International audience; This paper analyzes the compaction behavior of assemblies composed of soft (elastic) spherical particles beyond the jammed state, using three-dimensional non-smooth contact dynamic simulations. The assemblies of particles are characterized using the evolution of the packing fraction, the coordination number, and the von Misses stress distribution within the particles as the confining stress increases. The packing fraction increases and tends toward a maximum value close to 1, and the mean coordination number increases as a square root of the packing fraction. As the confining stress increases, a transition is observed from a granular-like material with exponential tails of the shear stress distributions to a continuous-like material characterized by Gaussian-like distributions of the shear stresses. We develop an equation that describes the evolution of the packing fraction as a function of the applied pressure. This equation, based on the micromechanical expression of the granular stress tensor, the limit of the Hertz contact law for small deformation, and the power-law relation between the packing fraction and the coordination of the particles, provides good predictions from the jamming point up to very high densities without the need for tuning any parameters.

International audience; The aim of this work was the development of injectable radio-opaque and macroporous calcium phosphate cement (CPC) to be used as a bone substitute for the treatment of pathologic vertebral fractures. A CPC was first rendered radio-opaque by the incorporation of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2). In order to create macroporosity, poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) microspheres around 100 μm were homogeneously incorporated into the CPC as observed by scanning electron microscopy. Physicochemical analyses by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the brushite phase of the cement. The mechanical properties of the CPC/PLGA cement containing 30% PLGA (wt/wt) were characterized by a compressive strength of 2 MPa and a Young’s modulus of 1 GPa. The CPC/PLGA exhibited initial and final setting times of 7 and 12 min, respectively. Although the incorporation of PLGA microspheres increased the force necessary to inject the cement and decreased the percentage of injected mass as a function of time, the CPC/PLGA appeared fully injectable at 4 min. Moreover, in comparison with CPC, CPC/PLGA showed a full degradation in 6 weeks (with 100% mass loss), and this was associated with an acidification of the medium containing the CPC/PLGA sample (pH of 3.5 after 6 weeks). A cell viability test validated CPC/PLGA biocompatibility, and in vivo analyses using a bone defect assay in the caudal vertebrae of Wistar rats showed the good opacity of the CPC through the tail and a significant increased degradation of the CPC/PLGA cement a month after implantation. In conclusion, this injectable CPC scaffold appears to be an interesting material for bone substitution.

Granular systems are not always homogeneous and can be composed of grains with very different mechanical properties. To improve our understanding of the behavior of real granular systems, in this experimental study, we compress 2D bidisperse systems made of both soft and rigid grains. By means of a recently developed experimental set-up, \md{from the measurement of the displacement field we can} follow all the mechanical observables of this granular medium from the inside of each particle up-to-the whole system scale. We \md{are able to} detect the jamming transition from these observables and study their evolution deep in the jammed state for packing fractions as high as $0.915$. We show the uniqueness of the behavior of such a system, \md{in which way} it is similar to purely soft or rigid systems and how it is different from them. International audience; Deformation fields at the surface of diametrically squeezed shallow cylinders in the large deformation regime are measured experimentally and numerically for different material behaviour in the large deformation regime. By means of a digital image correlation method optimized for large displacements, strain fields are measured and compared with finite element simulations. Assuming a neo-Hookean behaviour for cylinders made of rubber silicone, the strain field is found to be in quantitative agreement with non-linear finite element simulations up to the highest deformations reached in our experiments (15%). For materials that follow an elastoplastic constitutive law, agreement is lost after few percents of deformation and location of the strain field differences are identified up to strains as high as 30%. Strain field evolution is also measured for solid foam cylinders up to 60% of global deformation strain. This method that can be applied to a broad variety of materials, even in the occurrence of large deformations, provides a way to study quantitatively local features of the mechanical contact.

