De-dollarization is a “significant reduction in the use of dollars in world trade and financial transactions, [as well as] decreasing national, institutional and corporate demand” for United States dollars. (Goldman Sachs 2023; Li Yuefen 2024) De-dollarization has been a persistent theme since the collapse of the Bretton Woods Gold System in 1971 and the rising US national debt. (Cohen 2015) Efforts to minimise reliance upon the US dollar, such as the 1976 introduction of the IMF Special Drawing Right and the 2002 introduction of the Euro, failed to displace dollar dominance. (Eichengreen 2011) The Euro is a currency without a Nation State and the IMF SDR is not a currency used to invoice and settle international trade and financial transactions. However, the decision of the United States to “weaponize” the use of the dollar and to impose restrictions on global payment systems have impelled countries to construct an alternative to the dollar system. (Sen 2019) This article first examines the adverse effects of using the US dollar as a global reserve currency. Second, the article examines the application of economic sanctions, specifically against the Russian Federation, to illustrate the probable development of an alternative reserve and invoice currency to co-exist with the dollar. Third, the article posits the conditions necessary to establish a viable alternative to the dollar and then examines efforts to promote alternatives to global payment systems such as SWIFT, and to build a new reserve currency. The article concludes: [1] the imposition of economic sanctions compels target countries to create alternative financial systems and settle international trade in national currencies; [2] establishing a new reserve currency out of whole cloth is a formidable task and lacks a recent historical counterpart, [3] the renminbi is the likely currency to rival, not displace, the US dollar.

Prior to filing for bankruptcy in 2008, Lehman Brothers Holding Inc., [LBHI] relied upon select repurchase agreements denominated “Repo 105” and “Repo 108” for the purpose of re-casting its balance sheet to meet net leverage ratios required by money markets. SFAS 140, as then existing without the 2011 amendment, provided a mechanism to treat “ordinary borrowings” as “asset sales”. LBHI used SFAS 140 to justify Repo 105 and Repo 108 transactions to engineer its balance sheet. The accounting treatment resulted in the publication of misleading quarterly and annual Financial Statements relied upon by external users to make investment decisions. In 2011 and 2012, the Southern District of New York issued opinions in the consolidated LBHI litigation. The finding that LBHI correctly applied the criteria of SFAS 140 to justify “borrowings” as “asset sales” under Repo 105 and Repo 108 is fundamentally flawed. During the period 2000 until 2008, Ernst & Young [E&Y] served as the outside auditor of LBHI. Legal principles governing the obligations of auditors support a finding that E&Y committed professional malpractice by issuing unqualified audit opinions knowing that LBHI failed to disclose its liabilities to repurchase transferred securities under Repo 105 and Repo 108 transactions. Economic analysis of non-contractual obligations [tort] supports a reformulation of the legal standard governing auditor liability to external users of audited financial statements containing materially misleading information. The reformulated standard allocates incentives to take precautions both to the audit firm and to the external user to achieve an efficient allocation of the cost of harm ensuing from defective information products.

Abstract Recent population recovery of many pinniped species (seals, sea lions, walrus) is a conservation success. However, pinniped population recovery combined with increasing global fisheries operations is leading to increased conflicts between pinnipeds and fisheries. This human-wildlife conflict threatens pinniped conservation outcomes and may impose damaging impacts on fisheries, but the economic consequences and extent of these impacts are poorly understood. Here, we provide a global assessment of pinniped and fisheries operational interactions. We show that a third of reported fishing days have interactions with pinnipeds and 13.8% of catch is lost. Our results also reveal high heterogeneity between studies. Small-scale fisheries are three times more likely to interact with pinnipeds and lose four times as much catch as large-scale fisheries. Finally, we develop a spatial index that can predict where conflict is most likely to occur. Our findings reveal a substantial global issue requiring appropriate management as pinniped populations continue to recover.

Abstract A theoretical perspective on grandiose narcissism suggests four forms of it (sanctity, admiration, heroism, rivalry) and states that these forms conduce to different ways of thinking and acting. Guided by this perspective, we examined in a multinational and multicultural study (61 countries; N = 15,039) how narcissism forms are linked to cognitions and behaviors prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As expected, differences in cognitions and behaviors across narcissism forms emerged. For example, higher narcissistic rivalry predicted lower likelihood of enactment of COVID-19 prevention behaviors, but higher narcissistic sanctity predicted higher likelihood of enactment of COVID-19 prevention behaviors. Further, whereas the heroism, admiration, and rivalry narcissism forms acted in a typically antisocial manner, with high narcissism predicting greater endorsement of unfounded health beliefs, the sanctity form acted in a prosocial manner, with higher narcissism being linked to lower endorsement of unfounded COVID-19 health beliefs. Thus, the findings (a) support the idea of four narcissism forms acting differently, and (b) show that these differences reflect a double-edged sword, sometimes linking to an anti-social orientation, and sometimes linking to a pro-social orientation.

IntroductionFluctuations in water quality characteristics influence the productivity of blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus), and the risk of human exposure to pathogenic Vibrio species. Thus, this study assessed the prevalence of total and pathogenic/clinical markers of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus in blue crabs and seawater from the Maryland Coastal Bays (MCBs) and the correlation between Vibrio levels and physicochemical parameters.MethodsThree to five crabs and 1 L of seawater were collected monthly for 3 years (May 2018 to December 2020) from six sites within the MCBs. Hemolymph and crab tissue were extracted and pooled for each site. Extracted hemolymph, crab tissue, and seawater were analyzed for V. parahaemolyticus and V. vulnificus using the Most Probable Number (MPN) and real-time PCR methods. A one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), correlations, and linear models were used to analyze the data. Akaike Information Criterion (AICc) was evaluated to determine the model that provides the best fit to the data relating to Vibrio concentrations and environmental factors.ResultsResults suggested that environmental factors could influence the growth of Vibrio spp. Both V. parahaemolyticus and V. vulnificus were more prevalent during the warmer months than colder months. Vibrio was more prevalent in crab samples compared to seawater. Vibrio vulnificus concentrations in seawater and hemolymph were positively correlated with temperature (p = 0.0143 seawater) and pH (p = 0.006 hemolymph). A negative correlation was observed between the concentration of V. vulnificus in whole crab (tissue) and dissolved oxygen level (p = 0.0256). The concentration of V. parahaemolyticus in seawater was positively correlated with temperature (p = 0.009) and negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen (p = 0.012).DiscussionThese results provide current information on the spatial and temporal distributions of Vibrio spp. in the MCBs that are useful for implementing more efficient processing and handling procedures of seafood products.

