Exposure to high environmental temperature is detrimental to health through multiple pathways. This paper describes disparities in school-based high-temperature exposure at metropolitan schools in the United States. Using school location and sociodemographic data from the National Center for Education Statistics, neighborhood data from the US Census Bureau, and land surface temperature (LST) data from the Aqua Earth-observing satellite mission, we find that for every 10% more Black or Hispanic residents in the neighborhood, schools have LST 0.25 °C and 0.38 °C hotter, respectively. When the Black or Hispanic student population is greater than the neighborhood population, LST is an additional 0.20 °C and 0.40 °C for each 10% increase in students over neighborhood population, respectively. Black and Hispanic students are overrepresented in the hottest schools, making up 58.7% of students in the hottest 20% of schools, compared to only 30.0% of students in the coolest 20% of schools., (© 2024. The relationship between racial/ethnic residential segregation and physical activity (PA) remains unclear with both positive and negative associations between segregation and PA recently reported. We aimed to examine the relationship between county-level residential segregation and total daily PA and domain-specific PA and whether these associations varied by gender. Participants (N = 2625, mean age [SD] = 45.2 [15.4]) were recruited from the AmeriSpeak panel who completed up to two Activities Completed over Time in 24 Hours (ACT24) previous day recalls in 2019. PA outcomes were created for the following: (1) light PA (LPA), (2) moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), (3) total active time, and (4) domain-specific PA, including leisure, work, household, transport, personal, and other activities. County-level residential segregation based on isolation. Weighted generalized linear models were used to examine the relationship between county-level segregation and each PA outcome, controlling for age, gender, race/ethnicity, income, employment, body mass index, county-level poverty, and census region. Overall, results showed no association between county-level residential segregation and LPA, MVPA, total active time, and domain-specific PA among NH Black and Hispanic populations. Among NH Black females, greater residential segregation was associated with more total hours/day of activity (β = 3.54, 95% CI [0.23, 6.85]). Only NH Black females living in segregated neighborhoods had more total active time. Additionally, it is important to acknowledge that these relationships may vary among NH Black and Hispanic populations. Future studies should examine the interaction between segregation and a broader range of individual, contextual, and environmental factors in relation to PA and domain-specific PA., (© 2024. Importance: As a risk factor for conditions related to the microbiome, understanding the role of SVI on microbiome diversity may assist in identifying public health implications for microbiome research. Here we found, using a sub-sample of the Human Microbiome Project phase 1 cohort, that SVI was linked to microbiome diversity across body sites and that SVI may influence race/ethnicity-based differences in diversity. Our findings, build on the current knowledge regarding the role of human geography in microbiome research, suggest that measures of geographic social vulnerability be considered as additional contextual factors when exploring microbiome alpha diversity., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Developing the knowledge on surfactant interfacial phenomena is highly valuable for the advancement of technological, commercial, and industrial products, as these applications often rely on interfacial and colloidal chemistry. Zwitterionic surfactants are a less toxic alternative to standard charged surfactants. With both positively charged quaternary ammonium and negatively charged sulfonate constituents, zwitterionic DDAPS can have diverse interfacial interactions with various coadditives. In this work, we investigate DDAPS adsorption to a planar oil/water interface and its stabilization of oil-in-water nanoemulsions. By studying both interfacial geometries with surface-specific, nonlinear spectroscopy, we gain deeper insights and a molecular perspective into DDAPS's behavior in the presence of various salts and cosurfactants. From an application standpoint, zwitterionic surfactants are often mixed with other chemicals or used in an environment with pre-existing chemicals (e.g., ocean water during oil remediation). Thus, it is important to understand how such coadditives alter DDAPS's behavior and its performance as an emulsifier. Our results show that DDAPS is nearly uninfluenced by coadditives at a planar oil/water interface, but the identical coadditives are crucial for DDAPS to form and stabilize nanoemulsions. Additionally, the surfactant packing properties vary between interfaces as well as coadditives, indicating that certain interactions with the DDAPS headgroup are stronger and play a greater role in tuning DDAPS's interfacial behavior.

Environments that make it easier for people to incorporate physical activity into their daily life may help to reduce high rates of cardiometabolic conditions. Local zoning codes are a policy and planning tool to create more walkable and bikeable environments. This study evaluated relationships between active living-oriented zoning code environments and cardiometabolic conditions (body mass index, hyperlipidemia, hypertension). The study used county identifiers to link electronic health record and other administrative data for a sample of patients utilizing primary care services between 2012 and 2016 with county-aggregated zoning code data and built environment data. The analytic sample included 7,441,991 patients living in 292 counties in 44 states. Latent class analysis was used to summarize municipal- and unincorporated county-level data on seven zoning provisions (e.g., sidewalks, trails, street connectivity, mixed land use), resulting in classes that differed in strength of the zoning provisions. Based on the probability of class membership, counties were categorized as one of four classes. Linear and logistic regression models estimated cross-sectional associations with each cardiometabolic condition. Models were fit separately for youth (aged 5-19), adults (aged 20-59), and older adults (aged 60+). Little evidence was found that body mass index in youth, adults, or older adults or the odds of hyperlipidemia or hypertension in adults or older adults differed according to the strength of active living-oriented zoning. While many studies have investigated synergic interactions between surfactants in mixed systems, understanding possible competitive behaviors between interfacial components of binary surfactant systems is necessary for the optimized efficacy of applications dependent on surface properties. Such is the focus of these studies in which the surface behavior of a binary surfactant mixture containing nonionic (Span-80) and anionic (AOT) components adsorbing to the oil/water interface was investigated with vibrational sum-frequency (VSF) spectroscopy and surface tensiometry experimental methods. Time-dependent spectroscopic studies reveal that while both nonionic and anionic surfactants initially adsorb to the interface, anionic surfactants desorb over time as the nonionic surfactant continues to adsorb. Concentration studies that vary the ratio of Span-80 to AOT in bulk solution show that the nonionic surfactant preferentially adsorbs to the oil/water interface over the anionic surfactant. These studies have important implications for applications in which mixed surfactant systems are used to alter interfacial properties, such as pharmaceuticals, industrial films, and environmental remediation.

