Excited-state absorption (ESA) spectra of π-conjugated compounds are frequently calculated by (quadratic response) time-dependent density functional theory, (QR) TD-DFT, often giving a reasonable representation of the experimental results despite the (known) incomplete electronic description. To investigate whether this is inherent to the method, we calculate here the ESA spectra of small-to-medium-sized oligophenylenevinylenes (

Perylene bisimide (PBI) dyes are known as red, maroon and black pigments, whose colors depend on the close π−π stacking arrangement. However, contrary to the luminescent monomers, deep-red and black PBI pigments are commonly non- or only weakly fluorescent due to (multiple) quenching pathways. Here, we introduce N-alkoxybenzyl substituted PBIs that contain close π stacking arrangement (exhibiting dπ−π ≈ 3.5 Å, and longitudinal and transversal displacements of 3.1 Å and 1.3 Å); however, they afford deep-red emitters with solid-state fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF) of up to 60%. Systematic photophysical and computational studies in solution and in the solid state reveal a sensitive interconversion of the PBI-centred locally excited state and a charge transfer state, which depends on the dihedral angle (θ) between the benzyl and alkoxy groups. This effectively controls the emission process, and enables high ΦF by circumventing the common quenching pathways commonly observed for perylene black analogues.

Boric acid (BA) has been used as a transparent glass matrix for optical materials for over 100 years. However, recently, apparent room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from BA (crystalline and powder states) was reported (Zheng et al., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2021, 60, 9500) when irradiated at 280 nm under ambient conditions. We suspected that RTP from their BA sample was induced by an unidentified impurity. Our experimental results show that pure BA synthesized from B(OMe)\(_{3}\) does not luminesce in the solid state when irradiated at 250–400 nm, while commercial BA indeed (faintly) luminesces. Our theoretical calculations show that neither individual BA molecules nor aggregates would absorb light at >175 nm, and we observe no absorption of solid pure BA experimentally at >200 nm. Therefore, it is not possible for pure BA to be excited at >250 nm even in the solid state. Thus, pure BA does not display RTP, whereas trace impurities can induce RTP.

State-of-the-art complete active space self-consistent field/complete active space second order perturbation theory (CASPT2) calculations are used to investigate the role of double excitations on the ground state absorption (GSA) and excited state absorption (ESA) spectra of distyrylbenzene, an important prototype medium-sized π-conjugated organic compound for optoelectronics. The multi-reference results are compared with linear and quadratic response time-dependent density functional theory (DFT) results, revealing an incomplete description of the electronic transitions in the latter. Careful selection of the active space and basis set in the CASPT2 approach allows for a reliable description of the GSA and ESA features; cost-effective DFT-based geometries can be utilized without a significant loss of accuracy. Double excitations are shown to play a pivotal role already for higher excited states in the GSA spectrum, however, without a relevant impact on the discernible spectral features. In the ESA, which shows a much more complex electronic situation, the crucial importance of double (and higher) excitations in all relevant electronic transitions, indeed, mandates a multiconfigurational treatment as done in the present benchmark study.

Hypericin tautomerization that involves the migration of the labile protons is believed to be the primary photophysical process relevant to its light-activated antiviral activity. Despite the difficulty in isolating individual tautomers, it can be directly observed in single-molecule experiments. We show that the tautomerization of single hypericin molecules in free space is observed as an abrupt flipping of the image pattern accompanied with fluorescence intensity fluctuations, which are not correlated with lifetime changes. Moreover, the study can be extended to a λ/2 Fabry-Pérot microcavity. The modification of the local photonic environment by a microcavity is well simulated with a theoretical model that shows good agreement with the experimental data. Inside a microcavity, the excited state lifetime and fluorescence intensity of single hypericin molecules are correlated, and a distinct jump of the lifetime and fluorescence intensity reveals the temporal behavior of the tautomerization with high sensitivity and high temporal resolution. The observed changes are also consistent with time-dependent density functional theory calculations. Our approach paves the way to monitor and even control reactions for a wider range of molecules at the single molecule level.

