This paper explores the social impacts of COVID-19 on migrants living in three major African cities: Accra, Johannesburg, and Nairobi. Given the importance of social support networks to mobile populations, particularly in areas with limited access to essential services, understanding how the pandemic disrupted social relations underscores the broader health and economic impacts of COVID-19 on migrant communities. Using a large scale 2021 survey of nine migrant neighborhoods located across three African mega-cities, we comparatively analyze migrant social interactions during the first year of the pandemic. We find that while migrant social interactions decreased in Accra and Nairobi, living in Johannesburg was significantly associated with unchanged or increased social interactions in the first year of the pandemic. We situate these findings with municipal and country-level variation of COVID-19 policy responses within each city. In particular, we illuminate how the severity of the pandemic and response in South Africa may have catalyzed opportunities for migrants to increase social engagements within their everyday lives. By understanding how compound challenges impacted migrant life, this paper contributes to the emerging area of comparative studies on the effects of COVID-19 on migrant populations, and urban populations within the Global South more broadly. This article contributes to an understanding of how real estate financialisation unfolds within a city in the global South, Johannesburg. It firstly shows that compared to what has been witnessed in the global North, real estate financialisation in South Africa is characteristically conservative: market actors do not engage in high-risk, low-income neighbourhoods. Indeed, in Johannesburg, financialisation has displayed minimal interest in residential markets. Instead, financialisation in the city has been driven by commercial property investments, typically in the form of urban enclaves such as securitised office parks, malls, mixed-use developments, and increasingly ‘satellite cities’ built from scratch. This article considers how the selective character of financialisation in the country is mediated by power relations in the global political economy. In particular, it highlights how South Africa’s status as an ‘emerging market’ encourages a prudent lending regime for domestic financial institutions and real estate actors.

Literature on heritage tourism planning in sub-Saharan Africa is underdeveloped. The aim in this paper is to investigate one highly significant heritage site, which is located in metropolitan Johannesburg, South Africa’s leading urban tourism destination. The specific focus is on Kliptown, a township of modern Soweto, situated 25 km south-west of Johannesburg city centre. In South African history, Kliptown is important in the anti-apartheid struggle for hosting the 1955 Congress of the People and the signing of the Freedom Charter. The planning of Kliptown as a destination for heritage tourism and its local impacts for physical area regeneration are analysed. It is demonstrated that at Kliptown, as has been the case with several other heritage tourism projects implemented during the post-apartheid period, the promised developmental effects for local communities have not materialised.