Thermal tolerance limits in animals are often thought to be related to temperature and thermal variation in their environment. Recently, there has been a focus on studying upper thermal limits due to the likelihood for climate change to expose more animals to higher temperatures and potentially extinction. Organisms living in underground environments experience reduced temperatures and thermal variation in comparison to species living in surface habitats, but how these impact their thermal tolerance limits are unclear. In this study, we compare the thermal critical maximum (CTmax) of two subterranean diving beetles (Dytiscidae) to that of three related surface-dwelling species. Our results show that subterranean species have a lower CTmax (38.3-39.0°C) than surface species (42.0-44.5°C). The CTmax of subterranean species is ∼10°C higher than the highest temperature recorded within the aquifer. Groundwater temperature varied between 18.4°C and 28.8°C, and changes with time, depth and distance across the aquifer. Seasonal temperature fluctuations were 0.5°C at a single point, with the maximum heating rate being ∼1000x lower (0.008°C/hour) than that recorded in surface habitats (7.98°C/hour). For surface species, CTmax was 7-10°C higher than the maximum temperature in their habitats, with daily fluctuations from ∼1°C to 16°C and extremes of 6.9°C and 34.9°C. These findings suggest that subterranean dytiscid beetles are unlikely to reach their CTmax with a predicted warming of 1.3-5.1°C in the region by 2090. Many aquatic insects use bubbles on the body surface to store and supply O 2 for their dives. There are two types of bubbles: air stores, which store O 2 gained from air at the surface, and gas gills that allow passive extraction of O 2 from water. Many insects using air stores and gas gills return to the surface to replenish their bubbles and, therefore, their requirement for O 2 influences dive behaviour. In this study, we investigate gas exchange and dive behaviour in the diving beetle Platynectes decempunctatus that uses a sub-elytral air store and a small compressible gas gill. We measure the PO 2 within the air store during tethered dives, as well as the amount of O 2 exchanged during surfacing events. Buoyancy experiments monitor the volume of gas in the gas gill and how it changes during dives. We also directly link O 2 -consumption rate at three temperatures (10, 15 and 20 °C) with dive duration, surfacing frequency and movement activity. These data are incorporated in a gas exchange model, which shows that the small gas gill of P. decempunctatus contributes less than 10% of the total O 2 used during the dive, while up to 10% is supplied by cutaneous uptake., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Nanoemulsions, nanosized droplets of oil, are easily stabilized by interfacial electric fields from the adsorption of ionic surfactants. While mean-field theories can be used to describe the impact of these interfacial fields on droplet stability, the influence of these fields on the adsorption properties of ionic surfactants is not well-understood. In this work, we study the adsorption of the surfactant sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT) at the nanoemulsion and planar oil-water interfaces and investigate how salt-induced charge-screening affects AOT adsorption. In the absence of salt, vibrational sum-frequency scattering spectroscopy measurements reveal the Δ G ads and the maximum surface density is the same for AOT at the hexadecane nanoemulsion surface as at the planar hexadecane-H 2 O interface. Upon the addition of NaCl, an increase in AOT surface density is detected at both interfaces, indicating that repulsive electrostatic interactions between AOT monomers are the dominant force limiting surfactant adsorption at both interfaces. The bulky alkyl chains of AOT molecules cause our observations in this study to differ from those found in previous studies investigating the adsorption of linear-chain ionic surfactants to the nanoemulsion surface. These results provide necessary information for understanding factors limiting the adsorption of ionic surfactants to nanodroplet surfaces and highlight the need for further studies into the adsorption properties of more complex macromolecules at nanoemulsion surfaces.

Emerging zoonotic diseases, such as COVID-19, exist at the intersection of human health and the environment. Public interest and support are required to maximize the effectiveness of policies to combat the current pandemic and prevent future outbreaks of zoonoses. Here, we use internet search data from the United States to investigate changes in public information seeking about topics at the intersection of health and the environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using breakpoint detection methods, we identify sharp increases in interest for 'wildlife trade', 'bats', and 'pangolins' in the early stages of the pandemic (on Jan. 12, Jan. 19, and Jan. 26, 2020, respectively). Network analyses also revealed increasing connectivity between terms related to human health and the environment, as well as the emergence of novel search terms pointing to a greater interest in wildlife trade and consumption. During the pandemic, the network connectivity between coronavirus keywords and conservation keywords increased, which we measured using the number of unique connections (edge connectivity, k' (G)) and the number of simple paths (Sp) between keywords. Both measures of network connectivity increased between 'coronavirus' and 'bats' or 'pangolins' (Δk' (G) = 1, ΔSp = 37), and between 'coronavirus' and 'conservation' (Δk' (G) = 1, ΔSp = 160). These findings suggest that policy and outreach efforts aimed at engaging public interest in intersectional approaches to pandemic prevention (eg: One Health, Planetary Health), may be able to take advantage of increases in public information seeking following catalyzing events during the pandemic. Objective: Despite their high rate of labor force participation, African American women earn less and are overrepresented in service jobs that tend to have fewer benefits, longer work hours, and less flexibility. The aim of our study was to examine associations between work-related daily hassles and energy balance behaviors among female African American workers., Design: A secondary analysis of a 7-day intensive longitudinal study using ecological momentary assessment (EMA)., Setting: Metropolitan area of Chicago, Illinois, United States; July 2012 through January 2013., Participants: A convenience sample of 70 female African American workers., Methods: EMA was used to collect information over seven days on work hassles and energy balance behaviors: empty calorie food intake; moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA); sedentary behavior; sleep duration; and sleep disturbance. Within-person associations between daily work hassles and each of these daily energy balance behaviors were analyzed using person fixed-effects regression., Results: A total of 334 person-day observations from 70 female African American workers were included in the final analysis. Reporting at least one daily work hassle was associated with same-day higher empty calorie food intake (OR: 2.2, 95% CI: 1.0, 4.6) and more daily minutes of sedentary behavior (b: 35.8, 95% CI; .2, 71.3). However, no