Abstract

Seasonal windows of opportunity are intervals within a year that provide improved prospects for growth, survival, or reproduction. However, few studies have sufficient temporal resolution to examine how multiple factors combine to constrain the seasonal timing and extent of developmental opportunities. Here, we document seasonal changes in milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis)-monarch (Danaus plexippus) interactions with high resolution throughout the last three breeding seasons prior to a precipitous single-year decline in the western monarch population. Our results show early- and late-season windows of opportunity for monarch recruitment that were constrained by different combinations of factors. Early-season windows of opportunity were characterized by high egg densities and low survival on a select subset of host plants, consistent with the hypothesis that early-spring migrant female monarchs select earlier-emerging plants to balance a seasonal trade-off between increasing host plant quantity and decreasing host plant quality. Late-season windows of opportunity were coincident with the initiation of host plant senescence, and caterpillar success was negatively correlated with heatwave exposure, consistent with the hypothesis that late-season windows were constrained by plant defense traits and thermal stress. Throughout this study, climatic and microclimatic variations played a foundational role in the timing and success of monarch developmental windows by affecting bottom-up, top-down, and abiotic limitations. More exposed microclimates were associated with higher developmental success during cooler conditions, and more shaded microclimates were associated with higher developmental success during warmer conditions, suggesting that habitat heterogeneity could buffer the effects of climatic variation. Together, these findings show an important dimension of seasonal change in milkweed-monarch interactions and illustrate how different biotic and abiotic factors can limit the developmental success of monarchs across the breeding season. These results also suggest the potential for seasonal sequences of favorable or unfavorable conditions across the breeding range to strongly affect monarch population dynamics.

Abstract

Bipedal trackways discovered in 1978 at Laetoli site G, Tanzania and dated to 3.66 million years ago are widely accepted as the oldest unequivocal evidence of obligate bipedalism in the human lineage.sup.1-3. Another trackway discovered two years earlier at nearby site A was partially excavated and attributed to a hominin, but curious affinities with bears (ursids) marginalized its importance to the paleoanthropological community, and the location of these footprints fell into obscurity.sup.3-5. In 2019, we located, excavated and cleaned the site A trackway, producing a digital archive using 3D photogrammetry and laser scanning. Here we compare the footprints at this site with those of American black bears, chimpanzees and humans, and we show that they resemble those of hominins more than ursids. In fact, the narrow step width corroborates the original interpretation of a small, cross-stepping bipedal hominin. However, the inferred foot proportions, gait parameters and 3D morphologies of footprints at site A are readily distinguished from those at site G, indicating that a minimum of two hominin taxa with different feet and gaits coexisted at Laetoli. Reanalysis of bipedal trackways from Laetoli site A in Tanzania suggest that the footprints were made by a hominin that coexisted with at least one other hominin species., Author(s): Ellison J. Abstract

Who presents at conferences matters. Presenting research benefits speakers, and presenters shape the conclusions audiences draw about who can succeed in a field. This is particularly important for members of historically underrepresented or disadvantaged groups, such as women. We investigated gender representation over a 13-year period among speakers at the largest social and personality psychology conference. On average, women were underrepresented as speakers, though this effect diminished over time. Chairs appeared to serve as gatekeepers: In symposia chaired by women, almost half of the invited speakers were women, whereas in symposia chaired by men, it was a third. The representation of women as speakers varied significantly by academic rank, with women underrepresented at lower ranks but not as full professors, and by topic. Women also tended to present with a smaller, less varied array of individuals than men, though this could be explained by women's lower average academic rank.

The described activity enables students to experience communication at different levels of richness (e.g., face to face, instant messaging, email) and with varying levels of feedback and noise. After completing the activity, students will understand the importance of precise, rich messages, seeking and providing feedback, and the difficulties that can occur at every step in communication.

Abstract

The objective was to examine the interactive effects of load magnitude and locomotion pattern on lower-extremity joint angles and intralimb coordination in recruit-aged women. Twelve women walked, ran, and forced marched at body weight and with loads of +25%, and +45% of body weight on an instrumented treadmill with infrared cameras. Joint angles were assessed in the sagittal plane. Intralimb coordination of the thigh–shank and shank–foot couple was assessed with continuous relative phase. Mean absolute relative phase (entire stride) and deviation phase (stance phase) were calculated from continuous relative phase. At heel strike, forced marching exhibited greater (P <.001) hip flexion, knee extension, and ankle plantar flexion compared with running. At mid-stance, knee flexion (P =.007) and ankle dorsiflexion (P =.04) increased with increased load magnitude for all locomotion patterns. Forced marching (P =.009) demonstrated a "stiff-legged" locomotion pattern compared with running, evidenced by the more in-phase mean absolute relative phase values. Running (P =.03) and walking (P =.003) had greater deviation phase than forced marching. Deviation phase increased for running (P =.03) and walking (P <.001) with increased load magnitude but not for forced marching. With loads of >25% of body weight, forced marching may increase risk of injury due to inhibited energy attenuation up the kinetic chain and lack of variability to disperse force across different supportive structures. 39. Socioeconomic Status- and Gender-Based Differences in Students' Perceptions of E-Learning Systems