Scholars examining racial stereotyping and prejudice in racially organised social systems have largely focused on how non-White ethnic and racial groups experience racial stereotyping in White-majority national contexts such as the US, Australia and European countries. There is only scant scholarship on experiences of ethno-racial communities in Black-majority countries such as South Africa, a country where Whites are a minority. Even though there is ample scholarly work on racial stereotyping of racial groups in South Africa such as Coloured people, much of it is focused on their experiences during colonial and Apartheid eras. Little is understood about how Coloured people experience racial stigmatisation in post-Apartheid South Africa. This paper addresses this gap. Based on interviews with fourteen Coloured participants from Westbury, Johannesburg, this study found that many interviewees claimed that Coloured South Africans were negatively racially stereotyped as people who use drugs, as aggressive and violent people, as alcoholics and as criminals. Many participants also resisted and countered the negative stereotypes by talking about Coloured people in positive ways, which shows their agency. The negative stereotyping of Coloured people which prevailed during colonial and Apartheid times is still deployed by society to describe Coloured people in post-Apartheid South Africa. To capture the continuity of negative stereotyping in South Africa about Coloured people, I developed the analytical term of 'perpetual racial stereotyping'. Many decades after the end of the Apartheid system, negative racial stereotyping of Coloured South Africans still continues in everyday life, and Coloured people are still associated with racist prejudices, narratives, discourses and stereotypes that were invented many decades ago by settler colonialism and Apartheid. Dominant theoretical conversations on experiences of racial discrimination are focused on how Black and other non-White people perceive and experience racial discrimination in White majority racial systems; however, research is scant on experiences of racial discrimination of racial minorities in Black majority social systems. This paper addresses this lacuna by exploring perceived experiences of racial discrimination of Coloured people in Johannesburg, South Africa, a racial minority in a Black majority country. Fourteen in-depth individual interviews were conducted with participants. Analysis of the interviews resulted in many interviewees claiming race-based discrimination in housing, employment, service delivery, political representation and education. A few participants, however, claimed that Black South Africans are also experiencing socioeconomic problems like Coloured South Africans. Racial discrimination theory and social exclusion theory are used as perspectives for the study. Based on the findings, I argue that the perceived experiences of racial discrimination of most of the participants of the study can be explained by three interrelated structural forces, namely legacies of historical racial exclusions, the neoliberal macro-economic order and government neglect. Solid waste constitutes one of the most pressing environmental problems, requiring urgent action from urban managers to find appropriate management mechanisms. The rapid increase in municipal solid waste generation is undoubtedly due to the accelerated population growth rate triggered by massive rural-to-urban migration. This paper analyses solid waste management challenges in low-income communities in South Africa, using a case study from Alexandra, Johannesburg. Using qualitative and quantitative research approaches, findings revealed that solid waste is not reliably collected and transported in low-income communities in South Africa. The main obstacles include the scarcity of resources and equipment necessary for waste treatment. To widely involve residents of Alexandra Township in the waste management process, the municipal council should embark on a public awareness campaign. The findings further encourage effective waste sorting techniques, such as separating biodegradable from non-biodegradable waste, so that valuable goods can be taken to the local government recycling centre. The results further encourage the involvement of the homeless and unemployed in the recycling and waste management process, thereby reducing the shortage of human resources and creating jobs. These issues are analysed within the context of evolving arguments that focus on developing a pro-poor approach in solid waste management that may present an opportunity for achieving sustainable solid waste management in Johannesburg, South Africa. Religion and spirituality are powerful social forces in contemporary South Africa. Traditional Health Practitioners (THPs) are commonly consulted for both spiritual and medical ailments as a first line of care. Many studies have assessed African traditional health seeking behaviors but few have examined beliefs, practices, and behaviors of THPs themselves. This study sought to explore spiritual worldviews among South African THPs. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 THPs in Johannesburg, South Africa between January and May, 2022. Interviews were transcribed and translated into English. Data were managed using NVivo 12 software and thematically analyzed. The majority of THPs interviewed indicated that initiation as a THP was almost always preceded by a sickness accompanied by dreams/visions that represented an "ancestral calling" to become a healer. Most THPs also trained as both sangomas—who healed according to traditional beliefs—and prophets—who healed according to Christian beliefs. This reflects a syncretic relationship between traditional African beliefs and Christianity. However, not all churches are accepting of traditional beliefs and subsequently these THPs are members only at non-Pentecostal AIC churches who blend both African and Christian practices. Similar to these forms of religious pluralism melding Christianity and traditional beliefs, many THPs also often practice medical pluralism, mixing Western treatments with traditional practices/medicines. THPs are able to adapt elements of Western and African beliefs into healing practices that span multiple religious and medical fields. Thus, collaborative and decentralized healthcare services may be highly acceptable among such a pluralistic community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reporting from ongoing research and planning with low-income residents in Nairobi, Lagos and Johannesburg, this field note discusses infrastructure-led sustainability transitions that are in progress, probable and possible from the perspective of Africa's politically marginalized urban majority. Its authors probe to what extent efforts to advance more sustainable urban futures in African cities can foster climate justice – not only in terms of resource distribution and infrastructural access but also in terms of political rights, recognition and participation in decision-making about what those futures should or could be. They suggest different ways by which engaging with the infrastructural lives of politically marginalized urban subjects and collectives may allow reframing of dominant, donor-driven sustainability agendas. This paper theorises the discursive construction of sewerage and sewage in relation to Johannesburg's Jukskei river. In the context of failing national and local water infrastructures, rivers in South Africa are filthier than ever and public trust in politicians is similarly polluted. We explore key moments in public discourse about sewage in the Jukskei, to consider how the visible and affective traces of faecal matter in the river speak to a broader sense of post-colonial collapse of both infrastructure and trust in those responsible for it. We argue that as both material and metaphor, shit-in-the-river serves to expose maladministration and corruption on the part of the government. But it also highlights the fragility of modernity itself as a project. In the context of massive looming water crises, huge shifts in both culture and infrastructure will be required to de-faecalise rivers specifically, and water supplies in general, in South Africa. Background: There exists a dearth of research on the psychological experiences of childhood communication disorders. Caregivers of these children are one source who can provide us with this information since the child exists within a system. Literature on the experiences of caregivers of children with communication disorders, specifically in the South African city context, is lacking. Objectives: The article presents the reported experiences of six parental caregivers raising a child with a communication disorder within Johannesburg. Method: Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and underwent an interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results: Five themes are presented: feeling out of control; barriers to accessing services; caregivers left speechless; a misunderstood disability; and relinquishing control: ‘I needed to be a mommy’. Conclusion: The caregivers relayed an initially negative experience in raising a child with a communication disorder, marred with worry and fear for the future. In accessing services, they narrated their experiences of multiple barriers to access, including an overreliance on the private sector, financial barriers, time constraints, limited resources and poor information on available resources. Eventually, the caregivers were able to identify strengths, skills and capabilities within their children and themselves that allowed for adjustment and coping. Contribution: The findings highlight the importance of considering how barriers to care may marginalise and seclude parental caregivers. Over time, the caregivers were able to empower themselves through building their own knowledge and reformulating their narratives by challenging assumptions and retitling the source of disability as a product of the failure of society.

