1. Hydraulic fracturing experiments at 1500 m depth in a deep mine: Highlights from the kISMET project

Abstract

In support of the U.S. DOE SubTER Crosscut initiative, we established a field test facility in a deep mine and designed and carried outin situ hydraulic fracturing experiments relevant to enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) in crystalline rock to characterize the stressfield, understand the effects of rock fabric on fracturing, and gain experience in monitoring using geophysical methods. The project alsoincluded pre- and post-fracturing simulation and analysis, and laboratory measurements and experiments. The kISMET (permeability(k) and Induced Seismicity Management for Energy Technologies) site was established in the West Access Drift of the SanfordUnderground Research Facility (SURF) 4757 ft (1450 m) below ground (on the 4850 ft level (4850L)) in phyllite of the PrecambrianPoorman Formation. We drilled and continuously cored five near-vertical boreholes in a line on 3 m (10 ft) spacing, deviating the twooutermost boreholes slightly to create a five-spot pattern around the test borehole centered in the test volume 40 m below the drift invert(floor) at a total depth of ~1490 m (4890 ft). Laboratory measurements of core from the center test borehole showed P-wave velocityheterogeneity along each core indicating strong, fine-scale (~1 cm or smaller) changes in the mechanical properties of the rock. Fieldmeasurements of the stress field by hydraulic fracturing showed that the minimum horizontal stress at the kISMET site averages 21.7MPa (3146 psi) trending approximately N-S (356 degrees azimuth) and plunging slightly NNW at 12°. The vertical and horizontalmaximum stresses are similar in magnitude at 42-44 MPa (6090-6380 psi) for the depths of testing, which averaged approximately 1530m (5030 ft). Hydraulic fractures were remarkably uniform suggesting core-scale and larger rock fabric did not play a role in controllingfracture orientation. Analytical solutions suggest that the fracture radius of the large fracture (stimulation test) was more than 6 m (20ft), depending on the unknown amount of leak-off.

4. Modelling the light curves of Fermi LAT millisecond pulsars

Abstract

We modelled the radio and gamma-ray light curves of millisecond pulsars using outer gap, two-pole caustic, low-altitude slot gap, and pair-starved polar cap geometric models, combined with a semi-empirical conal radio model. We find that no model fits all cases, with the outer gap and two-pole caustic models providing best fits for comparable numbers of millisecond pulsar light curves. We find a broad distribution of best-fit inclination angles as well as a clustering at large observer angles. The outer gap model furthermore seems to require relatively larger inclination angles, while the two-pole caustic model hints at an inverse trend between inclination angle and pulsar spin-down luminosity., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present the third Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) source catalog (3FGL) of sources in the 100 MeV-300 GeV range. Based on the first 4 yr of science data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope mission, it is the deepest yet in this energy range. Relative to the Second Fermi LAT catalog, the 3FGL catalog incorporates twice as much data, as well as a number of analysis improvements, including improved calibrations at the event reconstruction level, an updated model for Galactic diffuse γ-ray emission, a refined procedure for source detection, and improved methods for associating LAT sources with potential counterparts at other wavelengths. The 3FGL catalog includes 3033 sources above significance, with source location regions, spectral properties, and monthly light curves for each. Of these, 78 are flagged as potentially being due to imperfections in the model for Galactic diffuse emission. Twenty-five sources are modeled explicitly as spatially extended, and overall 238 sources are considered as identified based on angular extent or correlated variability (periodic or otherwise) observed at other wavelengths. For 1010 sources we have not found plausible counterparts at other wavelengths. More than 1100 of the identified or associated sources are active galaxies of the blazar class; several other classes of non-blazar active galaxies are also represented in the 3FGL. Pulsars represent the largest Galactic source class. From source counts of Galactic sources we estimate that the contribution of unresolved sources to the Galactic diffuse emission is ∼3% at 1 GeV.

Abstract

Isoprene (C5H8, 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) is a volatile organic compound (VOC) and is one of the primary contributors to annual global VOC emissions. Isoprene is produced primarily by vegetation as well as anthropogenic sources, and its OH- and O3-initiated oxidations are a major source of atmospheric oxygenated organics. Few quantitative infrared studies have been reported for isoprene, limiting the ability to quantify isoprene emissions via remote or in situ infrared detection. We thus report absorption cross sections and integrated band intensities for isoprene in the 600-6500 cmg'1 region. The pressure-broadened (1 atmosphere N2) spectra were recorded at 278, 298, and 323 K in a 19.94 cm path-length cell at 0.112 cmg'1 resolution, using a Bruker IFS 66v/S Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. Composite spectra are derived from a minimum of seven isoprene sample pressures, each at one of three temperatures, and the number densities are normalized to 296 K and 1 atm.

