The political nature of any organization, coupled with the complexity of the health care delivery environment, requires a deliberate approach to establishing a comprehensive program. A successful developmental effort frequently is defined as one that produces a deliverable that is satisfactory to the client, on time, within budget, and has had no adverse impact on ongoing business operations. This article describes through a case study approach the activities that one project used to ensure a successful development effort. The author advocates a hybrid methodological approach to systems analysis and design that is tailored for the specific project. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation is a promising non-invasive technique for characterizing solid-liquid interactions within functional porous materials. However, the ability of the solid-liquid interface to enhance adsorbate relaxation rates, known as the surface relaxivity, in the case of different solvents and reagents involved in various chemical processes has yet to be evaluated in a quantitative manner. In this study, we systematically explore the surface relaxation characteristics of 10 liquid adsorbates (cyclohexane, acetone, water, and 7 alcohols, including ethylene glycol) confined within mesoporous silicas with pore sizes between 6 and 50 nm using low-field (12.7 MHz) two-dimensional 1 H T 1 - T 2 relaxation measurements. Functional-group-specific relaxation phenomena associated with the alkyl and hydroxyl groups of the confined alcohols are clearly distinguished; we report the dependence of both longitudinal ( T 1 ) and transverse ( T 2 ) relaxation rates of these 1 H-bearing moieties on pore surface-to-volume ratio, facilitating the quantification and assignment of surface relaxivity values to specific functional groups within the same adsorbate molecule for the first time. We further demonstrate that alkyl group transverse surface relaxivities correlate strongly with the alkyl/hydroxyl ratio of the adsorbates assessed, providing evidence for a simple, quantitative relationship between surface relaxivity and interfacial chemistry. Overall, our observations highlight potential pitfalls in the application of NMR relaxation for the evaluation of pore size distributions using hydroxylated probe molecules, and provide motivation for the exploration of nuclear spin relaxation measurements as a route to adsorbate identity within functional porous materials.

The escalating presence of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater necessitates the investigation of effective tertiary treatment process. Forward osmosis (FO) emerges as an effective non-pressurized membrane process, however, for the effective implementation of FO systems, the development of fouling-resistance FO membranes with high-performance is essential. This study focuses on the integration of MWCNT/UiO-66-NH 2 as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) nanocomposites in thin film composite (TFC) FO membranes, harnessing the synergistic power of hybrid nanoparticles in FO membranes. The results showed that the addition of MWCNT/UiO-66-NH 2 in the aqueous phase during polyamide formation changed the polyamide surface structure, and enhanced membranes' hydrophilicity by 44%. The water flux of the modified FO membrane incorporated with 0.1 wt% MWCNTs/UiO-66-NH 2 increased by 67% and the reverse salt flux decreased by 22% as in comparison with the control membrane. Moreover, the modified membrane showed improved antifouling behavior against both organic foulant and MPs. The MWCNT/UiO-66-NH 2 membrane experienced 35% flux decline while the control membrane experienced 65% flux decline. Dewatering of anaerobic digestate from red meat processing was assessed using low field MRI profiling and NMR relaxometry. Samples were flocculated using a cationic flocculant (EM640CT) at dosing range (0 to 1.6% v/v) and monitored during the initial 30 min of settling via MRI profiling to assess changes in water fraction, settling time and initial settling velocity. The profiles showed decreasing settling time and increasing initial settling velocity with increased dosing, while sample porosity was observed to increase up to the optimal dosing point (0.8% v/v). Significant increases in sample variability were observed past this point due to flocculant overdosing. The samples were then analysed in terms of turbidity and NMR relaxometry. Increasing flocculant concentration caused turbidity to decrease from 210 to 13 NTU. The relaxation rate of free water showed a strong positive correlation with turbidity. T 2 peaks observed before overdosing could be assigned to different water structures (free, interstitial, vicinal and hydration). An additional T 2 population emerged in the T 2 distributions at the optimal dosing point. Multivariate exploratory data analysis (MEDA) showed that this T 2 population from the solids layer was strongly correlated with the total solids layer height and turbidity of the watery layer. This T 2 peak formation may therefore be used to study opaque flocculated solids to monitor for water structures associated with flocculant overdosing. Purpose: The purpose of this case report is to describe spasticity and encephalopathy that developed in a multiple sclerosis patient following carbapenem administration. Summary: A 55-year-old female with multiple sclerosis developed spasticity and encephalopathy within 24 hours of meropenem and ertapenem administration. This was the second time that she had developed encephalopathy following carbapenem administration. The patient gradually recovered over four days following discontinuation of carbapenem therapy. Conclusion: Carbapenem neurotoxicity, a well-documented adverse effect, has been linked to several risk factors, including central nervous system lesions. Despite this, there is little evidence describing the risk of neurotoxicity in patients with multiple sclerosis. It is important to understand the potential adverse effects of carbapenems in specific patient populations to help guide appropriate treatment of infections.

Natural gas containing trace amounts of water is frequently liquefied at conditions where aqueous solids are thermodynamically stable. However, no data are available to describe the kinetics of aqueous solid formation at these conditions. Here, we present experimental measurements of both solid formation kinetics and solid-fluid equilibrium for trace concentrations of (12 ± 0.7) ppm water in methane using a stirred, high-pressure apparatus and visual microscopy. Along isochoric pathways with cooling rates around 1 K·min -1 , micron-scale aqueous solids were observed to form at subcoolings of (0.3-8.6) K, relative to an average equilibrium melting temperature of (253 ± 1.9) K at (8.9 ± 0.08) MPa; these data are consistent with predicted methane hydrate dissociation conditions within the uncertainty of both the experiment and model. The 36 measured formation events were used to construct a cumulative formation probability distribution, which was then fitted with a model from Classical Nucleation Theory, enabling the extraction of kinetic and thermodynamic nucleation parameters. While the resulting nucleation parameter values were comparable to those published for methane hydrate formation in bulk-water systems, the observed growth kinetics were distinctly different with only a small percentage of the water in the system converting into micron-scale solids over the experimental time scale. These results may help explain how cryogenic heat exchangers in liquefied natural gas facilities can operate for long periods without blockages forming despite being at very high subcoolings for aqueous solids.

