Let $D$ be a Jordan domain of unit capacity. We study the partition function of a planar Coulomb gas in $D$ with a hard wall along $\eta = \partial D$, \[Z_{n}(D) =\frac 1{n!}\int_{D^n}\prod_{1\le k < \ell \le n}|z_k-z_\ell|^{2} \prod_{k=1}^n d^2z_k.\] We are interested in how the geometry of $\eta$ is reflected in the large $n$ behavior of $Z_n(D)$. We prove that $\eta$ is a Weil-Petersson quasicircle if and only if \[ \log Z_n(D)= \log Z_n(\mathbb{D}) -I^L(\eta)/12 + o(1), \quad n\to \infty, \] where $I^L(\eta)$ is the Loewner energy of $\eta$, $\mathbb{D}$ is the unit disc, and $\log Z_n(\mathbb{D}) = \log n!/\pi^n$. We next consider piecewise analytic $\eta$ with $m$ corners of interior opening angles $\pi \alpha_p, p=1,\ldots, m$. Our main result is the asymptotic formula \[ \log Z_n(D)= \log Z_n(\mathbb{D}) - \frac 16\sum_{p=1}^m \left(\alpha_p+\frac 1{\alpha_p}-2 \right) \log n + o(\log n), \quad n\to \infty, \] which is consistent with physics predictions. The starting point of our analysis is an exact expression for $\log Z_{n}(D)$ in terms of a Fredholm determinant involving the truncated Grunsky operator for $D$. The proof of the main result is based on careful asymptotic analysis of the Grunsky coefficients. As further applications of our method we also study the Loewner energy and the related Fekete-Pommerenke energy, a quantity appearing in the analysis of Fekete points, for equipotentials approximating the boundary of a domain with corners. We prove an asymptotic formula for the partition function of a 2d Coulomb gas at inverse temperature $\beta>0$ confined to lie on a Jordan curve. This also gives a central limit theorem for a linear statistic of the particles in the gas. We obtain different expressions for the asymptotic mean and variance which involve either the exterior conformal mapping of the curve or the Grunsky operator., Comment: 29 pages

We show there is a last path at the rough smooth boundary of the two-periodic Aztec diamond with parameter $a\in (0,1)$ that, suitably rescaled, converges to the Airy process, under the condition that $a$ tends to zero as the size of the Aztec diamond tends to infinity at a certain rate. This condition causes the rough region to have a thin, mesoscopic width. Three phases of macroscopic domains have been seen for large but finite periodic dimer models; these are known as the frozen, rough and smooth phases. The transition region between the frozen and rough region has received a lot of attention for the last twenty years and recently work has been underway to understand the rough-smooth transition region in the case of the two-periodic Aztec diamond. We compute uniform asymptotics for dimer-dimer correlations of the two-periodic Aztec diamond when the dimers lie in the rough-smooth transition region. We consider certain determinants with respect to a sufficiently regular Jordan curve $\gamma$ in the complex plane that generalize Toeplitz determinants which are obtained when the curve is the circle. This also corresponds to studying a planar Coulomb gas on the curve at inverse temperature $\beta=2$. Under suitable assumptions on the curve we prove a strong Szeg\H{o} type asymptotic formula as the size of the determinant grows. The resulting formula involves the Grunsky operator built from the Grunsky coefficients of the exterior mapping function for $\gamma$. As a consequence of our formula we obtain the asymptotics of the partition function for the Coulomb gas on the curve. This formula involves the Fredholm determinant of the absolute value squared of the Grunsky operator which equals, up to a multiplicative constant, the Loewner energy of the curve. The six-vertex model is an important toy-model in statistical mechanics for two-dimensional ice with a natural parameter $\Delta$. When $\Delta = 0$, the so-called free-fermion point, the model is in natural correspondence with domino tilings of the Aztec diamond. Although this model is integrable for all $\Delta$, there has been very little progress in understanding its statistics in the scaling limit for other values. In this work, we focus on the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions at $\Delta = 1/2$, where it corresponds to alternating sign matrices (ASMs). We consider the level lines in a height function representation of ASMs. We show that the maximum of the topmost level line for a uniformly random ASMs has the GOE Tracy--Widom distribution after appropriate rescaling. A key ingredient in our proof is Zeilberger's proof of the ASM conjecture. As far as we know, this is the first edge fluctuation result away from the tangency points for the domain-wall six-vertex model when we are not in the free fermion case., Comment: 45 pages, 9 figures; Revised Version

