The bimodal Wichita igneous province (WIP) represents the only exposed Ediacaran to Cambrian anorogenic magmatic assemblage present along the buried southern margin of Laurentia and was emplaced during rifting in the Southern Oklahoma Aulacogen prior to Cambrian opening of the southern Iapetus Ocean. Here, we establish the first high-precision U-Pb zircon geochronological framework for the province. Weighted mean 206Pb/238U dates from mafic and felsic rocks in the Wichita Mountains indicate emplacement in a narrow time frame from 532.49 ± 0.12 Ma to 530.23 ± 0.14 Ma. Rhyolite lavas in the Arbuckle Mountains farther east yield weighted mean 206Pb/238U dates of 539.20 ± 0.15 Ma and 539.46 ± 0.13 Ma. These dates for the WIP indicate that magmatism in the Southern Oklahoma Aulacogen postdated the ca. 540 Ma rift-drift transition along the Appalachian margin to the east. Whole-rock trace-element and isotopic geochemistry, supplemented by trace elements in zircon, tracks the evolution of magma sources during WIP petrogenesis. These data indicate that initial melting and assimilation of subcontinental mantle lithosphere by an uprising mantle plume were followed by increasing involvement of asthenospheric melts with time. We suggest that upwelling of this plume in the area of the Southern Oklahoma Aulacogen triggered an inboard jump of the spreading center active along the eastern margin of Laurentia, which led to separation of the Precordillera terrane (now located in Argentina) from the Ouachita embayment present in the southern Laurentian margin.

The average contents F = 788 ppm and Cl < 45 ppm of the clay fraction from Amazon River mouth sediments represent the composition of a large portion of weathered South American continental crust prior to any contact with high salinity formation waters. The data show a large fractionation between F and Cl with the latter being strongly leached during weathering along with Na and Ca. The one-order-of-magnitude fractionation is com- parable to Cl fractionation from degassing during early Earth accretion. In contrast, F is strongly retained in the hydroxyl sites of neoformed clay minerals, mainly illite, as well as in detrital apatite and muscovite. The high average ratio F/Cl > 10 of the clay fraction from Amazon River sediments are comparable only to Cl-poor MORB and evolved granite and rhyolite. The high content Cl = 180 ppm and low F/Cl = 3 of average shale is due to interaction of the sediments with high salinity diagenetic fluids. The Seridó schist belt is used to assess the behavior of F and Cl during shale metamorphism and anatexis. Its ratio F/Cl > 10 ppm is high compared to average shale and is related to the strong partitioning of Cl into metamorphic fluids. The obtained data suggest that the Cl partitioned into shales during diageneses is released back into fluids produced during metamorphic conditions. The experimental data indicate that anatexis of mica schist significantly fractionates F/Cl ratios producing schist residue with F/Cl > 38 and peraluminous melts with F/Cl = 6.

Studies of living foraminiferal assemblages provide much information about their roles in present environments and a perspective on interpreting the past. Along modern coasts, benthic Foraminifera act as ecological indicators in their responses to different natural and anthropogenic conditions, such as food availability, oxygen concentrations, salinity, and trace metal concentrations. A detailed survey of foraminiferal populations was undertaken in the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve, Texas, close to the time of its establishment in 2006. The purpose was to gauge the overall status of populations and provide baseline data for future comparison. The arid south Texas Gulf Coast is a variable and often harsh environment where biota are subject to multiple anthropogenic stressors. Despite these rigors, living Foraminifera were prolific in the Reserve. This paper discusses the results from Mesquite (July 2008), Copano (May 2006), and Mission Bays (June 2006). Populations were robust in each bay, with Ammonia parkinsoniana, Ammotium salsum, and Elphidium excavatum being most abundant. Highest numbers corresponded mainly to areas of greater circulation. In Mission Bay, elemental analysis of shells, prompted by the presence of sulfur grains in sediments and by yellow tests, detected elevated levels of barium, strontium, and iron. Most sediment samples were black and sulfidic, and ubiquitous framboidal pyrite in sediment and shells suggests that forams were frequently subject to low-oxygen conditions. Abundant living numbers, tolerance of low-oxygen conditions, and the ability to cycle trace metals emphasize the resilience of Foraminifera in taxing environments and their integral position as lower trophic level members.

