This study examines residents’ perceptions of having a medical education specialist shadow and evaluate their nonmedical knowledge skills.Methods: Medical education specialists shadowed postgraduate year 1 and postgraduate year 2 EM residents during an ED shift once per academic year. In an attempt to increase meaningful feedback to the residents, these specialists evaluated resident performance in selected non-medical knowledge-based Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) sub-competencies and provided residents with direct, real-time feedback, followed by a written evaluation sent via email. Evaluations provided specific references to examples of behaviors observed during the shift and connected these back to ACGME competencies and milestones.Results: Twelve residents participated in this shadow experience (six post graduate year 1 and six postgraduate year 2). Two residents emailed the medical education specialists ahead of the scheduled shadow shift requesting specific feedback. When queried, five residents voluntarily requested their feedback to be included in their formal biannual review. Residents received milestone scores and narrative feedback on the non-medical knowledge-based ACGME sub-competencies and indicated the shadow experience and subsequent feedback were valuable.Conclusion: Medical education specialists who observe residents over the course of an entire shift and evaluate non-medical knowledge-based skills are perceived by EM residents to provide meaningful feedback and add valuable information for the biannual review process. Standardized “plain” cigarette packaging is advocated as a public health policy to prevent and reduce morbidity and mortality caused by smoking by reducing youth smoking initiation and promoting cessation among smokers. Plain packaging was implemented in Australia in December 2012, and several other countries are considering doing so, but each faces foreseeable legal resistance from opponents to such measures. Tobacco companies have challenged these public health policies, citing international trade agreements and intellectual property laws. Decision-making in these court cases will hinge in part on whether the evidence indicates the public health benefits of plain packaging outweigh any potential harm to tobacco manufacturers’ interests. We reviewed the available evidence in support of plain packaging, finding evidence from observational, experimental, and population-based studies. Results indicate that plain packaging can reduce positive perceptions of smoking and dissuade tobacco use. Governments deciding to implement plain cigarette packaging measures can rely on this evidence to help make a strong case that plain packaging plays an important role in the context of comprehensive smoking prevention efforts. Background: Cytotoxic WBC antibodies are found in patients who have refractoriness to platelet transfusion (RPT) or are experiencing febrile transfusion reactions (FTRs) and in sera giving so called nonspecific hemagglutination by IAT (N/S IAT). Sera from such patients were screened for WBC antibodies regardless of the ability to fix complement using a flow cytometric (FC) lymphocyte indirect immunofluorescence test (LIFT) to compare FC-LIFT with a routine lymphocytotoxicity test (LCT) for WBC antibody detection.Study Design and Methods: Serum from 104 patients with RPT, 87 with FTR, and 147 with N/S IAT were tested in parallel by using FC-LIFT and LCT. Sera giving discrepant results were re-tested with an HLA class I antibody ELISA to assess whether they were HLA-specific.Results: Of the sera tested, 175 were LIFT positive, and 146 were LCT positive. Fifty-five had antibodies that were detectable only by LIFT; 26 were positive only by LCT. Of these 81 discrepant sera, 30 of 63 were positive in HLA ELISA.Conclusion: FC-LIFT detects more WBC antibodies than does LCT or ELISA, and it is a superior screening technique. Because some cytotoxic antibodies are detectable only by LCT, comprehensive WBC antibody screening would require the application of both techniques. The speech of twenty normally developing children whose linguistic development spanned four MLU stages was recorded. The weak syllable productions in their spontaneous and elicited words and phrases were examined. The children demonstrated more frequent use of weak syllables that occurred in trochaic (strong + weak) than iambic (weak + strong) patterns. The constraint on iambs was not absolute; even children in MLU Stage I produced weak syllables in iambs occasionally. Also, it was not a constraint on lexical representations as the same pattern was evinced for word combinations. Weakly stressed articles were omitted significantly more often from noun phrases that were iambic than from those that were trochaic. These data suggest that a pattern of the form strong syllable + optional weak syllable [S(W)] serves as a template for multisyllabic productions, whether mono- or multimorphemic. With increasing MLU, S(W) template use declined and control of timing distinctions between weak and strong syllables became more adult-like. We conclude that the trochee may function as either an optimal representational unit or as an optimal timing unit for early syllable sequences. Elevated urinary albumin excretion in patients with type 1 diabetes