We show that the distance in total variation between $(\mathrm{Tr}\ U, \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\mathrm{Tr}\ U^2, \cdots, \frac{1}{\sqrt{m}}\mathrm{Tr}\ U^m)$ and a real Gaussian vector, where $U$ is a Haar distributed orthogonal or symplectic matrix of size $2n$ or $2n+1$, is bounded by $\Gamma(2\frac{n}{m}+1)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ times a correction. The correction term is explicit and holds for all $n\geq m^4$, for $m$ sufficiently large. For $n\geq m^3$ we obtain the bound $(\frac{n}{m})^{-c\sqrt{\frac{n}{m}}}$ with an explicit constant $c$. This article studies the inhomogeneous geometric polynuclear growth model, the distribution of which is related to Schur functions. We explain a method to derive its distribution functions in both space-like and time-like directions, focusing on the two-time distribution. Asymptotics of the two-time distribution in the KPZ-scaling limit is then considered, extending to two times several single-time distributions in the KPZ universality class., Comment: Final version. Random tilings of the two-periodic Aztec diamond contain three macroscopic regions: frozen, where the tilings are deterministic; rough, where the correlations between dominoes decay polynomially; smooth, where the correlations between dominoes decay exponentially. In a previous paper, the authors found that a certain averaging of height function differences at the rough-smooth interface converged to the extended Airy kernel point process. In this paper, we augment the local geometrical picture at this interface by introducing well-defined lattice paths which are closely related to the level lines of the height function. We show, after suitable centering and rescaling, that a point process from these paths converges to the extended Airy kernel point process provided that the natural parameter associated to the two-periodic Aztec diamond is small enough., Comment: 52 pages, 7 figures; Revised version

In this article, we obtain a super-exponential rate of convergence in total variation between the traces of the first $m$ powers of an $n\times n$ random unitary matrices and a $2m$-dimensional Gaussian random variable. This generalizes previous results in the scalar case to the multivariate setting, and we also give the precise dependence on the dimensions $m$ and $n$ in the estimate with explicit constants. We are especially interested in the regime where $m$ grows with $n$ and our main result basically states that if $m\ll \sqrt{n}$, then the rate of convergence in the Gaussian approximation is $\Gamma(\frac nm+1)^{-1}$ times a correction. We also show that the Gaussian approximation remains valid for all $m\ll n^{2/3}$ without a fast rate of convergence.

Random tilings of geometrical shapes with dominos or lozenges have been a rich source of universal statistical distributions. This paper deals with domino tilings of checker board rectangular shapes such that the top two and bottom two adjacent squares have the same orientation and the two most left and two most right ones as well. It forces these so-called "skew-Aztec rectangles" to have cuts on either side. For large sizes of the domain and upon an appropriate scaling of the location of the cuts, one finds split tacnodes between liquid regions with two distinct adjacent frozen phases descending into the tacnode. Zooming about such split tacnodes, filaments appear between the liquid patches evolving in a bricklike sea of dimers of another type. This work shows that the random fluctuations in a neighborhood of the split tacnode are governed asymptotically by the discrete tacnode kernel, providing strong evidence that this kernel is a universal discrete-continuous limiting kernel occurring naturally whenever we have double interlacing patterns. We study the multi-time distribution in a discrete polynuclear growth model or, equivalently, in directed last-passage percolation with geometric weights. A formula for the joint multi-time distribution function is derived in the discrete setting. It takes the form of a multiple contour integral of a block Fredholm determinant. The asymptotic multi-time distribution is then computed by taking the appropriate KPZ-scaling limit of this formula. The two-time distribution gives the limiting joint distribution of the heights at two different times of a local 1D random growth model in the curved geometry. This distribution has been computed in a specific model but is expected to be universal in the KPZ universality class. Its marginals are the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. In random tiling and dimer models we can get various limit shapes which gives the boundaries between different types of phases. The shape fluctuations at these boundaries give rise to universal limit laws, in particular the Airy process. We survey some models which can be analyzed in detail based on the fact that they are determinantal point processes with correlation kernels that can be computed. This paper studies random lozenge tilings of general non-convex polygonal regions. We show that the pairwise interaction of the non-convexities leads asymptotically to new kernels and thus to new statistics for the tiling fluctuations. The precise geometrical figure here consists of a hexagon with cuts along opposite edges. For this model we take limits when the size of the hexagon and the cuts tend to infinity, while keeping certain geometric data fixed in order to guarantee interaction beyond the limit. We show in this paper that the kernel for the finite tiling model can be expressed as a multiple integral, where the number of integrations is related to the fixed geometric data above. Domino tilings of the two-periodic Aztec diamond feature all of the three possible types of phases of random tiling models. These phases are determined by the decay of correlations between dominoes and are generally known as solid, liquid and gas. The liquid-solid boundary is easy to define microscopically and is known in many models to be described by the Airy process in the limit of a large random tiling. The liquid-gas boundary has no obvious microscopic description. Using the height function we define a random measure in the two-periodic Aztec diamond designed to detect the long range correlations visible at the liquid-gas boundary. We prove that this random measure converges to the extended Airy point process. This indicates that, in a sense, the liquid-gas boundary should also be described by the Airy process., Comment: Revised version