Bent-shaped molecules incorporating terminal pyrene moieties were designed and synthesized aiming at promoting a variety of luminescent self-assembled materials. The novel compounds are fluorescent both in solution and in condensed phases, achieving brighter fluorescence in the last case with fluorescence quantum yields up to 60%. Depending on the number of pyrene units (1 or 2) and/or the presence or absence of a long and flexible linker between the bent-core and the pyrene structures, bent-core liquid crystal phases, physical gels and nanoassemblies were obtained. Their properties depend on the molecular design, unveiling a synergistic and versatile 'tandem' of the bi-functional system in supramolecular functional materials chemistry. Long hydrocarbon spacers connecting bent-core and pyrene structures were necessary to display mesomorphic properties, achieving monotropic rectangular columnar mesophases, being for one compound stable at room temperature and displaying a glassy transition below room temperature, as revealed by POM, DSC and XRD. Liquid crystal phases exhibited excimer-like emission. In addition, organogels were obtained without the help of hydrogen bonding functionalities, exhibiting in one case supergelator behavior. Two polymorphs with distinctly different fluorescence emission (green and yellow; G, Y) emanating from excitonic and excimeric contributions were prepared from solution as well as by using physical vapour transport. Based on crystal structure investigations, the vibrationally-resolved excitonic emission is found to originate from a β-Sheet arrangement (G), whereas a sandwich herringbone structure is responsible for the excimer emission (Y). The intermolecular interactions and energies were quantified to have a complete picture of the decisive factors that controls the self-assembly. Halogen-bond directed self-assembly was explored to fine-tune the intermolecular interactions through co-crystallization as well as a commercially viable liquid assisted grinding method. A smooth fluorescence shift from G to Y was achieved by co-assembly due to substantial differences in the π orbital overlap in the molecular packing. Our investigation provides a comprehensive understanding of the origin of excitonic and excimeric contributions of emission behaviour in conjunction with the molecular packing and π-π orbital overlap, and might provide a directive towards the engineering of fluorescent functional molecular materials.

The present work explores a rational molecular design for a multicolor switchable mechanochromic molecular system with a high fluorescence quantum yield ΦF. It is demonstrated that the reversible and high-contrast tricolor luminescence switching can be induced by combining the crystal-to-amorphous transition and unique crystal-to-crystal transition of a polymorphic α-dicyanodistyrylbenzene (α-DCS) unit. To this end, we have synthesized a luminescent molecule comprising an α-DCS core flanked with long dodecyloxy chains (DDDCS). DDDCS shows blue (B) and orange (O) fluorescent crystalline states and a green (G) fluorescent amorphous state. Very specifically, applying a shear force to the solid sample directs a fluorescence switching to the G state, while thermal annealing and solvent vapor annealing direct it to the B and O states, respectively.

Cyanoarene-based photocatalysts (PCs) have attracted significant interest owing to their superior catalytic performance for radical anion mediated photoredox catalysis. However, the factors affecting the formation and degradation of cyanoarene-based PC radical anion (PC•‒) are still insufficiently understood. Herein, we therefore investigate the formation and degradation of cyanoarene-based PC•‒ under widely-used photoredox-mediated reaction conditions. By screening various cyanoarene-based PCs, we elucidate strategies to efficiently generate PC•‒ with adequate excited-state reduction potentials (Ered*) via supra-efficient generation of long-lived triplet excited states (T1). To thoroughly investigate the behavior of PC•‒ in actual photoredox-mediated reactions, a reductive dehalogenation is carried out as a model reaction and identified the dominant photodegradation pathways of the PC•‒. Dehalogenation and photodegradation of PC•‒ are coexistent depending on the rate of electron transfer (ET) to the substrate and the photodegradation strongly depends on the electronic and steric properties of the PCs. Based on the understanding of both the formation and photodegradation of PC•‒, we demonstrate that the efficient generation of highly reducing PC•‒ allows for the highly efficient photoredox catalyzed dehalogenation of aryl/alkyl halides at a PC loading as low as 0.001 mol% with a high oxygen tolerance. The present work provides new insights into the reactions of cyanoarene-based PC•‒ in photoredox-mediated reactions.

Tautomerization is a fast chemical reaction where structures of the reactants differ only in the position of a proton and a double bond. Tautomerization often occurs in natural substances and is a fundamental process in organic- and biochemistry. However, studying the optical properties of tautomeric species is challenging due to ensemble averaging. Many molecules, such as porphines, porphycenes or phenanthroperylene quinones, exhibit a reorientation of the transition dipole moment (TDM) during tautomerization, which can be directly observed in a single molecule experiment. A prominent phenanthroperylene quinone is hypericin showing antiviral, antidepressive, and photodynamical properties. Here, we study single hypericin molecules by using confocal microscopy combined with higher order laser modes. Observing abrupt flipping of the image pattern allows to draw conclusions about the coexistence of different tautomers and their conversion path. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations show that hypericin is cycling between the four most stable tautomers. This approach allows to unambiguously assign a TDM orientation to a specific tautomer and enables to determine the chemical structure in situ. Additionally, tautomerization can not only be observed by the image pattern orientation, but also as intermittency in the fluorescence emission of a single molecule. Time correlated single photon counting enables to determine the excited state lifetimes of the hypericin tautomers. Our approach is not only limited to hypericin, but can be applied to other molecules showing a TDM reorientation during tautomerization, helping to get a deeper understanding of this important process.

