Ectoparasitic cookiecutter sharks (Chondrichthyes: Squaliformes: Dalatiidae; Isistius) share common features for jaw and teeth structure, in particular, robust lower jaws and dignathic heterodonty (upper teeth crowns are more slender and shorter than the broader and longer lower teeth crowns). The jaws and teeth are well suited for feeding by excising a nearly symmetrical oval-flesh bite plug from a variety of prey species including marine mammals, fishes, and squids. There is considerable speculation regarding cookiecutter shark bite dynamics given that natural feeding behavior has not been observed. To elucidate cookiecutter shark bite dynamics, bites were experimentally simulated for the two cookiecutter shark species; the Cookiecutter Shark, Isistius brasiliensis (Quoy JRC, Gaimard, P (1824) Zoologie (3) Imprimerie royale) and the Largetooth Cookiecutter Shark, Isistius plutodus (Garrick JAF, Springer S (1964) Isistius plutodus, a new squaloid shark from the Gulf of Mexico. Copeia 678–682), using three-dimensional printed models of jaws with teeth. Bite simulations were conducted at standardized jaw bite-gape angles and ballistic gelatin was used to approximate prey flesh, from which aspect ratio analysis of bite wound geometrics was used to determine bite wound morphometrics for each species. The simulated bite experiment also was useful for assessing factors that potentially affect cookiecutter shark total length estimates when based on natural bite geometrics. In addition, the mechanics of producing experimental bites provide new insights related to the necessity for cookiecutter sharks to rotate their body to create nearly symmetrical oval bite wounds.

Mass-transport deposits often show a low-amplitude, “acoustically transparent” seismic response compared to unfailed sediments. This amplitude signature is often interpreted as a lack of coherent internal reflectivity caused by a loss of internal structure during transport and emplacement, and is widely used to delineate mass-transport deposits in sub-bottom profiler data. An apparent contradiction is that cores penetrating such “acoustically transparent” deposits can sometimes retrieve well-stratified sediments that show little evidence of deformation.In this study we examine the variation in the single-channel seismic amplitude response with changing heterogeneity using synthetic seismic modelling. We model the internal structure of mass-transport deposits as a two-component binarised random medium, where the lateral correlation length is used to artificially control the degree of internal deformation/scale of internal structure, while maintaining the magnitude of the internal reflectivity constant. We construct two synthetic models: i) a simplified single-source marine example and ii) a multi-source example based on a real world “acoustically transparent” mass-transport deposit imaged by a dense network of AUV sub-bottom profiles in the Black Sea. We use 2-D elastic finite-difference modelling to model the seismic response (at sub-bottom profiler bandwidths) of an ensemble of both synthetic models with varying geostatistical parameters and random seeds for the mass-transport deposit zones. For the single-source synthetic model a reduction in observed amplitude with reduced lateral scale length is consistently observed across a range of vertical correlation lengths. For the real world Black Sea example, with realistic elastic and geostatistical parameters based on cone-penetration tests and physical property measurements from sediment cores, we find that when the lateral scale length of the random medium is around 1 m, recorded seismic amplitudes are, on average, reduced by ∼15% relative to unfailed sediments.We conclude that relatively small amounts of deformation at scales larger than the dominant seismic wavelength are, in general, able to a generate significant decrease in seismic amplitude, without requiring a reduction in the average reflectivity. Our synthetic modelling results should discourage interpretation of the internal structure of mass-transport deposits based on seismic amplitudes alone as “acoustically transparent” mass-transport deposits may still preserve coherent, metre-scale internal structure. In addition, the minimum scale of heterogeneity required to produce a reduction in seismic amplitudes is likely much larger than the diameter of sediment cores, meaning that such mass-transport deposits may still appear well-stratified and undeformed when cored.

In an ever more challenging context for the acquisition of seismic data in the Mediterranean Sea, reprocessing to improve the quality of legacy data has become increasingly important. This work presents the newly reprocessed, open access dataset SALTFLU acquired in the Algerian basin by the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS) in 2012. We apply a ‘broadband’ reprocessing strategy adapted for offset-limited (3km streamer for a target 4 km below the sea level) airgun reflection seismic data acquired in deep water settings. We then assess if the reprocessed images provide new geological insights on the Mediterranean sub-surface. The workflow relies on an integrated approach combining geophysics and geological interpretation to iteratively build the velocity model. In this way we aim to tackle some of the challenges linked to imaging deep complex geological structures containing high velocity contrasts with 2-D, offset-limited seismic data. We first broaden the bandwidth of the data through multi-domain de-noising, deghosting and a source designature using an operator derived from the seabed reflection. We then perform iterative migration velocity analysis, pre-stack time migration and multiple attenuation in the Radon domain to obtain time-migrated images. The initial velocity model is derived from the resulting time migration velocities, and geologically driven model updates are generated using a combination of travel-time tomography, seismic interpretation of the major salt horizons and velocity gradient flooding. The gradient flooding aims to reproduce the large scale first-order velocity variations, while the travel-time tomography aims to resolve the smaller second-order velocity variations. The results improve our deep geological knowledge of the under-explored Algerian basin down to the base salt and the pre-salt. Fluid indicators are imaged within the Plio-Quaternary of the Algerian basin, which we interpret as thermogenic or biogenic gas sourced from either the Messinian Upper Unit or from the pre-salt, migrating through a hydro-fractured salt. The reprocessed data image lateral and vertical seismic facies variation within the Messinian units that could shed new light on the tectono-stratigraphic processes acting during the Messinian Salinity Crisis. It also reveals numerous previously unresolved volcanic structures within the Formentera basin.