We examine the effect of small, spatially localized, excitations applied periodically in different manners, on the crackling dynamics of a brittle crack driven slowly in a heterogeneous solid. When properly adjusted, these excitations are observed to radically modify avalanche statistics and considerably limit the magnitude of the largest events. Surprisingly, this does not require information on the front loading state at the time of excitation; applying it either at a random location or at the most loaded point gives the same results. Subsequently, we unravel how the excitation amplitude, spatial extent and frequency govern the effect. We find that the excitation efficiency is ruled by a single reduced parameter, namely the injected power per unit front length; the suppression of extreme avalanches is maximum at a well-defined optimal value of this control parameter. This analysis opens a new way to control largest events in crackling dynamics. Beyond fracture problems, it may be relevant for crackling systems described by models of the same universality class, such as the wetting of heterogeneous substrates or magnetic walls in amorphous magnets., 4 figures

Au Bénin, les déchets issus de la transformation du bois sont très insuffisamment valorisés dans une perspective de réutilisation par l’industrie du bois. Les technologies de transformation de ces produits connexes, économiquement accessibles aux populations des pays en développement, constituent un domaine très peu abordé dans la littérature internationale. Dans le présent travail, un matériau constitué d’un mélange de sciure de bois de teck et de pâte de polystyrène recyclés, suivant une technologie simple à mettre en œuvre et de type low-tech, a été caractérisé. Les résultats obtenus ont montré que les propriétés du composite varient significativement avec la granulométrie de la sciure utilisée. La masse volumique apparente du matériau est comprise entre 686 à 826 kg/m3, son taux d’absorption d’eau est inférieur à 15 % et son taux de gonflement en épaisseur est inférieur à 5 % après 24 heures d’immersion. Une corrélation élevée a été observée entre ses propriétés physiques et sa porosité qui varie de 34 et 43 % suivant la granulométrie des sciures de bois utilisées. Le composite présente un module d’élasticité en traction compris entre 582 à 1 057 MPa, une résistance en traction comprise entre 2 et 3 MPa et un coefficient de Poisson variant de 0,14 à 0,24. En compression, son module d’élasticité varie entre 270 à 470 MPa et sa résistance entre 6 à 9 MPa. Une mise en œuvre du composite ainsi élaboré peut être envisagée en substitution du bois pour des éléments faiblement chargés comme des pièces de coffrage de construction légère.

International audience; Synthetic polymers are widely employed for bone tissue engineering due to their tunable physical properties and biocompatibility. Inherently, most of these polymers display poor antimicrobial properties. Infection at the site of implantation is a major cause for failure or delay in bone healing process and the development of anti-microbial polymers is highly desired. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNps) were synthesized in poly-caprolactone (PCL) solution by in-situ reduction and further extruded into PCL/AgNps filaments. Customized 3D structures were fabricated using the PCL/AgNps filaments through 3D printing technique. As demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy, the 3D printed scaffolds exhibited interconnected porous structures. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed the reduction of silver ions. Transmission electron micro-scopy along with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of silver nanoparticles throughout the PCL matrix. In vitro enzymatic degradation studies showed that the PCL/AgNps scaffolds dis-played 80% degradation in 20 days. The scaffolds were cytocompatible, as assessed using hFOB cells and their antibacterial activity was demonstrated on Escherichia coli. Due to their interconnected porous structure, me-chanical and antibacterial properties, these cytocompatible multifunctional 3D printed PCL/AgNps scaffolds appear highly suitable for bone tissue engineering.

We use bi-dimensional non-smooth contact dynamics simulations to analyze the isotropic compaction of mixtures composed of rigid and deformable incompressible particles. Deformable particles are modeled using the finite-element method and following a hyper-elastic neo-Hookean constitutive law. The evolution of the packing fraction, bulk modulus and particle connectivity, beyond the jamming point, are characterized as a function of the applied stresses for different proportion of rigid/soft particles and two values of friction coefficient. Based on the granular stress tensor, a micro-mechanical expression for the evolution of the packing fraction and the bulk modulus are proposed. This expression is based on the evolution of the particle connectivity together with the bulk behaviour of a single representative deformable particle. A constitutive compaction equation is then introduced, set by well-defined physical quantities, given a direct prediction of the maximum packing fractionφmaxas a function of the proportion of rigid/soft particles.

Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) is an attractive technology for chemical conversion of energy. Replacement of platinum with inexpensive and stable electrocatalysts remains a major bottleneck hampering large-scale hydrogen production by using clean and renewable energy sources. Here, we report electrocatalytically active and ultra-stable Polymer-Derived Ceramics towards HER. We successfully prepared ultrathin silicon and carbon (Si–C) based ceramic systems supported on electrically conducting 2D reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets with promising HER activity by varying the nature and the composition of the ceramic with the inclusion of nitrogen, boron and oxygen. Our results suggest that oxygen-enriched Si-B-C-N/rGO composites (O-SiBCN/rGO) display the strongest catalytic activity leading to an onset potential and a Tafel slope of − 340 mV and ~ 120 mV dec−1 respectively. O-SiBCN/rGO electrodes display stability over 170 h with minimal increase of 14% of the overpotential compared to ~ 1700% for commercial platinum nanoparticles. Our study provides new insights on the performance of ceramics as affordable and robust HER catalysts calling for further exploration of the electrocatalytic activity of such unconventional materials.

We analyze the isotropic compaction of assemblies composed of soft pentagons interacting through classical Coulomb friction via numerical simulations. The effect of the initial particle shape is discussed by comparing packings of pentagons with packings of soft circular particles. We characterize the evolution of the packing fraction, the elastic modulus, and the microstructure (particle rearrangement, connectivity, contact force, and particle stress distributions) as a function of the applied stresses. Both systems behave similarly: the packing fraction increases and tends asymptotically to a maximum value ${\ensuremath{\phi}}_{\mathrm{max}}$, where the bulk modulus diverges. At the microscopic scale we show that particle rearrangements occur even beyond the jammed state, the mean coordination increases as a square root of the packing fraction, and the force and stress distributions become more homogeneous as the packing fraction increases. Soft pentagons experience larger particle rearrangements than circular particles, and such behavior decreases proportionally to the friction. Interestingly, the friction between particles also contributes to a better homogenization of the contact force network in both systems. From the expression of the granular stress tensor we develop a model that describes the compaction behavior as a function of the applied pressure, the Young modulus, and the initial shape of the particles. This model, settled on the joint evolution of the particle connectivity and the contact stress, provides outstanding predictions from the jamming point up to very high densities.

We analyze the isotropic compaction of mixtures composed of rigid and deformable incompressible particles by the non-smooth contact dynamics approach (NSCD). The deformable bodies are simulated using a hyper-elastic neo-Hookean constitutive law by means of classical finite elements. For mixtures that varied from totally rigid to totally deformable particles, we characterize the evolution of the packing fraction, the elastic modulus, and the connectivity as a function of the applied stresses when varying inter-particle coefficient of friction. We show first that the packing fraction increases and tends asymptotically to a maximum value $\phi_{max}$, which depends on both the mixture ratio and the inter-particle friction. The bulk modulus is also shown to increase with the packing fraction and to diverges as it approaches $\phi_{max}$. From the micro-mechanical expression of the granular stress tensor, we develop a model to describe the compaction behavior as a function of the applied pressure, the Young modulus of the deformable particles, and the mixture ratio. A bulk equation is also derived from the compaction equation. This model lays on the characterization of a single deformable particle under compression together with a power-law relation between connectivity and packing fraction. This compaction model, set by well-defined physical quantities, results in outstanding predictions from the jamming point up to very high densities and allows us to give a direct prediction of $\phi_{max}$ as a function of both the mixture ratio and the friction coefficient.

International audience; The aim of this work was to develop a bioresorbable, biodegradable and biocompatible synthetic polymer with good mechanical properties for bone tissue engineering applications. Polylactic acid (PLA) scaffolds were generated by 3D printing using the fused deposition modelling method, and reinforced by incorporation of graphene oxide (GO). Morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy indicated that the scaffold average pore size was between 400 and 500 μm. Topography imaging revealed a rougher surface upon GO incorporation (Sa = 5.8 μm for PLA scaffolds, and of 9.9 μm for PLA scaffolds with 0.2% GO), and contact angle measurements showed a transition from a hydrophobic surface (pure PLA scaffolds) to a hydrophilic surface after GO incorporation. PLA thermomechanical properties were enhanced by GO incorporation, as shown by the 70 °C increase of the degradation peak (thermal gravimetric analysis). However, GO incorporation did not change significantly the melting point assessed by differential scanning calorimetry. Physicochemical analyses by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the filler presence. Tensile testing demonstrated that the mechanical properties were improved upon GO incorporation (30% increase of the Young's modulus with 0.3% GO). Cell viability, attachment, proliferation and differentiation assays using MG-63 osteosarcoma cells showed that PLA/GO scaffolds were biocompatible and that they promoted cell proliferation and mineralization more efficiently than pure PLA scaffolds. In conclusion, this new 3D printed nanocomposite is a promising scaffold with adequate mechanical properties and cytocompatibility which may allow bone formation.

