1. Industry Work Experience Leave for Faculty.

Abstract

Working leaves for faculty in two-year diploma programs provide colleges with more experienced and current faculty, provide industry with new employees or consultants with fresh ideas, and present faculty with opportunities to use up-to-date technologies and methodologies and share those experiences with students. At the University College of the Cariboo, in British Columbia, a faculty member in the Computing Information Systems diploma program arranged a work leave in spring 1995, although no formal program existed at the college. First, the instructor contacted area firms employing large numbers of Information Systems workers, receiving offers from two firms, and received approval from the college for a 1-semester leave at 50% pay. The leave was then arranged with a large supplier of wood and paper products, with the firm covering the remaining 50% of the instructor's salary. The instructor spent the first 8 weeks of the leave researching and documenting the company's existing information system, while the remaining time was spent developing a new system for tracking work done by the company's Business Information Systems division. Finally, although the leave cost the college $6,000, it provided significant benefits. The instructor gained new skills and familiarity with new processes and used this knowledge to develop a Natural Resource Science course for fall 1995. (TGI)

5. MANAGEMENT CONSIDERATIONS FOR STINK BUGS - 2003.

Abstract

Because stink bugs continue to pose a challenge to current and future efforts concerning cotton insect management, we continued investigations into alternative monitoring strategies and management tactics for the pest complex. Pheromone trapping of stink bugs was again useful in following in-field populations of stink bugs, but the reduced availability and considerable expense of currently available lures and unavailability of lures for other important species continues to make potential pheromone trapping prohibitive. Research with treatment thresholds for stink bugs, based on monitoring internal feeding injury to bolls, supported treatment at the 10-20% injury to mid-sized (ca. 14-d-old) bolls. In laboratory bioassays concerning insecticide efficacy, methyl parathion (Methyl 4E) and dicrotophos (Bidrin 8), standard organophosphates used for control of bug pests, provided superior control (94-100% mortality) of field-collected fifth instars and adults of the green stink bug (GSB), Acrosternum hilare (Say) and the brown stink bug (BSB), Euschistus servus (Say), at 0.5 lb (AI)/A. Pyrethroid insecticides alone provided variable results (11-100% 24-hr mortality) due to considerable tolerance by BSB. Results from studies addressing simulated mechanical injury to bolls, terminals, and squares suggested that losses from bug feeding injury to young cotton and to small-to-medium-sized bolls could be significant under certain circumstances. In caging experiments, the ability of GSB to damage cotton bolls and reduce yield decreased as bolls aged, and yields from bolls that accumulated 583 HU at 27 d following anthesis were not significantly reduced. 9. Vector EOF Analysis of SSH and Wind Stress for the GEOSAT Pre-ERM mission in the Gulf of Mexico

Abstract

Sea Surface Height (SSH) data collected during the Pre-exact Repeat Mission of the U.S. Navy's GEOSAT satellite were analyzed together with wind stress data from FNOC to determine basin scale patterns of coherent variability. Time series of SSH variations were formed from altimeter cross-over points in 3- degree diamond-shaped grids in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Similarly, wind stress time series were formed at selected grid points in the GOM and in the North Equatorial Trade wind region of the Atlantic. The two sets of time series, one year in length, were subjected to Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis. The first EOF mode contained more than twice the variance of the second mode, with the largest amplitudes (sigenvectors) of the pattern occurring just west of the loop current intrusion for SSH and in the western and northern Gulf for wind stress. A comparison is made with similar combined data for the Northern Indian Ocean where ocean response to Monsoon winds is strong, and better understood. In addition to the EOF analysis, events are followed through the Gulf in both wind and SSH records.
