The present study aimed to assess the physico-chemical quality of wastewater(s) in order to better control the flow of various pollutants generated by the industries from the industrial zone of Cotonou. Water samples were collected in triplicate in each collector and analyzed for their nutrient and metal content (Cu2+, Fe2+, Cd2+, Al3+ and Pb2+) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) and a five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) were carried out by spectrophotometry. The results revealed highly mineralized waters, indicated by average pH (6.97± 0.34), dissolved oxygen (5.16 ± 0.29 mg/L), electrical conductivity (2280.58 ± 263.97 µS/cm) and total dissolved solids (1076.04 ± 51.01 mg/L). The values of COD (482.05± 1.18 mg/L) and BOD5 (291.67 ±2.19 mg/L) were very high, exceeding the standard for industrial wastewater discharge in Benin respectively by 5 and 11 which is indicative of the presence of very poor biodegradable materials coming essentially from industrial discharge in the study area. The concentration of Cd2+, Pb2+ and nutrient salts indicative of eutrophication were relatively low in the collectors. However, the concentration of Al3+ (2.65±0.03 mg/L) and Cu2+ (10.20 ± 0.14 mg/L) were very high with the later cation being four times higher than the wastewater standard in Benin (2.5 mg/L) for the most heavily loaded collectors. In conclusion, the results of this study provide useful insights for implementation of purification system and efficient management of wastewater from industries.

Le lac Ahémé est l’un des plans d’eau du Bénin soumis à d’intenses pressions anthropiques à l’origine de diverses formes de pollution. Cette étude a été menée dans le but d’évaluer la qualité sanitaire des crabes (Callinectes amnicola) prélevés dans le lac Ahémé au Sud du Bénin exposé à de multiples sources de pollution. Trois Eléments Traces Métalliques (Pb, Cu, Zn) ont été analysés dans les sédiments et les crabes à l’aide d’un spectrophotomètre d’absorption atomique DR 2800. L’analyse des données enregistrées a montré que les crabes ont été fortement contaminés par les ETM. En effet, les valeurs de Plomb, de Zinc et de Cuivre (respectivement 20,944±11,237 ; 30,565±5,954 et 59,915±12,597) enregistrées pendant les deux saisons (Basses Eaux et Hautes Eaux) dans les crabes sont largement supérieures aux normes (respectivement 0,1 ; 5 et 1). En ce qui concerne les sédiments, les plus fortes concentrations de Plomb (21,316 mg/kg) et de Cuivre (512,92 mg/kg) ont été enregistrées à DOYI et celle du Zinc (65,74 mg/kg) à KPETOU. Lake Ahémé is one of the bodies of water in Benin subject to intense anthropogenic pressures that cause various forms of pollution. This study was carried out to assess the health quality of crabs (Callinectes amnicola) collected from Lake Ahémé in southern Benin exposed to multiple sources of pollution. Three Metallic Trace Elements (Pb, Cu and Zn) were analyzed in the sediments and the crabs using a DR 2800 atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The analysis of the recorded data showed that the crabs were highly contaminated by ETMs. Indeed, the values of Lead, Zinc and Copper (respectively 20.944±11.237, 30.565±5.954 and 59.915±12.597) recorded during the two seasons (Low Water and High Water) in the crabs are well above the standards (respectively 0.1; 5 and 1). The mode of transmission of Buruli ulcer (BU) is not yet well understood. This study aimed to identify risk factors for BU in the district of Lalo in Benin. This is a case-control study taking into account all cases of BU detected from 2013 to 2018 and treated at the Buruli’s ulcer Screening and Treatment Center (CDTUB) of Lalo. For each case, two controls were matched according to age and sex. Conditional logistic regression was used to compare risk factors in cases and controls. A total of 59 BU cases and 118 controls were enrolled. After adjustment for potential confounding factors, illiteracy (adjusted odd ratio [aOR] = 18.19; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.50-219.45), unawareness of BU risk factors (aOR = 48.21; 95% CI = 4.67-497.15), bathing in rivers or ponds (aOR = 23.66; 95% CI= 2.82-198.52), field activities in mud (aOR = 60.58; 95% CI = 7.44 – 493.09) and not wearing protective clothing during field activities (aOR = 42.78; 95% CI = 2.05 – 892.33) were associated with BU. It is necessary to mitigate risk factors by implementing actions in the field of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and by insisting on the wearing of protective equipment during agricultural activities and/or contact with surface water. Objectif : Analyser la qualité-fraicheur de Trachurus trachurus (chinchard) et Scomber scombrus (maquereau) importés entreposés dans des chambres froides au Bénin. Méthodologie et résultats : Une enquête a été réalisée dans vingt chambres froides de stockage de produits congelés par ratissage systématique dans le Littoral, l’Atlantique et l’Ouémé. Quarante (40) personnes ont fait objet d’enquête. D’autres réponses ont été obtenues à partir d’observations selon la méthode des 5 M (matières premières, matériels, méthodes, milieu, main d’oeuvre). Cette phase a été suivie d’une collecte d’échantillons de poissons pour les analyses sensorielle, physicochimique et microbiologique en décembre 2019. Les températures enregistrées oscillent autour entre de -7°C et -18°C. L’analyse sensorielle a révélé que les poissons stockés à une température stricte de -18°C sont à la catégorie A donc de qualité de fraîcheur satisfaisante. Au