As the majority of marine organisms are water-breathing ectotherms, temperature and dissolved oxygen are key environmental variables that influence their fitness and geographic distribution. In line with the temperature-size rule (TSR), marine ectotherms in warmer temperatures will grow to a smaller maximum body size, yet the extent to which different species experience this temperature-size response varies. Here, we analysed the maximum body length of ten teleost fish species in line with temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration and geographic location (that encompasses multiple latent variables), across a broad (26°) latitudinal gradient throughout Norwegian waters. Our results showed that the two largest study species, spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) and cusk (Brosme brosme), display the strongest negative temperature-size response. We also observed smaller maximum body lengths for multiple species within the coldest extent of their temperature range, as well as parabolic relationships between maximum length and temperature for Atlantic wolffish (Anarhichas lupus) and beaked redfish (Sebastes mentella). The smaller maximum body lengths for high latitude species at both warm and cold temperature extremes of species’ thermal ranges corroborate the temperature-size mechanisms of the gill-oxygen limitation theory (GOLT), whereby spontaneous protein denaturation limits growth at both warm and cold temperatures.

The distribution of mangrove intra-specific biodiversity can be structured by historical demographic processes that enhance or limit effective population sizes. Oceanographic connectivity (OC) may further structure intra-specific biodiversity by preserving or diluting the genetic signatures of historical changes. Despite its relevance for biogeography and evolution, the role of oceanographic connectivity in structuring the distribution of mangrove’s genetic diversity has not been addressed at global scale. Here we ask whether connectivity mediated by ocean currents explains the intra-specific diversity of mangroves. A comprehensive dataset of population genetic differentiation was compiled from the literature. Multigenerational connectivity and population centrality indices were estimated with biophysical modeling coupled with network analyses. The variability explained in genetic differentiation was tested with competitive regression models built upon classical isolation-by-distance (IBD) models considering geographic distance. We show that oceanographic connectivity can explain the genetic differentiation of mangrove populations regardless of the species, region, and genetic marker (significant regression models in 95% of cases, with an average R-square of 0.44 ± 0.23 and Person’s correlation of 0.65 ± 0.17), systematically improving IBD models. Centrality indices, providing information on important stepping-stone sites between biogeographic regions, were also important in explaining differentiation (R-square improvement of 0.06 ± 0.07, up to 0.42). We further show that ocean currents produce skewed dispersal kernels for mangroves, highlighting the role of rare long-distance dispersal events responsible for historical settlements. Overall, we demonstrate the role of oceanographic connectivity in structuring mangrove intra-specific diversity. As global oceans continue to warm and deoxygenate, it is expected that marine ectotherms will reduce in body size resulting from the interactive effects of temperature and dissolved oxygen availability. A temperature-size response describes how wild populations of ectothermic species grow faster and reach a smaller size within warmer temperatures. While temperature-size responses are well observed in marine ectotherms, the mechanisms underpinning such a reduction in body size remain debated. Here, we analyse the relative influence of temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration, and geographic location (which encompasses multiple latent variables), on the maximum body length of four fish, one crustacean, and one squid species, which inhabit shallow to deep sea (1000 m) New Zealand waters across a temperature gradient of 1.5 to 18 °C. We found that all study species displayed a temperature-size response, with the strongest response exhibited by the largest species, hoki (Macruronus novaezelandiae). We also found that temperature was more important than dissolved oxygen concentration in determining maximum body length, as dissolved oxygen levels were at or near saturation in the study area. Our results suggest that larger-bodied species may experience the strongest temperature-size responses, and support expectations from the gill-oxygen limitation theory (GOLT) and the oxygen and capacity limited thermal tolerance (OCLTT) concept that increases in oxygen demand may be size- and temperature-dependent, thus driving a reduction in maximum body length of marine ectotherms with warming.

Stream fishes are restricted to specific environments with appropriate habitats for feeding and reproduction. Interactions between streams and surrounding landscapes influence the availability and type of fish habitat, nutrient concentrations, suspended solids, and substrate composition. Valley width and gradient are geomorphological variables that influence the frequency and intensity that a stream interacts with the surrounding landscape. For example, in constrained valleys, canyon walls are steeply sloped and valleys are narrow, limiting the movement of water into riparian zones. Wide valleys have long, flat floodplains that are inundated with high discharge. We tested for differences in fish assemblages with geomorphology variation among stream sites. We selected rivers in similar forested and endorheic ecoregion types of the United States and Mongolia. Sites where we collected were defined as geomorphologically unique river segments (i.e., functional process zones; FPZs) using an automated ArcGIS‐based tool. This tool extracts geomorphic variables at the valley and catchment scales and uses them to cluster stream segments based on their similarity. We collected a representative fish sample from replicates of FPZs. Then, we used constrained ordinations to determine whether river geomorphology could predict fish assemblage variation. Our constrained ordination approach using geomorphology to predict fish assemblages resulted in significance using fish taxonomy and traits in several watersheds. The watersheds where constrained ordinations were not successful were next analyzed with unconstrained ordinations to examine patterns among fish taxonomy and traits with geomorphology variables. Common geomorphology variables as predictors for taxonomic fish assemblages were river gradient, valley width, and valley slope. Significant geomorphology predictors of functional traits were valley width‐to‐floor width ratio, elevation, gradient, and channel sinuosity. These results provide evidence that fish assemblages respond similarly and strongly to geomorphic variables on two continents., This study demonstrates the utility of spatial analysis in predicting functional process zones and fish assemblage variation in endorheic basins and forest steppe ecoregions of two continents.