High magnetic field NMR spectroscopy featuring the use of superconducting magnets is a powerful analytical technique for the detection of honey adulteration. Such high field NMR systems are, however, typically housed in specialised laboratories, require cryogenic coolants, and necessitate specialist training to operate. Benchtop NMR spectrometers featuring permanent magnets are, by comparison, significantly cheaper, more mobile and can be operated with minimal expertise. The lower magnetic fields used in such systems, however, result in limited spectral resolution, which diminishes their ability to perform quantitative composition analysis. These limitations may be overcome by implementing a recently developed field-invariant model-based fitting method which is defined by the underlying quantum mechanical properties of the nuclear spin system; this method is applied here to quantify the sugar composition of honey using benchtop 1 H NMR (43 MHz) spectroscopy. The detection of adulteration of 26 honey samples with brown rice syrup is quantitatively demonstrated to a minimum adulterant concentration of 5 wt%. Honey adulteration with corn syrup, glucose syrup and wheat syrup was also quantitatively detected using this approach. Our NMR detection of adulteration was shown to be invariant with time over 60 days of storage.

We demonstrate an unexpected decay-recovery behavior in the time-dependent ^{1}H NMR relaxation times of water confined within a hydrating porous material. Our observations are rationalized by considering the combined effects of decreasing material pore size and evolving interfacial chemistry, which facilitate a transition between surface-limited and diffusion-limited relaxation regimes. Such behavior necessitates the realization of temporally evolving surface relaxivity, highlighting potential caveats in the classical interpretation of NMR relaxation data obtained from complex porous systems.

In this study non-invasive low field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology was used to monitor fouling induced changes in fiber-by-fiber hydrodynamics inside a multi-fiber hollow fiber membrane module containing 401 fibers. Using structural and velocity images the fouling evolution of these membrane modules were shown to exhibit distinct trends in fiber-by-fiber volumetric flow, with increasing fouling causing a decrease in the number of flow active fibers. This study shows that the fouling rate is not evenly distributed over the parallel fibers, which results in a broadening of the fiber to fiber flowrate distribution. During cleaning, this distribution is initially broadened further, as relatively clean fibers are cleaned more rapidly compared to clogged fibers. By tracking the volumetric flow rate of individual fibers inside the modules during the fouling-cleaning cycle it was possible to observe a fouling memory-like effect with residual fouling occurring preferentially at the outer edge of the fiber bundle during repeated fouling-cleaning cycle. Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants that are abundantly present in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Forward osmosis (FO) is an advanced treatment technology with potential applications in WWTPs. The presence of MPs in WWTP effluents can contribute to FO fouling and performance deterioration. This study focuses on FO membrane fouling by MPs of different sizes, and the interactional impacts of MPs and Humic acid (HA) (as the most common organic foulant in WWTPs) on FO membrane performance. The synergistic effect of combined MPs and HA fouling is shown to cause higher flux decline for FO membranes than that of HA or MPs alone. Reverse salt flux increased in the presence of MPs, and decreased when HA was present. Further, full flux recovery was obtained for all fouled membranes after hydraulic cleaning. This indicates the efficiency of FO systems for treating wastewater with high fouling potential. This study highlights the necessity of considering MPs in studying fouling behaviour, and for mitigation strategies of membranes used in WWT. The motional dynamics of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging tools can significantly influence the measurement performance of such tools. NMR logging is used for geophysical evaluation in geological environments, primarily quantifying formation porosity and fluid volumes, as well as providing a qualitative estimation of permeability. NMR logging tools are conveyed via two main mechanisms; wireline logging and logging while drilling (LWD). We conduct detailed simulations to quantify the impact of tool motion on NMR measurements during logging. This involves conducting electromagnetic simulations which quantify the magnetic fields generated by a logging tool, and subsequently introducing motion profiles within the relevant spin dynamic calculations. This enables tool motional dynamics to be imposed on the signal acquisition. Several movement profiles are considered: linear axial movement to replicate wireline logging tool motion, as well as axial harmonic and lateral harmonic movement to simulate the shocks and vibrations experienced during logging while drilling. Lateral motion is observed to cause a greater degree of signal attenuation relative to axial motion due to the cylindrical shape of the excited volume. The magnitude of motion (e.g. the velocity of linear motion or the amplitude of harmonic motion) is demonstrated to increase the severity of signal attenuation, as expected. However, the frequency of harmonic motion demonstrates a more complex effect on the measured signal. The harmonic interaction between the motion frequency and measurement frequency (determined by the echo spacing) can cause wave interference which results in enhanced or diminished signal attenuation. Finally, we demonstrate that reducing both the magnetic field gradient as well as the echo spacing reduce the degree of signal attenuation observed during measurement. Understanding the behaviour of short-chain hydrocarbons confined to porous solids informs the targeted extraction of natural resources from geological features, and underpins rational developments in separation, storage and catalytic conversion processes. Herein, we report the application of low-field (12.7 MHz) 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation measurements to characterise ethane dynamics within mesoporous silica materials exhibiting mean pore diameters between 6 and 50 nm. Our measurements provide NMR-based adsorption isotherms within the range 25-50 bar and at ambient temperature, incorporating the ethane condensation point (40.7 bar at our experimental temperature of 23.6 °C). The quantitative nature of the acquired data is validated via a direct comparison of NMR-derived excess adsorption capacities with ex situ gravimetric ethane adsorption measurements, which are demonstrated to agree to within 0.2 mmol g -1 of the observed ethane capacity. NMR T 2 relaxation time distributions are further demonstrated as a means to decouple interparticle and mesopore dominated adsorption phenomena, with unexpectedly rapid relaxation rates associated with interparticle ethane gas confirmed via a direct comparison with NMR self-diffusion analysis., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The application of membrane technology for water treatment and reuse is hampered by the development of a microbial biofilm. Biofilm growth in micro-and ultrafiltration (MF/UF) membrane modules, on both the membrane surface and feed spacer, can form a secondary membrane and exert resistance to permeation and crossflow, increasing energy demand and decreasing permeate quantity and quality. In recent years, exhaustive efforts were made to understand the chemical, structural and hydraulic characteristics of membrane biofilms. In this review, we critically assess which specific structural features of membrane biofilms exert resistance to forced water passage in MF/UF membranes systems applied to water and wastewater treatment, and how biofilm physical structure can be engineered by process operation to impose less hydraulic resistance ("below-the-pain threshold"). Counter-intuitively, biofilms with greater thickness do not always cause a higher hydraulic resistance than thinner biofilms. Dense biofilms, however, had consistently higher hydraulic resistances compared to less dense biofilms. The mechanism by which density exerts hydraulic resistance is reported in the literature to be dependant on the biofilms' internal packing structure and EPS chemical composition (e.g., porosity, polymer concentration). Current reports of internal porosity in membrane biofilms are not supported by adequate experimental evidence or by a reliable methodology, limiting a unified understanding of biofilm internal structure. Identifying the dependency of hydraulic resistance on biofilm density invites efforts to control the hydraulic resistance of membrane biofilms by engineering internal biofilm structure. Regulation of biofilm internal structure is possible by alteration of key determinants such as feed water nutrient composition/concentration, hydraulic shear stress and resistance and can engineer biofilm structural development to decrease density and therein hydraulic resistance. Future efforts should seek to determine the extent to which the concept of "biofilm engineering" can be extended to other biofilm parameters such as mechanical stability and the implication for biofilm control/removal in engineered water systems (e.g., pipelines and/or, cooling towers) susceptible to biofouling., (Crown Copyright © 2021. Solid-fluid interactions underpin the efficacy of functional porous materials across a diverse array of chemical reaction and separation processes. However, detailed characterization of interfacial phenomena within such systems is hampered by their optically opaque nature. Motivated by the need to bridge this capability gap, we report low-magnetic-field two-dimensional (2D) 1 H nuclear spin relaxation measurements as a noninvasive probe of adsorbate identity and interfacial dynamics, exploring the relaxation characteristics exhibited by liquid hydrocarbon adsorbates confined to a model mesoporous silica. For the first time, we demonstrate the capacity of this approach in distinguishing functional group-specific relaxation phenomena across a diverse range of alcohols and carboxylic acids employed as solvents, reagents, and liquid hydrogen carriers, with distinct relaxation responses assigned to the alkyl and hydroxyl moieties of each confined liquid. Uniquely, this relaxation behavior is shown to correlate with adsorbate acidity, with the observed relationship rationalized on the basis of surface-adsorbate proton-exchange dynamics. Our results demonstrate that nuclear spin relaxation provides a molecular-level perspective on sorbent/sorbate interactions, motivating the exploration of such measurements as a unique probe of adsorbate identity within optically opaque porous media.