International audience; Here, we produced a synthetic polymer having adequate biocompatibility, biodegradability, and bioresorbability, as well as mechanical properties for applications in bone tissue engineering. We used the fused deposition modeling (FDM) based 3D printing approach in order to produce biomimetic biodegradable scaffolds made of polylactic acid (PLA). We strengthened these scaffolds by addition of exfoliated boron nitride (EBN) as filler. We demonstrated the presence of EBN by physicochemical analysis using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), we found that EBN incorporation did not influence the transition temperature, but reduced the polymer crystallinity. Scanning electron microscopy for morphology evaluation showed a mean scaffold pore size of 500 μm. EBN incorporation did not affect the scaffold mechanical properties (tensile test), but modified the surface roughness. Moreover, contact angle quantification indicated that the surface of PLA/EBN scaffolds was hydrophilic and that of PLA scaffolds hydrophobic. Finally, the results of the cytotoxicity, cell attachment, and proliferation experiments using MG-63 and MC3T3 cells indicated that PLA scaffolds filled with EBN were nontoxic and compatible with osteoblastic cells and also promoted the scaffold mineralization by MG-63 cells. Altogether, our results suggest that this 3D printed nanocomposite scaffold is suitable for tissue engineering.

We describe here experiments on the mechanics of hydrogel particle packings from the Behringer lab, performed between 2012 and 2015. These experiments quantify the evolution of all contact forces inside soft particle packings exposed to compression, shear, and the intrusion of a large intruder. Granular packings of non-convex or elongated particles can form free-standing structures like walls or arches. For some particle shapes, such as staples, the rigidity arises from interlocking of pairs of particles, but the origins of rigidity for non-interlocking particles remains unclear. We report on experiments and numerical simulations of sheared columns of "hexapods," particles consisting of three mutually orthogonal sphero-cylinders whose centers coincide. We vary the length-to-diameter aspect ratio, $\alpha$, of the sphero-cylinders and subject the packings to quasistatic direct shear. For small $\alpha$, we observe a finite yield stress. For large $\alpha$, however, the column becomes rigid when sheared, supporting stresses that increase sharply with increasing strain. Analysis of X-ray micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) data collected during the shear reveals that the stiffening is associated with a tilted, oblate cluster of hexapods near the nominal shear plane in which particle deformation and average contact number both increase. Simulation results show that the particles are collectively under tension along one direction even though they do not interlock pairwise. These tensions comes from contact forces carrying large torques, and they are perpendicular to the compressive stresses in the packing. Shearing granular materials induces non-affine displacements. Such non-affine displacements have been studied extensively, and are known to correlate with plasticity and other mechanical features of amorphous packings. A well known example is shear transformation zones as captured by the local deviation from affine deformation, $D^2_{min}$, and their relevance to failure and stress fluctuations. We analyze sheared frictional athermal disk packings and show that there exists at least one additional mesoscopic transport mechanism that superimposes itself on top of local diffusive motion. We evidence this second transport mechanism in a homogeneous system via a diffusion tensor analysis and show that the trace of the diffusion tensor equals the classic $D^2_{min}$ when this second mesoscopic transport is corrected for. The new transport mechanism is consistently observed over a wide range of volume fractions and even for particles with different friction coefficients and is consistently observed also upon shear reversal, hinting at its relevance for memory effects., 6 pages, 4 figures + supplemental materials

Granular systems of disks (2D) and spheres (3D) under shear have been studied extensively. However, less attention has been paid to systems of non-spherical particles, i.e., ellipses, polygons, etc. Here we studied a quasi 2D granular system composed of ellipses under homogeneous simple shear. By tracking the positions and orientations of the ellipses, we have observed that they gradually rotate to align along a preferred direction as the shear strain increases. This preferred direction asymptotically approach a density-independent value at large strain. While first reported for disk systems, shear jamming is also observed for our ellipse system, as indicated by the increase of system pressure and coordination number with shear strain.

