1. Future Student Support Programs: Distinction or Extinction?

Abstract

This chapter reviews changes for the future of student support programs identified and addressed by other contributing authors. It is proposed that without a blueprint of how the fields of school counseling, psychology, nursing, social work, and other student support programs will change to address the future, extinction is guaranteed. Changes already occurring that affect the student support programs of the future are highlighted. These include changes in the areas of local communities; computer technology; family structures; educational organization; the economy; and models of leadership. Finally, realignments of available resources must be evaluated on an ongoing basis to ensure the paradigms being used are delivering planned-for results in terms of academic achievement and wellness program implementation. Abstract

This publication brings together authors from a variety of fields to speculate about the future of counseling. Some believe that change in the future will be incremental and of a short-term nature, resolving problems as they arise. 3. CENTRAL (INTRAOSSEOUS) MUCOEPI DERMOID CARCINOMA: A RARE CASE REPORT.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Almost 60% of mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MEC) are found in salivary glands, and 2-4% of all mucoepidermoid carcinomas are intraosseous (central) mucoepidermoid carcinomas (CMC). The treatment for these is most frequently surgical resection with long-term follow-up.10 OBJECTIVES: The primary objective in this case is to obtain a differential diagnosis. Based upon the clinical and pathological features observed, to then arrive at a diagnosis. METHODS: This case utilized microscopic examination with clinical and radiographic correlation to reach a definitive diagnosis that led to appropriate treatment. After an initial patient examination, an immediate referral was determined to be Indicated. An incisional biopsy was performed, which included the gingival lesion and the enucleated mass. RESULTS: The tumor consisted of solid and cystic components. Histologically appearing mucous cells were confirmed to be mucicarmine positive. Surgical treatment consisted of tumor removal, jaw resection, and neck dissection. Plastic surgery included bone graft utilizing the right fibula. Radiation therapy followed at two weeks. Seven months post-surgery, the patient was seen for dental treatment and prosthetic placement. CONCLUSION: Five years and 5 months post-surgery, the patient was seen at the dental school for reevaluation. She reported no recurrence of the tumor at that time; however, she complained of residual, lingering discomfort, tongue numbness and deviation, and neck stiffness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

5. Blood: Tests Used to Assess the Physiological and Immunological Properties of Blood

Abstract

The properties of blood and the relative ease of access to which it can be retrieved make it an ideal source to gauge different aspects of homeostasis within an individual, form an accurate diagnosis, and formulate an appropriate treatment regime. Tests used to determine blood parameters such as the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, bleeding and clotting times, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, mean cell volume, and determination of blood groups are routinely used clinically, and deviations outside the normal range can indicate a range of conditions such as anemia, pregnancy, dehydration, overhydration, infectious disease, cancer, thyroid disease, and autoimmune conditions, to mention a few. As these tests can be performed relatively inexpensively and do not require high levels of technical expertise, they are ideally suited for use in the teaching laboratory, enabling undergraduate students to link theory to practice. The practicals described here permit students to examine their own blood and that of their peers and compare these with clinically accepted normal ranges. At the end of the practicals, students are required to answer a number of questions about their findings and to link abnormal values to possible pathological conditions by answering a series of questions based on their findings.

22. An Internship Program for Technical Vocational Teachers in Post-Secondary Schools. Final Report.

Abstract

This report describes a project to develop an internship program for prospective technical and vocational community college teachers providing both requisite teaching skills and work experience through actual classroom exposure, while allowing an on-the-job evaluation of the prospective teachers. To develop the program, a pilot internship project was conducted in the 1972-1973 school year by the University of Houston and seven area community colleges. Specific requirements for a working internship program as well as the pilot project structure are presented in the report. Program evaluation was made by the participating colleges and by the internship students. Both unanimously approved the program as valuable to the prospective teacher and to the college in which the internship occurs. For the intern the program provides an opportunity to observe an experienced teacher and to apply classroom instruction methods, while benefiting the college by helping the college instructor. It was concluded that an internship program should be established as a regular part of the Texas educational system. A second pilot project was recommended for the 1973-74 school year to complete development of the internship program. (MF)

23. The Existentialist Counselor at Work.

Abstract

This paper presents the author's experience of Existentialism and its relationship to the counseling process. The basic concepts of the philosophy are presented, described in terms of personal experience, then translated into operational behavior, with the focus on the development of the Existentialist oriented public-school counseling center. These concepts are used to delineate the scope of Existentialism in counseling: (1) Existence Precedes Essence, the need for a personal experience of definition and creation of one's self, (2) Man Is Condemned To Freedom, the necessity of personal responsibility for one's self and choices, (3) When Man Chooses, He Chooses for All Men, that personal choices define the ideal man and affirm the values of what is chosen, and (4) Man Defines Himself Through His Actions and Only Through His Actions, that what a person does reflects his essence, not what he intends or wishes.