Abstract Highly sensitive vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays (VANTAs) interdigitated electrode (IDE) arrays are developed for electrochemical biosensing of two cytokines (i.e., interleukin‐10 (IL‐10) and interferon‐gamma (IFN‐γ)) that are useful for early detection Johne's disease (Bovine Paratuberculosis) in cattle. The high aspect ratio VANTA‐IDEs (50–60 µm in height) are grown through a chemical vapor deposition process from an iron (Fe) catalyst that is lithographically patterned on a silicon wafer with equal finger width and inter‐finger spacing of 25 µm. Abstract Background Periprosthetic joint infection is a serious complication following joint replacement. The development of bacterial biofilms bestows antibiotic resistance and restricts treatment via implant retention surgery. Electromagnetic induction heating is a novel technique for antibacterial treatment of metallic surfaces that has demonstrated in-vitro efficacy. Previous studies have always employed stationary, non-portable devices. This study aims to assess the in-vitro efficacy of induction-heating disinfection of metallic surfaces using a new Portable Disinfection System based on Induction Heating. Methods Mature biofilms of three bacterial species: S. epidermidis ATCC 35,984, S. aureus ATCC 25,923, E. coli ATCC 25,922, were grown on 18 × 2 mm cylindrical coupons of Titanium-Aluminium-Vanadium (Ti6Al4V) or Cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloys. Study intervention was induction-heating of the coupon surface up to 70ºC for 210s, performed using the Portable Disinfection System (PDSIH). Temperature was monitored using thermographic imaging. For each bacterial strain and each metallic alloy, experiments and controls were conducted in triplicate. Bacterial load was quantified through scraping and drop plate techniques. Data were evaluated using non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test for 2 group comparison. Statistical significance was fixed at p ≤ 0.05. Results All bacterial strains showed a statistically significant reduction of CFU per surface area in both materials. Bacterial load reduction amounted to 0.507 and 0.602 Log10 CFU/mL for S. aureus on Ti6Al4V and CoCrMo respectively, 5.937 and 3.500 Log10 CFU/mL for E. coli, and 1.222 and 0.372 Log10 CFU/mL for S. epidermidis. Conclusions Electromagnetic induction heating using PDSIH is efficacious to reduce mature biofilms of S aureus, E coli and S epidermidis growing on metallic surfaces of Ti6Al4V and CoCrMo alloys.

Abstract The relationship between agricultural credit and agricultural production as well as the impacts on sustainable development (i.e., poverty alleviation, reduction of inequalities, food and nutrition security, and stimulation of economic growth) have been widely documented. The objective of this study is to analyze the impact of credit on cattle production and deforestation in Colombia through spatial panel data models. For this purpose, a departmental data panel for the period 2011–2020 was built, based on available information from public entities. The results suggest that in Colombia, the relationship between access to credit and cattle production is significant and can be either negative or positive. In addition, there is evidence of spatial dependence, meaning that cattle production in one department is being affected by cattle production in a neighboring department or by all the departments that make up the national territory. Regarding deforestation, results show that, although the number of cattle present in a department does affect its annual deforestation rate due to a poor coverage of sustainably intensified cattle ranching systems, there is no relationship between deforestation and the access to credit nor any spatial correlations.

A la luz del proyecto de investigación “Banco de Datos Terminológicos de las Ciencias de la Información (BDTCI). Segunda etapa: Base de Datos Terminológicos de la Bibliotecología (BDT-B)”, se hace un acercamiento a la terminología de las Unidades de Información Universitarias (UIU). Presentamos la metodología clásica de trabajo terminológico llevada a cabo en investigaciones de este tipo, con énfasis en la realización de grupos focales de profesionales que se desempeñan en bibliotecas académicas. Describimos el uso de los términos “biblioteca universitaria” / “biblioteca académica” y “ciencia de la información” / “ciencias de la información” hallados en el corpus textual conformado principalmente por artículos publicados en revistas reconocidas en el ámbito bibliotecológico y de las ciencias de la información en Iberoamérica. Por último, exponemos algunas consideraciones finales.

The increase of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has become a global health emergency and the need to explore alternative therapeutic options arises. Phage therapy uses bacteriophages to target specific bacterial strains. Phages are highly specific and can target resistant bacteria. Currently, research in this regard is focused on ensuring reliability and safety to bring this tool into clinical practice. The first step is to conduct comprehensive preclinical research. In this work, we present two novel bacteriophages vB_Kpn_F13 and vB_Kpn_F14 isolated against clinical carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains obtained from hospital sewage. Multiple studies in vitro were conducted, such as sequencing, electron microscopy, stability, host range infectivity, planktonic effect and biofilm inhibition in order to discover their ability to be used against carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae pathogens causing difficult-to-treat infections.