Significant advances have been made in interventions to maintain communication and personhood for individuals with neurodegenerative conditions. One innovation is Message Banking, a clinical approach first developed at Boston Children's Hospital (BCH). This paper outlines the Message Banking process as implemented at BCH, which includes the option of "Double Dipping," where banked messages are mined to develop personalized synthesized voices. More than a decade of experience has led to the evolution of six core principles underpinning the BCH process, resulting in a structured introduction of the associated concepts and practices with people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and their families. These principles highlight the importance of assigning ownership and control of the process to individuals with ALS and their families, ensuring that as a tool it is empowering and offers hope. Changes have been driven by feedback from individuals who have participated in the BCH process over many years. The success of the process has recently been extended through partnerships that allow the recorded messages to be used to develop individual personalized synthetic voices to complement banked messages. While the process of banking messages is technically relatively simple, the full value of the process should be underpinned by the values and principles outlined in this tutorial.

Swimming and flying animals across diverse taxa rely on the ability to maneuver for feeding1-6, escaping predation7-9, finding mates10-13, and navigating complex physical environments14-16. As such, the evolutionary success of these animals depends in part on propulsor designs that can efficiently change the orientation of the body during locomotion. We show that across 292 species of swimming and flying animals—including birds, fish, cetaceans, bats, insects, and sea turtles—the location of lateral maneuvering propulsors is tightly constrained at a location approximately 1/3 of the body length from the anterior end. A theoretical model for optimal turning is consistent with these observations, and it makes a further prediction of a non-trivial relationship between propulsor placement and body center of mass. That prediction is also confirmed by an additional, detailed morphometric analysis of 38 species. The present observations are notable in that a simple physical model appears sufficient to explain observed morphological diversity, and it suggests that propulsor placement in swimming and flying metazoans favors structural solutions that are adapted to enable efficient maneuvering in fluids.

The increased availability of environmental data with depth deriving from remote-sensing-based datasets permits more comprehensive modelling of the distribution of marine ecosystems in space and time. This research tests the potential of such objective modelling of marine ecosystems in four dimensions, spatial and temporal, to provide projections of how climate change may affect biodiversity, including aquaculture. This approach could be replicated for any regional seas. The Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, and East China Sea (BYECS) are marginal seas in the Northwest Pacific bounded by China, Korea, and Japan. Despite providing important ecological and economic services, their ecological conditions and ecosystems distribution have not yet been systematically mapped. This analysis used 13 marine environmental variables, measured on a three-dimensional and monthly basis during 1993-2019, to classify and map the BYECS region by k-means clustering using cosine similarity as distance function. There were 13 distinct areas identified that fit the definition of "ecosystems" that is, enduring regions demarcated by environmental characteristics. Of these 13 ecosystems, the Yellow Sea Cold Water (YSCW) Ecosystem is significant in relation to seasonal species composition and the newly developing deep-sea salmon caging aquaculture in the region. Projections of the potential size of this water mass under various climate-change scenarios based on analysis using the Non-Parametric Probabilistic Ecological Niche (NPPEN) model show that its volume may decrease 31 %-66 % in the future. Such a decrease would have impacts on the seasonal species' abundances in the BYECS marginal sea region and threaten the deep-sea cold-water salmon farming.

This case report illustrates a challenging case of worsening heart failure in a previously well-compensated patient with unclear etiology. Further workup revealed the patient’s cardiac resynchronization therapy-defibrillator (CRT-D) left ventricle (LV) lead was losing capture during positional changes. This case demonstrates the importance of device optimization, as well as electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring to elucidate possible causes of acute systolic heart failure.

