A shallow subtidal area in the northern Wadden Sea was monitored over 17 years (from 2003 to 2019) for sediment parameters and macrobenthic fauna. Due to the sheltered position of the study area, sediment composition remained rather stable with only minor annual and seasonal variations in sediment granulometry. An intermittend storm (‘Kyrill’) had no significant effect on sediment composition parameters; the construction of an artificial dune along the southern border of the study area had minor transient but no lasting effects on sediment composition. Faunal species richness and total abundance showed the typical seasonality with minimum abundance in late winter and a peak after recruitment in summer. Variations between years in autumn (post-recruitment) abundances were best explained by the number of days with a seawater temperature

Blooms of marine microalgae play a pivotal role in global carbon cycling. Such blooms entail successive blooms of specialized clades of planktonic bacteria that remineralize algal biomass. We investigated the bacterioplankton response to a bloom in the German Bight in spring 2020. Metagenome sequencing at 30 time-points allowed reconstruction of 251 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), 245 representing as yet uncultured species, while corresponding metatranscriptome sequencing highlighted 50 particularly active MAGs. Together with algae, copepod, protist and bacteria diversity and abundance data in combination with physico-chemical data and antibody-based saccharide measurements, we demonstrate (i) how dissolved primary photoassimilated algal and secondary bacterial storage glycans shape the bacterioplankton community composition, and (ii) how grazing on higher trophic levels determines the release of these abundant glycans. We thus elucidate principles governing how bacterioplankton clades respond to algal blooms and collectively remineralize gigatons of carbon annually on a global scale.

Pelagic chlorophyll-a concentrations are key for evaluation of the environmental status and productivity of marine systems, and data can be provided by in situ measurements, remote sensing and modelling. However, modelling chlorophyll-a is not trivial due to its nonlinear dynamics and complexity. In this study, chlorophyll-a concentrations for the Helgoland Roads time series were modeled using a number of measured water and environmental parameters. We chose three common machine learning algorithms from the literature: the support vector machine regressor, neural networks multi-layer perceptron regressor and random forest regressor. Results showed that the support vector machine regressor slightly outperformed other models. The evaluation with a test dataset and verification with an independent validation dataset for chlorophyll-a concentrations showed a good generalization capacity, evaluated by the root mean squared errors of less than 1 µg L−1. Feature selection and engineering are important and improved the models significantly, as measured in performance, improving the adjusted R2 by a minimum of 48%. We tested SARIMA in comparison and found that the univariate nature of SARIMA does not allow for better results than the machine learning models. Additionally, the computer processing time needed was much higher (prohibitive) for SARIMA. In marine settings, anthropogenic disturbances and climate change increase the rate of biological invasions. Predicting still undescribed invasive alien species (IAS) is needed for preparing timely management responses. We tested a strategy for discovering new potential IAS using DNA in a trans-equatorial expedition onboard RV Polarstern. During one-month travel, species inside ballast water experienced oxygen depletion, warming, darkness and ammonium stress. Many organisms died but several phytoplankton and zooplankton survivors resisted and were detected through a robust combination of individual sampling, DNA barcoding and metabarcoding, new in ballast water studies. Ammonium was identified as an important influential factor to explain diversity changes in phytoplankton and zooplankton. Some species reproduced until the end of the travel. These species tolerant to travel stress could be targeted as potential IAS and prioritized for designing control measures. Introducing resistance to travel stress in biosecurity risk analysis would be recommended.

Based on the past 150 years of research and ongoing time-series observations we give a comprehensive overview of marine species composition around the island of Sylt in the eastern North Sea. A total of 2758 species is listed according to the categories microplankton (591 species), zooplankton (137), nekton (118), benthic microflora (158), benthic macroflora (125), benthic micro-and meiofauna (1204), benthic macrofauna (509), birds and mammals (91), and neobiota (39). Plants account for a third of the species, most (85%) of them are microscopic Chromista. Among animals, 60% of the species are micro- and meiofauna though this faunal component is still insufficiently known. These figures are similar to records from the southern North Sea and therefore may by typical for temperate climate sedimentary coastal areas. A comparison with the total of marine species suggests that the small benthic fauna may be severely understudied over most of the world. Analysis of global change depends on sound baseline data and species inventories like this can assist in the detection of biodiversity changes. They emphasise rare species and the full range of local habitats while time-series measurements usually rely on a few selected habitats and biotic components to generate a very general picture of the state of an ecosystem.

