Lake Tzibaná is one of the largest (1.27 km2) and deepest (Zmax = 52 m) karstic lakes in the UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserve “Nahá-Metzabok” and in the Lacandon Forest, southeastern Mexico. It archives sediments from multiple sources and the inflowing Nahá River forms deltaic deposits. In 2019, the water level in Lake Tzibaná declined by ~ 15 m, persisting for 4 months and exposing the Nahá River Delta. A geophysical profile on the exposed delta revealed an accumulation of ~ 20 m of such deposits. Three sediment outcrops from an inactive channel in the Nahá River Delta, which ranged in height from 0.6 to 1.43 m, were sampled and a multi-proxy analysis of biological remains and geochemical variables was conducted. Four facies were observed: (1) massive-coarse sand, (2) fine sand, (3) dark leaf litter and (4) massive silty clay, each characterized by specific microcrustacean, testate amoebae and diatom taxa. Six dark leaf litter horizons were radiocarbon dated and revealed a complex depositional history including inverted ages making the establishment of an age model difficult. Nevertheless, past lake-level changes and the formation of the four facies match three characteristic water-level stages, which can also be observed on recent satellite images: (1) Massive-coarse sand deposits, with compositional and sedimentological characteristics of a shoreline environment and fluvial lateral banks, were formed during large-magnitude reductions in the lake level, similar to the one in 2019, (2) Interbedded layers of fine sand and dark leaf litter, currently found in low-energy fluvial environments, were formed during shorter and less pronounced decrease intervals, and (3) Massive silty clay, with distinctive microorganisms from low-energy lacustrine environments, is deposited during high water-level stages, when the delta is covered by water. Our findings illustrate how hydrological changes alter sedimentary dynamics in deltaic areas of lakes. Despite the complexity of their depositional processes, deltaic records can serve as a complementary source of paleolimnological information to records from distal zones due to their sensitivity to variations in water level, especially during extreme and prolonged desiccation events. Future research should attempt to combine evidences from deltaic and sediment sequences from deeper zones of Lake Tzibaná to reconstruct water-level variations during the entire Holocene. Understanding past lake-level reductions is not only relevant for the local indigenous communities but also crucial for the conservation of this ecosystem of international importance.

Ongoing global warming intensifies the degradation of mountainous permafrost. Permafrost thawing impacts landform evolution, reduces fresh water resources, enhances the potential of natural hazards, and thus has significant socio-economic impact. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) has been widely used to map the ice-containing permafrost by its resistivity contrast compared to the surrounding non-frozen medium. This study aims to reveal the effects of ongoing climate warming on alpine permafrost by repeating historical ERT and analysing the temporal changes in the resistivity distribution. In order to facilitate the measurements, we introduce and discuss the employment of textile electrodes. These newly developed electrodes significantly reduce working effort, are easy to deploy on blocky surfaces, and yield sufficiently low contact resistances. We analyse permafrost evolution on three periglacial landforms (two rock glaciers and one talus slope) in the Swiss and Austrian Alps by repeating historical surveys after periods of 10, 12, and 16 years, respectively. The resistivity values have been significantly reduced in ice-poor permafrost landforms at all study sites. Interestingly, resistivity values related to ice-rich permafrost in the studied active rock glacier partly increased during the studied time period. To explain this apparently counterintuitive (in view of increased resistivity) observation, geomorphological circumstances such as the relief and increased creeping velocity of the active rock glacier, are discussed by using additional remote sensing data. The present study highlights ice-poor permafrost degradation in the Alps resulting from ever-accelerating global warming.

