Abstract

Continuous monitoring of dynamic systems in the energy industry can lead to significant cost reductions by optimizing operations and reducing downtime through automatic integrity monitoring. In this paper, we focus on a challenging scenario, continuous subsurface monitoring through passive seismic tomography. Our proposed solution to address this challenge is enabled by marrying low-cost low-power sensing design, large-scale wireless (cellular) Internet of Things (IoT) networking, and advanced edge/cloud computing technologies. We demonstrate that the proposed data compression technique, application protocol design, and signal processing approach at edge sensors and cloud solution, enable us to handle data-demanding subsurface tomography problem using commodity cellular IoT technologies paving the way towards changing the traditional wisdom in our business. Compared to the state-of-the-art, the proposed solution is scalable, easily replicable, and considerably more power-efficient. The simulation results as well as a proof-of-concept (PoC) field test in collaboration with our partners (Vodafone and Nikhef) corroborate the feasibility of the proposed ideas.

Abstract

We present a detailed characterization of surface and underground seismic noise measured at Limburg in the south of the Netherlands. This location is the Euregio Meuse–Rhine candidate for hosting Einstein Telescope, a future observatory for gravitational waves. Seismic noise measurements were performed with an array of seismometers installed on the surface. Passive seismic methods like beamforming were used to extract the propagation wave types of ambient seismic noise and the Rayleigh-wave dispersion in the region. Subsurface shear-wave models sensitive to depths of 300 m were derived by using the Rayleigh-wave dispersion and ellipticity. Subsurface P-wave velocities to depths of 200 m were obtained from an active seismic survey. Wavepath Eikonal tomography was used on the source-receiver refracted-wave travel-times to obtain a subsurface P-wave velocity model. Both the passive and the active seismic data analysis point to the presence of a layered geology with a soft-soil to hard-rock transition occurring at a shallow depth of about 25 to 40 m. The surface arrays are complemented by two permanent tri-axial seismometers installed on the surface and in a borehole at 250 m depth. Their data are used to interpret the surface-wave and body-wave contributions to the observed seismic noise. We use a cross-correlation analysis and compute the theoretical surface-wave eigenfunctions to understand the contributions of the different wave types at different frequencies. We observe that below 4 Hz in the horizontal component and 9 Hz in the vertical component, the seismic noise at depth is dominantly due to surface waves. Above these frequencies a significant contribution can be attributed to both nearby and far-away body-wave sources. At a depth of 250 m we find that the surface noise power has been damped by up to a factor 104 above about 2 Hz. The Limburg geology with soft-soil on top of hard-rock efficiently damps the anthropogenic noise produced at the surface. This implies that Einstein Telescope’s test masses are shielded from anthropogenic seismic noise and construction at greater depth will not bring significant further improvements in this regard. A body-wave background has been identified that contributes about half of the total underground seismic noise at 250 m depth for frequencies above 4 Hz. It remains to be studied if subtraction schemes for Newtonian noise originating from this body-wave background will be necessary. Finally, we estimate an interferometer downtime of about 3% due to regional and teleseismic earthquakes. We believe this is acceptable as it is comparable to current experience at the LIGO and Virgo interferometer sites.

Abstract

An example is provided of how technology from a seemingly far-removed field of science has found its way into seismic surveying equipment. In order to achieve affordable dense sampling to remove adverse seismic-noise effects from gravitational-wave measurements, autonomous, integrated seismic nodes were developed for flexible deployment around the gravitational-wave detector's key components. The required sensitivity is achieved by utilizing a high-sensitivity, 5 Hz geophone in combination with a low noise recording channel, resulting in a self noise of < 1 ng/√Hz at 1 Hz. This specification is also promising for low-frequency single-sensor passive and active seismic acquisition. Ninety-six nodes were deployed during a field trial to demonstrate various novel passive seismic techniques for subsurface and microearthquake characterization using dense surface arrays. This showed the value of an affordable and practical dense surface array in extracting useful subsurface information from seismic noise and characterizing small earthquakes. The nodes were shown to have the long battery life required to be practical in their intended surveys, showing only 50% battery consumption after a 21-day survey at high-gain setting.