The emergence and accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in various aquatic environments have recently raised significant concerns. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been identified as one of the major sources of MPs discharge to the environment, implying a substantial need to improve advanced techniques for more efficient removal of MPs. Polymeric membranes have been proven effective in MPs removal. However, fouling is the main drawback of membrane processes and MPs can foul the membranes due to their small size and specific surface properties. Hence, it is important to investigate the impacts of MPs on membrane fouling to develop efficient membrane-based techniques for MPs removal. Although membrane technologies have a high potential for MPs removal, the interaction of MPs with membranes and their fouling effects have not been critically reviewed. The purpose of this paper is to provide a state-of-the-art review of MPs interaction with membranes and facilitate a better understanding of the relevant limitations and prospects of the membrane technologies. The first section of this paper is dedicated to a review of recent studies on MPs occurrence in WWTPs aiming to determine the most frequent MPs. This is followed by a summary of recent studies on MPs removal using membranes and discussions on the impact of MPs on membrane fouling and other probable issues (abrasion, concentration polarisation, biofouling, etc.). Finally, some recommendations for further research in this area are highlighted. Objectives: The primary endpoint was to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the bronchoalveolar lavage Gram stain in predicting culture results. Secondary endpoints included determining the proportion of Gram stains from bronchoalveolar lavages that accurately identify culture isolates and the duration of antibiotic treatment before bronchoalveolar lavage collection., Design: Retrospective, observational study., Setting: Four ICUs at a single academic medical center., Subjects: Patients at least 18 years old admitted to an ICU with a diagnosis of pneumonia, collection of a bronchoalveolar lavage sample, and receipt of antibiotics., Measurements and Main Results: Two-hundred five isolates were included. Gram stains for Gram-positive and Gram-negative isolates showed high specificity, 97.3% and 100%, respectively, but lower sensitivity at 61.9% and 54.2%, respectively. The positive predictive value and negative predictive value were 77.2% and 95.7% for Gram-positive isolates and 100% and 84.4% for Gram-negative isolates, respectively. A novel magnetic resonance measurement (MRM) protocol for non-invasive monitoring of fouling in spiral wound reverse osmosis (SWRO) membrane modules is demonstrated. Sodium alginate was used to progressively foul a commercial SWRO membrane at industrially relevant operating conditions in a circulating flow loop. The MRM protocol showcased the following: (i) earlier, more sensitive detection and quantification of fouling in the membrane module compared to feed-channel pressure drop. This was achieved using appropriate detection of the total nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal. (ii) 2D cross-sectional imaging of the location of the accumulated foulant material; this was preferentially located adjacent to the membrane spacer sheet nodes, which was subsequently confirmed by a module autopsy. This image contrast, which could also readily differentiate the membrane, feed spacer and permeate spacer regions, was realised based on differences in the NMR relaxation parameter, T 2,eff . (iii) High frequency acquisition of 2D cross-sectional velocity images of the module revealing very localised flow channelling in response to gradual foulant accumulation which impacted significantly on the flow pattern within the central permeate tube. Background: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), including MMP-9, are an integral part of the immune response and are upregulated in response to a variety of stimuli. New details continue to emerge concerning the mechanistic and regulatory pathways that mediate MMP-9 secretion. There is significant evidence for regulation of inflammation by dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), thus investigation of how these two molecules may regulate both MMP-9 and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) secretion by human monocytes was of high interest. The hypothesis tested in this study was that DMSO and cAMP regulate MMP-9 and TNFα secretion by distinct mechanisms., Aim: To investigate the regulation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated MMP-9 and tumor necrosis factor α secretion in THP-1 human monocytes by dimethyl sulfoxide and cAMP., Methods: The paper describes a basic research study using THP-1 human monocyte cells. All experiments were conducted at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Human monocyte cells were grown, cultured, and prepared for experiments in the University of Missouri-St. Louis Cell Culture Facility as per accepted guidelines. Cells were treated with LPS for selected exposure times and the conditioned medium was collected for analysis of MMP-9 and TNFα production. Inhibitors including DMSO, cAMP regulators, and anti-TNFα antibody were added to the cells prior to LPS treatment. MMP-9 secretion was analyzed by gel electrophoresis/western blot and quantitated by ImageJ software. TNFα secretion was analyzed by enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay. All data is presented