Introduction: Emerging literature links fatherhood to men's health but lacks comprehensive assessment of health outcomes, especially among multiethnic populations. This study's objective was to evaluate the associations of fatherhood (age at onset and status) with cardiovascular health scores, incident cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular disease death, and all-cause mortality, examining differences by race/ethnicity. Methods: The study sample included men from Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, prospective cohort study that enrolled adults aged 45–84 years without known cardiovascular disease at baseline. Cardiovascular health was defined using the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 scores (0–100), excluding sleep (cardiovascular health score). Results: In this sample of 2,814 men, mean age at cardiovascular health assessment was 62.2 years, 82% were fathers, 24% self-identified as Black, 13% self-identified Chinese, 22% self-identified Hispanic, and 41% self-identified White. Abstract Insects play a crucial role in all ecosystems, and are increasingly exposed to higher in temperature extremes under climate change, which can have substantial effects on their abundances. However, the effects of temperature on changes in abundances or population fitness are filtered through differential responses of life‐history components, such as survival, reproduction, and development, to their environment. Such differential responses, or trade‐offs, have been widely studied in birds and mammals, but comparative studies on insects are largely lacking, limiting our understanding of key mechanisms that may buffer or exacerbate climate‐change effects across insect species. Here, we performed a systematic literature review of the ecological studies of lacewings (Neuroptera), predatory insects that play a crucial role in ecosystem pest regulation, to investigate the impact of temperature on life cycle dynamics across species. We found quantitative information, linking stage‐specific survival, development, and reproduction to temperature variation, for 62 species from 39 locations. We then performed a metanalysis calculating sensitives to temperature across life‐history processes for all publications. We found that developmental times consistently decreased with temperature for all species. Survival and reproduction however showed a weaker response to temperature, and temperature sensitivities varied substantially among species. After controlling for the effect of temperature on life‐history processes, the latter covaried consistently across two main axes of variation related to instar and pupae development, suggesting the presence of life‐history trade‐offs. Our work provides new information that can help generalize life‐history responses of insects to temperature, which can then expand comparative demographic and climate‐change research. We also discuss important remaining knowledge gaps, such as a better assessment of adult survival and diapause.

Sugarcane is a crucial crop for sugar and bioenergy production. Saccharose content and total weight are the two main key commercial traits that compose sugarcane’s yield. These traits are under complex genetic control and their response patterns are influenced by the genotype-by-environment (G×E) interaction. An efficient breeding of sugarcane demands an accurate assessment of the genotype stability through multi-environment trials (METs), where genotypes are tested/evaluated across different environments. However, phenotyping all genotype-in-environment combinations is often impractical due to cost and limited availability of propagation-materials. This study introduces the sparse testing designs as a viable alternative, leveraging genomic information to predict unobserved combinations through genomic prediction models. This approach was applied to a dataset comprising 186 genotypes across six environments (6×186=1,116 phenotypes). Our study employed three predictive models, including environment, genotype, and genomic markers as main effects, as well as the G×E to predict saccharose accumulation (SA) and tons of cane per hectare (TCH). Calibration sets sizes varying between 72 (6.5%) to 186 (16.7%) of the total number of phenotypes were composed to predict the remaining 930 (83.3%). Additionally, we explored the optimal number of common genotypes across environments for G×E pattern prediction. Results demonstrate that maximum accuracy for SA (ρ=0.611) and for TCH (ρ=0.341) was achieved using in training sets few (3) to no common (0) genotype across environments maximizing the number of different genotypes that were tested only once. Significantly, we show that reducing phenotypic records for model calibration has minimal impact on predictive ability, with sets of 12 non-overlapped genotypes per environment (72=12×6) being the most convenient cost-benefit combination.

Estudiar las creencias de los profesores es importante porque son constructos que influyen en la práctica de la enseñanza, y evaluarlas permite entender cómo se pueden mejorar. El objetivo fue identificar las creencias sobre las matemáticas, su enseñanza y su aprendizaje, que son las tres variables de este estudio, y analizar su relación. Se utilizó un diseño metodológico cuantitativo con un muestreo no probabilístico por conveniencia. El instrumento fue aplicado a 199 profesores de matemáticas, y obtuvo un alfa de Cronbach de 0.803. Los resultados indicaron que los docentes tienden a tener creencias platonistas (menos adecuadas) y de resolución de problemas (más adecuadas), y que existe una asociación moderada entre las tres variables evaluadas, lo que podría indicar que hay una coherencia entre las creencias de los profesores tanto en lo que saben sobre las matemáticas como en su enseñanza y su aprendizaje.

Chiles Volcano is an active stratovolcano of the Cordillera Occidental in a dormant state built by accumulation of andesitic-dacitic lava flows, which was affected by a large lateral collapse on its northern flank that subsequently generated one or multiple volcanic debris avalanches (VDAs). As a result of the morphological analysis of the collapse scar, it is proposed that this lateral collapse may have been caused by factors unrelated to the volcano's eruptive activity, which impacted the stability of the volcanic structure. This geomorphological study marks a significant step forward in understanding lateral collapses in an area where sedimentological data about the VDAs is extremely limited due not only to the complexity of the topography, but also to the glacial and fluvial processes of the area. The descriptive and geometric analysis of the scar resulting from the collapse indicates that this morphological expression is U-shaped and deep-seated and has the following dimensions: length = 3.0 km, width = 1.6 km, height = 0.8 km, and aperture angle = 31°. Respectively, the area and volume of material involved in the collapse are estimated at 4.0 km2 and 0.5 km3. The geomechanical characterization of the Chiles Volcano rocks was done in five outcrops located on the southern flank applying either the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) or the Geological Strength Index (GSI); additionally, these values obtained in the field were complemented with results from other studies in the area, which encompass the eastern and northern flanks of the volcano. GSI values for columnar, brecciated, and blocky lava flows range between 47–72; 15–65 and 37–57, respectively. Using triaxial tests by the multiple failure state method, the compressive strength of the rock mass was 24.92 MPa; respectively, cohesion and internal friction angle values were 4.21 MPa and 51.95° for peak strength, and 1.52 MPa and 52.4° for residual strength.

Interactions among components of the Earth System are well exemplified by the behavior of animals around the time of earthquakes, and the abundant published data and long-standing oral tradition on animal reactions to seismicity have become hard to ignore, these are important facts that provide opportunities for cross-disciplinary research. A compilation of reports on abnormal animal behavior in relation to earthquakes in Colombia covering the period 1610-2019 was produced by a rigorous two-stage search of cases using online resources. The reports localities follow the spatial distribution of epicenters and the main tectonic features of the Colombian territory. Both, the first and second-stage searches revealed that, for 41 destructive earthquakes, there are 138 reports of animals reacting to seismicity, most of which fall into phylum Chordata, class Mammalia, order Carnivora, family Canidae, genus Canis, species C. familiaris. The first-stage search indicates that coseismic reactions of the species C. familairis, B. taurus, and E. caballus dominate over preseismic and postseismic manifestations, in contrast to results from the news media-based second-stage search, which indicates dominance of preseismic behavior. It is concluded that in this region animals have reacted persistently to earthquakes and that folklore and oral tradition deserve some degree of credibility in this phenomenon.

