22. The unique determination of density from high-order potentials

Abstract

The existence of higher-order potentials is postulated, and that the density function can be determined from this set of potentials is demonstrated. Moreover, it is shown that there is a one-to-one correspondence between such potentials and the density function, provided it is continuous. Finally, it is noted that this demonstration includes a method of constructing the density function from the set of potentials as well as indicating how to approximate the density from incomplete knowledge of the potentials.

Cost estimates for the balance-of-plant requirements associated with advanced energy conversion systems utilizing coal or coal-derived fuels are included.

Abstract

A solar activity prediction technique for monthly mean sunspot numbers over a period of approximately ten years from February 1979 to January 1989 is presented. This includes the predicted maximum epoch of solar cycle 21, approximately January 1980, and the predicted minimum epoch of solar cycle 22, approximately March 1987. Additionally, the solar radio flux 10.7 centimeter smooth values are included for the same time frame using a smooth 13 month empirical relationship. The incentive for predicting solar activity values is the requirement of solar flux data as input to upper atmosphere density models utilized in mission planning satellite orbital lifetime studies.

26. CESEMI studies of Apollo 14 and 15 fines.

Abstract

Quantitative size and shape analyses have been carried out on six lunar fines from Apollo 14 and 15 by computer evaluation of scanning electron microscope images (CESEMI). For the size range of 0.50 to 30 microns diameter, the distributions are log-normal on a number count basis. This finding is in contrast with results for coarser materials in the fines reported by King et al. suggesting the operation of a different process. Aspect ratios range from 0.1 to 1.0 with an average value of about 0.6. Only slight differences are observed among samples. A shape complexity factor (ratio of particle perimeter to ellipse perimeter) also varies only slightly among the six samples.

40. Altered turnover of allelic variants of hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase is associated with N-terminal amino acid sequence variation.

Abstract

The results of our previous studies suggested that differences in the primary structures of the hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) A and B proteins (EC 2.4.2.8) of mice are associated with altered turnover of these proteins in reticulocytes. On the basis of nucleotide sequence comparisons of their corresponding cDNAs, we show here that the HPRT A and B proteins differ at two positions; there is an alanine/proline substitution at amino acid position 2 and a valine/alanine substitution at amino acid position 29 (HPRT A/B proteins, respectively; total protein length, 218 amino acids). On the basis of results obtained from sequencing of the N termini of the purified HPRT A and B proteins, we also show that these amino acid substitutions are associated with differences in processing of the proteins; HPRT B, which is encoded as N-terminal Met-Pro, has a free N-terminal proline residue; HPRT A, which is encoded as N-terminal Met-Ala, lacks a free N-terminal alpha-amino group and is presumed to be acetylated following removal of the N-terminal methionine (i.e. AcO-Ala). These observations are discussed in reference to the idea that the N terminus of a protein plays a role in determining the rate at which the protein is degraded in erythroid cells.

Abstract

This report analyzes the cost effectiveness of electric power generation at two Navy bases using existing boilers and turbine-generator systems. This study focused on cogeneration which occurs when steam from the power generation turbine can be used to satisfy heating and process steam demands. It was found that cogeneration is the most cost effective means of electric power generation. In contrast, condensing generation is less efficient than power supply from a public utility, and it is usually more expensive. However, occasional use of condensing generation for peak shaving is warranted because it reduces the demand charge. Application of these findings at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard could save up to $800,000 per year in fuel plus electricity purchases. Capital operating and life cycle costs for new facilities show that it is not economical to install new electric power generation facilities at Navy bases if oil is used. (Author)

Abstract

Techniques have been developed for the quantitative characterization of particulate materials by computer evaluation of scanning electron microscope images (CESEMI). The full CESEMI analysis is particularily applicable to particles in the size range of 0.1 to 100 micrometers diameter. It measures, particle-by-particle, the following basic parameters: Project areas; Perimeter; Major axis of fitted ellipse; Minor axis of fitted ellipse; Orientation of major axis; and Particle type as deduced from characteristic x-ray signals for the elements. The technique is not described in detail here. On the other hand, the simple image analysis procedures have been only recently developed and are described in detail.

Abstract

The problem of being able to obtain raster profilometer traces and SEM image recording from identical fracture areas has been solved. Both types of image are now being processed by the same CESEMI computer programs for purposes of mapping of data and for quantitative enumeration of surface characteristics. The raster profilometer data tend to measure the actual long-range surface elevational detail, while the SEM images tend to bring out details of short-range surface roughness. It appears to be feasible, in the long run, to obtain SEM data comparable to raster profilometer, but this will definitely involve the use of multiple detector arrangements at the least. The derivative-signal processed images are particularly useful in viewing fracture surface detail, and it is anticipated that considerable use will be made of this kind of image detail in the future. Abstract

Techniques involving the computer processing of scanning electron microscope (SEM) images using a binary coded map approach have been developed. For each picture from one to six different SEM signals are converted from analog to digital form and recorded on magnetic tape for subsequent computer analysis. The analysis of fine grained A1203 particles and multiphase particulate mixtures are carried through from the sample preparation, the actual examination under the SEM, the digital recording of the image and finally the computer processing of the images. The computer program and the results are viewed step by step - with an explanation of the possibilities. A listing of the entire computer program is given in the Appendix. (Author)

Abstract

The report describes simulated altitude flight testing of an advanced fuel control and combustion system. The contract provides for the development of a fuel and control system that will enable a turboprop engine to operate on a wide variety of contaminated fuels. The engine testing was conducted to fulfill the functional verification requirement of the contract, and verified the capabilities of this advanced system to start and operate under simulated flight conditions using a variety of fuels. Starting tests were accomplished with specified fuels at several simulated flight speeds at altitudes of sea level, 5,000, 10,000 and 25,000 feet. Steady-state engine operational tests were also accomplished at several simulated flight speeds at altitudes of sea level, 10,000 and 25,000 feet. (Author)
