ABSTRACTInternet of Things (IoT) and blockchain are complex digital technologies characterized by a strong connection and dependency between individuals, data, and information technology (IT). A socio-technical perspective that captures the dynamic interaction of social, legal, and technical artifacts is essential to understanding the IoT and blockchain phenomena. This review provides direction for employing a social-technical perspective across IoT and blockchain studies. The findings lead to new insights for developing a theoretical framework, research model, and research agenda to investigate IoT and blockchain technology. Practitioners and institutions can use these findings to develop strategies to promote the adoption of IoT and blockchain technologies through specific technical, legal, and social strategies. Overall, this research is unique in its attempt to trace new trajectories for future IS scholars and practitioners facing the complexity of IoT and blockchain.

ABSTRACTThis research investigates the social, legal, and technological factors that affect the adoption of Internet of Things wearable devices (WIoT) among young adults during and before a healthcare crisis. The study develops a technological acceptance model by integrating the Technological-Personal-Environmental (TPE) framework with new constructs, i.e. regulatory environment, epidemic ecosystem, perceived social usefulness, and WIoT devices’ technical characteristics. A research survey is developed and distributed to undergraduate and graduate students in a major university located in the USA. The research hypotheses are tested by using partial least square modeling. Results of the analysis lead to significant contributions for both academics and practitioners.

ABSTRACTSocial network services (SNSs) have attracted more than 4.3 billion users worldwide. However, many feel SNSs have had an overall negative impact on society. This study utilizes the theory of reasoned action and rational choice theory to explore factors impacting SNS continuance. In addition, the study explores the moderating effect of commitment (i.e., whether an individual is considering leaving their SNS), on factors impacting continuance intention. Using 492 responses collected using MTurk, findings indicate that perceived benefits (i.e., enjoyment and learning) and the costs of non-usage (i.e., fear of missing out (FoMO)) positively impact an individual’s attitude toward SNS continuance while the cost of usage (i.e., privacy concerns) has a negative effect. Also, commitment was found to significantly affect the impact of FoMO on attitudes toward continuance. This study makes several significant contributions both to theory and practice related to individuals evolving perspectives on SNS usage.

ABSTRACTCoproduction is defined as collaboration between an organization and the consumer in the design, marketing, or delivery of goods or services, which the consumer ultimately utilizes. While coproduction has existed for decades, the transition from a full-service to a coproduction environment, if not handled correctly, can be met with apprehension, resistance, or resentment by the consumer. The impact of coproduction resentment has received limited attention in information systems research. This study highlights the importance of including coproduction in the nomological net and explores the impact of coproduction resentment on continuance intention within the context of self-service technology, in particular self-checkout. A sample of 309 responses from individuals in the United States was collected using a survey instrument and crowdsourcing. Utilizing the IS continuance model as the theoretical lens, results indicate that coproduction resentment has a negative impact on both consumer satisfaction and continuance intention.

The article discusses job skills needed by information technology (IT) professionals in relation to career stages. Topics include the opinions of chief information officers (CIOs), the relative skills needed by mid-level IT managers and entry level IT professionals, and the development of management and leadership skills by IT professionals.

ABSTRACTSelf-service technologies allow organizations to shift work from employees to the consumer, creating a coproduction environment where the consumer is an active participant in the delivery of a service, which they ultimately consume. While these technologies can have benefits for both consumers and the organizations, they can also present challenges (e.g., value erosion, feelings of coercion) that may give rise to consumer resentment. This study, using the theory of reasoned action as its theoretical lens, is one of the first in information systems to explore coproduction resentment. In particular, this study investigates the coproduction resentment within the context of self-checkout continuance intention. The study also investigates the effect of technology anxiety, fear of confrontation due to misuse, and technology-driven job losses on coproduction resentment. The study found support for the seven proposed hypotheses.

ABSTRACTThe number of brick and mortar retailers that have closed their doors or filed bankruptcy is staggering and crosses virtually every retail segment. As consumer demographics evolve and more consumers move to online purchasing, the question arises as to what role brick and mortar stores will play in the future. This pressure has driven retailers to employ new technology aimed at improving efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing the consumer’s experience. This study, using diffusion of innovation as its theoretical lens, explores the impact of consumer confusion on the adoption of mobile self-checkout (MSCO) technology. A total of 217 responses were collected using crowdsourcing from respondents residing in the United States. Findings indicate that consumer confusion impacts usage intention through relative advantage (reducing consumer confusion) and compatibility. Relative advantage (saving time) positively impacts compatibility. Trialability and compatibility directly impact MSCO usage intention.

ABSTRACTThe roles of women in the workforce have changed significantly over the past several decades. While there has been considerable progress made by women into leadership positions, this progress has been slow. This article explores factors that may impact the ability of women in information technology (IT) to move into leadership positions. Data collected for the Society of Information Management IT Trend Study for 2015, 2016, and 2017 were analyzed, and corporate characteristics that impact female advancement into leadership positions were explored. Results suggest that there are opportunities for women in IT. The percentage of women in positions of leadership is steadily increasing in a wide range of industries. However, there is an evidence to suggest that industry’s gender composition as well as company size (revenue) may impact the gender of the IT leader. Also, some interesting differences in performance measures based on the leader’s gender are discussed.
