Deglaciation of the northwestern Laurentide Ice Sheet in the central Mackenzie Valley opened the northern portion of the deglacial Ice-Free Corridor between the Laurentide and Cordilleran ice sheets and a drainage route to the Arctic Ocean. In addition, ice sheet saddle collapse in this section of the Laurentide Ice Sheet has been implicated as a mechanism for delivering substantial freshwater influx into the Arctic Ocean on centennial timescales. However, there is little empirical data to constrain the deglaciation chronology in the central Mackenzie Valley where the northern slopes of the ice saddle were located. Here, we present 30 new 10Be cosmogenic nuclide exposure dates across six sites, including two elevation transects, which constrain the timing and rate of thinning and retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet in the area. Our new 10Be dates indicate that the initial deglaciation of the eastern summits of the central Mackenzie Mountains began at ∼15.8 ka (17.1–14.6 ka), ∼1000 years earlier than in previous reconstructions. The main phase of ice saddle collapse occurred between ∼14.9 and 13.6 ka, consistent with numerical modelling simulations, placing this event within the Bølling–Allerød interval (14.6–12.9 ka). Our new dates require a revision of ice margin retreat dynamics, with ice retreating more easterly rather than southward along the Mackenzie Valley. In addition, we quantify a total sea level rise contribution from the Cordilleran–Laurentide ice saddle region of ∼11.2 m between 16 and 13 ka.

The timing of Laurentide Ice Sheet deglaciation along its southwestern margin controlled the evolution of large glacial lakes and has implications for human migration into the Americas. Accurate reconstruction of the ice sheet's retreat also constrains glacial isostatic adjustment models and is important for understanding ice-sheet sensitivity to climate forcing. Despite its significance, retreat of the southwestern Laurentide Ice Sheet (SWLIS) is poorly constrained by minimum-limiting 14C data. We present 26 new cosmogenic 10Be exposure ages spanning the western Interior Plains, Canada. Using a Bayesian framework, we combine these data with geomorphic mapping, 10Be, and high-quality minimum-limiting 14C ages to provide an updated chronology. This dataset presents an internally consistent retreat record and indicates that the initial detachment of the SWLIS from its convergence with the Cordilleran Ice Sheet began by ca. 15.0 ka, concurrent with or slightly prior to the onset of the Bølling-Allerød interval (14.7–12.9 ka) and retreated >1200 km to its Younger Dryas (YD) position in ~2500 yr. Ice-sheet stabilization at the Cree Lake Moraine facilitated a meltwater drainage route to the Arctic from glacial Lake Agassiz within the YD, but not necessarily at the beginning. Our record of deglaciation and new YD constraints demonstrate deglaciation of the Interior Plains was ~60% faster than suggested by minimum 14C constraints alone. Numerical modeling of this rapid retreat estimates a loss of ~3.7 m of sea-level equivalent from the SWLIS during the Bølling-Allerød interval.

During the mid-Pliocene (Zanclean, ca. ∼ 3.9 Ma), parts of the Canadian High Arctic experienced mean annual temperatures that were 14–22°C warmer than today and supported diverse boreal-type forests. The landscapes of this vegetated polar region left behind a fragmented sedimentary record that crops out across several islands in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago as the Beaufort Formation and correlative strata. Paleoecological information from these strata provides a high-fidelity window onto Pliocene environments, and prominent fossil sites yield unparalleled insights into Cenozoic mammal evolution. Significantly, many of the strata reveal evidence for life-sediment interactions in a warm-climate Arctic, most notably in the form of extensive woody debris and phytoclast deposits. This paper presents original field data that refines the sedimentological context of plant debris accumulations from the anactualistic High Arctic forests, most notably at the ‘Fyles Leaf Beds' and ‘Beaver Pond' fossil-bearing sites in the ‘high terrace deposits' of central Ellesmere Island. The former is a remarkably well-preserved, leaf-rich deposit that is part of a complex of facies associations representing lacustrine, fluvio-deltaic and mire deposition above a paleotopographic unconformity. The latter yields tooth-marked woody debris within a peat layer that also contains a rich assemblage of vertebrate and plant fossils including abundant remains from the extinct beaver-group Dipoides. Here we present sedimentological data that provide circumstantial evidence that the woody debris deposit at Beaver Pond could record dam-building in the genus, by comparing the facies motif with new data from known Holocene beaver dam facies in England. Across the Pliocene of the High Arctic region, woody debris accumulations are shown to represent an array of biosedimentary deposits and landforms including mires, driftcretions, woody bedforms, and possible beaver dams, which help to contextualize mammal fossil sites, provide facies models for high-latitude forests, and reveal interactions between life and sedimentation in a vanished world that may be an analogue to that of the near-future.

The Foothills Erratics Train consists of large quartzite blocks of Rocky Mountains origin deposited on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountain Foothills in Alberta between ~53.5°N and 49°N. The blocks were deposited in their present locations when the western margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) detached from the local ice masses of the Rocky Mountains, which initiated the opening of the southern end of the ice-free corridor between the Cordilleran Ice Sheet and the LIS. We use 10Be exposure dating to constrain the beginning of this decoupling. Based on a group of 12 samples well-clustered in time, we date the detachment of the western LIS margin from the Rocky Mountain front to ~14.9 ± 0.9 ka. This is ~1000 years later than previously assumed, but a lack of a latitudinal trend in the ages over a distance of ~500 km is consistent with the rapid opening of a long wedge of unglaciated terrain portrayed in existing ice-retreat reconstructions. A later separation of the western LIS margin from the mountain front implies higher ice margin–retreat rates in order to meet the Younger Dryas ice margin position near the boundary of the Canadian Shield ~2000 years later.