In 1887 the government of the Transvaal Republic appointed its first police chief for Johannesburg. The choice fell upon A.J.G. de la Rey whose services to the state during the Stellaland disturbances made him, according to the government, the most suitable person to maintain law and order in a developing community like Johannesburg. The people of this new town, however, found De la Rey unacceptable because he was allegedly guilty of criminal acts resulting from violent tendencies in his character. The withdrawal of his appointment as head of the police, for the sake of peace in the Golden City, was therefore beneficial to all those concerned.

Irregular and rapid urbanisation became a feature of South Africa in the I920s and 1930s. The health problems presented by settlements on the periphery of towns and cities attracted the attention of the Union government, and in 1938 a committee was appointed to investigate the matter. One of the recommendations of this committee was that the peri-urban areas to the north of Johannesburg be subjected to some form of local government. The Peri-Urban Areas Health Board was established in 1943 to provide this. Three local area committees were created in this area: Northern Johannesburg, North-Eastern Johannesburg, and North-Western Johannesburg. Despite the practical benefits of its administration, the residents of these areas attempted on numerous occasions to secede from the control of the Peri-Urban Board. These efforts culminated in the foundation of Randburg in 1959 and Sandton in 1969.

The period 1944 - 1952 saw the rise and fall of the mobile markets of Johannesburg, an experiment in municipal food hawking. The scheme was an attempt to counter the high food prices of the period. Much controversy surrounded the introduction of the mobile food vans. At first the vans served the lower-income areas of White Johannesburg but later geographically extended their zone of operation into higher income suburbs. At the peak of the programme, seven vans were in action. The decline of the mobile markets was attributed to their high operating costs, a precipitous fall in consumer patronage, intense competition from private retailers and hawkers, and to the return of more normal marketing conditions after the war.

This paper was aimed at exploring challenges faced by caregivers raising children left by deported migrant parents in Johannesburg, South Africa. Researchers employed a qualitative research approach and adopted an exploratory case study design. The sample consists of 12 caregivers, selected through purposeful sampling, engaging in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was used to derive key themes from the caregivers’ narratives, allowing for a comprehensive exploration of their experiences and the challenges faced in informal caregiving. The findings reveal a pervasive informal caregiving landscape, where caregivers assume parental responsibilities without formal government involvement. Caregivers face challenges such as financial constraints, limited access to statutory social services, access to healthcare barriers, feelings of stress and helplessness, and difficulties in family tracing and reunification. The lack of documentation for migrant children exacerbates these challenges, hindering their access to essential services. The study concludes that the informal nature of caregiving arrangements for children of deported migrants in South Africa poses significant risks to their well-being. The study recommends the inclusion of formalising alternative care arrangements, improving access to statutory social services, addressing access to healthcare barriers, providing support for caregivers’ mental health and financial well-being, advocating for documentation, and strengthening family tracing and reunification processes.