Abstract

A review of methodologies to measure the bipolar charge distribution of nanoparticles is completed, including their advantages/disadvantages and sequential development. This summary also provides context for a new development, which uses an Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (AAC) and Differential Mobility Analyzer (DMA) in tandem for a similar purpose. It is demonstrated that the tandem AAC-DMA system overcomes some significant limitations of the previous methodologies, such as multiply-charged particle artefacts and low measurement signals. The tandem AAC-DMA methodology also has the sensitivity to detect other charging phenomena, such as the effects of different sample flow rates through the charger, free-ions downstream of the charger, the inlet insert on the 85Kr charger and different particle chargers (x-ray, old 85Kr and new 85Kr). The charge fractions of the particles at low-flow (0.6 L/min) through the new $^{85}$Kr charger agreed well (average absolute difference of 0.007) with widely-used charging theory. However, significant deviations from theory (up to a 0.044 difference in charge fraction) were found with a higher-sample flow rate (1.2 L/min), with different exposure times to free-ions downstream of the charger, or with the inlet insert on the new $^{85}$Kr charger. It was found that regardless of flow rate, a soft x-ray charger resulted in charge fractions which deviated significantly from theory (up to a 0.084 difference in charge fraction), producing higher fractions of positively charged particles and lower fractions of negatively charged particles relative to theory. All of these deviations are likely due to the simplifying assumptions made by the charging theory. Therefore, rigorous measurement of particle charge distributions are necessary for accurate aerosol characterization, such as standard SMPS measurements.

Abstract

Using an Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (AAC) upstream of a particle detector is a relatively new method for measuring the aerodynamic size distribution of an aerosol. This approach overcomes limitations of previous methodologies by leveraging the high transmission efficiency, independence from particle charging, and adjustable classification range and resolution of the AAC. However, the AAC setpoint must be stepped and stabilized before each measurement, which forces trade-offs between measurement time and step resolution. This study is the first to develop and validate theory which allows the speed of the AAC classifier to be continuously varied (following an exponential function), rather than stepped. This approach reduces measurement time, while increasing the resolution of the measured distribution. Assuming uniform axial flow, the transfer function of the scanning AAC and its inversion is determined. Limited trajectory theory is used to derive the idealized transfer function of the scanning AAC, while parameterized, particle streamline theory is used to develop the non-idealized transfer function, which accounts for non-idealized particle and flow behaviours within the classifier. This theory and the practical implementation of the scanning AAC are validated by the high agreement of its measurements of polystyrene latex (PSL) particles (within 8.7% for six sizes between 100 nm to 2.02 μm), and of size distributions of three aerosol sources (Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) sebacate, NaCl and soot) to those measured by the stepping AAC (within 2% or better if the source stability is considered). Abstract

The Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (AAC) and Differential Mobility Analyzer (DMA) are aerosol classifiers commonly used to generate a monodispersed aerosol by selecting particles within a narrow range of relaxation times or electrical mobilities, respectively. However, generating an aerosol of homogeneous particles, which has narrow ranges of particle mass, mobility and relaxation time simultaneously, with either of these methods is challenging. Particles classified by the DMA are often not homogeneous (or monodispersed) due to multiply-charged particles. While the AAC overcomes this challenge for spherical particles, homogeneity is not achieved with non-spherical particles due to their effective density varying with particle size. This study demonstrates using an AAC and DMA in tandem to generate an aerosol of homogeneous, non-spherical particles. This approach is validated using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and electrical mobility measurements of the tandem-classified particles to highlight their homogeneity. To limit the effects of multiple charging during DMA classification, only a subset of DMA and AAC setpoints are permitted. While this subset is not representative of “average” non-spherical particles from the same aerosol source, this subset of low-density particles deviates the most from spherical morphology, and thus, provide insights into the upper bound of other particle properties, such as charging. Using this approach to select homogeneous particles, the bipolar charge distribution of low-density soot aggregates is then measured using another DMA. This AAC-DMA-DMA approach is demonstrated to measure up to 17 individual charge states (i.e. −8 to +8) after neutralization (with 85Kr) of size-resolved, soot aggregates with mobility diameters between 80 and 433 nm. The low-density soot aggregates obtain higher charges than predicted by theory, which overestimates the uncharged fraction (by 0.042–0.069) and, to a lesser extent, the single charge fractions (by up to 0.037) of the low-density soot aggregates, while underestimating their proportion of multiple charging (by up to 0.135 cumulatively at one particle size or up to 0.039 at one multiple charge state and size). These charging discrepancies represent an upper bound of the bipolar charging of average aggregates from the same source of flame soot.

