The study of Afghanistan has been more limited than that of other areas of the Moslem world. Afghanistan tends to fall outside the neat categories of Middle East, South Asia or Central Asia, utilised by historians and social scientists. Indeed, up until the nineteenth century, the area was only rarely penetrated by western travellers or scholars and many were hampered in their investigations by a hostile or inaccessible situation. The accounts of this period were often written by European army officers or travellers and such sources, some of which have been used in the present study, need to be read with caution. An awareness of the writer's backgrounds, training and motives is important, because some reports are biased and perhaps not as reliable as one would wish. A more accurate picture of this period could possibly be obtained by consulting archives in Kabul, and it is hoped that this will be carried out at a future date. With the increase of foreign political and economic influence in the area, Afghanistan in the twentieth century has been more open to Western ethnographers and other social scientists. These have been mainly American, Russian, German, French and Danish and the Central Asian Research Centre in London has assisted researchers in collecting and translating various works. However, our general anthropological knowledge of this area remains limited and it is notable that women anthropologists have undertaken little study in Afghanistan. The present study is not based on fieldwork and therefore attempts to examine one ethnic group in Afghanistan with the help of library materials available in Britain. The Hazaras are a minority ethnic group, with a history of slavery and oppression, who have attracted the attention of foreign ethnographers because of their supposed Mongol descent. They are the main religious heterodox group in Afghanistan and this fact appears to have considerable importance in their relationship with the ruling Pashtuns. Accordingly I have attempted here to outline some of the main features of ethnic relations in Afghanistan, concentrating particularly on the Hazara-Pashtun relationship as it has developed or changed in the last hundred years. This discussion may indicate general directions for the analysis of ethnicity and the ethnic group. Sources for this thesis were found in two main areas. Firstly secondary sources on Afghanistan in recent years were available in libraries in Oxford and London. These were mainly English and American, thus omitting much possibly relevant Russian material, although some Russian articles in translation were available from the Central Asian Research Centre. Primary sources and rare volumes were consulted at the India Office archives, which forms a valuable repository for information received through British sources in India and Afghanistan. Chapter One of the thesis provides an introduction to Afghan society, outlining the contemporary environmental and social divisions. In Chapter Two, recent ethnography is utilised to present a description of Hazara society of the last thirty years. Chapter Three takes the historical viewpoint of discussing the various theories of Hazara ethnogenesis and also describes the state of Hazara society in the nineteenth century, when the forces of European imperialism and Afghan nationalism were already beginning to impinge on the isolation of the Hazaras and to effect changes in ethnic relations. The fourth chapter suggests certain results of these changes; the Hazara resistance to the rise of the Sunni state and the way in which sectarian allegiances were mobilised as political forces. One particular area where ethic relations have been crucial in an economic and possibly political sense is in the relationship between the sedentary Hazaras and the Pashtun nomads, and this is discussed in Chapter Five. Chapter six finally attempts to review these developments described, in the light of contemporary theories of ethnicity. Further research and fieldwork would enable a more definitive anthropological study to be undertaken, but the present study limits itself to describing the changes in ethnic relations and suggesting points for more detailed investigation.