Abstract

Many universities are pursuing increases in on-line course offerings as a means of offsetting the rising costs of providing high-quality educational opportunities and of better serving their student populations. However, enrollments in online courses are not always sufficient to cover their costs. One possible way of improving enrollments is through marketing campaigns targeted to specific demographic groups. In this study, we take a first look into how students' perceptions of e-learning systems, prior to their enrollment in an online course, vary across socioeconomic status and gender. Findings suggest that prior to taking an online course, working-class students perceive e-learning systems more positively than their middle-class peers but that little difference exists between genders. Armed with this knowledge, universities may improve online course enrollments by marketing online courses specifically to working-class students or through campaigns aimed at improving middle-class students' perceptions of e-learning systems.

Objetivo: evaluar el conocimiento, actitudes y creencias deguayaneses con diabetes tipo 2 sobre el síndrome coronarioagudo y explorar la asociación entre esas mediciones y lascaracterísticas sociodemográficas y clínicas de esa población.Método: estudio transversal realizado en Linden, Guayana, consesenta diabéticos tipo 2 entrevistados usando un cuestionariosociodemográfico y clínico y el Acute Coronary Syndrome-ACS Response Index. El test Mann-Whitney fue usado paraverificar posibles diferencias entre grupos de acuerdo con lassubescalas del ACS-Response Index y sexo, edad, tiempo dediagnóstico, e índice de masa corporal, y el test Kruskal-Wallispara comparar las subescalas del ACS-Response Index y el nivelde escolaridad. Resultados: dos participantes respondieroncorrectamente más de 70% de las preguntas de la subescalaConocimiento. Los participantes obtuvieron bajas puntuacionesen todas las escalas. Menos de la mitad respondieron que eldolor en el pecho y brazo son síntomas de ataque cardíaco.Diferencias significativas fueron encontradas entre el nivelde Conocimiento (p=0.008) y Actitudes (p=0.009) y deescolaridad. Conclusión: diabéticos tipo 2 presentaron bajonivel de Conocimiento, Actitudes y Creencias. Los participantescon puntuaciones más altas en las subescalas conocimientos yactitudes tuvieron nivel educacional más alto. 43. Is Journal Writing an Effective Method of Reducing Anxiety Towards Statistics?

Abstract

Journal writing was utilized by a group of undergraduate students in their statistics course. Performance, attitudes, and anxiety toward the course were compared with a control group. Results showed that students who kept a journal showed improvement in their grades, lower anxiety before exams, and lower physiological reactions. (JAK)

Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of Guyanese individuals with type 2 diabetes regarding acute coronary syndrome and explore associations between these measures and the population’s sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Method: cross-sectional study conducted in Linden, Guyana, with sixty type 2 diabetics, interviewed using a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire and the Acute Coronary Syndrome-Response Index. The Mann-Whitney test was used to assess potential differences between groups according to the ACS-Response Index subscales, and sex, age, time since diabetes diagnosis, and body mass index and the Kruskal-Wallis test to compare the ACS-Response Index subscales according to educational level. Results: only two participants correctly answered more than 70% of the Knowledge subscale. Participants obtained low mean scores in all subscales. Less than half of the participants reported chest pain and arm pain as symptoms of heart attack. Significant differences were found when comparing Knowledge (p=0.008) and Attitudes (p=0.009) according to educational level. Conclusion: individuals with type 2 diabetes showed low level of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs. Participants who scored the highest in Knowledge and Attitudes presented the highest educational level. The results show a need for health professionals to heed knowledge deficits regarding acute coronary syndrome among type 2 diabetes. Objetivo: evaluar el conocimiento, actitudes y creencias de guayaneses con diabetes tipo 2 sobre el síndrome coronario agudo y explorar la asociación entre esas mediciones y las características sociodemográficas y clínicas de esa población. Método: estudio transversal realizado en Linden, Guayana, con sesenta diabéticos tipo 2 entrevistados usando un cuestionario sociodemográfico y clínico y el Acute Coronary Syndrome-ACS Response Index. El test Mann-Whitney fue usado para verificar posibles diferencias entre grupos de acuerdo con las subescalas del ACS-Response Index y sexo, edad, tiempo de diagnóstico, e índice de masa corporal, y el test Kruskal-Wallis para comparar las subescalas del ACS-Response Index y el nivel de escolaridad. Resultados: dos participantes respondieron correctamente más de 70% de las preguntas de la subescala Conocimiento. Los participantes obtuvieron bajas puntuaciones en todas las escalas. Menos de la mitad respondieron que el dolor en el pecho y brazo son síntomas de ataque cardíaco.