We investigate the jamming transition in a quasi-2D granular material composed of regular pentagons or disks subjected to quasistatic uniaxial compression. We report six major findings based on experiments with monodisperse photoelastic particles with static friction coefficient $$\mu \approx 1$$. (1) For both pentagons and disks, the onset of rigidity occurs when the average coordination number of non-rattlers, $$Z_{nr}$$, reaches 3, and the dependence of $$Z_{nr}$$ on the packing fraction $$\phi$$ changes again when $$Z_{nr}$$ reaches 4. (2) Though the packing fractions $$\phi _{c1}$$ and $$\phi _{c2}$$ at these transitions differ from run to run, for both shapes the data from all runs with different initial configurations collapses when plotted as a function of the non-rattler fraction. (3) The averaged values of $$\phi _{c1}$$ and $$\phi _{c2}$$ for pentagons are around $$1\%$$ smaller than those for disks. (4) Both jammed pentagons and disks show Gamma distribution of the Voronoi cell area with same parameters. (5) The jammed pentagons have similar translational order for particle centers but slightly less orientational order for contacting pairs compared to jammed disks. (6) For jammed pentagons, the angle between edges at a face-to-vertex contact point shows a uniform distribution and the size of a cluster connected by face-to-face contacts shows a power-law distribution.

A photoelastic material will reveal its internal stresses when observed through polarizing filters. This eye-catching property has enlightened our understanding of granular materials for over half a century, whether in the service of art, education, or scientific research. In this review article in honor of Robert Behringer, we highlight both his pioneering use of the method in physics research, and its reach into the public sphere through museum exhibits and outreach programs. We aim to provide clear protocols for artists, exhibit-designers, educators, and scientists to use in their own endeavors. It is our hope that this will build awareness about the ubiquitous presence of granular matter in our lives, enlighten its puzzling behavior, and promote conversations about its importance in environmental and industrial contexts. To aid in this endeavor, this paper also serves as a front door to a detailed wiki containing open, community-curated guidance on putting these methods into practice., Comment: 13 pages

We study the jamming phase diagram of sheared granular material using a novel Couette shear set-up with multi-ring bottom. The set-up uses small basal friction forces to apply a volume-conserving linear shear with no shear band to a granular system composed of frictional photoelastic discs. The set-up can generate arbitrarily large shear strain due to its circular geometry, and the shear direction can be reversed, allowing us to measure a feature that distinguishes shear-jammed from fragile states. We report systematic measurements of the stress, strain and contact network structure at phase boundaries that have been difficult to access by traditional experimental techniques, including the yield stress curve and the jamming curve close to $\phi_{SJ}\approx 0.74$, the smallest packing fraction supporting a shear-jammed state. We observe fragile states created under large shear strain over a range of $\phi < \phi_{SJ}$. We also find a transition in the character of the quasi-static steady flow centered around $\phi_{SJ}$ on the yield curve as a function of packing fraction. Near $\phi_{SJ}$, the average contact number, fabric anisotropy, and non-rattler fraction all show a change of slope. Above $\phi_{F}\approx 0.7$ the steady flow shows measurable deviations from the basal linear shear profile, and above $\phi_c\approx 0.78$ the flow is localized in a shear band.