Abstract

Summary With the first detection of gravitational waves on September 14, 2015 and subsequent detection of four other binary black hole mergers, significant efforts have been made to improve the detector sensitivity especially at low frequencies. Seismic noise and its gravitational counterpart Newtonian noise are the two main factors limiting the sensitivity at frequencies below 20 Hz. Einstein Telescope is a European project for constructing a third generation gravitational wave detector with an effort to increasing its sensitivity at low frequencies. The detector is to be built 300 m underground to reduce the impact of seismic and Newtonian noise. Limburg, Netherlands is one of the sites for the project. Understanding the spatio-spectral properties of seismic noise at the site and the geology of the area is vital for devising schemes for simulation of seismic and Newtonian noise at desired depths. In this paper we report the results of a reconnaissance passive seismic survey, conducted at the site. Array based methods like beamforming, and seismic interferometry is used to understand the propagation characteristics of the seismic noise in the frequency range 2.5–8.0 Hz. The estimated Rayleigh wave phase velocity is further used to invert for a 1D S-wave velocity model.

Abstract

Three-body B+ -> p (p) over barK(+) and B+ -> p (p) over bar pi(+) decays are studied using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Evidence of CP violation in the B+ -> p (p) over barK(+) decay is found in regions of the phase space, representing the first measurement of this kind for a final state containing baryons. Measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry of the light meson in the p (p) over bar rest frame yield A(FB)(p (p) over barK(+), m(p (p) over bar) (1520)p is measured to be B(B+ -> (Lambda) over bar (1520)p) = (3.15 +/- 0.48 (stat) +/- 0.07 (syst) +/- 0.26 (BF)) x 10(-7), where BF denotes the uncertainty on secondary branching fractions.

Abstract

The lifetime of the $B_c^+$ meson is measured using semileptonic decays having a $J\!/\!\psi$ meson and a muon in the final state. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2\mathrm{~fb^{-1}}$, are collected by the LHCb detector in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $8\,\mathrm{TeV}$. The measured lifetime is $$\tau = 509 \pm 8 \pm 12 \mathrm{~fs},$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract

A search for time-integrated CP violation in D0 -> h-h+ (h=K, pi) decays is presented using 0.62 fb^-1 of data collected by LHCb in 2011. The flavor of the charm meson is determined by the charge of the slow pion in the D*+ -> D0 pi+ and D*- -> D0bar pi- decay chains. The difference in CP asymmetry between D0 -> K-K+ and D0 -> pi-pi+, Delta ACP = ACP(K-K+) - ACP(pi-pi+), is measured to be [-0.82 \pm 0.21(stat.) \pm 0.11(syst.)]%. This differs from the hypothesis of CP conservation by 3.5 standard deviations.

Abstract

The production of View the MathML source mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.9 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The luminosity of the analysed sample is determined using a novel technique, involving measurements of the beam currents, sizes and positions, and is found to be 6.8±1.0 μb−1. Abstract

Measurements of the individual multiplicities of pi+, pi- and pi0 produced in the deep-inelastic scattering of 27.5 GeV positrons on hydrogen are presented. The average charged pion multiplicity is the same as for neutral pions, up to approximately z= 0.7, where z is the fraction of the energy transferred in the scattering process carried by the pion. This result (below z= 0.7) is consistent with isospin invariance. The total energy fraction associated with charged and neutral pions is 0.51 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.08 (syst.) and 0.26 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.04 (syst.), respectively. For fixed z, the measured multiplicities depend on both the negative squared four momentum transfer Q^2 and the Bjorken variable x. The observed dependence on Q^2 agrees qualitatively with the expected behaviour based on NLO-QCD evolution, while the dependence on x is consistent with that of previous data after corrections have been made for the expected Q^2-dependence., Comment: Revised version submitted to the European Physical Journal C; 10 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The influence of the nuclear medium on the production of charged hadrons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering has been studied by the HERMES experiment at DESY using a 27.5 GeV positron beam. The differential multiplicity of charged hadrons and identified charged pions from nitrogen relative to that from deuterium has been measured as a function of the virtual photon energy \nu and the fraction z of this energy transferred to the hadron. There are observed substantial reductions of the multiplicity ratio R_M^h at low \nu and at high z, both of which are well described by a gluon-bremsstrahlung model of hadronization. A significant difference of the \nu-dependence of R_M^h is found between positive and negative hadrons. This is interpreted in terms of a difference between the formation times of protons and pions, using a phenomenological model to describe the \nu- and z-dependence of R_M^h., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, LaTex (RevTeX)

Abstract

Production and decay angular distributions were extracted from measurements of exclusive electroproduction of the rho^0(770) meson over a range in the virtual photon negative four-momentum squared 0.5< Q^2 pi+ pi- decay yielded measurements of eight elements of the spin-density matrix, including one that had not been measured before. The results are consistent with the dominance of helicity-conserving amplitudes and natural parity exchange.