plan physico-chimique, les valeurs de pH (6,4 à 7,02) sont dans la limite acceptable ; à peine 41% des échantillons sont conformes à la norme en teneur en Azote Basique Volatile Total (=25 mg N/100g de poisson). Au plan microbiologique, aucune différence significative n’a été observée entre les échantillons de poissons quelle que soit la température de conservation avec prédominance des entérobactéries. Conclusion et applications : Une conservation rigoureuse à la température -18°C empêcherait de façon significative la prolifération de la flore microbienne contaminant des poissons importés. Ce résultat constitue un outil d’alerte à l’endroit des Inspecteurs sanitaires et services de contrôle des produits halieutiques. English title: Quality-freshness of imported Trachurus trachurus (horse mackerel) and Scomber scombrus (mackerel) stored in cold rooms in Benin ABSTRACT Objective: Analyze the freshness quality of imported Trachurus trachurus (horse mackerel) and Scomber scombrus (mackerel) stored in cold rooms in Benin. Methodology and results: A survey was carried out in twenty cold storage rooms of frozen products by systematic sweeping in the Littoral, Atlantic and Ouémé regions. Forty (40) people were surveyed. Other responses were obtained from observation according to the 5 M method (raw materials, materials, methods, environment, and manpower). This phase was followed by a collection of fish samples for sensory, physicochemical and microbiological analysis in December 2019. Temperatures recorded ranged from -7°C to -18°C. The sensory analysis revealed that the fish stored at a strict temperature of -18°C are at category A therefore of satisfactory freshness quality. Physico-chemically, the pH values (6.4 to 7.02) are within the acceptable limit; barely 41% of the samples comply with the standard in terms of Total Volatile Basic Nitrogen content (=25 mg N/100g of fish). Microbiologically, no significant difference was observed between the fish samples regardless of the storage temperature, with a predominance of enterobacteria. Conclusion and applications: A rigorous conservation at -18°C would significantly prevent the proliferation of microbial flora contaminating fish. Objectif: L’usage de Ocimum gratissimum Lamiaceae (Basilic tropical) est très répandu au Bénin. Cette utilisation repose sur les connaissances empiriques des populations. Il est légitime de se demander si les vertus attribuées à cette plante reposent sur des bases scientifiques et sa consommation sans conséquences néfastes pour la santé humaine.Méthodologie et résultats: Une étude ethnobotanique a ciblé les vendeurs de légumes feuilles des trois principaux marchés (Dantokpa ; Saint Michel ; Vêdoko), quelques phytothérapeutes, des agents de santé et des consommateurs de Cotonou la capitale de la République du Bénin. Elle a été complétée par une étude phytochimique basée sur des réactions de précipitations différentielles, complétée par le dosage des métaux lourds (Plomb ; Cadmium), de quelques éléments nutritifs et oligo-éléments par spectrophotométrie d’absorption moléculaire.Il ressort des investigations plusieurs usages de Ocimum gratissimum Linn (médicinal ; alimentaire ; rituel ; chimique ; ornemental). Cette plante renferme plusieurs groupes phytochimique (phénoliques ; azotés ; stéroïdes ; terpènes ; mucilages ; dérivés cyanogéniques), des éléments nutritifs (Protéines ; Azote ; Fer ; Zinc ; Cuivre). Par ailleurs, nos résultats montrent la présence de métaux lourds (Plomb ; Cadmium) dans des concentrations supérieures aux normes OMS.Conclusion et application des résultats: Les résultats des analyses phytochimiques et nutritionnelles confirment les usages empiriques identifiés lors de l’étude ethnobotanique. Cette plante est un remède dans la prévention et le traitement de certaines maladies, un complément alimentaire, une solution alternative dans la lutte chimique. Toutefois, la présence des Éléments Traces Métalliques avec des concentrations supérieures aux normes OMS traduit un risque potentiel pour la santé humaine. This study evaluated whether the virtues attributed to this plant are focused on rational basis and that its consumption is without adverse consequences for human health.Methodology and Results: An ethnobotanical study targeting leaves from vegetable vendors in the three major markets (Dantokpa ; Saint Michel ; Vêdoko), some herbalists, health workers and consumers was conducted in Cotonou the capital city of Benin. A phytochemical study based on differential precipitation reactions was carried out, supplemented by the determination of heavy metals (lead, cadmium) and some nutrients by molecular absorption spectrophotometry.The investigations revealed several uses of Ocimum gratissimum Linn (Lamiaceae) i.e medicinal, food, ritual, chemical and ornamental. It contains phytochemicals compound such as phenolic; nitrogen; steroids; terpenes; mucilage; derived cyanogenic and several nutrients (protein; Nitrogen; Iron; Zinc; Copper). The results also reveal the presence of heavy metals (lead, cadmium) in concentrations above the WHO standards.Conclusion and implementation of the results: The results of phytochemical and nutritional analyzes confirmed the empirical uses identified in the ethnobotanical study. This plant is a remedy in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases, an excellent dietary supplement, and an alternative to chemical control. The presence of Trace of Elements Metals with concentrations higher than the WHO standards reflects a potential risk to human health.