Very often damage and fracture in heterogeneous materials exhibit bursty dynamics made of successive impulse-like events which form characteristic aftershock sequences obeying specific scaling laws initially derived in seismology: Gutenberg-Richter law, productivity law, B\r{a}th's law and Omori-Utsu law. We show here how these laws naturally arise in the model of the long-range elastic depinning interface used as a paradigm to model crack propagation in heterogeneous media. We unravel the specific conditions required to observe this seismic-like organization in the crack propagation problem. Beyond failure problems, the results extend to a variety of situations described by models of the same universality class: contact line motion in the wetting problem or domain wall motion in dirty ferromagnet, to name a few., Comment: 12 pages

International audience; We study the local and global dynamics of sheared granular materials in a stick-slip experiment, using a slider and a spring. The system crackles, with intermittent slip avalanches, or exhibits irregular or periodic dynamics, depending on the shear rate and loading stiffness. The global force on the slider during shearing captures the transitions from the crackling to the periodic regime. We deduce a dynamic phase diagram as a function of the shear rate and the loading stiffness and associated scaling laws. Using photoelastic particles, we also capture the grain-scale stress evolution, and investigate the microscopic behavior in the different regimes.

We present the experimental studies of highly strained soft bidisperse granular systems made of hyperelastic and plastic particles. We explore the behavior of granular matter deep in the jammed state from local field measurement from the grain scale to the global scale. By mean of digital image correlation and accurate image recording we measure for each compression step the evolution of the particle geometries and their right Cauchy-Green strain tensor fields. We analyze the evolution of the usual macroscopic observables (stress, packing fraction, coordination, fraction of non-rattlers, \textit{etc}.) along the compression process through the jamming point and far beyond. We also analyze the evolution of the local strain statistics and evidence a crossover in the material behavior deep in the jammed state. We show that this crossover depends on the particle material. We argue that the strain field is a reliable observable to describe the evolution of a granular system through the jamming transition and deep in the dense packing state whatever is the material behavior., Comment: 10 figures

This work was partially supported by Labex NUMEV (ANR-10-LABX-20); International audience; Using the contact dymanics method together with the finite element method, we simulate the uniaxial compression of assemblies of elastic cylinders. The numerical model accounts for finite deformations of the particles through the neo-Hookean constitutive equation and solid friction between the particles. A quantitative comparison with experiments carried out with centimetric rubberlike cylinders, with local deformations of the particles determined by image correlation, is proposed. We show that the simulations accurately capture the details of both the microstructure and the macroscopic behavior of the real granular system, demonstrating the relevancy of the numerical approach.

Crack growth is the basic mechanism leading to the failure of brittle materials. Engineering addresses this problem within the framework of continuum mechanics, which links deterministically the crack motion to the applied loading. Such an idealization, however, fails in several situations and in particular cannot capture the highly erratic (earthquake-like) dynamics sometimes observed in slowly fracturing heterogeneous solids. Here, we examine this problem by means of innovative experiments of crack growth in artificial rocks of controlled microstructure. The dynamical events are analyzed at both global and local scales, from the time fluctuation of the spatially-averaged crack speed and the induced acoustic emission, respectively. Their statistics are characterized and compared with the predictions of a recent approach mapping fracture onset with the depinning of an elastic interface. Finally, the overall time-size organization of the events are characterized to shed light on the mechanisms underlying the scaling laws observed in seismology., 18 pages

We show how a weak force, $f$, enables intruder motion through dense granular materials subject to external mechanical excitations, in the present case stepwise shearing. A force acts on a Teflon disc in a two dimensional system of photoelastic discs. This force is much smaller than the smallest force needed to move the disc without any external excitation. In a cycle, material + intruder are sheared quasi-statically from $\gamma = 0$ to $\gamma_{max}$, and then backwards to $\gamma = 0$. During various cycle phases, fragile and jammed states form. Net intruder motion, $\delta$, occurs during fragile periods generated by shear reversals. $\delta$ per cycle, e.g. the quasistatic rate $c$, is constant, linearly dependent on $\gamma_{max}$ and $f$. It vanishes as, $c \propto (\phi_c - \phi)^a$, with $a \simeq 3$ and $\phi_c \simeq \phi_J$, reflecting the stiffening of granular systems under shear as $\phi \rightarrow \phi_J$. The intruder motion induces large scale grain circulation. We present the experimental and numerical studies of a two-dimensional sheared amorphous material composed of bidisperse photoelastic disks. We analyze the statistics of avalanches during shear including the local and global fluctuations in energy and changes in particle positions and orientations. We find scale-free distributions for these global and local avalanches denoted by power laws whose cutoffs vary with interparticle friction and packing fraction. Different exponents are found for these power laws depending on the quantity from which variations are extracted. An asymmetry in time of the avalanche shapes is evidenced along with the fact that avalanches are mainly triggered by the shear bands. A simple relation independent of the intensity is found between the number of local avalanches and the global avalanches they form. We also compare these experimental and numerical results for both local and global fluctuations to predictions from mean-field and depinning theories.

