Narrow-band HST imaging has resolved the detailed internal structure of the 10 kpc diameter H alpha+[NII] emission line nebulosity in NGC4696, the central galaxy in the nearby Centaurus cluster, showing that the dusty, molecular, filaments have a width of about 60pc. Optical morphology and velocity measurements indicate that the filaments are dragged out by the bubbling action of the radio source as part of the AGN feedback cycle. Using the drag force we find that the magnetic field in the filaments is in approximate pressure equipartition with the hot gas. The filamentary nature of the cold gas continues inward, swirling around and within the Bondi accretion radius of the central black hole, revealing the magnetic nature of the gas flows in massive elliptical galaxies. We present a dynamical analysis of the merging galaxy cluster system Abell 2146 using spectroscopy obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on the Gemini North telescope. As revealed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the system is undergoing a major merger and has a gas structure indicative of a recent first core passage. The system presents two large shock fronts, making it unique amongst these rare systems. The hot gas structure indicates that the merger axis must be close to the plane of the sky and that the two merging clusters are relatively close in mass, from the observation of two shock fronts. Using 63 spectroscopically determined cluster members, we apply various statistical tests to establish the presence of two distinct massive structures. With the caveat that the system has recently undergone a major merger, the virial mass estimate is M_vir = 8.5 +4.3 -4.7 x 10 ^14 M_sol for the whole system, consistent with the mass determination in a previous study using the Sunyaev-Zeldovich signal. The newly calculated redshift for the system is z = 0.2323. Many massive galaxies at the centres of relaxed galaxy clusters and groups have vast reservoirs of cool (~10,000 K) and cold (~100 K) gas. In many low redshift brightest group and cluster galaxies this gas is lifted into the hot ISM in filamentary structures, which are long lived and are typically not forming stars. Two important questions are how far do these reservoirs cool and if cold gas is abundant what is the cause of the low star formation efficiency? Heating and excitation of the filaments from collisions and mixing of hot particles in the surrounding X-ray gas describes well the optical and near infra-red line ratios observed in the filaments. In this paper we examine the theoretical properties of dense, cold clouds emitting in the far infra-red and submillimeter through the bright lines of [C II]157 \mu m , [O I]63 \mu m and CO, exposed to these energetic ionising particles. While some emission lines may be optically thick we find this is not sufficient to model the emission line ratios. Models where the filaments are supported by thermal pressure support alone also cannot account for the cold gas line ratios but a very modest additional pressure support, either from turbulence or magnetic fields can fit the observed [O I]/[C II] line ratios by decreasing the density of the gas. This may also help stabilise the filaments against collapse leading to the low rates of star formation. Finally we make predictions for the line ratios expected from cold gas under these conditions and present diagnostic diagrams for comparison with further observations. We announce a new facility in the spectral code CLOUDY that enables tracking the evolution of a cooling parcel of gas with time. For gas cooling from temperatures relevant to galaxy clusters, earlier calculations estimated the [Fe XIV] {\lambda}5303 / [Fe X] {\lambda}6375 luminosity ratio, a critical diagnostic of a cooling plasma, to slightly less than unity. By contrast, our calculations predict a ratio ~3. We revisit recent optical coronal line observations along the X-ray cool arc around NGC 4696 by Canning et al. (2011), which detected [Fe X] {\lambda}6375, but not [Fe XIV] {\lambda}5303. We show that these observations are not consistent with predictions of cooling flow models. Differential extinction could in principle account for the observations, but it requires extinction levels (A_V > 3.625) incompatible with previous observations. The non-detection of [Fe XIV] implies a temperature ceiling of 2.1 million K. Assuming cylindrical geometry and transonic turbulent pressure support, we estimate the gas mass at ~1 million solar masses. The coronal gas is cooling isochorically. We propose that the coronal gas has not condensed out of the intracluster medium, but instead is the conductive or mixing interface between the X-ray plume and the optical filaments. We examine the star formation in the outer halo of NGC~1275, the central galaxy in the Perseus cluster (Abell 426), using far ultraviolet and optical images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. We have identified a population of very young, compact star clusters with typical ages of a few Myr. The star clusters are organised on multiple-kiloparsec scales. Many of these star clusters are associated with "streaks" of young stars, the combination of which has a cometary appearance. We perform photometry on the star clusters and diffuse stellar streaks, and fit their spectral energy distributions to obtain ages and masses. These young stellar populations appear to be normal in terms of their masses, luminosities and cluster formation efficiency; <10% of the young stellar mass is located in star clusters. Our data suggest star formation is associated with the evolution of some of the giant gas filaments in NGC~1275 that become gravitationally unstable on reaching and possibly stalling in the outer galaxy. The stellar streaks then could represent stars moving on ballistic orbits in the potential well of the galaxy cluster. We propose a model where star-forming filaments, switched on ~50~Myr ago and are currently feeding the growth of the NGC~1275 stellar halo at a rate of ~2-3 solar masses per year. We report the results of a multi-wavelength study of the nearby galaxy group, Abell 3581 (z=0.0218). This system hosts the most luminous cool core of any nearby group and exhibits active radio mode feedback from the super-massive black hole in its brightest group galaxy, IC 4374. The brightest galaxy has suffered multiple active galactic nucleus outbursts, blowing bubbles into the surrounding hot gas, which have resulted in the uplift of cool ionised gas into the surrounding hot intragroup medium. High velocities, indicative of an outflow, are observed close to the nucleus and coincident with the radio jet. Thin dusty filaments accompany the uplifted, ionised gas. No extended star formation is observed, however, a young cluster is detected just north of the nucleus. The direction of rise of the bubbles has changed between outbursts. This directional change is likely due to sloshing motions of the intragroup medium. These sloshing motions also appear to be actively stripping the X-ray cool core, as indicated by a spiraling cold front of high metallicity, low temperature, low entropy gas., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Far ultraviolet emission has been detected from a knot of Halpha emission in the Horseshoe filament, far out in the NGC 1275 nebula. The flux detected relative to the brightness of the Halpha line in the same spatial region is very close to that expected from Hydrogen two-photon continuum emission in the particle heating model of Ferland et al. (2009) if reddening internal to the filaments is taken into account. We find no need to invoke other sources of far ultraviolet emission such as hot stars or emission lines from CIV in intermediate temperature gas to explain these data., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. We present a 100 ks Chandra observation studying the extended X-ray emission around the powerful z=1.04 quasar PKS1229-021. The diffuse cluster X-ray emission can be traced out to ~15 arcsec (~120 kpc) radius and there is a drop in the calculated hardness ratio inside the central 5 arcsec consistent with the presence of a cool core. Radio observations of the quasar show a strong core and a bright, one-sided jet leading to the SW hot spot and a second hot spot visible on the counter-jet side. Although the wings of the quasar PSF provided a significant contribution to the total X-ray flux at all radii where the extended cluster emission was detected, we were able to accurately subtract off the PSF emission using ChaRT and marx simulations. The resulting steep cluster surface brightness profile for PKS1229-021 appears similar to the profile for the FRII radio galaxy 3C444, which has a similarly rapid surface brightness drop caused by a powerful shock surrounding the radio lobes (Croston et al.). Using a model surface brightness profile based on 3C444, we estimated the total cluster luminosity for PKS1229-021 to be L_X ~ 2 x 10^{44} erg/s. We present results of deep integral field spectroscopy observations using high resolution optical (4150-7200 A) VIMOS VLT spectra, of NGC 4696, the dominant galaxy in the Centaurus cluster (Abell 3526). After the Virgo cluster, this is the second nearest (z=0.0104) example of a cool core cluster. NGC 4696 is surrounded by a vast, luminous H alpha emission line nebula (L = 2.2 \times 10^40 ergs per second). We explore the origin and excitation of the emission-line filaments and find their origin consistent with being drawn out, under rising radio bubbles, into the intracluster medium as in other similar systems. Contrary to previous observations we do not observe evidence for shock excitation of the outer filaments. We present new Chandra images of the X-ray emission from the core of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. The total observation time is now 1.4 Ms. New depressions in X-ray surface brightness are discovered to the north of NGC1275, which we interpret as old rising bubbles. They imply that bubbles are long-lived and do not readily breakup when rising in the hot cluster atmosphere. The existence of a 300 kpc long NNW-SSW bubble axis means there cannot be significant transverse large scale flows exceeding 100 km/s. Interesting spatial correlations are seen along that axis in early deep radio maps. A semi-circular cold front about 100 kpc west of the nucleus is seen. It separates an inner disturbed region dominated by the activity of the active nucleus of NGC1275 from the outer region where a subcluster merger dominates., Comment: 12 pages, 17 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The brightest galaxy in the nearby Perseus cluster, NGC1275, is surrounded by a network of filaments. These were first observed through their Halpha emission but are now known to have a large molecular component with a total mass approaching 10^11Msun of gas. The filaments are embedded in hot intracluster gas and stretch over 80 kpc. They have an unusual low excitation spectrum which is well modelled by collisional heating and ionization by secondary electrons. Here we note that the surface radiative flux from the outer filaments is close to the energy flux impacting on them from particles in the hot gas. We propose that the secondary electrons within the cold filaments, which excite the observed submillimetre through UV emission, are due to the hot surrounding gas efficiently penetrating the cold gas through reconnection diffusion. Some of the soft X-ray emission seen from the filaments is then due to charge exchange, although this is insufficient to account for all the observed X-ray flux. The filaments are complex with multiphase gas. Interpenetration of hot and cold gas leads to the filaments growing in mass, at a rate of up to 100Msunpyr. The lack of soft X-ray cooling emission in cool core clusters is then due to the non-radiative cooling of hot gas on mixing with cold gas around and within the central galaxy., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, MNRAS in press