Compared to unfailed sediments, mass-transport deposits are often characterised by a low-amplitude response in single-channel seismic reflection images. This “acoustic transparency” amplitude signature is widely used to delineate mass-transport deposits and is conventionally interpreted as a lack of coherent internal reflectivity due to a loss of preserved internal structure caused by mass-transport processes. In this study we examine the variation in the single-channel seismic response with changing heterogeneity using synthetic 2-D elastic seismic modelling. We model the internal structure of mass-transport deposits as a two-component random medium, using the lateral correlation length (ax) as a proxy for the degree of internal deformation. The average internal reflectivity is held approximately constant with increasing deformation by fixing the two component sediment lithologies to have realistic P-wave velocity and density based on sediment core measurements from the study area. For a controlled single-source synthetic model a reduction in observed amplitude with reduced ax is consistently observed across a range of vertical correlation lengths (az). For typical autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) sub-bottom profiler acquisition parameters, in a simulated mass-transport deposit with realistic geostatistical properties, we find that when ax≈1 m, recorded seismic amplitudes are, on average, reduced by ∼25 % relative to unfailed sediments (ax≫103 m). We also observe that deformation significantly larger than core scale (ax>0.1 m) can generate a significant amplitude decrease. These synthetic modelling results should discourage interpretation of the internal structure of mass-transport deposits based on seismic amplitudes alone, as acoustically transparent mass-transport deposits may still preserve coherent, metre-scale internal structure. Tissue clearing technologies can greatly improve the depth and accuracy with which the three-dimensional structure of tissues, especially those of th*-e nervous system, can be visualized. A review of the present literature suggests that the growing diversity and sophistication of various approaches have contributed to the expansion of this method to a greater variety of tissue types, experimental conditions, and imaging modalities. In the proof-of-concept study presented in this paper, a simplified and modified version of the tissue clearing method CUBIC (clear, unobstructed brain imaging cocktails and computational analysis) was used in conjunction with fluorescent staining and immunohistochemistry to illustrate the three-dimensional structure and molecular characteristics of inflammatory and degenerative activity in the mouse optic nerve. Based on the studies summarized in this mini-review, and our impression from using the mCUBIC method, it appears that tissue clearing could be a viable approach revealing three-dimensional histological features of myelin-rich tissues under normal conditions and after injury.

A case of combined spontaneous left ventricular aneurysm and pseudoaneurysm in Behcet's disease (BD) has been reported. The use of postmortem computed tomography in forensic medicine, in addition to conventional autopsy, is now a standard procedure in several countries. However, the large number of cases, the large amount of data, and the lack of postmortem radiology experts have pushed researchers to develop solutions that are able to automate diagnosis by applying deep learning techniques to postmortem computed tomography images. While deep learning techniques require a good understanding of image analysis and mathematical optimization, the goal of this review was to provide to the community of postmortem radiology experts the key concepts needed to assess the potential of such techniques and how they could impact their work.

BackgroundSevere acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), can be detected in respiratory samples by real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or other molecular methods. Accessibility of diagnostic testing for COVID-19 has been limited by intermittent shortages of supplies required for testing, including flocked nasopharyngeal (FLNP) swabs.MethodsWe developed a 3-dimensional printed nasopharyngeal (3DP) swab as a replacement of the FLNP swab. The performance of 3DP and FLNP swabs were compared in a clinical trial of symptomatic patients at 3 clinical sites (n = 291) using 3 SARS-CoV-2 emergency use authorization tests: a modified version of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) RT-PCR Diagnostic Panel and 2 commercial automated formats, Roche Cobas and NeuMoDx.ResultsThe cycle threshold—C(t)—values from the gene targets and the RNase P gene control in the CDC assay showed no significant differences between swabs for both gene targets (P = .152 and P = .092), with the RNase P target performing significantly better in the 3DP swabs (P ConclusionsThe 3DP swabs were equivalent to standard FLNP in 3 testing platforms for SARS-CoV-2. Given the need for widespread testing, 3DP swabs printed onsite are an alternate to FLNP that can rapidly scale in response to acute needs when supply chain disruptions affect availability of collection kits.

The nasopharyngeal swab is a critical component of the COVID-19 testing kit. Supply chain remains greatly impacted by the pandemic. Teams from USF Health Radiology and Northwell Health System developed a 3D-printed stopgap alternative. This descriptive study details the workflow and provides guidance for hospital-based 3D printing labs to leverage the design to make a positive impact on the pandemic. Swab use is also outlined, and the early information regarding clinical use is described, including an ongoing multicenter trial methodology.