as the average and standard error for at least 3 trials. Statistical analysis was done using a two-tailed paired Student t -test. P values less than 0.05 were considered significant and designated as such in the Figures. LPS and cAMP regulators were from Sigma-Aldrich, MMP-9 standard and antibody and TNFα antibodies were from R&D Systems, and amyloid-β peptide was from rPeptide., Results: In our investigation of MMP-9 secretion from THP-1 human monocytes, we made the following findings. Inclusion of DMSO in the cell treatment inhibited LPS-induced MMP-9, but not TNFα, secretion. Inclusion of DMSO in the cell treatment at different concentrations inhibited LPS-induced MMP-9 secretion in a dose-dependent fashion. A cell-permeable cAMP analog, dibutyryl cAMP, inhibited both LPS-induced MMP-9 and TNFα secretion. Pretreatment of the cells with the adenylyl cyclase activator forskolin inhibited LPS-induced MMP-9 and TNFα secretion. Pretreatment of the cells with the general cAMP phosphodiesterase inhibitor IBMX reduced LPS-induced MMP-9 and TNFα in a dose-dependent fashion. Pre-treatment of monocytes with an anti-TNFα antibody blocked LPS-induced MMP-9 and TNFα secretion. Amyloid-β peptide induced MMP-9 secretion, which occurred much later than TNFα secretion. The latter two findings strongly suggested an upstream role for TNFα in mediating LPS-stimulate MMP-9 secretion., Conclusion: The cumulative data indicated that MMP-9 secretion was a distinct process from TNFα secretion and occurred downstream. First, DMSO inhibited MMP-9, but not TNFα, suggesting that the MMP-9 secretion process was selectively altered. Second, cAMP inhibited both MMP-9 and TNFα with a similar potency, but at different monocyte cell exposure time points. The pattern of cAMP inhibition for these two molecules suggested that MMP-9 secretion lies downstream of TNFα and that TNFα may a key component of the pathway leading to MMP-9 secretion. Purpose of Review: Rapidly evolving treatment paradigms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) introduce challenges for clinicians to keep up with the pace of published literature and to critically appraise the voluminous data produced. This review summarizes the clinical evidence from key studies examining the place of therapy of recommended drugs and management strategies for COVID-19., Recent Findings: The global magnitude and duration of the pandemic have resulted in a flurry of interventional treatment trials evaluating both novel and repurposed drugs targeting various aspects of the viral life cycle. Additionally, clinical observations have documented various stages or phases of COVID-19 and underscored the importance of timing for the efficacy of studied therapies. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many observational, retrospective, and randomized controlled studies have been conducted to guide management of COVID-19 using drug therapies and other management strategies. Large, randomized, or adaptive platform trials have proven the most informative to guide recommended treatments to-date. Antimicrobial stewardship programs can play a pivotal role in ensuring appropriate use of COVID-19 therapies based on evolving clinical data and limiting unnecessary antibiotics given low rates of co-infection., Summary: Given the rapidly evolving medical literature and treatment paradigms, it is recommended to reference continuously updated, curated guidelines from national and international sources. The application of bacterial cellulose (BC) as a wrapping material for vacuum-packaged beef was studied and compared against unwrapped beef for up to 3 weeks. The impact of BC wrap on the weight loss, purge accumulation, and drip loss were assessed along with low-field nuclear magnetic resonance, physicochemical, microbiological, and sensorial evaluations. The BC wrap significantly (P < 0.05) reduced purge accumulation in vacuum packages which was confirmed by an increased swelling ratio and scanning electron microscopy images. Colorimetric measurements showed significantly (P < 0.05) increased redness and yellowness values in wrapped samples compared to unwrapped samples. BC wrap did not affect pH, tenderness, and odor of meat, but significantly (P < 0.05) increased lipid oxidation, and numbers of lactic acid bacteria and Brochothrix thermosphacta counts. This study shows that BC wrap has potential as a purge absorbent in vacuum packaged meat. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Bacteria cellulose has good water holding capacity that can be utilized to absorb purge exudate from beef. Understanding the uptake and storage of gases by microporous materials is important for our future energy security. As such, we demonstrate here the application of two-dimensional NMR relaxation experiments for probing the admission and corresponding exchange dynamics of methane within microporous zeolites. Specifically, we report low-field (12.7 MHz) 1H NMR relaxation-exchange correlation measurements of methane within commercial LTA zeolites (3A and 4A) at 25 and 35 bar and ambient temperature. Our results demonstrate the clear identification of bulk-pore and pore-pore exchange processes within zeolite 4A, facilitating the calculation and comparison of effective exchange rate dynamics across varying diffusion length scales and gas pressures. Additional data acquired for zeolite 3A reveals the sensitivity of NMR relaxation phenomena to size-exclusive gas admission phenomena, illustrating the potential of benchtop NMR protocols for material screening applications.