11. Turbulent transport stabilization by ICRH minority fast ions in low rotating JET ILW L-mode plasmas

Abstract

The first experimental demonstration that fast ion induced stabilization of thermal turbulent transport takes place also at low values of plasma toroidal rotation has been obtained in JET ILW (ITER-like wall) L-mode plasmas with high (3He)-D ICRH (ion cyclotron resonance heating) power. A reduction of the gyro-Bohm normalized ion heat flux and higher values of the normalized ion temperature gradient have been observed at high ICRH power and low NBI (neutral beam injection) power and plasma rotation. Gyrokinetic simulations indicate that ITG (ion temperature gradient) turbulence stabilization induced by the presence of high-energetic 3He ions is the key mechanism in order to explain the experimental observations. Two main mechanisms have been identified to be responsible for the turbulence stabilization: a linear electrostatic wave-fast particle resonance mechanism and a nonlinear electromagnetic mechanism. Abstract

Gamma-ray binaries are stellar systems for which the spectral energy distribution (discounting the thermal stellar emission) peaks at high energies. Detected from radio to TeV gamma rays, the gamma-ray binary LS I + 61 degrees 303 is highly variable across all frequencies. One aspect of this system's variability is the modulation of its emission with the timescale set by the similar to 26.4960 day orbital period. Here we show that, during the time of our observations, the gamma-ray emission of LS I + 61 degrees 303 also presents a sinusoidal variability consistent with the previously known superorbital period of 1667 days. This modulation is more prominently seen at orbital phases around apastron, whereas it does not introduce a visible change close to periastron. It is also found in the appearance and disappearance of variability at the orbital period in the power spectrum of the data. This behavior could be explained by a quasi-cyclical evolution of the equatorial outflow of the Be companion star, whose features influence the conditions for generating gamma rays. These findings open the possibility to use gamma-ray observations to study the outflows of massive stars in eccentric binary systems.

Abstract

We modelled the radio and gamma-ray light curves of millisecond pulsars using outer gap, two-pole caustic, low-altitude slot gap, and pair-starved polar cap geometric models, combined with a semi-empirical conal radio model. We find that no model fits all cases, with the outer gap and two-pole caustic models providing best fits for comparable numbers of millisecond pulsar light curves. We find a broad distribution of best-fit inclination angles as well as a clustering at large observer angles. The outer gap model furthermore seems to require relatively larger inclination angles, while the two-pole caustic model hints at an inverse trend between inclination angle and pulsar spin-down luminosity., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Communication of a continuous improvement program in a large medical center was assessed using a formal benchmarking process with four non-health care organizations. Results indicated that continuous improvement must be integrated with the corporate strategic plan, must focus on customer satisfaction, and have active leadership support. A common framework should link different continuous improvement methodologies. Ongoing, open, multimedia two-way communication is required. Continuous improvement activities need to be integrated into all employees' daily work.

26. Discriminating bacterial spores from inert airborne particles by classification of optical scattering patterns

Abstract

Scattering patterns are made available by the TAOS (Two-dimensional Angle-resolved Optical Scattering) method, which consists of detecting micrometer-sized single airborne aerosol particles and collecting the intensity of the light they scatter from a pulsed, monochromatic laser beam. TAOS patterns have been classified by a learning machine, the training stage of which depends on many control parameters. Patterns due to single bacterial spores (Bq class) have to be discriminated from those produced by outdoor aerosol particles (Kq set) and diesel soot aggregates (sq set), where both Kq and sq are assumed not to contain patterns of bacterial origin. This work describes two directions along which classification continues to develop: the enlargement of the control parameter set and the simultaneous processing of two areas (sectors) selected from the TAOS pattern. The latter algorithm is meant to make the classifier sensitive to simmetry exhibited by some patterns. The available classification scheme is summarized, as well as the rule by which discrimination is rated off-line. Discrimination based on one pattern sector alone scores fewer than 15% false negatives (misclassified Bq patterns) and false positives from Kq and sq. Discrimination based on the symmetry of two pattern sectors fails to recognize 30% of the Bq (bacterial) patterns, whereas < 5% Kq (environmental) patterns are assigned to the Bq class; false positives from sq (diesel) patterns drop to zero. The issue of false positives is briefly discussed in relation to the fraction of airborne bacteria found in aerosols. © 2014 SPIE.