BACKGROUND Accurate quantitative data of the adult bony orbital volume and dimension are needed for treatment optimization. In the present study, the authors aim to evaluate adult orbital volume and corresponding linear dimensions according to age, volume, and individual symmetry. METHODS Seventy computerized tomography facial scans of adults were randomly chosen from an institutional database and 3-dimensionally reconstructed. Studies were excluded for orbital pathology or incomplete radiographic data. Anatomic landmarks were marked. Interval linear distances and orbital volumes were calculated. Data were analyzed using paired T-tests, independent T-tests, linear regression analysis, and 1-way analysis of variance. RESULTS A total of 140 orbits from 70 patients were analyzed (female = 35, male = 35), ranging from 20 to 88 years of age. Orbital volume was similar between an individual's left and right side; however, a difference was observed in vertical orbital height, orbital width, inferior orbital rim position, orbital roof length, orbital width, and medial orbital wall length (0.45, 0.64, 0.4, 0.77, 0.97, and 5.1 mm, respectively; P

Geothermal heat flux (GHF), coupled with subglacial topography and hydrology, influences the flow of the overlying Antarctic ice sheet. GHF is related to crustal and lithospheric structure and composition and tectonothermal evolution, and is also modulated by subglacial sedimentary basins and bedrock morphology. Despite its importance for both solid earth and cryosphere studies, our knowledge of Antarctic GHF heterogeneity remains limited compared to other continents- especially at regional scale. This is due to the paucity of direct measurements and the spatial gap wrt much larger scale geophysical proxies for GHF, based on continental-scale magnetic and seismological predictions that also differ considerably from each other in several regions. To reduce this major knowledge gap, the international community is increasingly active in analysing geophysical, geological and glaciological datasets to help constrain GHF (e.g. Burton-Johnson et al., SCAR-SERCE White Paper, 2020). Here we focus on 4D Antarctica- an ESA project that aims to help link bedrock, crust, lithosphere and GHF studies, by analysing recent airborne and satellite-derived potential field datasets. We present our recent aeromagnetic, aerogravity and satellite data compilations for 5 study regions, including the Amundsen Sea Embayment sector of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (e.g. Dziadek et al., 2021- Communications Earth & Environment) and the Wilkes Subglacial Basin (WSB), the Recovery glacier catchment, the South Pole and Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains and East Antarctic Rift region. We apply Curie Depth Point (CDP) estimation on existing aeromagnetic datasets and compilations in our study regions conformed with SWARM satellite magnetic data (Ebbing et al., 2021- Scientific Reports). We tested the application of different methods, including the centroid (e.g. Martos et al., 2017, GRL) and Bayesian inversion approaches of Curie depth and uncertainty (e.g. Mather and Fullea, 2019- Solid Earth) and defractal and geostatistical methods (e.g. Carrillo-de la Cruz et al., 2021- Geothermics). We then compare our CDP results with crust and lithosphere thickness and interpretations of crustal and lithospheric setting. Using our new aeromagnetic interpretations we define Precambrian and early Paleozoic subglacial basement in East Antarctica that is mostly concealed beneath Phanerozoic sedimentary basins and ice sheet cover. This enables us to discuss whether different basement provinces differ in terms of CDP estimates (as expected), or if these are either not or only partially resolved. A particularly informative case is the WSB. Here our magnetic assessments of GHF heterogeneity for the Terre Adelie Craton, Wilkes Terrane and Ross Orogen can be indirectly tested by exploiting independent geological and geophysical information derived from their Australians correlatives, namely the Gawler and Curnamona cratons and the Delamerian Orogen. Our Curie depth estimates yield geologically reasonable thermal boundary conditions required to initialise new thermal modelling efforts in several study areas. However, developing 3D models of crust and lithosphere thickness and intracrustal composition (as a proxy for the ranges of radiogenic heat production and thermal conductivity) with reasonably detailed crustal architecture, derived from both potential field and seismological datasets is a key next step to constrain Antarctic geothermal heat flux heterogeneity at higher-resolution ice stream scale.

Gastrointestinal bleeding that originates in the small intestine is often difficult to diagnose. Bleeding from a small intestinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is rare, with congenital AVMs more commonly located in the rectum or sigmoid. There is a relative paucity of cases reported in the literature. In the gastrointestinal tract, it can cause acute and chronic bleeding, which can be fatal. Although the incidence of small bowel AVMs is quite low, such lesions can be identified as the bleeding source in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) harbouring severe, transfusion-dependent anaemia. It can be exceedingly difficult to localise and diagnose gastrointestinal tract bleeding, particularly in cases of occult small bowel AVMs. CT angiography and capsule endoscopy can help to establish the diagnosis. Laparoscopy is an appropriate and beneficial treatment modality for small bowel resection. The authors present the case of a primigravida woman in her late 20s diagnosed with a symptomatic transfusion-dependent anaemia during her pregnancy. She developed OGIB and despite no history of chronic liver disease became encephalopathic. Due to her physical deterioration and uncertain diagnosis, her caesarean section was performed at 36+6 weeks to expedite investigations and treatment. She was diagnosed with a jejunal AVM and underwent coiled embolisation of her superior mesenteric artery. She became haemodynamically unstable and underwent a laparotomy and small bowel resection. A full non-invasive liver screen was negative, however, her MRI liver described multiple focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) lesions raising the possibility of FNH syndrome in the context of a previous AVM malformation. A prompt stepwise, multimodality diagnostic approach is required to prevent patient morbidity and mortality.

