Defect engineering of van der Waals semiconductors has been demonstrated as an effective approach to manipulate the structural and functional characteristics toward dynamic device controls, yet correlations between physical properties with defect evolution remain underexplored. Using proton irradiation, we observe an enhanced exciton-to-trion conversion of the atomically thin WS2. The altered excitonic states are closely correlated with nanopore induced atomic displacement, W nanoclusters, and zigzag edge terminations, verified by scanning transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence, and Raman spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculation suggests that nanopores facilitate formation of in-gap states that act as sinks for free electrons to couple with excitons. The ion energy loss simulation predicts a dominating electron ionization effect upon proton irradiation, providing further evidence on band perturbations and nanopore formation without destroying the overall crystallinity. This study provides a route in tuning the excitonic properties of van der Waals semiconductors using an irradiation-based defect engineering approach.

School-based educational programs are identified as an effective means to increase awareness and promote sun protective behaviours in young people. Regardless, the adolescent age group are difficult to influence, somewhat resistant to sun protection and esteem tanned skin. The ability of Pre-Service Teachers (PSTs) to develop sun safety education for adolescents was tested at a teacher education institution in Western Australia. More particularly, to create understandings of their ability to mobilise health literacy in sun safety education. Thirty PSTs studying secondary education developed three consecutive lesson plans for use with adolescent students of Year 7. The three lesson plans comprised learning activities (n=444), which were categorised as teaching either functional, interactive or critical health literacy. Results indicate a significantly greater than expected frequency of functional activities, suggesting that PSTs need specific training to support the planning and development of teaching and learning that promotes critical health literacy skills.

A gold surface is functionalized by chemisorption of the enantiopure N,N′-bis-[2,2′;5′,2″]tert-thiophene-5-yl methylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine (2T3N), a chiral oligothiophene derivative, via overnight incubation in a 2T3N ethanol solution. The Au|2T3N interface is characterized by x-ray photoelectron circular dichroism and comparing x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and electro-desorption results. Charge transmission at the Au|2T3N| solution interface is characterized by recording the cyclic voltammetry of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) reversible redox couple, finding a charge transfer rate constant, k°, variation from 1 × 10−1 to 3.3 × 10−2 cm s−1, when comparing the bare Au and the Au|2T3N interfaces, respectively. The "anomalous" high value of k° found for the chiral Au|2T3N interface can be rationalized on the basis of the chiral-induced spin selectivity effect, as further proved by magnetic–conductive atomic force microscopy measurements at room temperature. Media literacy campaigns champion systematic thinking and high elaboration in the fight against fake news. However, they often overlook an ancient tool for discrediting demagogues and destroying disinformation: satire. This essay explores how satirist Stephen Colbert used irony in his 2010 congressional testimony, arguing that Colbert’s shift from Socratic to Sophistic irony encouraged listeners to think for themselves through a more central information-processing route. The essay concludes that irony increases recognition of fake news, but warns that an overreliance on Sophistic irony undermines an appreciation of truth, and requires the reintroduction of Socratic irony as a counter balance.