El presente artículo acude a los aportes metodológicos de la historia de los animales y teóricos del posthumanismo y el post-antropocentrismo. Tiene como objetivo describir y analizar el mundo socioambiental en el que la República de Colombia fraguó su proceso de invención (1815-1819) en la región natural de los Llanos de la Nueva Granada (actual Colombia) y Venezuela. Para ello se estudiarán las relaciones establecidas entre humanos y no humanos que les sirvieron a andinos y llaneros para posicionarse con más fuerza tanto en la conducción de las tropas patriotas como en la construcción de la República de Colombia. Las fuentes primarias consultadas fueron: memorias de los combatientes extranjeros en la guerra de independencia, correspondencia de los militares realistas y correspondencia de militares patriotas. La principal conclusión a la que se llega es que el Reino de la Nueva Granada colapsó gracias a los recursos humanos y del “Reino animal” de la región de los Llanos y del Orinoco del norte de Suramérica, en el que los animales, tanto salvajes como domésticos, fueron protagonistas claves de este proceso.

La fundación del primer hospital en la ciudad de Santafé en el Nuevo Reino de Granada siempre fue auspiciada por la Corona española, pero, pese a ello, el proyecto tardó tres décadas en ejecutarse. Cuando el hospital entró en servicio, lo hizo con un exiguo presupuesto y la institución siempre careció de fondos suficientes para realizar su misión. A ello se añaden las decisiones adoptadas por las autoridades eclesiásticas, que no siempre invirtieron lo proveniente de los diezmos en el funcionamiento del hospital, y la ineficaz administración dispensada a la entidad. Este artículo, siguiendo los documentos de archivo que se han consultado sobre el caso, analiza las causas de la tardanza de la fundación del hospital San Pedro de Santafé y sus problemas financieros en las primeras décadas de su funcionamiento.

In the present study, we successfully prepared nanoparticles of Ce-doped Copper ferrite, CuCexFe2-xO4(x = 0.00, 0.03, and 0.05), in the nanoscale using the chemical co-precipitation technique. Esta investigación presenta una metodología para optimizar fuerzas de control en edificaciones, las cuales se encuentran sometidas a cargas sísmicas. Se desarrolló un sistema de control llamado CLF-MR_I, el cuál combina un algoritmo genético de clasificación no dominada NSGA-II y un sistema de control basado en lógica difusa. El controlador fue ensayado numéricamente en una edificación real de 96 m de altura, en la cual se instalaron 6 amortiguadores magnetoreológicos MR. La estructura fue sometida a 8 aceleraciones de sismo con diferentes rangos frecuenciales. Los parámetros de entrada para el sistema de control propuesto fueron los desplazamientos y las velocidades del primer piso de la edificación y como único parámetro de salida, se definió el voltaje de los dispositivos MR. La eficiencia del CLF-MR_1 fue comparada con un segundo controlador llamado CLF-MR_2, el cual funciona mediante un sistema de inferencia basado en parámetros lingüísticos. Los resultados obtenidos indican que el CLF-MR_1 mejora significativamente la respuesta dinámica de la edificación, en comparación con los resultados obtenidos con el CLF-MR_2 y con la condición no controlada de la edificación.

Abstract Aging is a natural process by which organisms experience physiological decline leading to susceptibility to morbidity and mortality. There are no known antiaging drugs but there is a myriad of medicinal foods and plants that have been used in managing the state. Several studies have also been conducted on the antiaging properties of medicinal plants and foods, but these pieces of information are scattered. This paper attempts to integrate available information on medicinal foods and plants as well as isolated chemical compounds with antiaging potential. It also provides different models (in vitro and in vivo) that are used in evaluating the potency of natural products. Current literature on the subject was obtained from different databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. A total of 119 medicinal plants and 50 isolated compounds were reported in this study. Different models were also used to evaluate the efficacy of these plants which include in vitro (enzyme inhibition, use of cell lines) and in vivo (Caenorhabditis elegans, yeast, fruit fly, mice, and rats) models. It can be concluded that medicinal foods and plants are reservoirs of potential therapeutic agents that can efficiently modulate metabolic processes implicated in aging and its associated disorders.

Objective: The choice to operate on moderate tricuspid regurgitation (TR) during mitral surgery is challenging owing to limited mid-term data. We assess whether concomitant tricuspid operations improve mid-term quality of life, morbidity, or mortality. Methods: An institutional database identified mitral surgery recipients with moderate TR at the time of surgery from 2010 to 2019. Patients were stratified by the presence of a concomitant tricuspid operation. Quality of life at the last follow-up was assessed with the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ-12). Morbidity was compared using the χ2 test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Student t test. Survival was analyzed with Kaplan-Meier estimation. Results: Of 210 mitral surgery recipients, 67 (31.9%) underwent concomitant tricuspid surgery. The concomitant tricuspid surgery cohort had greater preoperative dialysis use (10.5% vs 3.5%; P = .043) but similar age, New York Heart Association class, and cardiac surgery history relative to the nonconcomitant cohort (P > .05 for all). The concomitant tricuspid surgery cohort had a longer cardiopulmonary bypass time (144 minutes vs 122 minutes; P = .005) but a similar rate of mitral repair (P = .220). Postoperative KCCQ-12 scores reflected high quality of life in both cohorts (95.1 vs 89.1; P = .167). The concomitant tricuspid surgery cohort trended toward a higher perioperative pacemaker placement rate (22.8% vs 12.7%; P = .088) but were less likely to develop severe TR (0.0% vs 13.0%; P = .004). Overall survival was comparable between the 2 cohorts at 1 year (84.9% vs 81.6%; P = .628) and 5 years (73.5% vs 57.9%; P = .078). Five-year survival free from severe TR was higher in the concomitant cohort (73.5% vs 54.3%; P = .032). Conclusions: Concomitant tricuspid surgery for moderate TR is associated with increased 5-year survival free from severe TR but not with increased quality of life.