Three-dimensional (3D) modeling and printing in medicine have emerged to encompass every aspect of medical applications. This ranges from education, illustration, and treatment, as well as patient care whether for purposes of diagnosis or treatment and surgical planning. In the past few decades, these novel tools have shown promising utility to help radiologists and the medical team to improve quality of patient care and outcomes via 3D printing application and utilization. This workflow will be illustrated through a ventricular septal defect (VSD) case at which 3D analysis was critical in the assessment and treatment planning of the patient's underlying medical condition.

When skeletal remains are found scattered or in fragmentary conditions, the establishment of a biological profile of unknown individuals can be proven difficult. Consequently, multiple methods to ascertain the sex of the individual must be developed. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that computed tomographic (CT)-derived 3D models of lumbar vertebrae could capture the unique morphologies of all five lumbar vertebrae to create equations for sex identification. The models were selected from a modern population consisting of 154 males and females that measured 30 standard linear measurements, the vertebral body wedging angle, and five aspect ratios. These measurements were then used to develop discriminant function equations for sex identification. Each lumbar level was analyzed individually as well as part of the entire lumbar spinal column. The results of this study showed that L1-L5 vertebrae can be used in sex determination with an 81.2-85.1% accuracy. When all five vertebrae are used in conjunction, the accuracy is 92.2%. The accuracy of the sex estimation found in this study for all lumbar vertebrae reinforces the distinct dimorphism between sexes while also providing forensic practitioners with more options or tools for their analyses.

INTRODUCTION Lateral cephalometric radiographs (LCR) have been the standard tool used for cephalometric analysis in craniofacial surgery. Over the past decade, a three-dimensional (3D) revolution in cephalometric analysis and surgical planning has been underway. To date, research has not validated whether cephalometric measurements taken from two-dimensional (2D) and 3D data sources are equivalent and interchangeable. The authors sought to compare angular cephalometric measurements taken with 2D and 3D modalities. METHODS Sixty-two head CT scans (36 females, 26 males) with an average age of 63 ± 20 years were studied. Twelve cephalometric angular measurements were taken from 3D reconstructed skulls using the software package Mimics 19.0 (Materialize; Leuven, Belgium). These same facial angles were measured from 2D lateral cephalograms reconstructed from the original CT scans using Dolphin 11.9. The objective of this project was to document the efficacy of part-to-part comparison of computed tomography (CT)-derived three-dimensional (3D) models of the lumbar spine in forensic personal identification. By testing the methodology, this study aimed to provide a new technique of quantifiable (through a percent match) positive identification that meets the explicit requirements of the Daubert ruling and the challenges set forth in the 2009 NAS report. Ante-mortem (AM) and simulated post-mortem (PM) models of the lumbar vertebrae (L1-L5) for 30 unique individuals were compared via part comparison analyses. The threshold of ±0.5mm with at least a 90% match was considered a positive identification. Using this threshold, the part comparison results had a perfect identification rate with no false positives and no false negative matches. A ROC curve was generated with a score of 1, signifying a "perfect" sensitivity and specificity, at a cut-off value of 65.5%. On average positive IDs had a 94.7% percent match within the established threshold, while negative IDs had an average of 21.4%. In looking at the impact of different components of the biological profile, age and sex of the unknown individual played a minimal role in the percent match for both a positive and a negative ID. Lumbar level also played a minor role in in both the positive and negative percent match. The real-world application of 3D part-to-part comparison on AM and simulated PM scans demonstrate the potential usefulness of this technology in forensic identification.

Background Surgical strategy in vestibular schwannomas may require subtotal resection to preserve neurologic function. Residual tumor growth pattern and contrast enhancement in the immediate postresection period remain uncertain. We sought to evaluate changes in the enhancement pattern and volume of vestibular schwannomas after subtotal resection in the immediate postoperative period. Methods Volumetric analysis of tumor size and enhancement patterns of vestibular schwannomas were measured on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans obtained within 3 days of surgery, 3 months after surgery, and 1 year after surgery. Results Nineteen patients were eligible for inclusion in the study (9 male and 10 female) with an average age of 47 years. Contrast enhancement was absent in 6 of 19 (32%) of cases on the immediate postresection MRI with return of expected enhancement on subsequent studies. Volumetric analysis identified that tumors decreased in size by an average of 35% in the first 3 months (P = 0.025) after resection and 46% in the first year after resection (P Conclusions Vestibular schwannomas that undergo subtotal resection tend to decrease in size over the first 3 months after resection. Residual tumor volume may fail to enhance on the immediate postresection MRI. Both of these findings could lead surgeons to misinterpret degree of resection after surgery and have implications for clinical decision making and research reporting in the scientific literature for vestibular schwannomas after subtotal resection.