Particulate inorganic matter (PIM) is a key component in estuarine and coastal systems and plays a critical role in trace metal cycling. Better understanding of coastal dynamics and biogeochemistry requires improved quantification of PIM in terms of its concentration, size distribution, and mineral species composition. The angular pattern of light scattering contains detailed information about the size and composition of particles. These volume scattering functions(VSFs) were measured in Mobile Bay, Alabama, USA, a dynamic, PIM dominated coastal environment. From measured VSFs, we determined through inversion the particle size distributions (PSDs) of major components of PIM, amorphous silica and clay minerals. An innovation here is the extension of our reported PSDs significantly into the submicron range. The PSDs of autochthonous amorphous silica exhibit two unique features: a peak centered at about 0.8 μm between 0.2 and 4 μm and a very broad shoulder essentially extending from 4 μm to >100 μm. With an active and steady particle source from blooming diatoms, the shapes of amorphous silica PSDs for sizes 10 μm inside the bay, likely due to wind-induced resuspension of larger frustules that have settled. Compared to autochthonous amorphous silica, the allochthonous clay minerals are denser and exhibit relatively narrower PSDs with peaks located between 1 and 4 μm. Preferential settling of larger mineral particles as well as the smaller but denser illite component further narrowed the size distributions of clay minerals as they were being transported outside the bay. The derived PSDs also indicated a very dynamic situation in Mobile Bay relative to the cold weather front that passed through during the experiment. With northerly winds of speeds up to 15 m s-1, both amorphous silica and clay minerals showed a dramatic increase in concentration and broadening in size distribution outside the exit of the barrier islands, indicative of wind-induced resuspension and subsequent advection of particles out of Mobile Bay. While collectively recognized as the PIM, amorphous silica and clay minerals, as shown in this study, possess very different size distributions. Considering how differences in PSDs and the associated particle areas will effect differences in sorption/desorption properties of these components, the results also demonstrate the potential of applying VSF-inversion in studying biogeochemistry in the estuarine-coastal ocean system.

The Wadden Sea is a shallow intertidal coastal sea, largely protected by barrier islands and fringing the North Sea coasts of Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. It is subject to influences from both the North Sea and major European rivers. Nutrient enrichment from these rivers since the 1950s has impacted the Wadden Sea ecology including loss of seagrass, increased phytoplankton blooms, and increased green macroalgae blooms. Rivers are the major source of nutrients causing Wadden Sea eutrophication. The nutrient input of the major rivers impacting the Wadden Sea reached a maximum during the 1980s and decreased at an average pace of about 2.5% per year for total Nitrogen (TN) and about 5% per year for total Phosphorus (TP), leading to decreasing nutrient levels but also increasing N/P ratios. During the past decade, the lowest nutrient inputs since 1977 were observed but these declining trends are leveling out for TP. Phytoplankton biomass (measured as chlorophyll a) in the Wadden Sea has decreased since the 1980s and presently reached a comparatively low level. In tidal inlet stations with a long-term monitoring, summer phytoplankton levels correlate with riverine TN and TP loads but stations located closer to the coast behave in a more complex manner. Regional differences are observed, with highest chlorophyll a levels in the southern Wadden Sea and lowest levels in the northern Wadden Sea. Model data support the hypothesis that the higher eutrophication levels in the southern Wadden Sea are linked to a more intense coastward accumulation of organic matter produced in the North Sea.

