27. Advances in the development of a cognitive user interface

Abstract

In this contribution, we want to summarize recent development steps of the embedded cognitive user interface UCUI, which enables a user-adaptive scenario in human-machine or even human-robot interactions by considering sophisticated cognitive and semantic modelling. The interface prototype is developed by different German institutes and companies with their steering teams at Fraunhofer IKTS and Brandenburg University of Technology. The interface prototype is able to communicate with users via speech and gesture recognition, speech synthesis and a touch display. The device includes an autarkic semantic processing and beyond a cognitive behavior control, which supports an intuitive interaction to control different kinds of electronic devices, e. g. in a smart home environment or in interactive respectively collaborative robotics. Contrary to available speech assistance systems such as Amazon Echo or Google Home, the introduced cognitive user interface UCUI ensures the user privacy by processing all necessary information without any network access of the interface device.

Erstmalig finden Sie in diesem Journal Praxisbeiträge zum Forschenden Lehren im Kontext der Fachwissenschaft, insbesondere zur Beforschung der eigenen Lehre. Der zugrundeliegende Ansatz des „Scholarship of Teaching and Learning“ (SoTL) hat sich mittlerweile in der angloamerikanischen und europäischen Hochschulbildung etabliert. Abstract

Despite the growing importance of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), its application is still challenging, limited, language-dependent, and requires considerable resources. The resources required for ASR are not only technical, they also need to reflect technological trends and cultural diversity. The purpose of this research is to explore ASR performance gaps by a comparative study of American English, German, and Hebrew. Apart from different languages, we also investigate different speaking styles - utterances from spontaneous dialogues and utterances from frontal lectures (TED-like genre). The analysis includes a comparison of the performance of four ASR engines (Google Cloud, Google Search, IBM Watson, and WIT.ai) using four commonly used metrics: Word Error Rate (WER); Character Error Rate (CER); Word Information Lost (WIL); and Match Error Rate (MER). As expected, findings suggest that English ASR systems provide the best results. Contrary to our hypothesis regarding ASR's low performance for under-resourced languages, we found that the Hebrew and German ASR systems have similar performance. Overall, our findings suggest that ASR performance is language-dependent and system-dependent. Furthermore, ASR may be genre-sensitive, as our results showed for German. This research contributes a valuable insight for improving ubiquitous global consumption and management of knowledge and calls for corporate social responsibility of commercial companies, to develop ASR under Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) terms. En este artículo, se presentan los primeros pasos en el desarrollo de un sistema de enseñanza de la pronunciación asistida por ordenador (CAPT, Computer-Assisted Pronunciation Teaching) para el euskara. El punto de partida es un sistema estándar de reconocimiento automático del habla (ASR) basado en modelos ocultos de Markov (HMM) que maneja parámetros de confianza GOP (Goodness of Pronunciation) para la verificación de fonemas. Dicho ASR se integrará en AzAR, el software de entrenamiento de la pronunciación desarrollado para el alemán y varias lenguas eslavas. En este artículo se presentan los primeros pasos del diseño del currículum para el euskara, los problemas generados en la verificación por el uso de HMMs creados a partir de una base de datos de ASR, y algunos resultados iniciales., In this paper, the first steps of the development of a computer-assisted pronunciation teaching (CAPT) system for Basque are introduced. The baseline is a standard automatic speech recognition (ASR) system based on hidden Markov models (HMMs) that manages GOP (goodness of pronunciation) scores for phoneme verification. This ASR will be integrated into AzAR, the pronunciation training software developed for German and other Slavonic languages. This paper presents the initial steps in the design of the curriculum for Basque, some verification problems caused by the use of HMMs created from an ASR database, and some preliminary results.
