The Supporting Older Adults & Caregivers: Integrative Service Learning (SOCIAL) partnership trains undergraduate social work students to provide practical home-based support for older adults with chronic illness and their family caregivers, serving as a pipeline for future leaders in older adult care. More than 2 million older adults are homebound, and 5 million need help leaving their homes. Family members often assume daily caregiving tasks to assist their loved ones, navigate health care systems, and provide much needed emotional support. In this teaching note, we provide an example of an integrative service learning model which can serve older adults and caregivers while offering valuable pedagogical experiences to baccalaureate students, along with strategies for curriculum building, community engagement, research and evaluation, and program sustainability.

We conducted a survey of the winners of University of California (UC) Berkeley’s Library Prize for Undergraduate Research (2003-2016) to learn about the long-term impact of undergraduate research projects on students, find out what winners gained from the experience, and compare their careers post-graduation with other students. Seventy-four winners responded and reported increased academic engagement during their undergraduate experience, and demonstrated greater than average academic achievement post-graduation. The winners became more confident of their research skills and their aptitude for post-graduate work as a result of winning. More than 3 times as many prize winners went on to graduate school as the typical UC graduate. We also examined usage statistics of winning papers that had been posted to UC’s open access publishing platform and observed that papers continue to be accessed by the general public years after students graduate.

Even the largest research library can no longer build comprehensive collections from all countries and in all languages. The pressure to justify acquisitions can be great on non-English language materials, which are often low-use in North American universities. Determining the research need for these materials, and assessing how well it is being met, is challenging. This paper analyzes impact by examining the language of cited references in doctoral dissertations at Berkeley, 2008-2015.

There is widespread scientific evidence that validates tonic immobility (TI) as part of the trauma response in victims of rape, and criminal justice practitioners are increasingly trained in trauma-informed approaches. Yet, legal and policy definitions of consent do not fully recognize TI during the incident as evidence of nonconsent. Using a systematic review of U.S. law and policy regarding sexual violence and consent, this paper analyzes the substantial legal reform of rape law and definitions of consent, suggesting ways to further integrate TI into existing law and legal practices to improve public health approaches and justice responses for victims. The goal of this project was to gather empirical data to answer questions about materials cited in dissertations, including ownership, age of materials and disciplinary usage. Conclusions – The citation analysis, while time-consuming, provided new and important information about the use of the Library’s collections and the level of support the collections afford doctoral students in the three related disciplines of education, psychology and social welfare. This data has informed collections-related decisions including format purchases and fund allocations.

Since the 2014 "Not Alone" report on campus sexual assault, the use of climate surveys to measure sexual violence on campuses across the United States has increased considerably. The current study utilizes a quasi meta-analysis approach to examine the utility of general campus climate surveys, which include a measure of sexual violence, in comparison to sexual assault specific climate surveys, in measuring student sexual assault experiences. Past research has highlighted the need to not only understand campus sexual assault prevalence rates for the general student population, but also the specific risk posed to more vulnerable populations such as the lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning/queer community (LGBQ) and Native American students. Results indicate that general campus climate surveys may be underestimating both the sexual victimization of the general student body as well as that of LGBQ and Native American students. Research and policy recommendations that focus on improved measurement of campus sexual assault experiences are discussed.

Background/Aims Patient experience is needed to understand if a service is meeting the needs of the population it serves. In rural areas, accessing maternity services can be challenging for women. Local provision should be explored and consistently reviewed to adapt to changing social requirements and expectations. The aim of this study was to examine a rural midwifery-led ultrasound service 5 years after implementation and post COVID-19, to ascertain if the service provides a positive service user experience. Methods A qualitative service evaluation was carried out using semi-structured interviews with four service users. Data were analysed using content analysis. Results Positive aspects of the service included continuity of care, communication, time to care, financial benefits and inclusivity in care and care decisions. It was noted that the ultrasound service was in the opposite direction from their homes to the obstetric service if participants needed to be referred for consultant opinion the same day. The significant underlying theme was the positive impact on mental wellbeing and patient experience in pregnancy when attending the service. Conclusions There was a high level of satisfaction with the service. Engagement of a broader spectrum of women would provide deeper insight into the service and robust evidence for any service development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interviewed graduates of a British university about the perceived benefits of their degrees. Found huge variation in long-term effects, which come from four main sources: individual student backgrounds, different reconstructions of the same academic experience, different personal circumstances while at college, and individual career experiences after graduation. Evaluation of an early literacy initiative in which free books and literacy information were given to 40 caregivers of infants. Compared book-related activity in the home before and 2 months after the program. Results showed significant increases in book ownership and frequency of mothers and babies looking at children's books together. (SK)

Foreign Bank Account Reporting (FBAR) has emerged recently as a litigation matter in several federal courts. While past cases primarily focused on the determination of willful versus nonwillful FBAR violations, recent cases bring to light issues that should lead Congress to revisit requirements and legislation specifically related to penalties. This paper examines four specific topics recently discussed in the courts: the assessment of penalties per FBAR form or per account; Eighth Amendment challenges; payment of penalties by an estate; and repatriation of assets to pay penalties. We address what the recent FBAR litigation tells us about compliance, enforcement, and policy and encourage Congress to revisit and make changes to the law. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Asks mentors of student teachers about their role in school-based initial teacher training. Concludes that mentors reach a plateau in improving skills through experience and that there are a number of tensions related to mentoring. Concludes that mentoring is a viable program but that mentors need continued training and support. (DSK)

Interviews with experienced British mentors working within a collaborative model of preservice teacher education examined their constructs of good mentors. They viewed mentors who provided regular time, immediate feedback, and sufficient availability as most effective and felt that new teachers needed training in their role as classroom teachers and in their wider professional commitments. Develops a theoretical framework for understanding the principles that regulate the expression and reception of "everyday" knowledge (attitudes about sex, drug usage) in the classroom.