Abstract

Microquasar Spotted Microquasars are binary star systems where a normal star sheds matter onto a neutron star or a black hole, generating x-ray radiation and jets of material moving at relativistic speeds. Microquasars have proved difficult to detect in high-energy gamma rays (> 100 megaelectron volts). Using the Fermi Large Area Telescope, Abdo et al. (p. 1512 , published online 26 November; see the Perspective by Bignami ) now report the detection of variable gamma-ray emission from the microquasar Cygnus X-3. The gamma-ray flux is modulated at the orbital period of Cygnus X-3, and its variation is correlated with the radio emission originating from the microquasar's relativistic jets.

33. Genome Analysis and Phylogenetic Relatedness of Gallibacterium anatis Strains from Poultry

Abstract

Peritonitis is the major disease problem of laying hens in commercial table egg and parent stock operations. Despite its importance, the etiology and pathogenesis of this disease have not been completely clarified. Although avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) isolates have been incriminated as the causative agent of laying hen peritonitis, Gallibacterium anatis are frequently isolated from peritonitis lesions. Despite recent studies suggesting a role for G. anatis in the pathogenesis of peritonitis, little is known about the organism's virulence mechanisms, genomic composition and population dynamics. Here, we compared the genome sequences of three G. anatis isolates in an effort to understand its virulence mechanisms and identify novel antigenic traits. A multilocus sequence typing method was also established for G. anatis and used to characterize the genotypic relatedness of 71 isolates from commercial laying hens in Iowa and 18 international reference isolates. Genomic comparisons suggest that G. anatis is a highly diverse bacterial species, with some strains possessing previously described and potential virulence factors, but with a core genome containing several antigenic candidates. Multilocus sequence typing effectively distinguished 82 sequence types and several clonal complexes of G. anatis, and some clones seemed to predominate among G. anatis populations from commercial layers in Iowa. Biofilm formation and resistance to antimicrobial agents was also observed in several clades. Overall, the genomic diversity of G. anatis suggests that multiple lineages exist with differing pathogenic potential towards birds.

Abstract

In most cases, Escherichia coli exists as a harmless commensal organism, but it may on occasion cause intestinal and/or extraintestinal disease. Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) is the predominant cause of E. coli-mediated diarrhea in the developing world and is responsible for a significant portion of pediatric deaths. In this study, we determined the complete genomic sequence of E. coli H10407, a prototypical strain of enterotoxigenic E. coli, which reproducibly elicits diarrhea in human volunteer studies. We performed genomic and phylogenetic comparisons with other E. coli strains, revealing that the chromosome is closely related to that of the nonpathogenic commensal strain E. coli HS and to those of the laboratory strains E. coli K-12 and C. Furthermore, these analyses demonstrated that there were no chromosomally encoded factors unique to any sequenced ETEC strains. Comparison of the E. coli H10407 plasmids with those from several ETEC strains revealed that the plasmids had a mosaic structure but that several loci were conserved among ETEC strains. 41. Depression predicts repeated heart failure hospitalizations.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Management of depression, if it is independently associated with repeated hospitalizations for heart failure (HF), offers promise as a viable and cost-effective strategy to improve health outcomes and reduce health care costs for HF. The objective of this study was to assess the association between depression and the number of HF-related hospitalizations in patients with low-to-moderate systolic or diastolic dysfunction, after controlling for illness severity, socioeconomic factors, physician adherence to evidence-based medications, patient adherence to HF drug therapy, and patient adherence to salt restrictions. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Heart Failure Adherence and Retention Trial (HART) was a randomized behavioral trial to evaluate whether patient self-management skills coupled with HF education improved patient outcomes. Depression was measured at baseline with the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). The number of hospitalizations was analyzed with a negative binomial regression model that included an offset term to account for the differential duration of follow-up for individual subjects. The average unadjusted number of hospitalizations per year was 0.40 in the depressed group (GDS >=10) and 0.33 in the nondepressed group (GDS <10). Depression was a strong predictor (incident rate ratio 1.45; P = .006) after adjusting for physician adherence to evidence-based medication use, patient adherence to HF drug therapy, patient adherence to salt restriction, illness severity, HF severity (6-minute walk <620 feet), and socioeconomic factors. CONCLUSIONS: Depression is a strong psychosocial predictor of repeated hospitalizations for HF. Compared with nondepressed individuals, those with depression were hospitalized for HF 1.45 times more often, even after controlling for physician adherence to evidence-based medications and patient adherence to HF drug therapy and salt restrictions. 42. Mediators of the relationship between religiousness/spirituality and alcohol problems in an adult community sample.

