Purpose: We sought to determine the association between the pre-radiation therapy prostate-specific antigen (pre-RT PSA) 0.5 and RT failure in post-radical prostatectomy (post-RP) patients. Our study also investigated the prognostic factors for the failure of RT given concurrently with hormone therapy (HT) after RP. Materials and methods: We retrospectively reviewed our institutional RP data from July 2004 to November 2021. Patients without concurrent hormone therapy were excluded. Propensity score matching was performed. Kaplan–Meier (KM) curve analysis was employed for RT failure-free survival, overall survival (OS), and cancer-specific survival (CSS). Cox regression analysis was used for the RT failure hazard ratio (HR). Results: After propensity score matching, 193 patients were assigned to the pre-RT PSA ≥0.5 (high-P) arm, and 193 patients were assigned to the pre-RT PSA

Abstract Manipulating the grain boundary and chiral structure of enantiomorphic inorganic thermoelectric materials facilitates a new degree of freedom for enhancing thermoelectric energy conversion. Chiral twist mechanisms evolve by the screw dislocation phenomenon in the nanostructures; however, contributions of such chiral transport have been neglected for bulk crystals. Tellurium (Te) has a chiral trigonal crystal structure, high band degeneracy, and lattice anharmonicity for high thermoelectric performance. Here, Sb‐doped Te crystals are grown to minimize the severe grain boundary effects on carrier transport and investigate the interface of chiral Te matrix and embedded achiral Sb2Te3 precipitates, which induce unusual lattice twists. The low grain boundary scattering and conformational grain restructuring provide electrical‐favorable semicoherent interfaces. This maintains high electrical conductivity leading to a twofold increase in power factor compared to polycrystal samples. The embedded Sb2Te3 precipitates concurrently enable moderate phonon scattering leading to a remarkable decrease in lattice thermal conductivity and a high dimensionless figure of merit (zT) of 1.1 at 623 K. The crystal growth and chiral atomic reorientation unravel the emerging benefits of interface engineering as a crucial contributor to effectively enhancing carrier transport and minimizing phonon propagation in thermoelectric materials.

Abstract Chronic inflammation is a major cause of cancer worldwide. Interleukin 33 (IL-33) is a critical initiator of cancer-prone chronic inflammation; however, its induction mechanism by environmental causes of chronic inflammation is unknown. Herein, we demonstrate that Toll-like receptor (TLR)3/4-TBK1-IRF3 pathway activation links environmental insults to IL-33 induction in the skin and pancreas inflammation. An FDA-approved drug library screen identifies pitavastatin to effectively suppress IL-33 expression by blocking TBK1 membrane recruitment/activation through the mevalonate pathway inhibition. Accordingly, pitavastatin prevents chronic pancreatitis and its cancer sequela in an IL-33-dependent manner. The IRF3-IL-33 axis is highly active in chronic pancreatitis and its associated pancreatic cancer in humans. Interestingly, pitavastatin use correlates with a significantly reduced risk of chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer in patients. Our findings demonstrate that blocking the TBK1-IRF3-IL-33 signaling axis suppresses cancer-prone chronic inflammation. Statins present a safe and effective prophylactic strategy to prevent chronic inflammation and its cancer sequela.

The survival of motor neuron (SMN) protein is a major component of the pre-mRNA splicing machinery and is required for RNA metabolism. Although SMN has been considered a fundamental gene for the central nervous system, due to its relationship with neuromuscular diseases, such as spinal muscular atrophy, recent studies have also revealed the requirement of SMN in non-neuronal cells in the peripheral regions. Here, we report that the fibro-adipogenic progenitor subpopulation expressing Dpp4 (Dpp4+ FAPs) is required for the neuromuscular system. Furthermore, we also reveal that BRCA1-associated protein-1 (Bap1) is crucial for the stabilization of SMN in FAPs by preventing its ubiquitination-dependent degradation. Inactivation of Bap1 in FAPs decreased SMN levels and accompanied degeneration of the neuromuscular junction, leading to loss of motor neurons and muscle atrophy. Overexpression of the ubiquitination-resistant SMN variant, SMNK186R, in Bap1-null FAPs completely prevented neuromuscular degeneration. In addition, transplantation of Dpp4+ FAPs, but not Dpp4– FAPs, completely rescued neuromuscular defects. Our data reveal the crucial role of Bap1-mediated SMN stabilization in Dpp4+ FAPs for the neuromuscular system and provide the possibility of cell-based therapeutics to treat neuromuscular diseases.