Assessing initiation of rock-slope deformation and paleo-slip rates of rockslides is important to understand the impact of climate variability - in particular permafrost changes - on rockslide activity. Norway, with 6–6.5% permafrost cover today, continues to experience spatial and temporal variations in permafrost. We assess the timing of deformation initiation and potential late Pleistocene and Holocene sliding rates for six active gradually deforming rockslides in Norway using terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide dating. We evaluate the timing and rates of deformation considering a possible climate control by modelling the permafrost evolution since deglaciation for three rockslide locations: Mannen, Revdalsfjellet and Gamanjunni 3. Deformation at these sites started during or at the end of the Holocene Thermal Maximum (HTM), between 8 and 4.5 ka when permafrost in those regions was mostly degraded. At two low elevation sites, Oppstadhornet and Skjeringahaugane in western Norway, where permafrost remained absent during the Holocene, deformation started shortly after deglaciation. The timings suggest that the presence of permafrost in Norwegian rock slopes had a stabilizing effect over several millennia after deglaciation. Vertical transects of exposure ages along outcropping sliding surfaces indicate that pre-historical sliding rates seem to have decreased throughout the Holocene at all analysed rock-slope instabilities. However, modern measured sliding rates at four sites indicate a moderate to strong acceleration, compared to previous deformation rates. Three of these sites are located above or at the lower limit of alpine permafrost, where recent permafrost degradation may enhance slope destabilisation. The implication is that slope failures may become more frequent during accelerated warming in the Arctic and Subarctic. © 2020 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Ltd. Terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) exposure dating of boulders is frequently used for rockslide chronology. A well-recognized source of error that cannot be readily quantified is related to inheritance of TCN produced in the rock prior to failure. The effect of inheritance is not constant and will be greatest in the instance of a very recent shallow failure on a high-altitude surface with low event frequencies. We illustrate the effect by measuring 10Be concentrations in six boulders exposed for only 9 years before sampling, on a rock avalanche in Puerto Aysen, Chile. Their apparent exposure ages range from 216 ± 76 to 1755 ± 436 years. The mean apparent exposure age of a statistical cluster of three samples exceeds the real exposure time by 345 ± 36 years (3800%), implying that all sampled rock surfaces experienced pre-failure TCN production. A reconstructed pre-failure topography enables the analysis of possible pre-failure boulder positions and an estimate of the range of possible inherited concentrations along a 2D transect. Despite a maximum failure-mass thickness of 110 m, the boulders seem to have originated from depths shallower than 14 m. Because of the likelihood that large boulders, prioritized for TCN sampling, originate from relatively shallow pre-failure depths owing to surface-near transport with minor turbation, it is necessary to consider potentially inherited TCN concentrations and their effect on the age determination, especially in cases of young rockslides, where the commonly adjusted effects of boulder erosion and snow, ash, or vegetation shielding are negligible in comparison.

The mechanical feasibility of co-seismic displacement along low-angle normal fault systems remains an outstanding problem in tectonics. In the southwestern Basin and Range of North America, large magnitude extension during Miocene – Pliocene time was accommodated along a regionally extensive system of low-angle detachment faults. Whether these faults remain active today and, if so, whether they rupture during large earthquakes are questions central to understanding the geodynamics of distributed lithospheric deformation and associated seismic hazard. Here we evaluate the geometric and kinematic relationships of fault scarps developed in Pleistocene – Holocene alluvial and lacustrine deposits with low-angle detachment faults observed along the western flank of the Panamint Range, in eastern California. We combine analysis of high-resolution topography generated from airborne LiDAR and photogrammetry with a detailed chronology of alluvial fan surfaces and a calibrated soil chronosequence to characterize the recent activity of the fault system. The range-front fault system is coincident with a low-angle (15-20°), curviplanar detachment fault that is linked to strike-slip faults at its southern and northern ends. Fanglomerate deposits in the hanging wall of the detachment are juxtaposed with brecciated bedrock in the footwall across a narrow fault surface marked by clay-rich gouge. Isochron burial dating of the fanglomerate using the 26Al and 10Be requires displacement in the past ~800 ka. The degree of soil development in younger alluvial deposits in direct fault contact with the footwall block suggest displacement along the main detachment in the past as ~80-100 ka. The geometry of recent fault scarps in Holocene alluvium mimic range-scale variations in strike of the curviplanar detachment fault, suggesting that scarps merge with the detachment at depth. Moreover, fault kinematics inferred from displaced debris-flow levees and from fault striae on the bedrock range front are consistent with slip on a low-angle detachment system beneath the valley. Finally, paleoseismic results from a trench at the southern end of the fault system suggest 3-4 surface ruptures during past ~4-5 ka, the most recent of which (MRE) occurred ~330-485 cal yr BP. Scarps related to the MRE can be traced for at least ~50 km northward along the range front and imply surface displacements of 2-4 meters during this event. Thus, we conclude that ongoing dextral shear along the margin of the Basin and Range is, in part, accommodated by co-seismic slip along low-angle detachment faults in Panamint Valley. Our results have important implications for the interaction of fault networks and seismic hazard in the region.

The northwestern sector of the Laurentide Ice Sheet coalesced with the Cordilleran Ice Sheet over the southern Mackenzie Mountains, and with local montane glaciers along the eastern slopes of the Mackenzie Mountains. Recent numerical modelling studies have identified rapid ice sheet thinning in this region as a major contributor to Meltwater Pulse 1A. Despite advances in remote sensing and numerical dating methods, the configuration and chronology of the northwestern sector of the Laurentide Ice Sheet has not been reconstructed in detail. The last available studies date back to the 1990s, where field surveys and mapping from aerial imagery were used to reconstruct the Last Glacial Maximum glacier extents in the Mackenzie Mountains. Cross-cutting relationships between glacial landforms and a series of 36Cl cosmogenic nuclide dates were used to propose a deglacial model involving a significant ice readvance in the region. However, the chronological evidence supporting the readvance is uncertain because the individual ages are few and poorly clustered. Here we present an updated map of the Last Glacial Maximum glacial limits and the recessional record in the Mackenzie Mountains, based on glacial geomorphological mapping from the ArcticDEM. Sixteen new 10Be dates from four sites that were previously glaciated by the Laurentide Ice Sheet constrain the deglacial sequence across the region. These dates indicate ice sheet detachment from the eastern Mackenzie Mountains at ~16 ka as summits became ice-free. The Mackenzie Valley at ~ 65 °N became ice free at ~ 13 – 14 ka, towards the end of the Bølling-Allerød warm period. These chronological constraints on the deglaciation of the Laurentide Ice Sheet allow us to reinterpret landform relationships in the Mackenzie Mountains to reconstruct the ice sheet retreat pattern. Our updated model of the LGM extent and timing of deglaciation in the Mackenzie Mountains provides important constraints for quantifying past sea level contributions and numerical modelling studies.

Wounded Moose type paleosols developed on remnant deposits of Late Pliocene to Early Pleistocene [pre-Reid] Cordilleran Ice Sheet [CIS] glaciations in central Yukon, Canada. It is an important regional soil-geomorphic marker at the boundary between early CIS advances and the non-glaciated regions of Yukon and Alaska. Yet, at present, its age is poorly constrained between the Reid [0.2 Ma] and earliest [2.84 Ma] CIS advances. Here, we apply depth profiles of in situ-produced cosmogenic 26Al and 10Be to obtain both a minimum exposure age [1.12+0.44/−0.36 Ma, 2σ] and maximum erosion rate [1.1+0.9/−0.5 m Myr−1] for the Wounded Moose paleosol. Our results show that this soil formed under exceptionally stable conditions [max erosion rate similar to polar bedrock erosion rates] and that it pre-dates the emergence of the 100 ka [eccentricity] climate cycle. Contrasting our results from single- and joint-nuclide depth profile models reveals a significant discrepancy between calculated and effective 10Be and 26Al production rates [40–65% of expected values]. We interpret this discrepancy as the result of intermittent loess cover—with a time-averaged depth between 60 and 110 cm—which significantly reduced apparent exposure ages obtained from the single–nuclide model. The observation of such a significant loess-cover effect on cosmogenic nuclide production has implications for exposure dating in glacial and periglacial environments; a multi-nuclide sampling strategy is required to quantify this effect.