reverts to normoalbuminuria in a majority of patients but advances toward proteinuria in some. In order to gain valuable insights into the early pathophysiology of diabetic nephropathy we evaluated the association of kidney tubular injury biomarkers with changes in albuminuria in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Urine levels of kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), and some inflammatory markers were determined in 38 healthy individuals and 659 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus having varying degrees of albuminuria. Urinary interleukin-6, CXCL10/IP-10, NAG, and KIM-1 levels were very low in healthy individuals, increased in type 1 patients with normoalbuminuria, and were highest in diabetic patients that had microalbuminuria. Low baseline concentrations of urinary KIM-1 and NAG both individually and collectively were significantly associated with the regression of microalbuminuria over the subsequent 2 years; an effect independent of clinical characteristics. Progression and regression of microalbuminuria were unrelated to urinary levels of interleukins 6 and 8, CXCL10/IP-10, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1. Thus our results show that lower urinary KIM-1 and NAG levels were associated with the regression of microalbuminuria in type 1 diabetes mellitus. Confinement of monolayers into quasi-1D atomically thin nanoribbons could lead to novel quantum phenomena beyond those achieved in their bulk and monolayer counterparts. However, current experimental availability of nanoribbon species beyond graphene is limited to bottom-up synthesis or lithographic patterning. In this study, a versatile and direct approach is introduced to exfoliate bulk van der Waals crystals as nanoribbons. Akin to the Scotch tape exfoliation method for producing monolayers, this technique provides convenient access to a wide range of nanoribbons derived from their corresponding bulk crystals, including MoS 2 , WS 2 , MoSe 2 , WSe 2 , MoTe 2 , WTe 2 , ReS 2 , and hBN. The nanoribbons are predominantly monolayer, single-crystalline, parallel-aligned, flat, and exhibit high aspect ratios. The role of confinement, strain, and edge configuration of these nanoribbons is observed in their electrical, magnetic, and optical properties. Introduction: Widespread misperceptions about nicotine may have unintended effects on public health. We examined associations between existing messages about nicotine or tobacco and beliefs about nicotine and reduced nicotine cigarettes (RNC)., Methods: 2962 U.S. 18-45-year-olds were randomized in a May 2022 web-based survey to view one of 26 text-based messages about tobacco or nicotine from three sources: ongoing research (n = 8), messages authorized by FDA for VLN cigarettes (n = 6), and FDA's "From Plant to Product to Puff" campaign (n = 12); six messages from FDA's campaign did not reference nicotine and were treated as the reference source. Analyses examined associations between messages, grouped by source and individually, with beliefs about nicotine and RNC addictiveness and harms., Results: Relative to FDA messages that did not reference nicotine, all message sources were associated with greater odds of a correct belief about nicotine (Odds Ratios [ORs] = 1.40-1.87, p's < 0.01); VLN messages were associated with greater correct beliefs about RNC addictiveness (b = 0.23, p < .05). No campaign produced greater correct beliefs about RNC harms. At the individual level, only five messages were associated with a correct belief about nicotine (ORs = 2.12-2.56, p-values < .01), and one with correct beliefs about RNC harms (b = 1.09, p < .05), vs. the reference message., Conclusions: Few existing messages improved understanding of the risks of nicotine separately from the risks of combustible products. The peptide presentation by donor and recipient major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules is the major driver of T-cell responses in transplantation. In this review, we address an emerging area of interest, the application of immunopeptidome in transplantation, and describe the potential opportunities that exist to use peptides for targeting alloreactive T cells. The immunopeptidome, the set of peptides presented on an individual's MHC, plays a key role in immune surveillance. In transplantation, the immunopeptidome is heavily influenced by MHC-derived peptides, delineating a key subset of the diverse peptide repertoire implicated in alloreactivity. Evidence for seed transmission of phytoplasmas has grown in several pathosystems including coconut (Cocos nucifera). Bogia coconut syndrome (BCS) is a disease associated with the lethal yellowing syndrome associated with the presence of 'Candidatus Phytoplasma noviguineense' that affects coconut, betel nut (Areca catechu) and bananas (Musa spp.) in Papua New Guinea. Coconut and betel nut drupes were sampled from BCS-infected areas in Papua New Guinea, dissected, the extracted nucleic acid was used in polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) used to check for presence of phytoplasma DNA. In a second study, drupes of both plant species were collected from multiple field sites and grown in insect-proof cages. Leaf samples taken at 6 months were also tested with PCR and LAMP. The studies of dissected