Dual emission materials have found much interest in the past years for materials and life science applications; however, a systematic overview on the underlying processes is missing by now. This is done herein, classifying dual emission (DE) phenomena, relying either on one emitter with two emitting states (DE1), two independent emitters (DE2), or two correlated emitters (DE3). Relevant DE mechanisms for materials science are then briefly described, giving the electronic and/or geometrical conditions under which they occur; for further reading, reference to reviews and textbooks is given, which offer detailed insight into the complex mechanistic aspects of the various DE processes, provide overviews on materials' families, or their applications. Avoiding ambiguities and misinterpretations, this systematic, insightful tutorial review might inspire future targeted design of DE materials.

A data survey on experimental fluorescence quantum yields of (multi)substituted dicyano-distyrylbenzenes in fluid solution evidences that non-radiative decay increases with the Franck-Condon energy (E-FC), being opposite to the conventional energy gap law. Quantum-chemistry indicates that this is controlled by access to the conical intersection (CI) following the Bell-Evans-Polanyi principle as a first-step approximation for this family of molecules; the variations in E-FC among the different compounds are found to be decisive, while those of E-CI are estimated to be weaker or even enhancing the effect. The current findings may have significant consequences for the design of molecules for organic solid state emitters.

Several theoretical studies have proposed strategies to reach helical molecular orbitals (Hel-MOs) in [n]cumulenes. While chiral even-[n] cumulenes feature Hel-MOs, odd-[n] cumulenes may also present them if the terminal groups lie on different planes. However, the hitherto proposed systems have been either experimentally unfeasible or resulted in opposite pseudo-degenerated Hel-MOs, impeding their use in real applicatons. To overcome this challenge, we hereby demonstrate the introduction of a remarkable energy difference between helical orbitals of opposite twist by fixing the torsion angle between the terminal groups in butadiyne fragments. In order to experimentally lock the conformation of the terminal groups, we designed cyclic architectures by combining acetylenes with chiral spirobifluorenes. A straightforward synthetic strategy along with the high stability allowed the isolation and full characterization of systems presenting distinct helical orbitals. Finally, a thorough computational analysis revealed that the most significant optical responses of these systems originate mainly from the exciton coupling between the featured diphenylbutadiyne fragments. This novel strategy opens now access to the development of systems with distinct helical molecular orbitals suitable for their implementation into chiroptical and optoelectronic applications.

Organocatalysed photoredox-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (O-ATRP) is a very promising polymerization method as it eliminates concerns associated with transition-metal contamination of polymer products. However, reducing the amount of catalyst and expanding the monomer scope remain major challenges in O-ATRP. Herein, we report a systematic computer-aided-design strategy to identify powerful visible-light photoredox catalysts for O-ATRP. One of our discovered organic photoredox catalysts controls the polymerization of methyl methacrylate at sub-ppm catalyst loadings (0.5 ppm—a very meaningful amount enabling the direct use of polymers without a catalyst removal process); that is, 100–1,000 times lower loadings than other organic photoredox catalysts reported so far. Another organic photoredox catalyst with supra-reducing power in an excited state and high redox stability facilitates the challenging polymerization of the non-acrylic monomer styrene, which is not successful using existing photoredox catalysts. This work provides access to diverse challenging organic/polymer syntheses and makes O-ATRP viable for many industrial and biomedical applications. Organocatalysed photoredox-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization is a very promising method, although many challenges still lie ahead. Now, Kwon, Gierschner, Kim and co-workers present a computer-aided-design strategy to identify organic photoredox catalysts for this process. The success of the design strategy is demonstrated by polymerizations of methyl methacrylate and styrene.