Hydrate formation was studied using water droplets acoustically levitated in high-pressure natural gas. Despite the absence of solid interfaces, the droplets' area-normalised nucleation rate was about four times faster than in steel autoclave measurements with interfacial areas roughly 200 times larger. Multiple stages of stochastic, template-free hydrate growth were observed.

Gas hydrate formation is a stochastic phenomenon of considerable significance for any risk-based approach to flow assurance in the oil and gas industry. In principle, well-established results from nucleation theory offer the prospect of predictive models for hydrate formation probability in industrial production systems. In practice, however, heuristics are relied on when estimating formation risk for a given flowline subcooling or when quantifying kinetic hydrate inhibitor (KHI) performance. Here, we present statistically significant measurements of formation probability distributions for natural gas hydrate systems under shear, which are quantitatively compared with theoretical predictions. Distributions with over 100 points were generated using low-mass, Peltier-cooled pressure cells, cycled in temperature between 40 and -5 °C at up to 2 K·min -1 and analyzed with robust algorithms that automatically identify hydrate formation and initial growth rates from dynamic pressure data. The application of shear had a significant influence on the measured distributions: at 700 rpm mass-transfer limitations were minimal, as demonstrated by the kinetic growth rates observed. The formation probability distributions measured at this shear rate had mean subcoolings consistent with theoretical predictions and steel-hydrate-water contact angles of 14-26°. However, the experimental distributions were substantially wider than predicted, suggesting that phenomena acting on macroscopic length scales are responsible for much of the observed stochastic formation. Performance tests of a KHI provided new insights into how such chemicals can reduce the risk of hydrate blockage in flowlines. Our data demonstrate that the KHI not only reduces the probability of formation (by both shifting and sharpening the distribution) but also reduces hydrate growth rates by a factor of 2.

An NMR Q-switch was designed and constructed specifically for use with low-field NMR apparatus. This featured a comparatively simple resistive damping design. It served to reduce the r.f. probe ring-down time, and hence reduced the signal acquisition delay from 25 ms to 9 ms, on an Earth's magnetic field NMR system. We demonstrate the use of Tikhonov regularisation as a data inversion technique to determine the velocity distributions of flowing liquid streams. Regularisation is applied to the signal produced by a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) flow measurement system consisting of a pre-polarising permanent magnet located upstream of an Earth's magnetic field NMR detection coil. A simple free induction decay (FID) NMR signal is measured for the flowing stream in what is effectively a 'time-of-flight' measurement. The FID signal is then modelled as a function of fluid velocity and acquisition time, enabling determination of the velocity probability distributions via regularisation. The mean values of these velocity distributions were successfully validated against in-line rotameters. Hypothesis: Shear-induced droplet diffusion of flowing hard spheres is relatively well understood and has been extensively studied both experimentally and via simulations. The same however is not true of soft spheres, specifically emulsions, despite their broad and extensive industrial relevance. Here we seek to demonstrate that appropriate NMR techniques can be used to quantitatively measure shear-induced droplet diffusion. Limited literature indicates that dilute dispersions of soft spheres experience significantly larger shear-induced droplet diffusion relative to otherwise equivalent hard sphere suspensions. Here we explore whether this effect persists to high concentrations., Experiments: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) pulsed field gradient (PFG) techniques were used to measure shear-induced droplet diffusion for capillary flow of various water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions in a direction transverse to flow. Two adaptations were necessary - the acquired signal was analyzed so as to quantitatively distinguish restricted molecular diffusion within the emulsion droplets from shear-induced diffusion of the droplets, whilst flow-compensated PFG pulse sequences were shown to be necessary to account for any erroneous effects due to flow. A range of w/o emulsions were considered to enable measurement of shear-induced droplet diffusion as a function of both water content and mean shear rate. The surfactant content of these emulsions was adjusted such that they presented similar (stationary) emulsion droplet size distributions (DSD) which were also measured using NMR PFG techniques., Findings: The droplet shear-induced diffusion data for the emulsion systems were compared against relevant results from the literature. Consistent with predictions for dilute systems, significantly greater droplet diffusion was measured relative to hard sphere suspensions at all concentrations, and a quadratic dependence was found between droplet diffusion and mean droplet size. Objectives: For reduction of Cr(VI) the Pd-catalyst is excellent but costly. The objectives were to prove the robustness of a Serratia biofilm as a support for biogenic Pd-nanoparticles and to fabricate effective catalyst from precious metal waste., Results: Nanoparticles (NPs) of palladium were immobilized on polyurethane reticulated foam and polypropylene supports via adhesive biofilm of a Serratia sp. The biofilm adhesion and cohesion strength were unaffected by palladization and catalytic biofilm integrity was also shown by magnetic resonance imaging. Biofilm-Pd and mixed precious metals on biofilm (biofilm-PM) reduced 5 mM Cr(VI) to Cr(III) when immobilized in a flow-through column reactor, at respective flow rates of 9 and 6 ml/h. The lower activity of the latter was attributed to fewer, larger, metal deposits on the bacteria. Activity was lost in each case at pH 7 but was restored by washing with 5 mM citrate solution or by exposure of columns to solution at pH 2, suggesting fouling by Cr(III) hydroxide product at neutral pH., Conclusion: A 'one pot' conversion of precious metal waste into new catalyst for waste decontamination was shown in a continuous flow system based on the use of Serratia biofilm to manufacture and support catalytic Pd-nanoparticles.