Seismic images may not properly resolve such structure because seismic reflections are fundamentally limited in lateral resolution by the source bandwidth. The relatively weak seismic diffractions, instead, encode information on subwavelength‐scale structure, with superior illumination. In this paper, we compare diffraction imaging to conventional, full‐wavefield seismic imaging to characterize MTCs. We apply a seismic diffraction imaging workflow based on plane‐wave destruction filters to two 2D marine multichannel seismic profiles from the Gulf of Cadiz. We observe that MTCs generate a large amount of diffracted energy relative to the unfailed confining sediments. The diffraction images show that some of this energy is localized along existing discontinuities imaged by the full‐wavefield images. We demonstrate that, in combination with full‐wavefield images, diffraction images can be utilized to better discriminate the lateral extent of MTCs, particularly for thin bodies. We suggest that diffraction images may be a more physically correct alternative to commonly used seismic discontinuity attributes derived from full‐wavefield images. Finally, we outline an approach to utilize the out‐of‐plane diffractions generated by the 3D structure of MTCs, normally considered a nuisance in 2D seismic processing. A better understanding of the evolution of bottom current circulation and associated deposits is significant for many applications including paleoclimatology and geological hazard. Besides the large contourite drifts, bottom currents may generate fields of large sediment waves that, depending on their height and velocity of migration, may pose severe risk for infrastructures. Conversely, the time span of their paleoceanographic record is generally relatively short. We use bathymetry data, sub-bottom and seismic reflection profiles and legacy oceanographic data to analyze the sediment waves occurring in a deep environment (from 2400 to 3800 m water depth at the foot of the Malta Escarpment in the Mediterranean Sea) to understand their evolution in time, their significance for paleoceanography, and their relation to present day hydrographic conditions. In the absence of direct stratigraphic information, we use the information from nearby studies and from ODP Site 964 and DSDP Site 374 to constrain the age of the sedimentary successions. We discover that these waves (about 2.5 km in wavelength, 50 m in height, with crest sub-perpendicular to the continental slope trend) have been steadily growing and migrating northward since about 500 ka, although an irregular growth and unsteady migration is distinguishable since about 1800 ka. The waves are generated by predominantly alongslope southward flowing bottom currents compatible with modern hydraulic conditions (mean flow speed of ~5 cm s−1, peaks of 15 cm s−1). The rate of crest migration (~ 2.0–3.2 mm a−1) and the average sedimentation rate (0.64–0.69 mm a−1) are unusually high for deep sea environments away from turbidity currents paths. We infer that the steady development of sediment waves is produced by a drastic increase in sediment input to the Ionian Basin resulting from the tectonic uplift in NE Sicily and Calabria and the onset of a relatively steady, low energy bottom current regime following the Mid-Pleistocene Transition. We attempt to extract information on orbital cyclicity preserved in the seismic record from the power spectra of virtual seismic traces from the well preserved succession of 5 visually discernible, regularly spaced sub-units consisting of alternation of high-amplitude and low-reflectivity packages within the last 500 ka. Peaks in the power spectra can be identified around orbital obliquity and precession periodicities, while eccentricity appears not to be recorded. We discuss the results of seismic cyclicity analysis relative to uncertainties of stratigraphic and petrophysical constraints. The sediment waves along the foot of the Malta escarpment are an excellent candidate for the extraction of a long, continuous and high resolution sedimentary record of the paleo circulation changes and climate cycles in the Mediterranean Sea since about 500 ka., peer-reviewed

Postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) is a standard image modality used in forensic death investigations. Case- and audience-specific visualizations are vital for identifying relevant findings and communicating them appropriately. Different data types and visualization methods exist in 2D and 3D, and all of these types have specific applications. 2D visualizations are more suited for the radiological assessment of PMCT data because they allow the depiction of subtle details. 3D visualizations are better suited for creating visualizations for medical laypersons, such as state attorneys, because they maintain the anatomical context. Visualizations can be refined by using additional techniques, such as annotation or layering. Specialized methods such as 3D printing and virtual and augmented reality often require data conversion. The resulting data can also be used to combine PMCT data with other 3D data such as crime scene laser scans to create crime scene reconstructions. Knowledge of these techniques is essential for the successful handling of PMCT data in a forensic setting. In this review, we present an overview of current visualization techniques for PMCT.