At a typical cusp point of the disordered region in a random tiling model we expect to see a determinantal process called the Pearcey process in the appropriate scaling limit. However, in certain situations another limiting point process appears that we call the Cusp-Airy process, which is a kind of two sided extension of the Airy kernel point process. We will study this problem in a class of random lozenge tiling models coming from interlacing particle systems. We study mesoscopic linear statistics for a class of determinantal point processes which interpolates between Poisson and Gaussian Unitary Ensemble statistics. These processes are obtained by modifying the spectrum of the correlation kernel of the GUE eigenvalue process. An example of such a system comes from considering the distribution of non-colliding Brownian motions in a cylindrical geometry, or a grand canonical ensemble of free fermions in a quadratic well at positive temperature. When the scale of the modification of the spectrum of the GUE kernel, related to the size of the cylinder or the temperature, is different from the scale in the mesoscopic linear statistic, we get a central limit theorem of either Poisson or GUE type. On the other hand, in the critical regime where the scales are the same, we get a non-Gaussian process in the limit. Its distribution is characterized by explicit but complicated formulae for the cumulants of smooth linear statistics. These results rely on an asymptotic sine-kernel approximation of the GUE kernel which is valid at all mesoscopic scales, and a generalization of cumulant computations of Soshnikov for the sine process. In the zero temperature Brownian semi-discrete directed polymer we study the joint distribution of two last-passage times at positions ordered in the time-like direction. This is the situation when we have the slow de-correlation phenomenon. We compute the limiting joint distribution function in a scaling limit. This limiting distribution is given by an expansion in determinants which is not a Fredholm expansion. A somewhat similar looking formula was derived non-rigorously in a related model by Dotsenko., Comment: 40 pages. Random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond shape exhibit interesting features and some of the statistical properties seen in random matrix theory. As a statistical mechanical model it can be thought of as a dimer model or as a certain random surface. We consider the Aztec diamond with a two-periodic weighting which exhibits all three possible phases that occur in these types of models, often referred to as solid, liquid and gas. To analyze this model, we use entries of the inverse Kasteleyn matrix which give the probability of any configuration of dominoes. A formula for these entries, for this particular model, was derived by Chhita and Young (2014). In this paper, we find a major simplification of this formula expressing entries of the inverse Kasteleyn matrix by double contour integrals which makes it possible to investigate their asymptotics. In a part of the Aztec diamond, where the asymptotic analysis is simpler, we use this formula to show that the entries of the inverse Kasteleyn matrix converge to the known entries of the full-plane inverse Kasteleyn matrices for the different phases. We also study the detailed asymptotics of the inverse Kasteleyn matrix at both the "liquid-solid" and "liquid-gas" boundaries, and find the extended Airy kernel in the next order asymptotics. Finally we provide a potential candidate for a combinatorial description of the liquid-gas boundary., Comment: Fixed a mistake in the statement of Lemma 4.7. In this paper we study mesoscopic fluctuations for Dyson's Brownian motion with $\beta=2$. Dyson showed that the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) is the invariant measure for this stochastic evolution and conjectured that, when starting from a generic configuration of initial points, the time that is needed for the GUE statistics to become dominant depends on the scale we look at: The microscopic correlations arrive at the equilibrium regime sooner than the macrosopic correlations. In this paper we investigate the transition on the intermediate, i.e. mesoscopic, scales. The time scales that we consider are such that the system is already in microscopic equilibrium (sine-universality for the local correlations), but we have not yet reached equilibrium at the macrosopic scale. We describe the transition to equilibrium on all mesoscopic scales by means of Central Limit Theorems for linear statistics with sufficiently smooth test functions. We consider two situations: deterministic initial points and randomly chosen initial points. In the random situation, we obtain a transition from the classical Central Limit Theorem for independent random variables to the one for the GUE., Comment: 106 pages; 4 figures