We report a detection (3.5x10^37 \pm 5.6x10^36 ergps) of the optical coronal emission line [Fe X]6374 and upper limits of four other coronal lines using high resolution VIMOS spectra centred on NGC 4696, the brightest cluster galaxy in the Centaurus cluster. Emission from these lines is indicative of gas at temperatures between 1 and 5 million K so traces the interstellar gas in NGC 4696. The rate of cooling derived from the upper limits is consistent with the cooling rate from X-ray observations (~10 solar masses per year) however we detect twice the luminosity expected for [Fe X]6374 emission, at 1 million K, our lowest temperature probe. We suggest this emission is due to the gas being heated rather than cooling out of the intracluster medium. We detect no coronal lines from [Ca XV], which are expected from the 5 million K gas seen near the centre in X-rays with Chandra. Calcium is however likely to be depleted from the gas phase onto dust grains in the central regions of NGC 4696., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The dust destruction timescales in the cores of clusters of galaxies are relatively short given their high central gas densities. However, substantial mid-infrared and sub-mm emission has been detected in many brightest cluster galaxies. In this letter we present Herschel PACS and SPIRE photometry of the brightest cluster galaxy in three strong cooling flow clusters, A1068, A2597 and Zw3146. This photometry indicates that a substantial mass of cold dust is present (>3 x 10^7 Mo) at temperatures significantly lower (20-28K) than previously thought based on limited MIR and/or sub-mm results. The mass and temperature of the dust appear to match those of the cold gas traced by CO with a gas-to-dust ratio of 80-120., Comment: Accepted for A&A Herschel Special Issue, 7 pages, 3 figures

