Abstract

Introduction: The research project's objective was to conduct a comprehensive horizon scan of Network Centric Warfare (NCW) technologies—specifically, Cyber, IoT/IoBT, AI, and Autonomous Systems. Recognised as pivotal force multipliers, these technologies are critical to reshaping the mission, design, structure, and operations of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), aligning with the Department of Defence (Defence)’s offset strategies and ensuring technological advantage, especially in the Indo-Pacific's competitive landscape. Research process: Employing a two-pronged research approach, the study first leveraged scientometric analysis, utilising informetric mapping software (VOSviewer) to evaluate emerging trends and their implications on defence capabilities. This approach facilitated a broader understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of defence technologies, identifying key areas for further exploration. The subsequent survey study, engaging 415 professionals and six experts across STEM, law enforcement, and ICT, aimed to assess the impact, deployment likelihood, and developmental timelines of the identified technologies. Findings: Key findings revealed significant overlaps in technology clusters, highlighting 11 specific technologies or trends as potential force multipliers for the ADF. Among these, Cyber and AI technologies were recognised for their immediate potential and urgency, suggesting a prioritisation for development investment. The analysis presented a clear imperative for urgent and prioritised technological investments, specifically in Cyber and AI technologies, followed by IoT/IoBT and autonomous systems technologies. The recommended strategic focus entails enhancing cyber security of critical infrastructure, optimising network communications, and harnessing smart sensors, among others. 18. A qualitative study exploring how occupational therapists embed spirituality into their practice

Abstract

Introduction: Spirituality is a concept central to healthcare practice, and in particular to occupational therapy. As a profession, influenced from early Judeo-Christian religious beginnings, occupational therapy has retained yet translated this as a commitment to holistic, person-centred practice. Occupational therapy holds the uniqueness of the individual, and meaningful and purposeful expressions of health and well-being through occupation, as central to professional practice. Set in the context of 21st century healthcare, this thesis explored how occupational therapists (n=4) working in the English National Health Service (NHS) embedded spirituality into daily practice. Methods: Two studies were undertaken, first a structured literature review and concept analysis, applying the method outlined by Walker & Avant (2011), to conceptualise spirituality as described in occupational therapy practice. Second, a qualitative study was undertaken, underpinned by an ethnographic approach, using participant-as-observer observation and follow up interviews to explore how occupational therapists embedded spirituality into everyday practice. Framework approach was used to guide analysis and interpret the large volume of unstructured textual data. Findings: Despite the difficulties defining spirituality occupational therapists appeared able to apply the underpinning core values and philosophy of the profession and embed spirituality in their practice. Practitioners found it more meaningful to describe spirituality in terms of how they applied the concept in, and through, practice by comprehending the values, needs and concerns of the individual as opposed to a consistent definition. Occupational therapists engaged with spirituality by concerning themselves with supporting patients experiencing vulnerability due to disruption in their health and well-being. This support was achieved by the occupational therapist uncovering the individual needs of the patient and through delivering person-centred care by explicitly addressing spirituality. The scope to embed spirituality was on occasion limited by organisational and contextual factors that restricted the potential to practice fully. Achieving organisational targets by adopting time constrained interventions was perceived as having a particularly limiting impact on embedding spirituality in practice. Conclusion: The Embedding Spirituality into Occupational Therapy (ESpiOT) model which emerged from the findings of this study is offered as a tool to guide practice, education and research into how spirituality is, and could be, embedded into occupational therapy practice.

20. Physical Mechanisms Sustaining Silica Production Following the Demise of the Diatom Phase of the North Atlantic Spring Phytoplankton Bloom During EXPORTS.

Abstract

Each spring, the North Atlantic experiences one of the largest open‐ocean phytoplankton blooms in the global ocean. Diatoms often dominate the initial phase of the bloom with succession driven by exhaustion of silicic acid. The North Atlantic was sampled over 3.5 weeks in spring 2021 following the demise of the main diatom bloom, allowing mechanisms that sustain continued diatom contributions to be examined. Diatom biomass was initially relatively high with biogenic silica concentrations up to 2.25 μmol Si L−1. A low initial silicic acid concentration of 0.1–0.3 μM imposed severe Si limitation of silica production and likely limited the diatom growth rate. Four storms over the next 3.5 weeks entrained silicic acid into the mixed layer, relieving growth limitation, but uptake limitation persisted. Silica production was modest and dominated by the >5.0 μm size fraction although specific rates were highest in the 0.6–5.0 μm size fraction over most of the cruise. Silica dissolution averaged 68% of silica production. The resupply of silicic acid via storm entrainment and silica dissolution supported a cumulative post‐bloom silica production that was 32% of that estimated during the main bloom event. Diatoms contributed significantly to new and to primary production after the initial bloom, possibly dominating both. Diatom contribution to organic‐carbon export was also significant at 40%–70%. Thus, diatoms can significantly contribute to regional biogeochemistry following initial silicic acid depletion, but that contribution relies on physical processes that resupply the nutrient to surface waters. Plain Language Summary: Each spring, one of the largest phytoplankton blooms in the global ocean occurs in the North Atlantic Ocean. One group of phytoplankton, the diatoms, often dominates the early bloom. Diatoms are unique among the phytoplankton as they require the element silicon to construct their cell walls. Dissolved silicon is in relatively short supply in the North Atlantic, prompting this study of how the availability of silicic acid controls the contribution of diatoms to the bloom. At the start of our expedition, extremely low silicic acid concentrations in surface waters indicated that a diatom bloom had already occurred. Experiments revealed strong silicon limitation of the remaining diatoms. A series of four storms over 3 weeks introduced pulses of silicic acid to surface waters partially alleviating Si limitation. As a result, diatoms were able to significantly contribute to primary productivity and to the export of organic carbon despite persistent silicon limitation. The results indicate that diatoms can play a significant biogeochemical role in the North Atlantic bloom following the initial depletion of silicic acid, but their contribution is regulated by physical processes that resupply the nutrient to surface waters. Such processes may enhance overall bloom productivity and its contribution to carbon sequestration. Abstract

We examine internal and external factors that build or thwart the career adaptability resources of migrant hotel workers. Drawing on qualitative data at two points in time over a 12-month period during COVID-19, results show that while some migrant workers changed roles and exited hotels, for most, job changes were a shorter-term, separation phenomenon, with migrants transitioning back to their employer within a year. Psychological, social, and human capital resources facilitated career adaptability, while psychoemotional support from managers and peers fostered the confidence of temporary migrants, and facilitated positive affect, which was integral to their openness to exploring alternate hospitality careers. Inhibitors to career adaptability included a lack of agency among temporary migrants, and career entrenchment of mid-career permanent migrants. Our model provides a fine-grained, holistic understanding of the antecedents of career adaptability, enriching career construction theory by clarifying the contexts that drive career adaptability in the evolving, COVID-19 context.