Abstract

Johnson et al. (2008b) reported that, in a college student sample, the effect of religiousness on alcohol use was mediated by negative beliefs about alcohol, social influences, and spiritual well-being, and that these variables in turn impacted alcohol use and problems both directly and indirectly via motives for drinking. This study attempted to replicate those findings in a sample of community dwelling adults (N=211). The effect of Religious/Spiritual Involvement was mediated by Negative Beliefs about Alcohol, Social Modeling, and Spiritual-Well-Being. However, Social Modeling had stronger relationships with motives for drinking and alcohol consumption than the other two mediators. The effect of Religious Struggle on Alcohol Problems was mediated by Spiritual Well-Being and coping motives for drinking. Results provide further support for the motivational model of alcohol use and suggest plausible mechanisms by which religiousness could causally impact alcohol use and problems. Abstract

Aim. This paper is a report of a study to encourage participants to work together to identify strategies for increasing user participation in clinical decisions and to evaluate the value of co-operative inquiry as a vehicle for supporting learning in practice. Background. Service user participation in the clinical practice decisions of mental health nurses is considered essential for good practice. Methods need to be found which enable opportunities for shared learning, facilitate practice development and empower service users. Method. A co-operative inquiry design engaged all participants (n = 17) as co-researchers and involved repeated cycles of action and reflection, using multiple data collection methods. The research was conducted over a two year period in 2004-2005, with mental health nursing students collaborating with service users. Findings. Factors inhibiting participation included stigmatizing and paternalistic approaches, where clinical judgments were made solely on the basis of diagnosis. Enhancing factors were a respectful culture which recognized users' 'expertise' and communicated belief in individual potential. Inquiry benefits included insight into service users' perspectives, enhanced confidence in decision-making, appreciation of power issues in helping relationships and deconstruction of decision-making within a safe learning environment. Conclusion. Learning from novel approaches which enable nursing students to develop their reflective and reflexive ability is essential to avoid practice which disempowers and potentially harms service users' recovery. 45. The effects of cost-shifting in the State Children's Health Insurance Program.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Many states are increasing the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) cost-sharing requirements to induce reductions in enrollment. We examined the effect of increasing SCHIP premiums on both health care use and cost to the public. METHODS: The net cost to the public of increased cost sharing for SCHIP-insured children in a border community was estimated with multivariate methods. The majority (88%) of children were of Mexican origin. RESULTS: We estimated that a $10 increase in monthly premiums would induce 10% of SCHIP children to disenroll, resulting in a 6% increase in public expenditures. CONCLUSIONS: Families that disenroll from SCHIP and become uninsured typically turn to emergency departments for primary care, which increases total health care expenditures through the use of more expensive services. Abstract

Two 9-day trials to study effects of dietary mycotoxins were conducted using 6-week-old mallards. Each trial involved three groups of six ducks each, three males and three females per group. One group was fed no myocotoxin (control), one was fed aflatoxin, and the third was fed T-2 toxin. Dietary aflatoxin was 12 ppb in trial 1 and 33 ppb in trial 2; dietary T-2 toxin was 2 ppm in both trials. There were no gross or microscopic lesions in controls or in ducks fed aflatoxin, nor did these groups differ significantly in final body weight or in weights of spleen or bursa of Fabricius. Ducks exposed to T-2 toxin had erosions and/or ulcerations in the oral cavity and esophagus; further, these ducks exhibited a decrease in weights of body, thymus, spleen, and bursa of Fabricius. The only microscopic change seen in lymphoid organs of ducks exposed to T-2 toxin was a moderate decrease of thymic cortical lymphocytes.

50. Esomeprazole: a clinical review.

Abstract

The pharmacology, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, clinical efficacy, and adverse effects of esomeprazole are reviewed. Esomeprazole, a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI), is the S-isomer of omeprazole. Esomeprazole has FDA-approved labeling for use in the treatment of symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), including healing and maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis and as part of a triple-drug regimen for Helicobocter pylori infection. Esomeprazole is structurally similar to other PPIs but is the first PPI to include only the active isomer, which may lead to improved pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics. Esomeprazole maintains intragastric pH at a higher level and above 4 for a longer period than other PPIs. Clinical studies have shown that esomeprazole is at least equivalent in safety and efficacy to other drugs in the class. Esomeprazole has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of erosive esophagitis, the maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis, and the treatment of signs and symptoms of GERD. Effective dosages are 20 or 40 mg orally every day or as needed. Esomeprazole magnesium 40 mg once daily in combination with amoxicillin and clarithromycin is effective in eradicating H. pylori infection. The potential for interacting with other drugs is limited and is similar to that of omeprazole. The most common adverse effects are headache, respiratory infection, and abdominal symptoms. Esomeprazole has pharmacokinetic properties that may make it more effective than omeprazole in some patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