The question of how much gas cools in the cores of clusters of galaxies has been the focus of many, multiwavelength studies in the past 30 years. In this letter we present the first detections of the strongest atomic cooling lines, [C II], [O I] and [N I] in two strong cooling flow clusters, A1068 and A2597, using Herschel PACS. These spectra indicate that the substantial mass of cold molecular gas (>10^9 Mo) known to be present in these systems is being irradiated by intense UV radiation, most probably from young stars. The line widths of these FIR lines indicate that they share dynamics similar but not identical to other ionised and molecular gas traced by optical, near-infrared and CO lines. The relative brightness of the FIR lines compared to CO and FIR luminosity is consistent with other star-forming galaxies indicating that the properties of the molecular gas clouds in cluster cores and the stars they form are not unusual. These results provide additional evidence for a reservoir of cold gas that is fed by the cooling of gas in the cores of the most compact clusters and provide important diagnostics of the temperature and density of the dense clouds this gas resides in., Comment: Accepted for the A&A Herschel Special Issue, 5 pages, 2 figures

We present photometry of the outer star clusters in NGC 1275, the brightest galaxy in the Perseus cluster. The observations were taken using the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys. We focus on two stellar regions in the south and south-east, far from the nucleus of the low velocity system (~22 kpc). These regions of extended star formation trace the H alpha filaments, drawn out by rising radio bubbles. In both regions bimodal distributions of colour (B-R)_0 against magnitude are apparent, suggesting two populations of star clusters with different ages; most of the H alpha filaments show no detectable star formation. The younger, bluer population is found to be concentrated along the filaments while the older population is dispersed evenly about the galaxy. We construct colour-magnitude diagrams and derive ages of at most 10^8 years for the younger population, a factor of 10 younger than the young population of star clusters in the inner regions of NGC 1275. We conclude that a formation mechanism or event different to that for the young inner population is needed to explain the outer star clusters and suggest that formation from the filaments, triggered by a buoyant radio bubble either rising above or below these filaments, is the most likely mechanism., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 14 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables

We present a Chandra observation of the only low redshift, z=0.299, galaxy cluster to contain a highly luminous radio-quiet quasar, H1821+643. By simulating the quasar PSF, we subtract the quasar contribution from the cluster core and determine the physical properties of the cluster gas down to 3 arcsec (15 kpc) from the point source. The temperature of the cluster gas decreases from 9.0\pm0.5 keV down to 1.3\pm0.2 keV in the centre, with a short central radiative cooling time of 1.0\pm0.1 Gyr, typical of a strong cool-core cluster. The X-ray morphology in the central 100 kpc shows extended spurs of emission from the core, a small radio cavity and a weak shock or cold front forming a semi-circular edge at 15 arcsec radius. The quasar bolometric luminosity was estimated to be 2 x 10^{47} erg per sec, requiring a mass accretion rate of 40 Msolar per yr, which corresponds to half the Eddington accretion rate. We explore possible accretion mechanisms for this object and determine that Bondi accretion, when boosted by Compton cooling of the accretion material, could provide a significant source of the fuel for this outburst. We consider H1821+643 in the context of a unified AGN accretion model and, by comparing H1821+643 with a sample of galaxy clusters, we show that the quasar has not significantly affected the large-scale cluster gas properties., Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures, accepted by MNRAS

[Abridged] Photoionization, whether by starlight or other sources, has difficulty in accounting for the observed spectra of the optical filaments that often surround central galaxies in large clusters. Our first paper examined whether heating by energetic particles or dissipative MHD wave can account for the observations. Here we include atomic and low-ionization regions. The model of the hydrogen atom, along with all elements of the H-like iso-electronic sequence, is now fully nl-resolved. We show how the predicted HI spectrum differs from the pure recombination case. The second update is to the rates for H^0 - H2 inelastic collisions. We now use the values computed by Wrathmall et al. The rates are often much larger. We calculate the chemistry, ionization, temperature, gas pressure, and emission-line spectrum for a wide range of gas densities and collisional heating rates. We assume that the filaments are magnetically confined and free to move along field lines so that the gas pressure is equal to that of the surrounding hot gas. A mix of clouds, some being dense and cold and others hot and tenuous, can exist. The observed spectrum will be the integrated emission from clouds with different densities and temperatures but the same pressure. We assume that the gas filling factor is given by a power law in density. The power-law index is set by matching the observed intensities of IR H2 lines relative to optical HI lines. We conclude that the filaments are heated by ionizing particles, either conducted in from surrounding regions or produced in situ by processes related to MHD waves., Comment: 28 pages, 21 figures, accepted to MNRAS

The giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1275, at the centre of the Perseus cluster, is surrounded by a well-known giant nebulosity of emission-line filaments, which are plausibly about >10^8 yr old. The filaments are dragged out from the centre of the galaxy by the radio bubbles rising buoyantly in the hot intracluster gas before later falling back. They act as dramatic markers of the feedback process by which energy is transferred from the central massive black hole to the surrounding gas. The mechanism by which the filaments are stabilized against tidal shear and dissipation into the surrounding 4x10^7 K gas has been unclear. Here we report new observations that resolve thread-like structures in the filaments. Some threads extend over 6 kpc, yet are only 70 pc wide. We have recently detected CO lines in the well-known filaments around NGC 1275, the galaxy at the centre of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. These previous observations, with the HERA multi-beam array at the IRAM 30m telescope enabled us to make a large map of the CO(2-1) line and to see hints of molecular gas far away from the cluster centre. To confirm the presence of CO emission lines in the outer filaments and to study the CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) line ratio, we observed seven regions of interest again with the 30m telescope in both CO(1-0) and CO(2-1). The regions we observed were: the eastern filament, the horseshoe, the northern filament and a southern extension, all selected from Halpha emission line mapping. Molecular gas is detected in all the observed regions. This result confirms the large extent of the cold molecular gas filaments. We discuss the CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) ratios in the filaments. The eastern filament has optically thick gas, whereas further away, the line ratio increases close to values expected for a warmer optically thin medium. We also show CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) lines in 9 regions closer to the centre. The kinematics of the CO is studied here in more detail and confirms that it follows the motions of the warm H_2 gas found in the near-infrared. The optical filaments found in many cooling flows in galaxy clusters consist of low density ($\sim 10^3 \pcc$) cool ($\sim 10^3$ K) gas surrounded by significant amounts of cosmic-ray and magnetic-field energy. Their spectra show anomalously strong low-ionization and molecular emission lines when compared with galactic molecular clouds exposed to ionizing radiation such as the Orion complex. Previous studies have shown that the spectra cannot be produced by O-star photoionization. Here we calculate the physical conditions in dusty gas that is well shielded from external sources of ionizing photons and is energized either by cosmic rays or dissipative MHD waves. Strong molecular hydrogen lines, with relative intensities similar to those observed, are produced. Selection effects introduced by the microphysics produce a correlation between the \htwo line upper level energy and the population temperature. These selection effects allow a purely collisional gas to produce \htwo emission that masquerades as starlight-pumped \htwo but with intensities that are far stronger. We use a deep XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer observation to examine the X-ray emission from the core of the Centaurus cluster of galaxies. We clearly detect Fe-XVII emission at four separate wavelengths, indicating the presence of cool X-ray emitting gas in the core of the cluster. Fe ions from Fe-XVII to XXIV are observed. The ratio of the Fe-XVII 17.1A lines to 15.0A line and limits on O-VII emission indicate a lowest detected temperature in the emitting region of 0.3 to 0.45 keV (3.5 to 5.2x10^6 K). The cluster also exhibits strong N-VII emission, making it apparent that the N abundance is supersolar in its very central regions. Comparison of the strength of the Fe-XVII lines with a Solar metallicity cooling flow model in the inner 17 kpc radius gives mass deposition rates in the absence of heating of 1.6-3 Msun/yr. Spectral fitting implies an upper limit of 0.8 Msun/yr below 0.4 keV, 4 Msun/yr below 0.8 keV and 8 Msun/yr below 1.6 keV. The cluster contains X-ray emitting gas over at least the range of 0.35 to 3.7 keV, a factor of more than 10 in temperature. We find that the best fitting metallicity of the cooler components is smaller than the hotter ones, confirming that the apparent metallicity does decline within the inner 1 arcmin radius., Comment: 15 pages, 20 figures, 5 with colour, accepted by MNRAS, now includes minor corrections suggested by referee, in particular a plot showing the ratios of abundances compared to Chandra

Cold molecular gas has been recently detected in several cooling flow clusters of galaxies where huge optical nebulosities often stand. These optical filaments are tightly linked to the cooling flow and to the related phenomena, like the rising bubbles of relativistic plasma, fed by the radio jets. We present here a map in the CO(2-1) rotational line of the cold molecular gas associated with some Halpha filaments surrounding the central galaxy of the Perseus cluster: NGC 1275. The map, extending to about 50 kpc (135 arcsec) from the center of the galaxy, has been made with the 18-receiver array HERA, at the focus of the IRAM 30m telescope. Although most of the cold gas is concentrated to the center of the galaxy, the CO emission is also clearly associated to the extended filaments conspicuous in ionised gas and could trace a possible reservoir fueling the star formation there. Some of the CO emission is also found where the X-ray gas could cool down more efficiently: at the rims of the central X-ray cavity (where the hot gas is thought to have been pushed out and compressed by the central AGN expanding radio lobes). The CO global kinematics does not show any rotation in NGC 1275. The cold gas is probably a mixture of gas falling down on the central galaxy and of uplifted gas dragged out by a rising bubble in the intracluster medium. As recenlty suggested in other cluster cores, the cold gas peculiar morphology and kinematics argue for the picture of an intermittent cooling flow scenario where the central AGN plays an important role., Comment: Accepted in A&A, 12 pages

We use line-of-sight velocity information on the filamentary emission-line nebula of NGC 1275 to infer a dynamical model of the nebula's flow through the surrounding intracluster gas. We detect outflowing gas and flow patterns that match simulations of buoyantly rising bubbles from which we deduce that some of the nebula filaments have been drawn out of NGC 1275. We find a radial gradient of the ratio [NII]6584/H-alpha which may be due to a variation in metallicity, interactions with the surrounding intracluster medium or a hardening of the excitation mechanism. We find no preferred spatial correlation of stellar clusters within the filaments and there is a notable lack of [OIII]5007 emission, therefore it is unlikely that the filaments are ionized by stellar UV., Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures. We present the first results from a very deep Chandra X-ray observation of the core of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. A pressure map reveals a clear thick band of high pressure around the inner radio bubbles. The gas in the band must be expanding outward and the sharp front to it is identified as a shock front, yet we see no temperature jump across it; indeed there is more soft emission behind the shock than in front of it. We conclude that in this inner region either thermal conduction operates efficiently or the co-existing relativistic plasma seen as the radio mini-halo is mediating the shock. If common, isothermal shocks in cluster cores mean that we cannot diagnose the expansion speed of radio bubbles from temperature measurements alone. They can at times expand more rapidly than currently assumed without producing significant regions of hot gas. Bubbles may also be significantly more energetic. The pressure ripples found in earlier images are identified as isothermal sound waves. A simple estimate based on their amplitude confirms that they can be an effective distributed heat source able to balance radiative cooling. We see multiphase gas with about 10^9 Msun at a temperature of about 0.5 keV. Much, but not all, of this cooler gas is spatially associated with the optical filamentary nebula around the central galaxy, NGC 1275. A residual cooling flow of about 50 Msun/yr may be taking place. A channel is found in the pressure map along the path of the bubbles, with indications found of outer bubbles. We present a Chandra study of 38 X-ray luminous clusters of galaxies in the ROSAT Brightest Cluster Sample (BCS) that lie at z~0.15-0.4. We find that the majority of clusters at moderate redshift generally have smooth, relaxed morphologies with some evidence for mild substructure perhaps indicative of recent minor merger activity. Using spatially-resolved spectral analyses, cool cores appear to still be common at these redshifts. At a radius of 50 kpc, we find that at least 55 per cent of the clusters in our sample exhibit signs of mild cooling [t(cool)<10 Gyr], while in the central bin at least 34 per cent demonstrate signs of strong cooling [t(cool)<2 Gyr]. These percentages are nearly identical to those found for luminous, low-redshift clusters of galaxies, suggesting little evolution in cluster cores since z~0.4 and that heating and cooling mechanisms may already have stabilised by this epoch. Comparing the central cooling times to central Halpha emission in BCS clusters, we find a strong correspondence between the detection of Halpha and central cooling time. We present near-infrared integral field spectroscopy of the central kiloparsec of NGC 1275 at the heart of the Perseus cluster of galaxies, obtained with the UIST IFU on UKIRT. The nuclear ro-vibrational H_2 emission is spatially resolved and is likely to originate approximately 50 pc from the active nucleus. The Pa-alpha emission is, by contrast, spatially unresolved. The requirements for thermal excitation of the H_2 by nuclear X-radiation, its kinematics on sub-arcsec scales, and its stability against self-gravity, together suggest that the observed H_2 is part of a clumpy disk rotating about the radio-jet axis. The sharp jump in H_2 velocity across the nucleus implies a black hole mass of 3.4E8 M(Solar), with a systematic error of 0.18 dex due to the uncertainty in the radio jet inclination. This agrees well with the value implied by the empirical correlation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion for nearby elliptical galaxies, and is ~100 times the stellar mass in this region., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures; accepted by MNRAS