Background Placement of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) has been described to compromise implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) defibrillation threshold (DFT). Elevated DFT will have negative consequences and increases the risk of ineffective ICD shocks, morbidity, and mortality. DFT testing is not routinely performed in clinical practice, despite this fact. Objective We describe the clinical characteristics of 7 LVAD patients who presented with multiple ineffective ICD shocks, along with the management strategy in such patients. Methods Seven patients (5 male, mean age 52.2 ± 9 years, 85.7% nonischemic cardiomyopathy) with an ICD in situ who progressed to NYHA class IV, ACC/AHA stage D chronic systolic congestive heart failure who underwent successful LVAD implantation presented to our institution in the setting of ventricular tachyarrhythmia and ineffective ICD shocks. Six patients underwent implantation of azygos and subclavian coils with subsequent DFT testing. The remaining patient was made comfort care. Results Five patients had successful DFT testing with azygos (n = 4) and subclavian (n = 1) defibrillation coil implantation. One patient had unsuccessful DFT testing despite evaluation of multiple shock vectors. There were no major or minor vascular complications in any of the cases. There were no procedural-related deaths. Conclusion This case series highlights the need for a systematic approach to management of ICDs and DFT testing in LVAD patients. The addition of new shock vectors with azygos and subclavian coil implantation may reduce DFT, shock burden, morbidity, and mortality.

Human impacts on the Earth’s biosphere are driving the global biodiversity crisis. Governments are preparing to agree on a set of actions intended to halt the loss of biodiversity and put it on a path to recovery by 2050. We provide evidence that the proposed actions can bend the curve for biodiversity, but only if these actions are implemented urgently and in an integrated manner.

This study examines how lay legal advocates meet petitioners’ extralegal and legal needs during the protection order process using survivor-defined advocacy. We conducted interviews with 20 lay legal advocates and identified four ways in which advocates provided services consistent with survivor-defined advocacy, including court accompaniment, safety planning, meeting petitioners’ extralegal needs, and centering the survivor as the decision-maker. We discuss our results in light of previous research on survivor-defined advocacy and describe the implications in the context of current domestic violence law and policy, including the need to enhance lay legal advocates’ ability to provide survivor-defined approaches in their services.

In recent decades, the ocean is becoming less oxygenated due to the combined effect of global warming and the spread of coastal eutrophication, with extensive consequences to marine ecosystems. Past mass extinctions were at least in part due to anoxic conditions in the oceans. Thus, we should be concerned about ongoing and projected declining availability of well-oxygenated habitats in the oceans. Tolerance to low oxygen is greater in smaller than larger, and less mobile than mobile taxa. The most vulnerable taxa to low oxygen are large active fish, and the least include mussels, hydrozoans, and jellyfishes. These photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) are compared with the results of semirelativistic R-matrix calculations. As reported by Augustin et al. [Phys. Rev. A 98, 033408 (2018)], it is found that the presence of autoionizing resonances within the bandwidth of the exciting FEL pulse strongly influences the PADs. In this work we investigate the effect of the confinement angle on self-colliding aluminium laser produced plasmas. More specifically, we apply V-shaped channel targets of different angles (90&deg, 60&deg, and 30&deg, ) and report both broadband and filtered time-resolved fast imaging measurements on the formation of such plasmas in ambient air. Based on the broadband measurements we suggest that the plasmas formed on the two inner walls of the V-shaped channel expand normally to the surface, interact with each other and possibly stagnate. The spectrally filtered fast imaging reveals the presence of a spatial distribution of different species within the plasmas and signatures of forced recombination.

River hydrogeomorphology is a major driver shaping biodiversity and community composition. Here, we examine how hydrogeomorphic heterogeneity expressed by Functional Process Zones (FPZs) in river networks is associated with fish assemblage variation. We examined this association in two distinct ecoregions in Mongolia expected to display different gradients of river network hydrogeomorphic heterogeneity. We delineated FPZs by extracting valley‐scale hydrogeomorphic variables at 10 km sample intervals in forest steppe (FS) and in grassland (G) river networks. We sampled fish assemblages and examined variation associated with changes in gradients of hydrogeomorphology as expressed by the FPZs. Thus, we examined assemblage variation as patterns of occurrence‐ and abundance‐based beta diversities for the taxonomic composition of assemblages and as functional beta diversity. Overall, we delineated 5 and 6 FPZs in river networks of the FS and G, respectively. Eight fish species were found in the FS river network and seventeen in the G, four of them common to both ecoregions. Functional richness was correspondingly higher in the G river network. Variation in the taxonomic composition of assemblages was driven by species turnover and was only significant in the G river network. Abundance‐based taxonomic variation was significant in river networks of both ecoregions, while the functional beta diversity results were inconclusive. We show that valley‐scale hydrogeomorphology is a significant driver of variation in fish assemblages at a macrosystem scale. Both changes in the composition of fish assemblages and the carrying capacity of the river network were driven by valley‐scale hydrogeomorphic variables. River network hydrogeomorphology as accounted for in the study has, therefore, the potential to inform macrosystem scale community ecology research and conservation efforts., Valley‐scale hydrogeomorphology plays a fundamental role structuring river fish assemblages.
