Antiferromagnetic insulators offer strategic advantages in spintronic applications because of their negligible stray fields and ultrafast magnetic dynamics. Control of their magnetization and readout of their magnetic state are essential for these applications but remain challenging. Here we report the electrical detection of room-temperature magnetization switching in the canted antiferromagnetic insulator LaFeO3, capped with a Pt or W overlayer. The observation of a large magneto-thermovoltage with an in-plane temperature gradient suggests that the mechanism is the swapping of spin currents in the antiferromagnet. This effect provides a sensitive electrical probe of the tiny net magnetization in the insulator, which can be manipulated by a magnetic field on the order of 10 mT. Our results highlight a new material class of insulating canted antiferromagnets for spintronics and spin caloritronics and suggests a method for the electrical readout of magnetic signals in an antiferromagnetic insulator. A combination of oxygen redox and Mn-based oxides would be the best option for high-energy density Li-ion batteries crucial for a sustainable society. The disordered rock-salt Li4Mn2O5 was recently reported to display very large capacity of 460 mAh/g with relative reversibility. Previous studies proposed the involvement of lattice oxygen redox in such intriguing electrochemical performance, whereas no direct evidence was presented. To clarify the charge compensation mechanism, we systematically investigated the evolution of the electronic structure of both Mn and O upon cycling via Mn/O K-edge XAS spectroscopy. Mn K-edge XAS unequivocally demonstrates the participation of Mn redox upon the initial stages of charging, yet changes are arrested at the high potentials, while O continues to evolve according to O K-edge XAS. Upon discharging, both Mn and O partially recover to their pristine states. The results highlight the significance of a disordered structure in maintaining the reversible redox chemistry of both transition metals and oxygen to design cathode materials with high energy density.

The spin crossover complex [Co(SQ)2(4-CN-py)2] exhibits a nonzero critical field for net alignment of the orbital magnetic moment and the net spin and orbital moments are sensitive to temperature.

Transformational increases in the storage capacity of battery cathodes could be achieved by tapping into the redox activity at oxide ligands in addition to conventional transition metal couples. Yet the key signatures that govern such lattice oxygen redox (LOR) have not been ascertained. Li3IrO4 has the largest reversible LOR, rendering it a unique model system. Here, X-ray spectroscopy and computational simulations reveal that LOR in Li3IrO4 is selectively compensated via O sites with 3 lone pairs, which are activated by Li/Ir disorder. The 2-electron LOR can be reversed to regenerate the initial state without unlocking competing bulk reactions observed in many other compounds. We uncover an intricate interplay between stoichiometry, O coordination and non-bonding states in LOR and pinpoint spectroscopic signatures. This interplay is indispensable to design materials with 3d metals that fulfill the promise of LOR to overcome the bottlenecks of current cathodes for future implementation in practical batteries.

Relations between specific physical features, attractiveness, and psychological adjustment of alcoholic inpatients were examined. Measures were obtained during the first week of admission and 6 weeks later (within 2 weeks of discharge). The nine physical features assessed formed three factors: face, facial expression, and body. The face factor was more strongly related to history of substance abuse than was either of the other factors. Further, the results suggested that alcoholism-related face features may be responsible for the documented relation between ratings of overall physical attractiveness and ratings of adjustment obtained at admission to a chemical dependency program; however, positive changes in body features less specifically related to a history of substance abuse (posture and grooming) are associated with counselors' ratings of improved patient adjustment over time.

Relations between psychological adjustment and physical attractiveness were examined longitudinally in substance abuse inpatients, controlling for the effects of length of drug abuse, length of inpatient stay, age, and socioeconomic status. Measures of adjustment and attractiveness were obtained during the first week of admission and six weeks later (within two weeks of discharge). Regression analyses indicated that initial attractiveness did not predict later adjustment, and initial adjustment did not predict later attractiveness. Partial correlation analyses revealed a positive association between attractiveness and adjustment at the first time point, but not at the later time point. These results suggest that physical attractiveness exerts only a temporary effect on judgments of adjustment in an inpatient setting. Attractiveness may affect decisions made when screening patients at mental health facilities, but may not affect decisions made over the full course of inpatient treatment.

Cyclopropanation of 2-enol derivatives of 17β-acetoxy-5α- androstan-3-one has been studied. The preparation of A-ring cyclopropanol derivatives from the Simmons–Smith reagent or dibromocarbene is described. Long range shielding effects of the cyclopropane ring in the 1Hmr spectrum are discussed.