We present clear spectroscopic detections of molecular hydrogen in the outer filaments of the H-alpha nebula surrounding the central galaxy of the Perseus cluster, NGC 1275. This implies the presence of warm molecular gas clouds at projected distances up to 24 kpc from the nucleus of the host galaxy, embedded in the hot intracluster medium. The emission-line intensity ratios reveal that the molecular hydrogen is predominately thermally excited with excitation temperatures of 1600-2200K, suggesting a lack of pressure balance between the molecular component and its surrounding medium. Excitation by stellar UV or by the central AGN is shown to be unlikely, whilst thermal excitation by X-rays or conduction from the ICM or shocks are all possibilities. We present results from an analysis of a Chandra observation of the cluster of galaxies Abell 3581. We discover the presence of a point-source in the central dominant galaxy which is coincident with the core of the radio source PKS 1404-267. The emission from the intracluster medium is analysed, both as seen in projection on the sky, and after correcting for projection effects, to determine the spatial distribution of gas temperature, density and metallicity. We find that the cluster, despite hosting a moderately powerful radio source, shows a temperature decline to around 0.4Tmax within the central 5 kpc. The cluster is notable for the low entropy within its core. We present a small sample of Chandra X-ray sources selected from the fields of ACIS observations which probe fluxes around the break in the hard band source counts. The targets of these fields include 9 nearby galaxy clusters, 1 distant cluster and 2 powerful radio galaxy fields. The follow-up of this serendipitous sample was biased towards X-ray hard and optically-dim sources mostly not seen on the Digitized Sky Survey; for these, we present X-ray fluxes, optical and near-infrared photometry leading to 51 photometric redshifts in all and 18 independently measured spectroscopic redshifts. Few sources are associated with the target fields themselves. Fifty-six of 58 sources imaged in the K-band are detected at K<~20 with K_median=18, and of these, 38 have hard X-ray count ratios and 24 of these are significantly hard with most of the counts emerging about 2 keV. We find that almost all are AGN hosted in massive early-type host galaxies with a photometric redshift distribution peaking at z~1. Two type 2 quasars with intrinsic X-ray luminosity L>~10^{45} erg/s, Fe K_alpha emission lines and absorbing column density nH>10^{23} cm^{-2} -- and nH>~10^{24} cm^{-2} in one case -- are discussed in detail; the sample contains at least 12 potential type 2 quasars in all. We discuss various detection strategies for type 2 quasars and calculate their inferred space density. We present preliminary results from a deep observation lasting almost 200 ks, of the centre of the Perseus cluster of galaxies around NGC 1275. The X-ray surface brightness of the intracluster gas beyond the inner 20 kpc, which contains the inner radio bubbles, is very smooth apart from some low amplitude quasi-periodic ripples. A clear density jump at a radius of 24 kpc to the NE, about 10 kpc out from the bubble rim, appears to be due to a weak shock driven by the northern radio bubble. A similar front may exist round both inner bubbles but is masked elsewhere by rim emission from bright cooler gas. The continuous blowing of bubbles by the central radio source, leading to the propagation of weak shocks and viscously-dissipating sound waves seen as the observed fronts and ripples, gives a rate of working which balances the radiative cooling within the inner 50 kpc of the cluster core., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (minor changes) Higher picture quality available from http://www-xray.ast.cam.ac.uk/papers/per_200ks.pdf