significant associations were found between prior-day work hassles and either food intake or sedentary behavior. Daily work hassles were not related to MVPA, sleep duration, or sleep disturbance., Conclusions: Our study showed that daily work hassles were associated with female African American workers' empty calorie food intake and sedentary behaviors. Background: Repetitive DNA sequences, including transposable elements (TEs) and tandemly repeated satellite DNA (satDNAs), collectively called the "repeatome", are found in high proportion in organisms across the Tree of Life. Grasshoppers have large genomes, averaging 9 Gb, that contain a high proportion of repetitive DNA, which has hampered progress in assembling reference genomes. Here we combined linked-read genomics with transcriptomics to assemble, characterize, and compare the structure of repetitive DNA sequences in four chromosomal races of the morabine grasshopper Vandiemenella viatica species complex and determine their contribution to genome evolution., Results: We obtained linked-read genome assemblies of 2.73-3.27 Gb from estimated genome sizes of 4.26-5.07 Gb DNA per haploid genome of the four chromosomal races of V. viatica. These constitute the third largest insect genomes assembled so far. Combining complementary annotation tools and manual curation, we found a large diversity of TEs and satDNAs, constituting 66 to 75% per genome assembly. A comparison of sequence divergence within the TE classes revealed massive accumulation of recent TEs in all four races (314-463 Mb per assembly), indicating that their large genome sizes are likely due to similar rates of TE accumulation. Transcriptome sequencing showed more biased TE expression in reproductive tissues than somatic tissues, implying permissive transcription in gametogenesis. Out of 129 satDNA families, 102 satDNA families were shared among the four chromosomal races, which likely represent a diversity of satDNA families in the ancestor of the V. viatica chromosomal races. Notably, 50 of these shared satDNA families underwent differential proliferation since the recent diversification of the V. viatica species complex., Conclusion: This in-depth annotation of the repeatome in morabine grasshoppers provided new insights into the genome evolution of Orthoptera. Our TEs analysis revealed a massive recent accumulation of TEs equivalent to the size of entire Drosophila genomes, which likely explains the large genome sizes in grasshoppers. Despite an overall high similarity of the TE and satDNA diversity between races, the patterns of TE expression and satDNA proliferation suggest rapid evolution of grasshopper genomes on recent timescales.

Dynamic measurements of steroid hormones in vivo are critical, but steroid sensing is currently limited by the availability of specific molecular recognition elements due to the chemical similarity of these hormones. In this work, a new, self-templating synthetic approach is applied using corona phase molecular recognition (CoPhMoRe) targeting the steroid family of molecules to produce near infrared fluorescent, implantable sensors. A key limitation of CoPhMoRe has been its reliance on library generation for sensor screening. This problem is addressed with a self-templating strategy of polymer design, using the examples of progesterone and cortisol sensing based on a styrene and acrylic acid copolymer library augmented with an acrylated steroid. The pendant steroid attached to the corona backbone is shown to self-template the phase, providing a unique CoPhMoRE design strategy with high efficacy. The resulting sensors exhibit excellent stability and reversibility upon repeated analyte cycling. It is shown that molecular recognition using such constructs is viable even in vivo after sensor implantation into a murine model by employing a poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel and porous cellulose interface to limit nonspecific absorption. Objective: Improving neighborhood walkability has been proposed as a policy intervention to reduce obesity. The objective of this study was to evaluate longitudinal relationships between neighborhood walkability and body weight among adults living in large urban areas., Methods: In this retrospective longitudinal study of United States military veterans using Department of Veterans Affairs health care, Veterans Affairs clinical and administrative data (2007-2014) were linked to environmental measures constructed from public (2006-2014) and proprietary (2008-2014) sources, and linear regression models with person fixed effects were used to estimate associations between walkability and BMI among 758,434 men and 70,319 women aged 20 to 80 years in 2009 to 2014., Results: Neighborhood walkability was associated with small reductions in BMI. Effects were most pronounced among men aged 30 to 49 and 50 to 64. For women, differences were largest in the two youngest age groups, 20 to 29 and 30 to 49, though only estimates for all women combined were statistically significant. For women aged 30 to 49, effect sizes grew when the sample was limited to those who remained in the same neighborhood during the entire follow-up period., Conclusions: Investments in the built environment to improve walkability may be a useful strategy for weight control in some segments of the adult population., (© 2019 The Obesity Society (TOS). Approximately one in eight people in the United States have been diagnosed with asthma. Asthma is associated with significant medical expenditure and has been implicated as a leading reason for chronic school absences. Environmental risk factors such as access to green space and exposure to poor air quality are patterned such that some vulnerable populations may be at higher risk. Using data from DC Health, the Washington, DC, department of public health, this study investigated associations between neighborhood social, built, and natural environments and rates of asthma-related healthcare encounters by ZIP code between 2014 and 2017. We found that significant differences in rates exist between ZIP codes and for different subpopulations. Black boys had the highest overall rate, with 58.49 visits per 1,000 population, ranging by ZIP code from 0 to 88.56 visits. We found that the ZIP code Social Vulnerability Index was consistently associated with rates of healthcare encounters, but not access to green/open space or exposure to high traffic. However, we discuss how the ZIP code level may not be an appropriate level at which to investigate such built/natural environment features because of the proportion of variability that is found within rather than between ZIP codes. Outcomes of behavioral lifestyle interventions for promoting weight loss vary widely across participants. The effectiveness of a weight management intervention may depend on a person's environmental context. This study compared short- and longer-term effects of a structured nationwide weight management program for people living in neighborhoods with different levels of walkability and different access to recreational places (parks, fitness facilities). Drawing on the health production model, we tested competing hypotheses for whether treatment effects of the program complement environmental supports or substitute for environmental constraints. We studied