International audience; Above a certain solid fraction, dense granular suspensions in water exhibit non-Newtonian behavior,including impact-activated solidification. Although it has been suggested that solidification depends onboundary interactions, quantitative experiments on the boundary forces have not been reported. Usinghigh-speed video, tracer particles, and photoelastic boundaries, we determine the impactor kinematics andthe magnitude and timings of impactor-driven events in the body and at the boundaries of cornstarchsuspensions. We observe mass shocks in the suspension during impact. The shock front dynamics arestrongly correlated to those of the intruder. However, the total momentum associated with this shock neverapproaches the initial impactor momentum. We also observe a faster second front associated with thepropagation of pressure to the boundaries of the suspension. The two fronts depend differently on the initialimpactor speed v0 and the suspension packing fraction. The speed of the pressure wave is at least an orderof magnitude smaller than (linear) ultrasound speeds obtained for much higher frequencies, pointing tocomplex amplitude and frequency response of cornstarch suspensions to compressive strains.

International audience; Columns made of convex noncohesive grains like sand collapse after being released from a confining container. However, structures built from non-convex grains can be stable without external support. In the current experiments, we investigate the effect of vibration on destroying such columns. The change of column height during vertical vibration, can be well characterized by stretched exponential relaxation when the column is short, which is in agreement with previous work, while a faster collapse happens when the column is tall. We investigate the collapse after the fast process including its dependence on column geometry, and on interparticle and basal friction.

The jamming behavior of a system composed of discs has been well documented. However, it remains unclear how a granular system consisting of non-spherical particles transitions between unjammed and jammed states. Here, we present compression experiments to study the jamming transition of 2D granular materials composed of photoelastic heptagonal particles and compare these results to data for discs and pentagons. We determine the critical packing fraction of heptagons and make a comparison to discs and pentagons. In the experiment, we subject 618 heptagonal particles to cyclic compression. We track the motion (inlcuding rotations) of the particles, and we measure forces on particles by photoelasticity. We observe a power law relationship between the average contact number (Z) and the pressure (P). Furthermore, we classify the type of contacts by the relative orientation of pairs of contacting particles (creating point-to-face and face-to-face contacts), and we explore the evolution of the contacts during jamming.

International audience; This paper concerns modeling of soft granular materials in which the grains are highly deformable. In order to simulate these materials, an approach based on an implicit formulation of the Material Point Method in the context of the finite strain theory, allowing for large deformations of grains, coupled with the Contact Dynamics method for the treatment of unilateral frictional contacts between grains, is proposed. In this context, the Mooney-Rivlin constitutive relationship is applied with two different set of elastic parameters. Considering these two material behaviors, a uniaxial compression of 2D soft granular packings is analyzed. The stress-strain relation and the evolution of the packing fraction as well as of the connectivity of the grains are discussed.

Above a certain density a granular material jams. This property can be controlled by either tuning a global property, such as the packing fraction or by applying shear strain, or at the micro-scale by tuning grain shape, inter-particle friction or externally controlled organization. Here, we introduce a novel way to change a local granular property by adding a weak anisotropic magnetic interaction between particles. We measure the evolution of the pressure, $P$, and coordination number, $Z$, for a packing of 2D photo-elastic disks, subject to uniaxial compression. Some of the particles have embedded cuboidal magnets. The strength of the magnetic interactions between particles are too weak to have a strong direct effect on $P$ or $Z$ when the system is jammed. However, the magnetic interactions play an important role in the evolution of latent force networks when systems containing a large enough fraction of the particles with magnets are driven through unjammed states. In this case, a statistically stable network of magnetic chains self-organizes and overlaps with force chains, strengthening the granular medium. We believe this property can be used to reversibly control mechanical properties of granular materials., 5 pages, 4 figures