Introduction: Transport-related social exclusion has been studied in many countries, and from many different perspectives. In Africa, however, there is little recent research into the phenomenon, even though African cities tend to have poor transport services, urban sprawl is extensive usually resulting in long travel times and high travel costs, and certain areas experience high levels of crime. By implication, there are several factors that impact the ability of people to access economic and societal opportunities, however these are not well documented. Building on previous work from several authors, this research sought to describe transport-related social exclusion in a large metropolitan area in an emerging economy. Methods: Using a qualitative methodology, 60 interviews were conducted with City of Johannesburg residents. The data was analyzed using manual thematic and classic content analysis. Results: The study found that residents often did not have access to services due to availability, but also that economic, geographic and fear-based exclusion were particularly prevalent in the sample, although there were several other psychological exclusion dimensions, as well as information exclusion. Discussion: This study is the first recent study in South Africa to consider a wide range of commuters from varying demographic strata, thus providing a novel perspective on TRSE in amajor urban area in the country. The study recommends that policy actions be considered, taking into account the minibus taxi industry, which is often overlooked in government policy. TRSE should also be an inherent element in urban (and other) transport planning, as well as take into account the broader societal realities faced by citizens. Future research directions include conducting broader quantitative studies across a variety of urban areas in South Africa, and beyond, to determine specific TRSE dimensions in various urban areas. Policy analysis is also recommended, to determine TRSE policy gaps and align interventions with specific commuter needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Walkability is generally defined by the extent to which the built environment supports and encourages walking by promoting pedestrian comfort, connectivity and convenience. This paper scrutinizes the steps taken in Johannesburg to develop walkability policies and projects. It draws on empirical evidence from the pedestrian policies (e.g., the Corridors of Freedom) and pedestrian projects (e.g., the Grayston Pedestrian Bridge) recently introduced. Rather than focusing on the merits of walkability or the ease of its application, this paper highlights the misunderstandings of introducing walkability in Johannesburg. The concept is particularly problematic in Johannesburg, where the "unpleasantness of walking" and "walkability-with-people" is insufficiently considered. In a broader sense, this discussion aims to first understand urban planning in an African/Global South city, and then to decolonize transport planning by bringing the experiences in Johannesburg to the forefront. Such a critical reading of the intertwined and overlapping practices of policymaking provides additional insights into the processes of urban planning and transport in Johannesburg and beyond. Background: The high burden of cryptococcal meningitis (CM) among people living with HIV persists despite widespread access to antiretroviral therapy. Efforts to prevent CM among people living with HIV could be hindered by a limited understanding of their lived experiences of CM and its diagnosis. Objectives: To explore and describe the experiences of people diagnosed with HIV-associated CM in routine care. Two public healthcare facilities in Johannesburg, South Africa. Method: This was a qualitative-methods exploratory, descriptive, phenomenological study. We conducted semi-structured, individual in-depth interviews with nine purposively sampled participants (comprising 5 men and 4 women). Data were analysed using the Moustakas phenomenological approach. Results: Five themes and several sub-themes emerged from the data. Participants described their experiences of being diagnosed, which were marked by intense headaches. Diagnosis of CM led to reduced quality of life, fear of death, and loss of income. Participants described their CM treatment experience and health-seeking behaviour including self-medication, seeking help from traditional healers and general practitioners and utilising public health facilities as a last resort. Barriers to care included negative healthcare workers’ attitudes, unhealthy lifestyles, and poor knowledge of CM. Conclusion: People with HIV-associated CM face negative impacts prior to and after diagnosis. These patients struggled to access timely quality healthcare. Patients starting or restarting antiretroviral therapy, and thus at risk for CM, should receive CM education as part of HIV counselling.