coconut drupes detected phytoplasma DNA in several tissues including the embryo. Drupes from betel nut tested negative. Among the seedlings, evidence of possible seed transmission was found in both plant species. The results demonstrate the presence of 'Ca. Water treatment works have previously shown high efficiency in removing microplastics > 25 µm from raw source water. However, what is less well known is the extent to which microplastics of this size class are generated or lost within the water distribution network, particularly whether there is a greater presence in the customer tap than in the water treatment works outlet. This study focused on the presence of 21 different types of synthetic polymer particles with sizes larger than 25 µm examined through multiple rounds of sampling at outlets of water treatment works (WTW), service reservoirs (SR), and customer taps (CT) managed by seven different water companies in Britain. Nineteen different types of polymers were detected; their signature and concentration varied based on the round of sampling, the location within the water supply network, and the water company responsible for managing the supply. Among the polymers examined, polyamide (PA), polyethene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) were the most commonly found. Apart from PET having its highest concentration of 0.0189 microplastic per litre (MP/L) in the SR, the concentrations of the other three most frequent polymers (PS = 0.017 MP/L, PA = 0.0752 MP/L, PP= 0.1513 MP/L) were highest in the CT. The overall prevalence of this size of microplastics in the network is low, but there was a high variability of polymer types and occurrences. These spatial and temporal variations suggested that the MP in the distribution network may exist as a series of pulses. Given the presence and polymer types, the potential for some of the microplastics to originate from materials used in the water network and domestic plumbing systems cannot be ruled out. Purpose of Review: Posterior shoulder instability is an uncommon but important cause of shoulder dysfunction and pain which may occur as the result of seizure, high energy trauma, or repetitive stress related to occupational or sport-specific activities. This current review details the imaging approach to the patient with posterior shoulder instability and describes commonly associated soft tissue and bony pathologies identified by radiographs, CT, and MR imaging., Recent Findings: Advances in MR imaging technology and techniques allow for more accurate evaluation of bone and soft tissue pathology associated with posterior shoulder instability while sparing patients exposure to radiation. Imaging can contribute significantly to the clinical management of patients with posterior shoulder instability by demonstrating the extent of associated injuries and identifying predisposing anatomic conditions. Radiologic evaluation should be guided by clinical history and physical examination, beginning with radiographs followed by CT and/or MRI for assessment of osseous and soft tissue pathology. While there has been recent attention in the scientific community on the ethical and welfare implications of different dog training methods, less research has investigated what methods and training tools United States dog guardians use, where they obtain information about dog training, and the reasons they give for their choices of method. We conducted two surveys with nearly 800 Arizona State University undergraduate students to gain a more realistic look into how dog guardians in the United States train their dogs and where they are receiving their training information. Only 5% of respondents reported utilizing a trainer when they had concerns regarding their dog's behavior; 60% would ask a friend or family member or seek advice online. Few reported taking their dog to any training classes; 70% reported either training the dog themselves or not implementing any formal training. When asked general questions, most respondents reported using rewards-based methods but, when asked about specific problem behaviors, 57% of respondents noted that they would use auditory or physical corrections. Respondents who trained with rewards-based methods reported that these methods of training were more effective significantly more frequently than those who trained with mixed methods reported that those methods were most effective (Fisher's Exact Test, p < 0.01).

Superbase-derived ionic liquids (SILs) are promising sorbents to tackle the carbon challenge featured by tunable interaction strength with CO 2 via structural engineering, particularly the oxygenate-derived counterparts (e. g., phenolate). However, for the widely deployed phenolate-derived SILs, unsolved stability issues severely limited their applications leading to unfavorable and diminished CO 2 chemisorption performance caused by ylide formation-involved side reactions and the phenolate-quinone transformation via auto-oxidation. In this work, robust pyrazolonate-derived SILs possessing anti-oxidation nature were developed by introducing aza-fused rings in the oxygenate-derived anions, which delivered promising and tunable CO 2 uptake capacity surpassing the phenolate-based SIL via a carbonate formation pathway (O-C bond formation), as illustrated by