We describe a series of experiments involving the creation of cylindrical packings of star-shaped particles, and an exploration of the stability of these packings. The stars cover a broad range of arm sizes and frictional properties. We carried out three different kinds of experiments, all of which involve columns that are prepared by raining star particles one-by-one into hollow cylinders. As an additional part of the protocol, we sometimes vibrated the column before removing the confining cylinder. We rate stability in terms of r, the ratio of the mass of particles that fall off a pile when it collapsed, to the total particle mass. The first experiment involved the intrinsic stability of the pile when the confining cylinder was removed. The second kind of experiment involved adding a uniform load to the top of the column, and then determining the collapse properties. A third experiment involved testing stability to tipping of the piles. We find a stability diagram relating the pile height, h, vs. pile diameter, delta, where the stable and unstable regimes are separated by a boundary that is roughly a power-law in h vs. delta with an exponent that is less than one. Increasing friction and vibration both tend to stabilize piles, while increasing particle size can destabilize the system under certain conditions., Comment: 9 Pages, 9 figures. International audience; Avalanches have been experimentally investigated in a wide range of physical systems from granular physics to friction. Here, we measure and detect avalanches in a 2D granular stick-slip experiment. We discuss the conventional way of signal processing for avalanche extraction and how statistics depend on several parameters that are chosen in the analysis process. Then, we introduce another way of detecting avalanches using wavelet transformations that can be applied in many other systems. We show that by using this method and measuring Lipschitz exponents, we can intelligently detect noise in a signal, which leads to a better avalanche extraction and more reliable avalanche statistics.

To unravel how the microstructure affects the fracture surface roughness in heterogeneous brittle solids like rocks or ceramics, we characterized the roughness statistics of post-mortem fracture surfaces in home-made materials of adjustable microstructure length-scale and porosity, obtained by sintering monodisperse polystyrene beads. Beyond the characteristic size of disorder, the roughness profiles are found to exhibit self-affine scaling features evolving with porosity. Starting from a null value and increasing the porosity, we quantitatively modify the self-affine scaling properties from anisotropic (at low porosity) to isotropic (for porosity larger than 10 %)., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, Physical Review E in Jan 2015, Vol. 91 Issue 1

International audience; We analyze the intermittent dynamics of cracks in heterogeneous brittle materials and the roughness of the resulting fracture surfaces by investigating theoretically and numerically crack propagation in an elastic solid of spatially-distributed toughness. The crack motion splits up into discrete jumps, avalanches, displaying scale-free statistical features characterized by universal exponents. Conversely, the ranges of scales are non-universal and the mean avalanche size and duration depend on the loading microstructure and specimen parameters according to scaling laws which are uncovered. The crack surfaces are found to be logarithmically rough. Their selection by the fracture parameters is formulated in term of scaling laws on the structure functions measured on one-dimensional roughness profiles taken parallel and perpendicular to the direction of crack growth.

We study how the loading rate, specimen geometry and microstructural texture select the dynamics of a crack moving through an heterogeneous elastic material in the quasi-static approximation. We find a transition, fully controlled by two dimensionless variables, between dynamics ruled by continuum fracture mechanics and crackling dynamics. Selection of the latter by the loading, microstructure and specimen parameters is formulated in terms of scaling laws on the power spectrum of crack velocity. This analysis defines the experimental conditions required to observe crackling in fracture. Beyond failure problems, the results extend to a variety of situations described by models of the same universality class, e.g. the dynamics in wetting or of domain walls in amorphous ferromagnets., 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted in Phys. The occurrence of various instabilities at very high speed is well known to occur in brittle fracture and significant advances have recently been obtained in the understanding of their origin. On the other hand, low speed brittle crack propagation under pure tension loading (mode I) is usually thought to yield smooth crack surfaces. The experimental investigation reported here questions this statement. Steady cracks were driven in brittle glassy polymers (PolyMethyl Methacrylate - PMMA) using a wedge-splitting geometry over a wide range of low velocities (10-9-10-1m/s). Three distinct patterns can be observed on the post-mortem fracture surfaces as crack velocity decreases: perfectly smooth at the highest speed, regularly fragmented at intermediate speed and macroscopically rough at the lowest speed.