Summary: Synaptic vesicle docking and priming are dynamic processes. At the molecular level, SNAREs (soluble NSF attachment protein receptors), synaptotagmins, and other factors are critical for Ca2+-triggered vesicle exocytosis, while disassembly factors, including NSF (N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor) and α-SNAP (soluble NSF attachment protein), disassemble and recycle SNAREs and antagonize fusion under some conditions. Here, we introduce a hybrid fusion assay that uses synaptic vesicles isolated from mouse brains and synthetic plasma membrane mimics. We included Munc18, Munc13, complexin, NSF, α-SNAP, and an ATP-regeneration system and maintained them continuously—as in the neuron—to investigate how these opposing processes yield fusogenic synaptic vesicles. In this setting, synaptic vesicle association is reversible, and the ATP-regeneration system produces the most synchronous Ca2+-triggered fusion, suggesting that disassembly factors perform quality control at the early stages of synaptic vesicle association to establish a highly fusogenic state. We uncovered a functional role for Munc13 ancillary to the MUN domain that alleviates an α-SNAP-dependent inhibition of Ca2+-triggered fusion.

Los trabajos prácticos han sido fuente inagotable de investigación en el campo de la didáctica de las ciencias. Dada su importancia y la incidencia en los desempeños de los estudiantes, se hace necesario desarrollar una revisión sistemática de la literatura, con el objetivo de identificar las relaciones entre estas dos variables (trabajos prácticos y desempeño de los estudiantes). Se utilizó la metodología PRISMA, así como los métodos: revisión documental y hermenéutico. Se exploraron las bases de datos Scopus y Web of Science, de donde se seleccionaron 33 publicaciones, en las que las que emergieron tres categorías principales: construcción de conocimientos, desarrollo de habilidades y cambios de actitud en los estudiantes. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren la importancia de la implementación de trabajos prácticos al favorecer en el desempeño de los estudiantes estas tres categorías; además, favorecen la generación de alternativas de evaluación, específicamente formativa para mejorar los procesos de aprendizaje. Los trabajos prácticos mediados por tecnologías de la información y la comunicación ofrecen un potencial significativo en los aprendizajes, desarrollo de habilidades y mejora en las actitudes de los estudiantes.

Introducción: la mayoría de las aplicaciones en patología digital se encuentran relacionadas con la oncológica, aunque se han propuesto algunos modelos recientes que permiten evaluar la utilidad en el diagnóstico histológico de microorganismos. Material y métodos: se realizó la siguiente revisión en la que se incluyeron 10 artículos publicados en inglés, que tienen como eje central el diagnóstico histopatológico de microorganismos y diferentes modelos de inteligencia artificial. Discusión: los diseñados se han probado para el diagnóstico de Helicobacter pylori, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Aspergillus, Mucorales y microorganismos relacionados con onicomicosis. Conclusiones: se recomienda el uso de la inteligencia artificial en el diagnóstico histopatológico de microorganismos como un campo emergente que refuerza la función del patólogo coordinador de los diferentes modelos, optimizando así su función y mejorando los tiempos de trabajo y los niveles de efectividad.

ABSTRACTMycobacterium abscessus is increasingly recognized as an emerging opportunistic pathogen causing severe lung diseases and cutaneous infections. However, treatment of M. abscessus infections remains particularly challenging, largely due to intrinsic resistance to a wide panel of antimicrobial agents. New therapeutic alternatives are urgently needed. Herein, we show that, upon limited irradiation with a blue-light source, newly developed porphyrin-peptide cage-type photosensitizers exert a strong bactericidal activity against smooth and rough variants of M. abscessus in planktonic cultures and in biofilms, at low concentrations. Atomic force microscopy unraveled important morphological alterations that include a wrinkled and irregular bacterial surface. The potential of these compounds for a photo-therapeutic use to treat M. abscessus skin infections requires further evaluations.IMPORTANCEMycobacterium abscessus causes persistent infections and is extremely difficult to eradicate. Despite intensive chemotherapy, treatment success rates remain very low. Thus, given the unsatisfactory performances of the current regimens, more effective therapeutic alternatives are needed. In this study, we evaluated the activity of newly described porphyrin-peptide cage-type conjugates in the context of photodynamic therapy. We show that upon light irradiation, these compounds were highly bactericidal against M. abscessus in vitro, thus qualifying these compounds for future studies dedicated to photo-therapeutic applications against M. abscessus skin infections.

Background: Lifetime risk of fragility fractures is 50% in post-menopausal women and 20% in men aged >50 years. Identifying people at high risk facilitates early intervention and reduction of biopsychosocial morbidity associated with these fractures. Aim: To explore if bone health assessment (BHA) rates differ between women and men aged ≥50 years with fragility fracture risk factors. Design & setting: A primary care-based cohort study in North Staffordshire, UK. Method: Patients were identified from the Consultations in Primary Care Archive (CiPCA) database between 2002 and 2014 with one or more fragility fracture risk factors (previous fractures, falls, and prolonged steroid use). Evaluation of BHA within 12 months of presentation of the first risk factor was carried out by searching for codes for fracture risk assessment tools (FRAX and QFracture), bone density measurement, specialist service referral, or if bone-protection medication was started. Results: A total of 15 581 patients with risk factors were identified; men represented 40.4% of the cohort. The study found 1172 (7.5%) had BHA performed within 1 year of presentation, and 8.9% of women and 5.5% of men had BHAs, which was found with strong statistical evidence (χ2 = 59.88, P = 1 × 10–14). This relationship prevailed after adjusting for other covariates, such as comorbidity and number of consultations, with an odds ratio of 1.25 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.08 to 1.43). Conclusion: This study has shown that rates of BHA were generally low and even lower in men compared with women. Primary care clinicians should be alert to fragility fracture risk factors in both men and women to enable early assessment and intervention.