Such interplay between along-slope and down-slope sedimentary processes is one of the mechanisms by which ‘mixed turbidite–contourite systems’ can originate. However, bottom currents flow over large areas of the seafloor, including continental slopes characterized by deeply incised submarine canyons rather than channel levées. In these cases, a direct interaction between along-slope and down-slope currents is, theoretically, unlikely to take place. In this study, oceanographic, swath bathymetry, multichannel seismic data and sediment cores are used to investigate a 25 km long, 10 km wide and up to 0.5 km thick deep-sea late Quaternary deposit that sits adjacent to the north-west flank of one of the major canyons in the North Atlantic, the São Vicente Canyon, in the Alentejo Basin (south-west Iberian margin). The area receives the influence of a strong bottom current, the Mediterranean Outflow Water, which has swept the continental slope at different water depth ranges during glacial and interglacial periods. Architectural patterns and sediment characteristics suggest that this sedimentary body, named Marquês de Pombal Drift, is the result of the interaction between the Mediterranean Outflow Water (particularly during cold periods) and turbidity currents flowing along the São Vicente Canyon. Because the canyon is incised significantly deeper (ca 1.5 km) than the thickness of turbidity currents, an additional process, in comparison to earlier models, is needed to allow the interaction with the Mediterranean Outflow Water and transport sediment out of the canyon. In the São Vicente Canyon, and likely in other canyons worldwide, interaction of turbidity currents with contour currents requires intermediate nepheloid layers that export the finer-grained fraction of turbidity currents out of the canyon at the boundary between major water masses, This research received funding by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovating programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant via project ITN-SLATE (grant agreement No 721403). 3D printing has positively impacted the shortage of nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Multiple designs are described, as was the thought process and trials leading to the current design from the University of South Florida (USF) Health and Northwell Health have that has been printed an estimated 25 million times. This chapter includes how a local 3D printing community interacted with hospital administration, industry, and the community at large during their intent to freely provide an open-source design to increase diagnostic coronavirus testing.

Mortality after gluteal augmentation with fat transfer techniques is extremely high. Placement of fat subcutaneously versus in the gluteal musculature, or both, is considerably debated. The purpose of this study was to radiographically show the anatomical difference in live subjects in different procedural positions: the flexed or "jackknife" versus prone position. A total of 10 women underwent computed tomographic scanning of the pelvis with venous phase run-off in both the jackknife and prone positions. A computed tomography-specialized radiologist then reviewed images and measured distances from the inferior and superior gluteal veins to the skin and muscle. Three-dimensional imaging and analysis were also performed. Measurements were significantly shorter with respect to distance from skin to muscle, skin to vessel, and vessel to muscle observed from inferior and superior gluteal veins in the jackknife versus the prone position. Three-dimensional modeling showed a significant reduction in the volume and inferior and superior gluteal vein diameters when in the jackknife position. When placed in the jackknife position for gluteal augmentation with fat transfer, extreme caution should be taken with the injecting cannula, as the underlying muscle is only 2 to 3 cm deep. Three-dimensional analysis showed narrowed and reduced volume of gluteal vasculature when in the jackknife position; this is a possible indication of torsion or stretch on the vessel around the pelvic rim that could cause vein avulsion injury from the pressurized fat within the piriform space.

Mass-transport complexes are characterised by complex, laterally discontinuous internal structure, such as pressure ridges, local shear zones and intact translated blocks. Their internal structure is often poorly imaged by seismic reflection techniques, which are fundamentally limited in lateral resolution by the bandwidth of the seismic source. Diffraction imaging, instead, directly images subsurface heterogeneity by primarily imaging the diffracted part of the seismic wavefield. We apply seismic diffraction imaging to two marine multi-channel seismic profiles containing mass-transport complexes from the Gulf of Cadiz (south west Iberian Margin). We observe that mass-transport complexes generate a large amount of diffracted energy relative to the un-failed sediments. We demonstrate that, in combination with conventional seismic reflection images, diffraction images can be used to better discriminate the lateral extent (runout) of mass-transport complexes, particularly for thin bodies that are not well-resolved using conventional imaging. We suggest that diffraction imaging may have similar applications for marine geohazard assessment to seismic discontinuity attributes, such as the similarity attribute, with the advantage of being closer to a true image of the heterogeneous subsurface. Applying diffraction imaging to image mass-transport complexes from 2-D seismic data is challenging, but may provide some unique insights that are not available from conventional reflection images.

