NCLB has created a climate where teachers feel increasingly pressured to ensure their students pass the test, with the result that they allocate less time for purposeful and authentic learning experiences (Kohn, 2004). Thus, rote memorization is favored over inquiry. Teachers must aim to create a classroom environment that recognizes and values students' genuine thoughts, questions, and ideas. They should aim to provide them with opportunities to express their thoughts and feelings and to learn to work with others in a constructive way. Philosophy for Children (P4C) is at the core of the author's approach to teaching. P4C is a curriculum approach created by Matthew Lipman, a professor of philosophy at Columbia University, as an attempt to "improve children's reasoning abilities by having them think about thinking as they discuss concepts of importance to them." P4C has become an important part of her teaching philosophy and allows student to engage thoughtfully and regularly within an intellectually safe classroom community.

This article describes the implementation and outcomes, as perceived by the professional learning providers and school principals, of a professional learning (PL) model devised in response to recognition that models of PL that are effective in urban settings are not effective in rural and remote areas. Rather than expecting the teachers to travel to an urban venue, the project used a five member team to provide 11 person-days of mathematics PL to a relatively remote cluster of schools over the course of one school week. The model was designed to meet the specific needs of teachers and schools in the cluster and to establish relationships that would form the basis of ongoing contacts. Data demonstrating the effectiveness of the model as well as the difficulties encountered, particularly by the PL providers, are presented and discussed. In addition, the importance of relationships between PL providers and teachers, and the value of grounding PL in a theory of learning are highlighted.

As part of an ongoing evaluation of new sample preparation methods conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Environmental Monitoring Systems Laboratory - Las Vegas, especially those meethods that minimize waste solvent generation, we investigated the feasibility of using centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) to extract parts-per-billion levels of phenols and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) from aqueous samples. In this paper, we report on the optimization of a CPC extraction technique, discuss the effects of five variables (i.e., extraction solvent, sample loading flow rate, volume of displaced extraction solvent, ionic strength, and presence of humic materials in the aqueous sample) on the extraction of 13 phenols and 20 OCPs, and present recovery data for these analytes from spiked reagent water and spiked wastewater samples. Our results indicate that methylene chloride is more effective than hexane in extracting phenols but only slightly better than hexane in extracting OCPs. CPC appears to perform much better than conventional liquid-liquid extraction for phenols but not for OCPs, and our results also show that the target compounds are extracted into a very small volume of solvent, which means that the CPC technique can be used to concentrate such compounds from a relatively large volume of aqueous matrix (e.g., 100 mL) into a small volume of solvent (e.g., 2 mL). Therefore, the CPC technique reduces extraction solvent consumption and eliminates additional sample workup.

Background: Nurse bedside shift report (BSR) improves satisfaction, quality and safety. Yet, postimplementation adoption rates remain low in hospitals where BSR has been introduced. Further research is needed to understand what content is most appropriate to discuss during BSR and what facilitators are from the clinical nurses' perspective. Aims: Identify and describe acute care clinical nurses' and nursing supervisors' experiences and opinions regarding: process of BSR, appropriate content for BSR and barriers and facilitators related to implementation of BSR. Design: A phenomenological qualitative study was conducted at an acute care 500 bed, not‐for‐profit academic medical centre located in the southern United States. Methods: Clinical nurses (N = 22) and nursing supervisors (N = 12) from every inpatient division were recruited and interviewed. The data were analysed for relationships, similarities and differences. Themes were then identified by two independent researchers. Results: Five themes were identified: (a) time constraints and clinical nurse's workflow must be taken into consideration; (b) a modified approach is necessary; (c) process and specific critical content should be individualized so that it is meaningful for all parties involved; (d) specific critical content that should be discussed outside the patient's room; and (e) specific critical content that should be discussed inside the patient's room. Conclusions: One way to minimize interruptions is to conduct BSR using a modified approach, where a portion of the hand‐off occurs inside and outside the patient's room. In addition, this study identified the nurses' preferred location where specific critical topics should be discussed. Relevance to clinical practice: Results from this study should be used to inform the practice BSR so the desired outcomes of patient and family satisfaction, nursing quality and patient safety can be realized. This study should influence future research aimed at identifying strategies for successful implementation and sustained use of BSR. The COREQ checklist was used to write manuscript. Medical applications are being created in imaging with the goal that radiologists will be able to use them to interpret patient images. Mobile devices, such as the iPad, are able to display radiologic images in such a way that radiologists are able to use them successfully. The alternative approach of using mobile devices for viewing and making a diagnosis could prove to be immensely helpful in emergency situations where no workstations are available. The use of mobile devices would not replace workstations for radiologists, but rather it would advance their ability to expedite dictations for more effective patient care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose. To review the current literature pertaining to dense breast anatomy, imaging considerations, and patient notification laws. Methods. The literature for this review was obtained by searching for peer-reviewed articles about breast density and breast density notification for the years 2009 to 2012 using Google Scholar. Results. The research regarding dense breast anatomy, imaging options related to dense breasts, and notification laws yields important considerations for patients, physicians, and imaging science professionals performing the procedures. Discussion. Dense breast anatomy can hinder the accuracy of screening mammography. Breast density notification laws inform patients about the density level of their breasts and introduce them to additional imaging options. The laws raise questions about whether notification is necessary and beneficial or whether it leads to increased radiation exposure, health care costs, and stress to the patient. Conclusion. Dense breast notification laws serve to inform patients about their anatomy and provide them with the knowledge to make informed health care decisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
