Manganese oxide is an effective promoter for enhancing the activity and selectivity of cobalt-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) catalysts. Previous studies suggest that Co atoms located at the Co-MnO perimeter adsorb CO more strongly and undergo C-O bond cleavage more readily than CO adsorbed on Co sites, which leads to improved C5+ selectivity. Thus, direct characterization of the formation and structure of the active interface between Co nanoparticles and MnO is essential for a full understanding of the FTS promotion effect. Scanning transmission electron microscopic (STEM) methods are well-suited for direct characterization of nanoscale features through imaging, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) elemental mapping, and spatially resolved electron diffraction, a technique known as scanning nanobeam diffraction. However, these techniques require that the catalytic nanoparticles are non-overlapping and well-defined, which is not typical for nanoparticles on porous metal oxide FTS supports. In the present study, we addressed these challenges by synthesizing catalysts composed of cobalt dispersed on nonporous alumina nanospheres (Co/ANS), which yielded isolated nanoparticles that are amenable to elemental and phase mapping by STEM-EDS and scanning nanobeam diffraction. Then, manganese oxide-promoted Co/ANS (Mn-Co/ANS) was characterized using these two techniques, which provided direct evidence for the transformation of a Co-Mn oxide spinel present in the as-prepared catalyst into closely associated Co3O4 and MnO2 nanoparticles in the passivated catalyst after its use for FTS.

In this perspective, we examine three key aspects of an end-to-end pipeline for realistic cellular simulations: reconstruction and segmentation of cellular structures; generation of cellular structures; and mesh generation, simulation, and data analysis. We highlight some of the relevant prior work in these distinct but overlapping areas, with a particular emphasis on current use of machine learning technologies, as well as on future opportunities.

The purpose of this article is to make an overlooked source of knowledge accessible to school teachers and administrators in order to challenge the prevalent discourse of cultural deprivation in urban schools and thus provide a more equitable education for all. Little is known about rich knowledge and self-education practices within prisons which could contribute to culturally relevant pedagogy as well as decrease the stigma of prison contact. Using portraiture methodology, we present a portrait of EL'YAH'el, a formerly-incarcerated African American man who participated in self-education in prison as both a student and a teacher. Framing our work with reality pedagogy, we contend that understanding the traditions of self-education in prison can provide clues for teacher education programs committed to acknowledging and building upon their students' realities. We suggest the flow of knowledge from prisons to schools as the "prison-to-school" pipeline and conclude with recommendations for pedagogy and policy.

The efficacy of tandem dehydrogenation-condensation catalysts for the upgrade of bio-derived intermediates is largely determined by their relative (de-)hydrogenation and decarbonylation activity. Here, the effects of support and particle size of heterogeneous PdCu alloy catalysts on (de-)hydrogenation and decarbonlylation reactions were investigated using kinetic measurements, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT). The chemical mismatch of Cu2+ with Ti4+ and Ca2+ prevents the substitution of Cu into the lattice of TiO2 or hydroxyapatite supports, and facilitates its alloying with Pd, resulting in improved selectivity for hydrogenation-dehydrogenation reactions compared to decarbonylation reactions. Based on kinetic measurements of butyraldehyde reactions over Pd and PdCu/SiO2 model catalysts, decarbonylation activity is attributed to the presence of Pd surface ensembles, while (de-)hydrogenation reactions are catalyzed by PdCu sites on the surface. This is consistent with selectivity and CO coverage trends with increasing conversion, and DFT-based microkinetic modeling. Selectivity control can also be achieved using the PdCu nanocluster size. Smaller nanoparticles favor the C-CO bond scission step of the decarbonylation reaction, due to the stronger binding of CO and alkyl species to sites of lower coordination. CO-induced segregation of reactive Pd atoms to under-coordinated step/edge sites also amplifies the geometric effect on the catalytic behavior.

Research on the screen time of young children and its relationship to their cognitive and social development is controversial. Based on a stratified, random sample of 579 five-year-old children in Guangdong, China, this study explores the relationship between the screen time of Chinese children and their cognitive and social development. Specifically, we assessed children's receptive vocabulary, math skills, executive functioning, science knowledge, and social skills in relationship to their active and passive screen times. Results indicate that the passive screen time of Chinese preschool children was negatively associated with their mathematics achievement, science performance, executive functioning, and social skills. Active screen time was positively associated with their receptive language skills and science knowledge. Additionally, the screen time of Chinese children in this study exceeded American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations, and boys, children in rural communities, and children in single-child households were especially vulnerable to the negative associations of screen time. Discussions of the findings and recommendations for policies and practice are included.