Permafrost as a climate-sensitive parameter, its occurrence and distribution plays an important role in the observation of global warming. However, field-based permafrost distribution data and information on the subsurface ice content at the large area of the southern mountainous Tibetan Plateau (TP) is very sparse. Existing models based on boreholes and remote sensing approaches suggest permafrost probabilities for most of the Tibetan mountain ranges. Field data to validate permafrost models are generally lacking because access of the mountain regions in extreme altitudes is limited. The study provides geomorphological and geophysical field data from a north-orientated high-altitude catchment in the western Nyainqentanglha Range. Our multi-method-approach combines (A) geomorphological mapping data, (B) subsurface ice-occurrence derived from electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) data, and (C) multi-annual displacement rates from Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) analysis to assess the lower occurrence of the probable permafrost around 5400 m a.s.l. in the Qugaqie basin. Periglacial landforms such as rockglaciers and protalus ramparts are located in the periglacial zone from 5300–5600 a.s.l. The altitudinal periglacial landform distribution is supported by ERT data detecting ice-rich permafrost in a rockglacier at 5500 m a.s.l. and ice lenses around the rockglacier (5450 m a.s.l.). The highest, multiannual displacement rates up to 150 mm/y are observed typically on these rockglaciers. However, seasonality of rockglacier surface displacement like in other high mountain areas is missing. This study closes the gap of unknown state of periglacial features and potential permafrost occurrence in a high-elevated basin at the western Nyainqentanglha Range (Tibetan Plateau) and suppose – compared to other high mountain regions – a higher-elevated permafrost occurrence.

Geoelectrical methods are widely used for permafrost investigations by research groups, government agencies and industry. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) surveys are typically performed only once to detect the presence or absence of permafrost. Exchange of data and expertise among users is limited and usually occurs bilaterally. Neither complete information about the existence of geophysical surveys on permafrost nor the data itself is available on a global scale. Given the potential gain for identifying permafrost evidence and their spatio-temporal changes, there is a strong need for coordinated efforts regarding data, metadata, guidelines, and expertise exchange. Repetition of ERT surveys is rare, even though it could provide a quantitative spatio-temporal measure of permafrost evolution, helping to quantify the effects of climate change at local (where the ERT survey takes place) and global scales (due to the inventory).Our International Permafrost Association (IPA) action group (2021-2023) has the main objective of bringing together the international community interested in geoelectrical measurements on permafrost and laying the foundations for an operational International Database of Geoelectrical Surveys on Permafrost (IDGSP). Our contribution presents a new international database of electrical resistivity datasets on permafrost. The core members of our action group represent more than 10 research groups, who have already contributed their own metadata (currently > 200 profiles covering 15 countries). These metadata will be fully publicly accessible in the near future whereas access to the resistivity data may be either public or restricted. Thanks to this open-access policy, we aim at increasing the level of transparency, encouraging further data providers and fostering survey repetitions by new users.The database is set up on a virtual machine hosted by the University of Fribourg. The advanced open-source relational database system PostgreSQL is used to program the database. Homogenization and standardization of a large number of data and metadata are among the greatest challenges, yet are essential to a structured relational database. In this contribution, we present the structure of the database, statistics of the metadata uploaded, as well as first results of repetitions from legacy geoelectrical measurements on permafrost. Guidelines and strategies are developed to handle repetition challenges such as changing survey configuration, changing geometry or inaccurate/missing metadata. First steps toward transparent and reproducible automated filtering and inversion of a great number of datasets will also be presented. By archiving geoelectrical data on permafrost, the ambition of this project is the reanalysis of the full database and its climatic interpretation.

Climate change and the associated rise in air temperature have affected the Tibetan Plateau to a significantly stronger degree than the global average over the past decades. This has caused deglaciation, increased precipitation and permafrost degradation. The latter in particular is associated with increased slope instability and an increase in mass-wasting processes, which pose a danger to infrastructure in the vicinity. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) analysis is well suited to study the displacement patterns driven by permafrost processes, as they are on the order of millimeters to decimeters. The Nyainqêntanglha range on the Tibetan Plateau lacks high vegetation and features relatively thin snow cover in winter, allowing for continuous monitoring of those displacements throughout the year. The short revisit time of the Sentinel-1 constellation further reduces the risk of temporal decorrelation, making it possible to produce surface displacement models with good spatial coverage. We created three different surface displacement models to study heave and subsidence in the valleys, seasonally accelerated sliding and linear creep on the slopes. Flat regions at Nam Co are mostly stable on a multiannual scale but some experience subsidence. We observe a clear cycle of heave and subsidence in the valleys, where freezing of the active layer followed by subsequent thawing cause a vertical oscillation of the ground of up to a few centimeters, especially near streams and other water bodies. Most slopes of the area are unstable, with velocities of 8 to 17 mm yr−1. During the summer months surface displacement velocities more than double on most unstable slopes due to freeze–thaw processes driven by higher temperatures and increased precipitation. Specific landforms, most of which have been identified as rock glaciers, protalus ramparts or frozen moraines, reach velocities of up to 18 cm yr−1. Their movement shows little seasonal variation but a linear pattern indicating that their displacement is predominantly gravity-driven.

