Coral propagation and out-planting are becoming commonly adopted as part of reef stewardship strategies aimed at improving reef resilience through enhanced natural recovery and rehabilitation. The coral microbiome has a crucial role in the success of the coral holobiont and can be impacted shortly after out-planting. However, long-term characterisation of the out-plant microbiome in relation to out-plant survival, and how these properties vary across reef sites, is unexplored. Therefore, at three reef sites on Opal Reef, Great Barrier Reef (Mojo, Sandbox and Rayban, 16°12′18″S 145°53′54″E), we examined bacterial communities associated with out-planted Acropora millepora coral and monitored coral survival over 12 months (February 2021–22). Bacterial communities of out-planted corals exhibited significant changes from donor colonies 7 days to 1.5 months after out-planting. Further, bacterial community composition differed for sites Sandbox and Rayban with low overall survival (0–43%) versus Mojo with higher overall survival (47–75%). After initial dissimilarity in bacterial communities of out-plants across sites at 1.5 months, and despite changes within sites over time, out-plants exhibited similar microbial communities across sites at 7 days and 6, 9 and 12 months. We hypothesise these trends reflect how bacterial communities are shaped by rapid changes in local environmental characteristics (e.g. from source to out-planting site), where out-plant bacterial communities ‘conform’ to out-planting site conditions. After initial changes, out-plant bacterial communities may then be under the influence of global environmental conditions—such as annual trends in temperature across seasons. Such outcomes indicate the importance of site selection in shaping initial coral bacterial communities and subsequent out-plant success. Importantly, continued differences in out-plant survival trajectory but similar bacterial communities across sites after 1.5 months indicate that other factors—apart from bacterial community changes—likely govern out-plant success in the longer term. Our research highlights the need to resolve drivers of small-scale site differences alongside higher resolution spatiotemporal monitoring of environmental conditions to distinguish key drivers of (i) microbial change during out-planting and (ii) out-plant survival to subsequently inform out-plant site selection to optimise future restoration efforts.

Efforts to manage coral reef declines are increasingly turning towards in situ propagation of corals to aid reef recovery. Understanding the factors that influence ‘success’ throughout the propagation process is therefore critical to ensure efforts are viable and cost-effective, yet the extent to which propagation practices potentially impact the underlying coral biology remains unknown. Given growing evidence for the importance of the coral microbiome, we examined the influence of nursery-based propagation and out-planting on the bacterial communities of two coral species–Acropora millepora and Pocillopora verrucosa–increasingly propagated on the northern Great Barrier Reef (Opal Reef). Bacterial communities of coral fragments were characterised over four months of nursery propagation (sampling points: zero, seven and 125 days) and one month of subsequent out-planting (sampling points: zero, one and 30 days). Bacterial community structure differed between A. millepora and P. verrucosa throughout the experiment and species-specific temporal dynamics were observed during the transplantation of corals into nurseries and subsequent out-planting back to the reef. P. verrucosa bacterial community structure remained stable over time in the natural reef environment and within the nursery. In contrast, A. millepora bacterial communities within the nursery significantly changed over time, whereas those associated with source colonies within the natural reef environment remained unchanged. However, after one month of out-planting, the composition, richness and diversity of A. millepora bacterial communities were not statistically different to those associated with the source colonies. We interpret the transient shift of A. millepora bacterial communities within the nursery as an impact of distinctive environmental conditions in nurseries compared to natural reef settings, and the greater responsiveness of A. millepora bacterial communities to environmental change. Our observations highlight that different coral species exhibit distinct microbial responses to coral propagation and out-planting, and we recommend that these should be considered when designing and scaling future coral management strategies.

Symbiosis between reef-building corals and unicellular algae (Symbiodiniaceae) fuels the growth and productivity of corals reefs. Capacity for Symbiodiniaceae to fix inorganic carbon (Ci) and translocate carbon compounds to the host is central to coral health, but how these processes change for corals thriving in environmental extremes remains largely unresolved. We investigate how a model coral—Pocillopora acuta—persists from a reef habitat into an adjacent extreme mangrove lagoon on the Great Barrier Reef. We combine respirometry and photophysiology measurements, Symbiodiniaceae genotyping, and 13C labelling to compare P. acuta metabolic performance across habitats, in relation to the Ci uptake and translocation capacity by symbionts’ autotrophy. We show that differences in P. acuta metabolic strategies across habitats align with a shift in dominant host-associated Symbiodiniaceae taxon, from Cladocopium in the reef to Durusdinium in the mangroves. This shift corresponded with a change in “photosynthetic strategy”, with P. acuta in the mangroves utilising absorbed light for photochemistry over non-photochemical quenching. Mangrove corals translocated similar proportions of carbon compared to the reefs, despite a lower Ci uptake. These trends indicate that coral survival in mangrove environments occurs through sustained translocation rate of organic compounds from coral symbionts to host.