The molecular precursor tris[(tri-tert-butoxy)siloxy]gallium, as the tetrahydrofuran adduct Ga[OSi(O(t)Bu)3]3·THF (), was synthesized via the salt metathesis reaction of gallium trichloride with NaOSi(O(t)Bu)3. This complex serves as a model for isolated gallium in a silica framework. Complex decomposes thermally in hydrocarbon solvent, eliminating isobutylene, water, and tert-butanol to generate high surface area gallium-containing silica at low temperatures. When thermal decomposition was performed in the presence of P-123 Pluronic as a templating agent the generated material displayed uniform vermicular pores. Textural mesoporosity was evident in untemplated material. Co-thermolysis of with HOSi(O(t)Bu)3 in the presence of P-123 Pluronic led to materials with Ga : Si ratios ranging from 1 : 3 to 1 : 50, denoted UCB1-GaSi3, UCB1-GaSi10, UCB1-GaSi20 and UCB1-GaSi50. After calcination at 500 °C these materials exhibited decreasing surface areas and broadening pore distributions with increasing silicon content, indicating a loss of template effects. The position and dispersion of the gallium in UCB1-GaSi materials was investigated using (71)Ga MAS-NMR, powder XRD, and STEM/EDS elemental mapping. The results indicate a high degree of gallium dispersion in all samples, with gallium oxide clusters or oligomers present at higher gallium content.

Condensation reactions such as Guerbet and aldol are important since they allow for C-C bond formation and give higher molecular weight oxygenates. An initial study identified Pd-supported on hydrotalcite as an active catalyst for the transformation, although this catalyst showed extensive undesirable decarbonylation. A catalyst containing Pd and Cu in a 3:1 ratio dramatically decreased decarbonylation, while preserving the high catalytic rates seen with Pd-based catalysts. A combination of XRD, EXAFS, TEM, and CO chemisorption and TPD revealed the formation of CuPd bimetallic nanoparticles with a Cu-enriched surface. Finally, density functional theory studies suggest that the surface segregation of Cu atoms in the bimetallic alloy catalyst produces Cu sites with increased reactivity, while the Pd sites responsible for unselective decarbonylation pathways are selectively poisoned by CO.

Metal oxides of Ce, Gd, La, Mn, and Zr were investigated as promoters for improving the activity and selectivity of Co-based FTS catalysts. The extent to which these promoters decrease the selectivity toward CH4 and increase the selectivity toward C5+ hydrocarbons was found to depend on both the loading and the composition of the oxide promoter. Elemental mapping by STEM-EDS revealed that the propensity for a given metal oxide to associate with Co affects the sensitivity of the product distribution to changes in promoter loading. For all promoters, a sufficiently high loading resulted in the product distributions becoming insensitive to further increases in promoter loading, very likely due to the formation of a half monolayer of promoter oxide over the Co surface. Simulations suggest that the fraction of Co active sites that are adjacent to the promoter moieties approaches unity at this degree of coverage. The oxidation state of the promoter metal cation under reaction conditions, determined by in situ XANES measurements, was used to calculate relative Lewis acidity of the promoter metal cation. A strong positive correlation was found between the C5+ product selectivity and the Lewis acidity of the promoter metal cations, suggesting that the promotional effects are a consequence of Lewis acid-base interactions between the reaction intermediates and the promoter metal cations. Rate data obtained at different pressures were used to estimate the apparent rate coefficient and the CO adsorption constant appearing in the Langmuir-Hinshelwood expression that describes the CO consumption kinetics for both unpromoted and the metal oxide-promoted catalysts. Both parameters exhibited positive correlations with the promoter Lewis acidity. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the metal cations of the promoter act as Lewis acids that interact with the O atom of adsorbed CO to facilitate CO adsorption and dissociation.

The effects of Zr promotion on the structure and performance of Co-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) catalysts were investigated. Inclusion of Zr in the catalysts was found to increase the FTS turnover frequency and the selectivity to C5+ hydrocarbons and to decrease the selectivity to methane under most operating conditions. These improvements to the catalytic performance are a function of Zr loading up to an atomic ratio of Zr/Co = 1.0, above which the product selectivity is insensitive to higher concentrations of the promoter. Characterization of the Co nanoparticles by different methods demonstrated that the optimal Zr loading corresponds to half monolayer coverage of the Co surface by the promoter. Measurements of the rate of FTS at different pressures and temperatures established that the kinetics data for both the Zr-promoted and unpromoted catalysts are described by a two-parameter Langmuir-Hinshelwood expression. The parameters used to fit this rate law to the experimental data indicate that the apparent rate coefficient and the CO adsorption constant for the Zr-promoted catalysts are higher than those for the unpromoted catalyst. Elemental mapping by means of STEM-EDS provided evidence that Zr is highly dispersed over the catalyst surface and has limited preference for association with the Co nanoparticles. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirmed the absence of mixing between the Zr and Co in the nanoparticles. These results suggest that Zr exists as a partial layer of ZrO2 on the surface of the Co metal nanoparticles. Accordingly, it is proposed that Zr promotion effects originate from sites of enhanced activity at the interface between Co and ZrO2. The possibility that ZrO2 acts as a Lewis acid to assist in CO dissociation as well as to increase the ratio of CO to H adsorbed on the catalyst surface is discussed.