detailed spectroscopy studies. Further theoretical calculations and experimental comparisons demonstrated the more favorable reaction enthalpy and improved anti-oxidation properties of the pyrazolonate-derived SILs compared with phenolate anions. Objective: To identify preoperative MRI findings in patients with arthroscopically confirmed hypermobile lateral meniscus utilizing a standard MRI knee protocol, with comparison to normal control and lateral meniscal tear groups., Subjects and Methods: All patients with arthroscopically confirmed hypermobile lateral meniscus diagnosed at our institution were retrospectively identified. The following structures were evaluated on preoperative knee MRIs: superior and inferior popliteomeniscal fascicles, lateral meniscus and meniscocapsular junction, popliteal hiatus, and soft tissue edema around the popliteal hiatus. The same MRI features were evaluated in the normal control and lateral meniscal tear groups., Results: Study, normal control, and lateral meniscal tear patients (18 each) were included. In the study group, 94.4% had superior popliteomeniscal fascicle abnormality, 89.0% had inferior popliteomeniscal fascicle abnormality, and 72.2% had lateral meniscal abnormality. Incidence of these abnormalities was significantly higher than in the normal control group. Meniscal abnormalities in the study group all involved the posterior horn meniscocapsular junction, 12/13 of which had vertical signal abnormality at the junction and 1/13 with anterior subluxation of the entire posterior horn. Popliteus hiatus measurements were largest in the lateral meniscal tear group., Conclusion: In patients with hypermobile lateral meniscus, the combination of popliteomeniscal fascicle abnormality and vertical signal abnormality at the meniscocapsular junction was seen in the majority of patients. Popliteomeniscal fascicle signal abnormality without identifiable lateral meniscal injury was the next most common imaging appearance. The presence of pharmaceuticals in the environment, especially the aquatic environment, has received a lot of attention in the last 20 plus years. Despite that attention, the two most important questions regarding pharmaceuticals in the environment still cannot be answered. It is not possible to put the threat posed by pharmaceuticals into perspective with the many other threats (stressors) facing aquatic organisms, such as low flows due to over-abstraction of water, inhibited passage of migratory species due to dams and weirs, diseases, algal blooms causing low oxygen levels and releasing toxins, eutrophication, climate change, and so on. Nor is it possible to identify which pharmaceuticals are of concern and which are not. Not only can these key questions not be answered presently, they have received extremely little attention, despite being identified 10 years ago as the two most important questions to answer. Objective: The Food and Drug Administration has the authority to set a minimum for cigar pack size, a product feature linked to price. This study examined the effects of cigarillo package size and price on young adults' smoking and purchase intentions., Design: Young adults (n=1032) 18-30 years old who smoked cigarillos in the past 12 months completed an online 3×2 within-subjects experiment testing the effects of cigarillo pack size (1, 2, 5) and price (actual price, standardised price per stick) on intentions to purchase and smoke cigarillos. We modelled the main effects and interactions of pack size and price on intentions to buy and smoke cigarillos overall and by cigarillo use frequency., Results: Intentions to buy and smoke were strongest for lower priced singles and two packs compared with higher priced five packs. Under standardised price conditions, participants preferred larger packs, but under actual pricing conditions smaller packs, especially two packs, were preferred. Participants who smoked cigarillos less than monthly were more likely to buy and smoke the least expensive products (buy: singles actual price adjusted OR (aOR)=4.51, 95% CI 3.76 to 5.42; two packs actual price aOR=9.76, 95% CI 8.11 to 11.75; five packs standardised price aOR=3.17, 95% CI 2.89 to 3.48) with the strongest preference for two packs and singles., Conclusions: Young adult cigarillo smokers prefer smaller packs in conditions where pricing incentivises smaller packs. Minimum pack size policies may reduce the appeal of cigarillos among young adults, especially less frequent cigarillo smokers. Solid organ transplant donor-recipient eplet mismatch has been correlated with donor-specific antibody (DSA) formation, antibody-mediated rejection, and overall rejection rates. However, studies have been predominantly in patients on tacrolimus-based immunosuppression regimens and have not fully explored differences in ethnically and racially diverse populations. Evidence indicates that patients on belatacept have lower rates of DSA formation, suggesting mediation of the immunogenicity of mismatched human leukocyte antigen polymorphisms. We performed a retrospective, single-center analysis of class II eplet disparity in a cohort of kidney transplant recipients treated using belatacept with tacrolimus induction (Bela/Tac TL ) or tacrolimus regimens between 2016 and 2019. Bela/Tac TL (n = 294) and tacrolimus (n = 