Solid state luminescence enhancement (SLE) of conjugated organic materials has had a great impact in materials science, but a deep understanding has been rather limited to date. Here, we investigate a prototype example of SLE materials, cyano-substituted distyrylbenzene (DCS), by varying systematically and subtly the substitution pattern (inter alia of the position of the cyano-substituent) to give largely different photoresponse in fluid and solid solution as well in the crystalline state. The combination of quantitative (ultra)fast optical spectroscopic techniques, appropriate quantum-chemical methods, and structural (X-ray) data allows us to elucidate and rationalize all details of the SLE process, including steric versus electronic factors, radiative versus nonradiative decay channels, and intra- versus intermolecular contributions, providing a first holistic picture of SLE.

For this, different DFT functionals were tested for geometry optimization and the TD part to calculate the neutral and different protonated species in a fast screening approach, i. e. using single point calculations in an implicit solvent. Offset-corrected M06HF, hitherto only applied to polymers, was identified as a suitable method to reproduce the absorption spectra in a reasonable fashion for all different substitution pattern and all different protonated species at different pH values; moreover, the method properly predicts the energetic ordering of low-lying n-π* and ππ* transitions, which is decisive for the non-/emissive nature of the different compounds. Research on solvent-free acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) has tremendously grown over the last few decades due to the stringent regulations to control volatile organic compound emissions. They are mostly prepared in the presence of photoinitiators using high-energy UV light that causes several issues such as those associated with radiation safety. Herein, for the first time, solvent-free acrylic PSAs were prepared through visible-light-driven photocatalytic free radical polymerization. Importantly, we found that the use of N-vinyl-based monomers noticeably enhances the rate and conversion of polymerizations, thereby eliminating the need for additives (e.g. α-haloester and sacrificial electron donor) that are usually required for photoredox-mediated free radical polymerization, but concurrently needs an additional purification process to remove residues. Combined experiments and quantum chemical calculations suggest that N-vinyl-based monomers facilitate electron transfer between monomers and photocatalysts, which is responsible for the enhanced rate and converison of polymerization. Viscoelasticity, mechanical strength and adhesion performance of acrylic PSAs were well adjusted in a broad range by controlling the monomer composition, suggesting that our new method would replace the existing photoinitiated free radical polymerization.

Solid-state luminescent materials that are sensitive to external stimuli are of enormous importance due to their potential for application as smart responsive materials and devices. Here we report the changes in the photophysical properties of a novel benzimidazole-based chromophore upon the formation of an inclusion complex with DMSO molecules in the solid state, and the vapochromic properties of the co-assembly are explored. The chromophore is synthesised in a single step with a good yield. The compound is reasonably emissive in solution, however, it exhibits a red shift and quenching of emission in the solid state. Co-assembly with DMSO results in two distinctly emissive forms, with emission in the yellow (Y-form) and orange (O-form) regions of the visible spectrum. An enhanced emission is observed in the Y-form, while the O-form exhibits efficiency similar to the pristine solid. Various factors that stabilize the co-assembly and the basis of fluorescence enhancement are studied and substantiated by DFT investigations in a QM:MM framework. The crystalline co-assemblies can be reverted to a structure similar to the pristine form by vapours of polar protic solvents, which dramatically modify their photophysical properties. The new materials are therefore promising as vapochromic sensors for environmental monitoring.

Polymorphs of organic semiconductors are of great interest as they shed light to structure-property relationships. The full X-ray thin film structure analysis of two polymorphs (B, G) of an important n-type semiconducting dicyano-distyrylbenzene based small molecule (CN-TFPA) is reported. Drastically different structures of the monotropic phases are revealed, that is an uncommon 2D crossed π-stacked arrangement for the B-phase versus a 1D slipped π-stack for G. Both phases exhibit a layered structure in the (100) plane with high structural integrity, driven by the hydrophobic contacts of the terminal CF3 groups; as (100) coincides with the film surface, this allows for exfoliation by scotch tape. An in-depth time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) based quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) study reveals all subsequent significantly differing optical and electronic responses which result from the different arrangements: the B film shows little excitonic interaction with strong blue fluorescence, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), and good 2D n-type transport. The G film forms H-aggregates with strong green fluorescence, no ASE, and 1D n-type charge transport. The established structure-property relationships are seen as a crucial step for computer-aided device analysis.