Arctic warming is expected to accelerate northward migration of the boreal zone, altering the boreal wildfire regime, with changes in fire frequency, intensity, size, and fire season length. The closest analogue to these future high latitude climate conditions occurred during the Pliocene Epoch (2.58–5.33 Ma). Palaeoenvironmental reconstructions at four Pliocene-aged sites across the Canadian Arctic Archipelago reveal that boreal forest occurred at the southern-most site on Banks Island (74.30°N), while open forest or tundra-forest ecosystems existed further north, characterized by species tolerant of low to moderate fire intensity. The climate that supported these ecosystems was much warmer and wetter than the current climate of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Charcoal was discovered in samples across all sites, suggesting that wildfire was ubiquitous within these ecosystems and climate regimes. The reflectance of the charcoal is consistent with crowning fire or a mixed fire regime on Banks Island and a surface fire regime on Meighen and Ellesmere islands. Boreal forest in southern Ontario, Canada, and open taiga are potential analogues for southern and northern Pliocene Arctic ecosystems , respectively.

Three glacier systems—an ice sheet with a large marine-based ice stream, an ice cap, and an alpine glacier complex—coalesced on Cumberland Peninsula during the Late Wisconsinan. We combine high-resolution mapping of glacial deposits with new cosmogenic nuclide and radiocarbon age determinations to constrain the history and dynamics of each system. During the Middle Wisconsinan (Oxygen Isotope Stage 3, OIS-3) the Cumberland Sound Ice Stream of the Laurentide Ice Sheet retreated well back into Cumberland Sound and the alpine ice retreated at least to fiord-head positions, a more significant recession than previously documented. The advance to maximal OIS-2 ice positions beyond the mouth of Cumberland Sound and beyond most stretches of coastline remains undated. Partial preservation of an over-ridden OIS-3 glaciomarine delta in a fiord-side position suggests that even fiord ice was weakly erosive in places. Moraines formed during deglaciation represent stillstands and re-advances during three major cold events: H-1 (14.6 ka), Younger Dryas (12.9–11.7 ka), and Cockburn (9.5 ka). Distinctly different responses of the three glacial systems are evident, with the alpine system responding most sensitively to Bolling-Allerod warming whereas the larger systems retreated mainly during Pre-Boreal warming. While the larger ice masses were mainly influenced by internal dynamics, the smaller alpine glacier system responded sensitively to local climate effects. Asymmetrical recession of the alpine glacier complex indicates topoclimatic control on deglaciation and perhaps migration of the accumulation area toward moisture source.

The long-term evolution of rock slope failures involves different stages, from incipience of slope instability to catastrophic failure, through a more or less long-lasting slope deformation phase that also involves creeping or sliding. Topography, lithology, and structural inheritance are the main intrinsic factors that influence this evolution. Here, we investigate the role of these intrinsic factors on the rock slope failure development of the Ivasnasen and Vollan rock slopes (Sunndal Valley, western Norway) using a multitechnique approach that includes geomorphologic and structural field mapping, kinematic analysis, terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide exposure dating, topographic reconstruction, and deformation quantification. Ivasnasen is a rock slope failure complex with several past rock slope failures and a present unstable rock slope, located on a cataclinal NW-facing slope and developed in augen gneiss. Vollan on the opposite valley side is a deep-seated gravitational slope deformation (DSGSD) affecting the whole mountainside, developed in quartzite in the upper part and micaschist in the lower part. These different lithologies belong to different nappe complexes that were emplaced and folded into a series of syn- and anticlines during the Caledonian orogeny. These folds lead to different lithologies being exposed in different structural orientations on the opposite valley flanks, which in turn leads to different types and evolution of rock slope failures. At Ivasnasen the 45°–55° NW-dipping ductile foliation allowed for a fairly simple planar sliding mechanism for the 1.2 million m 3 post-glacial rock slope failure. Failure occurred ca. 3.3 ka ago after a short period of prefailure deformation. For the present 2.2 million m 3 unstable rock slope at Ivasnasen, a steepening of the foliation at the toe impedes such a mechanism and up to 10 m of displacement has not lead to a catastrophic failure yet. The Vollan DSGSD is characterized by a steep major back scarp with its up to 130-m-wide graben, which opened along the subvertical foliation in the quartzite, and a conspicuous array of counter-scarps in the micaschist. The morphologic features are explained by a flexural toppling mechanism in the micaschist, which likely initiated in the lower slope section and propagated retrogressively until reaching the massive quartzite at the back scarp. Flexural toppling cannot solely explain the total along-slope displacement of up to 200 m, i.e., an elongation of 28%. Creep along a basal shear zone, which may have developed in the hinge zone of the flexural toppling, combined with shallow valley-dipping joints, likely accounts for the large elongation. Implications of this study for the hazard assessment of unstable rock slopes in Norway include the relatively rapid development of instabilities in cataclinal slopes and the important insights on long-term displacement rates gained from cosmogenic nuclide dating for a better understanding of the evolution of unstable rock slopes.

Subhorizontal lake shorelines allow a geodynamic test of the size and extent of a hypothesized paleo-lake in central Tibet, the East Qiangtang Lake (EQL), during the last interglacial period (Marine Isotope Stage [MIS] 5e). Reconstructions based on relict lake deposits suggest that the EQL would have been ~400 m deep and over ~66,000 km2. Models of flexural rebound driven by lake recession predict that shorelines near the EQL center, at the present-day location of Siling Co, would have rebounded 60-90 m above their initial elevation. New 36Cl chronology of the highest relict shorelines around Siling Co indicates that they reflect lake levels between 110-190 ka. These shorelines, however, are presently >300 m below their predicted elevations, implying a substantially smaller water load. Our results reveal that the expansion of Tibetan lakes during MIS 5e was relatively limited. Instead, individual lakes were supplied by river networks, much as they are today.