The origin of rovibrational H_2 emission in the central galaxies of cooling flow clusters is poorly understood. Here we address this issue using data from our near-infrared spectroscopic survey of 32 of the most line luminous such systems, presented in the companion paper by Edge et al. (2002). We consider excitation by X-rays from the surrounding intracluster medium, UV radiation from young stars, and shocks. The v=1-0 K-band lines with upper levels within 10^4 K of the ground state appear to be mostly thermalised (implying gas densities above ~10^5 cm^-3), with excitation temperatures typically exceeding 2000K, as found earlier by Jaffe, Bremer and van der Werf (2001). Together with the lack of strong v=2-0 lines in the H-band, this rules out UV fluorescence. Using the CLOUDY photoionisation code, we deduce that the H_2 lines can originate in a population of dense clouds, exposed to the same hot (T~50000K) stellar continuum as the lower density gas which produces the bulk of the forbidden optical line emission in the H-alpha luminous systems. This dense gas may be in the form of self-gravitating clouds deposited directly by the cooling flow, or may instead be produced in the high-pressure zones behind strong shocks. Furthermore, the shocked gas is likely to be gravitationally unstable, so collisions between the larger clouds may lead to the formation of globular clusters., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures; to appear in MNRAS alongside Edge et al. We present a large sample of H- and K-band spectra of 32 optically line luminous central cluster galaxies. We find significant rovibrational H_2 emission in 23 of these galaxies as well as H recombination and/or [FeII] emission in another 5. This represents a fourfold increase in the number of molecular line detections known. A number of the detections are of extended emission (5-20 kpc). In several objects we find significant [SiVI] emission that appears to correlate with the strength of high ionization lines in the optical (e.g. [OIII]). This comprehensive sample builds on previous work and confirms that warm (1000-2500K) molecular hydrogen is present wherever there is ionized material in the cores of cooling flows and in most cases it also coincides with CO molecular line emission., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures; to appear in MNRAS alongside Wilman et al. A Chandra observation of the radio-loud quasar 3C9 at redshift z=2.012 has revealed extended X-ray emission coincident with the radio jet. Of particular interest is the appearance of both jet and counterjet, which argues against the X-ray emission being highly beamed. We present the properties of the jets and discuss possible scenarios for the X-ray emission, contrasting them with the single sided jet found in PKS 0637-752, which has a similar X-ray luminosity. The jet X-ray emission in 3C9 is likely to be due to either nonthermal emission from a sheath with bulk Lorentz factor less than 1.5, or thermal emission from shocked cold gas surrounding the quasar. The thermal possibility implies a high mass for the cold gas unless it is highly clumped., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Chandra and XMM-Newton observations have confirmed the presence of large temperature gradients within the cores of many relaxed clusters of galaxies. Here we investigate whether thermal conduction operating over those gradients can supply sufficient heat to offset radiative cooling. Narayan & Medvedev (2001) and Gruzinov (2002) have noted, using published results on cluster temperatures, that conduction within a factor of a few of the Spitzer rate is sufficient to balance bremsstrahlung cooling. From a detailed study of the temperature and emission measure profiles of Abell 2199 and Abell 1835, we find that the heat flux required by conduction is consistent with or below the rate predicted by Spitzer in the outer regions of the core. Conduction may therefore explain the lack of observational evidence for large mass cooling rates inferred from arguments based simply on radiative cooling, provided that conductivity is suppressed by no more than a factor of three below the full Spitzer rate. To stem cooling in the cluster centre, however, would necessitate conductivity values at least a factor of two larger than the Spitzer values, which we consider implausible. This may provide an explanation for the observed star formation and optical nebulosities in cluster cores. The solution is likely to be time dependent. This is a progress report on our numerical simulations of conditions in the cold cores of cooling flow condensations. The physical conditions in any non-equilibrium plasma are the result of a host of microphysical processes, many involving reactions that are research areas in themselves. We review the dominant physical processes in our previously published simulations, to clarify those issues that have caused confusion in the literature. We show that conditions in the core of an X-ray illuminated cloud are very different from those found in molecular clouds, largely because carbon remains substantially atomic and provides powerful cooling through its far infrared lines. We show how the results of the Opacity Project have had a major impact on our predictions, largely because photoionization cross sections of atoms and first ions are now calculated to be far larger than previously estimated. Finally we show that the predicted conditions are strongly affected by such complexities as microturbulence or the presence of small amounts of dust. We present results from an analysis of two Chandra observations of the rich, nearby galaxy cluster Abell 2199. We find evidence (having corrected for projection effects) for radial gradients in temperature and metallicity in the X-ray emitting gas: the temperature drops from kT~4.2 keV at R=200 kpc to 1.6 keV within R=5 kpc of the centre. The metallicity rises from ~0.3 solar at R=200 kpc to ~0.7 solar at R=30 kpc before dropping to 0.3 solar within the central 5 kpc. We find evidence for structure in the surface brightness distribution associated with the central radio source 3C338. No evidence is found for the gas having a large spread in temperature at any particular location despite the cooling time being short (<10**9yr) within the central ~15 kpc. We present X-ray spatial and spectral analysis of the Chandra data from the central 400 kpc (H0 = 50 km/s/Mpc) of the cluster of galaxies Abell 1795. The plasma temperature rises outwards by a factor of 3, whereas the iron abundance decreases by a factor of 4. The spatial distribution of Oxygen, Neon, Sulphur, Silicon and Iron shows that supernovae Type Ia dominate the metal enrichment process of the cluster plasma within the inner 150 kpc. Resolving both the gas density and temperature in 9 radial bins, we recover the gravitational mass density profile and show that it flattens within 100 kpc as rho_DM \propto r^{-0.6} with a power law index flatter than -1 at >3 sigma level. The observed motion of the central galaxy and the presence of excesses and deficits along the North-South direction in the brightness distribution indicate that the central cluster region is not relaxed. In the absence of any non-gravitational heating source, the data from the inner ~200 kpc indicate the presence of a cooling flow with an integrated mass deposition rate of about 100 Msun/yr. Over the same cluster region, the observed rate of 74 Msun/yr is consistent with the recent XMM Reflection Grating Spectrometer limit of 150 Msun/yr., Comment: MNRAS in press. 15 pages