European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2020, 4-8 May 2020, Contourite deposits are generated by the interplay between deepwater bottom-currents, sediment supply and seafloor topography. The Gulf of Cadiz, in the Southwest Iberian margin, is a famous example of extensive contourite deposition driven by the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW), which exits the Strait of Gibraltar, flows northward following the coastline and distributes the sediments coming from the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers. The MOW and related contourite deposits affect the stability of the SW Iberian margin in several ways: on one hand it increases the sedimentation rate, favoring the development of excess pore pressure, while on the other hand, by depositing sand it allows pore water pressure to dissipate, potentially increasing the stability of the slope. In the Gulf of Cadiz, grain size distribution of contourite deposits is influenced by the seafloor morphology, which splits the MOW in different branches, and by the alternation of glacial and interglacial periods that affected the MOW hydrodynamic regimes. Fine clay packages alternates with clean sand formations according to the capacity of transport of the bottom-current in a specific area. Generally speaking, coarser deposits are found in the areas of higher MOW flow energy, such as in the shallower part of the slope or in the area closer to the Strait of Gibraltar, while at higher water depths the sedimentation shifts to progressively finer grain sizes as the MOW gets weaker. Previous works show that at present-day the MOW flows at a maximum depth of 1400 m, while during glacial periods the bottom-current could have reached higher depths. In this study we derived the different maximum depths at which the MOW flowed by analyzing the distribution of sands at different depths along the Alentejo basin slope, in the Northern sector of the Gulf of Cadiz. Here we show how changes in sand distribution along slope, within the stratigraphic units deposited between the Neogene and the present day, are driven by glacial – interglacial period alternation that influenced the hydrodynamic regime of the MOW. By deriving the depositional history of sand in the Alentejo basin, we are able to correlate directly the influence that climatic cycles had on the MOW activity. Furthermore, by interpreting new multi-channel seismic profiles we have been able to derive a detailed facies characterization of the uppermost part of the Gulf of Cadiz. An accurate definition of sand distribution along slope plays an important role in evaluating the stability of the slope itself, e.g. to understand if the sediments may be subjected to excess pore pressure generation. As sand distribution is a direct function of the bottom-current transport capacity, the ultimate goal of this study is to understand how climate variations can affect the stability of submarine slope by depositing contourite-related sand, This project has received funding from the European Union’sHorizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grantagreement No 721403

European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2020, 4-8 May 2020, Outcrop examples of mass-transport complexes (MTCs) often show a complex internal fabric which reflects disaggregation, deformation and entrainment that occurred during transport and emplacement. This can include intense folding, included blocks of substratum and internal shear zones. Seismic reflection images often cannot properly image this internal fabric as the scale of such structure is usually below the effective resolution. This can limit seismic interpretation to characterising only the overall morphology of the deposits (the top and basal reflectors). Seismic reflections are primarily generated by smooth, laterally continuous interfaces. Discontinuities at or below the scale of the seismic wavelength instead generate seismic diffractions (“diffraction hyperbolae” in unmigrated images). Diffractions are often ignored during seismic processing as they are generally lower in amplitude than reflections, though they do not suffer from the same lateral resolution limit as reflections so are potentially sensitive to smaller scale structure. We suggest that the discontinuous internal fabric of MTCs will generate a significant amount of diffraction energy relative to unfailed sediments. The main goal of this study is to use diffraction imaging to image the small-scale, heterogeneous internal fabric of MTCs. We demonstrate this using two high-resolution, multi-channel 2-D marine seismic profiles (3.125 m CMP spacing, 500 m maximum offset) acquired in 2018 and 2019 as part of the INSIGHT project to investigate submarine geohazards in the Gulf of Cadiz. Profile 1 intersects the Marques de Pombal reverse fault and shows a series of stacked MTCs (~1 s TWTT from top to bottom) in the footwall, thought to be related to episodic fault activity. Profile 2 is located in the Portimão Bank area and contains two large MTCs thought to be related to the mobilisation of a salt diapir. The diffraction imaging method proceeds as i) dip-guided plane-wave destruction to separate reflected and diffracted wavefields; ii) velocity analysis by cascaded constant velocity migrations of the diffraction wavefield; iii) post-stack Kirchhoff time migration of the diffraction wavefield. The unmigrated profiles show that the MTC bodies do generate more internal diffractions than the surrounding unfailed sediments. We also observe large contributions of diffraction energy from the rugose top and base of the MTCs, the rugose top salt interface and from faults within the unfailed sediments. The migrated diffraction images reveal distinct internal structure, thought to represent rafted blocks, ramps and both extensional and compressional faulting. The envelope of the diffraction image is used as an overlay on the conventional reflection image to guide interpretation and highlight potential diffractors. This allows interpretation of thin MTCs and improved delineation of their lateral extent (runout) above conventional reflection images. Diffraction imaging has previously been used to image heterogeneous geology such as fracture networks, channel systems and karst topography. Here we apply the technique to study the internal fabric of MTCs. The resulting images resolve small-scale internal structure that is not well resolved by conventional reflection images. Many forensic institutes worldwide use postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) as a standard imaging modality. A variety of techniques, such as visualization, polygonization, volumetry, autopsy planning and 3D printing, require knowledge about case-specific anatomy and pathologies. The means by which voxels are assigned additional information regarding the anatomical structure or tissue is called image segmentation (sometimes labeling). In this article, we introduce the most relevant segmentation techniques used on forensic medical data. We provide information about different software packages that allow for the segmentation of PMCT data and discuss data requirements. Finally, we introduce a variety of different applications in forensic imaging, in which segmentation techniques have proven to be useful, including applications in forensic anthropology.