ABSTRACTThe impacts of climate change are and will continue to be far-reaching, and environmental justice communities are disproportionately impacted due to environmental racism and related forms of oppression. Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology Education encourages that the connection between science and society be explicitly taught in science classrooms. Here, I describe a fictional case study where students decide how to allocate a budget at a non-profit organization tasked with mitigating environmental issues in a town that contains environmental justice communities. Students are each assigned a role in the community and must reach a consensus on their budget in small groups before the whole class votes on a consensus budget. Afterward, students perform a metacognitive activity that encourages them to reflect on the human health impacts of their decisions and how their role impacted their decision-making process. Quantitative and qualitative feedback from students shows that by the end of the course, students appreciate the importance of science literacy in understanding global issues and that they are able to connect environmental justice to their lives and coursework. This case study helps fill an unmet need in climate change education by allowing students to practice empathy in topics related to climate change and environmental justice.

Este artículo analiza la explotación de los estereotipos de la cultura colombiana en la serie Narcos (2015) producida y difundida por Netflix. La pregunta central es cómo el uso de los estereotipos del colombiano narco y violento se convierte en fuente fundamental para elaborar proyectos cinematográficos rentables, e impulsar dicho estereotipo a nivel mundial gracias a las plataformas de streaming como Netflix. Para ello se parte de un análisis conceptual sobre la formación de los estereotipos que dividen poblaciones entre los “normales” y los indeseables (quienes poseen una marca o estigma social) y su uso en producciones con imágenes de violencia espectacular que convierten las narcoseries en representantes del capitalismo gore. Luego, se describen algunas escenas de la serie de televisión para ejemplificar los usos de los estereotipos colombianos que, mezclados con elementos de la fascinante violencia, posibilitan la creación de un lenguaje que potencializa los estereotipos iniciales. Para concluir, se plantea la importancia y necesidad de generar espacios académicos de debate para construir una sistematización de saberes que conduzcan a la evolución de conocimiento alrededor de los usos de la violencia y la formación de estereotipos como lenguajes con la capacidad de pegarse y transmitirse a través de la industria cultural cinematográfica.

Abstract Clozapine is effective at reducing symptoms of treatment-resistant schizophrenia, but it can also induce several adverse outcomes including neutropenia and agranulocytosis. We used linear mixed-effect models and structural equation modelling to determine whether pharmacokinetic and genetic variables influence absolute neutrophil count in a longitudinal UK-based sample of clozapine users not currently experiencing neutropenia (N = 811). Increased daily clozapine dose was associated with elevated neutrophil count, amounting to a 133 cells/mm3 rise per standard deviation increase in clozapine dose. One-third of the total effect of clozapine dose was mediated by plasma clozapine and norclozapine levels, which themselves demonstrated opposing, independent associations with absolute neutrophil count. Finally, CYP1A2 pharmacogenomic activity score was associated with absolute neutrophil count, supporting lower neutrophil levels in CYP1A2 poor metabolisers during clozapine use. This information may facilitate identifying at-risk patients and then introducing preventative interventions or individualised pharmacovigilance procedures to help mitigate these adverse haematological reactions.

One of the primary opportunistic pathogens that can cause a wide range of diseases is Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This microorganism can become resistant to practically every antibacterial currently in use, including beta-lactam antibiotics. Its ability to proliferate as biofilm has been linked to, among other things, the failure of antimicrobial therapies. Due to a variety of virulence factors and host immune system modifications, P. aeruginosa is one of the most significant and common bacteria that colonize wounds and burns. A novel therapeutic option for treating these multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections is the combination of antibiotics and bacteriophages. This approach has been linked to improved biofilm penetration, a decreased selection of antibiotic and bacteriophage resistance, and an enhanced antibacterial impact. Combining the F1Pa bacteriophage and beta-lactam antibiotics reduced the viability of the mature biofilm of MDR P. aeruginosa strains and suppressed bacterial growth in vitro. F1Pa critically reduced the amount of biofilm that MDR P. aeruginosa clinical strains formed in the in vitro wound model. These findings highlight the bacteriophage F1Pa’s therapeutic potential as a prophylactic topical treatment against MDR pseudomonal infections in wounds and burns.

Clouds are key to understanding the atmosphere and climate, and a long series of satellite observations provide invaluable information to study their properties. EUMETSAT has published Release 1 of the Optimal Cloud Analysis (OCA) Climate Data Record (CDR), which provides a homogeneous time series of cloud properties of up to two overlapping layers, together with uncertainties. The OCA product is derived using the 15 min Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) measurements onboard Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) in geostationary orbit and covers the period from 19 January 2004 until 31 August 2019. This paper presents the validation of the OCA cloud-top pressure (CTP) against independent lidar-based estimates and the quality assessment of the cloud optical thickness (COT) and cloud particle effective radius (CRE) against a combination of products from satellite-based active and passive instruments. The OCA CTP is in good agreement with the CTP sensed by lidar for low thick liquid clouds and substantially below in the case of high ice clouds, in agreement with previous studies. The retrievals of COT and CRE are more reliable when constrained by solar channels and are consistent with other retrievals from passive imagers. The resulting cloud properties are stable and homogeneous over the whole period when compared against similar CDRs from passive instruments. For CTP, the OCA CDR and the near-real-time OCA products are consistent, allowing for the use of OCA near-real time products to extend the CDR beyond August 2019.

This work demonstrates the use of an ultrasonic methodology to monitor bubble density in a water column. A flow regime with droplet size distribution between 0.2 and 2 mm was studied. This range is of particular interest because it frequently appears in industrial flows. Ultrasound is typically used when the size of the bubbles is much larger than the wavelength (low frequency limit). In this study, the radius of the bubbles ranges between 0.6 and 6.8 times the wavelength, where wave propagation becomes a complex phenomenon, making existing analytical methods difficult to apply. Measurements in transmission–reception mode with ultrasonic transducers operating at frequencies of 2.25 and 5.0 MHz were carried out for different superficial velocities. The results showed that a time-averaging scheme is necessary and that wave parameters such as propagation velocity and the slope of the phase spectrum are related to the number of bubbles in the column. The proposed methodology has the potential for application in industrial environments.