ABSTRACTGentrification has led to the eviction and displacement of many people from working-class areas around the world. However, the relationship between gentrification and displacement has sparked much debate in the literature, with some researchers downplaying displacement, while others have argued that gentrification can occur without the displacement of people. These studies have tended to be quantitative in nature. However, there are few qualitative accounts of the experience of displacement and there is little consideration of the affective or phenomenological dimensions of displacement in current debates about gentrification. This is in part because researchers have tended not to engage directly with displaced people as it is often difficult to locate them. The purpose of this article is to describe the essence of displacement from the perspective of a group of individuals who were evicted from their homes in a gentrifying inner-city area of Johannesburg, South Africa. Through the methodology of transcendental phenomenology, five interrelated themes were derived from in-depth interviews with the participants. The findings show that the essence of displacement is one of great pain, loss and trauma, which disrupts the lifeworld of those displaced and impacts their overall health and well-being.

The Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences at the University of Pécs, which serves as the foundation for our journal, maintains a longstanding partnership with Stellenbosch University, particularly with its team of dedicated geographers. This collaboration led to a visit from Professor Ronnie Donaldson, our guest editor for this issue, who joined us in May 2023 at our invitation. During his visit, in addition to delivering an insightful lecture on rural gentrification, the seeds of this special issue were sown, providing an exciting opportunity to showcase current research from the Small Town Research Unit of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Stellenbosch University, as well as other esteemed geography departments in South Africa, including Rhodes University, North-West University, and the University of Johannesburg.

This paper examines community perceptions of the impact of solid waste management (SWM) on human health and the environment in Diepsloot, Johannesburg, South Africa. It is argued that poor SWM has negative impacts on human health and the environment. Using semi-structured telephonic and one-to-one interviews with members of a community of Diepsloot and environmental non-governmental organisations involved in SWM in Diepsloot, it finds that mismanagement of solid waste affects human health and the environment. The consequences of this situation include respiratory disorders among the people and the destruction of aquatic habitats and reduction of the bullfrog population, among other negative impacts. This situation is a result of the community’s collective ignorance on SWM issues and poor service delivery. The results highlight the need to improve service delivery and a change in community attitude towards SWM in Diepsloot, which will reduce the impact of SWM on human health and the environment. Social networks play an important role in migration processes as they provide information about the host country to migrants prior to their departure and arrival. Studies on migrant social networks conducted in South Africa offer limited insights into how these networks influence residential patterns. They do not address why Zimbabwean migrants are concentrated in Hillbrow a neighbourhood located in the inner city of Johannesburg. Therefore, snowball sampling was used to find 11 willing Zimbabwean migrants to participate in the study. The data were collected using face-to-face semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Social networks shaped the residential choices of Zimbabwean migrants, who relied on strong ties rather than weak ties to make decisions on residing in Hillbrow. Social networks and Hillbrow's proximity to the city centre were key factors influencing migrants' residential choices. Residential choices were also shaped by contextual specificities in the neighbourhood and South Africa at large. Hillbrow emerges as Zimbabwean migrants' preferred destination that is safe from xenophobic attacks relative to townships.

Researchers have extensively studied self-identification among Coloured people in different places in post-Apartheid South Africa and finding varied self-identification patterns. Little is known about how Coloured people in Westbury, described as a Coloured area, in Johannesburg, self-identify in the post-Apartheid context. The aim of this paper is to explore how Coloured people in Westbury self-identify. This paper forms part of a larger study that explored how Coloured people in Westbury experienced racial marginalization in post-Apartheid South Africa. Eight male and six female participants were recruited through convenience and snowball sampling techniques. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data. Participants self-identified themselves in several ways. While some subscribed to the Apartheid-created Coloured classification, other participants identified as multiracial South African, South African, South African and Coloured, half-Black, mixed-race South African, and so-called Coloured. I argue that individuals in post-Apartheid South Africa are defining themselves in multiple and complex ways rather than rigidly subscribing to Apartheid racial categories. I also argue that historically race-coded areas in South Africa do not necessarily coincide with self-identification choices of their residents. Furthermore, even if Coloured South Africans are reclassified as ‘Black People’ in Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998 (EEA) and Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment Act 53 of 2003 (BEE), participants eschewed self-defining as Black People.

