenging because of the localization of the lesion and the difficulty of the procedure. Trans-arterial embolization (TAE) is a secure and straightforward method for treating ectopic varices. On the other hand, there have been limited local studies on the outcomes of TAE for patients with small bowel variceal hemorrhage. This paper reports patients diagnosed with small bowel variceal bleeding and treated with TAE.

Abstract The Antarctic Peninsula (AP) experienced a new extreme warm event and record-high surface melt in February 2022, rivaling the recent temperature records from 2015 and 2020, and contributing to the alarming series of extreme warm events over this region showing stronger warming compared to the rest of Antarctica. Here, the drivers and impacts of the event are analyzed in detail using a range of observational and modeling data. The northern/northwestern AP was directly impacted by an intense atmospheric river (AR) attaining category 3 on the AR scale, which brought anomalous heat and rainfall, while the AR-enhanced foehn effect further warmed its northeastern side. The event was triggered by multiple large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns linking the AR formation to tropical convection anomalies and stationary Rossby waves, with an anomalous Amundsen Sea Low and a record-breaking high-pressure system east of the AP. This multivariate and spatial compound event culminated in widespread and intense surface melt across the AP. Circulation analog analysis shows that global warming played a role in the amplification and increased probability of the event. Increasing frequency of such events can undermine the stability of the AP ice shelves, with multiple local to global impacts, including acceleration of the AP ice mass loss and changes in sensitive ecosystems.

The influenza A virus poses a serious threat to human health and is an important global public health issue. The drugs currently used for treatment are becoming increasingly ineffective against influenza A viruses and require the development of new antiviral drugs. Angelica tenuissima Nakai (ATN), a traditional herbal medicine belonging to the Umbelliferae family, exhibits a broad range of pharmacological activities, including inflammation, headache, and cold symptoms. In the present study, based on target protein identification, functional enrichment analysis, and gene set comparisons, we first suggested that ATN has potential therapeutic effects against influenza A virus infection. Next, methylthiazol tetrazolium (MTT) and sulforhodamine B colorimetric (SRB) assay results revealed that ATN exhibited low cytotoxicity in Madin–Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells. The antiviral properties of ATN were observed against H1N1 and H3N2 virus strains. Microscopy confirmed the increased survival rate of the host cells. Further time-of-addition experiments revealed that the addition of ATN before virus adsorption showed similar results to the whole period of treatment. The pre- and co-treated groups showed lower levels of viral RNA (M1 protein). The results of this study suggest that ATN exhibits antiviral properties against the influenza A virus. These therapeutic properties of ATN can serve as a theoretical basis for further research on the applicability of ATN in the development of antiviral agents.

Background: A number of mechanical decontamination methods have been proposed, however, there is no agreed-upon gold standard among them. This study aims to conduct a meta-analysis to assess the differences in the management of an inflammatory reaction around dental implants between air abrasion and mechanical decontamination. Methods: A comprehensive search strategy was employed, incorporating controlled vocabulary (MeSH) and free-text terms. This search was conducted by two reviewers to identify published systematic reviews. Three major electronic databases, namely, Medline via PubMed, the Cochrane database, and Embase, were searched up to May 2024. Results: Initially, 300 articles were identified. After conducting a comprehensive search and applying strict inclusion criteria, a total of 13 studies were deemed eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The results showed that the mean difference in probing depth between air abrasion and other mechanical decontamination was 0.28 (95% confidence interval, −0.20 to 0.76). The mean difference in probing depth of air abrasion compared with other mechanical decontamination in maintenance purposes was 1.05 (95% confidence interval, 0.18 to 1.91). The mean difference in bleeding on probing between air abrasion and other mechanical decontamination was 0.51 (95% confidence interval, 0.07 to 0.95). The mean difference in alveolar bone loss between air abrasion and other mechanical decontamination was −0.14 (95% confidence interval, −0.77 to 0.48). The mean difference in alveolar bone loss for surgical approaches of air abrasion compared with other mechanical decontamination was 0.32 (95% confidence interval, 0.03 to 0.61). Conclusions: The findings of the study indicate that the use of air abrasion was just as effective as other mechanical decontamination methods in reducing probing depth and alveolar bone loss. The subgroup analysis showed that air abrasion was less effective in reducing probing depth in maintenance purposes. Additionally, air abrasion was less effective in reducing alveolar bone loss in surgical approaches.

Background: This study aimed to conduct a meta-analysis to assess the differences in the performance of root coverage between collagen matrix and subepithelial connective tissue. Methods: A comprehensive search using a combination of controlled vocabulary (MeSH) and free-text terms was undertaken by two reviewers to identify published systematic reviews. Three major electronic databases (Medline via PubMed, Cochrane database, and Embase) were searched up to October 2023. Results: Initially, five hundred and seventy-six articles were identified, but only nine studies met the criteria for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Meta-analysis showed that the pooled mean difference in mean root coverage of collagen matrix compared with subepithelial connective tissue was −0.48 (95% confidence interval of −0.69 to −0.26). The relative risk of complete root coverage of collagen matrix compared with subepithelial connective tissue was 0.68 (95% confidence interval, 0.49 to 0.94). The pooled mean difference in width of keratinized tissue of collagen matrix compared with subepithelial connective tissue was −0.75 (95% confidence interval of −1.25 to −0.26). Conclusions: The outcomes of this study revealed that subepithelial connective tissue generally exhibited superior performance. Nonetheless, the utilization of the coronally advanced flap with collagen matrix may yield comparable results in terms of the percentage of complete root coverage.