The prevalence of carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa has dramatically increased over the last decade, and antibiotics alone are not enough to eradicate infections caused by this opportunistic pathogen. Phage therapy is a fresh treatment that can be administered under compassionate use, particularly against chronic cases. However, it is necessary to thoroughly characterize the virus before therapeutic application. Our work describes the discovery of the novel sequenced bacteriophage, vB_PaeP-F1Pa, containing an integrase, performs a phylogenetical analysis, describes its stability at a physiological pH and temperature, latent period (40 min), and burst size (394 ± 166 particles per bacterial cell), and demonstrates its ability to infect MDR and XDR P. aeruginosa strains. Moreover, this novel bacteriophage was able to inhibit the growth of bacteria inside preformed biofilms. The present study offers a road map to analyze essential areas for successful phage therapy against MDR and XDR P. aeruginosa infections, and shows that a phage containing an integrase is also able to show good in vitro results, indicating that it is very important to perform a genomic analysis before any clinical use, in order to prevent adverse effects in patients.

Bulk wave acoustic time-of-flight (ToF) measurements in pipes and closed containers can be hindered by guided waves with similar arrival times propagating in the container wall, especially when a low excitation frequency is used to mitigate sound attenuation from the material. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have emerged as a new paradigm for obtaining accurate ToF in non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and have been demonstrated for such complicated conditions. However, the generalizability of ToF-CNNs has not been investigated. In this work, we analyze the generalizability of the ToF-CNN for broader applications, given limited training data. We first investigate the CNN performance with respect to training dataset size and different training data and test data parameters (container dimensions and material properties). Furthermore, we perform a series of tests to understand the distribution of data parameters that need to be incorporated in training for enhanced model generalizability. This is investigated by training the model on a set of small- and large-container datasets regardless of the test data. We observe that the quantity of data partitioned for training must be of a good representation of the entire sets and sufficient to span through the input space. The result of the network also shows that the learning model with the training data on small containers delivers a sufficiently stable result on different feature interactions compared to the learning model with the training data on large containers. To check the robustness of the model, we tested the trained model to predict the ToF of different sound speed mediums, which shows excellent accuracy. Furthermore, to mimic real experimental scenarios, data are augmented by adding noise. We envision that the proposed approach will extend the applications of CNNs for ToF prediction in a broader range.

La administración pública para ser eficiente requiere cambiar el esquema burocrático por uno gerencial, por tanto, es fundamental la adopción de prácticas organizacionales innovadoras. En este sentido, se realiza una revisión de literatura que tiene como objetivo identificar las relaciones estudiadas entre la gestión del conocimiento y la innovación en el sector público, así como también las tendencias de investigación que involucren las mismas. La investigación se desarrolla bajo un enfoque cualitativo y su alcance es descriptivo; el estudio consideró un grupo de artículos identificados en la base de datos scopus y otros se agregaron a consideración de los autores del documento. Los resultados muestran un bajo número de documentos que se ocupan de estudiar la relación entre ambas temáticas. En los artículos identificados se evidencia la existencia de una estrecha relación de la gestión del conocimiento como un determinante para la innovación pública, específicamente desde el proceso de transferencia de conocimiento. Se concluye que este campo de estudio es prolífero, con abundantes oportunidades para investigar y comprender la gestión del conocimiento y la innovación en el sector público, dadas sus particularidades; asimismo se identificó la necesidad de vincular estos campos de conocimiento con temas de debate actual, tales como los living labs, las tecnologías de la cuarta revolución industrial, la gobernanza y la participación ciudadana.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) belongs to the Gram-positive cocci. This bacterium typically colonizes the nasopharyngeal region of healthy individuals. It has a distinct polysaccharide capsule – a virulence factor allowing the bacteria to elude the immune defense mechanisms. Consequently, it might trigger aggressive conditions like septicemia and meningitis in immunocompromised or older individuals. Moreover, children below five years of age are at risk of morbidity and mortality. Studies have found 101 S. pneumoniae capsular serotypes, of which several correlate with clinical and carriage isolates with distinct disease aggressiveness. Introducing pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) targets the most common disease-associated serotypes.

Abstract Despite exponential growth in ecological data availability, broader interoperability amongst datasets is needed to unlock the potential of open access. Our understanding of the interface of demography and functional traits is well-positioned to benefit from such interoperability. Here, we introduce MOSAIC, an open-access trait database that unlocks the demographic potential stored in the COMADRE, COMPADRE, and PADRINO open-access databases. MOSAIC data were digitised and curated through a combination of existing datasets and new trait records sourced from primary literature. In its first release, MOSAIC (v. 1.0.0) includes 14 trait fields for 300 animal and plant species: biomass, height, growth determination, regeneration, sexual dimorphism, mating system, hermaphrodism, sequential hermaphrodism, dispersal capacity, type of dispersal, mode of dispersal, dispersal classes, volancy, and aquatic habitat dependency. MOSAIC includes species-level phylogenies for 1,359 species and population-specific climate data. We identify how database integration can improve our understanding of traits well-quantified in existing repositories and those that are poorly quantified (e.g., growth determination, modularity). MOSAIC highlights emerging challenges associated with standardising databases and demographic measures.

Se presenta, desde una perspectiva histórico-cultural, la emergencia del modelo textual conocido como catecismo. Se hace un rápido recorrido en el tiempo para precisar el momento en el que el sustantivo catecismo empieza a designar al artefacto que lo significa. El análisis demuestra que dicho modelo textual es una invención pedagógica del siglo XVI que transformó la instrucción religiosa de los fieles cristianos en general y en particular la de los niños. Opinamos que esto se debió, en gran medida, al paso de una catequesis de impronta oral a una catequesis basada en el texto, elemento propio a la episteme del Renacimiento.