We study random domino tilings of a Double Aztec diamond, a region consisting of two overlapping Aztec diamonds. The random tilings give rise to two discrete determinantal point processes called the K-and L-particle processes. The correlation kernel of the K-particles was derived in Adler, Johansson and van Moerbeke (2011), who used it to study the limit process of the K-particles with different weights for horizontal and vertical dominos. Let the size of both, the Double Aztec diamond and the overlap, tend to infinity such that the two arctic ellipses just touch; then they show that the fluctuations of the K-particles near the tangency point tend to the tacnode process. In this paper, we find the limiting point process of the L-particles in the overlap when the weights of the horizontal and vertical dominos are equal, or asymptotically equal, as the Double Aztec diamond grows, while keeping the overlap finite. In this case the two limiting arctic circles are tangent in the overlap and the behavior of the L-particles in the vicinity of the point of tangency can then be viewed as two colliding GUE-minor process, which we call the tacnode GUE minor process. As part of the derivation of the kernel for the L-particles we find the inverse Kasteleyn matrix for the dimer model version of Double Aztec diamond.

We study random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond with different weights for horizontal and vertical dominoes. A domino tiling of an Aztec diamond can also be described by a particle system which is a determinantal process. We give a relation between the correlation kernel for this process and the inverse Kasteleyn matrix of the Aztec diamond. This gives a formula for the inverse Kasteleyn matrix which generalizes a result of Helfgott. As an application, we investigate the asymptotics of the process formed by the southern dominoes close to the frozen boundary. We find that at the northern boundary, the southern domino process converges to a thinned Airy point process. At the southern boundary, the process of holes of the southern domino process converges to a multiple point process that we call the thickened Airy point process. Discrete and continuous non-intersecting random processes have given rise to critical "infinite dimensional diffusions", like the Airy process, the Pearcey process and variations thereof. It has been known that domino tilings of very large Aztec diamonds lead macroscopically to a disordered region within an inscribed ellipse (arctic circle in the homogeneous case), and a regular brick-like region outside the ellipse. The fluctuations near the ellipse, appropriately magnified and away from the boundary of the Aztec diamond, form an Airy process, run with time tangential to the boundary. This paper investigates the domino tiling of two overlapping Aztec diamonds; this situation also leads to non-intersecting random walks and an induced point process; this process is shown to be determinantal. In the large size limit, when the overlap is such that the two arctic ellipses for the single Aztec diamonds merely touch, a new critical process will appear near the point of osculation (tacnode), which is run with a time in the direction of the common tangent to the ellipses: this is the "tacnode process". It is also shown here that this tacnode process is universal: it coincides with the one found in the context of two groups of non-intersecting random walks or also Brownian motions, meeting momentarily., Comment: 80 pages, 18 figures

We consider non-colliding Brownian motions with two starting points and two endpoints. The points are chosen so that the two groups of Brownian motions just touch each other, a situation that is referred to as a tacnode. The extended kernel for the determinantal point process at the tacnode point is computed using new methods and given in a different form from that obtained for a single time in previous work by Delvaux, Kuijlaars and Zhang. The form of the extended kernel is also different from that obtained for the extended tacnode kernel in another model by Adler, Ferrari and van Moerbeke. We study the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of Gaussian divisible Hermitian Wigner matrices. These random matrices are obtained by adding an independent GUE matrix to an Hermitian random matrix with independent elements, a Wigner matrix. We prove that Tracy-Widom universality holds at the edge in this class of random matrices under the optimal moment condition that there is a uniform bound on the fourth moment of the matrix elements. Furthermore, we show that universality holds in the bulk for Gaussian divisible Wigner matrices if we just assume finite second moments., Comment: 31 pages. Revised version. We show that the transition probability of the Markoc chain $(G(j,1),...,G(j,n))_{j\ge 1}$, where the $G(i,j)'s$ are certain directed last-passage times, is given by a determinant of a special form. An analogous formula has recently been obtained by Warren in a Brownian motion model. Furthermore we demonstrate that this formula leads to the Meixner ensemble when we compute the distribution function for $G(m,n)$. We also obtain the Fredholm determinant representation of this distribution, where the kernel has a double contour integral representation., Comment: 14 pages

