School-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) is an inclusive multi-tiered system of behavioral supports that has been widely adopted by K-12 schools in the United States. SWPBIS focuses on creating safe, equitable, and inclusive school environments and has been linked to both positive behavioral and academic outcomes for students and improved perceptions of efficacy and job satisfaction for school personnel. However, there remain concerns about the involvement of students with extensive support needs (ESN) in SWPBIS despite calls to action in 2006 and 2016 for research in this area. Addressing these concerns, we conducted a scoping review to examine the current research literature on SWPBIS and students with ESN. We found that only 10 studies have been conducted since the 2006 call to action. Studies primarily focused on stakeholder perspectives regarding the importance or availability of SWPBIS for students with ESN. Although few studies examined SWPBIS effectiveness, findings from these studies lend support to the effectiveness of Tier 1 SWPBIS for students with ESN. We describe several key implications for supporting the inclusion of students with ESN in SWPBIS and future research initiatives.

The primary purpose of conducting a structured interview as part of a functional behavior assessment (FBA) is to assist teams in generating a hypothesis about the reason for a student's problem behavior based on specific information. Although the use of an interview can be beneficial in identifying the function of a student's behavior, it often only includes information provided by teachers, support staff, and family members and overlooks the student's involvement. In this article, we discuss some of the barriers educators may encounter during the structured interview process and describe in detail possible solutions and adaptations educators can use to assist in planning and successfully conducting a student-involved structured interview as part of the FBA process.

This study investigates the degree to which pre-service interdisciplinary groups of undergraduate education candidates recognize co-teaching skills and behaviors in practice. With the increasing emphasis on collaborative teaching models in contemporary educational settings, understanding how future educators perceive and identify effective co-teaching practices is crucial for enhancing educational preparation programs (EPPs). Using a mixed-methods approach, this study analyzed consensus ratings from an interdisciplinary assignment that asked candidates to work collaboratively while identifying best practices in co-teaching across example and non-example videos. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using student ratings and videos of group discussion for consensus scoring. Quantitative data were collected using consensus ratings for each indicator on the observation checklist. Qualitative data derived from video transcripts of the consensus rating sessions illuminated the process each group used and reasons each group provided for consensus ratings. The findings reveal varying degrees of recognition and understanding of co-teaching skills, highlighting both strengths and areas for improvement in the candidates' ability to identify and apply these practices. This study provides valuable insights into the preparedness of pre-service educators for collaborative teaching environments and offers recommendations for integrating co-teaching competencies more effectively into EPPs. Thirty general education candidates from elementary education, middle/secondary education, and arts education in multiple sections of one course engaged in a series of discussion posts and lesson plans related to creating inclusive general education lessons. Using candidate posts, rubric scores, feedback on lesson plans, and course evaluation ratings, a mixed methods approach was used to understand candidate knowledge, perceptions, and applications of Universal Design for Learning. The results from our research have important implications for policy, practice, and research. Policy makers must be aware of the lack of UDL in general education programs and IHEs need to do more than the cursory coverage of these principles. The study examined the effects of multilevel coaching on three elementary general education teachers' implementation fidelity of culturally responsive social skill instruction and on three African American students' classroom behaviors. After receiving initial professional development training on integrating culturally responsive social skill instruction into daily curriculum, the teacher participants received coaching supports based on their performance data. The researchers assessed teachers' implementation fidelity using an evaluation rubric that addressed both lesson plan development and lesson plan implementation, and evaluated students' behaviors through classroom observations using a single-case multiple probe across teacher-student dyads design. Results of the study showed that all teachers improved their implementation fidelity during the coaching condition. All students substantially reduced the levels of noncompliance with classroom rules after teachers received coaching supports.

Many general education teachers have indicated they do not feel well prepared to meet the academic and behavioral needs of students with extensive support needs (ESN). Although teachers cite limited training, preparation, and experience as notable barriers to general education placements for students with ESN, the opportunity and success of the inclusion of students with ESN in general education, should never be dependent on the previous preparation of teachers. To address and reduce some of the identified barriers, this article proposes ways in which many strategies commonly used for instruction with students without disabilities can readily be adapted to allow not only access for students with disabilities but to also promote active engagement and progress towards learning the general education content standards.