Aims This study evaluates risk factors influencing fracture characteristics for postoperative periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFFs) around cemented stems in total hip arthroplasty. Methods Data were collected for PFF patients admitted to eight UK centres between 25 May 2006 and 1 March 2020. Radiographs were assessed for Unified Classification System (UCS) grade and AO/OTA type. Statistical comparisons investigated relationships by age, gender, and stem fixation philosophy (polished taper-slip (PTS) vs composite beam (CB)). The effect of multiple variables was estimated using multinomial logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Surgical treatment (revision vs fixation) was compared by UCS grade and AO/OTA type. Results A total of 584 cases were included. Median age was 79.1 years (interquartile range 72.0 to 86.0), 312 (53.6%) patients were female, and 495 (85.1%) stems were PTS. The commonest UCS grade was type B1 (278, 47.6%). The most common AO/OTA type was spiral (352, 60.3%). Metaphyseal split fractures occurred only with PTS stems with an incidence of 10.1%. Male sex was associated with a five-fold reduction in odds of a type C fracture (OR 0.22 (95% CI 0.12 to 0.41); p < 0.001) compared to a type B fracture. CB stems were associated with significantly increased odds of transverse fracture (OR 9.51 (95% CI 3.72 to 24.34); p < 0.001) and wedge fracture (OR 3.72 (95% CI 1.16 to 11.95); p = 0.027) compared to PTS stems. Both UCS grade and AO/OTA type differed significantly (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively) between the revision and fixation groups but a similar proportion of B1 fractures underwent revision compared to fixation (45.3% vs 50.6%). Conclusion The commonest fracture types are B1 and spiral fractures. PTS stems are exclusively associated with metaphyseal split fractures, but their incidence is low. Males have lower odds of UCS grade C fractures compared to females. CB stems have higher odds of bending type fractures (transverse and wedge) compared to PTS stems. At the historic Shelter Island Conference on the Foundations of Quantum Mechanics in 1947, Willis Lamb reported an unexpected feature in the fine structure of atomic hydrogen: a separation of the 2S1/2 and 2P1/2 states1. The observation of this separation, now known as the Lamb shift, marked an important event in the evolution of modern physics, inspiring others to develop the theory of quantum electrodynamics2–5. Quantum electrodynamics also describes antimatter, but it has only recently become possible to synthesize and trap atomic antimatter to probe its structure. Mirroring the historical development of quantum atomic physics in the twentieth century, modern measurements on anti-atoms represent a unique approach for testing quantum electrodynamics and the foundational symmetries of the standard model. Here we report measurements of the fine structure in the n = 2 states of antihydrogen, the antimatter counterpart of the hydrogen atom. Using optical excitation of the 1S–2P Lyman-α transitions in antihydrogen6, we determine their frequencies in a magnetic field of 1 tesla to a precision of 16 parts per billion. Assuming the standard Zeeman and hyperfine interactions, we infer the zero-field fine-structure splitting (2P1/2–2P3/2) in antihydrogen. The resulting value is consistent with the predictions of quantum electrodynamics to a precision of 2 per cent. Using our previously measured value of the 1S–2S transition frequency6,7, we find that the classic Lamb shift in antihydrogen (2S1/2–2P1/2 splitting at zero field) is consistent with theory at a level of 11 per cent. Our observations represent an important step towards precision measurements of the fine structure and the Lamb shift in the antihydrogen spectrum as tests of the charge–parity–time symmetry8 and towards the determination of other fundamental quantities, such as the antiproton charge radius9,10, in this antimatter system., Precision measurements of the 1S–2P transition in antihydrogen that take into account the standard Zeeman and hyperfine effects confirm the predictions of quantum electrodynamics.

Background The first step in branched‐chain amino acid (BCAA) catabolism is catalyzed by the two BCAA transferase isoenzymes, cytoplasmic branched‐chain amino acid transferase (BCAT) 1 and mitochondrial BCAT2. Defects in the second step of BCAA catabolism cause Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD), a condition which has been far more extensively investigated. Here, we studied the consequences of BCAT2 deficiency, an ultra‐rare condition in humans. Methods and results We present genetic, clinical and functional data in five individuals from four different families with homozygous or compound heterozygousBCAT2mutations which were all detected following abnormal biochemical profile results or familial mutation segregation studies. We demonstrate that BCAT2 deficiency has a recognizable biochemical profile with raised plasma BCAAs and, in contrast with MSUD, low‐normal branched‐chain keto acids (BCKAs) with undetectable L‐allo‐isoleucine. Interestingly, unlike in MSUD, none of the individuals with BCAT2 deficiency developed acute encephalopathy even with exceptionally high BCAA levels. We observed wide‐ranging clinical phenotypes in individuals with BCAT2 deficiency. While one adult was apparently asymptomatic, three individuals had presented with developmental delay and autistic features. We show that the biochemical characteristics of BCAT2 deficiency may be amenable to protein‐restricted diet and that early treatment may improve outcome in affected individuals. Conclusions BCAT2 deficiency is an inborn error of BCAA catabolism. At present, it is unclear whether developmental delay and autism are parts of the variable phenotypic spectrum of this condition or coincidental. Further studies will be required to explore this.

A simple method for vapour-phase deposition of a silane surfactant is presented, which produces tuneable homeotropic anchoring in liquid crystals. Both the zenithal anchoring energy and surface slip are measured by fitting to the latching threshold versus pulse width characteristic of a zenithal bistable nematic liquid crystal device based on a deep, submicron grating. The method is shown to give microscopic anchoring strength between 5 × 10⁻⁵ and 2 × 10⁻⁴ J/m², with a surface slip of about 100 nm. The silanated surfaces are characterized using atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which show a direct relationship between the surface coverage of silane groups and the resulting anchoring energy.

Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC) is a progressive and life limiting autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in either the NPC1 or NPC2 gene. Mutations in these genes are associated with abnormal endosomal-lysosomal trafficking, resulting in the accumulation of multiple tissue specific lipids in the lysosomes. The clinical spectrum of NPC disease ranges from a neonatal rapidly progressive fatal disorder to an adult-onset chronic neurodegenerative disease. The age of onset of the first (beyond 3 months of life) neurological symptom may predict the severity of the disease and determines life expectancy.NPC has an estimated incidence of ~ 1: 100,000 and the rarity of the disease translate into misdiagnosis, delayed diagnosis and barriers to good care. For these reasons, we have developed clinical guidelines that define standard of care for NPC patients, foster shared care arrangements between expert centres and family physicians, and empower patients. The information contained in these guidelines was obtained through a systematic review of the literature and the experiences of the authors in their care of patients with NPC. We adopted the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation (AGREE II) system as method of choice for the guideline development process. We made a series of conclusive statements and scored them according to level of evidence, strengths of recommendations and expert opinions. These guidelines can inform care providers, care funders, patients and their carers of best practice of care for patients with NPC. In addition, these guidelines have identified gaps in the knowledge that must be filled by future research. It is anticipated that the implementation of these guidelines will lead to a step change in the quality of care for patients with NPC irrespective of their geographical location.

The ALPHA experiment at CERN is designed to produce and trap antihydrogen to the purpose of making a precise comparison with hydrogen. The basic technique consists of driving an antihydrogen resonance which will cause the antiatom to leave the trap and annihilate. The main background to antihydrogen detection is due to cosmic rays. When an experimental cycle extends for several minutes, while the number of trapped antihydrogen remains fixed, background rejection can become challenging. Machine learning methods have been employed in ALPHA for several years, leading to a dramatic reduction of the background contamination. This allowed ALPHA to perform the first laser spectroscopy experiment on antihydrogen.

With aging, there is a decline in cardiac function accompanying increasing risk of arrhythmias. These effects are likely to be mechanistically associated with age-associated changes in calcium regulation within cardiac myocytes. Previous studies suggest that lifelong exercise can potentially reduce age-associated changes in the heart. Although exercise itself is associated with changes in cardiac function, little is known about the interactions of aging and exercise with respect to myocyte calcium regulation. To investigate this, adult (12 months) and old (24 months) C57/Bl6 mice were trained using moderate-intensity treadmill running. In response to 10 weeks’ training, comparable cardiac hypertrophic responses were observed, although aging independently associated with additional cardiac hypertrophy. Old animals also showed increased L- and T-type calcium channels, the sodium–calcium exchange, sarcoendoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase, and collagen (by 50%, 92%, 66%, 88%, and 113% respectively). Short-term exercise training increased D-type and T-type calcium channels in old animals only, whereas an increase in sodium–calcium exchange was seen only in adult animals. Long-term (12 months) training generally opposed the effects of aging. Significant hypertrophy remained in long-term trained old animals, but levels of sarcoendoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase, sodium–calcium exchange, and collagen were not significantly different from those found in the adult trained animals.

The ALPHA project at the CERN AD is testing fundamental symmetries between matter and antimatter using trapped antihydrogen atoms. The spectrum of the antihydrogen atom may be compared to ordinary hydrogen where it has been measured very precisely. CPT conservation, which underpins our current theoretical framework, requires equality of the masses and charges of matter and its antimatter partners, so antihydrogen spectroscopy presents a path to precision CPT tests. I will discuss the techniques used by ALPHA to trap more than 8000 antihydrogen atoms in 2016, and interrogate them for 600s. The 1S-2S transition in antihydrogen has been observed for the first time, and it agrees with its hydrogen counterpart within an uncertainty of 400 kHz or 0.2 ppb. The charge of the antihydrogen atom has been bounded below [Formula: see text]. A value of 1420.4 0.5MHz for the hyperfine splitting has been obtained from observation of the positron spin resonance spectrum.

This study investigates linkages between personal competencies and leadership style among female small and micro business owners. Although prior research suggests that leadership style is shaped according to a leader's traits and abilities, few empirical studies corroborate this, particularly among female owners. Using survey data from the North West of England, Yorkshire, and North Wales, we reveal that transformational leadership style is the most dominant style adopted, and it is linked to perceived human and personal competencies as well as entrepreneurial competencies.