Background: Researchers have noted that the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) heralds a promising era, with potential to significantly enhance diagnostic and predictive abilities in clinical settings. The aim of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the discrepancies in identifying anatomical landmarks between AI and manual approaches. Methods: A comprehensive search strategy was employed, incorporating controlled vocabulary (MeSH) and free-text terms. This search was conducted by two reviewers to identify published systematic reviews. Three major electronic databases, namely, Medline via PubMed, the Cochrane database, and Embase, were searched up to May 2024. Results: Initially, 369 articles were identified. After conducting a comprehensive search and applying strict inclusion criteria, a total of ten studies were deemed eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The results showed that the average difference in detecting anatomical landmarks between artificial intelligence and manual approaches was 0.35, with a 95% confidence interval (CI) ranging from −0.09 to 0.78. Additionally, the overall effect between the two groups was found to be insignificant. Upon further analysis of the subgroup of cephalometric radiographs, it was determined that there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of detecting anatomical landmarks. Similarly, the subgroup of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed no significant differences between the groups. Conclusions: In summary, the study concluded that the use of artificial intelligence is just as effective as the manual approach when it comes to detecting anatomical landmarks, both in general and in specific contexts such as cephalometric radiographs and CBCT evaluations.

Phylogenetic relationships, divergence times, and patterns of biogeographic descent among primate species are both complex and contentious. Here, we generate a robust molecular phylogeny for 70 primate genera and 367 primate species based on a concatenation of 69 nuclear gene segments and ten mitochondrial gene sequences, most of which were extracted from GenBank. Relaxed clock analyses of divergence times with 14 fossil-calibrated nodes suggest that living Primates last shared a common ancestor 71-63 Ma, and that divergences within both Strepsirrhini and Haplorhini are entirely post-Cretaceous. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction of non-avian dinosaurs played an important role in the diversification of placental mammals. Previous queries into primate historical biogeography have suggested Africa, Asia, Europe, or North America as the ancestral area of crown primates, but were based on methods that were coopted from phylogeny reconstruction. By contrast, we analyzed our molecular phylogeny with two methods that were developed explicitly for ancestral area reconstruction, and find support for the hypothesis that the most recent common ancestor of living Primates resided in Asia. Analyses of primate macroevolutionary dynamics provide support for a diversification rate increase in the late Miocene, possibly in response to elevated global mean temperatures, and are consistent with the fossil record. By contrast, diversification analyses failed to detect evidence for rate-shift changes near the Eocene-Oligocene boundary even though the fossil record provides clear evidence for a major turnover event ("Grande Coupure") at this time. Our results highlight the power and limitations of inferring diversification dynamics from molecular phylogenies, as well as the sensitivity of diversification analyses to different species concepts.

Colon cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer related deaths. Its impact on African Americans (AAs) is higher than in the general population both in the incidence and mortality from the disease. Colon cancer aggressiveness in AAs as well as non-frequent check-ups and follow up in this population have been proposed as ways to explain the observed discrepancies. These facts made the detection of early carcinogenesis markers in this population a priority.Here, we analyzed 50 colon adenomas from AA patients for both microsatellite instability (MSI) and the methylation status of SLC5A8 gene. This gene's product is involved in the transport of butyrate that has anti-proliferative properties through its effects on histone acetylation and gene expression. A proteomic analysis to check the expressed histones in adenoma and normal tissues was also performed.The analyzed samples displayed 82% (n = 41) methylation level of SLC5A8 gene in adenomas. The MSI-H (high) adenoma were about 18% (n = 9) while the rest were mostly MSS (microsatellite stable) with few MSI-L (Low). No association was found between SLC5A8 methylation and the MSI status. Also, there was no association between SLC5A8 methylation and the sex and age of the patients. However, there were more right sided adenomas with SLC5A8 methylation than the left sided ones. The proteomic analysis revealed distinct histone expression profiles between normal and adenoma tissues.SLC5A8 is highly methylated in AA colon adenomas which points to its potential use as a marker for early detection. The MSI rate is similar to that found in colon cancer tumors in AAs. These findings suggest that both processes stem from the same epigenetic and genetic events occurring at an early stage in colon carcinogenesis in AAs.