Abstract Thermoelectric properties are frequently manipulated by introducing point defects into a matrix. However, these properties often change in unfavorable directions owing to the spontaneous formation of vacancies at high temperatures. Although it is crucial to maintain high thermoelectric performance over a broad temperature range, the suppression of vacancies is challenging since their formation is thermodynamically preferred. In this study, using PbTe as a model system, it is demonstrated that a high thermoelectric dimensionless figure of merit, zT ≈ 2.1 at 723 K, can be achieved by suppressing the vacancy formation via dopant balancing. Hole‐killer Te vacancies are suppressed by Ag doping because of the increased electron chemical potential. As a result, the re‐dissolution of Na2Te above 623 K can significantly increase the hole concentration and suppress the drop in the power factor. Furthermore, point defect scattering in material systems significantly reduces lattice thermal conductivity. The synergy between defect and carrier engineering offers a pathway for achieving a high thermoelectric performance by alleviating the power factor drop and can be utilized to enhance thermoelectric properties of thermoelectric materials.

A 75-year-old man with chronic cholangitis and a common bile duct stone that was not previously identified was admitted for right upper quadrant pain. Acute cholecystitis with cholangitis was suspected on abdominal computed tomography (CT); therefore, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with endonasal biliary drainage was performed. On admission day 5, hemobilia with rupture of two intrahepatic artery pseudoaneurysms was observed on follow-up abdominal CT. Coil embolization of the pseudoaneurysms was conducted using percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage. After several days, intrahepatic artery pseudoaneurysm rupture recurred and coil embolization through a percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage tract was conducted after failure of embolization via the hepatic artery due to previous coiling. After the second coil embolization, a common bile duct stone was removed, and the patient presented no complications during 4 months of follow-up. We report a case of intrahepatic artery pseudoaneurysm rupture without prior history of intervention involving the hepatobiliary system that was successfully managed using coil embolization through percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage.

Background: This study assessed the efficacy of pulmonary metastasectomy for synovial sarcoma in adult patients. Methods: Fifty patients, diagnosed with pulmonary metastasis from June 1990 to August 2010, were reviewed retrospectively. Twenty-eight patients underwent complete pulmonary metastasectomy, and their survival was evaluated. Age, sex, time to metastatic progression, laterality, number of tumors, size of largest nodule, and number of metastasectomies were analyzed as potential prognostic factors. Results: I n all, 2 9 patients underwent at least one pulmonary metastasectomy, and 51 resections were performed. One intraoperative mortality occurred, and the 5-year survival rate was 58.4%. Bilateral metastases and early metastatic progression were associated with poor survival in multivariate analyses. Conclusion: Surgical resection can be a good option for treating pulmonary metastasis in patients with synovial sarcoma. Repeated resection was feasible with low mortality and morbidity.

This study investigated the chemical characteristics and microbial population during incubation of four kinds of aerated compost teas based on oriental medicinal herbs compost, vermicompost, rice straw compost, and mixtures of three composts (MOVR). It aimed to determine the effects of the aerated compost tea (ACT) based on MOVR on the growth promotion of red leaf lettuce, soybean and sweet corn. Findings showed that the pH level and EC of the compost tea slightly increased based on the incubation time except for rice straw compost tea. All compost teas except for oriental medicinal herbs and rice straw compost tea contained more NO⁻₃-N than NH⁺₄-N. Plate counts of bacteria and fungi were significantly higher than the initial compost in ACT. Microbial communities of all ACT were predominantly bacteria. The dominant bacterial genera were analyzed as Bacillus (63.0%), Ochrobactrum (13.0%), Spingomonas (6.0%) and uncultured bacterium (4.0%) by 16S rDNA analysis. The effect of four concentrations, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.8% MOVR on the growth of red leaf lettuce, soybean and sweet corn was also studied in the greenhouse. The red leaf lettuce with 0.4% MOVR had the most effective concentration on growth parameters in foliage part. However, 0.8% MOVR significantly promoted the growth of root and shoot of both soybean and sweet corn. The soybean treated with higher MOVR concentration was more effective in increasing the root nodule formation by 7.25 times than in the lower MOVR concentrations Results indicated that ACT could be used as liquid nutrient fertilizer with active microorganisms for culture of variable crops under organic farming condition.

c-Cbl, a RING-type ubiquitin E3 ligase, downregulates various receptor tyrosine kinases (e.g., epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)), leading to inhibition of cell proliferation. Moreover, patients with myeloid neoplasm frequently harbor c-Cbl mutations, implicating the role of c-Cbl as a tumor suppressor. Recently, we have shown that c-Cbl downregulates αPix-mediated cell migration and invasion, and the lack of c-Cbl in the rat C6 and human A172 glioma cells is responsible for their malignant behavior. Here, we showed that c-Cbl exon skipping occurs in the glioma cells and the brain tissues from glioblastoma patients lacking c-Cbl. This exon skipping resulted in generation of two types of c-Cbl isoforms: type I lacking exon-9 and type II lacking exon-9 and exon-10. However, the c-Cbl isoforms in the cells and tissues could not be detected as they were rapidly degraded by proteasome. Consequently, C6 and A172 cells showed sustained EGFR activation. However, no splice site mutation was found in the region from exon-7 to exon-11 of the c-Cbl gene in C6 cells and a glioblastoma tissue lacking c-Cbl. In addition, c-Cbl exon skipping could be induced when cells transfected with a c-Cbl mini-gene were grown to high density or under hypoxic stress. These results suggest that unknown alternations (e.g., mutation) of splicing machinery in C6 and A172 cells and the glioblastoma brain tissues are responsible for the deleterious exon skipping. Collectively, these findings indicate that the c-Cbl exon skipping contributes to human glioma and its malignant behavior.