Rock glaciers are receiving increased attention as a potential source of water and indicator of climate change in periglacial landscapes. They consist of an ice‐debris mixture, which creeps downslope. Although rock glaciers are a wide‐spread feature on the Tibetan Plateau, characteristics such as its ice fraction are unknown as a superficial debris layer inhibits remote assessments. We investigate one rock glacier in the semiarid western Nyainqêntanglha range (WNR) with a multi‐method approach, which combines geophysical, geological and geomorphological field investigations with remote sensing techniques. Long‐term kinematics of the rock glacier are detected by 4‐year InSAR time series analysis. The ice content and the active layer are examined by electrical resistivity tomography, ground penetrating radar, and environmental seismology. Short‐term activity (11‐days) is captured by a seismic network. Clast analysis shows a sorting of the rock glacier's debris. The rock glacier has three zones, which are defined by the following characteristics: (a) Two predominant lithology types are preserved separately in the superficial debris patterns, (b) heterogeneous kinematics and seismic activity, and (c) distinct ice fractions. Conceptually, the studied rock glacier is discussed as an endmember of the glacier—debris‐covered glacier—rock glacier continuum. This, in turn, can be linked to its location on the semiarid lee‐side of the mountain range against the Indian summer monsoon. Geologically preconditioned and glacially overprinted, the studied rock glacier is suggested to be a recurring example for similar rock glaciers in the WNR. This study highlights how geology, topography and climate influence rock glacier characteristics and development., Plain Language Summary: Climate change has begun to impact all regions of our planet. In cold regions, such as high‐mountain areas, rising temperatures lead to massive melting of glaciers. Besides this evident loss of ice, permafrost, a long‐term ice resource hidden in the subsurface, has started to thaw. Rock glaciers as visible permafrost‐related landforms consist of an ice‐debris mixture, which makes them creep downslope. Due to this movement and their recognizable shape, rock glaciers are permafrost indicators in high‐mountain areas. We investigate one rock glacier in the western Nyaingêntanglha Range (Tibetan Plateau) using field and remote sensing methods to understand its development and to know the current state of its ice core. Our main outcome is, that the heterogeneous creeping behavior, the properties of the debris cover as well as the internal distribution of ice are the results of a continuous development from a glacier into today's rock glacier. In particular, the high ice content in particular sections points to such a glacial precondition. The debris layer covering the internal ice attenuates the effect of climate warming. This makes the rock glacier and similar rock glaciers found in the northern part of the mountain range important future water resources for the semiarid region., Key Points: Geophysical and remote sensing methods in concert reveal the morphostructure, ice fraction, and kinematics of the studied rock glacier. The western Nyainqêntanglha Range on the Tibetan Plateau reaches an elevation of 7,162 m and is characterized by an extensive periglacial environment under semi-arid climatic conditions. Rock glaciers play an important part of the water budget in high mountain areas and recent studies suggest that they may even act as climate-resistant water storages. In this study we present the first rock glacier inventory of this region containing 1,433 rock glaciers over an area of 4,622 km. To create the most reliable inventory we combine manually created rock glacier outlines with an automated classification approach. The manual outlines were generated based on surface elevation data, optical satellite imagery and a surface velocity estimation. This estimation was generated via InSAR time series analysis with Sentinel-1 data from 2016 to 2019. Our pixel-based automated classification was able to correctly identify 87.8% of all rock glaciers in the study area at a true positive rate of 69.5%. In total, 65.9% of rock glaciers are classified as transitional with surface velocities of 1–10 cm/yr. In total, 18.5% are classified as active with higher velocities of up to 87 cm/yr. The southern windward side of the mountain range contains more numerous and more active rock glaciers. We attribute this to higher moisture availability supplied by the Indian Monsoon.