BackgroundObesity is a global epidemic affecting all age groups, populations, and income levels across continents, though is known to disproportionately affect socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. The causes of obesity are complex, informed by diet and weight practices, but shaped by social, commercial, and environmental factors and government policy. Consequently, a Whole System Approach (WSA)-which considers the many causes of obesity and shifts the focus away from individuals as points of intervention and puts an emphasis on understanding and improving the system in which people live-is required. This scoping review of reviews aims to: determine how WSAs to diet and healthy weight have been implemented and evaluated nationally and internationally; to determine what models or theories have been used to implement WSAs; describe how WSAs have been evaluated; determine if WSAs are effective; and to identify the contribution of the public and/or service users in the development of WSAs.MethodSystematic searches were carried out using CINAHL, Scopus, PsycINFO (ProQuest), the Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE. Included review papers were those that focused on the application of a whole system approach to diet and/or healthy weight, and/or reported the theory/model used to implement or simulate this approach. Databases were searched from 1995 to March 2022 using a combination of text and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH terms). In addition, reference sections of identified articles were examined for additional relevant articles. Covidence software was used to screen titles and abstracts from the electronic databases and resolve conflicts.ResultsA total of 20,308 articles were initially retrieved; after duplicate removal 7,690 unique title and abstracts were reviewed, and 110 articles were selected for full text review. On completion of full text review, 8 review articles were included for data extraction. These included: one umbrella review, four systematic reviews, a rapid review, and two literature reviews (one of which was on strategic reports written for government and public health policy). Evaluations of WSA were mainly process evaluations although health outcomes were assessed in some studies. Several conceptual frameworks or mathematical modelling approaches have been applied to WSAs for diet, healthy weight, and obesity to inform their planning or delivery, and to understand/map the associated systems. Common mathematical approaches include agent based or System Dynamic Modelling. Underlying both conceptual and mathematical models is an understanding how the elements of the complex systems impact each other to affect diet, healthy weight, and obesity. WSA implementations have reported some success in positively impacting health outcomes including reducing Body Mass Index, reducing sugary food intake, and increasing physical activity. Public and user involvement in WSA was not widely reported.ConclusionThe application of WSA to diet and healthy weight shows promise, yet the research is lagging behind their implementation. Further robust evidence for using WSA to address diet and healthy weight are required, including incorporating process and outcome evaluations (perhaps using established approaches such as Systems Dynamic Modelling). Furthermore, the analysis of epidemiological data alongside longitudinal process and outcome evaluation regarding the implementation of a WSA is required.

Purpose. The Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus bacterium is one of the leading causes of infection in humans. The lack of specific noninvasive techniques for diagnosis of staphylococcal infection together with the severity of its associated complications support the need for new specific and selective diagnostic tools. This work presents the successful synthesis of an immunotracer that targets the α-toxin released by S. aureus. Methods. [89Zr]Zr-DFO-ToxAb was synthesized based on radiolabeling an anti-α-toxin antibody with zirconium-89. The physicochemical characterization of the immunotracer was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), radio-thin layer chromatography (radio-TLC), and electrophoretic analysis. Its diagnostic ability was evaluated in vivo by positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging in an animal model of local infection-inflammation (active S. aureus vs. heat-killed S. aureus) and infective osteoarthritis. Results. Chemical characterization of the tracer established the high radiochemical yield and purity of the tracer while maintaining antibody integrity. In vivo PET/CT image confirmed the ability of the tracer to detect active foci of S. aureus. Those results were supported by ex vivo biodistribution studies, autoradiography, and histology, which confirmed the ability of [89Zr]Zr-DFO-ToxAb to detect staphylococcal infectious foci, avoiding false-positives derived from inflammatory processes. Conclusions. We have developed an immuno-PET tracer capable of detecting S. aureus infections based on a radiolabeled antibody specific for the staphylococcal alpha toxins. The in vivo assessment of [89Zr]Zr-DFO-ToxAb confirmed its ability to selectively detect staphylococcal infectious foci, allowing us to discern between infectious and inflammatory processes.

Abstract INTRODUCTION Virtually all people with Down syndrome (DS) develop neuropathology associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Atrophy of the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex (EC), as well as elevated plasma concentrations of neurofilament light chain (NfL) protein, are markers of neurodegeneration associated with late‐onset AD. We hypothesized that hippocampus and EC gray matter loss and increased plasma NfL concentrations are associated with memory in adults with DS. METHODS T1‐weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were collected from 101 participants with DS. Hippocampus and EC volume, as well as EC subregional cortical thickness, were derived. In a subset of participants, plasma NfL concentrations and modified Cued Recall Test scores were obtained. Partial correlation and mediation were used to test relationships between medial temporal lobe (MTL) atrophy, plasma NfL, and episodic memory. RESULTS Hippocampus volume, left anterolateral EC (alEC) thickness, and plasma NfL were correlated with each other and were associated with memory. Plasma NfL mediated the relationship between left alEC thickness and memory as well as hippocampus volume and memory. DISCUSSION The relationship between MTL gray matter and memory is mediated by plasma NfL levels, suggesting a link between neurodegenerative processes underlying axonal injury and frank gray matter loss in key structures supporting episodic memory in people with DS.

El conocimiento pedagógico del contenido ha sido una línea de investigación que da identidad a los profesores como profesionales de la educación. En el ejercicio de los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje, los programas de desarrollo profesional docente son relevantes debido a que promueven en los profesores procesos de aprendizaje y de reflexión en la práctica pedagógica. Esta revisión sistemática de literatura tiene como propósito identificar las tendencias de los procesos de investigación de los programas de desarrollo profesional docente sobre el conocimiento pedagógico del contenido entre los años 2017 y 2023. Se exploró en bases de datos Scopus y Web of Science. Se identificaron 64 publicaciones, en las que los procesos de reflexión del docente es la categoría más estudiada, que busca promover aspectos como el trabajo en equipo, la capacidad de síntesis, el planteamiento de objetivos, y la identificación de dificultades en la enseñanza; por otro lado, se encuentra que una de las estrategias más usadas que recogen los elementos del conocimiento pedagógico del contenido es la Lesson Study (LS).