Resonant energy transfer (RET) is a key mechanism in organic optoelectronic devices, and its efficiency depends critically on the intermolecular arrangement of the active compounds. Supramolecular organization promoted by nanostructured supramolecular host–guest compounds (HGCs) is an elegant way of controlling the packing of the molecules inserted in optically inert organic or inorganic host materials. Under ideal conditions (i.e., dye properties and homogeneous distribution) very high exciton diffusion rates are expected in zeolite L HGCs, being of high relevance for practical applications. From experiment, however, there is clear evidence for inhomogeneity dependent on the type of chromophore, the preparation procedure, and the size of host crystals, but the reason for inhomogeneity and the consequences on exciton diffusion are under debate. In the framework of optoelectronic luminescent materials, non-radiative decay mechanisms are relevant to interpret efficiency losses. These radiationless processes are herein studied theoretically for a series of stilbenoid derivatives, including distyrylbenzene (DSB) and cyano-substituted distyrylbenzene (DCS) molecules in vacuo. Given the difficulties of excited-state reaction path determinations, a simplified computational strategy is defined based on the exploration of the potential energy surfaces (PES) along the elongation, twisting, and pyramidalization of the vinyl bonds. For such exploration, density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent (TD)DFT, and complete-active-space self-consistent field/complete-active-space second-order perturbation theory (CASSCF/CASPT2) are combined. The strategy is firstly benchmarked for ethene, styrene, and stilbene; next it is applied to DSB and representative DCS molecules. Two energy descriptors are derived from the approximated PES, the Franck-Condon energy and the energy gap at the elongated, twisted, and pyramidalized structures. These energy descriptors correlate fairly well with the non-radiative decay rates, which validates our computational strategy. Ultimately, this strategy may be applied to predict the luminescence behavior in related compounds.

Synthesis, processing, and characterization are reported for a series of tetracyanoplatinate Magnus' salt (TCN-MS) derivatives-soluble derivatives of the generally intractable Magnus' green salt-that feature the general structure [Pt(NH2R)(4)] [Pt(CN)(4)] where R is a branched alkyl group or a w-phenylalkyl group. In solutions, these coordination compounds generally dissolve on the level of individual ion pairs as shown by X-ray diffraction analysis. To enable the formation of quasi-one-dimensional linear stacks of Pt(II) atoms in thin films, the matrix-assisted assembly is employed, whereby the compounds are codissolved with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), followed by film casting, thermally activated assembly, and eventual removal of PEO. Remarkably, assembled TCN-MS inorganic polymers exhibit bright blue-green photoluminescence. A detailed investigation of the assembly process and simultaneously modified solid-state optical properties is performed using a range of microscopy, optical and vibrational spectroscopy, and thermal analysis techniques. The addition of chemical additives is considered as a promising approach for obtaining high-quality perovskite films under mild conditions, which is essential for both the efficiency and the stability of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PeSCs). Although such additive engineering yields high-quality films, the inherent insulating property of the chemical additives prevents the efficient transport and extraction of charge carriers, thereby limiting the applicability of this approach. Here, it is shown that organic conjugated molecules having rhodanine moieties (i.e., SA-1 and SA-2) can be used as semiconducting chemical additives that simultaneously yield large-sized perovskite grains and improve the charge extraction. Using this strategy, a high power conversion efficiency of 20.3% as well as significantly improved long-term stability under humid air conditions is achieved. It is believed that this approach can provide a new pathway to designing chemical additives for further improving the efficiency and stability of PeSCs.

This allows for a detailed and accurate comparison on the consistency of DFT methods for chainlength evolution and polymer limit prediction, and for an understanding of geometry and time-dependent contributions to Evert by combinatorial analysis. Together with former studies on wide/medium bandgap polymers and low bandgap co-polymers, our results on low bandgap homopolymers suggest offset-corrected M06HF as the most viable method for time inexpensive and reliable prediction of semiconducting polymers at the moment. Intermolecular interactions are decisive in controlling optoelectronic properties of molecular materials. Polymorphism in one and the same material gives a unique opportunity to gain a direct insight into the intermolecular contributions. Here, stimulated emission properties in two polymorphs of a dicyanodistyrylbenzene derivative with multiple trifluoromethyl groups in the terminal rings are investigated, and are correlated to the intermolecular arrangement and resulting excitonic coupling. The polymorphs have distinctly different emission behavior with one emitting in the blue, while the other emits in the green. Only the blue polymorph exhibits light amplification with an apparent threshold of spectral narrowing about 100 μJ cm−2. The green polymorph fails to exhibit any gain even at two orders of magnitude higher excitation fluence. Pump–probe studies indicate a more extended excited state absorption toward the emission region in the green polymorph compared to the blue, allowing net gain only on a subpicosecond (ps) time scale, too short for the observation of amplified spontaneous emission. This is attributed to intermolecular breathing/shearing modes coupled to the electronic transition due to strong π–π overlap in the green polymorph. These observations emphasize the significance of intermolecular interactions in controlling the optical properties as well as light amplification processes in organic conjugated materials.

