Abstract

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this work was to provide a review of the implementation of data science-driven applications focused on structural or outcome-related nurse-sensitive indicators in the literature in 2021. By conducting this review, we aim to inform readers of trends in the nursing indicators being addressed, the patient populations and settings of focus, and lessons and challenges identified during the implementation of these tools. METHODS: We conducted a rigorous descriptive review of the literature to identify relevant research published in 2021. We extracted data on model development, implementation-related strategies and measures, lessons learned, and challenges and stakeholder involvement. We also assessed whether reports of data science application implementations currently follow the guidelines of the Developmental and Exploratory Clinical Investigations of DEcision support systems driven by AI (DECIDE-AI) framework. RESULTS: Of 4,943 articles found in PubMed (NLM) and CINAHL (EBSCOhost), 11 were included in the final review and data extraction. Systems leveraging data science were developed for adult patient populations and were primarily deployed in hospital settings. The clinical domains targeted included mortality/deterioration, utilization/resource allocation, and hospital-acquired infections/COVID-19. The composition of development teams and types of stakeholders involved varied. Research teams more frequently reported on implementation methods than implementation results. Most studies provided lessons learned that could help inform future implementations of data science systems in health care. CONCLUSION: In 2021, very few studies report on the implementation of data science-driven applications focused on structural- or outcome-related nurse-sensitive indicators. This gap in the sharing of implementation strategies needs to be addressed in order for these systems to be successfully adopted in health care settings.

17. What Is Business School Research For? Academic and Stakeholder Perspectives, Politics and Relationality

Abstract

Through an empirically grounded analysis of contested interpretations of impact held by business school academics and wider stakeholders, we provide a political and relational understanding of research impact whereby impacts are realized through situated, relational and ongoing interactions. Our qualitative study of three UK business and management schools, comprising interviews with around 70 researchers, academic leaders and stakeholders explores conceptualizations of impact, examines the processes through which impact is achieved and considers the influence of the Research Excellence Framework (REF). The inclusion of academic leaders and business stakeholders adds value to studies that have focused primarily on academic researchers. We present a nuanced picture of the ways in which academics and business stakeholders conceptualize impact and navigate the complexity of roles and relationships in this arena. Implications for practice include the desirability of embracing different understandings of impact, creating space for generative dialogue and incorporating impact more explicitly in teaching and learning.

Abstract

Schistosomiasis is a snail-borne parasitic disease that ranks among the most important water-based diseases of humans in developing countries. Increased prevalence and spread of human schistosomiasis to non-endemic areas has been consistently linked with water resource management related to agricultural expansion. However, the role of agrochemical pollution in human schistosome transmission remains unexplored, despite strong evidence of agrochemicals increasing snail-borne diseases of wildlife and a projected 2- to 5-fold increase in global agrochemical use by 2050. Using a field mesocosm experiment, we show that environmentally relevant concentrations of fertilizer, a herbicide, and an insecticide, individually and as mixtures, increase densities of schistosome-infected snails by increasing the algae snails eat and decreasing densities of snail predators. Epidemiological models indicate that these agrochemical effects can increase transmission of schistosomes. Identifying agricultural practices or agrochemicals that minimize disease risk will be critical to meeting growing food demands while improving human wellbeing.

23. A Framework to Embed Communication Skills across the Curriculum: A Design-Based Research Approach

Abstract

There is widespread recognition that universities are now delivering higher education to diverse student populations with very different needs and aspirations from the more traditional cohorts of the past. In order to prepare students for a broad range of employment opportunities, universities are also fostering the development of "graduate attributes" or "essential learning outcomes," in addition to content knowledge and disciplinary expertise. This paper reports on a project to develop a university-wide "Framework" to embed the teaching, learning and assessment of communication skills in curricula at Murdoch University. The Framework, which was developed by academic and professional staff at the Centre for University Teaching and Learning (CUTL), aims to support both staff and students through an integrated set of services and resources intended to develop communication skills within discipline-based courses. The project follows a design-based research approach, and has deliberately built on initiatives at other universities and best practice reported in the literature. This paper reports on work in progress, following the first two stages of design-based research: analysis and exploration, and design and construction. The project has generated design principles that can be applied at other universities.

[...], In addition to rules of professional responsibility applicable to the practice of law generally, some legal specialties have complementary ethical rules or guidelines tailored to the unique aspects of that area. In tax law, important additional rules include regulations promulgated by the Department of the Treasury to govern practice before the Internal Revenue Service. Tax malpractice suits against tax advisors have multiplied in recent decades. As a result, incompetent or dishonest tax advisors risk incurring liability for malpractice damages as well as being disciplined under bar or government rules. This situation raises the question whether the Treasury Department's professional responsibility regulations should be doctrinally connected to the governing standard of care in tax malpractice litigation. That is, should proof that one of the regulations has been violated be considered evidence-whether rebuttable or irrebuttable-that the malpractice standard of care was not satisfied? There are arguments in favor of linkage. However, this Article concludes that, on balance, linkage would be unwise. The Article considers the various forms that linkage could take and rejects their desirability. The purposes animating the Treasury and the Service are not well correlated with the purposes animating the malpractice system. Basing malpractice litigation outcomes on the Treasury professional responsibility regulations could undermine lawyer-client relationships; federalize state malpractice regimes; create an ever present possibility of the Service's abuse; confuse, prolong, and raise the cost of malpractice cases; and distort the development of federal tax disciplinary law.