Five large gravitational slope deformation features (GSDFs) in the Lookout Mountain-Tablelands region of western Newfoundland exemplify bedrock slope instabilities in eastern Canada. The Lookout Hills GSDF (8.3 km3) on Bonne Bay (glacial trough) may be the largest GSDF in eastern Canada. It appears to be a post-glacial feature, has vertical total displacement up to 100 m, and exhibits a complex arrangement of scarps and fissures. Four other large GSDFs occur along the walls of glacial troughs in the Tablelands of Western Newfoundland with estimated volumes between 1 and 2 km3. All five features are above steep slopes and have the potential to become catastrophic massive rock slope failures. While it is tempting to link the failure in all 5 GSDFs to the removal of laterally supporting bedrock or glacier ice during the late Pleistocene, the location of these deformations may simply relate to slope steepness. Non-glacial, first order controls on the deformation include changes in the effective shear strength and opening of fractures owing to Holocene permafrost thaw may have induced failure. No discernible movement has occurred in the Tablelands GSDFs in the last 50 years. Nevertheless, the Lookout Hills GSDF requires more detailed study to determine the potential for future movement as rapid collapse into the adjacent fjord may present significant risk to coastal residents, infrastructure and marine ecosystems.

The Smoking Hills area in the western Canadian Arctic was purported to contain a regionally rare Quaternary stratigraphic section with multiple, local ice cap-derived tills and a long chronology constrained by palaeomagnetic markers. We present a fundamental revision of previous glacial and magnetostratigraphic interpretations based on detailed sedimentological and structural analyses of the main stratigraphic section and many new exposures, cosmogenic nuclide isochron burial dating, and a systematic reconstruction of the geomorphology and landscape evolution using a glacial landsystem approach. We demonstrate that the Smoking Hills area was fully glaciated during the last (Wisconsinan) glaciation. Previously reported tills ascribed to multiple glaciations represent instead a complex facies sequence of glacitectonic thrust stacking of Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) sourced diamictons, glacilacustrine and glacifluvial deposits, together with previously unidentified, poorly-consolidated Cretaceous bedrock rafts and deformed intraclasts. Much of this sedimentation and glacitectonic activity dates to the last (Wisconsinan) glaciation and can be reconciled with a polythermal ice sheet marginal landsystem signature, wherein ice-cored moraine belts are developed over subglacial bedforms (flutings) arranged in discrete flowsets. The flowsets record the complex interaction of ice streams nourished by ice flowing from three main sources: Great Bear Lake to the south, Amundsen Gulf (Franklin Bay) to the east and Liverpool Bay (Mackenzie Valley) to the southwest. Decoupling of the ice margins of these three ice sources gave rise to interlobate ice-dammed lake development over the lower Horton River area during final deglaciation. A cosmogenic 26Al/10Be isochron burial age of 2.9 ± 0.3 Ma (1σ, n = 4) from the lowermost glacial diamicton and glacitectonite sequence provides evidence of perhaps the earliest continental glaciation of this region. This deposit postdates, or is perhaps a later re-advance of the same initial glaciation that produced widespread glacitectonic disturbance of bedrock in preglacial valley networks and early glacifluvial and glacilacustrine deposits containing an ice wedge pseudomorph. Subsequent glaciations have largely removed or cannibalised pre-existing records to construct complex till and glacitectonite stacks that contain reworked organics with non-finite radiocarbon ages. One site preserves buried “old” glacier ice in which prominent ice wedges had formed during an interglacial permafrost phase and were then deformed down-flow by the LIS during the Wisconsinan glaciation.

A late Pleistocene to Holocene alluvial stratigraphy has been established for the basins of La Paz and San Jose del Cabo, in the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, Mexico. Six discrete alluvial units (Qt1 through Qt6) were differentiated across the region using a combination of geomorphologic mapping, sedimentological analysis, and soil development. These criteria were supported using radiocarbon, optically stimulated luminescence and cosmogenic depth-profile geochronology. Major aggradation started shortly after ∼70 ka (Qt2), and buildup of the main depositional units ended at ∼10 ka (Qt4). After deposition of Qt4, increasing regional incision of older units and the progressive development of a channelized alluvial landscape coincide with deposition of Qt5 and Qt6 units in a second, incisional phase. All units consist of multiple 1–3 m thick alluvial packages deposited as upper-flow stage beds that represent individual storms. Main aggradational units (Qt2-Qt4) occurred across broad (>2 km) channels in the form of sheetflood deposition while incisional stage deposits are confined to channels of ∼0.5–2 km width. Continuous deposition inside the thicker (>10 m) pre-Qt5 units is demonstrated by closely spaced dates in vertical profiles. In a few places, disconformities between these major units are nevertheless evident and indicated by partly eroded buried soils. The described units feature sedimentological traits similar to historical deposits formed by large tropical cyclone events, but also include characteristics of upper-regime flow sedimentation not shown by historical sediments, like long (>10 m) wavelength antidunes and transverse ribs. We interpret the whole sequence as indicating discrete periods during the late Pleistocene and Holocene when climatic conditions allowed larger and more frequent tropical cyclone events than those observed historically. These discrete periods are associated with times when insolation at the tropics was higher than the present-day conditions, determined by precessional cycles, and modulated by the presence of El Nino-like conditions along the tropical and northeastern Pacific. The southern Baja California alluvial record is the first to document a precession-driven alluvial chronology for the region, and it constitutes a strong benchmark for discrimination of direct tropical influence on any other alluvial record in southwestern North America.

Standing over 2 km above the surrounding topography and flanked by orogen-scale strike-slip faults, the Hangay Dome in central Mongolia is characterized by long wavelength high topography, basaltic eruptions spanning 30 million years, and an abundance of flat-topped summit plateaus. However, despite decades of research, the origin and timing of the intraplate Hangay Dome uplift continues to be debated. Using Landsat imagery, GIS, and cosmogenic beryllium-10, we employ geomorphic investigations of (1) paleotopography preserved beneath basalt flows of known age, (2) erosion rates at various temporal scales, and (3) the relative contribution of glacial activity to total erosion to provide insight into the nature of landscape evolution in the Egiin Davaa region of the central Hangay Dome since the middle Miocene. The impact of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) deglaciation on Northern Hemisphere early Holocene climate can be evaluated only once a detailed chronology of ice history and sea-level change is established. Foxe Peninsula is ideally situated on the northern boundary of Hudson Strait, and preserves a chronostratigraphy that provides important glaciological insights regarding changes in ice-sheet position and relative sea level before and after the 8.2 ka cooling event. We utilized a combination of radiocarbon ages, adjusted with a new locally derived ΔR, and terrestrial in-situ cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) exposure ages to develop a chronology for early-Holocene events in the northern Hudson Strait. A marine limit at 192 m a.s.l., dated at 8.1–7.9 cal. ka BP, provides the timing of deglaciation following the 8.2 ka event, confirming that ice persisted at least north of Hudson Bay until then. A moraine complex and esker morphosequence, the Foxe Moraine, relates to glaciomarine outwash deltas and beaches at 160 m a.s.l., and is tightly dated at 7.6 cal. ka BP with a combination of shell dates and exposure ages on boulders. The final rapid collapse of Foxe Peninsula ice occurred by 7.1–6.9 cal. ka BP (radiocarbon dates and TCN depth profile age on an outwash delta), which supports the hypothesis that LIS melting contributed to the contemporaneous global sea-level rise known as the Catastrophic Rise Event 3 (CRE-3).