We study the limiting behavior of $\Tr U^{k(n)}$, where $U$ is a $n\times n$ random unitary matrix and $k(n)$ is a natural number that may vary with $n$ in an arbitrary way. Our analysis is based on the connection with Toeplitz determinants. The central observation of this paper is a strong Szeg\"o limit theorem for Toeplitz determinants associated to symbols depending on $n$ in a particular way. As a consequence to this result, we find that for each fixed $m\in \N$, the random variables $ \Tr U^{k_j(n)}/\sqrt{\min(k_j(n),n)}$, $j=1,..., m$, converge to independent standard complex normals., Comment: 21 pages

The Tracy-Widom distribution that has been much studied in recent years can be thought of as an extreme value distribution. We discuss interpolation between the classical extreme value distribution $\exp(-\exp(-x))$, the Gumbel distribution and the Tracy-Widom distribution. There is a family of determinantal processes whose edge behaviour interpolates between a Poisson process with density $\exp(-x)$ and the Airy kernel point process. This process can be obtained as a scaling limit of a grand canonical version of a random matrix model introduced by Moshe, Neuberger and Shapiro. We also consider the deformed GUE ensemble, $M=M_0+\sqrt{2S} V$, with $M_0$ diagobal with independent elements and $V$ from GUE. Here we do not see a transition from Tracy-Widom to Gumbel, but rather a transition from Tracy-Widom to Gaussian., Comment: 29 pages

Consider $a$ particles performing simple, symmetric, non-intersecting random walks, starting at points $2(j-1)$, $1\le j\le a$ at time 0 and ending at $2(j-1)+c-b$ at time $b+c$. This can also be interpreted as a random rhombus tiling of an $abc$-hexagon, or as a random boxed planar partition confined to a rectangular box with side lengths $a$, $b$ and $c$. The positions of the particles at all times gives a determinantal point process with a correlation kernel given in terms of the associated Hahn polynomials. In a suitable scaling limit we obtain non-intersecting Brownian motions which can be related to Dysons's Hermitian Brownian motion via a suitable transformation., Comment: 13 pages

Consider Dyson's Hermitian Brownian motion model after a finite time S, where the process is started at N equidistant points on the real line. These N points after time S form a determinantal process and has a limit as N tends to infinity. This limting determinantal proceess has the interesting feature that it shows number variance saturation. The variance of the number of particles in an interval converges to a limiting value as the length of the interval goes to infinity. Number variance saturation is also seen for example in the zeros of the Riemann zeta function (Odlyzko, Berry). The process can also be constructed using non-intersecting paths and we consider several variants of this construction. One construction leads to a model which shows a transition from a non-universal behaviour with number variance saturation to a universal sine-kernel behaviour as we go up the line., Comment: 35 pages

We prove that the, appropriately rescaled, boundary of the north polar region in the Aztec diamond converges to the Airy process. The proof uses certain determinantal point processes given by the extended Krawtchouk kernel. We summarize some of the recent developments which link certain problems in combinatorial theory related to random growth to random matrix theory.

We consider a discrete polynuclear growth (PNG) process and prove a functioal limit theorem for its convergrence to the Airy process. This generalizes previous results by Pr"ahofer and Spohn. The result enables us to express the GOE largest eigenvalue (Tracy-Widom) distribution in terms of the Airy process. We investigate certain measures induced by families of non-intersecting paths in domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, rhombus tilings of an abc-hexagon, a dimer model on a cylindrical brick lattice and a growth model. The measures obtained, e.g. the Krawtchouk and Hahn ensembles, have the same structure as the eigenvalue measures in random matrix theory like GUE, which can in fact be obtained from non-intersecting Brownian motions.