Category: Midfoot/Forefoot Introduction/Purpose: Even though stiffness of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (1MTP) is not a common complication, reduced dorsiflexion range of motion at the 1MTP after surgery for hallux valgus was reported as a complication. However, few clinical studies have investigated this issue and no clinical resolution has been reached thus far. We hypothesized that tightness of the gastrocnemius-plantar aponeurosis complex is one of the factors that limits the extension of 1MTP after hallux valgus surgery. Thus, an additional procedure of the plantar aponeurosis release during hallux valgus surgery may improve the range of extension at 1MTP. The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of plantar aponeurosis release in improving the range of extension when a limitation is detected after hallux valgus surgery. Methods: Thirteen patients (17 feet) with limited 1MTP extension after hallux valgus surgery, underwent an additional procedure of plantar aponeurosis release. The inclusion criterion was limitation of 1MTP extension showed more than 15 degrees difference between knee extension and flexion position, measured after completing all procedures of the hallux valgus surgery. The passive range of 1MTP extension was evaluated by a goniometer while the first metatarsal head was supported with a palm, assuming a weightbearing position with knee extension and flexion, after completing all procedures of the hallux valgus surgery (Barouk test). A silfverskiold test was performed in all cases preoperatively. The weightbearing dorsoplantar and lateral radiographs of the foot were performed to measure the hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle, distal metatarsal articular angle, and the talo-first metatarsal angle. A method for stably purifying a functional dye, phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis was developed by a hexane extraction process combined with high pressure. This was necessary because this dye is known to be very unstable during normal extraction processes. The purification yield of this method was estimated as 10.2%, whose value is 3%–5% higher than is the case from another conventional separation method using phosphate buffer. The isolated phycocyanin from this process also showed the highest purity of 0.909 based on absorbance of 2.104 at 280 nm and 1.912 at 620 nm. Two subunits of phycocyanin namely α-phycocyanin (18.4 kDa) and β-phycocyanin (21.3 kDa) were found to remain from the original mixtures after being extracted, based on SDS-PAGE analysis, clearly demonstrating that this process can stably extract phycocyanin and is not affected by extraction solvent, temperature, etc. The stability of the extracted phycocyanin was also confirmed by comparing its DPPH (α,α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl) scavenging activity, showing 83% removal of oxygen free radicals. This activity was about 15% higher than that of commercially available standard phycocyanin, which implies that the combined extraction method can yield relatively intact chromoprotein through absence of degradation. The results were achieved because the low temperature and high pressure extraction effectively disrupted the cell membrane of Spirulina platensis and degraded less the polypeptide subunits of phycocyanin (which is a temperature/pH-sensitive chromoprotein) as well as increasing the extraction yield.

Purpose. To evaluate the efficacy of autologous tenon grafting combined with conjunctival flap as a treatment for scleromalacia or scleral thinning after pterygium excision without any additional donor graft tissue. Methods. Twenty-six cases underwent autologous advanced tenon grafting combined with sliding or rotating conjunctival flap for scleromalacia after pterygium surgery ranging from 2 years to 30 years. The extent of scleral defect measured from 2.0 mm to 6.8 mm in diameter. The cosmetic outcome was defined as complete resolution of scleromalacia or completely conjunctival reepithelialization and firm adhesion between subtenon and scleral tissue over scleral thinning without significant complications. Results. All cases achieved the covering of conjunctival and tenon or subtenon tissue over scleromalacia or scleral thinning with this procedure. Preoperative pain, inflammation, and choroidal exposure disappeared after surgery. Immediate postoperative complications, such as large wound dehiscence or reopening of the scleral wound, did not occur in any of the patients. There were no significant clinical complications during the mean postoperative follow-up period of 14.17 months in all cases. Conclusions. We obtained excellent outcome with fewer complications after autologous advanced tenon graft and conjunctival flap, without an additional donor graft, in scleromalacia or scleral thinning caused by previous pterygium excision.

This paper is concerned with exact null controllability analysis of nonlinear KdV-Burgers equation with memory. The proposed approach relies upon regression tool to prove controllability property of linearized KdV-Burgers equation via Carleman estimates. The control is distributed along with subdomain ω⊂Ω and the external control acts on the key role of observability inequality with memory. This description finally showed the exact null controllability guaranteeing the stability.