the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) MOVE! weight management program using VA electronic heath record data (2009-2014) and a difference-in-differences design with an inverse propensity score matched comparison group. A total of 114,256 program participants and 498,494 non-participants comprised the sample. Built environment features were measured within one-mile of each person's home. We estimated program effects on body mass index (BMI) for subgroups with different built environments at 6-, 12-, 18-, and 24-month follow-up using linear regressions with person and year fixed effects. At 6 months, the program reduced BMI by 0.4-0.6 kg/m 2 among men and 0.3-0.5 kg/m 2 among women. The effect diminished at 12, 18, and 24 months. The program effect did not vary significantly across subgroups with different walkability, park access, or fitness facility access. The MOVE! program was not sensitive to environmental context. As activity space measures are increasingly used to estimate exposure to environmental determinants of health, little is known about the stability of these measures over time. To test the stability of GPS-derived measures of activity-space footprint, size, and environmental features over time, we compared 14-day measures at baseline and six months later for 35 adults in a large city. Activity-space measures were based on convex hulls and 500 m route buffers, and included the geographic footprint (i.e. location of the activity space), size (i.e., area in square miles; (Cummins, 2007)), and environmental features including supermarket, fast-food restaurant, and parkland density. The proportion of the participants' smaller geographic footprint covered by the larger was, on average, 0.64 (SD 0.17) for the 500 m route buffer and 0.84 (SD 0.18) for the convex hull. Mean percent change in activity space size ranged from 36.3% (mean daily 500 m route buffer) to 221.3% (cumulative convex hull). Mean percent change in the density of environmental features ranged from 28.8 to 66.5%. Forty-one percent to 92.4% of the variance at one timepoint was predicted by environmental features measured within approximately six months. Activity-space size and environmental features were moderately to highly stable over six months, although there was considerable variation in stability between measures. Insects have a gas-filled respiratory system, which provides a challenge for those that have become aquatic secondarily. Diving beetles (Dytiscidae) use bubbles on the surface of their bodies to supply O 2 for their dives and passively gain O 2 from the water. However, these bubbles usually require replenishment at the water's surface. A highly diverse assemblage of subterranean dytiscids has evolved in isolated calcrete aquifers of Western Australia with limited/no access to an air-water interface, raising the question of how they are able to respire. We explored the hypothesis that they use cutaneous respiration by studying the mode of respiration in three subterranean dytiscid species from two isolated aquifers. The three beetle species consume O 2 directly from the water, but they lack structures on their bodies that could have respiratory function. They also have a lower metabolic rate than other insects. O 2 boundary layers surrounding the beetles are present, indicating that O 2 diffuses into the surface of their bodies via cutaneous respiration. Cuticle thickness measurements and other experimental results were incorporated into a mathematical model to understand whether cutaneous respiration limits beetle size. The model indicates that the cuticle contributes considerably to resistance in the O 2 cascade. As the beetles become larger, their metabolic scope narrows, potentially limiting their ability to allocate energy to mating, foraging and development at sizes above approximately 5 mg. We explored the validity of a survey measuring activity spaces for use in health research in a racially/ethnically diverse adult sample (n = 86) living in four Chicago neighborhoods. Participants reported on the location and visit frequency of 64 activities and wore a GPS data logger. We assessed the spatial congruence of survey- and GPS-derived convex hull measures and the number of GPS points within 100 m and 1000 m of survey locations. The survey-derived convex hull measures captured a small percentage (median = 35.9%) of the GPS-derived convex hull area. In recent decades, biologists have sought to tag animals with various sensors to study aspects of their behavior otherwise inaccessible from controlled laboratory experiments. Despite this, chemical information, both environmental and physiological, remains challenging to collect despite its tremendous potential to elucidate a wide range of animal behaviors. In this work, we explore the design, feasibility, and data collection constraints of implantable, near-infrared fluorescent nanosensors based on DNA-wrapped single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) embedded within a biocompatible poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel. These sensors are enabled by Corona Phase Molecular Recognition (CoPhMoRe) to provide selective chemical detection for marine organism biologging. Riboflavin, a key nutrient in oxidative phosphorylation, is utilized as a model analyte in in vitro and ex vivo tissue measurements. Nine species of bony fish, sharks, eels, and turtles were utilized on site at Oceanogràfic in Valencia, Spain to investigate sensor design parameters, including implantation depth, sensor imaging and detection limits, fluence, and stability, as well as acute and long-term biocompatibility. Hydrogels were implanted subcutaneously and imaged using a customized, field-portable Raspberry Pi camera system. Hydrogels could be detected up to depths of 7 mm in the skin and muscle tissue of deceased teleost fish ( Sparus aurata and Stenotomus chrysops) and a deceased catshark ( Galeus melastomus). The effects of tissue heterogeneity on hydrogel delivery and fluorescence visibility were explored, with darker tissues masking hydrogel fluorescence. Hydrogels were implanted into a living eastern river cooter ( Pseudemys concinna), a European eel ( Anguilla anguilla), and a second species of catshark ( Scyliorhinus stellaris). The animals displayed no observable changes in movement and feeding patterns. Imaging by high-resolution ultrasound indicated no changes in tissue structure in the eel and catshark. In the turtle, some tissue reaction was detected upon dissection and histopathology. Analysis of movement patterns in sarasa comet goldfish ( Carassius auratus) indicated that the hydrogel implants did not affect swimming patterns. Taken together, these results indicate that this implantable form factor is a promising technique for biologging using aquatic vertebrates with further development. Future work will tune the sensor detection range to the physiological range of riboflavin, develop strategies to normalize sensor signal to account for the optical heterogeneity of animal tissues, and design a flexible, wearable device incorporating optoelectronic components that will enable sensor measurements in moving animals. This work advances the application of nanosensors to organisms beyond the commonly used rodent and zebrafish models and is an important step toward the physiological biologging of aquatic organisms.