The present study aims at evaluating the quality of shallow groundwater (SGW) and its suitability for irrigation purpose in the most urbanised part of Johannesburg city, South Africa. The SGW samples were collected in three consecutive years and analysed for 20 selected physicochemical parameters, and heavy metals. The results were compared with the South African water quality, and Food and Agricultural Organization irrigation water quality guidelines, and standard indices derived from laboratory outputs. The results of the study show that all physiochemical parameters and heavy metals were within the limits set by both guidelines for irrigation purposes, except for potassium (3.58 mg∙dm –3) and manganese levels (3.152 mg∙dm –3). The calculated irrigation parameter values of sodium adsorption ratio ( SAR), sodium percentage (Na%), residual sodium carbonate ( RSC), magnesium hazard ( MH), Kelly’s ratio ( KR) and permeability index ( PI) were within the permissible range of irrigation water quality standards. The findings of this study provide helpful information for decision-makers such as utilisation of the studied groundwater for irrigation uses.

Sexual health is essential to the complete well-being of every individual, and provision of all-inclusive and superior-quality information about living a healthful sexual life is necessary for everyone in a community, especially for youths. Using data collected in 2019 from 467 male and female immigrant youths between 18 and 34 years of age who resided in a suburb of the inner city of Johannesburg, this secondary analytical study examined the determining factors of sources of information about sexual health, using condoms inconsistently, and engaging in multiple sexual relationships. Binary logistic regression and negative binomial regression models were employed to understand the relationships between explanatory variables and outcome variables. The determinants of the sources of information about sexual health were gender, educational attainment level, wealth index, and age at first sexual intercourse. Gender, age group, marital status, and migration status were the determining factors for inconsistency of condom use. Gender, migration status, marital status, age at first sexual intercourse, and having had sex while drunk were the determinants of engaging in multiple sexual relationships. Avoiding behaviours that expose individuals to sexual risks and the negative consequences of unprotected sexual activity is crucial for youths. This study shows that receiving information about sexual health from informal sources and high-risk sexual behaviour are major public health problems amongst the immigrant youths.