In this paper it is experimentally demonstrated that the electron‐spin/molecular‐handedness interaction plays a fundamental role in the chiral recognition process. This conclusion is inferred comparing current versus potential (I–V) curves recorded using chiral electrode surfaces, which are obtained via chemisorption of an enantiopure thiophene derivative: 3,3′‐bibenzothiophene core functionalized with 2,2′‐bithiophene wings (BT2T4). The chiral recognition capability of these chiral‐electrodes is probed via cyclic voltammetry measurements, where, Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) capped with enantiopure BT2T4 (BT2T4@AgNP) are used as the chiral redox probe. Then, the interface handedness is explored by recording spin‐polarized I–V curves in spin‐dependent electrochemistry (SDE) and magnetic‐conductive atomic force microscopy (mc‐AFM) experiments. The quality of the interfaces is thoroughly cross‐checked using X‐ray photoemission spectroscopy, Raman, electrodesorption measurements, which further substantiate the metal(electrode)‐sulfur(thiophene) central role in the chemisorption process. Background: Pleural procedures are essential for the investigation and management of pleural disease and can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. There is a lack of pleural procedure complication data in the Australian and New Zealand region. Aims: To review pleural procedure practices at Wollongong Hospital with an emphasis on the assessment of complications, use of thoracic ultrasound (TUS), pathology results and comparison of findings with international data. Methods: Retrospective analysis of medical records was performed on pleural procedures identified through respiratory specialist trainee logbooks at Wollongong Hospital from January 2018 to December 2021. Comparison of complication rates was made to the British Thoracic Society 2011 a national pleural audit. Results: One hundred and twenty‐one pleural procedures were identified. There were 71 chest drains, 49 thoracocentesis and one indwelling pleural catheter (IPC) insertion. Ninety‐seven per cent of procedures were performed for pleural effusions and 3% for pneumothorax. This audit demonstrated a complication rate (excluding pain) of 16.9% for chest drains and 4.1% for thoracocentesis. This gave an overall complication event rate of 10.8% (excluding pain) for pleural procedures. There was no major bleeding, organ puncture, pleural space infection or death. Bedside TUS was used in 99% of procedures. Conclusion: Complication rates for pleural procedures performed by respiratory specialist trainees at Wollongong Hospital are comparable with international outcomes. This audit provides data for comparison on pleural procedure complication rates in Australia. Future studies are required to determine complication rates with IPCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent advances in 3D/2D heterostructures have opened up tremendous opportunities in building highly flexible and durable optoelectronic devices. However, the inherit lack of interfacial bonding and low surface energy of van der Waals surfaces limit the nucleation and growth of 3D materials. Enhancing wettability by providing a porous buffer is effective in growing compound semiconductors on graphene while van der Waals epitaxy of Ge remains challenging. Here, the nucleation of Ge has been significantly improved from an islanded mode to granular modes by using a TiN/AlN multilayered buffer prior to Ge/graphene integration. Highly textured Ge growth with dominating (111), (220), and (311) peaks are identified by x-ray diffraction. The microstructure of the buffer TiN/AlN demonstrates a polycrystalline quality with clean interfaces between each interlayer and the substrate. Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements along the lateral TiN/AlN interface identify a potential drop corresponding to the AlN phase. This contact potential difference between TiN and AlN is the key in generating the out-of-plane dipole moment that modifies the surface energy of the monolayer graphene, resulting in enhanced wettability of the Ge adatoms nucleated on top. Surface dipole induced nucleation of 3D semiconductor thin films on 2D materials via the proper design of buffer layer is fundamentally important to enhance the 3D/2D growth toward flexible optoelectronic applications. Introduction In July 2025, Australia will introduce a national Lung Cancer Screening Program (LCSP). Pulmonary nodule assessment and patient management are Program aspects anticipated to have major workforce implications. Aims * Demonstrate safe, advanced practice nursing relative to pulmonary nodule assessment and patient management * Improve capacity in respiratory physicians to attend to high-risk cases in a timelier manner Methodology Early 2023, clinical redesign of a regional public outpatients respiratory medicine specialist service in New South Wales included streamlined general practice referral pathways, nurse-led triage, rapid access pathway and pulmonary nodule assessment and surveillance, and consistency in diagnostic radiology reporting. During April-July 2023, two lung cancer nurse consultants evaluated all incidentally-found pulmonary nodules against evidence-based guidelines, provided recommendation for nodule management (with governance review), and communicated the plan to patients and their general practitioner. A 22-item validated Likert scale, with free text capability, was implemented to elicit multidisciplinary team members' perceptions of the value and safety of the clinic to patients, the team and broader outpatients service. Sentiment scores reflecting the level of respondents' perceptions of the clinic and the advanced practice role were generated. Content analysis helped to interpret some neutral and mildly negative sentiments. Results Eighteen respondents completed the questionnaire (August-September 2023). A sentiment score of 4.7 (out of a possible 5) suggests team members are very positive about the value and safety of the clinic to patients, team functioning and service efficiency. This score was affected by mildly negative responses to item 1 ("I fully understand the Specialist Lung Cancer Nurse Pulmonary Nodule Assessment Clinic"). This 12-week pilot was perceived to be too brief for team members to fully understand the scope of both the clinic and role. Conclusions This project highlights the critical importance of definition in the lung cancer nurse consultant role relative to Australia's imminent LCSP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