Long-term rates of subaerial and episodic subglacial erosion by predominately cold-based ice cover are determined for tors on weathered plateaus on Cumberland Peninsula. By measuring terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in differentially weathered surfaces on a given tor, we reconstruct the complex exposure and erosion history involving recurring cold-based ice cover. The style and rate of subaerial and subglacial erosion at multiple tor sites on Cumberland Peninsula are assessed with a Monte Carlo approach that computes plausible exposure histories based on a proxy record of global ice volume. The CRONUS-Earth and CRONUS-EU Projects have recently examined the reproducibility of cosmogenic nuclide measurements and the ability of cosmogenic-production models to fit high-quality global calibration data sets. In both cases, although results are adequate for present geochronological needs, they must be improved to meet future demands. We recommend that the cosmogenic-nuclide community embark on a continuing effort to understand the sources of the remaining model-versus-data discrepancy, and that in the meanwhile all cosmogenic ages be benchmarked against reference ages calculated in a consistent fashion. We also recommend that interlaboratory reference materials be routinely analyzed along with samples and blanks, that the results be tracked, and that methods of achieving consistency and precision in sample preparation and analysis be shared within the community. We also recommend additional organization of the community to facilitate the use of intercomparison materials, foster analytical improvements, oversee the evolution of the community age calculator, and synthesize ongoing calibration efforts.

Chlorine-36 production rates obtained from different geological calibration studies (e.g. Evans et al., 1997; Phillips et al., 2001; Schimmelpfennig et al., 2011; Stone et al., 1996; Swanson and Caffee, 2001) vary significantly, principally because of the many reactions contributing to the production of this nuclide. The CRONUS-Earth Project has provided high-quality geological calibration sites, including Lake Bonneville, Peru, and Scotland, for a large-scale calibration of 36Cl production rates. Three sites were used to calibrate the K and Ca spallation pathways for 36Cl production yielding production rates of 56.0 ± 4.1 at 36Cl (g Ca)−1 yr−1 and 155 ± 11 at 36Cl (g K)−1 yr−1 respectively, using Lifton-Sato-Dunai scaling (LSDn). The low-energy production parameter, Pf(0), was calibrated separately using CRONUS-Earth data from the Bonneville and Baboon Lakes sites where Cl concentrations were higher, and yielded a value of 759 ± 180 neutrons (g air)−1 yr−1. There is significant uncertainty associated with this pathway due to the sensitivity of this reaction to environmental conditions. The uncertainties associated with the calibrated production parameters were estimated based on the variance of calculated ages from independent ages for an independent secondary dataset.

Geological surface-exposure dating using cosmogenic-nuclide accumulation became a practical geochronological endeavor in 1986, when the utility of 10Be, 26Al, 36Cl, and 3He were all demonstrated. In response to the lack of a common basis for quantifying analytical consistency and calibrating cosmogenic-nuclide production, the CRONUS-Earth Project in the U.S. was started in 2005, along with a European partner project, CRONUS-EU. The goal of the CRONUS-Earth Project was to improve the accuracy and precision of terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide dating in general, focusing especially on nuclide production rates and their variation with altitude, latitude, and time, and to attempt to move from empirically based methods to ones with a stronger basis in physics. The CRONUS-Earth Project conducted extensive intercomparisons of reference materials to attempt to quantify analytical reproducibility at the community level. We found that stated analytical uncertainties nearly always underestimate the actual degree of variability, as quantified by the over-all coefficient of variation of the intercalibration data. The average amount by which the actual coefficient of variation exceeded the analytical uncertainty was a factor of two (100%), but ranged from 15% to 300% depending on the nuclide and material. Coefficients of variation ranged from 3−4% for 10Be to 6–8% for 36Cl, 14C, and 21Ne, to 5–11% for 26Al. Both interlaboratory bias and within-laboratory excess spread of the data played a role in increasing variability above the stated analytical uncertainties. The physical basis for cosmogenic nuclide production was investigated through numerical modeling and the measurement of energy-dependent neutron cross sections for nuclide interactions. We formulated new, physically based, scaling models, denoted LSD and LSDn, by generalizing global numerical simulations of cosmic-ray processes. The CRONUS-Earth Project identified new geological calibration sites, including one at low latitude and high elevation (Huancane, Peru), and replicated nuclide measurement at numerous laboratories. At many sites multiple nuclides were measured, providing much more confidence in the equivalence of surface-exposure ages calculated from differing nuclides. The data were interpreted using an original cosmogenic-nuclide calculator, CRONUScalc, that incorporates the new physically based scaling. The new data and model produced significantly better fits than previous efforts, but do not fully resolve apparent spatial variations in production rates. The CRONUS-Earth and CRONUS-EU Projects have provided a firm foundation for assessing the strengths and weaknesses of cosmogenic-nuclide analytical methods, adjusted the AMS standards for 10Be and consequently revised the half-life, and have provided improved calibration data sets and interpretative tools.

The mid-Pliocene is a valuable time interval for understanding the mechanisms that determine equilibrium climate at current CO2 concentrations. One intriguing, but not fully understood, feature of the early to mid-Pliocene climate is the amplified arctic temperature response. Current models underestimate the degree of warming in the Pliocene Arctic and validation of proposed feedbacks is limited by scarce terrestrial records of climate and environment, as well as discrepancies in current CO2 proxy reconstructions. Here we reconstruct the CO2 and summer temperature from a re-dated 3.9 +1.5/−0.5 Ma sub-fossil fen-peat deposit on west-central Ellesmere Island, Canada, and investigate fire as a potential feedback to Arctic amplification of warming during the mid-Pliocene. Average CO2 was determined using isotope ratios of mosses to be 440 ± 50 ppm. The estimate for average mean summer temperature is 15.4 ± 0.8 °C using specific bacterial membrane lipids, i.e. branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers. Macro-charcoal was present in all samples from this Pliocene section with notably higher charcoal concentration in the upper part of the sequence. This change in charcoal was synchronous with a change in vegetation that saw fire promoting taxa increase in abundance. Paleovegetation reconstructions are consistent with warm summer temperatures, relatively low summer precipitation and an incidence of fire comparable to fire adapted boreal forests of North America, or potentially central Siberia. To our knowledge, this study represents the furthest northern evidence of fire during the Pliocene and highlights the important role of forest fire in the ecology and climatic processes of the Pliocene High Arctic. The results provide evidence that terrestrial fossil localities in the Pliocene High Arctic were probably formed during warm intervals that coincided with relatively high CO2 concentrations that supported productive biotic communities. This study indicates that interactions between paleovegetation and paleoclimate were mediated by fire in the High Arctic during the Pliocene, even though CO2 concentrations were only ~ 30 ppm higher than modern.