Headache is a common presentation to the physician. Although most causes of a headache in pregnancy are benign, the pregnant woman is at risk of a life-threatening secondary headache such as eclampsia, venous sinus thrombosis or posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES). Pregnancy and the puerperium are prothrombotic risk factors. Although the aetiology of PRES remains to be fully elucidated, hypertension with failed autoregulation results in brain oedema. An alternative hypothesis includes endothelial injury and hypoperfusion leading to an alteration in the integrity of the blood-brain barrier. It occurs in complex, systemic conditions such as pre-eclampsia, following bone marrow transplantation, chemotherapy, sepsis and autoimmune diseases. The most common clinical presentation is headache, altered alertness, seizures and visual disturbance such as hemianopia, visual neglect and cortical blindness. It can also develop in normotensive individuals. Symmetric vasogenic oedema in a watershed distribution involving the parieto-occipital regions are typically evident on MRI. Management is determined by the underlying aetiological risk factor. The authors present the case of a 32-year-old multiparous woman presenting with tonic-clonic seizures 16 days following an elective caesarean section. Her pregnancy was complicated by hypertension and headache. There was no history of pre-eclampsia. She required intubation and ventilation. The diagnosis of PRES was established on MRI. Early recognition and treatment provide a favourable prognosis as the clinical symptoms and imaging characteristics are reversible in a large cohort of affected individuals.

INTRODUCTION Direct anthropometric and three-dimensional (3D) photogrammetry measurements have been used extensively in cleft/craniofacial surgery to assess morphological changes and surgical outcomes. Craniofacial procedures alter the sagittal projection of periorbital bony prominences. Mulliken described a method of measuring their projection relative to the corneal plane but is impractical in clinical practice. Three-dimensional photogrammetry may offer a solution; however, the cornea is not visualized on this. The authors propose to develop new normative measurements of facial projection relative to the pupil. METHODS Five 3D photographs were taken of 5 individuals using Vectra M5 camera. Facial projection measurements were taken of the sagittal projection of the bilateral periorbital landmarks and nasal radix relative to the pupil using Mirror 3D analysis. Objective: Fields such as biological anthropology, forensic anthropology, archaeology, and mummy studies have increased the use medical imaging, such as computed tomography (CT), to analyze human remains through virtual examination. When predicting chronological age from virtual anatomy, methods developed on skeletal collections do not always produce accurate age predictions when applied to virtual anatomy. Age estimation methods developed specifically for medical imaging can improve accuracy of chronological age prediction when examining virtual anatomy. The present study examines the relationship between attenuation of trabecular bone from the os coxae and chronological age using CT scanning data. Materials and Methods: A sample of 324 CT scans of living and cadaveric individuals were randomly selected from a CT scan database and used to identify a correlation between trabecular bone CT attenuation in four regions of the os coxae and chronological age. The four regions included trabecular bone deep to the auricular surface, pubic symphysis, posterior superior iliac spine, and the ischial tuberosity. Results: Through cross validation, the trabecular bone deep to the pubic symphysis, posterior superior iliac spine, and ischial tuberosity resulted in the best prediction models based on model testing. Model testing identified models with adjusted R2 values of 0.83 and 0.86 for combine male/female bone attenuation and only female bone density, respectively. Discussion: The resulting models, when used in relation with CT scanning data, provide a quantitative method that predicts chronological age and can be used in situations when remains are recently deceased fleshed individuals.

Objectives To present a technique for the use of computed tomography (CT) scans in opportunistic screening for osteoporosis in patients with pelvic and acetabular fractures and to quantify the potential clinical impact in a geriatric trauma population. Design Retrospective cohort study. Setting Level 1 trauma center. Patients A total of 335 patients older than 60 years of age who presented to a Level 1 trauma center with a diagnosis of pelvic or acetabular fracture and were evaluated with a CT scan between the years 2010 and 2016. A subset of 255 patients were evaluated with a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scan within 6 months of the CT scan. Intervention Measurement of Hounsfield units (HU) was performed at the midpoint of the femoral neck using a standardized, ovoid section, followed by Livewire measurement. Application of this technique retrospectively to a population of geriatric patients with pelvic or acetabular fractures. Main outcome measurements (1) HUs were measured in a cross section at the midpoint of the femoral neck and, discriminant function analysis was used to establish thresholds for normal bone mineral density, osteopenia, and osteoporosis. (2) Change in the number of diagnoses of osteoporosis after application of the protocol the geriatric trauma cohort. Results Patients with osteopenia were identified correctly 67.5% of the time (14.3% were incorrectly grouped as normal, and 18.3% were grouped as having osteopenia). Patients with osteoporosis were identified correctly 88.9% of the time (the remaining 11.1% were assigned to osteopenic). The results of discriminant function analysis were used to establish CT thresholds for osteopenia (345 HUs) and osteoporosis (262 HUs). Conclusion CT imaging obtained for pelvic and acetabular fractures can identify patients with osteoporosis without additional radiation exposure or cost. The fitted ovoid region of interest is a standard feature in most CT scan platforms and is quite simple to perform. Level of evidence Diagnostic Level II.