294) cohorts were propensity score-matched with standardized difference <0.15. Single-molecule eplet risk level was associated with immune event rates for both groups. In Cox regression analysis stratified by eplet risk level, Bela/Tac TL immunosuppression was associated with a decreased rate of DSA (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.4), antibody-mediated rejection (HR = 0.2), and rejection (HR = 0.45). In the low-risk group, cumulative graft failure was lower for patients on Bela/Tac TL (P < .02). Introduction: Chronic hypertension increases the risk of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) by ∼60%; however, how hypertension affects the vasculature of the hippocampus remains unclear but could contribute to VCI., Methods: Memory, hippocampal perfusion, and hippocampal arteriole (HA) function were investigated in male Wistar rats or spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) in early (4 to 5 months old), mid (8 to 9 months old), or late adulthood (14 to 15 months old). SHR in late adulthood were chronically treated with captopril (angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor) or apocynin (antioxidant) to investigate the mechanisms by which hypertension contributes to VCI., Results: Impaired memory in SHR in late adulthood was associated with HA endothelial dysfunction, hyperconstriction, and ∼50% reduction in hippocampal blood flow. Captopril, but not apocynin, improved HA function, restored perfusion, and rescued memory function in aged SHR., Discussion: Hippocampal vascular dysfunction contributes to hypertension-induced memory decline through angiotensin II signaling, highlighting the therapeutic potential of HAs in protecting neurocognitive health later in life., Highlights: Vascular dysfunction in the hippocampus contributes to vascular cognitive impairment. Vertically stacked van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures exhibit unique electronic, optical, and thermal properties that can be manipulated by twist-angle engineering. However, the weak phononic coupling at a bilayer interface imposes a fundamental thermal bottleneck for future two-dimensional devices. Using ultrafast electron diffraction, we directly investigated photoinduced nonequilibrium phonon dynamics in MoS 2 /WS 2 at 4° twist angle and WSe 2 /MoSe 2 heterobilayers with twist angles of 7°, 16°, and 25°. We identified an interlayer heat transfer channel with a characteristic timescale of ~20 picoseconds, about one order of magnitude faster than molecular dynamics simulations assuming initial intralayer thermalization. Atomistic calculations involving phonon-phonon scattering suggest that this process originates from the nonthermal phonon population following the initial interlayer charge transfer and scattering. Our findings present an avenue for thermal management in vdW heterostructures by tailoring nonequilibrium phonon populations.

The study of animal movement provides insights into underlying ecological processes and informs analyses of behaviour and resource use, which have implications for species management and conservation. The tools used to study animal movement have evolved over the past decades, allowing for data collection from a variety of species, including those living in remote environments. Satellite-linked radio and GPS collars have been used to study polar bear ( Ursus maritimus ) ecology and movements throughout the circumpolar Arctic for over 50 years. However, due to morphology and growth constraints, only adult female polar bears can be reliably collared. Collars have proven to be safe, but there has been opposition to their use, resulting in a deficiency in data across much of the species' range. To bolster knowledge of movement characteristics and behaviours for polar bears other than adult females, while also providing an alternative to collars, we tested the use of fur- and ear-mounted telemetry tags that can be affixed to polar bears of any sex and age. We tested three fur tag designs (SeaTrkr, tribrush and pentagon tags), which we affixed to 15 adult and 1 subadult male polar bears along the coast of Hudson Bay during August-September 2021-2022. Fur tags were compared with ear tags deployed on 42 subadult and adult male polar bears captured on the coast or the sea ice between 2016 and 2022. We used data from the tags to quantify the amount of time subadult and adult males spent resting versus traveling while on land. Our results show the three fur tag designs remained functional for shorter mean durations (SeaTrkr = 58 days; tribrush = 47 days; pentagon = 22 days) than ear tags (121 days), but positional error estimates were comparable among the Argos-equipped tags. The GPS/Iridium-equipped SeaTrkr fur tags provided higher resolution and more frequent location data. Combined, the tags provided sufficient data to model different behavioural states. Furthermore, as hypothesized, subadult and adult male polar bears spent the majority of their time resting while on land, increasing time spent traveling as temperatures cooled. There remains a persistent concern that freshwater biodiversity is in decline and being threatened by pollution. As the UK, and particularly England, is a densely populated nation with rivers of modest dilution capacity, this location is very suitable to