Benchtop nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) pulsed field gradient (PFG) and relaxation measurements were used to monitor the clathrate hydrate shell growth occurring in water droplets dispersed in a continuous cyclopentane phase. These techniques allowed the growth of hydrate inside the opaque exterior shell to be monitored and, hence, information about the evolution of the shell's morphology to be deduced. NMR relaxation measurements were primarily used to monitor the hydrate shell growth kinetics, while PFG NMR diffusion experiments were used to determine the nominal droplet size distribution (DSD) of the unconverted water inside the shell core. A comparison of mean droplet sizes obtained directly via PFG NMR and independently deduced from relaxation measurements showed that the assumption of the shell model-a perfect spherical core of unconverted water-for these hydrate droplet systems is correct, but only after approximately 24 h of shell growth. Initially, hydrate growth is faster and heat-transfer-limited, leading to porous shells with surface areas larger than that of spheres with equivalent volumes. Subsequently, the hydrate growth rate becomes mass-transfer-limited, and the shells become thicker, spherical, and less porous.

We demonstrate a method to manipulate magnetic resonance data such that the moments of the signal spatial distribution are readily accessible. Usually, magnetic resonance imaging relies on data acquired in so-called k-space which is subsequently Fourier transformed to render an image. Here, via analysis of the complex signal in the vicinity of the centre of k-space we are able to access the first three moments of the signal spatial distribution, ultimately in multiple directions. This is demonstrated for biofouling of a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane module, rendering unique information and an early warning of the onset of fouling. In this paper we demonstrate the use of Earth's field NMR (EF NMR) combined with a pre-polarising permanent magnet for measuring fast fluid velocities. This time of flight measurement protocol has a considerable history in the literature; here we demonstrate that it is quantitative when employing the Earth's magnetic field for signal detection. NMR signal intensities are measured as a function of flow rate (0-1m/s) and separation distance between the permanent magnet and the EF NMR signal detection. These data are quantitatively described by a flow model, ultimately featuring no free parameters, that accounts for NMR signal modulation due to residence time inside the pre-polarising magnet, between the pre-polarising magnet and the detection RF coil and inside the detection coil respectively. Accurate interfacial tension data for fluid systems such as hydrocarbons and water is essential to many applications such as reservoir oil and gas recovery predictions. Conventional interfacial tension measurement techniques typically use optical images to analyze droplet shapes but require that the continuous-phase fluid be optically transparent and that the fluids are not refractive index matched. Magnetic resonance images obtain contrast between fluids using other mechanisms such as magnetic relaxation weighting, so systems that are impossible to measure with optical methods may be analyzed. In this article, we present high-field (9.4 T) MRI images of various droplets analyzed with axisymmetric drop shape analysis. The resultant interfacial tension data show good agreement with literature data. The method is subsequently demonstrated using both opaque continuous phases and refractive-index-matched fluids. We conclude with a brief consideration of the potential to extrapolate the methodology to lower magnetic fields (0.3 T), featuring more accessible hardware; although droplet imaging is possible, resolution and stability do not currently permit accurate interfacial tension measurements.

A range of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques are employed to provide novel, non-invasive measurements of both the structure and transport properties of porous media following a biologically mediated calcite precipitation reaction. Both a model glass bead pack and a sandstone rock core were considered. Structure was probed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) via a combination of quantitative one-dimensional profiles and three-dimensional images, applied before and after the formation of calcite in order to characterise the spatial distribution of the precipitate. It was shown through modification and variations of the calcite precipitation treatment that differences in the calcite fill would occur but all methods were successful in partially blocking the different porous media. Precipitation was seen to occur predominantly at the inlet of the bead pack, whereas precipitation occurred almost uniformly along the sandstone core. Transport properties are quantified using pulse field gradient (PFG) NMR measurements which provide probability distributions of molecular displacement over a set observation time (propagators), supplementing conventional permeability measurements. Propagators quantify the local effect of calcite formation on system hydrodynamics and the extent of stagnant region formation. The business case for gender diversity in senior and executive positions is compelling. Studies show that companies that have the best records for promoting women outstrip their competition on every measure of profitability. Yet women disproportionately are failing to attain high-level positions. Reviewing current data on women in the workplace, findings of studies on the relationship between gender diversity in senior management and company performance, and the literature on gender behavioral differences and the workplace, this article explores the possible reasons for the persistent wage and gender gap between women and men in senior leadership positions and discusses possible remedies.

