We present multi-wavelength fast timing observations of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 (ASASSN-18ey), taken with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub-Millimeter Array (ALMA), Very Large Telescope (VLT), New Technology Telescope (NTT), Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), and XMM-Newton. Our data set simultaneously samples ten different electromagnetic bands (radio - X-ray) over a 7-hour period during the hard state of the 2018-2019 outburst. The emission we observe is highly variable, displaying multiple rapid flaring episodes. To characterize the variability properties in our data, we implemented a combination of cross-correlation and Fourier analyses. We find that the emission is highly correlated between different bands, measuring time-lags ranging from hundreds of milliseconds between the X-ray/optical bands to minutes between the radio/sub-mm bands. Our Fourier analysis also revealed, for the first time in a black hole X-ray binary, an evolving power spectral shape with electromagnetic frequency. Through modelling these variability properties, we find that MAXI J1820+070 launches a highly relativistic ($\Gamma=6.81^{+1.06}_{-1.15}$) and confined ($\phi=0.45^{+0.13}_{-0.11}$ deg) jet, which is carrying a significant amount of power away from the system (equivalent to $\sim0.6 \, L_{1-100{\rm keV}}$). We additionally place constraints on the jet composition and magnetic field strength in the innermost jet base region. We present high-speed optical photometry from SAAO and SALT on the black hole LMXB MAXI J1820+070 (ASSASN-18ey), some of it simultaneous with NICER, Swift, and Insight-HXMT X-ray coverage. We detect optical quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) that move to higher frequencies as the outburst progresses, tracking both the frequency and evolution of similar X-ray QPOs previously reported. Correlated X-ray/optical data reveal a complex pattern of lags, including an anticorrelation and a sub-second lag that evolve over the first few weeks of outburst. They also show correlated components separated by a lag equal to the QPO period roughly centered on zero lag, implying that the inter-band variability is strongly and consistently affected by these QPOs at a constant phase lag of roughly ±π. The synchronization of X-ray and optical QPOs indicates that they must be produced in regions physically very close to each other; we, thus, propose that they can be explained by a precessing jet model, based on analogies with V404 Cyg and MAXI J1348−630.

We study the stellar kinematic properties and spatial distribution of the association Cyg OB3 using precise astrometric data from Gaia DR2. All known O- and B-type stars in Cyg OB3 region with positions, parallaxes and proper motions available are included, comprising a total of 41 stars. The majority of stars are found to be concentrated at a heliocentric distance of 2.0 +/- 0.3 kpc. The mean peculiar velocity of the sample after removing Galactic rotation and solar motion is ~22 km/s, dominated by the velocity component towards the Galactic center. The relative position and velocity of the black hole X-ray binary Cyg X-1 with respect to the association suggest that Cyg OB3 is most likely its parent association. The peculiar kinematic properties of some of the stars are revealed and are suggestive of past stellar encounters. The sample includes a previously known runaway star HD 227018, and its high peculiar velocity of ~50 km/s is confirmed with Gaia. We estimated the velocities of stars relative to the association and the star HD 225577 exhibits peculiar velocity smaller than its velocity relative to the association. The star has lower value of proper motion than the rest of the sample. We report on a first census of Galactic black hole X-ray binary (BHXRB) properties with the second data release (DR2) of Gaia, focusing on dynamically confirmed and strong candidate BH transients. Gaia DR2 provides five-parameter astrometric solutions including position, parallax and proper motion for 11 out of a sample of 24 systems. Distance estimates are tested with parallax inversion as well as Bayesian inference. We derive an empirically motivated characteristic scalelength of L = 2.17 ± 0.12 kpc for this BHXRB population to infer distances based upon an exponentially decreasing space density prior. Geometric DR2 parallaxes provide new, independent distance estimates, but the faintness of this population in quiescence results in relatively large fractional distance uncertainties. Despite this, DR2 estimates generally agree with the distances found in the literature. The most discrepant case is BW Cir, for which detailed studies of the donor star have suggested a distant location at ≳25 kpc. The large parallax and relatively high proper motion measured by DR2 instead indicate significantly smaller distances, suggesting that the source might be amongst the nearest of XRBs. However, both larger and smaller distances create problems for the interpretation of the source, and follow-up data are required to resolve its true nature. DR2 also provides a first distance estimate to one source, MAXI J1820+070, and novel proper motion estimates for seven sources. Peculiar velocities relative to Galactic rotation exceed ≈ 50 km s-1 for the bulk of the sample, with a median system kinetic energy of peculiar motion of ˜ 5 × 1047 erg. BW Cir could be a new high-velocity BHXRB if its astrometry is confirmed. A putative anticorrelation between peculiar velocity and BH mass is found, as expected in mass-dependent BH kick formation channels, but this trend remains weak in the DR2 data.