Mental disorders are among the most poorly treated illnesses in sub-Saharan Africa. It is estimated that 70%–80% of South Africans consult traditional health practitioners for the treatment of psychological ailments. As traditional health practitioners maintain a strong role in assessing and treating patients with mental illness in this context, this study contributes to the burgeoning research literature on the topic. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 traditional health practitioners in Johannesburg, South Africa, between January and May 2022. Interviews were transcribed and translated into English. The data were managed using NVivo 12 software and thematically analysed. Traditional health practitioners interviewed generally perceived mental illness to be of supernatural causation, either as a result of bewitchment, a calling for patients to become THPs themselves, due to displeased ancestors, or due to natural causes. Traditional health practitioners identified eight primary treatments that they use for treating mental illness. Among these were throwing of bones (tinhlolo) to start communicating with ancestors, steaming (ukufutha) to start a cleansing process, sneezing (umbhemiso) to forcefully dispel the spirit causing the illness, induced vomiting (phalaza), and the administration of laxatives (mahlabekufeni) to remove the spirits poisoning the body as well as animal sacrifice to purge spirits and communicate with ancestors. This is all followed by cutting (ukucaba), which is the final part of the treatment and ensures that the evil spirit cannot return. Due to the ubiquity of traditional health practitioner usage for mental illness in sub-Saharan Africa, it is essential to understand what conceptions traditional health practitioners have of the aetiology of these disorders as well as their modalities for administering treatment. This essay examines two South African responses to Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway (1925): Fiona Melrose's Johannesburg (2017), and Karel Schoeman's Die noorderlig (published in Afrikaans in 1975). Melrose's novel patterns character and plot directly on Woolf's with allusions to her biography and to other reworkings of the text. Schoeman's performs a less obvious homage to Mrs Dalloway in its exploration of the tensions between politics and poetics and formal engagement with the demands of experimentation and realism. The essay assesses these different modes of response, points to Woolf's influence beyond the anglophone literary world, and positions Schoeman's work (in particular) as deserving greater attention from those speaking - and writing about - English (and its inheritances) in South Africa. Airborne fungal spores and pollen (aerospora), synergistic with air pollution, are key triggers of allergic respiratory diseases. Effective diagnosis and treatment requires up-to-date location-specific knowledge on the temporal variability of aerospora types and levels. Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and has grown substantially in three decades, with changes in ground cover, population density and air pollution, yet until now, no continuous aerospora sampling has occurred. We present a daily two-year (August 2019–July 2021) aerospora assemblage for Johannesburg and explore temporal characteristics of 13 dominant aerospora in relation to daily meteorological variables (pressure, rainfall, relative humidity, temperature and wind characteristics). February–July, July–September and January-July represent high-risk periods for fungal spores [(Alternaria alternata (Fries. ex Keissler), Ascospores, Aspergillus niger (Van Tieghem), Penicillium chrysogenum (Thom), Cladosporium graminum (Corda), Epicoccum nigrum (Link), Helminthosporium solani (Durieu and Montagne) Nigrospora sphaerica (Saccardo ex. Mason), Smuts Ustilago nuda (Jensen ex. Rostrup) and Torula herbarum (Link)], trees (Cupressus, Morus and Platanus) and grass (Poaceae), respectively. Using a generalised additive model, results show that daily meteorological characteristics explained 7–32% of daily aerospora variability, with the largest effect on tree pollen. Rainfall, relative humidity and temperature influenced daily fungal spore and Poaceae counts, with moderate/low rainfall (< 20 mm), higher/mid-ranging relative humidity (~ 40–60%) and temperatures of ~ 15–20 °C associated with higher counts during high-risk periods. Rainfall predominantly influenced tree counts during high-risk periods, with higher counts occurring on low rainfall (<10 mm) days. Dolomitic aquifers are regarded as important groundwater storage sites in South Africa. Since these aquifers occur in a semi-arid climatic setting with low rainfall, often characterized by a torrential downpour and high potential evapotranspiration, the occurrence of active recharge is very limited (<5% of mean annual rainfall) as compared with the rainfall amount. The Malmani dolomites that have undergone greenschist metamorphism contain widespread caves and open karst structures at shallow levels, which facilitate groundwater recharge, circulation, storage and spring occurrence. However, the open karst structures receive recharge that passes through fractures in the vadose zone, which regulates the recharge through retardation and mixing processes. The integrated approach involving major ions and stable isotopes of water was applied to understand the recharge mechanism. The cave drip water samples were represented by the δ18O values of −3.95‰ to 3.32‰ and the δ2H values ranging from −11.0‰ to 27.7‰. On the other hand, the rainfall isotope results for δ18O fall between −16.11‰ and 5.38‰, while the δ2H values fall between −105.7‰ and 35.6‰. The most depleted Malapa springs contain δ18O of −5.64‰ and δ2H of −32.4‰. Based on the results, the mixing of water in the vadose zone could be considered as an indicator of the dominance of a slow-diffusive flow process in the aquifer as a result of poor fracture permeability. However, regional groundwater circulation through faults and dykes besides interconnected karst structures helps in generating highly productive karst springs in the region characterized by low rainfall. Shannon Walsh and Arya Lalloo are co-directors of the documentary feature Jeppe on a Friday, which documents life in the Johannesburg neighbourhood of Jeppestown. Bettina Malcomess and Dorothee Kreutzfeldt are co-authors of a book on Johannesburg entitled Not No Place (Jacana Media, 2013). What follows is an edited transcript of a conversation about the process of making the documentary film and the book, on the occasion of their tenth anniversary, with special focus on the distinct approaches to, and difficulties of, representing the city of Johannesburg.