Background: This research was designed to carry out a meta-analysis in order to evaluate the dissimilarities in the stability of alveolar bone round dental implants and implant failure between platform switching (PS) and platform mating (PM). Methods: The investigation utilized a comprehensive search strategy that incorporated controlled vocabulary (MeSH) and free-text terms. This search was performed by two reviewers to identify published systematic reviews. Three major electronic databases, including Medline via PubMed, the Cochrane database, and Embase, were searched up to November 2023. Results: Initially, 466 articles were identified, but only twelve studies met the criteria for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The results showed that the pooled mean difference for reducing marginal bone loss (MBL) was −0.60 (95% confidence interval (CI), −0.91 to −0.28; p < 0.01). A sensitivity analysis was conducted by excluding a single study, which yielded a result of −0.46 (95% CI, −0.66 to −0.25; p < 0.01). The test for overall effect was significant (p < 0.01), and it revealed that there were significant differences between subgroups. However, the meta-analysis on implant failure did not show a significant difference between PS and PM implants. Conclusions: In conclusion, the study found that PS implants are more effective in reducing MBL compared to PM implants. Nevertheless, no significant difference was observed in the long-term effectiveness of reducing MBL and implant failure rate.

Background and Objectives: Tacrolimus is a macrolide lactone compound derived from the bacterium Streptomyces tsukubensis, widely known as an immunosuppressant. In basic research, the effects of tacrolimus on osteogenic differentiation have been tested using mesenchymal stem cells. In this study, tacrolimus’s effects on the cellular survival and osteogenic differentiation of stem cell spheroids were investigated. Materials and Methods: Concave microwells were used to form stem cell spheroids in the presence of tacrolimus at final concentrations of 0 μg/mL, 0.1 μg/mL, 1 μg/mL, 10 μg/mL, and 100 μg/mL. A microscope was used to test cellular vitality qualitatively, and an assay kit based on water-soluble tetrazolium salt was used to measure cellular viability quantitatively. Alkaline phosphatase activity and an anthraquinone dye test for measuring calcium deposits were used to assess osteogenic differentiation. To assess the expression of osteogenic differentiation, a quantitative polymerase chain reaction, Western blot, and RNA sequencing were performed. Results: Spheroids across all concentrations maintained a relatively uniform and spherical shape. Cell viability assay indicated that tacrolimus, up to a concentration of 100 μg/mL, did not significantly impair cell viability within spheroids cultured in osteogenic media. The increase in calcium deposition, particularly at lower concentrations of tacrolimus, points toward an enhancement in osteogenic differentiation. There was an increase in COL1A1 expression across all tacrolimus concentrations, as evidenced by the elevated mean and median values, which may indicate enhanced osteogenic activity. Conclusions: This study showed that tacrolimus does not significantly impact the viability of stem cell spheroids in osteogenic media, even at high concentrations. It also suggests that tacrolimus may enhance osteogenic differentiation, as indicated by increased calcium deposition and COL1A1 expression. These findings advance our understanding of tacrolimus’s potential roles in tissue repair, regeneration, and stem cell-based therapeutic applications.

Platelet-rich fibrin has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its remarkable capacity to accelerate the post-surgery wound healing process, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue repair. This study aimed to perform a meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of platelet-rich fibrin in mixture form with bone substitute, as a membrane, or in combination. A comprehensive search using a combination of controlled vocabulary (MeSH) and free-text terms was undertaken by two reviewers to identify published randomized clinical trials. Three major electronic databases (Medline via PubMed, Cochrane database, and Embase) and the clinical trials registry (clinicaltrials.gov) were searched up to 9 July 2023. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the pooled standardized mean difference of probing depth for platelet-rich fibrin was 0.61 (95% CI, 0.33 to 0.88). The results of the meta-analysis showed that the mean difference in clinical attachment level for platelet-rich fibrin was 0.68 (95% CI, 0.35 to 1.01). The results of the meta-analysis showed that the mean difference in bone fill for platelet-rich fibrin was 0.50 (95% CI, 0.23 to 0.78). In conclusion, the study found that platelet-rich fibrin was effective as adjunct to periodontal regeneration.

This study analyzed the sensitivities of carbon cycle to surface air temperature using the CO _2 flux data collected from June to September for six years (2014–2019) over a moist tundra site in Council, Alaska. The tundra ecosystem was a strong sink of carbon in June and July, a weak sink in August with rapidly decreasing photosynthesis, and a carbon source in September. The ecosystem respiration (Re) and gross primary production (GPP) were obtained from the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of eddy-covariance system. Both the Re and GPP increased with temperature, enhancing carbon emission and uptake during observation period. Notably, Re showed higher sensitivity to temperature than GPP did. This result means that as global warming continues, the increase in carbon release is greater than the increase in carbon uptake. In other words, the tundra ecosystem is expected to become a weaker carbon sink in June and July and a stronger source of carbon in September. Possible mechanism of different temperature sensitivities of Re and GPP as well as temporal variations of temperature sensitivities are suggested. Present results highlight the importance of understanding the temperature sensitivities of Re and GPP in various tundra ecosystems to accurately understand changes in the carbon cycle in the Arctic region.