Mn is an effective promoter for improving the activity and selectivity of Co-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) catalysts, but the mechanism by which this promoter functions is poorly understood. The work reported here was aimed at defining the manner in which Mn interacts with Co and determining how these interactions affect the activity and selectivity of Co. Detailed measurements are reported for the kinetics of FTS as a function of Mn/Co ratio, temperature, and reactant partial pressure. These data are described by a single, two-parameter rate expression. Mn promotion was found to increase both the apparent rate constant for CO consumption and the CO adsorption constant. Further evidence for enhanced CO adsorption and dissociation was obtained from measurements of temperature-programmed desorption of CO and CO disproportionation rates, respectively. Quantitative analysis of elemental maps obtained by STEM-EDS revealed that the promoter accumulates preferentially on the surface of Co nanoparticles at low Mn loadings, resulting in a rapid onset of improvements in the product selectivity as the Mn loading increases. For catalysts prepared with loadings higher than Mn/Co = 0.1, the additional Mn accumulates in the form of nanometer-scale particles of MnO on the support. In situ IR spectra of adsorbed CO show that Mn promotion increases the abundance of adsorbed CO with weakened C-O bonds. It is proposed that the cleavage of the C-O bond is promoted through Lewis acid-base interactions between the Mn2+ cations located at the edges of MnO islands covering the Co nanoparticles and the O atom of CO adsorbates adjacent to the MnO islands. The observed decrease in selectivity to CH4 and the increased selectivity to C5+ products with increasing Mn/Co ratio are attributed to a decrease in the ratio of adsorbed H to CO on the surface of the supported Co nanoparticles.

Making connections between performance and structure in bimetallic catalysts requires knowledge of how the two elements are spatially associated. Elemental maps obtained by analytical TEM methods are an invaluable tool for identifying the location of different elements, but for many samples, visual inspection of elemental maps is insufficient for assessing the degree of element spatial correlation. This is particularly true for beam-sensitive materials where short mapping acquisition times lead to images with high noise and low color depth. In these situations, statistical analysis of elemental maps can be used to identify spatial correlations among the elements in a sample. In this work, the relationship between catalyst performance and bimetallic spatial association was explored using Mn-promoted Co-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalysts prepared by different pretreatment methods. Mn was used as a catalyst additive to suppress methane formation. Catalysts that underwent calcination before reduction produced more methane and fewer long-chain hydrocarbons than catalysts that were directly reduced. The extent to which Co and Mn were spatially associated was assessed using correlation metrics, colocation plots, and histograms generated using data from STEM-EDS maps. Although both catalysts yielded visually similar elemental maps, the results of statistical analysis suggested that the calcined catalyst exhibited greater spatial segregation between the Co and Mn. These findings support the hypothesis that having Mn in close proximity to the Co is essential for the manifestation of Mn promotion effects in Co-based FTS catalysts.

Supported Co is an effective catalyst for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of various hydrocarbon products that can be converted to diesel. Recent studies have shown that the formation of methane can be suppressed and the formation of C5+ products enhanced by promoting Co with Mn. Because the activity and product selectivity of Co-based catalysts are dependent on the size of Co nanoparticles and the extent of Co promotion by Mn, it is desirable to understand these effects by investigating the performance of Co nanoparticles with well-defined size and elemental composition. The present study was undertaken with the aim of producing well-defined nanoparticles of Co and Co-Mn and then supporting them on silica. Co and Co-Mn particles were synthesized through the polyol reduction of Co and Mn acetylacetonates. By controlling synthesis conditions, Co particles with diameters of 7-10 nm and similarly sized Co-Mn (Mn/Co=0.1) particles were prepared. XRD and elemental mapping with scanning TEM-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning TEM-electron energy loss spectroscopy studies suggested that most of the Mn species was associated with the Co particles. Ex situ prepared Co and Co-Mn nanoparticles were first supported on silica and then investigated for the catalytic activity for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The turnover frequencies and product distributions obtained with silica-supported Co and Co-Mn nanoparticles were similar to those obtained with catalysts prepared by using the conventional incipient wetness impregnation method. However, the rate of CO consumption per mass of Co was much lower for the catalysts produced by supporting ex situ prepared nanoparticles. This effect was attributed to the sintering of the nanoparticles during their calcination and reduction. Magnetic interactions among nanoparticles during their immobilization and thermal pretreatment were identified as the primary cause of sintering. Balancing yin and yang energy: The immobilization of well-defined cobalt-manganese nanoparticles on porous supports leads to the formation of Fischer-Tropsch catalysts with turnover frequencies and product selectivities comparable to those of conventionally prepared catalysts. The catalytic activity per cobalt mass is found to be significantly lower owing to sintering. Magnetic interactions among nanoparticles during immobilization and thermal pretreatment are identified as the primary cause of this phenomenon.