examine how freshwater biodiversity has responded to human pressures over the past 30 years. A long-term dataset of 223,325 freshwater macroinvertebrate records from 1989 to 2018 for England was retrieved and examined. A sub-set of approximately 200 sites per English Region (1515 sites in total with 62,514 samples), with the longest and most consistent records were matched with predicted wastewater exposure, upstream land cover and terrain characteristics (latitude, altitude, slope gradient and flow discharge). To understand changes in macroinvertebrate diversity and sensitivity with respect to these parameters, the biotic indices of (i) overall family richness, (ii) Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera (EPT) family richness, and (iii) the Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) scores of NTAXA (number of scoring taxa) and (iv) ASPT (average score per taxon) were selected. A review of how close the BMWP scores come to those expected at minimally impacted reference sites was included. For all latitudes, altitudes, channel slope, river size, wastewater exposure levels, and differing proportions of upstream woodland, seminatural, arable and urban land cover, all diversity or sensitivity indices examined improved over this period, although this improvement has slowed in some cases post 2003. Mean overall family richness has increased from 15 to 25 family groups, a 66 % improvement. This study sought to understand reactions to very low nicotine (VLN) cigarette advertising compared with conventional cigarette advertising with consideration of warning labels and social media context. The online experimental study recruited young adult cigarette smokers and nonsmokers (N = 1,608). Participants completed a discrete choice task with a 2 × 2 × 3 mixed design: brand, (VLN, Marlboro), context (Ad only, Ad on social media), and warning (Text-only, Well-known risk pictorial, or Lesser-known risk pictorial). Participants made choices about attention, appeal, harm, buying, and quitting intentions. Social media context increased attention and appeal. A well-known risk pictorial warning outperformed a text-only warning. Smokers had increased odds of quit intentions for VLN ads, yet nonsmokers had increased intentions to buy cigarettes on social media with a text-only warning. Results indicate differences in how young adults react to cigarette ads on social media, especially with the warnings they portray., (© 2023. Introduction: Behavioral therapies, including cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnotherapy and stress management activities, have emerged as effective treatments for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a female predominant disorder of the brain-gut axis. IBS, affecting over 10% of the global population, typically presents with abnormal bowel habits and abdominal pain due to visceral hypersensitivity. While the mechanisms underlying how behavioral therapies treat IBS are still elusive, we had previously shown that chronic stress alters gene expression in brain regions critical for stress processing and nociception. We found that exposure to an enriched environment (EE), the rodent analogue of behavioral therapies, prior to and during the stressor was sufficient to prevent stress-induced changes in glucocorticoid receptor (GR) expression in the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) and hippocampus. Pre-exposure to EE also inhibited stress-induced increased colonic permeability and was able to block the induction of stress-induced visceral and somatic hypersensitivity. However, it remains unknown if EE can reverse chronic viscerosomatic hypersensitivity that persists following exposure to stress. We hypothesized that EE after chronic stress would be sufficient to reverse stress-induced changes in i) GR expression in the CeA and hippocampus, ii) ameliorate stress-induced colonic hyperpermeability and iii) restore normal visceral and somatic sensitivity in male and female rats., Methods: Male and female rats were exposed to daily water avoidance stress (WAS). After confirming the rats had developed visceral hypersensitivity, 50% of the animals were housed in EE for 2 weeks while the other 50% remained in standard housing (SH). At the end of this period, we assessed visceral and somatic sensitivity. We also collected colon tissue to measure colonic permeability. Micro-punches of tissue from the CeA and hippocampus were isolated to measure GR expression. Control animals not exposed to WAS were kept in SH for the duration of the study (n = 8 per group)., Results: In both male and female rats, EE reversed stress-induced visceral (p < 0.001) and somatic (p < 0.01) hypersensitivity when compared to WAS animals housed in SH to levels comparable to control animals. EE exposure also reversed changes in GR expression in both the hippocampus (p < 0.01) and CeA (p < 0.01), normalizing GR expression to control levels. Introduction: Attention is a critical outcome to understanding the impacts of tobacco warning labels and is commonly measured using eye tracking. Self-report, online methods may be efficient, scalable alternatives to capture attention. This study assesses warning label attention on cigarette marketing using a heatmapping task., Methods: Young adults (n=1,608) aged 18-30 years