The western Nyainqêntanglha Range on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) reaches an elevation of 7162 m and is characterized by an extensive periglacial environment. Here, we present the first rock glacier inventory of the central TP containing 1433 rock glaciers over an area of 4622 km². The rock glaciers are identified based on their surface velocity. The surface velocity is derived from Sentinel-1 satellite data of 2016 to 2019 via InSAR time series analysis. 16.4 % of the inventoried rock glaciers are classified as active with a surface velocity above 10 cmyr-1 and 80.0 % are classified as transitional with 1 to 10 cmyr-1. The western Nyainqêntanglha Range forms a climate divide between the dry continental climate brought by the Westerlies from the north-west and the Indian Summer Monsoon to the south. 89.7 % of all active rock glaciers and 74 % of the free ice glacial area are located on the southern side. The higher moisture availability on the southern (windward) side of the mountain range is likely the cause of a higher rock glacier occurrence and the greater activity.Manually identifying and outlining rock glaciers is time consuming and subjective. To ensure a high reliability and comparability of our inventory, we therefore combined a manual approach with an automated classification. Three analysts worked in tandem to generate the manual outlines according to the guidelines of the IPA action group on ‘Rock glacier inventories and kinematics’. A subset of these outlines acted as training areas for a pixel-based maximum likelihood classification. Both the manual and the automated classification were performed based on DEM parameters (elevation, slope etc.), optical datasets (Sentinel-2 and NDVI) and surface velocity (generated with InSAR). 87.8 % of all manually outlined rock glaciers were identified successfully at a true positive rate of 69.5 %. 18 additional rock glaciers were added to the inventory based on the automated classification. This combined approach is therefore beneficial to generate a complete inventory. The automated classification can, however, not replace the expertise of an analyst as it greatly overestimates the actual rock glacier area.

The present geophysical study was motivated by the need to determine suitable coring locations for paleolimnological studies in two karst lakes (Metzabok and Tzibaná) of the Lacandon Forest in Chiapas, southern Mexico. We used seismic and transient electromagnetic methods to map the sediment thickness below the lake floor. When lakes were filled in March 2018, we collected seismic data with a sub-bottom profiler (SBP) and transient electromagnetic (TEM) data with a floating single-loop configuration. The latter aimed at assessing the TEM method as an alternative to seismic methods for the investigation of lake sediments and geology. After the first campaign, water levels of both studied lakes dropped dramatically by July 2019, leaving Lake Metzabok (maximum depth ~ 25 m) dry and Lake Tzibaná (~ 70 m) with a water level decreased by approx. 30 m. After the sudden drainage of the lakes, we complemented water-borne measurements by a survey carried out on the exposed lake floor in October 2019, when lake levels were still low. During this second campaign, we collected time-domain induced polarization (TDIP), and seismic refraction tomography (SRT) data on the desiccated bed of Lake Metzabok and some dry parts of Lake Tzibaná. By comparing the various data sets, we find that (i) SBP and TDIP phase images consistently resolve the thickness of the fine-grained lacustrine sediments covering the lake floor, (ii) TEM and TDIP resistivity images consistently detect the upper limit of the limestone bedrock and the geometry of fluvial deposits of a river delta, and (iii) TDIP and SRT images suggest the existence of a layer that separates the lacustrine sediments from the limestone bedrock and consists of collapse debris mixed with lacustrine sediments. While our results do not imply that resistivity-based methods could generally replace seismic reflection surveys for lake-bottom reconnaissance, they clearly show that TEM and TDIP surveys can provide important complementary information and resolve additional geological units or bedrock heterogeneities.