We modeled non-steady-state, fluid-assisted diffusion in a sheet plane, infinite cylinder and finite thin cylinder using analytical solutions of the diffusion equation and the experimental diffusivity of F-in-biotite. Diffusion experiments on natural biotite in the presence of hydrofluoric acid at 0.4 GPa and 650, 700, and 750 °C produced diffusive influx perpendicular to the c-axis. EPMA mapping and profiling allow us to define the following Arrhenius expression of F diffusion in biotite: D = 7.04 m 2 s × 10 − 4 × exp − 221 kJ mol RT − 1 The results yield the discrimination of a high-T homogenization domain where cooling paths continuously reequilibrate F-in-biotite, an intermediate-T zonation domain where cooling paths record F-in-biotite diffusion profiles and a low-T closure domain where F-in-biotite remains unchanged. The zonation domain significantly expands with increasing cooling rates and decreasing diffusion time. We systematically analyzed F-in-biotite with electron microprobe in samples collected along representative cross-sections within the Serido Belt, northeastern Brazil. Its metasedimentary units reached upper amphibolite grade metamorphic conditions, with constant F-in-biotite (F ≈ 0.33 wt.%) in grains from mica schist and paragneiss. The Ti-in-biotite geothermometer yielded nearly constant temperatures around 623 °C. The F-in-biotite regional background values remain unchanged at the contact with the major Ediacaran F-rich Acari pluton. It indicates the absence of magmatic fluid influx into the host rocks and is evidence for a fluid-absent nature of melts. By contrast, the F-in-biotite of the metric mica schist enclaves within dykes and sills of Cambrian pegmatitic granites was reequilibrated by interaction with exsolved fluids. The Ti-in-biotite geothermometer indicates temperatures around 642 °C, and our model suggests 100 kyr as a minimal duration for fluid-rock interaction. The preservation of intra-grain F-in-biotite homogeneity requires fluid flux cessation before cooling or fluid-present cooling rates below 100 °C Myr−1. Higher cooling rates would generate F-in-biotite intra-grain zonation. At the contact with the pegmatitic granites, the metasedimentary rocks show meter-scale F-in-biotite gradients due to thermal profiles setting the fluid (fH2O/fHF) gradient. The preservation of such gradients is related to a relatively fast fluid flux episode compared to the overall duration of the elevated thermal profile. The absence of intra-grain zonation indicates that F-in-biotite re-equilibration was fast relative to that of the fluid flux duration. We found intra-grain F-in-biotite zonation within an orthogneiss sample from the Paleoproterozoic Caico complex basement nearby the metasedimentary belt and intruded plutons. The fit of the natural profile by modeled profiles for cooling rates below 10 °C Myr−1, obtained from available Serido Belt U-Pb and 40Ar/39Ar ages, indicates that the orthogneiss cooled from 475 °C. It suggests the existence of a thermal gradient as the inner part of the belt cooled from 623 °C.

Aortic coarctation is a common congenital abnormality causing significant morbidity and mortality if not corrected. Re-coarctation or restenosis of the aorta following treatment is a relatively common long-term problem and the optimal therapy has not been elucidated. In this review, we identify the challenges associated with and the optimal management for recurrent aortic coarctation and the most appropriate therapy for different patient cohorts. Open surgery provides a durable long-term aortic repair, however, given the complex nature of the procedure, has a somewhat higher rate of serious complications. Endovascular repair, although less invasive and relatively safe, has limitations in treated complex anatomy and is more likely to require repeat intervention. Open surgical repair is more appropriate for infants that have not been intervened on and endovascular therapy should be reserved for older children and adults and those that require repeat intervention.

Intravenous leiomyomatosis with intracardiac extension is a rare condition characterized by extensive growth of a benign uterine mass that extends into the venous system through uterine channels and then into the cardiac chambers. A variety of presentations exist; cure relies on complete surgical resection. Extensive abdominal dissection, cardiopulmonary bypass (with or without circulatory arrest), and removal of the intracaval component are required. However, because of the rarity and variety of presentation, exact preferred management has not been well defined. A specific case, followed by a comprehensive literature review, helps delineate the specific decision making necessary for mass removal.

The montmorillonite-catalyzed reactions of D, L-ImpA with D, L-ImpU generates RNA-like oligomers. The structures of the dimers to pentamers were investigated and homochiral products were identified in greater amounts than would be expected if theoretical amounts of each were formed. The homochirality increased from 64% to 97% as the chain length increased from dimers to pentamers. Investigation of the effect of pH, occupancy of the interlayer space and the influence of various cations in the reaction provided further insight into physical process in the mechanism of the catalysis. A detailed analysis of dimers was carried out in view of there being key intermediates towards formation of higher oligomers. The study was extended to the synthesis of non-standard dimers including those formed with deoxy-ribonucleotides.