Monodisperse water-in-oil-in-water (WOW) double emulsions have been prepared using microfluidic glass devices designed and built primarily from off the shelf components. The systems were easy to assemble and use. They were capable of producing double emulsions with an outer droplet size from 100 to 40 μm. Depending on how the devices were operated, double emulsions containing either single or multiple water droplets could be produced. Pulsed-field gradient self-diffusion NMR experiments have been performed on the monodisperse water-in-oil-in-water double emulsions to obtain information on the inner water droplet diameter and the distribution of the water in the different phases of the double emulsion. This has been achieved by applying regularization methods to the self-diffusion data. The use of the Earth's magnetic field (EF) to conduct nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments has a long history with a growing list of applications (e.g. ground water detection, diffusion measurements of Antarctic sea ice). In this paper we explore whether EFNMR can be used to accurately and practically measure the mean droplet size () of water-in-oil emulsions (paraffin and crude oil). We use both pulsed field gradient (PFG) measurements of restricted self-diffusion and T₂ relaxometry, as appropriate. T₂ relaxometry allows the extension of droplet sizing ability below the limits set by the available magnetic field gradient strength of the EFNMR apparatus. A commercially available bench-top NMR spectrometer is used to verify the results obtained using the EFNMR instrument, with good agreement within experimental error, seen between the two instruments. A 3D Biofilm model, appropriate for complex porous media support structures, is successfully modified such that non-zero permeability of biofilms structures is enabled. A systematic study is then conducted into the influence of biofilm permeability on overall biomass growth rate. This reveals a significant influence at large biofilm concentrations; even when the permeability of the biomass is 1.25% of that of the free pore space, biomass accumulation increased by a factor of ∼3 over 40 h. The effect is shown to be retained when allowing for biomass detachment or erosion as a consequence of adjacent velocity shear. We conclude that biofilm permeability should be included in biofilm models and that further experimental work is required to better describe the link between biofilm permeability and local microstructure., (Copyright © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Various MRI techniques were considered with respect to imaging of aqueous flow fields in low grade copper ore. Spin echo frequency encoded techniques were shown to produce unacceptable image distortions which led to pure phase encoded techniques being considered. Single point imaging multiple point acquisition (SPI-MPA) and spin echo single point imaging (SESPI) techniques were applied. By direct comparison with X-ray tomographic images, both techniques were found to be able to produce distortion-free images of the ore packings at 2 T. The signal to noise ratios (SNRs) of the SESPI images were found to be superior to SPI-MPA for equal total acquisition times; this was explained based on NMR relaxation measurements. SESPI was also found to produce suitable images for a range of particles sizes, whereas SPI-MPA SNR deteriorated markedly as particles size was reduced. Comparisons on a 4.7 T magnet showed significant signal loss from the SPI-MPA images, the effect of which was accentuated in the case of unsaturated flowing systems. Historically, biofouling research on spiral wound membrane systems is typically problem solving oriented. Membrane modules are studied as black box systems, investigated by autopsies. Biofouling is not a simple process. Many factors influence each other in a non-linear fashion. These features make biofouling a subject which is not easy to study using a fundamental scientific approach. Nevertheless to solve or minimize the negative impacts of biofouling, a clear understanding of the interacting basic principles is needed. Recent research into microbiological characterizing of biofouling, small scale test units, application of in situ visualization methods, and model approaches allow such an integrated study of biofouling.

Pulsed Field Gradient (PFG) measurements are commonly used to determine emulsion droplet size distributions based on restricted self-diffusion within the emulsion droplets. Such measurement capability is readily available on commercial NMR bench-top apparatus. A significant limitation is the requirement to selectively detect signal from the liquid phase within the emulsion droplets; this is currently achieved using either relaxation or self-diffusion contrast. Here we demonstrate the use of a 1.1 T bench-top NMR magnet, which when coupled with an rf micro-coil, is able to provide sufficient chemical shift resolution such that unambiguous signal selection is achieved from the dispersed droplet phase. We also improve the accuracy of the numerical inversion process required to produce the emulsion droplet size distribution, by employing the Block Gradient Pulse (bgp) method, which partially relaxes the assumptions of a Gaussian phase distribution or infinitely short gradient pulse application inherent in current application. Industrial waste streams may contain contaminants that are valuable like Pd(II) and/or toxic and mutagenic like Cr(VI). Using Serratia sp. biofilm the former was biomineralized to produce a supported nanocrystalline Pd(0) catalyst, and this biofilm-Pd heterogeneous catalyst was then used to reduce Cr(VI) to less dangerous Cr(III) at room temperature, with formate as the electron donor. Cr(VI)((aq)) is non-paramagnetic while Cr(III)((aq)) is paramagnetic, which enabled spatial mapping of Cr species concentrations within the reactor cell using non-invasive magnetic resonance (MR) imaging experiments. Spatial reactivity heterogeneities were thus examined. In batch reactions, these could be attributed primarily to heterogeneity of Pd(0) distribution and to the development of gas bubbles within the reactor. The increasing demand for drinking water and its stricter quality requirements have resulted in an exponentially expanding industry of membrane filtration processes. Currently, reverse osmosis (RO) is the most common method of desalination, able to produce water that is virtually free of pollutants and pathogenic micro-organisms. Biofouling of these devices however is a significant limitation. Here we present a 3D simulation of RO membrane biofouling based on a lattice Boltzmann (LB) platform that we subsequently favorably compare with experimental data. This data consists of temporally (and spatially) resolved velocity measurements acquired for a RO membrane using magnetic resonance techniques. The effect of biofilm cohesive strength on system pressure drop is then explored; weaker biomass is observed to have a reduced impact on pressure drop (per unit biomass accumulated).