This study examined relationships between contextual factors and within-person variations in snack food and sweetened beverage intake in African American women (n = 79), aged 25-65 years living in metropolitan Chicago. For seven days, participants wore a global positioning system (GPS) logger and were signaled five times per day to complete an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) survey assessing behaviors and environmental, social, and other contextual factors via smartphones. Within-person associations between snack food and beverage intake and contextual factors were analyzed using three-level logistic regressions. Participants reported consuming a snack food at 38.4% of signals and a sweetened beverage at 17.9% of signals. Fast food restaurant and convenience store density within the daily activity space was not associated with either snack food or sweetened beverage intake. However, perceptions of close proximity to fast food restaurants and convenience stores making it easier to eat/drink, while accounting for one's usual proximity, were associated with increased odds of snack intake (O.R. 2.1; 95% C.I. 1.4, 3.0) but not sweetened beverage. We also found engaging in activities such as watching television (O.R. 1.8; 95% C.I. 1.2, 2.7) and talking (O.R. 1.7; 95% C.I. 1.1, 2.6) while eating were associated with higher snack intake. These factors were not related to sweetened beverage intake. Public health interventions addressing fast food restaurant and convenience store accessibility and food offerings and marketing within these outlets may help reduce snack food intake. Objective: To estimate the causal effects of a population-scale behavioral weight management program and to determine whether the program's effectiveness depends on participants' geographic access to places to purchase healthy and less healthy foods., Data Sources: Secondary data from U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs clinical and administrative records (2008-2014), retail food environment measures from commercial databases (2008-2014), and the American Community Survey (2009-2014)., Study Design: We estimated the effect of the VA's MOVE! weight management program on body mass index after 6 months using difference-in-difference regressions to compare participants with a propensity score-matched control group. We estimated treatment effects overall and in subgroups with different access to supermarkets, fast-food restaurants, and convenience stores., Principal Findings: MOVE! reduced BMI by about 0.71 units among men and 0.70 units among women. The program was slightly less effective for men living near fast-food restaurants or convenience stores. We found no evidence that treatment effects varied with the food environment among women., Conclusions: The residential food environment modestly alters MOVE! effectiveness among men. A greater understanding of environmental barriers to and facilitators of intentional weight loss is needed. This study examined the number of days of global positioning system (GPS) monitoring needed to measure attributes of an individual's routine activity space. Multiple alternative activity space representations (cumulative, mean daily), measures (kernel density, route buffer, convex hull), and attributes (area size, supermarkets, fast food restaurants, parks) were examined. Results suggested wide variability in required GPS days to obtain valid estimates of activity space attributes (1-23 days). In general, fewer days were needed for mean daily activity space representations, kernel density measures, and densities of environmental exposures (vs. counts). While kernel density measures reliably estimated between-person differences in attributes after just a few days, most variability in environmental attributes for convex hull and route buffer measures was within-person. The aquatic bug Aphelocheirus aestivalis (Fabricius 1794) utilises a plastron, a thin bubble layer on the surface of its body to extract O 2 from the water. Millions of tiny hairs keep the bubble from collapsing, enabling the bug to remain submerged indefinitely. The development of fibre optic O 2 -probes has allowed measurements of O 2 pressure (PO 2 ) surrounding the plastron, and within the plastron although only for short periods. Here we developed methods to continuously measure plastron PO 2 , and investigate how it is affected by temperature (15, 20, 25°C), activity, and water circulation. We also made measurements of water PO 2 , temperature and velocity in the field and swimming velocity at the treatment temperatures. Results show that plastron PO 2 is inversely related to temperature, associated with differences in metabolic demand, and that small bouts of activity or changes in water convection result in rapid changes in plastron PO 2 . A model was developed to calculate the conditions under which Aphelocheirus would exist without becoming O 2 -limited in relation to water temperature, PO 2 and boundary layer thickness. This suggests that Aphelocheirus at one of two field sites may have a reduced metabolic scope even in well convected water in association with low PO 2 and moderate temperature, and that in well convected, air-saturated water, bugs may have a reduced metabolic scope where water temperatures are between 20 and 25°C. This study examined whether community food environments altered the longer-term effects of a nationwide behavioral weight management program on body mass index (BMI). The sample was comprised of 98,871 male weight management program participants and 15,385 female participants, as well as 461,302 and 37,192 inverse propensity-score weighted matched male and female controls. We measured the community food environment by counting the number of supermarkets, convenience stores, and fast food restaurants within a 1-mile radius around each person's home address. We used difference-in-difference regression models with person and calendar time fixed effects to estimate MOVE! effects over time in sub-populations defined by community food environment attributes. Among men, after an initial decrease in BMI at 6 months, the effect of the program decreased over time, with BMI increasing incrementally at 12 months (0.098 kg/m², p < 0.001), 18 months (0.069 kg/m², p < 0.001), and 24 months (0.067 kg/m², p < 0.001). Among women, the initial effects of the program decreased over time as well. Women had an incremental BMI change of 0.099 kg/m² at 12 months ( p < 0.05) with non-significant incremental changes at 18 months and 24 months. We found little evidence that these longer-term effects of the weight management program differed depending on the community food environment. Flying insects have the highest mass-specific metabolic rate of all animals. Oxygen is supplied to the flight muscles by a combination of diffusion and convection along the internal air-filled tubes of the tracheal system. This study measured maximum flight metabolic rate (FMR) during tethered flight in the migratory locust Locusta migratoria under varying oxygen partial pressure ( P O 2 ) in background gas mixtures of nitrogen (N 2 ), sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) and helium (He), to vary O 2 diffusivity and gas mixture density independently. With N 2 as the sole background gas (normodiffusive-normodense), mass-independent FMR averaged 132±19 mW g -0.75 at normoxia ( P O 2 =21 kPa), and was not limited by tracheal system conductance, because FMR did not increase in hyperoxia. However, FMR declined immediately with hypoxia, oxy-conforming nearly completely. Thus, the locust respiratory system is matched to maximum functional requirements, with little reserve capacity. With SF 6 as the sole background gas (hypodiffusive-hyperdense), the shape of the relationship between FMR and P O 2  was similar to that in N 2 , except that FMR was generally lower (e.g. 24% lower at normoxia). This appeared to be due to increased density of the gas mixture rather than decreased O 2 diffusivity, because hyperoxia did not reverse it. Normoxic FMR was not significantly different in He-SF 6 (hyperdiffusive-normodense) compared with the N 2 background gas, and likewise there was no significant difference between FMR in SF 6 -He (normodiffusive-hyperdense) compared with the SF 6 background gas. Introduction: Among the nearly 21 million military veterans living in the United States, 64.0% of women and 76.1% of men are overweight or obese, higher rates than in the civilian population (56.9% of women and 69.9% of men). Attributes of the residential environment are linked to obesity. The objective of this study was to characterize the residential environments of the US veteran population with respect to availability of food and recreational venues., Methods: We used American Community Survey data to determine the concentration of veterans (the percentage of veterans among the adult population) in all continental US census tracts in 2013, and we used proprietary data to construct measures of availability of food and recreational venues per census tract. Using descriptive statistics and ordinary least-squares regression, we examined associations between the concentration of veterans per census tract and those residential environmental features., Results: In census tracts with high concentrations of veterans, residents had, on average, 0.5 (interquartile range, 0-0.8) supermarkets within a 1-mile radius, while residents in census tracts with low concentrations of veterans had 3.2 (interquartile range, 0.6-3.7) supermarkets. Patterns were similar for grocery and convenience stores, fast food restaurants, parks, and commercial fitness facilities. In adjusted analyses controlling for census-tract-level covariates, veteran concentration remained strongly negatively associated with availability of those food and recreational venues. In nonmetropolitan tracts, adjusted associations were greatly attenuated and even positive., Conclusion: Where veterans live is strongly associated with availability of food outlets providing healthy (and unhealthy) foods and with recreational venues, raising questions about the contributions of veterans' residential environments to their high obesity rates. Additional research is needed to address those questions.