Regimeshifts: sprunghafte Änderungen im Funktionieren des gesamten Ökosystems. Sowohl die natürliche Variabilität hydrodynamischer und atmosphärischer Prozesse auf verschiedenen Zeitskalen als auch menschliche Einflussnahmen wie beispielsweise CO2-Ausstoß, Fischerei, Deichbau, Vertiefungen oder Eutrophierung tragen zu dieser komplexen ökologischen Dynamik bei (z. B. Emeis et al. 2015). Im 1. Klimabericht für die Metropolregion Hamburg (1. HKB; Colijn und Fanger 2011) wurde die Klimaauswirkung auf das Phyto- und Zooplankton, das Makrozoobenthos und die Fische in Nordsee, Wattenmeer und Elbeästuar dargelegt. Die Autoren zeigten, dass insbesondere die Wassertemperatur und Hydrodynamik die Variabilität der Ökosysteme prägten, während hin zum Wattenmeer und Elbeästuar die Interaktion mit anthropogenen Faktoren zunahm und vermutlich die zukünftige ökologische Entwicklung prägen wird.

Invasion trajectories of introduced alien species usually begin with a long establishment phase of low abundance, often followed by exponential expansion and subsequent adjustment phases. We review the first 26 years of feral Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas around the island of Sylt in the Wadden Sea (North Sea, NE Atlantic), and reveal causal conditions for the invasion phases. Sea-based oyster farming with repeated introductions made establishment of feral oysters almost inevitable. Beds of mussels Mytilus edulis on mud flats offered firm substrate for attachment and ideal growth conditions around low tide level. C. gigas mapped on to the spatial pattern of mussel beds. During the 1990s, cold summers often hampered recruitment and abundances remained low but oyster longevity secured persistence. Since the 2000s, summers were often warmer and recruitment more regular. Young oysters attached to adult oysters and abundances of >1000 m−2 were achieved. However, peak abundance was followed by recruitment failure. The population declined and then was also struck by ice winters causing high mortality. Recovery was fast (>2000 m−2) but then recruitment failed again. We expect adjustment phase will proceed with mean abundance of about 1000 m−2 but density-dependent (e.g., diseases) and density-independent (e.g., weather anomalies) events causing strong fluctuations. With continued global warming, feral C. gigas at the current invasion fronts in British estuaries and Scandinavian fjords may show similar adjustment trajectories as observed in the northern Wadden Sea, and also other marine introductions may follow the invasion trajectory of Pacific oysters.

Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii occurs predominantly in tropical to subtropical freshwaters but appears to be spreading to temperate regions. After the hurricanes of 2005, a bloom of this organism took place in Lake Dauterive and Lake Fausse Pointe in Louisiana. The cyanobacterium dominated the phytoplankton community for three months. Of the three known morphotypes (straight, coiled and spiral) only coiled and spiral were found. In June 2006, 60% of the organisms were of the spiral morphotype but the relative abundance of this morphotype decreased dramatically within the month of June. However, the average density for both morphotypes remained the same until September. Densities (up to 160,000 cells/mL) significantly exceeded the threshold for toxicity. Because the sampled region offers optimal light and nutrient conditions, it is likely that C. raciborskii has been established in this region and future blooms can be expected. Therefore, a monitoring program should be implemented.

During the twentieth century about 25% of the wetlands of the Mississippi delta was lost, partially a result of isolation of the river from the delta. River diversions are being implemented to reintroduce river water to the delta plain. We synthesize here the results of extensive studies on a river diversion at Caernarvon, Louisiana, one of the largest diversions in the delta.

A simple model of phytoplankton-zooplankton interaction with a periodic input nutrient is presented. The model is then used to study a nutrient-plankton interaction with a toxic substance that inhibits the growth rate of plankton populations. The effects of the toxin upon the existence, magnitude, and stability of the periodic solutions are discussed. Numerical simulations are also provided to illustrate analytical results and to compare more complicated dynamical behaviour.

Models of nutrient-plankton interaction with a toxic substance that inhibits either the growth rate of phytoplankton, zooplankton or both trophic levels are proposed and studied. For simplicity, it is assumed that both nutrient and the toxin have the same constant input and washout rate as the chemostat system. The effects of the toxin upon the existence, magnitude, and stability of the steady states are examined. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the system can have multiple attractors when the phytoplankton's nutrient uptake rate is inhibited by the toxin.