Oblique convergence at the Himalayan margin is hypothesized to be partitioned by orogen-normal thrusting and orogen-parallel strike-slip faulting. We conducted field mapping and remote sensing in the Dhaulagiri Range of Nepal, and the results reveal an active regional fault system termed the Western Nepal Fault System (WNFS). Right and normally offset Quaternary deposits and brittly deformed bedrock demarcate dextral slip along two strike-slip faults striking N40–50°W linked via an extensional right step over striking N10–20°E. The strike-slip attitudes subparallel bedrock foliation, while the step over cuts at a high angle (~70°). Fault slip data along the strike-slip segments trend N70°W with minor dip component, top to north. Fault slip data and observed kinematics along the WNFS support our interpretation that the WNFS formed via arc-parallel stress. On the basis of geometry, kinematics, and structural position we correlate the WNFS to active faults between the Karakoram and Bari Gad faults. This suggests an ~350 km long dextral fault system extending obliquely across the Western Nepal Himalaya which appears to intersect the Main Frontal Thrust (MFT) near 83°30′E, coinciding with a large gradient in the arc-parallel component of GPS velocities. We interpret the WNFS to represent a class of orogen-parallel strike-slip faults working with subduction to accommodate obliquely convergent plate motion. Our observations support the hypothesis that the region lying between the MFT and the WNFS is a continental version of a fore-arc sliver bounded at its base by the Main Himalayan Thrust.

As the kinematics of active faults that bound the Anatolian plate are well studied, it is now essential to improve our understanding of the style and rates of intraplate deformation to constrain regional strain partitioning and improve seismic risk assessments. One of these internal structures, the Central Anatolian fault zone (CAFZ), was originally defined as a regionally significant left-lateral “tectonic escape” structure, stretching for 700 km in a NE direction across the Anatolian plate. We provide new structural, geomorphic, and geochronologic data for several key segments within the central part of the CAFZ that suggest that the sinistral motion has been overstated. The Ecemis fault, the southernmost part of the CAFZ, has a late-Quaternary minimum slip rate of 1.1 ± 0.4 mm a−1, slower than originally proposed. Farther north, the Erciyes fault has fed a linear array of monogenetic vents of the Erciyes stratovolcano and 40Ar/39Ar dating shows a syneruptive stress field of ESE-WNW extension from 580 ± 130 ka to 210 ± 180 ka. In the Erciyes basin, and central part of the CAFZ, we mapped and recharacterized the Erkilet and Gesi faults as predominantly extensional. These long-term geological rates support recent GPS observations that reveal ESE-WNW extension, which we propose as the driver of faulting since 2.73 ± 0.08 Ma. The slip rates and kinematics derived in this study are not typical of an “escape tectonic” structure. The CAFZ is a transtensional fault system that reactivates paleotectonic structures and accommodates E-W extension associated with the westward movement of Anatolia.

Misinterpretation of rock-avalanche deposits in mountain environments is not uncommon because of the complex interactions between rock avalanches and glaciers. This paper for the first time presents a detailed description of suspicious rock-boulder deposits, which are remnants of a rock avalanche onto a Late Pleistocene glacier. The boulder deposits cover around 1.1 km 2 and are distributed over an area of around 7.5 km 2 and a variety of landforms: three closely nested distinct terminal moraines (0.45 km 2 ) and dislocated terminal moraines (0.34 km 2 ) entirely built up of large boulders, lateral moraines that decrease in elevation over a short distance and connect to the terminal moraines, small patches (0.02 km 2 ) of boulders that occur in islands on a peat-dominated valley floor, and large patches of boulder fields (0.25 km 2 in size) hanging 350 m above the valley floor. The latter are disconnected from any potential source area. 10 Be cosmogenic nuclide ages of the three terminal moraines give an indistinguishable Late Pleistocene age of 13.6 ± 1.4 ka, whereas the largest boulder field that is located on the opposite side of the valley from the failed mountain yields a 10 Be age of 14.1 ± 0.4 ka, which is slightly older but indistinguishable from the moraine deposits within uncertainty margins. All boulder deposits add up to a volume of 31 × 10 6 m 3 . The interpretation of a single rock-avalanche source for those landforms is further confirmed by numerical runout modeling using DAN3D. A failure of the entire volume from Skarfjellet Mountain would result in a runout pattern that is identical to that of the distributed boulder fields when considering that the valley was filled with a glacier around 350 m thick. The rock avalanche would not reach the position of the terminal moraines; however, a glacial re-advance could have transported the boulders to that position. The Late Pleistocene rock avalanche was followed by a Holocene rock avalanche with a volume of 23 × 10 6 m 3 and a typical lobate deposit damming the Innerdalen Valley and creating a lake. 10 Be ages indicate that this event occurred 7.97 ± 0.94 ka ago. Structural measurements performed on high-resolution LiDAR scans show a strongly jointed source rock with three joint sets with dip/dip direction 81/034, 86/331, and 77/354 and a foliation with 22/003. The kinematic of the failures can thus be a combination of small-scale wedge failures and planar sliding on shallow dipping foliation. Our detailed description can enable a better identification and interpretation of similar deposits in other mountain areas.

Active crustal shortening and surface uplift are vividly expressed in the foothills of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. Quaternary alluvial-fan and terrace deposits are folded and uplifted tens to hundreds of meters above the local base level, recording deformation and incision of the landscape. We used geomorphic observations and structural analysis from a 300 km 2 three-dimensional seismic-reflection survey over an actively growing anticline to investigate the relationship between finite shortening and surface uplift, and its effects on landscape evolution. A quantitative description of finite shortening of the pregrowth strata from excess-area and line-length calculations were compared with uplift and shortening estimates obtained from geomorphic strain markers dated using in situ 10 Be cosmogenic nuclide depth profiles. This combined approach provides the first estimates of Quaternary surface uplift and horizontal shortening rates along the foothills of the northeastern Colombian Andes. Finite shortening for the Tame anticline was calculated using two different approaches. Excess-area shortening varies from 530 ± 36 m (2σ) at its southern end, decreasing northward to 404 ± 72 m (2σ), whereas line-length shortening is typically an order of magnitude smaller. Using the maximum horizontal shortening, our results for the Tame anticline reveal a Quaternary uplift rate of 2.8 ± 1.5 mm/yr, and a shortening rate of 2.1 ± 1.2 mm/yr (2σ), with the older terraces located at the highest elevations and recording the highest rotation from the horizontal, indicating growth by limb rotation. Based on these rates, the initiation of folding is estimated to be 0.25 +0.09/–0.05 Ma (2σ). We hypothesize that the discrepancy between shortening estimates from line-length and excess-area calculations can be reconciled by accounting for internal deformation, likely developed during the initial stages of folding, which can be represented by strain hardening, for example. The shortening rates we obtain are comparable to geodetically derived shortening rates but are slightly lower than long-term geologic shortening rates. Slower shortening rates and the presence of a youthful structure at the thrust front suggest that the orogen has been migrating eastward since the late Pleistocene, probably due to reorganization of a supercritical thrust wedge farther west in the hinterland, to attain critical taper.

