We give a brief outline of the theory of hyperfine quenching followed by a review of the progress that has been made in both theory and experiment since the pioneering work of Garstang (J. Opt. Soc. Am. 52, 845 (1962)). The magnetic octupole moment of [sup.87]Rb is determined from hyperfine intervals in the 5p ²[P.sub.3/2] state measured by Ye et al. Opt. Lett. 21, 1280 (1996). Hyperfine constants A = 84.7189(22) MHz, B = 12.4942(43) MHz, and C = -0.12(09) kHz are obtained from the published measurements. The existence of a significant value for C indicates the presence of a nuclear magnetic octupole moment Ω. Combining the hyperfine constants with atomic structure calculations, we obtain Ω = -0.58(39) b[μ.sub.N]. Second-order corrections arising from the interaction with the nearby 5p ²[P.sub.1/2] state are found to be insignificant. The story of Vertumnus in Ovid's 'Metamorphoses' does not fit the pattern of transvestite rape represented in other portions of the poem but is the tale of Vertumnus' attempt to win over Pomona's love. Vertumnus, unlike the other gods, dresses up like, not transforms into, a woman to be with Pomona, not rape her. The placement of the romance in the poem calls into question the reading of history as ending with Rome.

An escape from rabid multiculturalism entails comparing literatures in different languages with the goal of showing that the similarities reveal both differences and similarities. In the late 20th century this cannot be taken for granted. Cultural studies may entail a new division of labor on comparative literature and the classics. The term 'literature' may no longer be very helpful, especially where ancient literature is concerned.

The rape of Callisto in Ovid's epic 'Metamorphoses' is treated as a patriarchal and mildly pornographic cautionary tale in which an innocent girl is tricked, raped, and made to suffer horribly for most of her life. While Callisto's fate is represented as tragic, there lies throughout the tale an unspoken implication that she must have done something to deserve her suffering. The method in which her story is told portrays her as an object for both feminine scorn and the male gaze, while her victimization is presented in a titillating manner.

Digitized Space Shuttle imagery in the red, green, and blue spectral regions (0.600, 0.540, and 0.435 micrometer, respectively) is used to characterize the mean radius and the index of refraction of droplets in cumulus and orographic clouds. The clouds are shown to consist concurrently of submicrometer and supermicrometer droplets, with the percent polarization indicative of the dominant sizes. Cloud development from haze as well as inhomogeneities in the cloud decks can be traced remotely. The absorption properties of clouds can also be determined remotely. An optical depth of continental haze in the same three spectral regions as the clouds is computed from the polarimetric and photometric contributions. Both Mie and Rayleigh scattering are included in the model.

A significant advance is reported in imaging the polarimetry of a terrestrial area of Earth located along the Mississippi River near New Madrid, Missouri. Color imagery was obtained with twin Hasselblad cameras with mutually perpendicular polarization analyzers. Digitization of the imagery in three colors (red, green, and blue) was accomplished at the Johnson Space Center Video Digital Analysis System Laboratory, Houston, Texas. A ground resolution of 80-90 m was achieved in the high-resolution imagery. Percent polarization was superior to photometry for recognition and characterization of farm crops such as rice, milo, cotton, and soybeans and of fallow areas. Statistical analyses of the percent-polarization data permit a unique classification of crops. Atmospheric effects may be deduced Space-shuttle window distortion and viewing angle-sun geometry must be taken into account in analyzing the data.