Coral nursery and outplanting practices have grown in popularity worldwide for targeted restoration of degraded “high value” reef sites, and recovery of threatened taxa. Success of these practices is commonly gauged from coral propagule growth and survival, which fundamentally determines the return‐on‐effort (RRE) critical to the cost‐effectiveness and viability of restoration programs. In many cases, RRE has been optimized from past successes and failures, which therefore presents a major challenge for locations such as the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) where no local history of restoration exists to guide best practice. In establishing the first multi‐taxa coral nursery on the GBR (Opal Reef, February 2018), we constructed a novel scoring criterion from concurrent measurements of growth and survivorship to guide our relative RRE, including nursery propagule numbers (stock density). We initially retrieved RRE scores from a database of global restoration efforts to date (n = 246; 52 studies) to evaluate whether and how success commonly varied among coral taxa. We then retrieved RRE scores for Opal Reef using initial growth and survivorship data for six key coral taxa, to demonstrate that RRE scores were high for all taxa predominantly via high survivorship over winter. Repeated RRE scoring in summer is therefore needed to capture the full dynamic range of success where seasonal factors regulating growth versus survivorship differ. We discuss how RRE scoring can be easily adopted across restoration practices globally to standardize and benchmark success, but also as a tool to aid decision‐making in optimizing future propagation (and outplanting) efforts.

Antonioni, Berger, Magritte and Sontag, with their respective challenges to our perceptions of what is real and unreal, set the scene for a discussion of the tension between current policies and norms in higher education systems and the increasingly important need to introduce true interdisciplinarity in university programmes – specifically, here, with regard to the role of the humanities in business-related courses. It is argued that uncertainty and imperfection are key signposts to creativity and innovation. Uncertainty demands the constant search for possibility; imperfection provides the constant opportunity to improve and is therefore the inspiration for innovation. In an exploration focussing principally on the various potentialities of the study of literature, it is suggested that many initiatives to introduce the arts into non-humanities programmes have a common and significant limitation in that they are defined by a specific purpose – by an understandable and, in our current higher education environments, an inevitable need to specify what ‘impact’ the intervention will have on the skills and employability of the student. However, something much more radical is needed if what George Eliot called the ‘vital connections of knowledge’ are to be truly made, and the radical adjustment required runs directly counter to a culture that is dominated by the compulsion to demonstrate impact, set measurable targets and prioritize practical application.

George Charles Deering, born Georg Karl Dering (or perhaps Döring) in Dresden about 1690, practised as a physician in Nottingham from 1735 until his death in 1749. He was the author of an early flora covering the environs of Nottingham (1738) utilizing John Ray's nomenclature, and a posthumously published historical account of Nottingham (1751). He studied in Leiden under Herman Boerhaave and in Paris with the Jussieu brothers, and had close connections with Johann Jacob Dillenius and John Martyn the elder. Notable features of his flora are discussed, including the people with whom he worked, his first records of plants in England, and his early mention of phenology.

Global degradation of coral reefs has increased the urgency of identifying stress-tolerant coral populations, to enhance understanding of the biology driving stress tolerance, as well as identifying stocks of stress-hardened populations to aid reef rehabilitation. Surprisingly, scientists are continually discovering that naturally extreme environments house established coral populations adapted to grow within extreme abiotic conditions comparable to seawater conditions predicted over the coming century. Such environments include inshore mangrove lagoons that carry previously unrecognised ecosystem service value for corals, spanning from refuge to stress preconditioning. However, the existence of such hot-spots of resilience on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) remains entirely unknown. Here we describe, for the first time, 2 extreme GBR mangrove lagoons (Woody Isles and Howick Island), exposing taxonomically diverse coral communities (34 species, 7 growth morphologies) to regular extreme low pH (7°C) conditions. Coral cover was typically low (0.5 m diameter), with net photosynthesis and calcification rates of 2 dominant coral species (Acropora millepora, Porites lutea) reduced (20−30%), and respiration enhanced (11−35%), in the mangrove lagoon relative to adjacent reefs. Further analysis revealed that physiological plasticity (photosynthetic ‘strategy’) and flexibility of Symbiodiniaceae taxa associations appear crucial in supporting coral capacity to thrive from reef to lagoon. Prevalence of corals within these extreme conditions on the GBR (and elsewhere) increasingly challenge our understanding of coral resilience to stressors, and highlight the need to study unfavourable coral environments to better resolve mechanisms of stress tolerance.