The aquifers on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) constitute as origin for major river systems, which are supplying millions of people all over Asia. Increasing population and tourism activities leading to larger water consumption. Hence, water supply is getting increasingly important. The TP is a sensitive system and is noticeable reacting climate change. Past decades are marked with, increasing trends of precipitation, melting of glaciers and degradation of permafrost and have generally lead to rising water levels in lakes on the TP. To ensure future water supply, aquifer characterisation and future prognosis on groundwater behavior are therefore necessary. However, due to the remote character of the TP, knowledge according to hydrogeological parameter is scarce. The aim of this study is therefore to estimate a range for aquifer parameter based on geophysical methods. The Zhagu basin, situated in the Nam Co Lake basin (second largest lake on the TP), is used as a case study. This project is part of the International Research Training Group “Geoecosystems in transition on the Tibetan Plateau” (TransTiP), funded by the DFG.During several field work campaign in July 2018, May 2019 and September 2019 disturbed sediment samples were taken and were analyzed for grain size distribution. Selected sediment layer in the laboratory were tested. Outcome of this analysis is the porosity for each selected sediment layer. Another measurement during field work has been conducted, namely electrical resistivity tomography measurements (ERT). To get better approximation of porosity and sediment characteristics, Archie’s Law is used as model to estimate those properties and later on to compare it to field and laboratory results. Two approaches are implemented (i) calculates the bulk resistivity based on known porosity from the laboratory and known conductivity of pore water measured during field work (ii) calculates the porosity with known conductivity of pore water and the bulk conductivity. For analysis saturated sediment layers were chosen.The investigation shows that both approaches are largely applicable and leading to almost same results and trends of each sediment layer. The best percentage deviation of the modeled bulk resistivity results to the measurement in the field could be achieved by position D11 which is situated near the Nam Co Lake showing a deviation of around 7%. Inside the catchment the percentage deviation is largely increasing. However, the application of Archie’s Law in combination with field and laboratory measurements allows to construct a porosity ranges for future groundwater flow calibration. In addition, the results emphasising the zonation of the subsurface in (un)saturated zones due to the small amount of resistivity.Sediment profiles, ERT measurements, observations, interpretation and conclusion including the comparison of simulated resistivity and simulated porosity to field resistivity and porosity based on laboratory analysis will be shown and discussed in the contribution.

Rock glaciers are typically regarded as periglacial features and their dynamics are supposed to be driven by ice content. Under ongoing global warming we expect these structures and dynamics to change and at least decay. This would be especially the case of rock glaciers in climate-sensitive high mountains of the Tibetan plateau, like in the Nyainqêntanglha range. Despite the similar past and present periglacial climatic conditions in this region, rock glaciers are only formed in a few, specific valleys. With this study, we aim to provide insights into the environmental conditions under which rock glaciers are formed and maintained, to be able to better understand how they will respond to changing boundary conditions, imposed by global warming.To assess “what makes a rock glacier?” we studied such a feature in the Qugaqie basin, at 5500 m a.s.l. To describe the structure and the dynamics of this active rock glacier we applied several methods (geomorphological mapping, geophysics, remote sensing) and we incorporated catchment area properties such as geology, water and sediment sources. Mapping of the geomorphology, the geology and surface material properties characterizes the external structure of the rock glacier. The internal structure, like the active layer zone and the existence of ice, is described by electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). To investigate the surface dynamics of the rock glaciers, we quantify displacement rates using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) time-series analysis. To gain insight to internal deformation dynamics we use environmental seismology, allowing for detection and location of crack signals within the rock glacier. The seismic network also allows tracking rock falls at the head scarp and continuously monitoring glaciofluvial patterns. We find that the singularity of the presence of the studied rock glacier is most likely related to a specific melange of the geological structures, former glaciation of the valley, catchment size and shape and especially water availability.

