1. Didactic and Curriculum in ECEC from a Froebelian Standpoint

Abstract

How can we use Friedrich Froebel's play theory in order to analyze ECEC, Early Childhood Education and Care? Wolfgang Klafki builds his theory of categorical "Bildung" on Froebel's play theory, which presupposes the interaction between child, adult and content, as in the didactic triangle. Froebel's play theory was lost in the hands of his followers Bertha von Marenholtz-Bülow and Henriette Schrader-Breymann. Developmental theories such as the cultural level theory and the recapitulation theory had a strong influence. One result was a child-centered laissez-faire pedagogy, waiting for the child to mature enough to be able to start school. With Klafki and his perspective on Froebel, it is possible to ask a set of questions in order to describe and analyze contemporary ECEC programs: (i) What are the didactic relations between child, adult and content, as in the didactic triangle? (ii) What is the content and how is it selected and organized? (iii) What kind of play and learning is intended?

Abstract

This article is based on a collaborative study in Iceland, Sweden and Norway of the youngest children in institutional settings, such as preschools. At the present time, preschool curricula and frameworks are changing to include increased learning. However, preschool teacher education lacks sufficient focus on this age group. New preschool organisations depend both on the increased number of very young children in the system and on new versions of pedagogical approaches. This study is based on the voices of preschool staff who work with very young children. The results showed the dilemmas and challenges that these teachers experience in their everyday work.

Abstract

International audience; The optimal conditioning for patients with acute myeloid leukemia in first complete remission treated with allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) has not been defined so far. In this retrospective study, we compared two "reduced-toxicity" regimens: intravenous busulfan at a total dose of 9.6 mg/kg (3 days) + fludarabine (Bu3/Flu) and total body irradiation at a dose of 8 Gy + fludarabine (TBI8Gy/Flu). In the entire study cohort (n = 518), the probabilities of overall survival (OS), leukemia-free survival (LFS), relapse and non-relapse mortality (NRM) at 2 years for Bu3/Flu and TBI8Gy/Flu were 62% vs. 72.5% (p = 0.051), 59.5% vs. 65% (p = 0.15), 30% vs. 20% (p = 0.01), and 10% vs. 14% (p = 0.18), respectively. Abstract

Workshop 2 on age reading of North Sea plaice (Pleuronectes platessa), (WKARP2) was the first age reading workshop focusing specifically on age reading of the North Sea plaice stock (ple.27.420) in the North Sea and Skagerrak. The objectives of the workshop were: to evaluate the level of agreement between age readers for the stock by reviewing results of the 2020 North Sea Skagerrak plaice exchange in consideration of previous calibration and validation work; to standardize laboratory procedures and age reading methods applied; to provide guidelines for reliable age interpretation; to provide age error data to the stock assessment working group; to create an agreed age reference collection of otoliths. Two age reading exercises, one exchange before the workshop (SmartDots ID 281), and one workshop exercise (ID 402) were completed using SmartDots1. Age readers’ annotations of growth structures and ageing results from both exercises were examined using standardized quality analyses based on an R script , presented in this report. Age reading error data has been provided to the ICES WGNSSK2 (Working Group on the Assessment of Demersal Stocks in the North Sea and Skagerrak) which can be tested in the ple.27.420 stock assessment model. Disagreement between readers is mostly attributable to differences in the identification of the first winter ring as this can vary in width across samples collected from different areas. Results showed that estimated ages in older fish can be unreliable due to a narrowing of the annuli close to the otolith edge. Further work is required to provide guidelines for age readers about which structures should be identified as annuli. Different preparation methods are applied in national laboratories. The group concluded that reading whole and sectioned otoliths viewed under reflected light is optimal; no obvious benefit was identified from sectioning plaice otoliths from fish under the age of 6. Using images of otoliths, the reliability of the age reading results is depending on image quality. To help standardize image format, lighting and calibration a workshop is recommended to establish a set of guidelines for image quality used in age determination.

47. Rye whole grain and bran intake compared with refined wheat decreases urinary C-peptide, plasma insulin, and prostate specific antigen in men with prostate cancer

Abstract

Rye whole grain and bran intake has shown beneficial effects on prostate cancer progression in animal models, including lower tumor take rates, smaller tumor volumes, and reduced prostate specific antigen (PSA) concentrations. A human pilot study showed increased apoptosis after consumption of rye bran bread. In this study, we investigated the effect of high intake of rye whole grain and bran on prostate cancer progression as assessed by PSA concentration in men diagnosed with prostate cancer. Seventeen participants were provided with 485 g rye whole grain and bran products (RP) or refined wheat products with added cellulose (WP), corresponding to ~50% of daily energy intake, in a randomized controlled, crossover design. Blood samples were taken from fasting men before and after 2, 4, and 6 wk of treatment and 24-h urine samples were collected before the first intervention period and after treatment. Plasma total PSA concentrations were lower after treatment with RP compared with WP, with a mean treatment effect of -14% (P = 0.04). Additionally, fasting plasma insulin and 24-h urinary C-peptide excretion were lower after treatment with R P compared with WP (P < 0.01 and P = 0.01, respectively). Daily excretion of 5 lignans was higher after the RP treatment than after the WP treatment (P < 0.001). We conclude that whole grain and bran from rye resulted in significantly lower plasma PSA compared with a cellulose-supplemented refined wheat diet in patients with prostate cancer. The effect may be related to inhibition of prostate cancer progression caused by decreased exposure to insulin, as indicated by plasma insulin and urinary C-peptide excretion. J. Abstract

Alkylresorcinols (AR), phenolic lipids exclusively present in the outer parts of wheat and rye grains, have been proposed as concentration biomarkers of whole-grain wheat and rye intake. A key feature of a good biomarker is high reproducibility, which indicates how accurately a single sample reflects the true mean biomarker concentration caused by a certain intake. In this study, the short- to medium-term reproducibility of plasma AR was determined using samples from a crossover intervention study, where men with prostate cancer (n = 17) were fed rye whole-grain/bran or refined wheat products for 6-wk periods. AR homologs C17:0 and C21:0 differed between the treatments (P< 0.001). The reproducibility determined by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was high (intervention period 1 : ICC = 0.90 [95% CI = 0.82-0.98], intervention period 2: ICC = 0.88 [95% CI = 0.78-0.98]). The results show that a single fasting plasma sample could be used to estimate the mean plasma AR concentration during a 6-wk intervention period with constant intake at a precision of [+ or -] 20% (80% CI). This suggests that the plasma AR concentration can be used as a reliable short- to medium-term biomarker for whole-grain wheat and rye under intervention conditions where intake is kept constant.