Coral reefs are deteriorating worldwide prompting reef managers and stakeholders to increasingly explore new management tools. Following back-to-back bleaching in 2016/2017, multi-taxa coral nurseries were established in 2018 for the first time on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) to aid reef maintenance and restoration at a “high-value” location–Opal Reef–frequented by the tourism industry. Various coral species (n = 11) were propagated within shallow water (ca. 4-7m) platforms installed across two sites characterised by differing environmental exposure–one adjacent to a deep-water channel (Blue Lagoon) and one that was relatively sheltered (RayBan). Growth rates of coral fragments placed onto nurseries were highly variable across taxa but generally higher at Blue Lagoon (2.1–10.8 cm2 month-1 over 12 months) compared to RayBan (0.6–6.6 cm2 month-1 over 9 months). Growth at Blue Lagoon was largely independent of season, except for Acropora tenuis and Acropora hyacinthus, where growth rates were 15–20% higher for December 2018-July 2019 (“warm season”) compared to August-December 2018 (“cool season”). Survivorship across all 2,536 nursery fragments was ca. 80–100%, with some species exhibiting higher survivorship at Blue Lagoon (Acropora loripes, Porites cylindrica) and others at RayBan (A. hyacinthus, Montipora hispida). Parallel measurements of growth and survivorship were used to determine relative return-on-effort (RRE) scores as an integrated metric of “success” accounting for life history trade-offs, complementing the mutually exclusive assessment of growth or survivorship. RRE scores within sites (across species) were largely driven by growth, whereas RRE scores between sites were largely driven by survivorship. The initial nursery phase of coral propagation therefore appears useful to supplement coral material naturally available for stewardship of frequently visited Great Barrier Reef tourism (high-value) sites, but further assessment is needed to evaluate how well the growth rates and survival for nursery grown corals translate once material is outplanted.

The British diplomat William Henry Higdon (d. 20.5.1811, aged 69) acquired a collection of 250 dried pressed plants in Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1777. It had been compiled according to the Linnaean system by Pietro Busano (or perhaps Bassano), a botanist from Castelfranco. Busano’s Hortus siccus, dated 1767, antedates the first published plant list for mainland Italy, that of Turra (1780). As well as being an example of the early use of Linnaeus’ system of binomial nomenclature in southern Europe, the Hortus siccus is also of interest as a record of the flora of a region of northern Italy, as well as providing a selection of exotic plants cultivated in its gardens. Early Italian floristic literature is discussed, and a list of the plants is given in an Appendix together with their current scientific names.

Summary The genus Plumbago has a concentration of indigenous species in eastern tropical Africa and Madagascar: nine out of a total of between twelve and twenty-five species. In the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea, Vol. 5, published in 2006, only two indigenous species were accounted for: the widespread and common P. zeylanica and a new species, P. truncata, restricted to south-western Ethiopia. The name P. truncata was not formally validated. Since then more collections and field observations of Plumbago have been made in Ethiopia: after revision of the entire material it is concluded that P. truncata is conspecific with P. dawei, known from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar, and that another tropical East African species, P. montis-elgonis, known from Kenya and Tanzania, also occurs in south-western Ethiopia. In Ethiopia the two species are restricted to areas originally covered by moist forest: P. dawei to Transitional Rain Forest and Riverine Forest, while P. montis-elgonis to the lowermost zone of...

A catalogue of the living collections of Liverpool Botanic Garden, founded in 1802, was published in 1808. The Garden's herbarium was transferred to Liverpool Museum in 1909, and has now been documented on a computer database. A short history of the Garden is given along with an account of the succulent plants that were cultivated there during its early years (1802–1817).

Richard Bradley FRS (c. 1688–1732) was the author of the first illustrated book on succulent plants, Historia plantarum succulentarum (1716–1727), and editor of the first British horticultural journal. This bibliography, containing 140 main entries, attempts to list each of the separate editions (including translations) of his many works. It includes titles translated or adapted from French, Greek and German authors, along with some anonymous works written in his style.