The authors of this study examined within-person associations of environmental factors (weather, built and social environmental barriers) and personal factors (daily hassles, affect) with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior (SB) in African American women aged 25-64 years living in metropolitan Chicago (n = 97). In 2012-13, for seven days, women wore an accelerometer and were signaled five times per day to complete a survey covering environmental and personal factors on a study-provided smartphone. Day-level measures of each were derived, and mixed regression models were used to test associations. Poor weather was associated with a 27.3% reduction in daily MVPA. Associations between built and social environmental barriers and daily MVPA or SB were generally not statistically significant. Negative affect at the first daily signal was associated with a 38.6% decrease in subsequent daily MVPA and a 33.2-minute increase in subsequent daily SB. Each one-minute increase in MVPA during the day was associated with a 2.2% higher likelihood of positive affect at the end of the day. SB during the day was associated with lower subsequent positive affect. Real-time interventions that address overcoming poor weather and negative affect may help African American women increase MVPA and/or decrease SB.

Temperature-dependent infrared spectra of aqueous nitrate solutions with a range of concentrations and ionic strengths are used to determine the effect of ionic strength on the relative stabilities of different solvation geometries in aqueous nitrate ion. The asymmetric stretching absorption band from 1250 to 1450 cm -1 changes line shape with temperature, allowing two distinct peaks to be fit for each spectrum. Because each peak is assigned based on electronic structure calculations as a proxy to a different solvation motif, van't Hoff plots provide insight into the thermodynamics of exchange between different solvation geometries. A strong linear trend is seen between increased ionic strength and the magnitude of both the enthalpic and entropic contributions to the solvation geometry stabilities. Electronic structure computations of previously proposed structures in different ionic strengths are performed in the presence of external fields, roughly simulating the impact of ions in solution.

We describe a process for evaluating proposed ecosystem restoration projects intended to improve survival of juvenile salmon in the Columbia River estuary (CRE). Changes in the Columbia River basin (northwestern USA), including hydropower development, have contributed to the listing of 13 salmon stocks as endangered or threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Habitat restoration in the CRE, from Bonneville Dam to the ocean, is part of a basin-wide, legally mandated effort to mitigate federal hydropower impacts on salmon survival. An Expert Regional Technical Group (ERTG) was established in 2009 to improve and implement a process for assessing and assigning "survival benefit units" (SBUs) to restoration actions. The SBU concept assumes site-specific restoration projects will increase juvenile salmon survival during migration through the 234 km CRE. Assigned SBUs are used to inform selection of restoration projects and gauge mitigation progress. The ERTG standardized the SBU assessment process to improve its scientific integrity, repeatability, and transparency. In lieu of experimental data to quantify the survival benefits of individual restoration actions, the ERTG adopted a conceptual model composed of three assessment criteria-certainty of success, fish opportunity improvements, and habitat capacity improvements-to evaluate restoration projects. Based on these criteria, an algorithm assigned SBUs by integrating potential fish density as an indicator of salmon performance. Between 2009 and 2014, the ERTG assessed SBUs for 55 proposed projects involving a total of 181 restoration actions located across 8 of 9 reaches of the CRE, largely relying on information provided in a project template based on the conceptual model, presentations, discussions with project sponsors, and site visits. Most projects restored tidal inundation to emergent wetlands, improved riparian function, and removed invasive vegetation. The scientific relationship of geomorphic and salmonid responses to restoration actions remains the foremost concern. Although not designed to establish a broad strategy for estuary restoration, the scoring process has adaptively influenced the types, designs, and locations of restoration proposals. Background: Food environment characterization in health studies often requires data on the location of food stores and restaurants. While commercial business lists are commonly used as data sources for such studies, current literature provides little guidance on how to use validation study results to make decisions on which commercial business list to use and how to maximize the accuracy of those lists. Using data from a retrospective cohort study [Weight And Veterans' Environments Study (WAVES)], we (a) explain how validity and bias information from existing validation studies (count accuracy, classification accuracy, locational accuracy, as well as potential bias by neighborhood racial/ethnic composition, economic characteristics, and urbanicity) were used to determine which commercial business listing to purchase for retail food outlet data and (b) describe the methods used to maximize the quality of the data and results of this approach., Methods: We developed data improvement methods based on existing validation studies. These methods included purchasing records from commercial business lists (InfoUSA and Dun and Bradstreet) based on store/restaurant names as well as standard industrial classification (SIC) codes, reclassifying records by store type, improving geographic accuracy of records, and deduplicating records. We examined the impact of these procedures on food outlet counts in US census tracts., Results: After cleaning and deduplicating, our strategy resulted in a 17.5% reduction in the count of food stores that were valid from those purchased from InfoUSA and 5.6% reduction in valid counts of restaurants purchased from Dun and Bradstreet. Locational accuracy was improved for 7.5% of records by applying street addresses of subsequent years to records with post-office (PO) box addresses. In total, up to 83% of US census tracts annually experienced a change (either positive or negative) in the count of retail food outlets between the initial purchase and the final dataset., Discussion: Our study provides a step-by-step approach to purchase and process business list data obtained from commercial vendors. The approach can be followed by studies of any size, including those with datasets too large to process each record by hand and will promote consistency in characterization of the retail food environment across studies.