Montmorillonite catalyzes the oligomerization of activated nucleotides to form RNA. However, the mechanism of the montmorillonite catalysis, used as a model for similar prebiotic chemistry, is still not well understood. We have observed that the extent of catalysis depends not only upon the magnitude of the negative charge on the montmorillonite lattice and the number of cations associated with it, but also on the pH at which the reaction is promoted. The isotherm and catalysis studies have been extended to provide binding information and catalytic outcomes over a wide pH range. The optimal binding occurs in the region of maximal oligomer formation. X-ray diffraction studies revealed changes in layer separations of montmorillonite as reaction occurs. The application of the Scherrer equation to the X-ray diffraction data showed differences in domain size. Modeling of the size of the activated nucleotide monomers and the charge on the montmorillonite surface provided an interpretation of how these factors influence adsorption. This research provides a basis for further understanding of the physical processes in the mechanism of this catalysis.

Silica glass treated at high pressures and temperatures (1–3 GPa, 1100–1250 °C) in a solid-media pressure apparatus incorporated observable quantities of hydroxyl and hydride. The FTIR absorbance signals for these species appeared only when the glass sample was pressurized in the presence of water together with graphite at a high temperature, and the hydroxyl signal disappeared completely when the glass was heat-treated at 1000 °C in air for 1 h. These results indicate that hydrogen diffused into and reacted with the silica glass during the high pressure–temperature treatment. Reduction of H2O by graphite at high pressure/temperature conditions is the probable source of hydrogen.

U-Pb laser ablation–multicollector–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) ages have been determined from large zircon crystals separated from pegmatites of the Adirondack Mountains, New York. Emplacement and metamorphic ages ranging from 949 ± 10 to 1222 ± 12 Ma help constrain the timing of igneous, metamorphic, and deformational history of the region, and are associated with Shawinigan, Ottawan, and Rigolet orogenesis. Geologically reasonable ages were obtained from most zircon separates despite large size, a limited number of grains, high uranium and thorium contents, dark and opaque interiors, high density of fractures, and widespread areas of metamictization and Pb loss. However, few grains show zoning or differences in composition when viewed with the backscattered mode on the scanning electron microscope. Large, clear, internally featureless, U-poor grains yield the best constrained ages. U-Th-Pb monazite ages, determined by electron probe, vary from 874 ± 27 Ma to 297 ± 62; the younger age may reflect the timing of hydrothermal fluid infiltration related to late Acadian events. This study suggests that, with appropriate care, zircons from pegmatites are a reasonable target for LA-MC-ICP-MS geochronology, widening the current arsenal of sampling targets.

Porous synthetic quartzites and amphibolites, each with faceted pore walls, were synthesized and evaluated to examine the permeability of pore networks similar to those of the lower crust and mantle. Quartzite with a fluid in equilibrium with an Mg–clinopyroxene contained connected networks of pores with a dihedral angle of 30° bounded by walls that were 10–50% faceted. The relationship of their permeability (k) to porosity (φ) is approximated by the previously determined relationship for relatively nonfaceted synthetic quartzite Amphibolite with an HF fluid contained fluorotremolite and a connected network of pores bounded by walls exhibiting 78–90% faceting. These materials showed much lower k for a given φ, with an apparent permeability threshold at φc = 0.04. A curve fit to these data yields The results suggest that moderate faceting has little effect on the transmission of fluids through rocks, but extensive faceting significantly alters permeability. This difference is most likely produced through isolation of the fluid to the grain corners at low φ with extensive faceting. Rocks with pores that tend toward faceting may impede the flow of fluids and melt.

The pore geometry of texturally equilibrated rocks is controlled by the interfacial energy ratio between grain boundaries and solid–liquid boundaries. Faceting at pore walls, which is a common feature of pore networks in rocks, strongly affects the liquid distribution. We investigated the effects of faceting on the equilibrium pore geometries based on image analysis of several systems with various degrees of faceting and dihedral angles. The degree of faceting was assessed by the F value, which is the ratio of the flat interface length at the pore wall to the length of total interfacial boundary between solid and liquid. The F values tend to increase with increasing liquid volume fraction. Little-faceted systems show relatively homogeneous liquid distribution. Moderately-faceted systems with a higher dihedral angle (∼55°) are characterized by development of large pores surrounded by faceted walls and complementary shrinkage of triple junction tubes, whereas strongly faceted systems with a low dihedral angle show no evidence of shrinking triple junction tubes, although most pores are surrounded by faceted pore walls. The faceted systems tend to produce more facet boundaries at the pore walls due to the difference of interfacial energies between the flat and curved surfaces. In the systems with the same degree of faceting, heterogeneity of liquid distribution tends to decrease with dihedral angle. For faceting systems, the permeability of texturally equilibrated rocks with low liquid fraction would be significantly decreased by the relative reduction of triple junction volumes or by closure of channels along grain edge due to the truncation of facet walls.
