Abstract

Today resource adequacy is most often maintained by installing natural gas plants to meet the peak load. In California, the current risk of inadequate electricity supply is highest around sunset in late summer. In a zero-carbon grid, resource adequacy will increasingly require adequate stored energy throughout the entire year. Here we seek to develop an intuition about the times of the year when resource adequacy may be most challenged for a solar-dominant system. We use a simplified approach and show that the month of the biggest challenge occurs in winter and can shift by more than two months depending on the amount of solar and storage that are built.

23. Teacher and Parent Perception of a Middle School After School Tutoring Program

Abstract

The problem in the 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) afterschool program was that 40% of the students enrolled performed below the proficiency level in reading on the state assessed exams during the past 3 school years. This was of great concern for the teachers and administrators in this Title I middle school, Grades 6-8. This qualitative project study aimed to explore, understand, and describe the practices and perceptions of CCLC teachers and parents of students enrolled in the 21st CCLC afterschool program. The conceptual framework was Epstein's partnership model, which proposed that school, family, and community work collaboratively to influence positive academic outcomes for students. The research questions examined teachers' practices and parents' involvement to improve reading achievement for low-performing students enrolled in the CCLC. The primary data sources were semistructured interviews of six certified teachers and six parents. Data analysis using thematic coding revealed that all participants acknowledged worry about state mandated test scores, the importance of improving literacy skills, the use of activities to improve student engagement and recommended more parental involvement in the CCLC. Based on the teacher and parent interviews, the final project was designed for teachers using professional development based on researched-based strategies to improve reading with a focus on improving parent involvement in the CCLC. Positive social change may be realized when quality professional development is implemented to enhance the CCLC staff's knowledge of strategies to improve reading achievement on mandated tests for students enrolled in the CCLC program. Abstract

Introduction: There is a growing body of literature detailing coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) cardiovascular complications and hypercoagulability, although little has been published on venous or arterial thrombosis risk.Case Report: In this report, we present a single case of cardioembolic stroke in the setting of COVID-19 related myocarditis, diagnosed via cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and echocardiography. COVID-19 infection was confirmed via a ribonucleic acid polymerase chain reaction assay.Conclusion: Further research is needed to evaluate the hypercoagulable state of patients with COVID-19 to determine whether prophylactic anticoagulation may be warranted to prevent intracardiac thrombi and cardioembolic disease in patients with COVID-19 related myocarditis.

For a version of causal consistency, we identify optimal records under both offline and online recording setting. Under the offline setting, a central authority has information about every process' view of the execution and can decide what information to record for each process. Abstract

Low mass suspension systems with high-Q pendulum stages are used to enable quantum radiation pressure noise limited experiments. Utilising multiple pendulum stages with vertical blade springs and materials with high quality factors provides attenuation of seismic and thermal noise, however damping of these high-Q pendulum systems in multiple degrees of freedom is essential for practical implementation. Viscous damping such as eddy-current damping can be employed but introduces displacement noise from force noise due to thermal fluctuations in the damping system. In this paper we demonstrate a passive damping system with adjustable damping strength as a solution for this problem that can be used for low mass suspension systems without adding additional displacement noise in science mode. We show a reduction of the damping factor by a factor of 8 on a test suspension and provide a general optimisation for this system., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) and immunity (IEIs) are Mendelian diseases in which complex phenotypes and patient rarity have limited clinical understanding. Whereas few genes have been annotated as contributing to both IEMs and IEIs, immunometabolic demands suggested greater functional overlap. Here, CRISPR screens tested IEM genes for immunologic roles and IEI genes for metabolic effects and found considerable previously unappreciated crossover. Analysis of IEMs showed that N-linked glycosylation and the hexosamine pathway enzyme Gfpt1 are critical for T cell expansion and function. Further, T helper (TH1) cells synthesized uridine diphosphate N-acetylglucosamine more rapidly and were more impaired by Gfpt1 deficiency than TH17 cells. Screening IEI genes found that Bcl11b promotes the CD4 T cell mitochondrial activity and Mcl1 expression necessary to prevent metabolic stress. Thus, a high degree of functional overlap exists between IEM and IEI genes, and immunometabolic mechanisms may underlie a previously underappreciated intersection of these disorders. Abstract

T cell subsets including effector (Teff), regulatory (Treg), and memory (Tmem) cells are characterized by distinct metabolic profiles that influence their differentiation and function. Previous research suggests that engagement of long-chain fatty acid oxidation (LC-FAO) supports Foxp3+ Treg cell and Tmem cell survival. However, evidence for this is mostly based on inhibition of Cpt1a, the rate-limiting enzyme for LC-FAO, with the drug etomoxir. Using genetic models to target Cpt1a specifically in T cells, we dissected the role of LC-FAO in primary, memory, and regulatory T cell responses. Here we show that the ACC2/Cpt1a axis is largely dispensable for Teff, Tmem, or Treg cell formation, and that the effects of etomoxir on T cell differentiation and function are independent of Cpt1a expression. Together our data argue that metabolic pathways other than LC-FAO fuel Tmem or Treg differentiation and suggest alternative mechanisms for the effects of etomoxir that involve mitochondrial respiration.

Abstract

This article explores the experiences and identities of minority ethnic women at the UEFA Women's Euros (UWE) held in England in 2022. It does so at a time when women sports fans have become more visible in the historically male-dominated environs of football fandom, particularly in the United Kingdom (UK), and when questions of 'race', ethnicity and gender are longstanding, contested elements of British culture and society. Through a Black feminist thought methodology allied to critical race theory principles, the study contributes an essential intersectional account of minority ethnic women's sports fandom experiences at a major international event. The findings confirm that the growth of women's football in the UK, motivated minority ethnic women to attend the UWE. However, the current visibility and inclusivity of professional women's football demonstrates a lack of diversity and cultural sensitivity, which often inhibits minority ethnic women from presenting their identities to further engage with and support the game's growth.