Geophysical methods provide a powerful tool to understand the internal structure of active rock glaciers. We applied Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) to a rock glacier at an elevation of 5500 m a.s.l. in the semi-arid Nyainqêntanglha mountain range on the Tibetan plateau, China. The investigations comprised three transects across the rock glacier and its catchment, each spanning over a distance of 296 m up to 396 m, equipped with 75 up to 100 electrodes respectively. Our measurements were successful in revealing internal structures of the rock glacier, but were also accompanied by challenges.We successfully detected first-order permafrost structures, such as a shallow about 4 m thick active layer of low electrical resistivity values that was underlain by potentially ice rich zones of high resistivity. Further high-resistivity zones were found and interpreted as dense bed rock of adjacent slopes that undergird the loose rock glacier debris.Challenges, we faced in the application of ERT, were mainly posed by the morphology and internal structure of the rock glacier itself. Coarse debris created a rough surface that prevented a uniform setup with accurate 4 m spacing. The presence of loosely nested blocks of pebble size up to boulders with large interspaces resulted in high contact resistances. The consequent low injection current densities and possible noisy voltage readings downgraded part of the data, causing low data density and resolution. Coupling was partly improved by attaching salt-watered sponges to the electrodes and adding more conductive fine-grained materials to the electrodes. The detected high resistivity ice layer impeded deep penetration of electrical currents, which caused that the lower limit of the permanently frozen zone could not be defined.Despite these challenges, the captured ERT profiles are an indispensable contribution to the sparse field data on the internal structure of rock glaciers on the Tibetan plateau. Our results contribute to a better understanding of the prospective evolution of rock glaciers in dry, high mountain ranges under a changing climate.

The northern Nyainqêntanglha range on the southern Tibetan Plateau reaches an elevation of 7150 m and is mainly characterized by a periglacial landscape. A monsoonal climate, with a wet period during the summers and arid conditions during the rest of the year governs the landscape processes. Large parts of the mountain range are considered permafrost due to the high altitude and the associated low air temperature. Rock glaciers, which are bodies of ice-rich debris, are a typical landform. The recently published IPCC report on the cryospheres of high mountain areas highlights the sensitivity of rock glaciers to climate warming and emphasizes the importance of their study.We study the distribution of rock glaciers of the northern Nyainqêntanglha range and our aim is to produce an inventory of active rock glaciers based on their surface motion characteristics. The lack of higher order vegetation and the relatively low winter precipitation enable us to employ Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) time-series techniques to study both seasonal and multi-annual surface displacement patterns. InSAR is a powerful microwave remote sensing technique, which makes it possible to study displacement from a few millimeters to centimeters and decimeters per year. It is thus suitable to detect sliding and creeping processes related to periglacial landscapes and permafrost conditions on the Earth’s surface. We use both Sentinel-1 (2015-2019) and TerraSAR-X ScanSAR data (2017-2019) for our analysis.In this study we differentiate rock glaciers from the surrounding seasonally sliding slopes by their significantly higher surface creeping rates with mean velocities of 5–20 cm yr-1. We also observe that the velocity of rock glaciers is less dependent on the summer monsoon, which allows us to further differentiate between rock glaciers and other landforms. This method could potentially be used to create rock glacier inventories in other remote regions, as long as the snow cover in winter is thin enough to allow continuous InSAR time-series analysis. These rock glacier inventories are necessary to assess the effects of climate change on vulnerable high mountain regions.