Well-dated bedrock surfaces associated with the highstand and subsequent catastrophic draining of Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, Utah, during the Bonneville flood are excellent locations for in situ cosmogenic nuclide production rate calibration. The CRONUS-Earth project sampled wave-polished bedrock and boulders on an extensive wave-cut bench formed during the Bonneville-level highstand that was abandoned almost instantaneously during the Bonneville flood. CRONUS-Earth also sampled the Tabernacle Hill basalt flow that erupted into Lake Bonneville soon after its stabilization at the Provo level, following the flood. New radiocarbon dating results from tufa at the margins of Tabernacle Hill as part of this study have solidified key aspects of the exposure history at both sites. Both sites have well-constrained exposure histories in which factors such as potential prior exposure, erosion, and shielding are either demonstrably negligible or quantifiable. Multi-nuclide analyses from multiple labs serve as an ad hoc inter-laboratory comparison that supplements and expands on the formalized CRONUS-Earth and CRONUS-EU inter-laboratory comparisons (Blard et al., 2015; Jull et al., 2015; Vermeesch et al., 2015). Results from 10Be, 26Al, and 14C all exhibit scatter comparable to that observed in the CRONUS-Earth effort. Although a 36Cl inter-laboratory comparison was not completed for Jull et al. (2015), 36Cl from plagioclase mineral separates exhibits comparable reproducibility. Site production rates derived from these measurements provide valuable input to the global production rate calibration described by Borchers et al. (2015). Whole-rock 36Cl concentrations, however, exhibit inter-laboratory variation exceeding analytical uncertainty and outside the ranges observed for the other nuclides (Jull et al., 2015). A rigorous inter-laboratory comparison studying the systematics of whole-rock 36Cl extraction techniques is currently underway with the goals of delineating the source(s) of this discrepancy and standardizing these procedures going forward.

Oversteepened valley walls in western Norway have high recurrences of Holocene rock-slope failure activity causing significant risk to communities and infrastructure. Deposits from six to nine catastrophic rock-slope failure (CRSF) events are preserved at the base of the Mannen rock-slope instability in the Romsdal Valley, western Norway. The timing of these CRSF events was determined by terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide dating and relative chronology due to mapping Quaternary deposits. The stratigraphical chronology indicates that three of the CRSF events occurred between 12 and 10 ka, during regional deglaciation. Congruent with previous investigations, these events are attributed to the debuttressing effect experienced by steep slopes following deglaciation, during a period of paraglacial relaxation. The remaining three to six CRSF events cluster at 4.9 ± 0.6 ka (based on 10 cosmogenic 10Be samples from boulders). CRSF events during this later period are ascribed to climatic changes at the end of the Holocene thermal optimum, including increased precipitation rates, high air temperatures and the associated degradation of permafrost in rock-slope faces. Geomorphological mapping and sedimentological analyses further permit the contextualisation of these deposits within the overall sequence of post-glacial fjord-valley infilling. In the light of contemporary climate change, the relationship between CRSF frequency, precipitation, air temperature and permafrost degradation may be of interest to others working or operating in comparable settings. © 2018. This paper presents the results of a combined study, using cosmogenic 36Cl exposure dating and terrestrial digital photogrammetry of the Palliser Rockslide located in the southeastern Canadian Rocky Mountains. This site is particularly well-suited to demonstrate how this multi-disciplinary approach can be used to differentiate distinct rocksliding events, estimate their volume, and establish their chronology and recurrence interval. Observations suggest that rocksliding has been ongoing since the late Pleistocene deglaciation. Two major rockslide events have been dated at 10.0 ± 1.2 kyr and 7.7 ± 0.8 kyr before present, with failure volumes of 40 and 8 Mm3, respectively. The results have important implications concerning our understanding of the temporal distribution of paraglacial rockslides and rock avalanches; they provide a better understanding of the volumes and failure mechanisms of recurrent failure events; and they represent the first absolute ages of a prehistoric high-magnitude event in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Radiocarbon dating of fossil flora and fauna collected along receding cold-based ice caps and cold-based sections of polythermal glaciers on Cumberland Peninsula reveal insights into Neoglacial ice expansion and late Holocene ice dynamics. The taphonomic advantages of subfossilized moss were exploited to precisely document regional expansions of ice caps through the late Holocene. When compared with climate proxies and records of volcanic eruptions, the moss radiocarbon age distributions indicate i) onset of Neoglaciation shortly after 5 ka, concomitant with increased sea ice cover, ii) intensification of ice expansion between 1.9 and 1.1 ka, followed by halt of ice growth, or ice recession during the Medieval Warm Period, and iii) renewed ice expansion after 0.8 ka, in response to cooling related to a combination of large volcanic eruptions and low solar activity. Overall, the observations support a model of near-instantaneous glacial response to regional climate controls and that these responses were synchronous throughout eastern Canadian Arctic and possibly eastern Greenland.

Cross-bedding, the inclined internal stratification that records the migration of certain transverse sedimentary bedforms, is nearly ubiquitous in current-transported bedload sediments. Although examples of the structure are known from inorganic clastic sediments and sedimentary rocks from practically all depositional environments and intervals of geologic history, here we report cross-bedded lenses that are composed wholly or significantly of woody debris, in Pliocene alluvium of the Beaufort Formation in the Canadian High Arctic. The uniqueness of cross-bedded woody debris has hitherto been overlooked, but we demonstrate that, in the entire Phanerozoic record, it is apparently restricted to alluvium deposited during a warm climatic interval that permitted the growth of boreal-type forests within 10° latitude of the North Pole. The marked spatiotemporal restriction of cross-bedded woody debris implies that there may be environmental factors, unique to polar forests, which promote the subaqueous transport of large amounts of fine woody debris as fluvial bedload. We propose a non-uniformitarian conceptual model for the formation of cross-bedded woody debris in forested polar rivers whereby an exceptional abundance of woody debris could accumulate, and become saturated and denser than water, due to reduced decomposition on forest floors that were subject to prolonged periods of darkness and subzero temperatures.