Objective: Smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA), or real-time, repeated sampling of participants' states, behaviors, or experiences over time, is a promising approach to understanding obesity-related behaviors in African-American women-a population with the highest obesity prevalence. In this study, we explored participants' experiences with this methodology., Design and Sample: In this secondary analysis of data, 100 African-American women participated in seven consecutive days of EMA data collection., Measures: Measures related to acceptability (technical challenges, daily burden, emotional responses, willingness to participate in future studies) and data quality (reporting accuracy, behavior reactivity, adherence), as well as demographics, were collected., Results: While there were few demographic differences, women who were unemployed, had the lowest educational levels, or had the lowest per capita income reported the greatest enjoyment with mobile technology-based EMA, while at the same time reporting the highest levels of challenge with use of the equipment. Participants consistently indicated willingness to participate in future EMA studies and indicated that the study method was acceptable. Many aquatic insects utilise air bubbles on the surface of their bodies to supply O2 while they dive. The bubbles can simply store O2, as in the case of an 'air store', or they can act as a physical 'gas gill', extracting O2 from the water. Backswimmers of the genus Anisops augment their air store with O2 from haemoglobin cells located in the abdomen. The O2 release from the haemoglobin helps stabilise bubble volume, enabling backswimmers to remain near neutrally buoyant for a period of the dive. It is generally assumed that the backswimmer air store does not act as a gas gill and that gas exchange with the water is negligible. This study combines measurements of dive characteristics under different exotic gases (N2, He, SF6, CO) with mathematical modelling, to show that the air store of the backswimmer Anisops deanei does exchange gases with the water. Our results indicate that approximately 20% of O2 consumed during a dive is obtained directly from the water. The river bug Aphelocheirus aestivalis is a 40 mg aquatic insect that, as an adult, relies totally on an incompressible physical gill to exchange respiratory gases with the water. The gill (called a 'plastron') consists of a stationary layer of air held in place on the body surface by millions of tiny hairs that support a permanent air-water interface, so that the insect never has to renew the gas at the water's surface. The volume of air in the plastron is extremely small (0.14 mm(3)), under slightly negative pressure and connected to the gas-filled tracheal system through spiracles on the cuticle. Here, we measure PO2 of the water and within the plastron gas with O2-sensing fibre optics to understand the effectiveness and limitations of the gas exchanger. The difference in PO2 is highest in stagnant water and decreases with increasing convection over the surface. Respiration of bugs in water-filled vials varies between 33 and 296 pmol O2 s(-1), depending on swimming activity. The effective thickness of the boundary layer around the plastron was calculated from respiration rate, PO2 difference and plastron surface area, according to the Fick diffusion equation and verified by direct measurements with the fibre-optic probes. In stagnant water, the boundary layer is approximately 500 μm thick, which nevertheless can satisfy the demands of resting bugs, even if the PO2 of the free water decreases to half that of air saturation. The Muller F element (4.2 Mb, ~80 protein-coding genes) is an unusual autosome of Drosophila melanogaster; it is mostly heterochromatic with a low recombination rate. To investigate how these properties impact the evolution of repeats and genes, we manually improved the sequence and annotated the genes on the D. erecta, D. mojavensis, and D. grimshawi F elements and euchromatic domains from the Muller D element. We find that F elements have greater transposon density (25-50%) than euchromatic reference regions (3-11%). Among the F elements, D. grimshawi has the lowest transposon density (particularly DINE-1: 2% vs. 11-27%). F element genes have larger coding spans, more coding exons, larger introns, and lower codon bias. Comparison of the Effective Number of Codons with the Codon Adaptation Index shows that, in contrast to the other species, codon bias in D. grimshawi F element genes can be attributed primarily to selection instead of mutational biases, suggesting that density and types of transposons affect the degree of local heterochromatin formation. F element genes have lower estimated DNA melting temperatures than D element genes, potentially facilitating transcription through heterochromatin. Most F element genes (~90%) have remained on that element, but the F element has smaller syntenic blocks than genome averages (3.4-3.6 vs. 8.4-8.8 genes per block), indicating greater rates of inversion despite lower rates of recombination. This study evaluated estuarine habitat use, life-history composition, growth and survival of four successive broods of coho salmon Oncoryhnchus kisutch in Salmon River, Oregon, U.S.A. Subyearling and yearling O. kisutch used restored and natural estuarine wetlands, particularly in the spring and winter. Stream-reared yearling smolts spent an average of 2 weeks in the estuary growing rapidly before entering the ocean. Emergent fry also entered the estuary in the spring, and some resided in a tidal marsh throughout the summer, even as salinities increased to >20. A significant portion of the summer stream-resident population of juvenile O. kisutch migrated out of the catchment in the autumn and winter and used estuary wetlands and adjacent streams as alternative winter-rearing habitats until the spring when they entered the ocean as yearling smolts. Passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag returns and juvenile life-history reconstructions from otoliths of returning adults revealed that four juvenile life-history types contributed to the adult population. Estuarine-associated life-history strategies accounted for 20-35% of the adults returning to spawn in the four brood years, indicating that a sizable proportion of the total O. kisutch production is ignored by conventional estimates based on stream habitat capacity. Juvenile O. kisutch responses to the reconnection of previously unavailable estuarine habitats have led to greater life-history diversity in the population and reflect greater phenotypic plasticity of the species in the U.S. Pacific Northwest than previously recognized., (© 2014 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles.)

