Abstract

We present the labscript suite, an open-source experiment control system for automating shot-based experiments and their analysis. Experiments are composed as Python code, which is used to produce low-level hardware instructions. They are queued up and executed on the hardware in real time, synchronized by a pseudoclock. Experiment parameters are manipulated graphically, and analysis routines are run as new data is acquired. With this system, we can easily automate exploration of parameter spaces, including closed-loop optimization., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. Copyright 2013 American Institute of Physics. 9. Enhancing Preschoolers' Executive Functions through Embedding Cognitive Activities in Shared Book Reading

Abstract

Given evidence that early executive functioning sets the stage for a broad range of subsequent outcomes, researchers have sought to identify ways to foster these cognitive capacities. The current series of studies sought to design, develop, and provide evidence for the efficacy of embedding cognitive activities in a commonplace activity--shared reading of a children's book. The book, "Quincey Quokka's Quest," required children to control their thinking and behavior to help the story's main character through a series of obstacles. The first study investigated effects of reading with embedded cognitive activities in individual and group contexts on young children's executive functions (EFs). The second study compared reading with embedded cognitive activities against a more active control condition (dialogic reading) that similarly engaged children in the reading process yet lacked clear engagement of EFs. The third study sought to investigate whether the effect of reading the story with embedded EF activities changed across differing doses of the intervention and whether effects persisted 2 months post-intervention. All studies provided evidence of intervention effects on shifting, with working memory benefits shown in two of the three studies, in as little as 3 weeks (compared to more traditional reading). Study 3 further indicated maintenance of these gains 2 months later. This suggests the efficacy of embedding cognitive activities in the context of everyday activities, thereby extending the range of users and contexts in which this approach can be used.

16. Neuromodulation to Treat Substance Use Disorders in People With Schizophrenia and Other Psychoses: A Systematic Review

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a common yet poorly studied comorbidity in individuals with psychotic disorders. The co-occurrence of the two complicates recovery and interferes with pharmacological and behavioral treatment response and adherence. Recently, researchers have been exploring both invasive and non-invasive neuromodulation techniques as potential treatment methods for SUDs. We review the evidence that neuromodulation may reduce substance craving and consumption in individuals with schizophrenia. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search of PubMed, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO databases was conducted (N = 1,432). Of these, we identified seven studies examining the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and two studies using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on drug consumption and craving in schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorders. RESULTS: Despite the limited number of studies in this area, the evidence suggests that rTMS to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) may reduce cannabis and tobacco use in patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Findings with tDCS, however, were inconclusive. DISCUSSION: Our systematic review suggests that rTMS applied to DLPFC is a safe and promising therapeutic technique for the management of comorbid schizophrenia and SUDs, with the majority of the evidence in tobacco use disorder. However, there was substantial heterogeneity in study methods, underscoring the need to optimize stimulation parameters (e.g., frequency, duration, and target regions). Larger clinical trials are needed to establish the efficacy of rTMS in reducing drug consumption and craving in psychotic patients, ideally in comparison to existing pharmacological and behavioral interventions.

17. Neurocognitive moderation of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) effects on cannabis use in schizophrenia: a preliminary analysis

Abstract

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a promising treatment for cannabis use disorder in schizophrenia; however, gaps in the literature remain as to the potential role of neurocognitive functioning in treatment response. We evaluated the moderating role of select cognitive functions including baseline executive functioning, verbal memory, and sustained attention, and we explore the mediating role of changes in task performance on changes in cannabis use in both active and sham rTMS groups. Participants underwent high-frequency (20 Hz) rTMS applied to the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex 5x/week for 4 weeks. Weekly self-report of cannabis use and semi-quantitative urinary carboxy-tetrahydrocannabinol levels were recorded. A neurocognitive battery assessing verbal memory, visuospatial working memory, verbal working memory, sustained attention, delayed discounting, and complex planning was administered pre- and post-treatment. Better baseline performance on tasks assessing sustained attention, delayed discounting, and complex planning moderated the extent to which participants in the active group reduced cannabis use. There were no significant indirect pathways between treatment, changes in neuropsychological performance, and changes in cannabis use; however, active rTMS improved complex planning and sustained attention. These preliminary findings suggest that there is a moderating role of sustained attention, delayed discounting, and complex planning on the effects of rTMS on cannabis use. Further, mediation models suggest rTMS may exert direct effects on cannabis use independent of its effects on cognitive functioning in people with SCZ. 21. Evaluation of the AirgloveTM, An Air-Regulated Thermal-Venodilatory Device Facilitating the Cannulation of Patients With Difficult Venous Access

Abstract

Background Difficult venous access (DVA) can prevent delivery of life-saving intravenous (IV) fluids and medication. The Airglove™ was developed to facilitate IV access, circumventing DVA in chemotherapy patients, as current warm-water immersion (WWI) methods are sub-optimal. Methods This study had two parts; EAGLE-1, an observational, proof-of-concept study and EAGLE-2, a prospective, cross-sectional comparative study. EAGLE-1 recruited 80 adult participants undergoing chemotherapy for cancer with DVA where venous cannula insertion success rate was evaluated using Airglove™. EAGLE-2 was carried out on 34 adult healthy participants where the degree of venodilation by WWI and AirGlove™ in three veins; cubital-fossa cephalic vein, cubital-fossa median vein and the third dorsal carpal vein on both arms were measured using the GE Logic S8 multi-frequency linear-array transducer (L6-15MHz), two-dimension B-mode ultrasound. Baseline measurements were taken at 23oC, forearms were warmed to 38oC using the two modalities prior to ultrasound assessment. Results An IV cannulation success-rate of 87.5% was achieved with the Airglove™ in EAGLE-1. The EAGLE-2 study demonstrated significant venodilation enhancement in all veins examined (p ™. BMI, percentage body-fat, age, gender, or blood-pressure did not significantly influence the degree of venodilation. Conclusions Airglove™ enabled a significant percentage of successful cannulations in participants with DVA in EAGLE-1. EAGLE-2 demonstrated that Airglove™ significantly enhanced venodilation compared to WWI. There may be potential for Airglove™ to be considered in specific clinical settings where DVA is encountered.

Abstract

HIRAD (Hurricane Imaging Radiometer) flew on the WB-57 during NASA's GRIP (Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes) campaign in August - September of 2010. HIRAD is a new C-band radiometer using a synthetic thinned array radiometer (STAR) technology to obtain cross-track resolution of approximately 3 degrees, out to approximately 60 degrees to each side of nadir. By obtaining measurements of emissions at 4, 5, 6, and 6.6 GHz, observations of ocean surface wind speed and rain rate can be inferred. This technique has been used for many years by precursor instruments, including the Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SFMR), which has been flying on the NOAA and USAF hurricane reconnaissance aircraft for several years. The advantage of HIRAD over SFMR is that HIRAD can observe a +/- 60-degree swath, rather than a single footprint at nadir angle. Results from the flights during the GRIP campaign will be shown, including images of brightness temperatures, wind speed, and rain rate. To the extent possible, comparisons will be made with observations from other instruments on the GRIP campaign, for which HIRAD observations are either directly comparable or are complementary. Potential impacts on operational ocean surface wind analyses and on numerical weather forecasts will also be discussed.