We describe progress in a programme to study a sample of sources typical of those which contribute a large fraction of the hard X-ray background. The sources are selected from the fields of approximately 10 ks Chandra cluster observations with follow-up in the near-infrared and optical. The X-ray data indicate that many of these are powerful, obscured sources. Two hard objects which are lensed by the cluster are good candidates for X-ray type-2 quasars, with luminosities of the order 10^{44}-10^{45} erg s^{-1} and obscuring column densities of the order 10^{23} cm^{-2}. We find that the sources are bright in the infra-red (K typically 17-18). From Keck optical spectra and photometric redshifts, we find that the host galaxies are consistent with being early-type, massive hosts at redshifts ranging from 0.2 to 3, with median redshift approximately 1.5. The two obscured quasars also have mid-infrared detections and 850-micron upper-limits implying that the surrounding dust is at warm-to-hot temperatures (T of the order of 1000 K)., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. We present optical spectra and near-infrared imaging of a sample of serendipitous X-ray sources detected in the field of Chandra observations of the A2390 cluster of galaxies. The sources have 0.5-7 keV fluxes of 0.6-8 x 10^{-14} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} and lie around the break in the 2-10 keV source counts. They therefore are typical of sources dominating the X-ray Background in that band. Twelve of the fifteen targets for which we have optical spectra show emission lines, most of which have soft X-ray spectra. Including photometric redshifts and published spectra we have redshifts for seventeen of the sources, ranging from z~0.2 up to z~3 with a peak between z=1-2. Ten of our sources have hard X-ray spectra indicating a spectral slope flatter than that of a typical unabsorbed quasar. Two hard sources that are gravitationally lensed by the foreground cluster are obscured quasars, with intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosities of 0.2-3 x 10^{45} erg/s and absorbing columns of N_H>10^{23} cm^{-2}. Both were detected by ISO, showing that the absorbed flux emerges in the far-infrared., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, 19 pages

We examine the properties of the X-ray gas in the central regions of the distant (z=0.46), X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies surrounding the powerful radio source 3C 295, using observations made with the Chandra Observatory. Between radii of 50-500 kpc, the cluster gas is approximately isothermal with an emission-weighted temperature, kT ~5 keV. Within the central 50 kpc radius this value drops to kT ~3.7 keV. The spectral and imaging Chandra data indicate the presence of a cooling flow within the central 50 kpc radius of the cluster, with a mass deposition rate of approximately 280 solar masses per year. We estimate an age for the cooling flow of 1-2 Gyr, which is approximately one thousand times older than the central radio source. We find no evidence in the X-ray spectra or images for significant heating of the X-ray gas by the radio source. We report the detection of an edge-like absorption feature in the spectrum for the central 50 kpc region, which may be due to oxygen-enriched dust grains. The implied mass in metals seen in absorption could have been accumulated by the cooling flow over its lifetime. Combining the results on the X-ray gas density profile with radio measurements of the Faraday rotation measure in 3C295, we estimate the magnetic field strength in the region of the cluster core to be B ~12 \muG., Comment: 27 pages, 16 figs, 5 tables. Chandra observations of low-luminosity supermassive black holes in nearby elliptical galaxies provide tight limits on both their nuclear luminosities and on their Bondi accretion rates. We examine Chandra constraints on NGC 6166, the dominant galaxy in the cluster Abell 2199, which hosts a \sim 10^9 \Msun black hole. We measure a nuclear X-ray luminosity L_{x} \sim 10^{40} erg/s and show that the density and temperature profiles of the hot interstellar medium imply a Bondi accretion rate of Mdot_{Bondi} \sim 3 10^{-2} Msun/yr. This accretion rate predicts a nuclear luminosity of \sim 10^{44} erg/s for a canonical radiative efficiency of 10%. Unless the Bondi estimate is inappropriate and/or the accretion rate onto the black hole is significantly reduced, the observed nuclear flux constrains the radiative efficiency of the accretion flow to be \eta \sim 10^{-5}. We show that low-radiative efficiency accretion flows with radial density profiles \rho \approxpropto r^{-3/2} (and not significantly flatter) can explain the observed nuclear X-ray luminosity but that the power output from the jets in NGC 6166 is also important to the energetics of the system., Comment: emulateapj.sty, submitted to ApJ Letters

We report the discovery of a 40 arcsec long X-ray filament in the core of the cluster of galaxies A1795. The feature coincides with an Halpha+NII filament found by Cowie et al in the early 1980s and resolved into at least 2 U-band filaments by McNamara et al in the mid 1990s. The (emission-weighted) temperature of the X-ray emitting gas along the filament is 2.5-3 keV, as revealed by X-ray colour ratios. The deprojected temperature will be less. A detailed temperature map of the core of the cluster presented. The cD galaxy at the head of the filament is probably moving through or oscillating in the cluster core. The radiative cooling time of the X-ray emitting gas in the filament is about 3x10^8 yr which is similar to the age of the filament obtained from its length and velocity. This suggests that the filament is produced by cooling of the gas from the intracluster medium. We present near-infrared spectra of seven radio-loud quasars with a median redshift of 2.1, five of which were previously known to have Ly alpha nebulae. Extended [OIII]5007 and H alpha emission are evident around six objects, at the level of a few times 1E-16 erg/cm^2/arcsec^2/s within 2 arcsec of the nucleus (16 kpc in the adopted cosmology). Nuclear [OII]3727 is detected in three of the 5 quasars studied at this wavelength, and clearly extended in one of them. The extended [OIII] tends to be brighter on the side of the nucleus with the stronger, jet-like radio emission, indicating at least that the extranuclear gas is distributed anisotropically. It is also redshifted by several hundred km/s from the nuclear [OIII], perhaps because the latter is blueshifted from the systemic velocity of the host galaxy. Alternatively, the velocity shifts could be due to infall (which is suggested by line widths ~1000 km/s FWHM) in combination with a suitable dust geometry. Lyalpha/Halpha ratios well below the case B value suggest that some dust is present. Photoionization modelling of the [OIII]/[OII] ratios in the extended gas suggests that its pressure is around or less than a few times 1E7 cm^-3 K; any confining intracluster medium may thus host a strong cooling flow. A comparison with lower-redshift work suggests that there has been little evolution in the nuclear emission line properties of radio-loud quasars between redshifts 1 and 2., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures; to appear in MNRAS