and registered on Mechanical Turk with a WorkerID verified in the U.S. were included. Data were collected in 2021-2022 and analyzed in 2022. Tobacco advertisement exposure included a 2 × 3 between-subjects factorial design for varying contexts and warnings. Attention was operationalized with self-reported frequency and timing of warning selection. Outcomes include credibility, willingness to use the advertised cigarettes, and intentions to use cigarettes and low-nicotine cigarettes., Results: Early and more frequent attention to the warning was associated with higher credibility (frequent: β=0.28, 95% CI=0.11, 0.44; early: β=0.14, 95% CI=0.02, 0.25), lower willingness to use the advertised cigarettes (frequent: β= -1.78, 95% CI= -2.24, -1.32; early: β= -1.16, 95% CI= -1.49, -0.84), lower cigarette use intentions in the next week (frequent: β= -0.44, 95% CI= -0.64, -0.25; early: β= -0.21, 95% CI= -0.35, -0.08), and lower low-nicotine cigarette use intentions in the next week (frequent: β= -0.47, 95% CI= -0.66, -0.28; early: β= -0.25, 95% CI= -0.38, -0.12) than no attention at all., Conclusions: Greater attention as measured by a heatmapping task was observed for pictorial warnings and associated with lower intentions to use tobacco. Introduction: Research that explores the clinical relevance of subclinical depressive symptoms and smoking is primarily focused on smoking cessation. We examine whether depression symptoms vary across an array of biological (carbon monoxide boost), behavioral (FagerströmTest of Nicotine Dependence, cigarettes per day, smoking topography), and psychological smoking-related outcomes (Questionnaire on Smoking Urges, Withdrawal Symptoms Checklist) in non-treatment-seeking smokers., Methods: Baseline data were pooled from three research trials with identical procedures designed to assess individual smoking behavior using smokers preferred cigarette brands. Depression symptom level (asymptomatic, subsyndromal, syndromal) was defined using established Center for Epidemiological Depression Scale (CES-D) cutpoint criteria. Smokers were instructed to smoke as usual for one-week. At the beginning and end of the baseline period, nicotine dependence, smoking topography, CO boost, desire to smoke, anticipation of positive reinforcement, negative affect, and withdrawal were measured., Results: Ordinary least squares linear regression models were used to test the association between depression symptom level and outcome measures adjusting for sex and education (N = 355). The results revealed no differences in topography measures, cigarettes per day and FTND. Smoking withdrawal and smoking urges were higher among both individuals with subsyndromal symptoms and syndromal depression symptoms compared to those who were asymptomatic. Anti-Stokes photoluminescence (PL) is light emission at a higher photon energy than the excitation, with applications in optical cooling, bioimaging, lasing, and quantum optics. Here, we show how plasmonic nano-cavities activate anti-Stokes PL in WSe 2 monolayers through resonant excitation of a dark exciton at room temperature. The optical near-fields of the plasmonic cavities excite the out-of-plane transition dipole of the dark exciton, leading to light emission from the bright exciton at higher energy. Through statistical measurements on hundreds of plasmonic cavities, we show that coupling to the dark exciton leads to a near hundred-fold enhancement of the upconverted PL intensity. This is further corroborated by experiments in which the laser excitation wavelength is tuned across the dark exciton. We show that a precise nanoparticle geometry is key for a consistent enhancement, with decahedral nanoparticle shapes providing an efficient PL upconversion. Finally, we demonstrate a selective and reversible switching of the upconverted PL via electrochemical gating. Research suggests consumers may misunderstand modified risk tobacco product (MRTP) claims. We examined the effects of nicotine content across four tobacco products with and without MRTP claims among a racially and ethnically diverse sample of adults who do and do not smoke. Adults ( n = 1484) aged 21-65 completed an online experiment using a 2 × 2 × 4 mixed factorial design to examine the effects of tobacco product (Classic White Snus, IQOS, JUUL e-cigarette, and VLN cigarette) and nicotine content (high vs. low) stratified by MRTP claim (present vs. absent) across four outcomes: (1) likely to try (2) serious disease if used regularly, (3) least addictive, and (4) ease of quitting smoking. Not including an MRTP claim resulted in an increased likelihood of trying a product, decreased concern of serious disease, lower perceived addictiveness, and increased ease of quitting smoking. Participants selected low nicotine IQOS without a claim as the least likely to cause serious disease. Low nicotine JUUL, without a claim, was selected as least addictive and most likely to facilitate quitting. Intentions to try were highest for low nicotine JUUL. Participants selected low-nicotine products as less addictive than high nicotine products. Regulatory efforts should consider how MRTP claims interact with different product characteristics. Subtle differences exist across outcomes between racial and ethnic groups, which indicates that further research is warranted.