It is known that internal magnetic field gradients in porous materials, caused by susceptibility differences at the solid-fluid interfaces, alter the observed effective Nuclear Magnetic Resonance transverse relaxation times T2,eff. The internal gradients scale with the strength of the static background magnetic field B0. Here, we acquire data at various magnitudes of B0 to observe the influence of internal gradients on T2-T2 exchange measurements; the theory discussed and observations made are applicable to any T2-T2 analysis of heterogeneous materials. At high magnetic field strengths, it is possible to observe diffusive exchange between regions of local internal gradient extrema within individual pores. Therefore, the observed exchange pathways are not associated with pore-to-pore exchange. Understanding the significance of internal gradients in transverse relaxation measurements is critical to interpreting these results. We present the example of water in porous sandstone rock and offer a guideline to determine whether an observed T2,eff relaxation time distribution reflects the pore size distribution for a given susceptibility contrast (magnetic field strength) and spin echo separation. More generally, we confirm that for porous materials T1 provides a better indication of the pore size distribution than T2,eff at high magnetic field strengths (B0>1 T), and demonstrate the data analysis necessary to validate pore size interpretations of T2,eff measurements.

Rapid velocity measurements using GERVAIS (Gradient Echo Rapid Velocity and Acceleration Imaging Sequence), an EPI (Echo Planar Imaging) based technique capable of measuring velocity over an observation time of several milliseconds, are performed on a wide-gap Couette Rheo-NMR cell for the first time. A variable delay time between a control signal to initiate a transition in flow and the start of the measurement sequence is incorporated to allow investigation of the transient evolution of the velocity field following a step change in rotation rate. Both the commencement and the cessation of imposed shear stress are investigated for (i) a shear banding micellar solution of CPyCl (cetylpyridiniumchloride)/NaSal (sodium salicylate) in brine and (ii) a low molecular weight PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) oil. With respect to the micellar solution, an elastic shear wave is seen to propagate across the cell following the commencement of shear stress whilst an oscillatory 'recoil' is observed following the cessation of shear stress; neither of these phenomena were observed for the PDMS oil which exhibited a purely viscous response as expected for an incompressible Newtonian fluid. A novel approach with respect to single point imaging (SPI), compressed sensing, is presented here that is shown to significantly reduce the loss of accuracy of reconstructed images from under-sampled acquisition data. SPI complements compressed sensing extremely well as it allows unconstrained selection of sampling trajectories. Dynamic processes featuring short T2* NMR signal can thus be more rapidly imaged, in our case the absorption of moisture by a cereal-based wafer material, with minimal loss of image quantification. The absolute moisture content distribution is recovered via a series of images acquired with variable phase encoding times allowing extrapolation to time zero for each image pixel and the effective removal of T2* contrast.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques were used to quantify the transport of colloids through porous media. This was achieved via the application of chemically-resolved pulsed field gradient (PFG) methods, hence probing the displacement (probability distribution) propagators of both the colloidal and continuous liquid phase. A dilute decane-in-water emulsion was used with flow through a random glass sphere packing being considered. The acquired propagators allowed for quantification of both colloidal entrapment and the velocities of both the continuous phase and the flowing colloids. The flowing colloids were found to experience a velocity acceleration factor (VAF) increase of 1.08 relative to the continuous phase. This was found to be independent of displacement observation time or flowrate. It was speculated to be a consequence of radial exclusion due to the finite size of the colloids. Simulations of the colloidal transport were also performed using a lattice Boltzmann platform and a Lagrangian particle-tracking algorithm which incorporated colloidal radial exclusion. Reasonable agreement was observed between the simulation and the experimental data.

Bubble flow is characterised by numerous phase interfaces and turbulence, leading to fast magnetic resonance signal decay and artefacts in spin-warp imaging. In this paper, the SPRITE MRI pulse sequence, with its potential for very short encoding times, is demonstrated as an ideal technique for studying such dynamic systems. It has been used to acquire liquid velocity and relative intensity maps of two-phase gas-liquid dispersed bubble flow in a horizontal pipe at a liquid Reynolds number of 14,500. The fluids were air and water and a turbulence grid was used to generate a dispersed bubble flow pattern. The SPRITE technique shows promise for future research in gas-liquid flow.

While biological clogging of porous systems can be problematic in numerous processes (e.g., microbial enhanced oil recovery-MEOR), it is targeted during bio-barrier formation to control sub-surface pollution plumes in ground water. In this simulation study, constant pressure drop (CPD) and constant volumetric flow rate (CVF) operational modes for nutrient provision for biofilm growth in a porous system are considered with respect to optimum (minimum energy requirement for nutrient provision) permeability reduction for bio-barrier applications. Biofilm growth is simulated using a Lattice-Boltzmann (LB) simulation platform complemented with an individual-based biofilm model (IbM). A biomass detachment technique has been included using a fast marching level set (FMLS) method that models the propagation of the biofilm-liquid interface with a speed proportional to the adjacent velocity shear field. The porous medium permeability reduction is simulated for both operational modes using a range of biofilm strengths. For stronger biofilms, less biomass deposition and energy input are required to reduce the system permeability during CPD operation, whereas CVF is more efficient at reducing the permeability of systems containing weaker biofilms., ((c) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) two-dimensional relaxation correlation experiments have been used to study an industrially relevant formulation of surfactant multilamellar vesicles (MLVs) in an aqueous solution. By correlating transverse T2 relaxation measurements before and after a storage interval, diffusive exchange of water molecules between domains can be observed. Two average exchange times of 0.04 and 0.83 s were determined by solving the one-dimensional Fredholm integral form of a model for region-to-region exchange. Diffusion coefficients for the restricted and free water fractions within the mixture determined via chemically selective pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR measurements allowed exchange distances of 6.2 and 81 microm to be determined from the exchange times. These exchange distances are associated with the average MLV diameter and speculatively with the size of MLV clusters, respectively.