We report subarcsec-resolution X-ray imaging of the core of the Perseus cluster around the galaxy NGC 1275 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The ROSAT-discovered holes associated with the radio lobes have X-ray bright rims which are cooler than the surrounding gas and not due to shocks. The holes themselves may contain some hotter gas. We map strong photoelectric absorption across the Northern lobe and rim due to a small infalling irregular galaxy, known as the high velocity system. Two outer holes, one of which was previously known, are identified with recently found spurs of low-frequency radio emission. We present J, H and K-band spectroscopy of Cygnus A, spanning 1.0-2.4 micron in the rest-frame and hence several rovibrational H2, H recombination and [FeII] emission lines. The lines are spatially extended by up to 6kpc from the nucleus, but their distinct kinematics indicate that the three groups (H, H2 and [FeII]) are not wholly produced in the same gas. The broadest line, [FeII]1.644, exhibits a non-gaussian profile with a broad base (FWHM=1040 km/s), perhaps due to interaction with the radio source. Extinctions to the line-emitting regions substantially exceed earlier measurements based on optical H recombination lines. Hard X-rays from the quasar nucleus are likely to dominate the excitation of the H2 emission. The results of Maloney, Hollenbach and Tielens (1996) are thus used to infer the total mass of gas in H2 v=1-0 S(1)-emitting clouds as a function of radius, for gas densities of 10^3 and 10^5 cm^-3, and stopping column densities N_H=10^22-10^24 cm^-2. Assuming azimuthal symmetry, at least 2.3E8 Msun of such material is present within 5kpc of the nucleus, if the line-emitting clouds see an unobscured quasar spectrum. Alternatively, if the bulk of the X-ray absorption to the nucleus inferred by Ueno et al. (1994) arises in a circumnuclear torus, the implied gas mass rises to 10^10 Msun. The latter plausibly accounts for 10^9 yr of mass deposition from the cluster cooling flow, for which Mdot \simeq 10 Msun/yr within this radius., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures; to appear in MNRAS

We present observations of a sample of optically-faint, hard X-ray sources of the kind likely to be responsible for much of the hard X-ray background. We confirm that such sources are easily detected in the near-infrared, and find that they have a featureless continuum suggesting that the active nucleus is heavily obscured. The infrared colours of the majority of the targets observed are consistent with absorbed elliptical host galaxies at z=1-2. It is likely that we are observing some of the brighter members of the important new class of X-ray Type II quasars., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. 15 pages, 10 figures (2 of which are included as separate files)

The powerful combination of the Chandra X-ray telescope, the SCUBA submillimetre-wave camera and the gravitational lensing effect of the massive galaxy clusters A2390 and A1835 has been used to place stringent X-ray flux limits on six faint submillimetre SCUBA sources and deep submillimetre limits on three Chandra sources which lie in fields common to both instruments. One further source is marginally detected in both the X-ray and submillimetre bands. For all the SCUBA sources our results are consistent with starburst-dominated emission. For two objects, including SMMJ14011+0252 at z=2.55, the constraints are strong enough that they can only host powerful active galactic nuclei if they are both Compton-thick and any scattered X-ray flux is weak or itself absorbed. The lensing amplification for the sources is in the range 1.5-7, assuming that they lie at z>1. The brightest detected X-ray source has a faint extended optical counterpart (I~22) with colours consistent with a galaxy at z~1. The X-ray spectrum of this galaxy is hard, implying strong intrinsic absorption with a column density of about 1e23 cm-2 and an intrinsic (unabsorbed) 2-10 keV luminosity of 3e44 erg/s. This source is therefore a Type-II quasar. We present a detailed analysis of the X-ray properties of the cooling flows in a sample of nearby, X-ray bright clusters of galaxies using high-quality ASCA spectra and ROSAT X-ray images. We demonstrate the need for multiphase models to consistently explain the spectral and imaging X-ray data for the clusters. The mass deposition rates of the cooling flows, independently determined from the ASCA spectra and ROSAT images, exhibit reasonable agreement. We confirm the presence of intrinsic X-ray absorption in the clusters using a variety of spectral models. We also report detections of extended $100\mu$m infrared emission, spatially coincident with the cooling flows, in several of the systems studied. The observed infrared fluxes and flux limits are in good agreement with the predicted values due to reprocessed X-ray emission from the cooling flows. We present precise measurements of the abundances of iron, magnesium, silicon and sulphur in the central regions of the Virgo and Centaurus clusters. Our results firmly favour models in which a high mass fraction (70-80 per cent) of the iron in the X-ray gas in these regions is due to Type Ia supernovae. Finally, we present a series of methods which may be used to measure the ages of cooling flows from the X-ray data. The results for the present sample of clusters indicate ages of between 2.5 and 7 Gyr. If the ages of cooling flows are primarily set by subcluster merger events, then our results suggest that in the largest clusters, mergers with subclusters with masses of approximately 30 per cent of the final cluster mass are likely to disrupt cooling flows., Comment: Final version. This is the first part of a study of the detailed X-ray properties of the cores of nearby clusters. We have used the flux-limited sample of 55 clusters of Edge et al. (1990) and archival and proprietary data from the {\it ROSAT} observatory. In this paper an X-ray spatial analysis based on the surface-brightness-deprojection technique is applied to the clusters in the sample with the aim of studying their cooling flow properties. We determine the fraction of cooling flows in this sample to be 70-90 percent and estimate the contribution of the flow region to the cluster X-ray luminosity. We show that the luminosity within a strong cooling flow can account for up to 70 percent of a cluster X-ray bolometric luminosity. Our analysis indicates that about 40 percent of the clusters in the sample have flows depositing more than 100 \Msunpyr throughout the cooling region and that these possibly have been undisturbed for many Gyr, confirming that cooling flows are the natural state of cluster cores. New cooling flows in the sample are presented and previously ambiguous ones are clarified. We have constructed a catalogue of some intracluster medium properties for the clusters in this sample. The profiles of the mass deposited from cooling flows are analyzed and evidence presented for the existence of breaks in some of the profiles. Comparison is made to recent optical and radio data. We cross-correlate our sample with the Green Bank, NVSS and FIRST surveys and to the volume-limited sample of brightest cluster galaxies presented by Lauer and Postman (1994). Although weak trends exist, no strong correlation between optical magnitude or radio power of the brightest cluster galaxy and the strength of the flow is found., Comment: 20 pages with figures included.