Introduction: Heated tobacco products, including Marlboro IQOS, are available globally. In the USA, IQOS was authorised to be advertised with claims about reduced toxicant exposure relative to cigarettes. The effects of such modified risk claims and health warnings have not been studied among young adult cigarette smokers and non-smokers., Methods: In 2020, US young adult (18-30 years, n=1328) cigarette smokers and non-smokers viewed an IQOS ad in a 4 (modified risk claim variations or none) by 3 (warning variations or none) between-subjects experiment. Outcome measures assessed perceived credibility and effectiveness of the health or risk message for discouraging IQOS use, perceived harms, efficacy beliefs, and IQOS use intentions., Results: Smokers reported significantly higher (p<0.05) perceived credibility, lower perceived effectiveness, higher efficacy beliefs about switching to IQOS and higher intentions to use IQOS than non-smokers. Among smokers, health warnings increased perceived credibility (p<0.001) and effectiveness (p<0.05), but claims did not affect outcomes examined. Among non-smokers, warnings and claims increased perceived credibility, and warnings increased perceived effectiveness (p<0.003). The reduced exposure claim increased non-smokers' intentions to use IQOS (b=0.40, 95% CI 0.07 to 0.73)., Conclusions: Among young adult smokers, health warnings increased perceived effectiveness at discouraging IQOS use and perceived credibility. Among non-smokers, warnings and claims increased perceived credibility and warnings increased perceived effectiveness, but the Food and Drug Administration-authorised reduced exposure claim increased intentions to use IQOS. Background: There is a paucity of research on the management of partial-thickness tears of the distal bicep tendon, and even less is known about the long-term outcomes of this condition., Purpose: To identify patients with partial-thickness distal bicep tendon tears and determine (1) patient characteristics and treatment strategies, (2) long-term outcomes, and (3) any identifiable risk factors for progression to surgery or complete tear., Study Design: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3., Methods: A fellowship-trained musculoskeletal radiologist identified patients diagnosed with a partial-thickness distal bicep tendon tear on magnetic resonance imaging between 1996 and 2016. Medical records were reviewed to confirm the diagnosis and record study details. Multivariate logistic regression models were created using baseline characteristics, injury details, and physical examination findings to predict operative intervention., Results: In total, 111 patients met inclusion criteria (54 treated operatively, 57 treated nonoperatively), with 53% of tears in the nondominant arm and a mean follow-up time after surgery of 9.7 ± 6.5 years. Only 5% of patients progressed to full-thickness tears during the study period, at a mean of 35 months after the initial diagnosis. Patients who were nonoperatively treated were less likely to miss time from work (12% vs 61%; P < .001) and missed fewer days (30 vs 97 days; P < .016) than those treated surgically. Multivariate regression analyses demonstrated increased risk of progression to surgery with older age at initial consult (unit odds ratio [OR], 1.1), tenderness to palpation (OR, 7.5), and supination weakness (OR, 24.8). Supination weakness at initial consult was a statistically significant predictor for surgical intervention (OR, 24.8; P = .001)., Conclusion: Clinical outcomes were favorable for patients regardless of treatment strategy. Approximately 50% of patients were treated surgically; patients with supination weakness were 24 times more likely to undergo surgery than those without. Modern agriculture has drastically changed global landscapes and introduced pressures on wildlife populations. Policy and management of agricultural systems has changed over the last 30 years, a period characterized not only by intensive agricultural practices but also by an increasing push towards sustainability. It is crucial that we understand the long-term consequences of agriculture on beneficial invertebrates and assess if policy and management approaches recently introduced are supporting their recovery. In this study, we use large citizen science datasets to derive trends in invertebrate occupancy in Great Britain between 1990 and 2019. We compare these trends between regions of no- (0%), low- (greater than 0-50%) and high-cropland (greater than 50%) cover, which includes arable and horticultural crops. Although we detect general declines, invertebrate groups are declining most strongly in high-cropland cover regions. This suggests that even in the light of improved policy and management over the last 30 years, the way we are managing cropland is failing to conserve and restore invertebrate communities. New policy-based drivers and incentives are required to support the resilience and sustainability of agricultural ecosystems. Post-Brexit changes in UK agricultural policy and reforms under the Environment Act offer opportunities to improve agricultural landscapes for the benefit of biodiversity and society.

American pet owners spend billions of dollars on food and treats so it is important to understand what products they want and what they think their dog would enjoy. This study analyzed video recordings of dogs engaging in dental chews in their home environment and compared the observed appetitive behaviors to owner preference and owner-reported dog preference. Overall, appetitive behavior differed significantly between some dental chews. Owner preference for the chews correlated significantly with dog appetitive behavior, but the effect was small (r (702) = 0.22, p = 0.001), whereas owner-reported dog preference correlated significantly with dog appetitive behavior and showed a moderate effect size (r (702) = 0.43, p = 0.001)-similar in magnitude to findings when parents are asked to report on their children's behavior. By merging objective behavioral observation of owner-recorded videos with their survey responses, we were able to preliminarily parse out what factors owners may use to assess preference and encourage the future use of in-home video recordings to better understand dog and owner engagement and interaction with pet products.