Objective: The current study tested the effectiveness of interactive versus passive distraction that was delivered via a virtual reality type head-mounted display helmet for children experiencing cold pressor pain., Design: Forty children, aged 5 to 13 years, underwent 1 or 2 baseline cold pressor trials followed by interactive distraction and passive distraction trials in counterbalanced order., Main Outcome Measures: Pain threshold and pain tolerance., Results: Children who experienced either passive or interactive distraction demonstrated significant improvements in both pain tolerance and pain threshold relative to their baseline scores. In contrast, children who underwent a second cold pressor trial without distraction showed no significant improvements in pain tolerance or threshold., Conclusion: Although both distraction conditions were effective, the interactive distraction condition was significantly more effective. Abstract Background: Cardiac surgery has expanded the available approaches to aortocoronary artery bypass grafting to include approaches from minimally invasive surgery to full sternotomy. The heart can be arrested, left beating, or assisted with a right ventricular assist device or cardiopulmonary bypass pump. We have examined the 4 surgical modes that we use routinely in our large multisurgeon practice to determine our selection biases and the outcomes of the different techniques. Methods: Of the 4733 coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) patients we studied from January 2000 through December 2002, 2332 (49.3%) operations were done on-pump on the arrested heart, 1908 (40.3%) were performed off-pump, 364 (7.7%) were performed on-pump on the beating heart, and 129 (2.7%) were performed with right heart assist. The preoperative risk factors, operative variables, and postoperative outcomes of the groups were analyzed. Results: Patients selected for on-pump beating heart procedures tended to be sicker with the highest predicted risk of death. We also selected patients who were in cardiogenic shock, in resuscitation, in emergent or salvage status, on dialysis, and with preoperative intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) use for on-pump beating heart procedures at higher than expected rates. Patients with renal failure with or without dialysis, and those having a history of cerebrovascular accident tended not to be chosen for on-pump arrested heart procedures. Off-pump beating heart procedures were avoided for patients with cardiogenic shock or resuscitation, in emergent or salvage status, and with preoperative IABP use. The mortality rate in these patients was slightly worse in the on-pump beating heart group (4.4%) than in the on-pump arrested heart (3.5%) and off-pump (2.3%) groups (analysis of variance [ANOVA], P =.04). Atrial fibrillation occurred more frequently in both the on-pump beating heart (20.1%) and on-pump arrested heart (23.8%) groups (ANOVA, P <.001). The on-pump groups had higher rates of blood product use and reoperation for bleeding and a prolonged ventilation rate, compared with the other procedures. On-pump patients had a statistically longer length of stay than either off-pump or right heart-assisted patients ( P <.05) and required longer times on the ventilator and in the intensive care unit. Conclusions: Normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass with a beating heart is safe and efficacious and may be the method of choice for patients in cardiogenic shock, requiring resuscitation, or with previous CABG surgery, recent myocardial infarction, a low ejection fraction, or unstable arrhythmias.

Background: The incidence, predictive factors, and outcomes related to conversion from off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) to on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (ONCAB) have not been well defined. We sought to determine the incidence of conversion, predictive factors, and any associated adverse consequences., Methods: From January 2000 through June 2002, 1,644 patients underwent nonemergent OPCAB with 61 patients requiring conversion from OPCAB to ONCAB. These groups were retrospectively compared by univariate and multivariate regression analysis. The converted group was then computer matched 1:3, to a cohort of ONCAB patients to determine differences in outcomes., Results: The overall conversion rate was 3.71%. Converted patients compared with a computer-matched ONCAB patients had a higher incidence of operative mortality (18.0% versus 2.7%, p < 0.001). Urgently converted patients had a higher incidence of postoperative cardiac arrest (25% versus 1.1%, p < 0.001), multisystem organ failure (10.7% versus 0.6%, p < 0.001), vascular complications (7.1% versus 1.1%, p = 0.03), and perioperative myocardial infarction (10.7% versus 1.1%, p = 0.02). Predictive factors for conversion were surgeon early in OPCAB experience (odds ratio [OR] 4.4), previous CABG (OR 2.8), and congestive heart failure (OR 2.0). The need for urgent-emergent conversion was highly predictive for operative mortality (OR 7.3) compared with elective conversion., Conclusions: Patients undergoing urgent-emergent but not elective conversion from OPCAB to ONCAB had a significantly higher risk of mortality and morbidity compared with patients whose procedure was initially ONCAB. Variables predictive of conversion included previous CABG, congestive heart failure, and surgeons early in OPCAB experience.

Advanced multiple beam equalization radiography (AMBER) and conventional chest radiography were prospectively evaluated in the detection and quantitation of alveolar (air-space) consolidation. Thirty-seven healthy volunteers underwent bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), the retained lavage fluid serving as a model for alveolar consolidation. After BAL, the subjects underwent AMBER and conventional chest radiography. The lower lung zones on the radiographs were divided into four zones and graded for alveolar consolidation by three observers. There was no significant difference in the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve between the two techniques in the detection of lavage fluid. The grade of opacification was rated significantly higher (P < .05) on conventional radiographs for three of the four lung zones examined, and the correlation between the quantity of retained lavage fluid and grade of opacity was better on conventional radiographs. Detection of lavage fluid was poor with either technique. The exposure compensation of AMBER was evident in this model of air-space disease but did not affect overall observer performance.

High-resolution computed tomography (CT) was correlated with pulmonary function tests in the evaluation of regional emphysema in 59 smokers. The lung was divided into upper (above the carina tracheae) and lower (below the carina tracheae) zones, and the degree of emphysema was graded with a subjective and an objective measurement. Functional emphysema was defined as a diffusion capacity less than 75% of predicted and forced expiratory volume in 1 second less than 80% of predicted. Three of 15 (20%) subjects with functional emphysema had no subjective evidence of emphysema at high-resolution CT, and 10 of 25 (40%) with emphysema at high-resolution CT had no functional abnormalities consistent with emphysema. Even though the upper lung zones were more severely affected by emphysema, the degree of emphysema in the lower zones had a stronger correlation with pulmonary function abnormalities. The upper lung zones are a relatively silent region where extensive destruction may occur before functional abnormalities become known.
