Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a relatively common chronic autoimmune disease. In the present study, we tried to correlate the histopathological criteria of WHO and modified WHO (mod.WHO) classification systems using two methods, namely, intraobserver and interobserver observations in these samples. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 64 microscopic slides with the diagnosis of the OLP lesions, based on both clinical and histopathological features. At first, each pathologist individually (as intraobserver) examined microscopic slides based on both histopathologic diagnostic criteria. Later, three pathologists in a group (as interobserver) reevaluated microscopic slides 2 months later in the second phase of the study, based on both systems. Eventually, the findings were statistically analyzed with Cohen's kappa coefficient (1) and reported. Results: According to the results, the lichen planus was detected in 8 cases using the WHO method, and in 41 cases using the Mod.WHO method. Intrarater Kappa coefficients were 1 = 0.114, P = 0.299; 5 = 0.181, P = 0.012; and = 0.062, P = 0.424 for three pathologists, respectively. The findings showed no reproducibility (1 = 0.148, P = 0.024) and there was no correlation between the two systems. Statistical analysis revealed that the histopathological criteria of the WHO classification for detecting the lichen planus microscopy were more sensitive but the Mod.WHO classification criteria were more specific for detecting the lichen planus. Conclusions: Due to the higher specificity of the histopathological criteria of Mod.WHO classification rather than WHO classification, it seems that Mod.WHO classification has more important and useful criteria for histopathological diagnosis. Finally, we can conclude that the use histopathologic criteria of the Mod.WHO classification is more useful in the diagnosis of lichen planus, although it should be in combination with clinical information. Background: The clinical significance of plasma lipoprotein levels in the diagnosis and prognosis of certain diseases is known fact. Some studies have reported different and contradictory levels of blood lipoproteins in cancer patients. Therefore, we decided to compare lipid profiles in patients with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and healthy individuals. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, lipid biomarkers in blood plasma of 64 patients with BCC compared with biomarkers in 64 healthy subjects. According to including criteria's both group selected. 5 cc blood samples taken after 8–12 h of fasting. Ultimately, the diagnosis of biopsy samples confirmed by the dermatopathologist. The information data entered into the PASS II software and then characterized by a descriptive and analytical statistics of the lipid profile. The role of the related factors was assessed by two sample t-test power analysis. Results: In this research, mean age of patient group and the healthy one was 67.13 ± 11.33 and 64.31 ± 6.98, respectively. The average amount of triglyceride, cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein in the BCC patients were 147.97 ± 87.11 mg/dl, 188.25 ± 38.90 mg/dl, 61.98 ± 18.61 mg/dl and 95.98 ± 31.69 mg/dl, respectively, whereas these amounts in the control group were 137.34 ± 61.41 mg/dl, 173.22 ± 38.79 mg/dl, 42.34 ± 7.83 mg/dl and 106.44 ± 35.17 mg/dl, respectively. There were statistically significant differences between cholesterol and HDL in patients with BCC and healthy controls, respectively (P = 0.030) (P < 0.001). Conclusion: It seems that changes in lipid profile can help as a diagnostic marker for detecting cancer like BCC. Desmoplastic fibroma is a rare, benign fibrous tumor of bone which is locally aggressive. The mandible is the most prevalent affected of the facial bones. Nevertheless, reports of desmoplastic fibroma affecting the mandible are seldom in the literature. It causes bone destruction and has a high tendency for local recurrence. Background and objective: Today, the chemical materials available in hair dyes are considered risk factors for many cancers, particularly oral cancer. This study was performed to study the effect of occupational exposure on micronucleus (MN) frequency of buccal mucosa cells in hairdressers. Materials and methods: This historical cohort study was performed on 28 hairdressers and 28 control samples. To eliminate the gender variable, all the samples were women and they were matched by age. Buccal mucosa cells were removed using a wet spatula and after fixation, Papanicolaou staining method was applied. The percentage of the cells containing MN was registered. T-test was used to compare the results between the two groups. Results: The mean percentages of MN in buccal mucosa cells of hairdresser’s and control sample were 16.61±4.95 and 8.84±4.74, respectively, with a significant difference (P<0.001). In addition, higher MN mean percentage was reported in subjects working more than 60 hours weekly compared with those working 60 hours and less; however, the difference was not statistically significant (P=0.14). Conclusion: In the present study, hairdressers demonstrate significantly higher average of MN in buccal mucosa cells. Aim: Despite advances in the treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), its prognosis is still poor. Therefore, it is important to identify the prognostic factors. The aim was to investigate the level of bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) in SCC of tongue and its relationship with some clinicopathologic parameters., Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 128 patients with primary SCC of tongue were evaluated. Data were extracted and paraffin blocks were retrieved from the archives of Emam Khomeini Hospital, Tehran, and immunohistochemistry staining was done for the detection of marker. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16 and through chi-square and logistic regression tests., Results: The highest level of BMP7 expression was 54% in men (p = 0.044), 70% in the group aged under 45 years (p = 0.001), 68.2% in patients with lymph node metastasis (p < 0.001), and 100% in those with poorly differentiated tumors (p < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, the presence of lymph node metastasis and increased histopathological grade associated with 5.7 fold and 4.3 fold increase in the odds ratio (OR) of BMP7 expression respectively., Conclusion: Based on the results, there was a significant relationship between BMP7 expression and poor cellular differentiation and lymph node metastasis, so this marker could be a new prognostic marker in oral cancer., Clinical Significance: This new marker could help clinicians to determine the prognosis of oral cancer, so it has an effect on optimal treatment.