Background. There are limited data on the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH). Objectives. The aim was to study the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with MG admitted to the CMJAH over two decades. Methods. A retrospective study was undertaken of patients with MG admitted to the multidisciplinary ICU of CMJAH over a 20-year period, from 1998 to 2017. Demographic data, clinical features, management and outcomes of patients were assessed and reviewed from the case records. Results. Thirty-four patients with MG were admitted to the ICU during this period: 24 female and 10 male. The mean age ± SD was 37.4 ± 13.0 years, with a range of 16 - 66 years. Four patients were human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive. The mean length of stay (LOS) in ICU was 10.6 ± 20.1 days, ranging from 1 to 115 days. Two patients were diagnosed with MG in the ICU after failure to wean from the ventilator. Overall, 22 patients were intubated and ventilated on admission. Morbidities included self-extubation, aspiration pneumonia and iatrogenic pneumothorax. History of thymectomy was present in 12 patients. The treatments received for MG included pyridostigmine (73.5%), corticosteroids (55.9%), azathioprine (35.3%), plasmapheresis (26.5%) and intravenous immunoglobulin (8.8%). The overall mortality in the ICU was 5.9%. Conclusion. MG is a serious disorder with considerable morbidity and mortality. It is, however, a potentially manageable disease, provided that appropriate ICU resources are available. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mainstream literature on global cities tends to explain the internationalization of cities almost exclusively from the perspective of recent developments in global capitalism, developments that have put cities at the heart of an increasingly globalized, financialized, and deregulated world economy. The internationalization of these so-called global cities is seen as a response to, and is conditioned by, external, and mainly economic, exigencies. Research on the foreign relations of city governments has followed in this tradition, with a predominant focus on the global drivers and manifestations, as well as the systemic implications of this phenomenon. Little academic attention has been given to the domestic contexts within which city governments develop and exercise their international agency. This paper is inspired by the emergence of alternative accounts in the global cities literature, which have underscored the importance of the domestic context in making sense of the contemporary internationalization of cities, to analyze the domestic sources of the City of Johannesburg's foreign relations from 2011 to 2016. While acknowledging Johannesburg's global cities ambition as a major driver of the city government's international relations during this period, we identify and analyze a set of local and national factors that equally inspired and conditioned the city's foreign engagements. These include the huge socio-economic and spatial divide that continues to define the city, the influence of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and its doctrine of progressive internationalism, as well as the then mayor's internationalist outlook and domestic political ambitions. Cities engage in branding to present themselves as attractive locations. Some seek to gain recognition as world cities this way. The article identifies liveable environments with inclusive societies, events/mega-events, and iconic architecture as key components of such strategies. These thoughts are applied to Cape Town and Johannesburg. The former brands itself as an 'opportunity city.' It fits well into world city making through attraction as a place to live and work, and a related focus on the knowledge elite. The present study aims at evaluating the quality of shallow groundwater (SGW) and its suitability for irrigation purpose in the most urbanised part of Johannesburg city, South Africa. The SGW samples were collected in three consecutive years and analysed for 20 selected physicochemical parameters, and heavy metals. The results were compared with the South African water quality, and Food and Agricultural Organization irrigation water quality guidelines, and standard indices derived from laboratory outputs. The results of the study show that all physiochemical parameters and heavy metals were within the limits set by both guidelines for irrigation purposes, except for potassium (3.58 mg·dm-3) and manganese levels (3.152 mg·dm-3). The calculated irrigation parameter values of sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), sodium percentage (Na%), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), magnesium hazard (MH), Kelly's ratio (KR) and permeability index (PI) were within the permissible range of irrigation water quality standards. Waste management strategies specified in the hierarchy of waste management were evaluated by applying a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) technique called the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to choose a strategy for managing Johannesburg (JHB) city's food waste. Under the different weighting scenarios for the evaluation criteria considered in this AHP, the recovery strategy scored an average of 41% while other strategies each scored 33%, 29% and 22% for prevention and reduction, treatment and disposal, re-use and recycle, respectively. Optimisation of resource recovery strategies from food waste is recommended for further consideration and investigation by the JHB municipality in its attempt to promote a circular economy and surmount food waste hurdles.