Metal-free organic phosphors can be an attractive smart optical sensing materials since, in such compounds, intersystem crossing (ISC) and the phosphorescence process are placed in subtle competition with fluorescence, internal conversion (IC), and non-radiative decay pathways. Here, we report a unique environment-dependent multi-luminescence switching behavior of metal-free organic phosphorescent materials. Through combined photophysical measurements and computational electronic structure analysis, we systematically investigated how physicochemical properties of organic solvents affect the photophysical pathways of the metal-free organic phosphors. By rationally adapting the finding into phosphor-doped electrospun polymer fibers, we developed a new luminometric sensory platform and achieved selective detection of eight different common organic solvents. The presented finding provides new possibilities for metal-free organic phosphors to be a novel class of smart optical sensory materials.

A set of triads in which o- and m-carborane clusters are bonded to two stilbene units through Ccluster -CH2 bonds was synthesized, and their structures were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. A study on the influence of the o- and m- isomers on the absorption and photoluminescence properties of the stilbene units in solution revealed no charge-transfer contributions in the lowest excited state, as confirmed by (TD)DFT calculations. The presence of one or two B-I groups in m-carborane derivatives does not affect the emission properties of the stilbenes in solution, probably due to the rather large distance between the iodo substituents and the fluorophore. Nevertheless, a significant redshift of the photoluminescence (PL) emission maximum in the solid state (thin films and powder samples) compared to solution was observed; this can be traced back to PL sensitization, most probably due to more densely packed stilbene moieties. Remarkably, the PL absolute quantum yields of powder samples are significantly higher than those in solution, and this was attributed to the restricted environment and the aforementioned sensitization. Thus, the bonding of the carborane clusters to two stilbene units preserves their PL behavior in solution, but produces significant changes in the solid state. Furthermore, iodinated species can be considered to be promising precursors for theranostic agents in which both imaging and therapeutic functions could possibly be combined.

Combined structural, photophysical, and quantum-chemical studies at the quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) level precisely reveal the structure-property relationships in a mixed-stack donor-acceptor cocrystal, which displays vibronically structured fluorescence, strongly red-shifted against the spectra of the parent donor and acceptor, with high quantum yield despite the pronounced CT character of the emitting state. The study elucidates the reasons for this unusual combination, quantifies the ordering and nature of the collective excited singlet and triplet state manifold, and details the deactivation pathways of the initially created Franck-Condon state.

Water-soluble, highly fluorescent host–guest chromophore-cucurbit[8]uril supramolecular polymer bundles are investigated by polarized time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, structural methods, and quantum chemistry to fully reveal structural organization and heterogeneity but, in particular, energy-transfer dynamics, being of crucial importance for the design of supramolecular artificial light-harvesting systems.

Solution-processable all-small-molecule organic solar cells (OSCs) have shown dramatic progress in improving stability and photovoltaic efficiency. However, knowledge of photoexcitation dynamics in this novel class of materials is very limited. To fully exploit the design capacities inherent in small molecule chemistry, the elementary processes and branching yields must be known in detail. Here, we present a combined computational–experimental study of photoexcitation dynamics of a prototypical all-small-molecule photovoltaic blend, p-DTS(FBTTh2)2 as a donor and NIDCS-MO as an acceptor. Femtosecond spectroscopy data show that excitonic coupling is small and that the charge transfer states are localized, at first glance contradicting the high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) and open circuit voltage (VOC) of this material. A target analysis of the femtosecond spectra yields exciton dissociation rates of 1/(25 ps) and 1/(100 ps) for the as-deposited and annealed blend, respectively. These rates are far slower than in typical polymer based organic solar cells. Still, internal quantum yields are high because parasitic quenching processes are found to be even slower. In the framework of semiclassical Marcus theory, we demonstrate that our system shows near-optimum energy conversion and charge separation yields, due to negligible activation energy for charge generation but high activation energy for charge recombination, allowing enough time to separate localized charge transfer states. We thus justify both the high internal quantum yields and the high open circuit voltage found in this system. Finally, we predict that highly efficient and stable low-optical bandgap systems can be realized by reducing the electronic coupling between the donor and acceptor.