The karst lakes of the sparsely-populated Lacandon Forest in Chiapas, southern Mexico, and their associated sediment infill are attracting increasing attention as high-resolution and continuous environmental and climate archives. To evaluate the information stored in the sediments, paleolimnologists retrieve sediment cores and analyze multiple biological and non-biological indicators. Our geophysical measurements presented here were motivated by the need to determine coring locations providing continuous sediments records from a total of four lakes of the Lacandon Forest. Therefore, we mapped the sediment thickness on the lake floor by applying seismic, electrical, and electromagnetic methods. The measurements were carried out with floating devices – and, after the sudden drainage of two of the studied lakes, complemented by measurements on the exposed lake floor.During a first campaign in March 2018 when lakes were filled, we collected seismic data with a sub-bottom profiler (SBP). Furthermore, we collected transient electromagnetic (TEM) data with a floating measuring device to investigate the potential of the method for the determination of sediment thicknesses as an alternative to seismic methods. After the lake-level maximum that coincided with the first campaign, the water levels of two of the studied lakes dropped dramatically by July 2019, leaving lake Metzabok (maximum depth ~15 m) dry and lake Tzibaná (~70 m) with a water level decreased by approx. 30 m. In October 2019, when lake levels were still low, we conducted a second survey covering the dry lake floor of lake Metzabok and some dry parts of lake Tzibaná. During this second campaign, we collected electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), induced polarization (IP), and seismic refraction tomography (SRT) data along selected lines of the 2018 survey.Our 2018 results from the water-borne survey show that sediment thickness estimates from seismic (SBP) and electrical (TEM) data agree well for water depths up to 20 m and sediment thicknesses ranging from 2 m to 10 m. The 2019 data collected on the dry lake floor confirms the findings of the first campaign and – due to the smaller distance between measuring devices and target – results in a more detailed picture of sediments and the underlying limestone bedrock.

Glacial lakes constitute a substantial part of the legacy of vanishing mountain glaciation and act as water storage, sediment traps and sources of both natural hazards and leisure activities. For these reasons, they receive growing attention by scientists and society. However, while the evolution of glacial lakes has been studied intensively over timescales tied to remote sensing-based approaches, the longer-term perspective has been omitted due a lack of suitable data sources. We mapped and analyzed the spatial distribution of glacial lakes in the Austrian Alps. We trace the development of number and area of glacial lakes in the Austrian Alps since the Little Ice Age (LIA) based on a unique combination of a lake inventory and an extensive record of glacier retreat. We find that bedrock-dammed lakes are the dominant lake type in the inventory. Bedrock- and moraine-dammed lakes populate the highest landscape domains located in cirques and hanging valleys. We observe lakes embedded in glacial deposits at lower locations on average below 2000 m a.s.l. In general, the distribution of glacial lakes over elevation reflects glacier erosional and depositional dynamics rather than the distribution of total area. The rate of formation of new glacial lakes (number, area) has continuously accelerated over time with present rates showing an eight-fold increase since LIA. At the same time the total glacier area decreased by two-thirds. This development coincides with a long-term trend of rising temperatures and a significant stepping up of this trend within the last 20 years in the Austrian Alps.

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is the largest alpine plateau on Earth and plays an important role in global climate dynamics. On the TP, climate change is happening particularly fast, with an increase in air temperature twice the global average. The particular sensitivity of this high mountainous environment allows the observation and tracking of abiotic and biotic feedback mechanisms. Closed lake systems, such as the Nam Co on the central TP represent important natural laboratories for tracking past and recent climatic oscillations, as well as geobiological processes and interactions within their respective catchments. This review gives an interdisciplinary overview of modern and paleoenvironmental changes, focusing on Nam Co as model system. In the catchment area, the steep rise in air temperature forced glaciers to melt, leading to a rise in lake levels and changes in water chemistry. Some studies base their conclusions on inconsistent glacier inventories but an ever-increasing deglaciation and thus higher water availability have persisted over the last decades. The enhanced water availability causes translocation of sediments, nutrients and dissolved organic matter to the lake, as well as higher carbon emissions to the atmosphere. The intensity of grazing has a significant effect on CO2 fluxes, with moderate grazing enhancing belowground allocation of carbon while adversely affecting the C-sink potential through reduction of above- and subsurface biomass at higher grazing intensities. Furthermore, increasing pressure from human activities and livestock grazing are enhancing grassland degradation processes, thus shaping biodiversity patterns in the lake and catchment. The environmental signal provided by taxon-specific analysis (e.g. diatoms and ostracods) in Nam Co have revealed profound climatic fluctuations between warmer/cooler and wetter/drier periods since the late Pleistocene and an increasing input of freshwater and nutrients from the catchment in recent years. Based on the reviewed literature, we outline perspectives to further understand the effects of global warming on geo- and biodiversity and their interplay in the Lake Nam Co, which acts as a case study for potentially TP-wide processes that are currently shaping the earth’s future.