27. Perspective: THz-driven nuclear dynamics from solids to molecules.

Abstract

Recent years have seen dramatic developments in the technology of intense pulsed light sources in the THz frequency range. Since many dipole-active excitations in solids and molecules also lie in this range, there is now a tremendous potential to use these light sources to study linear and nonlinear dynamics in such systems. While several experimental investigations of THz-driven dynamics in solid-state systems have demonstrated a variety of interesting linear and nonlinear phenomena, comparatively few efforts have been made to drive analogous dynamics in molecular systems. In the present Perspective article, we discuss the similarities and differences between THz-driven dynamics in solid-state and molecular systems on both conceptual and practical levels. We also discuss the experimental parameters needed for these types of experiments and thereby provide design criteria for a further development of this new research branch. His ministry was filled with tension, as he sought to maintain his affinity for the worship of the Church of England while introducing liturgical innovations such as the watchnight, lovefeast, covenant renewal and preaching services. A question emerges: How did he hold these very diverse patterns of worship together? Why was it so important to him? What was it about his liturgical theology that encouraged and enabled him to lead the Methodists in both traditional and innovative liturgical patterns? Wesley refused to be confined to either his inherited liturgical practices or his innovative liturgies. This thesis seeks to offer a solution as to why. This thesis will assess Wesley’s liturgical texts in their historical and pastoral context in light of Wesley’s commitment to a ‘religion of the heart.’ Chapter one will seek to establish ‘heart religion’ and the restoration of the image of God as foundational for Wesley, and establish that this foundation was worked out through his liturgical theology and practice. With ‘heart religion’ or Wesley’s ‘affectional’ theology as a hermeneutical lens, this thesis will evaluate the sources, texts and contributions of each part of Wesley’s worship corpus, making specific reference to the way each aspect of Methodist worship contributed to the restoration of the Image of God in humanity. Wesley’s incorporation of the traditional liturgical resources of the Church of England, specifically the Book of Common Prayer, and his own adaptation of the BCP, the Sunday Service, will be examined in chapters two and three. Chapter four will explore Wesley’s own unique form of catechism, Instructions for Children, and its use in character formation. Largely unexplored, Wesley’s Instructions emerges as an integral piece of his liturgical theology. Chapter five will consider the watchnight, lovefeast, covenant and preaching services, specifically addressing how each service was developed and how it contributed to the formation and manifestation of Christian affections among the Methodists. Wesley’s ultimate goal in worship was the honouring of God and the edification of the Church. He believed that God was honoured when the Church was edified, and the church was best edified when God’s people began to manifest Christian affections such as love, joy, humility and gratefulness. When these affections were practiced consistently, they were habituated into holy tempers. This development of holy tempers was the objective of the Christian life for Wesley. This was the goal and purpose of John Wesley’s liturgical theology.

Abstract

Postacute sequelae after the coronavirus disease (COVID) of 2019 (PASC) is increasingly recognized, although data on solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients (SOTRs) are limited. Using the National COVID Cohort Collaborative, we performed 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) of all adult SOTR and nonimmunosuppressed/immunocompromised (ISC) patients with acute COVID infection (August 1, 2021 to January 13, 2023) for a subsequent PASC diagnosis using International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification codes. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine not only the association of SOT status with PASC, but also other patient factors after stratifying by SOT status. Prior to PSM, there were 8769 SOT and 1 576 769 non-ISC patients with acute COVID infection. After PSM, 8756 SOTR and 8756 non-ISC patients were included; 2.2% of SOTR (n = 192) and 1.4% (n = 122) of non-ISC patients developed PASC (Pvalue < .001). In the overall matched cohort, SOT was independently associated with PASC (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.48; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09-2.01). Among SOTR, COVID infection severity (aOR, 11.6; 95% CI, 3.93-30.0 for severe vs mild disease), older age (aOR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.01-1.03 per year), and mycophenolate mofetil use (aOR, 2.04; 95% CI, 1.38-3.05) were each independently associated with PASC. In non-ISC patients, only depression (aOR, 1.96; 95% CI, 1.24-3.07) and COVID infection severity were. In conclusion, PASC occurs more commonly in SOTR than in non-ISC patients, with differences in risk profiles based on SOT status.