Average geologic slip rates along the central Garlock fault, in eastern California, are thought to have been relatively steady at 5–7 mm/yr since at least the Late Pleistocene, yet present-day rates inferred from geodetic velocity fields are indistinguishable from zero. We evaluate the possibility of non-steady slip over millennial timescales using displaced Late Holocene alluvium along the central Garlock fault in Pilot Knob Valley. Truncation of a Late Holocene alluvial fan deposit against a shutter ridge requires a minimum of 30–37 m of displacement since deposition of the fan; maximum allowable displacement is 43–50 m. The extent of soil development atop the fan surface and optically stimulated luminescence ages bracket fan deposition between 3.5 and 4.5 ka. Together, these data require that slip rates during the Late Holocene were ∼7–14 mm/yr, with a preferred rate of ∼11–13 mm/yr. Our results, in conjunction with previous estimates of displacement over the past ∼15 ka, require significant temporal variations in strain release along the Garlock fault and confirm previous suggestions that interactions among fault systems in eastern California give rise to alternating periods of fault activity and quiescence.

Great earthquakes in the Himalaya are thought to occur mostly along the range front. Field mapping and radiocarbon dating reveal earthquake rupture on a previously unrecognized fault in the interior of the western Himalaya, which forms part of a key structural component of the mountain range, implying that seismic risk evaluations should be revised.

Lee’s Ferry (Arizona, United States) lies at an important geo-logic transition between the Grand Canyon margin and the Canyon-lands center of the Colorado Plateau. It marks a knickpoint along the Colorado River at the top of the steep Grand Canyon, and it is central to debate about the patterns of erosion and sources of uplift in this famous landscape. New chronostratigraphic data from the suite of fi ll terraces here indicate a strong fl uvial response to climate driv-ers superimposed upon an integrated mid-to-late Pleistocene incision rate of ~350 m/m.y. A regional compilation of well-constrained results over the same timescale reveals that this is intermediate between slower rates downstream in Grand Canyon and even faster rates in the central Colorado Plateau, which taper off again farther upstream near the plateau’s eastern edge. This bull’s-eye pattern of rapid inci-sion in the central Colorado Plateau does not match proposed sources of uplift from mantle dynamics at the south and west fl ank of the pla-teau, nor patterns of river steepness and energy. Instead we suggest that this incision pattern is primarily driven by transient response to drainage integration and isostatic feedback from the deep exhuma-tion of weak rocks in the central plateau.INTRODUCTION

The Klondike gravel is a widespread glaciofluvial gravel marking the earliest and most extensive Cordilleran Ice Sheet (CIS) in NW North America. New terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) burial ages indicate this gravel was emplaced 2.64 +0.20 / −0.18 Ma (1 σ ). Coupled with previously interpreted paleomagnetic stratigraphy, this numerical age constrains the timing of the earliest CIS to the late Gauss Chron and provides a minimum age for the Upper White Channel gravel, a significant placer gold source in the Yukon. This implies the first CIS glacial maximum pre-dates the maximum extent of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, indicating that during the initial stages of northern hemisphere glaciation, the most extensive glaciers were present in the relatively cold and high elevation northern Cordillera. Our results verify the CIS as a likely source of persistent coeval ice-rafted debris in the northern Pacific, and suggest that the first CIS formed as a response to the establishment of the northern Pacific halocline and emergence of the 41 ka obliquity cycle during the Plio-Pliocene transition.

The extent to which faults exhibit temporally varying slip rates has important consequences for models of fault mechanics and probabilistic seismic hazard. Here, we explore the temporal behavior of the dextral‐slip Warm Springs Valley fault system, which is part of a network of closely spaced (10–20 km) faults in the northern Walker Lane (California–Nevada border). We develop a late Quaternary slip record for the fault using Quaternary mapping and high‐resolution topographic data from airborne Light Distance and Ranging (LiDAR). The faulted Fort Sage alluvial fan (40.06° N, 119.99° W) is dextrally displaced ![Graphic][1] , and we estimate the age of the alluvial fan to be ![Graphic][2] to 55.7±9.2 ka, based on a terrestrial cosmogenic ![Graphic][3] depth profile and ![Graphic][4] analyses on basalt boulders, respectively. The displacement and age constraints for the fan yield a slip rate of ![Graphic][5] to ![Graphic][6] (2 σ ) along the northern Warm Springs Valley fault system for the past 41.4–55.7 ka. In contrast to this longer‐term slip rate, shorelines associated with the Sehoo highstand of Lake Lahontan (∼15.8 ka) adjacent to the Fort Sage fan are dextrally faulted at most 3 m, which limits a maximum post‐15.8 ka slip rate to 0.2 mm/yr. These relations indicate that the post‐Lahontan slip rate on the fault is only about one‐tenth the longer‐term (41–56 ka) average slip rate. This apparent slip‐rate variation may be related to co‐dependent interaction with the nearby Honey Lake fault system, which shows evidence of an accelerated period of mid‐Holocene earthquakes. Wounded Moose type paleosols developed on remnant deposits of Late Pliocene to Early Pleistocene [pre-Reid] Cordilleran Ice Sheet [CIS] glaciations in central Yukon, Canada. It is an important regional soil-geomorphic marker at the boundary between early CIS advances and the non-glaciated regions of Yukon and Alaska. Yet, at present, its age is poorly constrained between the Reid [0.2 Ma] and earliest [2.84 Ma] CIS advances. Here, we apply depth profiles of in situ-produced cosmogenic 26Al and 10Be to obtain both a minimum exposure age [1.12+0.44/−0.36 Ma, 2σ] and maximum erosion rate [1.1+0.9/−0.5 m Myr−1] for the Wounded Moose paleosol. Our results show that this soil formed under exceptionally stable conditions [max erosion rate similar to polar bedrock erosion rates] and that it pre-dates the emergence of the 100 ka [eccentricity] climate cycle. Contrasting our results from single- and joint-nuclide depth profile models reveals a significant discrepancy between calculated and effective 10Be and 26Al production rates [40–65% of expected values]. We interpret this discrepancy as the result of intermittent loess cover—with a time-averaged depth between 60 and 110 cm—which significantly reduced apparent exposure ages obtained from the single–nuclide model. The observation of such a significant loess-cover effect on cosmogenic nuclide production has implications for exposure dating in glacial and periglacial environments; a multi-nuclide sampling strategy is required to quantify this effect.