We report on a multi-epoch campaign of rapid optical/X-ray timing observations of the superbright 2018 outburst of MAXI J1820+070, a black hole low-mass X-ray binary system. The observations spanned 80 days in the initial hard-state, and were taken with NTT/ULTRACAM and GTC/HiPERCAM in the optical (ugriz filters at time resolutions of 8--300 Hz) and with ISS/NICER in X-rays. We find (i) a growing anti-correlation between the optical and X-ray lightcurves, (ii) a steady, positive correlation at an optical lag of 0.2 s (with a longer lag at longer wavelengths) present in all epochs, and (iii) a curious positive correlation at \textit{negative} optical lags in the last, X-ray softest epoch, with longer wavelengths showing a greater correlation and a more negative lag. To explain these we postulate the possible existence of two synchrotron-emitting components; a compact jet and a hot flow. In our model, the significance of the jet decreases over the outburst, while the hot flow remains static (thus, relatively, increasing in significance). We also discuss a previously discovered quasi-periodic oscillation and note how it creates coherent optical time lags, stronger at longer wavelengths, during at least two epochs., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures. The black-hole X-ray transient MAXI J1820+07 (=ASSASN-18ey) discovered in March 2018 was one of the optically brightest ever seen, which has resulted in very detailed optical outburst light-curves being obtained. We combine them here with X-ray and radio light-curves to show the major geometric changes the source undergoes. We present a detailed temporal analysis that reveals the presence of remarkably high amplitude (>0.5 mag) modulations, which evolve from the superhump (16.87 h) period towards the presumed orbital (16.45 h) period. These modulations appear ~87d after the outburst began, and follow the Swift/BAT hard X-ray light-curve, which peaks 4 days before the radio flare and jet ejection, when the source undergoes a rapid hard to soft state transition. The optical modulation then moves closer to the orbital period, with a light curve peak that drifts slowly in orbital phase from ~0.8 to ~0.3 during the soft state. We propose that the unprecedentedly large amplitude modulation requires a warp in the disc in order to provide a large enough radiating area, and for the warp to be irradiation-driven. Its sudden turn-on implies a change in the inner disc geometry that raises the hard X-ray emitting component to a height where it can illuminate the warped outer disc regions., Accepted to MNRAS

Time-resolved SALT spectra of the short-period, dipping X-ray transient, Swift J1357.2-0933, during its 2017 outburst has revealed broad Balmer and HeII4686 absorption features, blue-shifted by ~600 km/s. Remarkably these features are also variable on the ~500s dipping period, indicating their likely association with structure in the inner accretion disc. We interpret this as arising in a dense, hot (>~30,000K) outflowing wind seen at very high inclination, and draw comparisons with other accretion disc corona sources. We argue against previous distance estimates of 1.5 kpc and favour a value >~6 kpc, implying an X-ray luminosity L_X>~4x10^{36} erg/s$. Hence it is not a very faint X-ray transient. Our preliminary 1D Monte-Carlo radiative transfer and photoionization calculations support this interpretation, as they imply a high intrinsic L_X, a column density N_H>~10^{24} cm^{-2} and a low covering factor for the wind. Our study shows that Swift J1357.2-0933 is truly remarkable amongst the cohort of luminous, galactic X-ray binaries, showing the first example of He II absorption, the first (and only) variable dip period and is possibly the first black hole 'accretion disc corona' candidate., MNRAS Letters in press. We report on observations of black hole Swift J1357.2-0933, a member of the modest population of very faint X-ray transients. This source has previously shown intense dips in the optical lightcurve, a phenomena that has been linked to the existence of a "unique toroidal structure" in the inner region of the disc, seen at a high inclination. Our observations, carried out by the Neil Gehrels Swift and NuSTAR X-ray observatories, do not show the presence of intense dips in the optical light curves. We find that the X-ray light curves do not show any features that would straightforwardly support an edge-on configuration or high inclination configuration of the orbit. This is similar to what was seen in the X-ray observations of the source during its 2011 outburst. Moreover, the broadband spectra were well described with an absorbed power-law model without any signatures of the cut-off at energies above 10 keV, or any reflection from the disc or the putative torus. Thus, the X-ray data do not support the unique obscuring torus scenario proposed for J1357. We also performed a multi-wavelength study using the data of X-ray telescope and Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope aboard Swift, taken during the 4.5 months duration of the 2017 outburst. This is consistent with what was previously inferred for this source. We found a correlation between the simultaneous X-ray and ultraviolet/optical data and our study suggests that most of the reprocessed flux must be coming out in the ultraviolet., 13 pages, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on simultaneous sub-second optical and X-ray timing observations of the low mass X-ray binary black hole candidate MAXI J1820+070. The bright 2018 outburst rise allowed simultaneous photometry in five optical bands ($ugriz_s$) with HiPERCAM/GTC (Optical) at frame rates over 100 Hz, together with NICER/ISS observations (X-rays). Intense (factor of two) red flaring activity in the optical is seen over a broad range of timescales down to $\sim$10 ms. Cross-correlating the bands reveals a prominent anti-correlation on timescales of $\sim$seconds, and a narrow sub-second correlation at a lag of $\approx$+165 ms (optical lagging X-rays). This lag increases with optical wavelength, and is approximately constant over Fourier frequencies of $\sim$0.3-10 Hz. These features are consistent with an origin in the inner accretion flow and jet base within $\sim$5000 Gravitational radii. An additional $\sim$+5 s lag feature may be ascribable to disc reprocessing. MAXI J1820+070 is the third black hole transient to display a clear $\sim$0.1s optical lag, which may be common feature in such objects. We present rapid, multiwavelength photometry of the low-mass X-ray binary Swift J1357.2-0933 during its 2017 outburst. Using several sets of quasi-simultaneous ULTRACAM/NTT (optical), NuSTAR (X-ray), XRT/Swift (X-ray), SALT (optical) and ATCA (radio) observations taken during outburst decline, we confirm the frequent optical dipping that has previously been noted both in outburst and in quiescence. We also find: 1) that the dip frequency decreases as the outburst decays, similar to what was seen in the previous outburst, 2) that the dips produce a shape similar to that in binary systems with partial disc occultations, 3) that the source becomes significantly bluer during these dips, indicating an unusual geometry compared to other LMXB dippers, and 4) that dip superposition analysis confirms the lack of an X-ray response to the optical dips. These very unusual properties appear to be unique to Swift J1357.2-0933, and are likely the result of a high binary inclination, as inferred from features such as its very low outburst X-ray luminosity. From this analysis as well as X-ray/optical timing correlations, we suggest a model with multi-component emission/absorption features with differing colours. This could include the possible presence of a sporadically occulted jet base and a recessed disc.
