Lumpfish are broadly used as biological sea lice removers in Norwegian salmon farming and are mostly produced in hatcheries. To date, there is little systematic documentation on the mortality causes of lumpfish in hatcheries. In the current study, data from 12 selected fish groups from four hatcheries in Norway were collected to understand the challenges and opportunities related to the categorization of mortality causes of lumpfish in hatcheries. This study indicated that a high proportion of lumpfish mortality was categorized by the hatcheries as unspecified. When specified, mortality was primarily assessed as due to fin damage. Our analyses showed that mortality categorized as fin damage correlated with the detection of infectious agents in dead fish, suggesting that mortality was due to infections rather than fin damage. It was not possible to conclude whether infection with pathogens present in the environment caused fin damage or if injuries from aggression were a gateway for pathogens. Furthermore, due to the lack of information regarding production conditions, it was not possible to assess risk factors causing eventual aggression or the presence of pathogens. This study revealed that mortality causality—the chain of events leading to death—is mainly unclear in lumpfish hatcheries because (1) mortality categorization does not focus on underlying causes and (2) there is little documentation of production conditions, making it very difficult to relate mortality rates to external factors. The present findings highlight that there are gaps in the registrations made by hatcheries and that there is an urgent need to implement standardized monitoring protocols for lumpfish hatcheries. The aim of this study was to build on the work already conducted in optimising lumpfish broodstock temperature, photoperiod and nutrition by providing vital information on the stress relationship between mucosal barrier functions and the sexual development of lumpfish broodstock. From a population of approx. 300 fish of 1587 g (SEM ± 704 g), a sub-population of 20 fish was injected with 30 mg/kg fish cortisol implants on 5 January 2018. The control group was not treated with implants. The stress-induced cortisol implant group showed elevated plasma cortisol over a period of approximately one month. Analyses of mucus cell area and density suggested that induced stress could produce a positive functional response (stimulus) in lumpfish early in the experiment through a gentle increase in the barrier strength of the skin, reduced mucus cell size and increased density of mucous cells, resulting in a strengthening of the respiratory capacity of the gills. Mucous cell density and calculated barrier strength in the skin were significantly negatively correlated with plasma cortisol, while in the gill filaments of females, there was a significant negative correlation between mucous cell density and oestrogen levels. The reduced density of "empty" cells (Q cells) after stress induction indicates that these cells are important for the maintenance of homeostasis (physiological equilibrium). The fish in this experiment were considered more robust compared to previous analyses on smaller lumpfish.

Ballan wrasse ( Labrus bergylta ) are commonly used as cleaner fish in salmon farms as a biological treatment to mitigate sea lice infestation. Improved welfare for cleaner fish both during production of these fish and when in sea-cages with salmon is crucial for the industry's development. A common operational procedure in ballan wrasse production is transporting juveniles from one land-based farm to another for further on-growing. Episodes of increased mortality have been reported after such transportations. In this study, the relationship between transport stress and post-transport mortality at the on-growing facility was examined. It was also investigated if light sedation with AQUI-S ® can mitigate stress during transport. Stress was quantified by measuring cortisol release rate to the tank water during transport. This was investigated in 10 commercial live carrier truck transports (6 without AQUI-S ® sedation and 4 with sedation during loading and transport). The total time of transport varied between 12 and 21 h. In general, mortality was significantly higher (1.0 ± 0.6% day -1 ) the first five days post-transport compared to 15-20 days post transport (0.5% day -1 ). There was also a strong relationship between fish weight at transport and post-transport mortality, where higher mean weight at transport reduced mortality. In contrast to what was expected, AQUI-S ® treatment during transport procedures increased cortisol excretion rate, suggesting a stimulating effect of AQUI-S ® on the stress axis in ballan wrasse. Considering these results, the value of using AQUI-S ® to reduce stress during transport of juvenile ballan wrasse might be questioned. However, there was no relationship between cortisol release rate during transport and post-transport mortality.
